By Jane Primerano orris County’s own Janice Huff, senior meteorologist with NBC News, was master of ceremonies of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce inaugural Women Who Shine luncheon. Huff was credited for bringing with her the first summerlike weather of the season to the event at the Park Savoy in East Hanover. The Denville resident said she is married to a Morristown native whose family has mostly
remained in the county and she has come to love the area. Honoree Morristown Medical Center President Trish O’Keefe went from bedside nurse to senior administrative positions with Atlantic Health System. She was honored for her professional and personal commitment to nursing and health care. In her introduction, Huff noted O’Keefe was previously chief nursing officer and during her tenure the hospital received awards for nursing excel-

The scholarship winners in the New View Media coverage area are Alex LoRusso of Hanover Park

Local Restaurant Featured On Food Network’s New Show
By Stefanie Sears iff’s Grill and Ale House, a family neighborhood restaurant in Morris Plains, has kicked off a new special on June 11. The second Sunday of every month they will be holding a brunch. The most recent has taken place July 9. The brunch was actually inspired by their feature in a Food Network program hosted by Rashad Frazier about restaurants that are still going strong but may need to reinvent themselves and make some improvements in order to recapture the restaurant’s original magic. Owner Michael Romanelli Sr., his son and Tiff’s Partner Michael Romanelli Jr., who also owns Tiff’s Burger in Rockaway, and Managing Partner and
Head Chef Roel De Villa discussed different ideas with Frazier and such ideas then came to fruition during the course of the episode. They filmed at Tiff’s for four days, the final day being the brunch. According to Managing Partner Steven Nikolovski, the brand new show’s name cannot yet be disclosed because the title is still being considered. Tiff’s would be one of a few featured on the episode and according to Romanelli Sr., the show may be back to film them again to showcase reactions to the positive changes. On June 11, Tiff’s served more than 150 reserved customers for the show, holding shifts at noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Costing $27 per person, attendees were given the choice of the following dishes: French toast
stuffed with mascarpone cheese and fresh strawberries, chicken and waffles, a Tiff’s spin on eggs benedict called “Eggs Beni” with a cornbread biscuit, three-cheese omelet with cheddar, mozzarella, jack served with two pieces of bacon-wrapped asparagus, and the Breakfast Burger made from a jumbo English muffin, bacon, American cheese, and egg over easy. Also included on the menu were $5 mimosas and bloody Mary with candied bacon pepperoncini. “They interviewed over fifteen restaurants for this,” explains Romanelli Sr., “They’ve been searching all over and they loved the story. They came and visited and said ‘Hey, now we want to do our first episode on the one in Morris Plains.’” It is a pretty good sto-
ry indeed. Romanelli Sr., to whom De Villa refers as a “mentor to all of us,” opened Tiff’s- originally called Tiffany Gardens and then Tiffany’s until it was finally shortened to Tiff’s- in Florida in 1978, but it has now moved up north and been at the Morris Plains location since 1999. “I started working in the restaurant industry in a little luncheonette when I was 12 years old in Summit, New Jersey. That’s where I was born and raised,” Romanelli begins of his and Tiff’s history, “I just had a love for the restaurant. After my first semester of college when I was 18, I decided that that’s what I wanted to do, so I opened up Romanelli’s Pizza in Madison in 1970.” Romanelli then opened numerous pizzerias and Italian restaurants throughout

visit to his father. Two years later, his restaurant a success, Romanelli’s brother Dominick Jr. suggested that they open another Tiffany Gardens- now Tiff’s Burger and Ale House- restaurant continued on page 8

IMPLANT DENTISTRY For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier. Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers
By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures
Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators.
When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer administrative director of SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we

couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos.
“He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos.
“It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is gone. “Wonderful merchandise continued on page 9

continued from page 8 over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of clos-
ing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store.

The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 non-paid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way
toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t

have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs. Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and land-

The Debate: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids vs. In-Office Hearing Evaluations & Fittings
ecent debates surrounding the Over-theCounter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 (OTC) have made headlines in the hearing healthcare industry. The OTC Act makes certain types of “personal sound amplification products” (PSAP) available to adults with mild or moderate hearing impairment without the need for a professional evaluation. Hearing healthcare professionals have conflicting views on whether having this type of accessibility would be more harmful than beneficial to someone suffering from hearing loss. The cost of PSAPs range in cost from $250$350 which is considerately cheaper than purchasing hearing aids, which can cost in the thousands. With hearing aids becoming more discrete and technologically advanced, their capabilities and benefits are also becoming more attractive to consumers; but the cost associated with purchasing a pair can make them less accessible to some. Naturally, having the option to purchase a personal sound amplification product over-the-counter would be more appealing to someone who needs the help but is on a tight budget. However, the question arises: does this immediate affordability come at a larger longterm cost? Audiologists and hearing healthcare providers at Hearing Health USA (HHUSA) explain that offering a “one size fits all” solution can do more harm than good for those suffering from hearing loss. Each patient requires various levels of care, and by purchasing over-the-counter hearing amplifiers, patients miss out on the customized solutions that they would receive from getting a full hearing evaluation followed by a proper fitting. Hearing aids are significantly more advanced than PSAPs, and need to be
programmed by a hearing care professional with the exact hearing loss needs of an individual. They can even be adjusted periodically to fit the progression of a patient’s hearing loss over time. For someone with moderate hearing loss, using a PSAP will not give them the customized help they really need. Hearing aids purchased from a network such as HHUSA also come with in-office support and maintenance that long surpasses the initial purchase, which is something PSAPs do not offer. If a hearing aid is properly cared for and maintained it can last anywhere from 4-7 years, and the professionals at Hearing Health USA offer care and maintenance for the lifetime of your device. The fear of hearing healthcare providers is that skipping the professional hearing services will lead to poorer outcomes, and will eventually decrease the overall use of hearing aids or assistive devices. Hearing loss is commonly seen as an unwelcomed signed of aging, which is why four out of five adults already ignore the signs and symptoms. Professionals feel that it is impossible for someone to self-diagnose the correct level of hearing loss. Considering that
studies have found untreated hearing loss to be tied to the decline of cognitive functions, memory loss, and even Alzheimer’s Disease, the hearing healthcare professionals at Hearing Health USA are worried about the damage this approach might cause. Hearing Health USA is a network of more than 100 reputable clinics in the United States. Their hearing healthcare professional’s expertise and compassionate approach has allowed them to positively influence the life and hearing health of over 180,000 patients since their first location’s grand opening in 2014. Their local office, American Hearing Centers in Morristown, is located at 7 Macculloch Ave., Suite 1 and is now accepting new patients! Call 973-936-5774 today to make an appointment for a free hearing screening. The hearing health care professionals at Hearing Health USA encourage you to splurge a little when it comes to your hearing; it’s one thing you don’t want to take the budgeted approach with. Remember that an investment in your hearing is an investment in your quality of life!

