“We’ll create some value in these kids’ lives,” he said.

“We have a chance to have a special program, but it’s not (just) about wins and losses. We might win 10 or 12 games.

But we need to win these games the right way and build good character kids.”

Freeman -- who also works as an admissions recruiter at the college -- said that he’s already received praise from the places where his players practice, regarding the way they act while working out in public.

The 43-year-old Little Falls resident said that type of feedback makes him proud and gives overall hope to CSE baseball going forward.

By Jerry Del Priore hen the College of St. Elizabeth (CSE) in Morristown went co-educational in 2016, that opened the door to expand its Division-III athletics program.

School administrators decided that they wanted to add a baseball program and hired Arlan Freeman in September of 2018 to guide the team.

Since then, Freeman has been feverishly working to put together a competitive club and believes the Eagles will work hard every day to get better. He said that CSE baseball currently has 46 student-athletes, which will be split into junior varsity (16) and varsity (30) squads.

The varsity team will play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) for the 2019-20 season, facing league opponents such as Pennsylvania programs Wilson College, Bryn Athyn College, Keystone College, Rosemont College, Clarks Summit University, and Cairn University, as well as New Jersey’s Centenary University.

Freeman said that the JV squad will play nine games two at the end of March and seven on Sundays throughout the season, and members of the team can be mixed and matched with varsity when needed.

CSE Director of Athletics, Juliene Brazinski Simpson, is thrilled about the addition of the men’s baseball program.

“We are excited and look forward to the continued growth in our athletic department,” Simpson said on CSE’s website. “This is a great time to add a baseball team as we continue to grow as a college.”

A native of Maine, Freeman is hopeful that CSE’s baseball program will continually develop on a daily basis as he applies his 10-plus years of coaching and interpersonal teaching methodologies to his men.

“We have some pretty good athletes,” said Freeman, who was SUNY New Paltz’s interim head men’s baseball coach for the past two seasons and led the program to its first conference playoff win in 17 years while the association named him SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 2018.

“We’re going to be fundamentally sound,” he continued.

“I like to think we can get one percent better every day.

I’ve been able to get the best out of the groups I’ve worked with. It’s rewarding when you see things work out. I think we have a chance to build a sustainable (winning) culture.”

But Freeman noted that the Eagles’ record won’t be the only way to define his team’s success. He said that he’s looking to help further the development of his student-ath-

Chester Library Bids Adieu to Mary Murphy

By Dawn M Chiossi hester Library recently said goodbye to their long-time Adult Programs and Communications Specialist, Mary Murphy. They wished her well in her retirement after 14 years on the job.

Her last official day was February 1st.

Energetic, passionate, and community-minded; Murphy related that she began working part-time at Chester Library when her children were in middle school. “I’ve always loved libraries, but I never expected (until I’d been working here) that I’d be working in one,” she said.

Unexpected job or not, Murphy shone in it. Utilizing her background in market management as well as her BS in marketing and MBA, Chester Library took notice. Just a year later she was asked to begin developing and managing programs for adults.

“This was the start of a new effort by the library,” she explained. “Previous to that, only children’s programming was offered.”

With an attitude of confidence in herself, preparation for the job, and loving what she did, Murphy eagerly embraced the challenge of her new responsibilities. Ultimately, her

efforts brought to the library a large variety of outstanding events and seminars for everyone.

“A library is a place that holds a wealth of information to make us better people,” Murphy insisted. “We tried to focus on offering programs that enhanced the cultural, educational and social lives of Chester residents.”

Murphy’s tremendous endeavors led to patrons learning a lot about different subjects. Soon they offered everything from lectures to musical programs, technical support, movies, discussion groups, book clubs, yoga, wellness programs, how-to programs, digital services and more.

“Programs have been an essential part of libraries and I am happy to have been a part of that,” she prided.

With her strong desire to help the community, many of her energies were proudly focused on Senior Citizens-- enhancing the quality of their years and helping them stay young at heart. In particular, Murphy says she will miss the Senior Lunch and Learn Program, which she partnered with the Senior Resource Center.

The program covers many health and wellness topics for seniors, as well as so much more. “Socializing is

such an important part of aging well,” Murphy pointed out.

Additionally, Murphy believed in helping Seniors to keep current with ever-changing technology; this to keep them connected to others.

Sometimes it is the smallest moments that make the most impact for others, and Murphy has never forgotten this one: “About three or four years ago, I was helping a senior learn to text. His first text was to his grandson--someone who never called him. When he received a message back just a couple of seconds later, saying ‘Hi Grandpa, glad you learned how to text,’ this man was so proud,” Murphy enthused. “He was so thrilled that thanks to this technology, he could have that instant contact with his grandson.”

Much more than a location for books, Chester Library is a community and Murphy has always enjoyed playing an active role in it.

She states that she is leaving ‘to pursue other things,’ but is confident that the library will be in good hands with her replacement, Donnella Tilary.

more time with her family.

“I want to be able to make a difference in people’s lives through volunteering and by being a good family member and friend.”

No matter what her future holds, Murphy will still keep her passion for libraries, this time visiting Chester Library as a patron. “I will still be involved with running the book club at Chester Area Senior Housing and since I love to read, I hope to attend programs at the library.”

