Help Operation Chillout Help Homeless Veterans This Summer

By Elsie Walker ost people take having clean water to drink for granted. They just turn on a faucet in their homes and out comes the water. However, what if a person is homeless? Where does he or she get water?

Founder and Director of Operation Chillout, Ray Chimileski, recalled that a homeless veteran, who had sepsis, died while waiting for an operation because he took his medication with polluted river water. Chimileski noted, that from the organization’s own experience and information from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veteran Affairs, “one in every five homeless people is a veteran”.

In addition to the need for water, there are also the problems of staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter, how does one do that when he or she is living on the streets?

Helping solve the problems of homelessness and helping homeless veterans receive the services they qualify for are the two focuses of Operation Chillout. Operation Chillout is New Jersey’s oldest all volunteer mobile outreach for veterans and homeless men and women. Started in 2000, its membership is made up of both veterans and civilians. It serves all of New Jersey, northeast Pennsylvania, and coastal Rhode Island. Chimileski shared that Operation Chillout was “selected to be the statewide special project 20202021 of the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs.” (The New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs is the largest volunteer women’s service organization in the state and a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.)

are caps, t-shirts, and bottled water. Since veterans congregate where other homeless do, Chillout gives the items to non-veterans as well. In the past, the supplies it shared were donations of items received from drives done by groups or from individuals. The summer collection is done Memorial Day – Labor Day. However, this year, because of COVID19, Operation Chillout can’t take donations of physical items, but is taking monetary donations to buy the summer items. People can donate through its website at www. operationchillout.org/.

Chimileski shared that Operation Chillout goes to where the homeless are to distribute items (soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) Seeing a homeless veteran, a member of Operation Chillout will give this “peace offering”; the summer or winter items, and the organization’s card. Chimileski calls the items “a peace offering” because homeless veterans may have had bad experiences in the past in trying to get the services they need; they may have become frustrated and given up. They may be wary of help. Operation Chillout wants these homeless veterans to know that it will be their advocate in helping to get them the services for which they qualify and also help them with other needs.

Chimileski noted that this year’s distribution of items will be different due to COVID19 restrictions. Some shelters are closed. Also, Operation Chillout won’t be allowed to put up its table and speak one-on -one with homeless veterans. Operation Chillout will be delivering the items it usually gives out (and its cards for homeless veterans) to the organizations to distribute, like the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark), soup kitchens, etc. Operation Chillout will also go to other places where the homeless are known

Chimileski noted that COVID-19 restrictions have affected the organization in another way, too. Operation Chillout has cancelled its annual August Vet Fest fundraiser which benefits the organization’s Rapid Response Team Hotline and veterans rescue housing costs. “Our Rapid Response Team runs 24/7/365. We receive calls daily at our automated hotline (609-619-0861) from or about homeless veterans. Referrals come from many sources: individuals, agencies, first responders, family members and often the VA itself. We provide no cost transportation and brief motel stays and whatever incidental items are needed to rescue the veteran from the homeless crisis. While secure and safe, we arrange or provide access to longer term housing solutions. In 2019, we rescued an average of one new homeless veteran per day - over 300 individuals.”

ad breath, officially known as Halitosis, can be bothersome for both a person and the people around them.

It can have social, psychological, and medical consequences.

In general, there are two major classifications for the source of chronic (long term) bad breath: dental and medical.

Most of the time halitosis is dentally related, but underlying medical issues such as kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, diabetes, and other infections (tonsillitis, sinusitis, post-nasal drip) can be causes. This is why if a dentist cannot determine the origin of bad breath in a patient and the medical history is clear, we oftentimes will recommend a thorough medical workup.

Before delving into the dental reasons, diet and medications can also be factors, although oftentimes transient. Eating certain foods such as garlic will give your breath a smell, but it disappears after a short time. If you eat garlic on a daily basis, then the odor may not dissipate quickly. Medications such as bisphosphonates and others that cause xerostomia (dry mouth) can also be culprits.

There are certain bacteria that are found in the deep grooves of the tongue

and gum pockets around your teeth. These bacteria can produce chemicals known as Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSCs). It is these VSCs that cause bad breath. Therefore, it is important to keep these bacteria in check, in order to effectively harness the malodor.

The most common source of oral malodor is the tongue. The tongue has lots of grooves that can trap debris and harbor bacteria. Mechanical daily treatment with a tongue scraper at the back of the tongue is very successful, and rinses with Listerine, Chlorhexidine, or Tooth and Gums Tonic are also possible solutions (just be sure you don’t have a contra-indication to any of these chemicals). Using a rinse and a scraper together can be extremely effective.

Another dental source of bad breath is gum disease. Deep pockets around the teeth harbor bacteria, plaque, tartar, and debris. You should note that tongue coatings (discussed above) are much more common in people with gum disease.

After any deep cleaning treatments are performed, ongoing suggestions include frequent dental cleanings (every 3 to 6 months), oral rinses, and daily home care.

Decay (cavities) is another source of malodor. Restoring cavities is important not only to keep your teeth healthy, but also to keep halitosis in check.

Xerostomia (dry mouth) is not a direct cause of halitosis, but it exacerbates the problem by allowing bacteria to flourish.

This is because saliva has an anti-microbial effect, and keeps the bacteria in check.

Xerostomia can be caused by medications and diet. Treatments for xerostomia include drinking water, limiting alcohol and caffeine, chewing sugarless gum, utilizing a humidifier when sleeping, and Over-TheCounter saliva substitutes such as Biotene.

“Morning breath” is actually a result in a natural reduction in saliva flow while sleeping.

So, if you suffer from bad breath that you just can’t figure out, talk to your dentist and see if they can help you start figuring out this puzzle! You, and the people around you, will be glad you did!

You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life. You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true?

What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! I know, I know… now you feel like you’ve been living a lie, but it’s time to wake up!! Check this out… Research shows that those who practice Meditation/Yoga can “steer” their DNA, reducing inflammation and reducing their risks for diseases like cancer.

You may be asking how in the heck is that possible?

Let’s break it down…

Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight

response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines. These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NF-Kb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place. Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure”

to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases.

On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! Now all you have to do is start Meditating to experience the benefits for yourself!

As Bastiat Would Say, Peer Past the Obvious With Pandemic Policies

This week marks the 219th birthday of the great 19th-century French economist Frederic Bastiat. It’s the perfect time to talk about his famous essay, “That Which is Seen, and that Which is Not Seen,” published in his book, “The Law.” This timeless work remains an essential guide to thinking about policymaking.

In that essay, Bastiat writes: “In the department of economy, an act, a habit, an institution, a law, gives birth not only to an effect, but to a series of effects. Of these effects, the first only is immediate; it manifests itself simultaneously with its cause -- it is seen. The others unfold in succession -- they are not seen: it is well for us if they are foreseen. Between a good and a bad economist this constitutes the whole difference -- the one takes account of the visible effect; the other takes account both of the effects which are seen and also of those which it is necessary to foresee.”

Oh, how I wish we would have remembered to earnestly account for the unseen effects of policies put into place during this pandemic that will pop up in its aftermath.

Take, for example, the massive amount of additional debt the federal government has imposed on future generations of Americans during the COVID-19 crisis. That which is seen is the money flowing from the federal government to the unemployed, to those taking leave due to rescue money given to businesses during the pandemic. While we might be aware in the abstract that there is an accompanying rise in U.S. government indebtedness, that which is not seen is the increase in taxes that must be paid by future generations. Nor do we see the slower economic growth that will be caused by the need to pay off this debt.

Even less obvious are the unseen effects of making permanent the supposedly temporary creation of federal paid-leave entitlements. While it’s easy to point to all the advantages of such a move for the 35% of women who didn’t

Mark Shields have any such benefits pre-COVID-19, it’s more difficult to see the lower wages and employment that will result. Also hidden from our vision is the increase in employment discrimination fueled by this policy: When governments arbitrarily increase employers’ costs to hire certain groups, fewer members of those groups get hired. The academic literature is clear that such legislation inflicts very real negative effects on women.

