Over the years, technology has changed the scope of firefighting in many ways. “We used to have manual trucks, and used to have stand on a step in the back,” said Rogers, “That’s evolved so that we sit inside the truck where there’s heat and air conditioning; and AC is not just a special feature, it really helps keep us cool and healthy.” Echavarria, who has been Rogers department colleague for more than 25 years, says he “fell in love with Millburn” when he was eight years old. “I’m very passionate about public safety in the community and look forward to continuing the rich traditions of the fire service and to be an exemplary leader to the firefighters I represent,” said Echavarria. Retiring Millburn Fire Chief Will Continue Helping Victims

By Nicole Greco ichael Rogers joined the Millburn Fire Department as a volunteer, fresh out of high school, as America celebrated its bicentennial. Seven presidents later, the hometown boy is preparing to retire as Fire Chief on April 1. He says it’s a “bittersweet” time, but that he knows he’s leaving the department in good hands as Batallion Chief Robert Echavarria will take over as chief. After a few years as a volunteer, Rogers joined as a staff firefighter in 1981 and within just a few months, he and his colleagues had the challenge of battling a very difficult mansion fire. It was one of many challenging events for his department, including a blaze on Main Street, that have helped shape his career.

Volunteers Needed

ew Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center, which supplies blood products and services to 60 hospitals throughout the state, is in need of volunteers at blood drives. The blood service volunteer is

an integral member of the collection team assisting donors with registration, escorting and canteen duties and watching for post donation reactions. Volunteers should have the ability to relate to the public, be able to perform different

jobs as needed and have the willingness to follow the rules. For additional information contact, Manager of Community Relations, R. Jan Zepka at 732-616-8741 or zepka@nybloodcenter. org.

Retiring Fire Chief... continued from front page Rogers says he’ll still be nearby the department, “but I won’t get in the way.” He served as president of the NJ Career Fire Chief’s Association and Essex County Fire Chief’s Association and received several awards for his service and dedication to saving lives. Right now, Rogers is waiting for summer camp with all the exuberance of a fun-loving child. He is

a counselor at The Arthur Luf Childrens Burn Camp in Connecticut. The program, founded and organized by firefighters, provides children who have suffered serious burns to attend a week filled with fun, socialization, and a chance to “feel like kids with other children who have burns.” Rogers said, “They have all the fun you’d expect at summer camp, and they never complain, they nev-

er complain about what they’ve been through or the pain or how many surgeries they’ve had to have. Some of the campers say this is the only time they get to feel like kids.” It’s the continuum of care in a career marked by many accolades. Rogers is looking forward to this new chapter and Echavarria is eager to begin his tenure as chief.

Support Pediatric Epilepsy Program By Running Or Walking In Strides For Hope

T

appearances. Faith and Marc Greenstein began the Greenstein Hope Fund in 2008 when their six month-old son was diagnosed with the rare Sturge-Weber Syndrome, with epilepsy being one of the main side effects. After numerous hospitalizations, multiple brain surgeries and many therapies and medications to help him live a normal life, the Greensteins were very grateful for the expertise and compassionate care he received at Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s Pediatric Epilepsy Center. The Annual Strides for H.O.P.E. 5K Run & 2K Walk is one of the major fundraising events the Foundation holds. The Greenstein family invites everyone in both the epilepsy community and the local community to join them at the Strides for H.O.P.E.