Whether it’s looking forward to another journey or looking back on her library career, for Murphy, it’s all about giving back. “I’ve always felt especially good about my job when I’ve been able to help others,” she shared. “I hope that I have made a difference in the lives of people in our community.”

n the seven presidential elections since 1992, the Republican presidential nominee has won the popular vote exactly once. The lone GOP candidate to receive a majority of the national vote was George W. Bush in 2004. Bush’s election-day victory over Democrat John Kerry, who had, in most observers’ views, “won” the debates between the two, was explained by the respected Democratic pollster Peter Hart: “Voters preferred I Like over IQ.” One test of deciding between presidential nominees is, “Who would you rather have a beer with?” which is another way of asking which White House challenger the voter personally likes more than the other. In short, our ballot for president is the most “personal” vote we Americans cast. Almost always, we pick the candidate with whom we are more comfortable and, more significantly, the candidate whose judgment and character we think we could depend upon in a personal crisis.

As evidence of the weight of the “I like” factor in presidential voting, let’s look at recent contests: In 2012, Barack Obama, the winner, was rated 52% personally favorable by voters, while Mitt Romney’s scores were 47% favorable and 50% unfavorable. In 2008, Americans had a rare positive choice. In the last Gallup poll before election day, John McCain was given a favorable rating by 57% of Americans and was barely eclipsed by Barack Obama’s 61% favorable score. In 2004, winner George W. Bush was 53% favorable among voters on election day, while John Kerry’s numbers were at 47%-51%. In 1992 and 1996, voters liked Democrat Bill Clinton more than they liked both then-President George H. W. Bush and Sen. Bob Dole. Of course, the outlier election was 2016, when both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump received historically low favorability scores. About

Mark Shields 1 in 5 voters rated both candidates unfavorably but, when forced to choose between the two, voted for Trump with 3-2 odds.

But what about the 2020 Outsider who’s on our living rooms TVs at every timeout of every game, at every commercial break between weather reports, news coverage and even during the Super Bowl? Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, an authentic billionaire, is spending at a rate unprecedented in American politics. And it is paying off.

In most recent national polls, Bloomberg -- on the strength of his wall-to-wall media campaign -- has risen to double digits and as high as third place in some surveys.

We know that Michael Bloomberg has supported and spent generously to back candidates and initiatives that reflect his own priorities of gun control and climate change. In the eyes of some Democrats, Bloomberg’s political history -- his quarter-million-dollar gift to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham; the more than $11 million the mayor donated in 2016 to Pennsylvania continued on page 6

Tyranny of the Tamiflunatics

eware of clickbait character assassins masquerading as “journalists.”

This is a lesson America should have learned after the mass media defamation of the Covington Catholic schoolboys last year. Just a few weeks ago, innocent teenager Nick Sandmann won a multimillion-dollar settlement against CNN for leaping to conclusions and attempting to ruin his life in pursuit of a political agenda driven by confirmation bias. The Washington Post and NBC News face similar lawsuits for potential damages totaling more than a half-billion dollars.

False allegations have consequences.

And yet, here we are again.

In Colorado last week, a young family was hurled into a national firestorm created by a single, powerful NBC News vigilante with an ideological ax to grind.

“Investigative reporter” Brandy Zadrozny lit the fuse on Feb. 6 with a Twitter post announcing that a 4-year-old had died of the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,000 Americans (including nearly 70 children) have died of the flu this season. So what made this Colorado toddler’s tragic death newsworthy?

The NBC News journalist condemned the boy’s mom for having reached out to a Facebook health-centered parents’ group whose members recommended that she not give her child Tamiflu medicine that a pediatrician had prescribed.

Some commenters on the group had advised home remedies, including essential oils and vitamin C. Zadrozny linked to her incendiary hit piece on the mom and the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” Facebook group, which was titled: “On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.”

The toxic inference is clear: “An-

Michelle Malkin ti-vaxxers” are guilty of spreading online “misinformation” that led the mom to withhold a purportedly life-saving modern medicine -- and Facebook is guilty for not stopping it.

Zadrozny is a self-anointed and self-appointed social media policewoman whose main focus is pressuring Facebook to shut down discussion groups she doesn’t like. She labels all vaccine skeptics as conspiracy theorists without refuting facts or responding to peer-reviewed journal citations and historical data. She uses her bully pulpit to harangue Facebook into censoring laypeople seeking alternatives to “mainstream” medicine.

Zadrozny quoted “experts” fretting about parents who discuss their objections to coercive mandates and missives of Big Pharma and Big Government. Her article sneered at “natural remedies.”

The magic words “anti-vaxx” triggered the Two Minutes Hate theater that sent “Tamiflu” trending on Twitter.

The nicer messages called for the boy’s grieving mom to be arrested and imprisoned. Many advocated that she continued on page 6

DENTAL DIGEST Dental Bridges, Dentures, & Implants: What’s the Difference?

Ira Goldberg, DDS, FAGD, DICOI ery often, people need to replace missing teeth or teeth that will be extracted shortly. Bridges, dentures, and implants are the most common ways to accomplish this, but what are the differences?

The most common area of confusion lies between dentures and bridges. Dentures are removable: you take them in-and-out of your mouth. Bridges are permanent: you do NOT take them in-and-out.

Dentures come in two versions: “Full” (also known as “Complete”), and “Partial.”

A “Full” denture replaces all of the teeth in your jaw (no teeth remain), and a “Partial” denture is made with one or more of your teeth remaining.

These dentures can be made from a number of different materials: acrylic (plastic), metal, a combination of acrylic and metal, or a newer type of plastic called “thermoplastic.” The advantages of the acrylic include cost and simplicity. They are the least expensive, and the easiest to fabricate and repair. The disadvantages include thickness and stability: they require increased material thickness in order to provide strength, and they will be the loosest, meaning they will have the greatest tendency to move around

in your mouth. The thickness can interfere with speech.

Metal dentures are thin, rigid, and fit tightly. The downsides include increased difficulty to repair (although not terribly difficult) and cost (they are the most expensive).