Also harder to spot are the unseen effects of rent-control legislation. Such regulations exist in states and cities nationwide, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see more such policies implemented in this crisis’s wake. The benefits are easy to see. The rules promise to make housing in high-value rent markets more affordable for middle- and lower-class families. But once such legislation is implemented, reality kicks in.

We see rents going up more slowly than they likely would have otherwise.

When paired with eviction protections, this policy gives an illusion of control to tenants who were already in rental homes when the regulation was adopted.

What is unseen, however, is significant.

Lincoln Statues Must Go. Margaret Sanger Stays?

evar Stoney, the black Democratic mayor of Richmond, Virginia, made the executive decision to remove a statue of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on Monument Avenue to “expedite the healing process for the city.”

This demonstrated how cities with liberal majorities can take down statues in an orderly fashion without vandalizing them or pulling them down. Or it demonstrates how Democratic mayors respond to pressure from the self-appointed statue-removal squad.

The left is interested in taking down all kinds of statues, which raises an obvious question: What about the statues the left has put up? No one’s ripping those down.

In 2017, Peter Dreier at BillMoyers. com wrote a piece headlined “Where Are All the Monuments to the Progressive Americans?” He complained most of our country’s statues celebrate military, political and business heroes.

“Shouldn’t we also honor the organizers, activists, artists, writers, athletes, judges, and occasional elected officials who fought to make the United States a more humane and inclusive country?” he asked.

Then he listed a few examples of the left’s heroes who have statues.

Exhibit A: “This statue of the pioneering and fearless birth control advocate Margaret Sanger, with a gag over her mouth, stands in Old South Meeting House in Boston. There are no schools named for the controversial socialist and feminist.”

Honk if you find it bizarre to describe Sanger, a racist and eugenicist, as your avatar of “humane and inclusive” policies. Her creation Planned Parenthood is a leading destroyer of black lives before they start. But when black men and women cooperate in abortions, you can’t possibly be allowed to tell them those extinguished lives matter.

They were ... inconvenient.

Pro-lifers will show you Sanger’s autobiography in which she discussed

In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.”

It’s not surprising that no one has vandalized the Sanger statue. No one has ripped it down and set it on fire.

It stands undisturbed. It’s not on public property. The Old South Meeting House was a Puritan church. Conservatives can despair at the “evolution” of this once-Christian space, but not one has vandalized it.

Meanwhile, NPR reported the Boston Art Commission voted unanimously on June 30 to remove Boston’s copy of the Emancipation Memorial depicting a formerly enslaved man at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. That statue has stood in Boston’s Park Square since 1879. But, activists complained, it was a “white-created statue.”

“Boston artist Tory Bullock said the sculpture is a whitewashed portrayal that denigrates an entire group of people,” NPR wrote. “This is a frozen picture. This man is kneeling, he will continued on page 6

There are also seen and unseen effects from the lockdown put in place to control COVID-19’s spread. The seen effects of the policy are millions of people limiting their interactions with others as a protection from a virus that has killed many. The unseen effects of this policy are, among other things, the rise of depression, drug overdoses and suicides; a decrease in diagnostics for other lethal diseases (which will lead to more deaths); the educational impact on children cut out from school; and the long-term economic devastation.

Peering past the obvious in order to get a more complete picture is what adults do when running their lives and managing households or business affairs. It’s what good economists do when analyzing public policies. And it’s what Frederic Bastiat did with unmatched skill and style more than two centuries ago. Unfortunately, it’s not what most politicians tend to do today.

By Steve Sears or the soon-to-be 29-year-old Megan Roche, writing her own book and seeing it published wasn’t a specific goal she wanted to attain by age 30.

But then, COVID-19 and being quarantined happened. “Being at home, I really didn’t want to sit around and do nothing; I wanted to channel my energy into something that was different,” says the 28 year old. What she now finds “crazy” is, looking back at the original outline, it was at the most 9 chapters. However, once she took off on the project, putting fingertips to computer keyboard, the number of chapters ballooned to 19. “That was pretty cool.”

What started out as a suggested, fun project by a friend became the 122-page Forever Her Girl: The Stories & Experiences of a Major Fangirl. Roche’s first full book details her discovery of, first meeting with, and subsequent close friendship with pop star singer and dancer, Paula Abdul.

Roche, in her 13 years of being an Abdul fangirl, has attended 30 of the performer’s concerts, has taken part in podcasts with Abdul, written articles about her – an iPain Magazine cover feature garnered Roche a 2019 an International Pain Foundation Hero of Hope Award - and much more.

The before mentioned speaks to the author’s eager, persevering persona, the aggressive project itself grasped by a writer who enjoys creativity and being in that mindset – in addition to avoiding the recent negativity. Roche says, “This book project was a way to escape all the negativity that was going on, all the craziness, all the news ‘of this’ and ‘of that.’” It was a way to shut everything off and focus on and write about a topic she loves and is passionate about. “I needed that escape, and I think a lot of people need that creative escape right now.” It also enabled her to keep her writing skills sharp in what for others was down time. “For me, especially during the quarantine, I didn’t want to get lazy and out of the groove of writing. I find that when

I do something for a certain amount of time, and then (after a long break) I have to go back into it, it’s very, very hard.” The familiar topic, as well, was a strong seed to sow. “I was excited I got to write about a subject that is so important to me, and honestly, the feedback that I’ve gotten from people who have gotten copies of the book has been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve actually gotten messages from people I went to high school who are apologizing to me. I’m like, ‘Why are you apologizing?’ And they were apologizing for poking fun, never understanding it, and for passing judgement. I think a lot of good came out of it. People can kind of take a step back and understand me as a person. And I’m sure,” she adds with a laugh, “that the fact we’re all 10 years older now is important.”

15-year-old Megan Roche met Abdul for the first time on Monday, March 19, 2007. She and her dad endured a cold, snowy day, driving to New York City hoping to glimpse the star.

Begging her dad by saying, “Dad please, I’ll do anything to go.

Anything,” the words elbowed the elder Roche to take the day off, but he made no promises that the meeting would actually take place. Roche eventually received a hug from her hero, cried when Abdul penned an autograph on her Cardio Dance DVD, and digital photos were taken. “I knew after about two years of following her career that I wanted to get the opportunity to meet her, and I look back now, and I honestly thought that that one day in March was probably going to be the only time I had a shot, and the only time anybody was willing to take me – I mean, I was 15, I couldn’t drive, and my parents were like, ‘Well, you’re not going into Manhattan by yourself.

You’re crazy, you’re 15-years-old’ – so it was special.”

Beyond her singing career, Abdul means more to Roche, much more.

“One thing for me especially, which I touch on in the book, is for boys and girls, as a young teen, you’re very impressionable,” she says. “The only thing that continued on page 14

PS&S’ Carroll Oliva Named 2020 Civil Engineer of the Year

C

arroll Oliva, PE, RA an engineer and architect with PS&S, has been named 2020 Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New Jersey Section.

Oliva has over 60 years of experience in sanitary engineering and architecture, having been involved in hundreds of complex projects at treatment plants up to 330 MGD contributing to their planning, design and construction. After working his way up to Senior Vice President with Killam Associates, Oliva joined PS&S and established the company’s sanitary engineering group in 1989. For 12 years he provided process and architectural wastewater expertise while mentoring

many designers, engineers and technical staff along the way. Oliva returned to PS&S in 2014 to continue his contributions to the Water Resources practice.

Centenary Stage Company Celebrates 35th Anniversary Amid Pandemic

By Steve Sears s Centenary Stage Company prepared to celebrate its 35th Anniversary Campaign during the 2020/21 season, COVID-19 struck with a bang.

