Producer To Share Music Program At Millburn Library
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta teve Sandberg, best known as the musical director, songwriter, and composer for “Dora the Explorer” and “Go, Diego, Go!” plans to come to the Millburn Library Auditorium on Sat., Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. with his exciting classical and world music program, “Alaya.” The program coincides with Sandberg’s October release “Alaya,” on Teknofoic Recordings, fusing authentic world music with contemporary electronica. The program “Alaya” will begin with a solo piano recital of Bach, Haydn, Ravel, and Chopin, continuing with the quartet drawing from classical, African, Latin, Balkan, and Indian traditions. This performance will be the second time that “Alaya” is implemented before a live audience. “It’s adult music, but it’s very accessible,” said Sandberg. “I don’t just do far-out inaccessible stuff. Everything I do is very melodic. I try to keep it very open and very ‘hooky’ for people. That’s why I was good writing for ‘Dora.’ I like melodies and things everybody can relate to.” Sandberg began taking an interest in music at the age of four. His parents brought a piano for his younger sister, but she didn’t take to it. “I loved classical music,” he said. “Beethoven was my favorite.” During Sandberg’s time at Yale, he was into composition and said he really got into electronic music. It was 1973 when he moved back to NYC and the salsa scene was really happening. He started playing in Latin bands. He said, “My parents were dancing to Tito Puente at the Palladium when I was in the womb.” Sandberg was able to work as a musician in NYC for many years. “I kept doing what I loved,” he said. “which was many things; involved in all kinds of world music. I was lucky because people would call me and I got involved in cool projects. I kept doing it and one thing led to another.” So it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time when Sandberg got the “Dora the Explorer” gig, a landmark in children’s television worldwide. He is now working on “Dora and Friends,” a sequel to the original series. Sandberg has toured with David Byrne and Bebel Gilberto as keyboardist, arranger and vocalist. He’s con-
ducted and arranged music for Broadway, and composed and directed for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Currently he is producing and writing music for Literary Safari’s developmental reading apps for children, and for “Magic on My Fingertips,” an innovative series of animated videos which teach young children how to soothe and uplift their emotions through music and movement. When it comes to inspiration, Sandberg is into everything. He said, “I love Brazilian music very much, Milton Nascimento, Traditional world music from Africa. I love Stevie Wonder. I love R&B. I love jazz. All that stuff. I go on You Tube and listen to a lot of master classes from musicians.” When Sandberg isn’t playing music he loves to ride his bicycle. “I’m so lucky,” he said. “I live on the upper west side. New York has so many great bike paths.” He also enjoys different kinds of yoga, seeing movies, and hanging out with his friends. For more information, visit: http://stevesandberg music.com/.

Millburn Reflects And Moves Forward Into New School Year
By J. L. Shively eptember is here again bringing with it a crisp, new school year full of innovative ideas and exciting memories to reflect upon in the Millburn School District. In a nutshell the reflection with the most impact is the upcoming vote for the Millburn Referendum, states Millburn Superintendent Christine Burton. According to the Millburn Referendum website the BOE will be holding the vote for this Referendum on Tues., Sept. 27. This vote will ask Millburn District residents to authorize the District to raise funds to finance a number of school improvements. Burton summarizes these improvements to include the reacquisition of the Washington School, formerly the Millburn Regional Day School, to be used as a fifth grade school and the renovation of media centers at the elementary, middle and high schools. Many health and safety improvements for the school will correspond with this referendum as well, Burton notes. Another highlight from the previous year Burton mentions is the consistent relations with parent and student groups which was the result of student planning. These groups
were “an initiative to alleviate student stress,” says Burton. Using data from the high school to see what are the most prominent catalysts for stress, educators, parents and students alike are given an open window of communication to institute a method for lessening that stress, explains Burton. In the past school year there were many opportunities for Millburn District students to attend workshops and listen to speakers who visited the schools. The focus of these workshops were to assist students in finding ways to identify stress and create a forum to which students can rely on to help alleviate and understand difficult situations surrounding them. “A number of topics we touched upon are near and dear to our heats; we have to educate the community on them and make them aware of things that are going on in their child’s lives,” says Burton. Creating a consistent educational forum for students about stress and other difficult issues such as drugs and alcohol is an objective that will be continuing on into this school year. Looking forward into this coming year it
would be important to note the change in administrative staffing. Burton expresses excitement for the new team which is becoming acclimated to the unique Millburn School District while also recognizing the excellent support she received from the administrators who have retired. “They were a great group of people with a lot of wisdom and experience,” says Burton. One of the most exciting assets of the new school year will be the continued development of communications between the administrative offices and the community. This will also include an overhaul to the district website as well as the potential for a district app which could allow for immediate access to district information. Burton also explains initiatives “for opportunities for two way communications,” allowing the community closer contact with their district administrators as well as different venues for feedback from the community. “Parents are a great resource we could be tapping into,” Burton says, expressing that educators and administrators are only able to see one side of a student’s life. By opening lines of communications parents will be able
to give educators an understanding of their student’s lives outside of school and therefore help improve on ways to better enhance their children’s lives. Another great resource which will be implemented with grades six to 12 will be the use of Google Classroom, which is a process already implanted in some classrooms in the district. This tool gives educators an opportunity to create a virtual classroom for students to use as a resource for notes, assignments and as a way to open the lines of communication between teachers and students. Overall Burton expresses a message of welcome to students, staff and new staff members to a district she states is a “great place to work each and every day,” while also offering words of wisdom to get the year rolling, “keep moving the district forward; we have to move forward or else we are moving backward. How will you be moving forward this year?” For more information about the referendum visit the website at https://sites.google.com/a/millburn.org/millburn-referendum.