Thermoplastic materials have the advantage of being flexible, which many patients find to be more comfortable. However, repairs can be difficult to impossible, based upon the type of material utilized.

Clasps are “arms” that extend off of a denture that help to keep the denture in place.

The clasps can be metal, white to match teeth, or pink to match gums. No clasp is perfect, but they are a necessary component for denture stability, but the downside is potential esthetic complications if they show in your smile. If a clasp breaks off the denture, a repair is not always possible, and can render the denture fit unsatisfactory.

Unlike dentures that are removable, bridges are permanent. They are not removable. This is one reason why bridges are more popular than dentures. Other advantages include increased biting / chewing power, increased esthetics, and less fuss with them since they don’t have to be taken in and out. Downsides include the “shaving down” of teeth on either side of spaces to keep them in place (called “abutment”

teeth), and potential cavity development or need for root canals on these abutments over time.

Dental implants provide a host of options. Most people think of an implant as a post that is placed into the jawbone to hold a single tooth (crown). This is one use of an implant, but there are other functions. The implant is actually the post: you can use it to secure a denture or a bridge, also! With respect to dentures, the implant can help to eliminate or decrease the number of clasps, providing a more esthetic outcome and more stable set of teeth. Bridges benefit from implants because now you cannot develop cavities around the abutments and there is no need for root canals. Implant bridges also eliminate the need for drilling on other teeth.

User Hayden chimed in: “She clearly should be executed, as should the person who posted the nonsense on FB, as well as anyone who liked said nonsense, ALL EXECUTED!!”

Zadrozny’s inciting tweet now has nearly 40,000 retweets, 5,000 comments and 72,000 likes.

Lost in all of these crazed point-andsputter diatribes were some pertinent, pesky facts.

who tell him how much smarter, more successful and more qualified he is to be president than anyone else?

Through his sophisticated and expensive TV and internet campaigns, we are learning what Mike Bloomberg wants us to know about him. What voters have yet to find out -- and will not know until he’s in the arena, mixing it up with the other Democrats and on the debate stage -- is whether we will like Mike.

Nor did she independently verify whether the parents were “anti-vaxx” or what vaccines besides the controversial flu vaccine (whose effectiveness has been challenged worldwide by health officials) they had chosen to avoid. A local television station, however, did the reporting Zadrozny failed to do.

It turns out the entire family, except for 4-year-old Najee Jr., had been suffering from influenza B. A 10-month-old brother who had been running a high fever had been seen at my neighborhood Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs the afternoon before Najee Jr. fell ill. Montoya told Fox31 TV in Colorado Springs: “We called the doctors. We called the hospital. We gave them the medicine we were instructed to give.

We did everything.”

Those who have already prejudged the mom respond that she must be lying. What if she is telling the truth? And why hadn’t Zadrozny updated her story as of Feb. 11? I asked the online social media monitor that question publicly on Twitter, but she failed to respond by my deadline.

More to the point, it’s quackery to suggest that Tamiflu would have saved Najee Jr.’s life. The respected Cochrane researchers in Britain have concluded there is no

evidence the medicine reduces mortality or hospitalizations. In 2006, the FDA updated the Tamiflu label indicating that it could cause psychiatric problems. Japan banned Tamiflu for teenagers amid concerns about deleterious side effects.

Just days before Zadrozny crucified Najee Jr’s family, a Denver mom publicly warned that her 8-year-old daughter suffered hallucinations from Tamiflu. Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl in Leesburg, Va. with the flu died of cardiac arrest. She had been prescribed Tamiflu. Another 16-yearold in Ohio died of the flu last month after suffering a stroke. She, too, had been prescribed Tamiflu.

Their cases didn’t make NBC News headlines, because they don’t fit the dissent-squelching narrative. Tamiflunatics, vaccine bullies and their media gatekeepers spread misinformation that destroys lives.

They are the true public health threats.

Netflix Cheerleading Docuseries Features Morris County Cheerleader

By Megan Roche etflix’s new docuseries, Cheer, has spread like wildfire. The show debuted in January 2020 and chronicles the world of cheerleading at Navarro College in Corsicana, TX. The tiny Texas college has big heart and big game when it comes to the world of competitive cheerleading. One of those Bulldog cheerleaders is Brooke Morosca, from Morris County.

Morosca, who hails from Rockaway, is a 2018 graduate of Morris Knolls High School in Denville. The Rockaway native found her love for the sport of cheerleading when she was just four years old. She has cheered for two different all-star gyms for over 16 years. After looking at colleges and meeting with Navarro’s head coach, Monica Aldama, Morosca officially joined the freshman class.

“I was a really shy kid and my parents were hoping that cheer would help me branch out. I loved performing in front of people when I got on the mat. I grew up as a flyer and I’m continuing to co-ed stunt in college. When I first started to look at colleges, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go, but once I got into contact with Monica and I saw the program, I knew this was where I

wanted to be.” Morosca said.

Cheer follows the Navarro College cheerleaders as they prepare for their one and only competition of the year, NCA Nationals in Daytona, Fl. every April. The competition is the only one out there for collegiate cheerleaders and winning is everything to head coach Monica and her bulldog cheer team. The team spends an entire year preparing a 2 minute routine that gets performed and judged only once. The team has won the National Championship a total of 14 times and was named Grand National Champion five times.

“We got really close with the members of the film crew and they were really good about keeping their distance during practice for safety reasons. It ended up being an overall cool experience.” Morosca said.