Carl Wallnau is the CSC Artistic Director, as well as Chairman of the Fine Arts Department for Centenary University.

“There’s definitely a sense of a loss, and also a sense of going into the unknown in terms of how do we respond to this and where do you go from here?”

On Monday, June 15, the CSC announced its season. “I said in the email, ‘We’re back! Here is our season preview for 20/21,’” says Wallnua. “Our season this year is predicated on two things, two phrases that came up, over and over again in all of our surveys: ‘It depends’ and ‘Be flexible.’”

The “depends” portion asks certain questions. Will patrons feel safe? Will a vaccine be available? Social distancing?

Wearing masks? “Flexible?” What happens if something gets postponed, canceled or changed? “We were dealing with all of that as well,” says Wallnau. “We have concerts and events scheduled. What happens if there’s another lockdown in Janu-

ary?”

“Those are the things we’re trying to adapt to.”

The 500-seat Sitnick Theater inside the Carol and David Lackland Center will, for the foreseeable future, seat 112 per performance. The season opens with “Rent Control” (written and performed by Evan Zes) as part of its Fringe Festival on October 8 – 11, and there are at this time new guidelines. Only two seats can be purchased together online, and if more are needed for family members, call the box office. Also, all flex passes are good for two years. For example, if someone owned a pick 6 for this season but attends less, you can attend another performance or performances in the 2021-22 season. “This has been something totally different, and it has affected every arts institution that I know of,” says Wallnau, who then offers the following. “You have to get out of the cave at some point, even if it’s still dark outside. And that’s what we’re doing. We’re committed to the season, we’ve committed to the productions, and

we will do the shows for whoever is in the audience. If it’s 30 people, it’s 30 people.

If it’s 50 or 100, we’ll see. I think there’s a hunger for people to get back not the virtual, but the real.”

Christopher Young, who previously served as CSC Marketing and Social Media Manager for 5 years, celebrates his first year in the General Manager’s seat come August. “It’s (COVID-19) changed not just theater, but our entire society,” he says.

“In terms of the arts, it relies on communal experience, on patrons, on large gatherings, and this pandemic has attacked really the core essence of what makes theater.”

One thing I’ve always respected about her and our relationship and the friendship that we have is that she’s never once made me feel like an outsider, she’s always embraced me and my antics, she’s never turned her back on me at any point. You know, you hear a lot of horror stories about when people meet their childhood idol. ‘Oh my God, they were so not what I wanted.’ I’ve always felt like Paula’s cared about me, and she has proven it through the years, time and time again.” Roche also points out that Abdul has proven that you can keep coming back from adversity. Just one or any number of failures doesn’t signal career’s end. “I think that’s so important, especially at the age that I found her, to understand that it’s okay to make mistakes, it’s okay to reinvent yourself, and you don’t have to conform to societal norms, you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. You can be different, and I’ve always appreciated the fact that she was open and honest about that.”

For Roche, who previously contributed to Denville’s Heroes, an offering of reflections from the area’s veterans of war, working on a book project was not unchartered territory. However, compared to that initial effort, this was growth by "leaps and bounds.” “I do feel that way,” agrees Roche.

“The veterans’ book was a great experience, because I got to hone my interview skills and my interpersonal skills with that. This book was more so talking about myself, and it was easy to write from the perspective that it’s a subject that I’m very passionate about, but I also had to be very choosey, because if I did put every encounter that Paula and I had ever had in that book, it would probably be about the size of a

bible.” She chuckles, then continues. “It would’ve been a coffee table book, for sure.”

Roche had fun with Forever Her Girl: The Stories & Experiences of a Major Fangirl, and although she was undecided throughout whether or not to publish it, she did so, and for an important reason. “I want other fangirls who pick it up in 10 years, I want them to know they are normal and their feelings are valid. I’m very lucky that my family always understood it. They let me do my thing. There’s a lot of people who are not as fortunate, and whose parents are like, ‘Oh my God, what is mentally wrong with you? You’re crazy!’

I want them to see it’s really not like that. I’ve learned so much through the past 15 years that other people’s opinions of you don’t matter, and you should never let people tell you how to live your life.”

Roche is sure there will be another book in her future, and she hints at some details. “I’ve been contemplating writing a book for kids who are going into the world of journalism,” she explains. “I know for me, I would’ve loved to have had a kind of a handbook per se for the first two years out of college, for what to look for and what to do, and how to get started. If I can help someone else, then that would be cool, too.”

As sure as Roche is that many who read the book will learn more about her, she also states that she learned more about herself through the process. “I think one thing that I’ve learned from the feedback that I’ve gotten from other people who have read it is that I have a very loyal friend group.

I have a lot of people who are in my corner, and I don’t necessarily see that sometimes. That’s one thing, and I think for me, too, I learned that I could take on something of this mag-

nitude and put it together and put it out there. I mean, I was just impressed that I wrote 30,000 words, and I do feel like at times I rambled on a bit, but just to be able to see it and hold it was nothing short of incredible. I remember when the FedEx box came in the mail with all of them (books), and I remember bringing it up to my room and sliced it open, and I opened the box and I saw them with the shiny cover and all the pictures – it was like an overwhelming feeling of, ‘Wow! I actually accomplished this!’”

Every time she’s in New York City, Roche reflects about the first meeting with Abdul. “I walk up there, I walk past that little side door where that moment happened, and I kind of take a minute to just be grateful, because I know I have a lot of friends – a lot of international friends – who I know will probably never get a chance to do what I have done,” she says. “That date, (March 19) every year, I post about that day at the exact time I got to meet her. All of my friends poke fun at it still, but only a handful of them actually know what that feeling is like: to stand in front of a person you admire, and actually have them want to carry on a conversation with you.”

Will Paula Abdul get a copy of Forever Her Girl: The Stories & Experiences of a Major Fangirl? Absolutely, but in a special way. “I’m saving that for the next time that I see her,” says Roche. “I want to give her a copy personally, I want to be the one to actually hand it to her and explain to her what it is. This book is my gift of gratitude to her and I feel like for me that’s something very personal that I want to share with her.”

I Remember Dad:

The Coming of Age of Dad and I

M

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father and I came of age in very different circumstances. When my dad was 17, in the midst of World War II, his mom and dad got the news that Dad’s older brother Edward was lost at sea. The sad news came that a German ship had sunk the ship that Uncle Ed was aboard, leaving him bobbing up and down in the Atlantic Ocean, off of the coast of England. It was an English ship that saved Uncle Ed and his fellow Navy survivors.

I think that very moment, when Dad heard that his brother was lost at sea, my father decided to join the service. My grandmother was a very patriotic woman, but she was dead set against Dad joining the service at 17 years of age. I don’t know how he did it, but Dad convinced Grandma to sign the paperwork that allowed him to join the United States Army Air Corps.

After his basic training at Fort McLellan in Alabama, Dad was assigned to the Seventh Army Air Corps and was sent to Hickam Air Field in Hawaii. It was at Hickam Air Field that my dad was trained to work in the hangars and open fields to maintain and repair the famous P-51 Mustang Fighter Planes.

My coming of age, was quite different from that of my beloved father. On September fifth of 1970, I turned 17 and began my senior year at Boonton High School. I was a very earnest, serious student. I worked part time at the Shop-Rite grocery store in my hometown of Lincoln Park. I had managed to save up enough money to buy a 1961 Ford Falcon.

And, I was dating Penny, who was a very pretty and incredi-

bly smart girl.

While my dad learned in detail, how airplane engines worked, I struggled through an advanced math class and chemistry class. I often wondered if Dad struggled in learning how to repair an airplane engine, as I struggled to learn chemistry. Sadly, I’ll never know. At 66 years old, and 15 years since my beloved father went Home to be with the Lord, I think of all the questions that I would have loved to have asked him. But now it’s too late.