Freeholders Honor Eagle Scout, Gold Award Winners
T
he Morris County Board of Freeholders recently honored eight Eagle and Gold Award Scouts from across Morris County for a series of ambitious scout projects that assisted local towns, neighborhoods, fire departments, local churches and temples in projects that each required hundreds of hours of volunteer efforts by the scouts and their volunteer project teams. The freeholders presented the county certificates of achievements to the students on June 14 in Morristown. The recipients from the New View Media Group coverage area were: Victoria Lynn Carson of Troop 690, Long Valley; Khang Huynh Lieu, of Troop 155,

Hanover Township; Thomas Francis McBride IV of Troop 155, Hanover Township; Aldo Joseph Bangiola of Troop 34, Morristown; and Aleks Murauskas of Troop 53, Randolph, and Mark Salotti, of Troop 188, Landing. “It is really a privilege for the Board of Freeholders to celebrate the positive efforts of these young men and women, who took it upon themselves to make positive impacts on their respective communities,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. “They, obviously, are the future leaders of Morris County, and we salute them.’’ Each of the scouts who received county certificates have impressive personal
resumes, featuring outstanding family, school, scouting and personal achievements. The following is a snapshot of their Eagle and Gold Award Scout projects: Victoria Lynn Carson is a graduate of West Morris Central High School and attends Syracuse University. For her project, Carson created a time capsule of Long Valley to help promote town unity. She created a website and flyers to advertise the project, interviewed Washington Township officials, surveyed more than 350 students, took photos of the town, researched the town’s history, and sought donations of artifacts to be preserved. Khang Huynh Lieu
is a junior at Whippany Park High School. Khang is involved with Lin Son Temple, a Buddhist Congregation in Stanhope. For his project, he led a group in the remodeling the lower level of the temple. The work included painting, wallpapering and replacing ceiling lights, as part of a total remodeling effort. Thomas Francis McBride IV is also a junior at Whippany Park High School. For his Eagle project, McBride refurbished the storage room of the Howard’s Mission warehouse for the non-profit Gellman Foundation, which collects and distributes items for the homeless communities of New Jersey and New York. He led

His project included cleaning, sanding, power washing, and painting the stand, while replacing mulch and installing railroad ties. Aleks Murauskas is a graduate of Randolph High School and a current student at McGill University in Montreal, where he is studying software engineering. For his Eagle project, Murauskas mapped the fire hydrants in Randolph and compiled them into a database that was loaded into the township’s GPS-enabled emergency vehicles. This enables fire companies to quickly locate hydrants, enhancing their responses to fires.

he Morristown Town Council recently passed a resolution to declare the town Stigma Free, joining 20 other Morris County Stigma Free towns in the initiative that aims to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Morristown joins recently announced participants Chatham Borough, Mendham Borough, Mountain Lakes, Roxbury, Washington Township and Butler as Stigma Free communities in Morris County. In addition, the Montville Public Schools recently became the first K-12 District in Morris County to enroll in the initiative. “By becoming a Stigma-Free community, the
town of Morristown will continue to move forward in an effort to raise awareness of local resources that can be provided to those with mental health issues and substance abuse,” said Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty. “I hope that this designation will help those who are affected seek the assistance they need without fear of judgment.” The Morris County Board of Freeholders in 2016 passed a resolution designating Morris County as a Stigma-Free County and asked the county’s 39 towns to consider enrolling. Morris County has created a Stigma Free website www.morriscountystigmafree.org to call attention to the initiative, provide information and resources,
and a calendar of upcoming events related to mental illness and substance abuse. A Stigma Free Toolkit also is available for towns and communities. Also, check the Stigma Free news and calendar site at https://morriscountystigmafree.org/ news/. Morris County’s goal in creating a Stigma Free initiative is to disseminate information and foster a stigma-free environment where people are free from judgment and can get the help they need to recover. For more information on the disease of mental illness, visit www.nami.org and for more information on NAMI’s national Stigma Free effort, visit: https:// www.nami.org/stigmafree.