Throughout the series, viewers get a behind the scenes look at the tumbling, the pyramid, injuries, and the real world of what it takes to be a competitive cheerleader. There are stories of anguish and triumph, overcoming the odds, and much more shown throughout. Since the series debuted, the stars of Navarro’s cheer team have been on talk shows and their social media follows have increased greatly. With the notoriety that they now have, one won-

“I would say we’re a little bit more nervous, just because our exposure has really tripled. We’ve always just known that we have a job to do at this competition, we just want to hit and win and that’s all we’re focusing on.” Morosca said.

The behind the scenes look gives viewers the inside access to the hours of practice, where skills are put to the test over and over again, no matter what. The emphasis that anything can happen is extremely present when injuries happen and even if an athlete isn’t on the mat officially, they can very quickly be called in to replace someone who is hurt or who isn’t giving their 100%. According to Morosca, practice is each afternoon from 12:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and some nights, there is a two-hour practice on top of that. She also has a heavy course load of classes.

“Everyone has been really amazed at the hours and the amount of work that we put in. Nobody has known the behind the scenes of what I do. My family and friends have all been really supportive and they all think it’s really cool to see how hard we work.” Morosca said.

While the docuseries has blown up, the

girls and guys who make up Navarro’s squad have been traveling, doing press interviews, even appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Through all of the attention, Morosca has remained humble and grateful.

“Cheerleading has taught me how not to give up and to always push myself to be the best, whether that is by being an athlete or being a student. I also remain humble and continued on page 7

As Navarro is a two year college, Morosca is currently looking at her options of transferring to a four year school after her two years at Navarro are up. The pre-veterinary science major hopes to keep cheerleading in her life by continuing coaching the sport, even after she graduates with her veterinarian degree. For now, Morosca and her teammates are fully focused and locked in on preparing for NCA’s next month.

“We have less fortunate, less privileged kids. These kids are coming here for an education and to play baseball. We understand

what our niche is as a small college. They would get lost in a bigger school, but they get individualized attention here. They get a little more guidance and a little more push.”

While the 2020 season had started on February 25th, the Eagles’ first home games (doubleheader) will be played on Thursday, March 12th, at 1:00 p.m., at Diamond Nation in Flemington versus Dean College.

The Albrook School Helps Somerset Food Bank

n Monday, January 20, spreading Love and Kindness was the theme of the The Albrook School’s January Spirit Day. The goal was to “See the Difference One Person Can Make”.

In the week prior to Spirit Day, the children’s discussions at circle time centered on acts of kindness. The children were asked to spread kindness towards each other and at home. At home, the

children did chores to earn money to buy food items for the Somerset County Food Bank Backpack program. These activities engaged the children and helped them to understand what it is like to walk in another person’s shoes.

Last year the elementary students were able to make 200 food kits for the Somerset Food Bank. This year they surpassed that goal and were able to make 300 food

Chester Teen Playing Piano with Passion and Proficiency Earns Big Honors

By Megan Roche Chester teen is taking her piano playing skills to new heights. Sixteen-year-old Jasmine Meyer, a junior at West Morris Mendham High School, is preparing to compete as a division winner in the Music Teacher’s National Association Northeastern Division Senior Duet piano competition.

Meyer began playing piano at the age of five when her dad, Bill, bought a piano game for their family computer.

After playing the video game and loving it, Pauline and Bill enrolled Jasmine in her first piano class a year or two later.

She began entering competitions at the age of 10.

According to a press release from Music Teacher’s National Association, Meyer has earned many accolades due to her piano playing skills. Her recent accolades include second place in solo piano and first place in duet in the New Jersey Music Teacher Association’s piano competition. She was also named Gold Winner of the National Young Artists Chamber Music and Ensemble Competition and performed in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She received the High Honors Award in the 2019 NJMTA Spring Recital Audition, and was one of the Exceptional Young Artists featured in 2019 Crescent Concert 18th Annual Showcase. She was a winner in the 2019 Cecilian Music Club Young Artist Competition with performance at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Meyer was also selected to have master classes with world renowned pianists John Perry and Douglas Humpherys. Other awards include first place in both the International Music & Arts Society’s 5th Annual Talented Young Musicians Olympia Competition and the Music-Fest

Rising Talents Festival. She was a Gold Prize winner in the Golden Key International Music Festival, placed third in the American Protégé Piano & Strings International Competition, and was one of three finalists in the Princeton Festival Piano Competition Junior Category.

The MTNA competition, which is slated for later this month in Chicago, Ill., will have Meyer and her partner, Gordon Li, going up against the best of the best throughout the nation. The two have spent many hours rehearsing their musical and non musical repertoire, including working with someone else, learning the ins and outs of nonverbal communication, and working together to put out the best and most polished performance possible.

“Every year, the MTNA holds these competitions and previously, I’d only entered in the solo category. Since I switched piano teachers about a year ago (now studying under the direction of Dr. Julia Lam), I’ve gotten a duet partner, and only now did we feel that we were used to each other enough that we could try entering this big competition.” Meyer said.

Her goal for the MTNA competition? Learning more about her abilities as a pianist, even if that comes at the cost of not winning the competition.

“It’s not really the competition that’s important to me, it’s more about perfecting our duet ensemble. That’s more important to me than winning. The prize isn’t worth much if you aren’t happy with how you perform. My goal is to satisfy myself and reach a level where I’m happy with myself and go one step higher.” Meyer said.

As Meyer finishes out her junior year of high school,

she’s begun to look at the future beyond the walls of West Morris Mendham. Her goal is to keep piano in her life, but still work toward an academically rigorous major.