My dad and I shared a dear and wonderful common bond. We both endearingly loved the home and land of the Mabey Estate on Mabey Lane in Lincoln Park. There was a big open field, that lied between the home that my great grandfather, William Mabey, built and the home that my grandfather, Watson Mabey, built. Grandpa always referred to it as Earl’s Meadow. For it was on this open field, a little over an acre in size, that Grandpa’s brother Earl was going to build a home, when he came home from fighting in the front lines of World War I. Sadly, Great Uncle Earl never came home. He was killed in battle.

From about the time I was in eighth grade and on through my second year of County College of Morris, Dad and I always farmed a great big garden on Earl’s Meadow. Sadly, I cannot find any pictures of that magnificent garden. We grew corn, tomatoes, string beans, radishes, and peppers. I loved working on that big garden with Dad on Saturdays. It is one of my most cherished memories of coming of age at the continued on page 17

I Remember Dad... continued from page 16 old Mabey Homestead.

Dad proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps. When I turned 18, my cousin Earl, who was named after Great Uncle Earl, told me that I should sign up for the National Guard. Sadly, I was rejected because I had heart damage from having had rheumatic fever when I was 12 years old.

I could say that I wanted to join the service to answer my patriotic call. And, there was some truth to that. But, mainly I wanted to wear a uniform to impress my girlfriend, Penny, and make her even more proud of me than she already was.

When Dad came home from Hickam Air Field, he courted and then married my mom, Janet Kemmerer of Boonton. In contrast, in the Summer of 1972, when I finished my first year at County College and Penny graduated high school, Penny then began her freshman year at Rutgers University in the Autumn of 1972 and sadly, we drifted apart.

Dad and I both loved the great outdoors.

The old Mabey Homestead was once surrounded by forest, before the big developments were built. My father and I would often hike through the woods to the old Morris Canal and walk the old tow path. It is a most

cherished memory I have of my father. Dad had an immense knowledge of the Morris Canal, since his father was the Chief Engineer of Incline Plane Ten East.

My father and I had very different experiences of our coming of age, that magical time between being 17 ad 18 years old. But, we also had common bonds that dug deep into the crevices of the chambers of our hearts.

I loved my dad very much. It’s been over 15 years since Dad went Home to be with the Lord. I still deeply mourn his passing.

It always makes me very sad when I hear a father speak unkindly of his son. Or, when I hear a son speak unkindly of his father. Life is short. Forgiveness is the sweet nectar of life.

Holding a grudge is the poison that will destroy a person’s heart, mind, and soul. Love is the key to all human understanding.

If your dad is still on this side of Heaven’s Gate, please do give him a call today. Not next week, not even tomorrow, but rather today. Tell your dad you love him, I wish I could mine.

Farmer Says Local Support is More Critical Than Ever

argaret Noon is putting in tomatoes this week, some 1000 plants that she coaxed from seed, heirlooms including Brandywines, Rutgers tomatoes, black cherries and more.

The spring has been unseasonably cold; she and her neighboring farmers can’t remember a colder spring. Remember that day it snowed in May? Remember that day of hailstones? Noon checks the forecast, keeping an eye on the hourly temperature overnight. If it’s too cold for too many

hours, the tomatoes won’t survive.

Farming always comes with its risks, but this year Covid-19 presents an existential threat to small farmers statewide. The virus has shut down restaurants (which buy farm-fresh produce) and limits the number of customers at farmers’ markets. Many small farms hope to attract enough CSA customers to survive.

Noon farms six half-acre plots, and all her produce is certified organic. “You can grow a tremendous amount of food in a small area,” she says.

Noon is deeply saddened by the staggering loss of life in New Jersey and concerned about the uncertainty of the farm season, yet she is glad to be able to spend her days in the field.

“I’m not a person who uses the word ‘grateful,’ a lot, but I’m am grateful I have this farm at this time. I have a lot of friends who are depressed.

“It’s really great to be here, doing something positive.”

Some New Jersey farms are experiencing an increase in demand for their CSA programs. Customers are eager to support local businesses, and a weekly CSA box is full of fresh, local – and healthy – produce. Plus customers feel reassured in knowing that their produce has been handled by only a few people.

This year was supposed to be a new beginning for Noon. She had put her CSA on hold last year. She had to have her hip replaced, and wasn’t sure she could meet the commitment. She feared she’d be crawling on the ground to complete the harvest. Her surgery was more successful than she imaged. This year, as she turns 60, she feels invigorated. Noon spends 10 hours a day in the field, and remains committed to the farm, which is in its 10th year.

“The hip surgery gave me my life back,” she says.

2020 MCPA Psychology Awards Winners

he Morris County Psychological Association offers an annual Psychology Award open to all high school students in Morris County who are taking classes related to the behavioral sciences.

Classes include psychology, human and/ or animal behavior, child development, and sociology. The purpose of the award is to stimulate and encourage the study of the behavioral sciences among high school students.

Students submitted papers previously written as part of their regular course work.

Each entry was judged independently by three doctoral level psychologists on a set of nine criteria, including: • Awareness of social and cultural issues in the behavioral sciences • Awareness of theoretical and technical issues in the study of behavioral sciences • Clarity of written expression • Originality of the study Twenty-six students from six different Morris County schools submitted entries, which were then judged by twenty-four psychologists.

There were three top scores, which were the 2020 winners, and three additional exceptional entries which were given honorable mention.

The winners, honorable mention awardees, their teachers, and their parents attended an awards reception via zoom at on June 3, 2020. Diary of a Scout Leader: Writing from the Heart

By Richard Mabey Jr. ur story so far: It is the first day of summer vacation of 1969. I am 15 years old and have just completed my sophomore year at Boonton High School. It is nearing high noon and I have spent the entire morning painting Thorpe Hall of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, for my Eagle Scout project. After eating my lunch, a man comes to the door and begins banging on the door and demanding that I let him in. Fortunately, I had locked the door. I try to huddle out of sight of this man, who is continuing to hammer on the door and scream for someone to let him in. Shortly after that, my mom knocks on the door of Thorpe Hall. My sister, Patti, is with Mom. I clean up and we all go to Moe’s Sweet Shop.

To my utter surprise, Mary asks me to her birthday party on Saturday. Later that afternoon, I help Mom to get supper ready, while my sister Patti plays in the yard, with her neighborhood friend. After supper, Dad comes into my room, while I am at my desk and offers words of encouragement and hope to me. Morning comes, Dad drives me to Thorpe Hall on his way to work. Our story continues.

I reached the top of the stairs leading to Thorpe Hall. I stood at the outdoor balcony, with the hall key in my hand.

My dad waved to me, from within his blue Ford Econoline pick-up truck. I waved back to Dad. Then Dad drove out of the parking lot and made the right turn on Station Road and

headed off to work. As the morning sun shined upon my face, I felt the blessing and protection of the Divine One. My fears and anxieties began to melt away, about whether or not the obnoxious man would return today.

I opened the door, walked into Thorpe Hall, and immediately turned around and locked the door. I walked to the back kitchen and put my brown bag lunch in the refrigerator. Then walked out of the kitchen and standing in the doorway, from the kitchen to Thorpe Hall, took a moment to take in the quiet, the solace, the comfort of seeing a thousand and one memories blur in front of my eyes. I saw the ghosts of old scout leaders, some of whom had passed through Heaven’s Gate, some of whom had moved far away. I saw the ghosts of all of my old buddies, who were once my fellow scouts, but had one by one dropped out of dear old Boy Scout Troop 170.

Across the long hall, was the legendary stage. It was the very stage, where Troop 170 would hold its Court of Honors, special events and holiday parties. I had first joined Troop 170 when I turned 11 years old in September of 1964. I was now 15, halfway through high school, and I had a big job to finish, if I wanted to earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, scouting’s highest rank.

Before I opened the paint can, before I spread out the blue tarps upon the floor, I sat down and reflected upon the thousand and one memories that Thorpe Hall held for me in my heart, mind, and soul. I had a few sheets of notebook

paper in my denim pocket and I was suddenly moved to write an essay on what scouting meant to me.