Local Blood Drives Offered
ew Jersey Blood Services plans to conduct local blood drives which are open to the public. The following drives are scheduled: Thurs., Sept. 22, Drew University Center Ehinger Center, Madison, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fri., Sept. 23, Madison Area YMCA, Madison, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mon., Sept. 26, Knights of Columbus 3665, Netcong, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 29, Lincoln Equities, Rockaway, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center (NYBC) is asking for help to maintain an adequate supply of all blood types, but especially O-negative – the “universal” blood which can be transfused into anyone in an emergency. In addition, hundreds of additional blood drives need to be scheduled to meet projected hospital demand. Current inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target level. “It’s simple: hospital patient demand for blood often outpaces our best efforts to re-
cruit donors and schedule blood drives,” said NYBC Executive Director of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli. “There are always reasons but we have to overcome that for the sake of hospital patients who need us.” “This is one of the toughest times of the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking for our dedicated supporters to roll up their sleeves to make sure we’re able to provide our hospital partners with whatever they need to take care of their patients.” Blood products have a short shelf life – from five to 42 days, so constant replenishment is necessary. Each and every day there are patients who depend on the transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to stay alive. But blood and blood products can’t be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center. To donate blood or for information on how to organize a blood drive call 1-800933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.

Educational Music Class Blooming In NJ
here is a new music program that opened up in New Jersey that will get little ones dancing, singing and thinking. Located in the Mondo building in Summit, Songs For Seeds is taking registration for its fall session. The business grew out of its parent company Apple Seeds in Manhattan, N.Y. Songs For Seeds began at its NJ location in June with 30 kids signed up for the summer session. With seeds already planted, the music program is blossoming and attracting even more young participants eager to take part. “You have to see it,” says Debbie Martin of Morristown, franchise owner of Songs For Seeds in Summit. “What makes us stand out” is the “kind of engagement. We encourage the children eye to eye. The babies are listening to rhythm, music and beat.” Martin describes Songs For Seeds as “really innovative and highly engaging program for kids. A well-structured and happy
by Cheryl Conway
music class. We have a three piece band. Real guitar, real drum, real keyboard. Three professionally trained musicians” who lead the classes focusing on different themes in each class. Designed for babies through preschool, Songs For Seeds offers two different 45 minute classes. One session is for newborn babies through twelve months; the other session is for those twelve months through age five or six. “Children are taught preschool music and magic and motion,” says Martin. “We teach rhythm and lyrics.” Songs vary from traditional nursery rhymes to popular songs. The program consists of seven sessions with classes meeting once a week. Curriculum is designed by professionals in education. The unique sections encompass a variety of aspects of early childhood learning such as shapes, colors, numbers, animals, sounds from other cultures and magic. Studies show that young kids who are exposed to music have an increased ability to learn, socialize, perform better in kinder-
garten and in school, explains Martin. The program is unique as live musicians introduce youngsters to different instruments from different countries, coupled with rhythms and sounds.