“If possible, I’d like to do a double major with music as one of my majors so that way I can still keep it in my life and pursue it after college, but also have another major to fall back on just in case the music doesn’t work out.”

Meyer will represent Chester at the competition during the annual Music Teacher’s National Association’s annual conference. The conference will take place in Chicago.

Project Help’s Art Poster Contest Deadline Extended

hat? It’s March?? How can that be? Wasn’t it just Thanksgiving???

That’s the feedback Project Help has gotten from art teachers across the state. Many teachers and art students want to participate in the organization’s annual Art Poster Contest, but time got away from them over the holiday season.

We don’t want to leave anyone out, so the deadline for the contest has been pushed forward to March 20.

Here’s what you need to know...

In 2019 the veteran’s aid group successfully launched its mobile closet, a repurposed school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide.

Based on that milestone event Project Help has chosen its theme for the Third Annual Poster Contest. Art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help bus and how it will benefit veterans in need of assistance.

Last year hundreds of school children from throughout New Jersey submitted their handiwork. This year thousands are expected to participate.

All students - kindergarten through high

school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. Art teachers already have the contest details in hand so all that is needed are some innovative ideas and the sky is the limit imagination!

Individual teachers can also reach out to Project Help to sign up and young artists can participate independently if their schools aren’t entering the contest.

All artwork will need to be submitted by the new deadline March 20. Entries will be judged on design, originality and content.

Prizes will be awarded in four grade level groups.

The winners and their families will be invited to a dinner award ceremony.

Winning entries will be displayed on social media, the Project Help website and at events to support the mission of serving our veterans.

Morristown Medical Center MD Cited as One of World’s Top Researchers

By Steve Sears 2-year-old Philippe Géneréux, a physician and Co-Director of the Structural Heart Program at Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center, recently was named by the Web of Science Group as a Highly Cited Researcher.

The numbers are astounding, and well represent the doctor’s respect among his peers. Dr. Géneréux has been well recognized by colleagues as his publication credits rank in the top one percent of clinical medicine. His writings have been published more than 500 times in cardiology journals, and he has been cited and referred to nearly 11,000 times in other articles.

“For me,” says Dr. Géneréux, “it’s an honor to receive that (recognition) because obviously for the last 12 years I’ve been trying to make some research – relevant research and meaningful research.” His method of discovery, finding that relevance, is unique.

“Every time I have an idea, I also try to answer an unmet need or answer an important question where we don’t know the answer, try to improve care to the patient and try to discover something new. I always try to be relevant.” Also, according to Géneréux, the award means his research has, yes been cited many times, but also has been used to trigger debates with multiple other research projects. Others in the world are embracing

presented with the NJ Heart Ball Researcher of the Year Award in 2018.

Dr. Géneréux graduated in 2007 from the University of Montreal and attended and trained at New York’s Columbia University in 2008 and 2009 for his interventional cardiology and structural heart fellowship. He also taught at the latter institution as well. While there, he did research for the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in Montreal for 5 years, for whom he currently serves as Director of the Angiographic Core Laboratory.

his findings. “So, for me, it’s very exciting to receive this award and (even) to be nominated. It means the work that we do is relevant and very appreciated by the peer community, and to be recognized by your peers as doing the most important research in the field is quite an honor for me.”

Recognition is nothing new to Dr. Géneréux, who was awarded the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology Young Investigator Award at the 2012 Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium, and he also was

evolution. “I was very excited to move to a very high-volume center where we are #5 in the United States in volume in structural heart disease. I can work clinically at the top of my expertise with a great team, and to be clinically busy in a very great environment is something I find very exciting.”

Dr. Géneréux continues to study in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Research Foundation and other international institutions, and with a worthwhile goal. “To bring all this research into Morristown Medical Center is very nice,” he says, “because we have so much volume and we can contribute to the research effort to a high degree.”

West Morris Central Sustainability Engineers Receive STEM Award

By Colleen O’Brien ight West Morris Central High School Seniors are among those students putting their well-deserved $5,000 BASF STEM grant award to good use this semester.

Said Frances Zegar, Technology Educator, “They and other students in Architecture, Design & Engineering, will be building 3-D models of the redesign of the Culinary Arts Classrooms.”

BASF – the awarder - is a chemical company with sites around the world. In November of 2019, the company awarded $100,000 total, or $5,000 each, to 20 participating schools. Bob Nelson, a leading spokesperson for BASF in North America said in the company’s news release that enhancing “education in a fun and imaginative way is important to the future of our industry.”

Besides the WMCHS Food Science Redesign Project, other New Jersey schools’ STEM topics include: Tracking Human Impact on Local Environment, Drones for the Science and Engineering Classrooms, Pollinator Pockets, and Robotic Farming with the FarmBot. The company stated that they chose the West Morris Central High School Food Science Redesign Project because, as the Architecture students described, they “will redesign the current food science classroom

to increase productivity and storage space to enable bulk purchases to save money, heighten student accessibility and involvement, and include a video/live feed. They will build a greenhouse with a hydroponic component to incorporate farm fresh food into their meals.”

The future redesigned Culinary Arts Classrooms, will be technically state-of-the-art.

The students working on the project had input from Eliza Feltimo, Culinary Arts Teacher, who also wants a video/live stream of her culinary preparations.

In addition to the classrooms, a Farm-toTable Greenhouse also will be part of the redesign.

“As far as I know,” said Zegar, “the latter has never been offered in the West Morris High School District.”

The Farm-to-Table concept includes sustainable practices such as using renewable resources where possible, having diverse biological products and making use of water efficiently.