From the time I was 12 years old, I often wrote little articles about Troop 170 for the old Lincoln Park Herald. Mostly about the Klondike Derbies, the big camporees, summer camp, the annual week-long canoe trip down the Delaware River and hiking the Appalachian Trail. But this was a kind of different article for me. It spoke more from my heart, about what scouting meant to me. I remember while writing this composition, I began to seriously consider presenting it to Mr. Marino, the Editor-in-Chief of the Lincoln Park continued on page 24

I turned to my left and just looked at the old stage for a few minutes. I saw the ghosts of all those many scouts who were once a part of Boy Scout Troop 170 and had now moved on. I was furiously determined to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, so I happily stayed in my scout troop, when so many of my good friends dropped out of the troop.

I remember this so very well. I wrote my heart out that early morning in June of 1969. My heart, mind and soul poured out upon those sheets of notebook paper. Perhaps it was the strange and eerie feeling of being alone in my old scout meeting room.

It was kind of a home away from home, for me. I had so very many good memories of that scout meeting hall.

I didn’t know it at the time. But that very essay that I wrote that morning, changed

my life. I had stepped out of the who, what, when, where and why of straight forward journalism, and had written an essay that poured forth from the deepest chords and chambers of my heart. I was beginning to grow as a writer.

I finished my hand written essay and put it in my shirt pocket, close to my heart. My plan was to type it and then present it to Mr. Marino. I then spread out the big blue plastic tarps on the floor. I opened the can of eggshell white paint and began painting the walls of Thorpe Hall. All the while I thought, “I hope Mr. Marino publishes my composition.”

he Chester Lions Club recently held its yearly installation ceremony for officers and board members for the year 2020-2021.

The ceremony was held outdoors at Chubb Park in Chester in keeping with recommendations from authorities regarding COVID19 limitations.

A large number of members attended this ritual that has been carried out for over 50 years of the clubs existence. Each member was distancing from their neighbor to remain in compliance with current norms.

Stepping down from the office of president was Stan Pukash, who is a charter member of the club, having been active for 50 years.

The new president is Marc Moffitt, a

resident of Randolph, who has been a long time member of the Chester Lions Club.

Moffitt plans to guide the club through another year of accomplishments. Marc will carry on the Lions Mission Statement; "To empower volunteers to serve their community, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.”

Morris County Awarded Triple-A Bond Rating For 45th Consecutive Year

orris County has been awarded the top-ranked Triple-A bond rating from the nation’s two largest rating agencies, Moody’s Investors Services, Inc., and Standard & Poor’s, for the 45th consecutive year, with the ratings agencies saying the county’s stable management and fiscal policies should allow it to endure the current health crisis.

In particular, the ratings agencies lauded the Board of Freeholders’ response to the COVID-19 crisis, particularly creation of a COVID-19 Strategic Planning Advisory Committee, which is reviewing short-term and long-term ramifications of the health pandemic and planning a safe and prudent reopening of Morris County.

The Triple-A rating benefits county residents by allowing the county to take advantage of the best possible interest and financing rates, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. In effect, it means the county has exceptional credit worthiness because the county can easily meet its financial commitments.

“We view positively that the county started a (COVID-19) task force looking at longer-term economic and financial impact of the pandemic on the county’s

finances,’’ S&P stated in its report. “A stable outlook reflects our opinion of Morris County’s very strong and diverse economy, which we expect will show resiliency during this economic downturn.’’

Moody’s stated: “While many local governments have seen seriously deleterious financial impacts thanks to the pandemic, Morris County appears to be weathering the storm more smoothly than most.’’

S&P awarded its highest rating for Morris County due to some key factors: • Very strong economy • Very strong management • Budgetary performance • Very strong budget flexibility • Very strong liquidity • Strong institutional framework Moody’s said the county’s current strengths include: • Substantial tax base and diverse economy • Strong resident wealth and income • Financial flexibility • Conservative fiscal management practices “Over the years, Morris County has been proactive when it comes to planning and finance, looking at the long-term pic-

ture rather than reacting to what comes our way. I think that foresight is a key factor in our continued Triple-A status,’’ said Freeholder Director and Budget Subcommittee Chair Deborah Smith.

“They were impressed by Morris County’s reaction to COVID-19, to see how we are effectively dealing with these unprecedented issues,’’ said Freeholder John Krickus, a member of the Freeholder Budget Subcommittee. “It has taken years of hard work to put our county in such great fiscal shape to handle it, while also preparing for the future.’’

“It was gratifying to hear the ratings agencies talk about the stability of Morris

County and the professionalism of county management and staff,’’ said Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo, also a member of the Freeholder Budget Subcommittee.

Morris County has had a Triple-A rating since 1975. It was the first county government in New Jersey to obtain the prestigious rating and is one of about a dozen in the nation to achieve it.

The 2020 renewed Triple A ratings were made after a county finance team, comprised of Freeholders, the County Administrator, Assistant County Administrator, County’s Chief Financial Officer, and others made virtual presentations to ratings agencies last month.

Often times, Lines wishes his dad were still here, just to ask his advice. “Oh, of course. That’s a given. Just dealing with people. People are great, I love them, but people are challenging, humanity is challenging, so is dealing with individuals. Just from his experience – what he would counsel them to do and recommend them to do

– he was patient and understanding, very accepting. It was always good to hear his voice.”

Don Jones, pastored in the Methodist Church after his 1961 ordination, and during his tenure, served at churches in Suffern and Port Jervis, New York, and Paterson, Wyckoff and Midvale, New Jersey. direction, but saw his talents, and encouraged him to exercise them. He was 18 when he discovered his calling. “My parents always supported me,” Jones says, “and the different church (Jones represents the Assemblies of God) wasn’t a big deal. It was bible-believing and that’s what was important to them.”

Jones saw from an early age that his son, Matt Jr., 28, had an affinity for God, he recognizing the vision while in a high school youth group. “It was a natural transition for him,” his dad says. He then pauses, and states, “You know what’s really cool? He’s Matt Jones’s son, but now I’m Matt Jones’s dad.” Jones serves at the Freehold Assembly of God. 26-year-old Kody Vagle and his wife, Jaime, work at Mountaintop Church as the Directors of Children’s Ministry. Vagle is an ordained minister within the Assemblies of God fellowship and Youth Pastor at Mountaintop Church, joining the staff in September 2015.

Vagle’s maternal grandfather, Cyril Chegwin, was a lifelong minister of the Gospel within the Assemblies of God fellowship.

“He planted and pastored multiple churches in his nearly 50 years of ministry,” says his grandson, “and he even served with

his wife Marlene as a traveling missionary/ evangelist in Canada. Ministry wasn’t just a job for him; it was his life. The After Charbroil and Ice Cream Parlor Celebrates 50 Years in Business

By Steve Sears hey told John Davis, when in 1969 he unveiled his plans for a family-style eatery on the Route 206 roadside in Flanders, that it wouldn’t work.

The After Charbroil and Ice Cream Parlor officially celebrated 50 years in Mount Olive on July 1. If those naysayers are still around, what are they saying now? Davis, 84, says, “If you haven’t been to The After, you should try it.” You can. The After is open 7 days a week, 6: 00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the summer, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the fall, winter, and spring.

While you’re there, Davis might engage you in conversation about the history of his eatery. In fact, he kids that there is a book in his future.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating at The After, which saw business suffer the first couple of weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it never closed. “It’s 24/7, 365 days (a year),” says Davis.

“When I was young – 16, 17, 18 years old – we used to go to Seaside Heights,” says the Morristown born and raised Davis. “We used to go down after work and they had this drive-in place that was off the beach a little way, where they had carhops and all that. And I was thinking, ‘Boy, this guy’s making a good crowd.’ It stuck in my mind.” However, he got married, he and his late wife Rosalie had three children, and he initially was in the dry-cleaning and laundry business with his sister and brother-in-law.

