Sheriff Gannon Receives Major International Police Award for Hope One

orris County Sheriff James M. Gannon and founding partners in the Hope One mobile substance use recovery program received an esteemed award for their public-private venture from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the largest professional association of police leaders in the world.

On behalf of Hope One, Sheriff Gannon accepted the 2019 IACP/Security Industry Association Michael Shanahan Leadership in Public/Private Cooperation Award at the IACP’s Annual Banquet in Chicago, Illinois.

“Hope One was based on a simple concept of treatment providers and specialists bringing critical recovery and resource services directly to people who may be too exhausted, frightened or overwhelmed by addiction to seek help on their own. Hope One, with its steadfast, compassionate team, has saved lives and is committed to keep doing so,” Sheriff Gannon said.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Office and its Hope One partners – the Rockaway-based Center for Addiction Recovery Education and Success (CARES), Daytop New Jersey, Prevention is Key (PIK) and the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris – are the collective recipients of the award named in honor of retired University of Washington Police Department Chief Michael Shanahan.

The non-profit Family Promise of Morris County, which specializes in finding emergency and permanent housing for homeless individuals and families, came aboard Hope One after its launch to make sure clients had essential toiletries and assistance in finding housing.

The award bestowed by the Security Industry Association and IACP, a global organization that prepares the next generation for the future of law enforcement, recognizes outstanding achievements in the development and implementation of public/private partnerships to promote public safety.

Sheriff Gannon was joined at the IACP Annual Banquet – the culmination of the 2019 IACP Annual Conference and Exposition – by Morris County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement Undersheriff Mark Spitzer, Sheriff’s Office Corporal Erica Valvano, the coordinator of Hope One, and Madine Despeine-Udoh, the Director of Self Help, Advocacy and Education for the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris.

Corporal Valvano and Director Despeine-Udoh are core Hope One professionals, along with Kelly LaBar, a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist from CARES.

Recognizing that opioid overdose deaths were reaching dire levels, Sheriff Gannon in January 2017 brought together law enforcement, substance use and mental health specialists for a solution.

The result, after just three months of planning and the formation of a partnership between law enforcement and non-profit agencies, was the launch of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Hope One program on April 3, 2017.

Hope One is a mobile substance use recovery and resource outreach vehicle that was retrofitted out of a defunct SWAT vehicle. With $15,000 from drug forfeiture funds, the vehicle was stripped of all law enforcement markings and painted white and purple, a color symbolizing recovery. Its license plates read: “Hope One.” Hope One travels at least twice a week, and often on weekends, to locations in Morris County that are known for opioid overdoses, homeless encampments, community soup kitchens, and areas where at-risk populations are known to congregate.

With the help of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and the Hope One staff, the city of Newark and counties of Burlington, Atlantic, Cape May and Monmouth have replicated Hope One and are on the road.

With a stigma-free approach and toiletries, snacks and beverages to put visitors at ease, the Hope One staff from the start has made a new contact every 10.8 minutes. Individuals who request Narcan training aboard Hope One are given a free Narcan kit to take home, and 38 people have returned the used kits to Hope One after using the Narcan to reverse an overdose.

“Hope One, led by Sheriff Jim Gannon and his team, is the best example of a best practice between criminal justice and the substance use disorders treatment and recovery communities,” said James Curtin, Chief Executive Officer of Daytop New Jersey.

“Daytop New Jersey is grateful to play a part in this tremendously effective effort to get persons desperately needing treatment – as opposed to incarceration – connected to life-saving treatment,” Mr. Curtin said.

CARES, a project of the non-profit Prevention Is Key (PIK), has provided the critical expertise of Peer Recovery Specialists and its access to treatment providers to greatly bolster the success of Hope One. Heath Village Resident, John Mika, Turns 100 Years Old

By Megan Roche ohn Mika has seen a lot in his 100 years of life. His family recently gathered in November to celebrate their patriarch on his 100th birthday, and boy was it a celebration.

Mika was born in Fall River, MA in Nov. 1919 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York as an only child. His first job as a teen was sewing lining for coats for 25 cents an hour in the garment district in New York City.

After finishing high school, he headed off to St. John’s University. Mika graduated from St. John’s University in 1942 with a degree in Economics. He was also a member of the fencing team at St. John’s.

