Morristown Gears Up For Diversity Day

By Julie Ross ndividuals who live and work in the Morristown community will have an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic gifts of their neighbors at Morristown’s first Diversity Day. Scheduled to be held on the Morristown Green on Sunday, July 8, the free event is an initiative of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, undertaken in collaboration with Black Lives Matter, Bethel AME Church, Centrobiblico of New Jersey, Church of God in Christ, Cornerstone/Neighborhood House, Jewish Federation of Greater Metro West NJ, Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, MAYO Performing Arts, Morristown Albanian Church, Morristown Jewish Center, Morris School District, Morristown United Methodist Church, RAMP (Refugee Assistance Morris Partners), Saint Margaret of
Scotland Church, and Wind of the Spirit. Open to everyone and suitable for people of all ages, Morristown Diversity Day will begin at 11 a.m. with an interfaith service of worship to which all are invited. An afternoon of music and entertainment will follow, along with a sampling of local and international food prepared jointly by representatives of the various organizations that comprise of the Diversity Day committee. On-stage performances featured during the event will showcase individual performers’ cultures and ethnicity. Crystal “Cali” Woods, communications coordinator of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, said an “overwhelming” number of potential performers submitted recorded “auditions” to be part of the entertainment. Approximately eight performers will be chosen from among this group.
Representatives of the organizations that make up the Diversity Day committee cited the importance of the event and their groups’ participation in it. The West Morris section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is participating in Diversity Day in conjunction with the Morristown Jewish Center. “Teaching tolerance and respect for diversity are core values of the National Council of

been offering community education programs about appreciation of diversity since our founding nearly 30 years ago. For 18 years, we conducted a contest for all 6th grade students in Morris County, requesting that they reflect on the topic ‘What Prejudice Means to Me.’ Over 30,000 students have partic-
ipated. It is crucial that we all become aware of our own preconceived misinformation about other groups, and that we reach out to our neighbors to connect as real people.