“That wasn’t working out so well, so I said, ‘I’m going to try and open up a restaurant.’”

Financially challenged at that time, he wasn’t deterred. He was directed by a real estate agent to a piece of property for sale on Route 206. He borrowed $100 from his dad, and the land was held for six months.

Towards the end of month number five, after he was given advice that 1 out of every 10 cars that drove by on Route 206 had to enter his eatery or he’d never survive, he

“Jay, Robin, Joey and Joey, Jr. – they’re all good. I appreciate all the help I’ve had,” says her father.

Rosalie Davis passed away two years ago this month, but her memory lives on. She and John were married for 62 years. “She did all my bookwork; she backed me up all the way,” says Davis. “She used to make my meatballs to take to the restaurant. She worked there with me a couple of weeks or a month or so (early on) and I said, ‘This isn’t going to work.’ We had three little children (Johnny, Danny, and Gina).” Johnny and Danny worked for a while at The After but left for other careers, but Gina, who has a dental hygienist background, came back to work at the restaurant.

“She could be making big money. She said she wanted to come back to work for me and I said. ‘You’re crazy.’ She took it over from my son Danny. She’s the quiet one in the family. But she’s very good – she’s fantastic.”

“You have to have decent food,” Davis says when discussing The After menu, and he also emphasizes affordability. “I’ve always told people that if you keep your prices right, you’ll always be in business.”

It was like that all day,” he says of the then noticeably mild Route 206 traffic. “I sat there, and I said, ‘I’m not going to survive.’” His dad was still unsure of the venture, but his mom said, “Do it, do it…you can do it.”

Buttressed by his mom’s encouragement, as well as learning that Routes 80 and 287 would soon be open nearby, he envisioned a future flourishing area. “That’s when I made up my mind and said, ‘Okay, I’ve got to do this.’”

The name for the restaurant came from a Hackettstown photographer, Brooke Hersh, for whom Davis had done some electrical work and had mentioned to him his restaurant “dream.” “In the middle of the night one night, about 2:30 - 3:00 in the morning, my phone rang. I answered the phone and he (Hersh) said, ‘The After.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about, ‘The After?’ He said, ‘Your restaurant, call it ‘The After.’ I asked why, and he said, ‘Well, you’re looking Long time employees for a name. Chester Shop Makes Home Accents Today’s Retail Stars List For 2020

By Steve Sears wner Barbara Clark Collins and her Chester-located home furnishing and design shop, The Whistling Elk, are celebrating a 30th anniversary in a special way this year, and being a three-decade business is not the only reason. The Whistling Elk was recently named one of Home Accents Today’s 2020 Retail Stars.

Collins, who was also nominated in 2007, says, “It makes me very, very proud.

I love my store, I work very, very hard, and my customers love my store, and it brings happiness to people who come in here.

That means a lot to me.”

The Whistling Elk, which was founded in 1990, is a home furnishing store, and Collins also does interior design. “What I like to think,” says Collins, “is that it makes people happy to come in my store because it’s absolutely beautiful – and they enjoy it, it makes them feel good. I help them put their home together, so they have the same feeling. So, I kind of feel like I bring a lot of happiness to people.”

eople rely on the internet every day. In recent months, reliance on digital technology was pushed even further as social distancing measures had the world going online for school and work and to maintain relationships with friends and family.

By Steve Sears 6-year-old Caleigh Lans, a liver transplant recipient and member of Team Lans, which does the yearly American Liver Foundation Live Life Walk, remembers it well.

“When I was about 11, I began experiencing symptoms that I would later find were linked to liver disease,” says the Ridgewood resident. “I rapidly lost weight, I experienced intense itching on my legs, so much so that I would scratch until I bled. My skin became discolored and yellow. I went from doctor to doctor and they all recommended different specialists and I felt like I was falling down a rabbit hole, but I didn’t really have a choice. I kept going to the doctors, I kept getting blood work done, I even went to several neurologists to see if it was something in my head. Finally, after we couldn’t take the lack of answers anymore, my parents took me to the ER. Blood work was drawn and that’s when they discovered my liver numbers were way off.”

Lans, who works as a real estate agent in Garfield, was again sent to a multitude of doctors, her visits taking her to a hospital in Hackensack, but also beyond to one in New York City, and she and her parents even flew out to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to see if the mystery of her illness could be discovered. “I spent the entirety of my high school years in and out of hospitals,” she says, “too sick to participate.”

By the time Lans was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a chronical disease which attacks the bile ducts both inside and outside a person’s liver, the illness had progressed so much she had to be put on a transplant list. “About a month later, I got the call and went into surgery!” she says.

Lans was the first in her family to suffer from liver disease, and every year since her liver transplant in March

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population.

Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times. With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

Although I am feeling MUCH better now, having had a liver transplant, it will be a lifelong battle for me. My immune system is severely compromised, so especially during times like these (a pandemic), it’s scary for me.

The American Liver Foundation’s mission is to fund the research to prevent and treat liver disease. That has become my personal mission as well.”

Lans credits some amazing people she works with who have also decided to make defeating liver disease their mission, and herself states her purpose in the fight, especially in these trying times. “I wouldn’t be doing my duty as a transplant survivor and advocate if I didn’t touch on this when discussing the ultimate goal of defeating liver disease.

You see, although having a liver transplant 100% saved my life, the road to recovery didn’t stop there. In order to keep my body from rejecting the transplanted liver, I am on many drugs that completely wipe out my immune system, so it doesn’t ‘fight back’ against the transplanted organ.

Of course, that means I can’t really fight off anything. I am at an incredible risk for common colds and flus but during a (COVID-19) pandemic, it’s especially concerningCathy as I am Kelly very much at risk for contracting this as well. Long Time Parishioners Recall the Humble Beginnings of St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Parish

By Steve Sears here are many folks who are familiar with the “new” (circa 1963) St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish church building, which is located at 375 Main Street in Chester. However, the genesis of the parish itself goes back much further, almost 80 years.

Joanne Carr has been a parish member since 1959. “I have a history of St. Lawrence Church,” she says, “and it says June 1941 (was the date of the first Mass).” That Mass, prior to the formation of the actual parish itself, was held in Mrs. Water Serbe's home parlor. Her house (which has since been moved) was located across the road from the eventual first St. Lawrence the Martyr church building.

That old church structure, which is currently abandoned, became Chester Borough's Town Hall for a period.

Dr. Joseph Cillo became a parishioner in 1962 and has sung in the choir since 1964. “The house (Mrs. Serbe’s) was moved to downtown Chester,” he says. “The power company had to move power lines, they had this great trailer truck with many wheels, and they put the house on it and moved it to downtown Chester.”

Families in town had been attending Mass at St. Joseph’s Parish in Mendham in the early 1940s. “The people in Chester,” says Cillo, “there were not a lot of Catholics, so they used to drive down to Mendham for Masses at St. Joseph’s. Finally, that’s when they started having like a

mission church at Serbe’s house. The priests from Mendham - they were not assigned here - came up and said a Mass at Serbe’s house.”

It was supposed to be a temporary setup, but instead lasted for almost 9 years, and eventually attendees stretched from the parlor to the hallway and stairs, and the number was close to 100. The first Catholic priest in town arrived in 1947, and soon plans were developed to build a new church to house the faithful. Property across from the Serbe home was purchased, ground was broken in 1949, and the first Mass in the new church was celebrated on Easter Sunday in 1950. The number of families had grown to 300 by 1957, and a new church was built on Main Street. “The Borough of Chester bought the old building from the church,” says Cillo. “And those funds were used to help build the new St. Lawrence church.”

The first Mass at the new 800-seat church was celebrated in November 1963. The opening celebration was to be held on Thanksgiving Day, but the assassination of President John F. Kennedy changed things drastically.

“I remember,” Carr says, “going in and cleaning up the pews and getting it ready for that Mass.”

“Because of the assassination of President Kennedy,” adds Cillo, “they moved the opening to the previous Sunday and had the first Mass on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 1963 as a mass for the memory of President Ken-

nedy. In other words,” he continues, “we would’ve had a joyous first Mass on Thanksgiving, but instead it was a more somber, solemn Mass.”

Carr serves as a Eucharistic Minister, has served on the parish advisory board, is a member of the Rosary Society, and is still in charge of the Environmental Liturgical Committee. She credits parish growth to the priests and their associates, and all of their volunteers from the parish who gave up a lot of time for their talents and treasures. Rev. Nicholas Bozza has been Pastor since 2013. “The growth of the parish, it’s grown to probably over 1,000 families now,” Carr says. “We have so many new programs; evangelization is a big thing. We have excellent religious education programs for the kids, and for adults, too, lots of religious education programs. We have a good youth ministry program, and now we have permanent deacons in the church that help the priests.”

Four parishes have spun off from St. Lawrence the Martyr. “Our Lady of the Mountain in Schooley’s Mountain, St. Luke’s in Long Valley, St. Matthew’s in Ironia, and St. Mark’s in Washington Township – those four churches were spun off from St. Lawrence,” says Cillo, “St. Lawrence was growing so much that they had these churches spin off.”

Long Valley School Mascot Stars in Children’s Book

ack in the 1970s, Bowser the Basset Hound lived with the Chase family on Old Farmers Road in Long Valley, New Jersey. Bowser loved children. When Pam and Michael Chase left for middle school each weekday, he was lonely. One morning he walked over to Old Farmers Road Elementary School in search of friends.

In those days, it wasn’t uncommon for dogs to run loose in neighborhoods, and school doors were left wide open in warm weather. So that particular day Bowser just wandered in. He was welcomed by everyone, the principal, school nurse, teachers, support staff and of course the children. Over time he became a regular visitor delighting everyone with his antics.

First, he’d visit the principal who always gave him a dog cookie, then it was onto the nurse’s office. The nurse also gave him a treat. Next, he’d waddle down the

halls and pop into classrooms. Usually, he was welcomed. Except the music teacher closed the door and kept him out. So, Bowser sat in the hallway howling in tune with the children singing.

Over the years, Bowser had many adventures at the school, he joined students on stage during a holiday performance and had to be removed, he participated in many student birthday parties, followed along while Principal Kopecki played his bagpipes in the hallway and so much more.

Eventually, the beloved Basset Hound became the school mascot. Articles and photos of Bowser with Farmer’s Road students appeared in the Observer Tribune a number of times.

Spiotta-DiMare has been writing animal books for adults and children for 40 years. In the last seven, she also started teaching Introduction to Book Publishing classes. Kwiatkoski was one of her first students. “Becky and I are avid animal lovers and easily became good friends,” Spiotta-DiMare says. “I’m proud to say she is my star student having self-published four books since taking the class. Her titles are: Harley and Heloise: It’s a Rescue, Paisley You’re Crazy, Moose is Loose and Bo’s Pond.”

“I was really excited to have the opportunity to co-author a book with Loren,” Kwiatkoski says. “I requested stories from past principals, teachers, students and others who knew Bowser. The anecdotes were so touching and sometimes just amazing.”

Spiotta-DiMare adds, “I’ve never co-authored a book before but I have to say it was a lot of fun. I’d certainly do it again.”

The author’s previous books have been recognized by the Dog Writers Association of America, Doris Day Animal Foundation, Humane Society of the United States, USA Book News, and the EQUUS Film and Arts

Fest.

The co-authors entitled their book, Bowser’s Back! and hired Long Valley animal artist Rebecca Backer to illustrate.

“Rebecca joined the Just 4 Kids Writers Group I chair in Long Valley,” Spiotta-DiMare says. “When I saw samples of her work, I said to Rebecca, ‘You have missed your calling, you should be illustrating children’s books!” Interestingly, Backer’s son attended Old Farmers Road School.

Both authors say Backer did an amazing job of capturing Bowser’s likeness and expressions. “She really brought his story to life,” they echo.

The story was further enhanced by graphic artist Lynn Eberenz of Mendham. who designed the book. Eberenz is also a visual artist and member of Just 4 Kids.

Bowser’s Back! is sure to appeal to Long Valley residents especially those who knew Bowser, Basset Hound lovers and children of all ages.

Pandemic Forces Students to Rethink Annual Convention, Education Sessions

pandemic and a canceled annual convention strengthened the resolve to gather — if only virtually — for student leaders of Key Club International.

The preeminent service leadership group for high school students typically sees 1,000 students at its annual convention. This summer, more than 4,500 members registered for a three-day summer online leadership conference. A key component of the meeting is a series of sessions on creating a Culture of Care in high schools around the world.

“It was important to us to be able to connect, to offer relevant content for continuing education and to have something we could all be a part of in light of the cancellation of our Key Club convention,” said Kaitlin Cirillo, Key Club International vice president. Cirillo, from the New Jersey District, had the distinction of serving as the organization’s vice president during a tumultuous year that included changes to her own school year and club activities. She is a member of the Parsippany Hills High School Key Club.

“While 2020 has brought so much un-

certainty and many cancellations, our Key Club members know that leadership and service are at their core. We had to find a way to bring them together even in a virtual format to support them as they develop the skills and resources they will need to continue their leadership journey in high school and Key Club International,” said Michelle Study-Campbell, executive director, Kiwanis Youth Programs.

Students who complete the four Culture of Care sessions, featuring Burton Patterson, director of prevention and education, Indiana Coalition to End Sexual Assault & Human Trafficking, Inc., will be certified change-makers, ready to make a positive impact in their communities. Each student will receive a certificate and will be included in continuing education throughout the year.

“Of all the sessions we offered, the Culture of Care series garnered the most interest among students,” said Greg Stowers, director, Key Club International. “These sessions reinforce positive peer pressure that students can employ in their own schools and communities to help bring about real change.”

The culture series is part of Study-Campbell’s approach to youth protection for Kiwanis youth programs.

“This was always intended to be the third anchor of our youth protection initiative,” she said, adding the two other facets include keeping predators away from youth and providing tools and training for Kiwanis club members who oversee youth programs. “This anchor empowers students to be a voice for themselves and helps them become those students who can change a culture in a school and a community.”

The four courses include Out of bounds: Understanding healthy boundaries; You talking to me? Effective peer communication; Removing the blindfold: Bystander intervention 101; and a Train the trainer course, that will help students as they lead these sessions in their own communities.

Study-Campbell said Key Club International’s board of 13 student leaders developed the curriculum for the summer leadership conference and quickly brought the online sessions to life. Registration is free and features more than a dozen sessions on Wednesday, July 1, and Thursday, July 2.

will be held July 3.

Sessions include training for roles specific to Key Club; information from partner organizations including Squads Abroad and Thirst Project; and helping students understand topics such as college prep, food insecurity, diversity and inclusion and stress management.

“These students have worked hard to develop sessions, create content and devise a schedule that allows thousands of students to use Zoom for continuing education,” Study-Campbell said. “That’s why these are our future leaders — when things didn’t go as planned, they stepped in to reimagine a convention, bring it online and develop the core Culture of Care sessions that will end with student certification.”

As with a physical convention, students in the online conference will complete a service project. Students will write letters of encouragement to residents of longterm care facilities and deliver them based on the lockdown phases of their communities.

As Miller’s Hill Farm Gets Closer to 100 Years, The Next Generation Ready

By Steve Sears ohn McAndrew III and his wife, Ruth (nee Miller), sit peacefully behind the house they call home, a lively and spry chipmunk nearby scurrying quickly into a tiny hole in a patch of hilly ground.