By Jennifer Walkup he 5th Annual Strides for H.O.P.E. Race to benefit the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is set to take place on Sun., April 23, at Livingston High School. The 5K run/2K walk, to be held rain or shine, aims to raise awareness and support for children with epilepsy cared for at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Every dollar raised will fund and support educational programs as well as equipment and provisions for the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at St. Barnabas. This family-fun event, run by the Greenstein Hope Fund, will include many entertaining activities for children and adults of all ages. There will be a DJ, refreshments, balloon artists, face painters and character

event. Run, walk, or simply show support by attending the festivities or making a donation. Various level sponsorships are also available. By being a part of the Strides for H.O.P.E. event, participants will help transform hospital care for the thousands of children living with epilepsy that receive care at the Saint Barnabas Pediatric Epilepsy Center. “Our goals for this year is to continue to grow the event as we have each year since its inception in 2013,” said Faith Greenstein. “Last year we had 700 participants and raised $100,000. For 2017, we’d like to grow both of those numbers, as well as the number of sponsors, allowing us to raise more money for the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at St. Barnabas, and also to raise awareness for the epilepsy community overall.”

“There are two sides to this event,” she continued. “The epilepsy community coming together and celebrating their families, and the race itself bringing runners, walkers and athletes to the course. Bringing these groups together on race day for a fun and inspiring event, always results in a very successful day.” The 5K race is on a USATF certified course offering quick and flat sections and a few inclines. There are timers at miles one and two and a clock at the finish. There will also be a 2K family fun walk and kids’ sprints for children ages 12 and under. Race awards for runners include top three overall male/female, and top three in various age groups male/female, 12 and under, 13 and 14, 15-19, 20-80. Registration and family events will begin at 8:30

IMPLANT DENTISTRY For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier. Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

MHS Junior Wins Music Contest And Visit To Grammy’s Backstage

By Stefanie Sears he GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Teens Make Music Contest asked musicians aged 14-18 to produce an original song and/ or music video about substance abuse. Short Hills resident Renee Levine, a Millburn High School junior, did just that and won second place for her song “Paralyzed,” which describes a person’s struggle with substance abuse and how the narrator hopes that she could help the individual overcome. “My song, ‘Paralyzed,’ was already written before I encountered the contest,” explains Levine. “As an aspiring songwriter I strive to address social issues and areas of importance in my own original way.

In my life, I see substance abuse running rampant in my community and high school, and I believe it is extremely important to address this issue. I feel that lots of teens think that in order to have fun, they need to be under the influence, and this is totally false.” Levine participates in the Peer Leadership program at her school. As a member, she and other students do community service while promoting drug and substance free lifestyles. “With substance prevention being such a big part of my life I created a song about a woman who is stuck in her addiction to drugs and alcohol while, unfortunately, being unaware of the harm she is causing herself. As she be-

lieves she is living in paradise while under the influence, she is unaware that she is paralyzing herself in the process.” Two of Levine’s favorite lines in the song are “Searching for solace at the bottom of a bottle, using but losing to a false gospel” and “Her disguise, in the skies, feels like paradise, but she’s paralyzed.” These lyrics and the rest were featured on the MusiCares, GRAMMY Foundation,Vans Warped Tour websites and on drugfree. org. “I am always looking and searching for new contests to enter to get my voice heard,” she says. “When I came across this GRAMMY competition/ MusiCares Make Music Contest, I immediately sub-

mitted my song. I really identified with the purpose of this contest.” As a second place winner, Levine was awarded $250 provided by Visions Adolescent Treatment Center and the opportunity to attend the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards backstage experience during rehearsals on Feb. 12. Other prizes include two tickets to the GRAMMY Museum, two tickets to any Vans Warped Tour show, gift bags, and more. “Adele is probably one of the most influential artists in my life,” she says. “However, I sadly did not meet her. When I got to LA, I was taken backstage and introduced to the ins and outs of the music business as we saw all the areas of production and live

rehearsals of major artists such as John Legend, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Pentatonix, Daft Punk, and The Weekend. It was truly remarkable to see the performers in their natural state as they practiced.” Levine herself has been songwriting and practicing music since she was five

years old. Her parents introduced her and her equally music loving older sister Nicole to the art at a very young age. “Coming from a Latin American background, I’ve grown up exposed to an Argentine culture and an American culture, and continued on page 7