Educational Music Class...
continued from previous page confidence. “They encourage them to participate, in a very gentile encouraging way,” with the magic, the play, dance party, art murals, bubbles, animal wheel, color wheel, she describes. Martin, who has an undergraduate degree in psychology and a master’s in business, “decided to follow my life’s dream of owning my own business,” she says. “I wanted to own a business that makes a difference. Music is like the soul for people.” Music affects the temper, moods, “calms people down,” and can essentially be the “background for learning. It’s such a positive experience. We care for the kids. They enjoy it, they grow, they learn,” she says. Martin’s goal is to branch out and open another location in N.J. as well as a class for those children with special needs. Songs For Seeds is a franchise business with multiple locations throughout the nation. “We now have 12 locations operating from Summit to Seattle, and six more set to open,” says Alison QualterBerna of Manhattan, co-owner of Songs For Seeds and Apple Seeds. “Our philosophy, also at our parent company, Apple Seeds, which we founded 10 years ago, is that children
learn through play,” says Qualter-Berna. “We believe that if you give the kids the tools and build their confidence, learning is not only exponential, it's fun. It’s very interactive. We are not presenting to them, we are working with them.” A native of Short Hills who attended Millburn High School, Qualter-Berna, a mother of three including two twins, founded Apple Seeds with another mother of twins, Allison Schlanger, when the pair realized the challenges of working mothers. “It was very frustrating to go to music classes with twins,” says Qualter-Berna. “We couldn’t fit twin strollers in the elevator. We both had jobs, the struggle of being a working mother.” The two were inspired “to start a place you can go, doors open automatically, everyone knew your name, on ground floor, you can spend the day there. There was such a need in our community; there was nothing simple and easy to bring everyone together.” With their husband’s support, they opened Apple Seeds in March 2017- an all in one indoor play-space for children newborn to five years old, with 100 classes a week, with three locations in NY. “We quickly realized we wanted more of a music program,” says Qualter-Berna, thus bloomed Songs For Seeds
in Jan. 2009, and spread to a dozen locations. The next one is opening in Hoboken. “This is innovation,” says Martin, adding that Songs For Seeds was named ‘Best Kids’ Music Class’ by “New York Magazine,” and ‘Most Magical Music Class’ by “Red Tricycle.” Songs For Seeds is offering a free trial class, an early bird discount of 20 percent off as well as an additional 10 percent off for those who present this article. For more information, check out the schedule of classes or sign up, go to www.songsforseeds.com/nj/summit; or call Martin at 973-906-8188. Caldwell University Gallery Presents A Reflection On Short-term Service Trips
he Visceglia Gallery at Caldwell University is presenting “Belize: Beyond the Blue Skies and Clear Waters,” a reflection of short-term service. This exciting exhibition features photography and written reflections on short-term service trips by Caldwell University students and faculty members. The writing and photography attempt to capture and share the sense of discovery, place and community many may not have the chance to experience. The exhibition runs through Sept. 27. On Sat., Sept. 24 Senior Sean Puzzo, who has attended Belize service trips, will give a minilecture from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the gallery. Since 2013 Caldwell University has taken small groups of students, faculty, and staff to Belize to serve in the poorest district of Belize, Toledo. The Caldwell group has stayed at St. Peter Claver Parish in Punta Gorda, a small coastal town in the Toledo District. Punta Gorda serves as the “base camp” each year from which the group travels from and to their service sites. Short-term service experiences offer stu-
dents the opportunity to experience a new location and community in a way that is different than study abroad. Optimally, students learn about history, culture, economy, the complexity of social issues, and a way of life through firsthand experiences, in either a domestic or international setting. Puzzo, an exhibition co-curator, points out that, “Engaging in short-term service learning trips promotes tolerance and the reduction of stereotypes by working with unfamiliar populations. It also nourishes personal development, self-efficacy, and leadership.” And when successful, the volunteers leave without seeing themselves as heroes, but with enduringly deep connections and an awareness of the need for long-term partnership with the community. When students volunteer in these communities they forge relationships, learn valuable life lessons as well as practical ones. Prof. Kendall Baker, the Visceglia Gallery director and co-curator, noted, “In 'Belize: Beyond the Blue Skies and Clear Waters’ the photographs, reflections and

Cadets Keep Busy In NJ Wing Summer Camp
his summer has been a busy one for many young members of the Civil Air Patrol, or better known as cadets. The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program runs all year round but when the weather is nice and students are out of school, the most exciting and unique events open up. One of the most recognized events in the Cadet Program is the NJ Wing Encampment. Each state has its own encampment, but this summer cadets from Morris County joined more than 100 other cadets from New Jersey and the tri-state area in a rigorous eight-day summer camp at Joint Base McGuire Dix, Lakehurst. Each day the cadets were woken up and hurried out to their formations while the morning was still pitch dark. The week consisted of activities such as physical training, obstacle courses, team building, safety trainings, drills and marching, room and uniform inspections, competitions and games between groups, orientation flights with CAP airplanes, educational tours with the Air Force and Army, educational classes and lectures in emergency services and

aerospace. Two unique events were provided to some cadets during this year's encampment: a military orientation flight on a C-17 and participation in an urban tactical operation. By the end of the week, the cadets had gained much knowledge and had experiences they would never forget. On day nine, all of the cadets graduated from the basic encampment. A ceremony was held for the parents and to congratulate the cadets and honor their hard work. Many parents noticed a positive change in their kids from character to motivation and many made friends to last into the future. This group of cadets is looking to come back next year and help to run encampment as staff. Many will agree that encampment was the highlight of their summer, yet there were a few other events of interest in the local area. The cadets participated with the Raritan Valley Composite Squadron in the Fourth of July Parade in Chatham. Some members of the squadron participated in a Urban Direction Finding (UDF) Course as
part of the Emergency Services mission of CAP. They learned how to find airplane’s Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) after an accident, how to read road maps and sectional maps, types of emergency services missions, communications basics, how to properly operate certain radios, and

Voters To Decide On School Referendum
he Board of Education is holding a Referendum on Sept. 27, to ask voters in Millburn Township to authorize the district to raise funds through the sale of bonds. School leaders have suggested to finance the purchase and renovation of the former Millburn Regional Day School (MRDS) building to become a fifth grade school to be known again as Washington School; provide innovation, research and design spaces at all schools to be competitive with comparable school districts which would include the renovation of media centers at the

elementary schools, as well as additions and renovations at the middle and high school; and provide Health and Safety improvements at all schools. The state has determined that it will provide debt service aid in the amount of $7,618,199 on the proposed referendum projects. That brings the net cost of the proposed referendum to $17,974,977 from the total cost of $25,593,176, according to the township school website.