The property has been in the family’s hands since 1924, and as you sit with the couple you feel memories abounding around you, hear voices from the past.

Miller’s Hill Farm grows tomatoes; plenty of them. Blueberries, too, and corn. Chickens, four cows, and a host of pigs call an adjacent barn home. Even offered is the occasional hayride and pumpkin buying in the fall and Christmas trees for sale, but the McAndrews prefer to live by their motto, “A true Family farm.”

There is much history here “on the hill,” which sometimes John loves to talk about. One house on their property even dates back to 1735.

“There was a man who took this place and built the front porch,” says McAndrew, “built this back room, put plumbing into this, created a dairy farm. There was another generation that came in and got farmland assessment, bought another piece of property and did all this, so I know the work that went into it, and I would just love to have a conversation with people. I want people to come here and say, “This is a piece of history. This is an old house. This is an old barn; this is pre-revolution.”

Miller’s Hill Farm was begun as a dairy farm after purchase in the early 1920s by Theodore and Ruth Miller. After the first decade, when hay and corn were produced to feed the dairy cattle, the local creamery closed, and farm turned its focus and added beef to hay and egg production. Eldest Miller daughter, Ruth, returned to the farm in 1970 with her husband, Col. Jim Dorney, and began the project of getting

Ted Miller, the youngest of the Miller children, also at this time returned to the farm with his children, and with the help of his son in law, John, the farm segued into vegetable production, and continues to expand. An onsite former blacksmith shop was converted into a produce market, and now with 86 of its 93 acres preserved, John and Ruth continue to oversee production on the hilly farmland.

Miller’s Hill Farm often participates in community events, especially taking part in a Facebook group called FLAG. Ruth started the Randolph, Roxbury, Long Valley group with her friends, and it stands for “Front Line Appreciation Group. “It was started in March in Madison and Chatham, and that was the first chapter – I think there’d like 10 or 15 in New Jersey – and what we do is collect donations from the community and we buy food from small businesses and give them to essential workers. A lot of the groups focus on the acute care hospitals, but our groups focus on nursing homes and assisted living.” Miller’s Hill Farm especially works with nearby Ort Farms in Long Valley, both sides donating fruits to nursing home staff and, in the past, rescue squads.

Ruth McAndrew is a third-generation farmer, her and John’s children fourth generation. Granddaughter, 10 year old Shannon McNulty, will be the fifth generation to oversee historic Miller’s Hill Farm, she hoping to grow and apple and peach orchard in a field up the road from the farm, her green thumb currently producing marigolds and zinnias. Ruth sees a lot of herself in Shannon. “Yeah, oh yeah,” she says. “She’s kind of rough around the edges, has a spark to her. She’s only 10, but she’s a good thinker.”

Sweet Relief! 4 Reasons to Reach for Fresh Cherries When Coping with Stress

tress is a common part of anyone’s life, and individuals have long sought natural remedies to alleviate it. Surveys have shown that Americans are turning to plantbased diets for reasons such as improving overall well-being and mood, and with good reason. Many fruits and vegetables contain specific wellness-boosting properties, with the cream of the crop touted as superfoods.

Sweet cherries are certainly among them.

A growing number of studies published on the benefits of sweet cherry consumption supports these findings. Researchers from around the world, including the USDA, have identified a host of benefits including effects on certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even gout. And they’ve also uncovered qualities that can help boost stress response.

Here are four top reasons to reach for sweet cherries in times of stress: 1. Make stress eating healthy eating According to Harvard Medical School, persistent exposure to stress may result in the release of cortisol, a hormone that increases appetite. People under stress often turn to comfort foods that are high in fat or sugar, and the associated relief can create a feedback loop that leads to overeating and weight gain.

If stress eating is an issue, reach for sweet cherries. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition of 2002 shows that cherries are rock stars when it comes to their glycemic index of just 22 (on a scale of 0 to 100, with less than 55 considered low) and a glycemic load of just three (below 11 is low). The former number indicates how sugary a food is,

while the latter adjusts for serving sizes. Plus, about 2.5g of fiber in each cup of sweet cherries means glucose is released more slowly, helping to stabilize sugar levels. Crunchy, cold and sweet, fresh cherries make an ideal snack fresh from the fridge or frozen.

2. Take the pressure off blood pressure Stress can influence factors that contribute to hypertension. For instance, stress can encourage the nervous system to produce hormones that constrict blood vessels (vasoconstrictors) and make it more difficult for blood to circulate, causing blood pressure to rise and increasing risk of cardiovascular disease.

Eating sweet cherries has been associated with lower blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic measures. Consuming sweet cherries is correlated with a decrease in vasoconstrictors, but even better, the fruit increases the effectiveness of compounds that help widen blood vessels for easier blood flow.

3. Reduce inflammation In times of stress, the body will instigate a “fight or flight” response and produce stress hormones, redirecting resources from other functions. With prolonged stress, that continuous state can create an inflammatory response and introduce the potential for chronic diseases.

Research shows that the dark red of sweet cherries comes from anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory properties that rival NSAIDs like ibuprofen. These powerful antioxidants have been shown in studies of sweet cherry consumption to help reduce oxidative stress that contributes to

inflammation.

4. Get a good night’s sleep Stress and sleep are closely intertwined.

When experiencing stress, sleep can be interrupted or cut short as anxious thoughts rise to the surface. At the same time, prolonged sleep disruption can increase stress, as the body has insufficient time to recharge and repair.

Sweet cherries are a good source of tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin, compounds that have a hand in regulating sleep cycles and contributing to feelings of

well-being. Experts suggest enjoying a serving of the fruit about an hour before bedtime to benefit.

How College Students Can Confront Returning to Campus

he world’s response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus left no aspect of life untouched. People from all walks of life had to make sacrifices to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus, and college students were no exception.

Many colleges and universities abruptly canceled in-person classes in mid-March 2020, forcing students to finish their coursework via remote learning. That response had a significant impact on the 2019-20 school year, and the virus figures to affect the upcoming school year just as much. In fact, many colleges and universities are beginning the coming school year early in the hopes that students can continue their educations on campus but be safely back home by late November, when many scientists are anticipating a second wave of COVID-19 infections

will arrive.

Schools that are reopening this summer insist that it is safe to do so, and have even indicated their intentions to implement new practices to ensure their campuses are safe and healthy environments in which to learn.

For example, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is reconfiguring in-person course instruction to include physical distancing provisions. Small classes will meet in larger spaces, while lectures may be delivered remotely.

Despite such measures, some students may still be hesitant to return to campus at a time when so much about the COVID-19 virus remains a mystery. The following are some ways students can confront any nervous feelings they may have about returning to campus for a new school year.

• Determine your options. While many

colleges and universities are returning to campus, some may be allowing students to learn remotely. For instance, students with preexisting conditions that make them vulnerable to COVID-19 may be allowed to continue learning from home. Many schools’ roadmaps to returning are fluid, so students concerned about returning to campus likely have options that do not require them to sit out the semester.

• Learn about residential life. Many college students live in dorms that feature double or even triple occupancy rooms. Such an environment will compromise students’ ability to practice social distancing. Some schools, including Binghamton University in New York, are converting triple occupancy rooms into double occupancy. Both Binghamton and UNC Chapel Hill also are designating one residential hall as temporary

housing for students who test positive for COVID-19. In addition, some schools may be designating certain residential facilities for at-risk students. Students who want to avoid the dorms should inquire about off-campus, single-person housing.

• Ask about testing. Students have a right to know about COVID-19 testing protocols and should not hesitate to ask what those protocols will be. Due to the fluid nature of schools’ roadmaps to return, testing policies may not yet be set in stone, and are likely to evolve as the school year progresses.

Students should look into the testing policy specifics and ask if they have any recourse if they feel the testing policy is inadequate.

Students who are hesitant to return to campus this summer or fall can do their due diligence to determine if they’re comfortable going back to campus.
