Morristown Church Aids Kenya In Church Building Project
F
By Steve Sears or Dr. Beverly Tignor and the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, they are seeing the seed of their sown generosity bearing fruit and being harvested. For the past seven years, the outreach and Foundation for Peace have been working on rebuilding Living Word Church and Community Center in Mathare North, Nairobi, Kenya. “It’s nearing completion, and we had a speaker (in September) named Johnstone Dundi who came from there to raise money to finish the project,” says Tignor. “I’m the chair of outreach at the church, and we are working with Foundation for Peace – that’s the international organization that we work with – in Kenya and also in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Ken Culver is the president of that, and he’s also a member of our church as well.” Foundation for Peace has been working in Kenya prior to the church rebuilding project. The former Pastor of Morristown Presbyterian Church and wife of Ken Culver initiated work with a mission trip to Kenya in 2005. At that time, the team met the Mbogos, who are Kenyan ministers who stared an orphanage in their home. “At that point,” says Tignor, “we were working with Foundation for Peace to help build a school at the orphanage, and that project completed after a few years,

and then they started working a Mathare North, that’s one of the big slum areas in Nairobi. Stephen Mbogo was originally the pastor of the church located there, Living Word Church; it was a small, tin-covered building, and there are over 10,000 people in that area, and they wanted to make something larger.” A piece of land was obtained, and with aid from Foundation for Peace, and other people locally and internationally, they began the building of the church. “It is now nearing completion,” says Tignor. “The first floor is done; the second floor they’re trying to put a roof on it now, and they will have medical clinics in the
basement; there’s a bakery; they have a place for self-development for local people, and they have the church itself. So, there are several different things going on there for the community, and you don’t have to be a member of the church to reap the benefits of the community. Anybody can go, and everybody is welcome.” In addition to time, funds are also needed. Donations may be made for Foundation for Peace, with a note that it is for Living Word Church in Mathare North, Nairobi, Kenya.