While his wife, Claire, passed away in 1993, Mika distinctly remembers how and where they met each other for the first time.

“When I first saw my wife as a young girl, I was playing handball and she would watch me with her sister at the win-

dow. On my 16th birthday, my mother told me I was going to marry her.” Mika shared.

When Claire and John married in September of 1942, a month later, John was drafted into the Army Air Corp. He spent 39 months making moves around the country and he became a radio communications expert.

While in Washington, DC, John received a radio engineering degree at Capitol Radio Engineering Institute. His first job after the Army was with the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC. He moved the family to Philadelphia and worked at the Philadelphia Naval Yard on control towers for airplanes and then transferred to Frankfort Arsenal in Philadelphia to work on proximity fuses and power supplies. He decided to move to the midwest and leave government service and worked in private industry for Avco. Over the years, he worked his way to become Vice President of Engineering and Manufacturing for the division. With the downturn of defense spending

in the 1970s, Avco closed the plant and John relocated to work for a defense contractor in New Jersey. After a few years, John started his own company, Mika & Associates providing consulting expertise for various companies and worked with Picatinny Arsenal over the years. John fully retired at the age of 75 and lived in Morris Plains before moving into Heath Village.

While John’s moving took him all over the country, once he and Claire had children (three girls), he took them to visit 42 different states, all by car.

“Mom and Dad loved to travel. They took my sisters and I to 42 states by car. Mom and Dad went to Europe several times, Mexico and South America too. After Mom’s death in 1993, Dad continued to travel to Europe, Alaska, the Far East and South America rounding the Cape of Good Horn.”

Mika Turns 100 Years Old... continued from page 2 John also earned his private pilot’s license at the age of 51. He has also taken part in over 50 Catholic retreats over the years. He loves clocks and takes care of the grandfather clock at Heath Village today, a clock that is from 1720. When he has downtime, you can find him rooting on his beloved New York Giants, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Ohio State Buckeyes.

The day of the party was perfect. All of Mika’s family were present for the big event. Mika’s three daughters, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren gathered around at Heath Village to enjoy appetizers, share photos, and celebrate John’s big milestone birthday by his side.

“The party was held at Heath Village with many residents attending. There were hot hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and two cakes. All

of John’s family was in attendance. There was a poster about what happened in 1919, decorations for the birthday and 100 years, a few pictures of key moments in John’s life, First Communion, Wedding, 25th wedding anniversary, 50th wedding anniversary, service picture, pilot picture and a picture of John in Patagonia with the penguins. There was also a private dinner afterwards for the immediate family.”

Denise Mika shared.

Over his 100 years, John has lived through many key moments in our nation’s history. He commented that he vividly

remembers a few different dates.

“Pearl Harbor, I was in a bakery on the lower eastside, when I saw Sputnik flying over Washington, DC when I lived there, when President Kennedy got shot, and 9/11.” Mika shared.

With 100 years of life experience under his belt, it’s no surprise that John has much to offer in the life advice department. He

shares the following words of wisdom with the younger generation.

“Don’t get too upset over the small things, keep active, read the newspaperkeep learning, have a strong faith, and a good family life. Live within your means, education is important, and do what you like to do.”

s anyone here old enough to remember the urgent warning issued in a speech to the National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in August 2002 by an American vice president who had artfully avoided the military draft during wartime? Dick Cheney, after acknowledging he was convinced that Saddam Hussein would “acquire nuclear weapons fairly soon,” went on to beat the war drums: “Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction; there is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies and against us.”

There was not then, and there never would be, any stockpile of Saddam Hussein’s WMDs to be used against us.

It was worse than “fake news”; it was taking his country into war under false pretenses, leaving as its legacy death, disillusionment and, yes, despair. But let us also recall the wise, if unheeded, words of a former Marine Corps company commander in Vietnam who there earned the Navy Cross, a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts; he posed the consideration the Republican administration sending American troops into Iraq refused to broach with the American people: “whether we as a nation are prepared to physically occupy territory in the Middle East for the next 30 to 50 years.”

That was Jim Webb, who would later be elected to the U.S. Senate from Virginia as an anti-war Democrat. He warned, “wars often have unintended consequences -- ask the Germans, who in World War I were convinced that they would defeat the French in exactly 42 days.” Today, 75 years after World War II, the U.S. still has troops stationed in both Germany and Japan, and 67 years after the Korean War ended, American

Colin Powell knew firsthand how painful it was to write condolence letters to the grieving next of kin. That led directly to the doctrine that would carry his name; it says that the U.S. should commit men and women to combat only as a last resort and after policy options have been exhausted -- and then only 1) when a vital national security interest of the nation is at stake, 2) when the U.S. force employed is overwhelming and disproportionate to the force of the enemy, 3) when the mission and military action are both understood and supported by the American people, and the mission has international support, and 4) when there is a clear and plausible exit strategy for the U.S. troops sent into harm’s way.

Though the past few months have been filled with slanderous accusations that I am a purveyor of “hate,” longtime readers of this column know that these weekly pieces are undergirded by love of language, love of family, love of freedom and love of country.

My columns have been filed from across the heartland and around the world, from our southern border to the Pacific Northwest, from Washington, D.C., to Iraq. I root for underdogs, watchdogs and sheepdogs. I oppose elites, control freaks, race hustlers, con artists, ingrates, liars, reality deniers, bullies and incompetents.

No topic is off-limits. I’ve shared dissenting views on the Japanese intern-

Along the way, I’ve enjoyed connecting with remarkable human beings of all backgrounds and political stripes. In 2002, I wrote a tribute column to my friend and veteran crime journalist Jack Olsen, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack. We had carried on phone and email conversations for years since my days as a columnist at the Seattle Times. I recounted him jokingly calling himself my “one lefty friend.” We traded notes berating and cajoling each other.

Chester Lions Club Celebrates 50th Anniversary

T

he Chester Lions Club celebrated its 50th anniversary at The Manor in West Orange on November 9. The event welcomed numerous dignitaries including NJ Senator Anthony Bucco, Chester Borough Mayor Janet Hoven, The Vice Mayor of Washington Township Bill Roehrich, Chief of Police, Chester, Thomas Williver, Chester Fire Company Chief Edward Windt, several past Lions International Directors including Stanley Grossman, Bob Moore and Melvyn Bray. Chester First Aid Squad president Russi Champi also attended along with several Lions Past District Governors. Many members of neighboring Lions Clubs also attended as well as members of the Chester Lions and Lioness Clubs.

Hors D’oeuvres and cocktails were followed by tributes and short speeches by the many dignitaries who joined the Chester Lions Club in celebration. Dinner and

dancing followed.

8 Year-Old Morristown Girl Raising Money to Help Marine Animals

By Elise Phillips Margulis uby Kessler is an empathetic 8-year old who loves dolphins and other marine life. Like many other children her age she enjoys her friends, family, digging for bugs in the soil, card games, arts and crafts and watching television.

Kessler said she “fell in love with all sea creatures” when she was three. She watches television shows and reads books about marine animals. She estimated, “I can probably list at least 100 different species.”

She explained that she and her mom were “listening to a podcast on the radio that was about a photographer named Paul Nicklen (@PaulNicklen ) who takes pictures of arctic sea creatures for National Geographic.” Nicklen photographs “polar bears, penguins, orca whales, leopard seals, narwhals and many other amazing creatures that live on or around sea ice.”

The podcast reported that ice is melting due to climate change and that has a terrible effect on sea life. Nicklen founded a non-profit organization called SeaLegacy to support and protect oceans and sea creatures from climate change.

Kessler told her mom, Ellen Stoloff, how upset she was about climate change and the effects on the ocean’s inhabitants. Stoloff suggested that Kessler have a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to SeaLegacy.

Kessler eagerly embraced her mom’s idea and spent her 8th birthday selling donuts in front of SmartWorld Coffee in Morristown. As of this writing, she’s raised $384 of her $500 goal. Stoloff set up a GoFundMe page to continue to accept donations.

Stoloff, said that she and her husband have instilled a love for and a respect of the environment in Ruby and her sister Juliette. Their daughters also understand that animals rely on the environment to survive.

Stoloff noted, “Animals face existential threats from climate change, and many of the animals, mammals, birds, insects, etc. that we grew up with and have enjoyed learning about, face the same challenges as humans.”

Climate change is damaging our planet and is a threat to human and animal lives. Stoloff continued, “humans depend on animals for their own survival and for the health and welfare of generations to come.”

She shared that her family is very conscious of living sustainably. “We do what we can to help support animals and the environment by minimizing our family’s carbon footprint, reducing our use of single-use plastics, and abstaining from using landscaping pesticides that harm pollinators and other insects crucial to our environment.”

Now that Kessler and her sister Juliette have had a taste of fundraising, they are eager to do more. Juliette is planning to organize a fundraiser in June for her 7th birthday to support disadvantaged local children.

Morris Township is fortunate to have these up and coming activists to help make a difference in their community and in the world while demonstrating that one is never to young to help others.

Faith Kitchen Feeds the Souls of the Needy

By Megan Roche n East Blackwell Street in Dover, you’ll find a warm meal and a side of hope with a visit to Faith Kitchen. Located at 123 E. Blackwell Street (Trinity Lutheran Church), there is always a warm meal at lunchtime from 11:30-12:30 and positivity to be found for all in the community.

Faith Kitchen was started back in 1983. In 2005, it became its own 501c3 charity and still operates upstairs inside of Trinity Church. They serve a nice lunch 6 days a week to anyone in need, no questions asked. The line forms at their door by mid-to-late morning in anticipation of doors opening at 11:30 a.m. No matter what the weather is, people are out there waiting. Those who come are hungry, tired, cold and wet. The outside elements wear them down. Some standing on the line outside the door have waited tirelessly because this will be the only meal they’ll eat today.

Currently the kitchen is fully covered when it comes to groups or community organizations who want to serve meals, but the team can always use donations or benefit from fundraisers.

According to Executive Director of Faith Kitchen, Joanne Bleecker, “We have groups that come in each day to serve.

They bring food, cook, serve and clean up. Since we do have a regular volunteering schedule of faith groups that serve here, we are blessed that we do not need to seek out individual volunteers for cooking and serving. What we need is volunteers to run paper drives for us. Any item collected helps to save us money and goes a long way in helping us feed those in need.”

After Faith Kitchen closes down for the day at 12:30 p.m.,

Edna’s Haven, a program of the Mental Health Association of Morris and Essex counties opens upstairs from 12:30-4:00 p.m. Edna’s Haven helps people get referrals for services.

Once a month, the Zufall Mobile Medical Van also visits Faith Kitchen to help those on a limited income receive access to the medical care they need.

Bleecker, who has served as executive director for Faith Kitchen for 4 years, worked in corporate America in computer science. She has been a CIO and COO for midsize multi million-dollar companies. However, when she took over at Faith Kitchen, she discovered something close to her heart.

“The most rewarding part is making a big difference in someone’s day. It’s a joy and a blessing to get to know the people that come through our doors. Everyone has a life story. Listening to their stories, struggles and triumphs are critical in truly understanding their challenges. Empathy is always the first step toward developing a deeper, sincere desire to help. I am amazed every day by their resilient spirit.”

Bleecker said.

While the kitchen is about community, that’s what also stemmed from the organizations need for a new logo.

Wanting to get the community involved in its creation, they reached out to County College of Morris’ Art and Design department.

“We worked with Professor Yvonne Bandy, M.A., M.S., Associate Professor, Liberal Arts Division, Art & Design Dept. at CCM. We received 17 entries from her students and chose the design created by 21 year old student, Sebastian Torres. We asked for both a black and white entry as well as 2-color to be used for a future t-shirt fundraiser and other media uses. We felt it was a great opportunity to get local

college-level art students involved in a charitable organization and they were able to design for a ‘client.’ We were so impressed with the creativity and the thought put into this project by these students.” Tammy Roselle, a Faith Kitchen board member said.

Working at a food kitchen may be taxing for some, but for Bleecker, this is one labor of love, one she personally understands.

“At this point in my career, I was drawn to the goodness and importance of nonprofit work. My parents are first generation Americans, and both knew what it was like to be hungry, so this cause is personally important to me. They taught me the true value of a meal, of a kind word and of extending a helping hand. I do my best to fulfill that purpose each day here.”

Freeholders Approve Preservation Grants for Six Open Space Projects Sites in Chester Twp., Denville, Jefferson, Mt. Olive, Morris Twp., and Roxbury

he Morris County Board of Freeholders has unanimously this week to approve county preservation grants totaling $1.96 million for six 2019 open space projects, totaling 164 acres located in six Morris County towns.

Included are projects in Chester Township, Denville, Jefferson, Morris Township, Mount Olive and Roxbury, all of which were recommended for grants by the county’s Open Space Trust Fund Committee.

Funding for the projects will come from the voter approved county preservation trust fund, generated by a special county tax. The recommended awards range from $28,000 to $684,900.

Alexander comes to the organization from Dole Fresh Fruit International, most recently as their Product Distribution Manager, where she developed collaborative skills critical for nonprofit development. Sustainable Investing: Making a Difference with Your Dollars

W

hen you look at your investment portfolio, how does it make you feel? Do you see the companies you are invested in contributing to make the world a better place? With sustainable investing, you can put a focus on investing primarily in companies with practices and policies you believe in.

Sustainable investing is going mainstream: Not long ago, discussions about sustainability focused primarily on recycling bins and renewable energy. These days, sustainability reaches to all parts of the economy and our lives, including our portfolios. And unlike impressions from the past, sustainability and profitability are far from mutually exclusive as many investors believe sustainable considerations can positively affect long term value.

Sustainable investing refers to a range of investment approaches that include environmental, social and governance factors as part of the overall investment process and approach. Such factors include environmental effects, worker treatment, product sourcing practices and corporate governance, among others. The overall objective of taking this approach is to gain a fuller understanding of investments, in an effort to change the world for the better in the long-term. The expectation is that you should not have to give up returns to invest sustainably—rather, sustainable investments should perform comparably to or better than conventional equivalents. Worldwide, 50 percent of investors expect higher returns with sustainable investments and 32 percent expect equal returns, according to UBS Investor Watch, “Return on values.”1 With the right direction and focus, sustainable investing allows you to build a portfolio you can feel good about.

Implementing sustainable investments: If sustainable investing sounds like something you want to implement in your portfolio, consider which of these broad approaches resonates most with you. Keep in mind that sustainable investing is not philanthropy—the objective is to generate competitive returns, not give away money.

Exclusion investing: Exclusion is an approach that removes exposure to specific companies or industries that

don’t align with your values. Common exclusions include alcohol, tobacco, weapons manufacturers and gambling related businesses.

Integration investing: Integration approaches focuses on incorporating environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) factors into the investment process, with the objective of enhancing one’s assessment of risks and opportunities. Integration investing may result in exposure to companies that don’t necessarily have a stated ESG focus, but which exhibit strong performance on environmental, social or governance metrics.

Impact investing: An expanding set of investment strategies aim to achieve intentional and measurable positive social or environmental change while delivering market rate or better returns. This investment style, called impact investing, is typically achieved through active fund manager involvement with companies—whether private or public— to achieve targeted change and deliver returns.

Investors can adopt full sustainable investing portfolios or incorporate individual equity or fixed income strategies into their existing portfolios over time. They can use any combination of the above sustainable investing approaches to shape portfolios in a way that meets their individual goals.

Building a portfolio you can feel good about Sustainable investing is growing in popularity. A 2017 McKinsey and Company study found that more than 25 percent of all managed assets are invested with sustainability in mind and that the use of ESG integration specifically is growing at a rate of 17 percent per year.2 Fifty-eight percent of investors believe sustainable investing will be mainstream in 10 years, and adoption of sustainable investing is expected to grow significantly, from 39% of investors today to 48% over the next five years, according to UBS Investor Watch, “Return on Values.”1 Sustainable investing is not an all-or-nothing proposition: You have the choice to take small steps toward sustainable investing with a few small changes in your portfolio or dive in with a more extensive approach.

Local Garden Center Goes Green with Solar Power

ountry Mile Gardens, a family-owned and operated garden center located in Harding, NJ, has installed a 35kW solar system to cover 100% of its energy use.

The solar array, situated on 2,000 square feet of the three-acre property, will produce an estimated 39.4 megawatt hours per year. Over the next 30 years, it will offset the equivalent CO2 from burning 900 tons of coal.

Brothers Dan and Thomas Gallo recently purchased Country Mile Gardens from their father, Tom Gallo, who started

the business in 1977. The installation is the most recent move in their effort to reduce the environmental impact of their business. Other improvements include selling more organic and native plant materials, recycling more packaging and sourcing from more local growers.