Americans have a long history with wanting Farm-to-Table availability. According to Jan Whitaker on her blog “Restaurant-ing Through History,” at Wordpress.com, 19th-century Americans wanted their food fresh from “farmers and hunters.” In fact,

one Detroit businessman put out an ad saying “Farmers, hunters and others with game of any kind will please call upon William Carson, Carson’s Dining Saloon.”

Today Culinary Arts is a bridge, say educators, between STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math).

Educators also point out that the simple act of popping corn is a lesson in thermal energy. And how that corn is made to pop, whether by conventional heat transfer or by solar, steam, or light sources, is another scientific inquiry.

Outside the Culinary Arts Classrooms, the Farm-to-Table Greenhouse will encourage

healthy eating, yes. But it could also model to the surrounding West Morris community creative dishes that the students come up with themselves.

Adds Zegar, “With extensions and an additional room, as well as an additional teacher, WMC could double enrollment in the introductory level Culinary Arts class from 80 to 160. As well as doubling advanced enrollment from 20 to 40 in the first semester.”

She concludes, “Over the course of the year, total enrollment could double from 200 students to 400 students.”

“Enrollment numbers show that students are eager to take these classes. And that we would be able to meet enrollment levels.”

o many people are facing the dilemma of designing for a smaller space. Millennials aren’t interested in large homes in the suburbs and Baby Boomers are downsizing. Here some tips and tricks I recommend to my clients Small Space Furniture: Beds, Desks and More There are several companies that offer smaller scale furniture specifically for city dwellers. Although still comfy, their depth and width are scaled so that they’ll work in the smallest of rooms (and fit in the freight elevator).

For sleeping accommodations in a studio or small apartment, consider a Murphy bed or sleeper sofa (basically, a bed that disappears when you’re awake). A loft bed gives you the option of having seating or a desk beneath, much like in a college dorm. Platform beds are another option for smaller-scale bedrooms. One of my clients was downsizing to a beautiful townhome off the Green in Morristown. Great location – you can walk to everything.. but the rooms were considerably smaller than their previous home. You don’t have to sacrifice style for the sake of size.

Check out this gorgeous platform bed we used in their Master bedroom. The nightstands are built-in and the drawers are beneath the bed.

Less Is More with Multitasking Furniture Get furniture that multitasks. If you don’t need to chill your wine in your living room, you can always opt for a storage ottoman. Not only can you store linens and toys, they are perfect for extra seating. Using Decor to Make a Space Seem Larger with Visual Tricks Once you’ve got the furniture and lighting selected, other decorative elements can help visually enlarge the space.

Consider raising the eye up by hanging drapery or Roman shades just below the ceiling or crown molding. You could even hang a shelf around the perimeter of the room, just above the door molding. Decorate it with baskets (filled with things you don’t use frequently) and books.

Baked Eggs Puttanesca Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Servings: 4-6 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 3 anchovy filets, chopped 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 can (35 ounces) chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons Lindsay Capers, drained

1/3 cup Lindsay Pitted Kalamata Olives, drained and halved salt, pepper, to taste 1 1/2 cups chopped kale 6 eggs Heat oven to 400 F. In non-reactive saucepan over medium-high heat, warm olive oil. Add onion and saute, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 6 minutes.

Add garlic, anchovies and red pepper flakes; cook 1 minute. Stir in tomato paste then add chopped tomatoes with juices, capers and olives.

Bring to boil then reduce heat to low.

Simmer, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Transfer puttanesca sauce to 9-by-13-by2-inch baking dish and spread to cover bottom. Stir in kale then, using wooden spoon, make six wells. Crack one egg into each well and season yolks with salt and pepper, to taste.

Transfer to oven and cook until white is set and yellow is cooked to preference, 12-16 minutes. Spoon into bowls and serve.

Four (Tempting) Behaviors to Avoid When Saving for Retirement and the Secret to Real Retirement Savings Success

Provided by David M Rose o err is human, but you can sidestep some of the most common mistakes people make in saving for retirement by avoiding these four oh-so-tempting behaviors.

Retirement savings mistake #1: procrastinating Even though you know you will get older and eventually retire, a little part of you still believes you might not. Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler, the founding father of behavioral economics, has spent much of his career exploring why so many Americans have difficulty saving for retirement. One thing he found is that people would rather enjoy what their money can do for them today rather than in the future. 1 Retirement savings mistake #2: being too loss averse We don’t like to lose money, so the notion of less money in our paycheck today to serve our needs in the future is a tough pill to swallow. The problem with loss aversion is that we keep delaying that uncomfortable feeling of a smaller paycheck. If you delay too much, you lose out on the compounding effect. For example, if you decide to save $5,000 a year beginning at the age of 35, by the time you’re 65—assuming a 4.5% rate of return—you’ll have 43% less savings than if you had started saving at age 25. That adds up to $240,000.1 Retirement savings mistake #3: not practicing discipline When deciding how to invest, too often investors try to time the market rather than follow a disciplined investment approach.

Trying to get in the market “at the right time” sounds smart, but in reality, it often leads to inaction, because that right moment never seems to come. The idea of timing the market only reinforces the first two mistakes (procrastination and being too loss averse).

Here’s an example of a disciplined savings

strategy: You could start by putting $5,000 away, and then add 5% each year. It might sound boring, but in the end, it will add up to much more than a “timed” strategy that never quite launches.

Retirement savings mistake #4: tinkering with your portfolio too much You want to take a more active role in your investments? That’s good, except if you have a tendency to overmanage. This often happens with retirees, who find themselves with more free time than ever before, and take a keen interest in chasing performance.