What I have always strived for in creating my music was to create a bridge of different cultures and different social issues to unite all people.” Though she still aspires to pursue her musical dreams, considering the difficulty of the competitive industry, Levine plans on focusing on a possible biochemistry or teaching career. “Regardless of what I do in life, I just want to make my mark on the world,” she says. “It’s a big world we

I truly believe that my music addresses the elephants in the room in society. Often I find that people are hearing music, but not really listening, and I hope that with my lyrics, people will start to see the true purpose for music - to create a message.” Although Levine has not performed “Paralyzed” for a live audience yet, listeners can find her original music on Soundcloud at: soundcloud.com/reneeaudrey and her YouTube channel: Renee Audrey Originals.

MHS Lax Impacts Brain Tumor Research Through Fundraiser Goal

By Cheryl Conway laying lacrosse is just part of the game freshmen at Millburn High School have been sporting. Besides perfecting their skills on the field, players are improving some of their life learning skills by engaging in ways to make an impact and give back to others. The 2017 MHS Freshmen Boys’ Lacrosse Team has been raising funds to fight against pediatric brain tumors. Through its Make and Impact Fundraiser, the team has already raised $3,622 out of its $5,000 team goal. “I truly believe we can make it,” says Mark Friedrich, lacrosse coach and health/physical education

G

teacher at MHS. All proceeds are going to Project Impact and the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS). The 18 boys in the team began raising funds at the start of their season on March 3 and will continue with different efforts throughout the season which ends May 13, says Friedrich. On March 11, all 18 boys ran on a “cold Saturday morning” in the Morristown St. Patrick’s Day 5KTeam Run in Morris Twp., he says. The boys collected donations and raised money through an online website. “We will be doing other smaller activities in conjunction with this fundraiser throughout the season,”

adds Friedrich. In April, the team will be selling brain tumor aware-

ness bracelets for about $3 each. The team will also be canning outside two local supermarkets on some Saturdays in May. A MHS lacrosse coach since 2004, Friedrich has been encouraging his team to participate in a fundraiser for the past four years. In previous years, his team has raised money for the Susan G. Komen Race For a Cure, raising $4,000 to $6,000 annually. This year he decided to make an impact with a different organization. “I saw online a video regarding Project Impact,” says Friedrich, in which young victims of brain tumors recount personal loss. “Each year I try to pick a fundraiser to give back,” says Friedrich. As a father of three young children, Friedrich was favorable toward Project Impact since it deals with pediatric brain tumors. “I try to find something

outside the experience of lacrosse,” explains Friedrich, “so boys can experience a life lesson, so it’s not just about lacrosse.” One lesson the boys are learning is that when one person gives back, rewards can follow. An owner who manufactures safer lacrosse balls read about the MHS Make An Impact campaign and decided to thank the team for their contribution toward pediatric brain cancer. Erin Hanson, founder and owner of Guardian Innovations who makes the official ball of U.S. Lacrosse, reached out to Friedrich through email and awarded the team by donating a bucket of 100 “safe” balls. Known as The Pearl, Hanson and her husband invented a safer lacrosse ball “to make sure that players like our son, a goalie at Georgia Tech, isn’t hit with a rubber ball that has

hardened and grease up,” she writes. “I was so moved that your guys are raising money to help others!” writes Hanson. “Our family was personally affected by brain cancer when our daughter was diagnosed with an astrocytoma in 2012 at the age of 22 We are so thankful that people like you are willing to fundraise for patients like her!” Those “balls are very expensive,” says Friedrich, impressed by the donation. More importantly, “the boys are seeing their efforts by getting awarded.” To donate, go to the NBTS Donation website for the team’s “Make an Impact” fundraiser at https:// nbtsevents.braintumor.org/ campaign/millburn-highschool-freshmen-boys-lacrosse-make-and-impactfundraising-campaign/ c119858. The donation page website will be open until May 13.

April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate

S

by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-

teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and

providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking
