Those at MHS are thrilled, especially since that this was the first year the school has had an applicant and winner for the Emperor Science award. “I am so honored and proud of Mia’s accomplishments,” said Morristown High School STEM Advisor, Brian S Young. “Mia was the only student to apply and be awarded this honor.” Disclosing that she has always been interested in science and cancer research, Cecala seeks to combine the two, and confides that she has a very personal reason for applying for the Emperor Science Award: loosing loved ones to cancer. “I have always found science in school to be fascinating,” she said. “After I lost both my father and uncle to cancer, I have thought more about becoming involved in the medical field and doing research to continued on page 8

and if they became cancer researchers what field of study would they explore and why. When applying for the Emperor Science Award, students demonstrated awareness of emerging developments in cancer treatment, including: precision medicine, immunotherapy and epigenetics. They illustrated an extraordinary range of research focus and interests including nanotechnology, engineering, basic cellular biology, gene mapping, bioinformatics, DNA splicing, and computational sciences. The Emperor Science Award was so in demand that approximately 600 students interested in pursuing a career in cancer research from various areas around the country, applied. Cicala was one of the few N.J. award winners selected. Cancer is an insidious disease that destroys everything in its path. So many are affected and unfortunately it has been around for way too long. Everyone seeks for a way to eradicate it, and the way to do that is to hit it where it lives through research. Though passion and dedication, Cecala seeks to do just that. As a member of Morristown High School’s 27 member STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program for the past two years, this hard working teen turned her passion for science into

Cicala is one of the 100 students chosen from 28 states to be honored with this prodigious award that encourages high school students to investigate careers in science. It is designed to empower them into making a positive difference in regards to the field of cancer research. As an added benefit to applicants, this honor provides a unique mentoring opportunity for them as well. As part of the process for applying, students had to submit a 750 word essay entailing how cancer has affected them or their communities, how science could find a cure for this all- too -common disease,