In the research paper, “Trading is hazardous to your wealth,” authors Brad Barber and Terrance Odean found that, on average, households turned over 75% of their equity portfolios annually and underperformed by 1.5% each year.2 The biggest cause of this is mistiming when to buy and sell a particular fund. People are often driven by the desire to own more of that “hot” stock in rising markets when others are buying, or by “fear” in falling markets when others are selling. In a diversified portfolio, you’ll always be tempted to adjust the portfolio exposure in favor of the best-performing asset classes. The problem is, acting on that temptation may be costing you.

So what’s the trick to saving for retirement? Actually, there is none. Start saving for retirement today, and stick with it. No gimmicks, no magic timing and no schemes that will “pay off big.” Just old-fashioned discipline.

Well House Ministries: New Space and Faith Come Together

By Evan Wechman here is a new and growing church moving this month from East Hanover to the Hyatt Regency on Speedwell Avenue in Morristown. Formerly called the “Living Praise Church,” pastor Jeremy Alleman will be changing the name of the congregation to “The Well House Ministries.”

They will be having services both Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, as well as a bible study class after the Wednesday service.

Alleman, who grew up in nearby Florham Park and attended Hanover Park High School was not always a man of faith. However, now at the age of 26, after his father, Ted, passed earlier in the year, he is leading the congregation of about fifty people.

Jeremy loves the new location and believes that the church’s “main reason to move to Morristown is that we feel led to come here we would love to stay in Morristown if

that’s where God wants us to be. I grew up in Morris County and really love the area. This is home for me.”

Though he lived his whole life in a home of faith where his father was the head of the congregation for over forty years, it was not that fact alone which brought him to Christianity.

Alleman say’s though his parents influenced him towards a life of faith, they “let him make his own decisions.”

This led to a somewhat unorthodox route to Christianity as he admits he sinned just like others. “For a while, I fell back from the lord,” he claims. He humbly confesses he looked for love and salvation in all the wrong places. However, just about three years ago, he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart. The young pastor states he heard a “constant voice and felt a presence of God that was unlike anything that can be contained in words.”

This led him to study under his father and the other elders of the church for approximately three years until he was ordained this past July. As for his dad’s teachings, Alleman proudly believes “the most important thing I learned from my father is faith in God. He showed me the value of it and how it changed and blessed his life.”

“Jesus is salvation,” according to the leader of this promising church. It is because of his own salvation that he now wants to share more about Christianity with others. He sincer ly wants people to know that despite their own past transgressions, both his church and Jesus loves them. Alleman and his congregants are seeking to make a significant impact in Morristown. They want to spread the love of God and let people know there is a plan for them through Jesus. Alleman

concludes “all have sinned and I sinned but God loves them and is not mad.”

Alleman also wants people to know Christianity can be very personal for people and can change their lives now, as well as in the future. He indeed believes that it is more than a religion. He firmly maintains “religion lives off an experience from someone else. What makes Christianity different from any other religion is that it introduces you to a person (Jesus) that you can experience now, and do not have to wait.”

Navigating Hope Completes 100th Stop Brings Mobile Social Services Across Morris County

orris County’s Navigating Hope mobile social services team recently completed their 100th stop as part of unique program launched by the Board of Freeholders in 2019, and which has crisscrossed Morris County on wheels for the past eight months to help residents in need of assistance.

Many times working in tandem with Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon’s Hope One mobile addictions services, Navigating Hope seeks out clients who cannot get to county social services offices in Morris Township and Dover due to transportation, family or physical issues, among others.

The mobile program visit supermarkets, libraries, churches, train stations, soup kitchens, shopping malls, and many other locations to reach county residents in need of assistance.

The Board of Freeholders were briefed on the team’s first year on the road, which began with a June 6, 2019 stop at the Dover Free Produce Market at the Salvation Army and made its 100th stop outside of landlord-tenant court which is held in the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown.

“I am so proud of this team. Having been out in the field a number of time with them, watching them interact with our residents, it is heartwarming to see

what they are doing,’’ said Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo.

“There are people who just can’t get out in our county and don’t have the wherewithal to navigate the social services process on their own.’’

“Morris County is the accessible county,’’ added Freeholder Director Deborah Smith. “If you can’t get to us, we’ll get to you. I think that’s the whole point behind Navigating Hope.’’

Navigating Hope team members, including coordinator Christopher Linne, Rewaida Muheisen of the county Office of Temporary Assistance, and Ashley Reed of Family Promise of Morris County, made a presentation to the freeholders at their county government work session in Morristown.

Linne explained that the mobile operation has visited 31 of the county’s 39 municipalities, with Victory Gardens to be number 32 in March. Due to need, they have visited some locations multiple times, especially when they have found a community in need.

They have partnered with numerous organizations in the county, including the countywide library network, Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Homeless Solutions, senior housing complexes, soup kitchens, and religious institutions, among others, to expand the reach of Navigating Hope.

In 2019, the Navigating Hope team completed nearly 300 applications or client evaluations for service and made more than 150 referrals to other social services organizations, in addition to providing information to hundreds more county residents.

To reach more residents in need in 2020, Navigating Hope has expanded to a four-day-week operation, including a permanent weekly stop at the landlord-tenant court, where they have found a real need for their mobile services.

I Remember Dad: God and Country

By Richard Mabey Jr. ome of the most endearing memories of my Dad are of the times when he served as a Sexton at the Boonton United Methodist Church. Dad loved his church. He dedicated over a decade of his life to cleaning and maintaining his beloved church.

Dad began serving as the Church Sexton in the Summer of 1981. At the time, Dad was still working as a long distance truck driver. Generally speaking, on Wednesday evenings after supper, Dad would climb into his little Ford Ranger pickup truck and drive off to the church to clean it. I often went with Dad. I really don’t know how my father did it all. When he started working as a Sexton he was 53 years old. I would often see the fatigue in Dad’s eyes as he drove down Route 202, on his way to the church.

Dad would put in two to three hours of cleaning time on Wednesday nights. Then on Saturday mornings, he would get up early and eat breakfast. I often got up early on Saturday mornings, to help him clean the church. Right after breakfast we would make sandwiches. Then, throw in a couple of apples with a few oatmeal cookies in little brown bags. We would make tea and

coffee at the church, for our lunch break.

When we got to the church, Dad and I would start vacuuming and scrubbing. I was always amazed at how hard my Dad worked. Dad was an incredibly hard working man. He truly loved his church. Dad did get paid for being the Church Sexton. I don’t think he reported to the Minister, even half of the hours he worked. It was Dad’s way of giving of himself to the Lord.

Dad retired as a long distance truck driver in June of 1989. To my amazement, Dad then devoted even more time to the cleaning and the upkeep of his church. Thus, donating a lot more hours of labor to the church.

Dad served as Sexton of the Boonton United Methodist Church till the Summer of 1992. His bout with prostate cancer, made it nearly impossible for him to carry on his duties as Church Sexton.

In the Spring of 1987, Reverend Leon Weaver presented Dad with the well earned God and Country Award. This is an award given by both the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. Dad served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. Dad truly earned this prestigious award.

near and dear to my heart. I truly cherish them. Dad loved the Lord, he loved his family and he loved people. He had an uncanny belief in young people. Dad

‘Watershed U’ Offered to High School Students June 22-26

igh school students considering majoring in environmental science, conservation or environmental education in college are invited to “Watershed University,” a new program offered this summer by Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), the region’s watershed watchdog.

The one-week certificate program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, 2121 Larger Cross Road, Bedminster.

The program is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who want to gain insights in the environmental field, learn how to make impactful change and serve their communities. Each day includes a speaker, hands-on scientific exploration, and team building.

“Participants will learn from experts, examining environmental and social topics that affect local and global natural resource challenges,” said Lauren Theis, education director for Raritan Headwaters. “On-theground conservation projects will allow students to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and building connections

within a group.”

Watershed University topics include: Watershed conservation Creating habitat for native wildlife Native plant identification Pond and stream study Climate issues Environmental justice GIS mapping Environmental policies Students will have the option to participate in additional experiences, such as organic gardening, visual art projects, kayaking, hiking and yoga. Students will also connect with RHA staff and partners to explore opportunities for advanced learning, community service, citizen science projects and internships.

oney management and building long-term financial health is a careful balancing act between long- and short-term financial needs, and now is a perfect opportunity to re-examine your goals. Last year, the firm launched its Emergency Savings Initiative, a program designed to help people living on low incomes gain access to, and increase usage of, savings strategies and tools to help establish important safety nets.

As with any financial matter, there’s no one “right” way to save. Individual circumstances require a customized approach to determine the best method to fit needs. In addition to traditional saving methods, Common Cents Lab, Commonwealth and the Financial Health Network are working

with financial institutions and other enterprises on an initiative to create new and experimental programs that address the challenges many consumers face when it comes to saving money.

5 Tips for Traveling by Air with Children

pring, for some families, means packing bags and heading to the airport for a getaway. However, flying with young children can be stressful.

“New experiences can be exciting for some children, but they can also be frightening, especially if it’s your child’s first time flying,” said Linda Nelson, a program developer on KinderCare’s education team. “Talking about what will happen can help your family manage expectations and focus on the fun of travel.”

Consider these ideas to help make family airplane travel an enjoyable adventure for everyone.

Schedule Flights Smartly If you have the ability, pick a flight that works with your child’s current eating and sleeping schedules. Aim for a flight that occurs between mealtimes, and try to fly during normal naptime.

Be Ready for Jet Lag If you’re going to cross time zones, plan ahead to combat jet lag. Two weeks before traveling, start making small adjustments to your family’s schedule by moving bedtime 20 minutes toward the time zone you’ll be traveling. Wait a few days then adjust your schedule again. When you get to your destination, try to stick to your child’s regular schedule by taking naps and going to bed as close to his or her normal times as possible.

Pack the Essentials At the airport, you’ll want to move nimbly and handsfree, so opt for a backpack as your carry-on. Pack a change of clothes for each member of the family, diaper wipes, tissues, lotion and lip balm. If your child uses a pacifier, attach

it to your child’s clothing using a clip. It can help soothe the pressure in his or her ears during takeoff and landing. Also consider packing books, crayons, markers, pencils, paper, activity books and age-appropriate toys to keep your child occupied.

Remember the Snacks Low blood sugar can turn even the sweetest kids into champion tantrum throwers, so be sure to bring along plenty of healthy snacks in case delays disrupt regular mealtimes. Consider options like homemade granola or protein bars, fresh fruits and veggies, sandwiches or almond-butter pouches. If your flight is long, try to pack snacks that won’t create lots of crumbs you’ll have to live with until you arrive at your destination. Also remember a spill-proof cup or water bottle you can fill before boarding.

Mind the Rules Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are there to help passengers, but there are also rules that must be followed. Consider these airport regulations before traveling: Medically necessary liquids like baby formula, baby food, juice and breast milk are not subject to the 3.4-ounce limit.

Children under the age of 12 are not required to remove their shoes during screening.

If you’re flying within the United States, children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult usually don’t need more identification than a boarding pass. However, some airlines may ask for a birth certificate for lap infants. Call ahead of time to see which documents you need.