“Dan and I, with backgrounds in environmental science and biology, are both very aware of the benefits of renewable energy and how climate change can impact our local environment, as well as our business,” said Thomas Gallo, Co-Owner of Country Mile Gardens.

Country Mile Gardens invested $124,000 in the installation and expects to see a return on investment within six years. The 80-panel system was designed and installed by Green House Solar in Madison, NJ, with high-efficiency panels manufactured by SunPower. In addition to harvesting solar power, the array will provide shade to shade-loving plants.

“We see this solar installation as a winwin-win,” said Dan Gallo, Co-Owner of Country Mile Gardens. “It will reduce our carbon footprint, make us more energy in-

dependent and also save us money in the long term.”

Digging History in Chester

By Bonnie Cavanaugh local veterinarian received a blast from the past recently from a team of young metal detecting buffs on a mission to recover and preserve local history, one dig at a time.

David Migliaccio, DVM, owner of Chester Animal Hospital on West Main St., was excited to hear that a group called Copper Heads Metal Detecting had uncovered a relic of his father’s old veterinary clinic during a dig last summer: a rabies vaccination tag dated 1966, engraved with his dad’s business name and address.

It all started when Copper Heads founder Trey Crawford, of Mt. Arlington, and member Julian Viciente, of Parsippany, got permission to dig around a property near the old Cooper Mill in August, on some 2.5 acres dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times: a digger’s dream.

In the day before landfills, most people would bury broken or used items somewhere on their property, creating an underground timeline of life during different eras.

It’s one of the best things about metal detecting around old homes, Crawford said.

“We get excited when we find an old trash dump from the 1800s,” he said. “These guys were throwing it in their backyards.”

Which is why he and his crew – co-founder Clay Kemple and his wife, Trish, of Holland Twp.; Viciente, and Greg Wolf, both of Parsippany; Christopher Kelly of Long Island, N.Y.; and Mike Meehan, of Millburn – are motivated by the imagined stories behind their treasures.

“When we find things, it builds a story about the age

and what was happening at the time,” Crawford says. The Chester dig revealed old metal toys and coins from the mid-1900s, “So there were definitely kids there at one time, in the back yard.”

“But then I found a coin that’s possibly from the 1700s in the same yard,” he added. “It’s the progression of history that’s happening at that place.”

“We call it a hobby, but it’s also our passion; we love doing it,” Crawford explained. “It’s about saving history.”

Crawford started his hobby as a kid, fossil hunting with family in his native Kansas City, MO. “The thrill of the hunt sort of thing,” he says. “As I got older, I got into metal detecting.”

Moving to New Jersey four years ago, he found that hunting grounds on the East Coast can often date back to the Revolutionary War. “Out here… everywhere you go you’re seeing things from the 1700s and 1800s,” he says. It’s not the same in the Midwest, where bounty tends to be from more recent eras. “They have history too, but out here it’s so rich.”

Local homeowners are often friendly and interested in the process, he adds: “When they’re living in a house that’s 200 years old, they have some sort of interest in preserving the history. That’s our hobby and our mission.”

The owner of the property they were excavating near the Cooper Mill had actually discovered a cache of 1800s bottles stored under their kitchen floorboards, Crawford said. And he and Viciente had yielded a good day’s dig from their yard: assorted copper and silver coins, horse shoes, wheat pennies, an old Ford Model T engine part, some old metal toys, and the pet tag, clearly engraved “Dr. N.L. Migliaccio.”

Dr. Nicholas L. Migliaccio had opened Chester Animal Hospital in 1950, and in 1955, bought and moved into the house next door, according to the clinic’s web site.

“Mom and Dad bought the property in 1955, then built the garage. That’s where he had one of his first clinics,” Dr. Dave Migliaccio said.

Known better as “Dr. Dave” among clientele, he took over his father’s clinic in 1985. The house has since been sold to Toys With Love.

Migliaccio said he did recall hearing through social media about a rabies tag that had been found, although he said hasn’t yet spoken with the Copper Heads crew. It would be interesting to find out who the pet’s owner was, he said, but that seems unlikely.

“I kept the logs to these tags for many years afterwards,” he said, but just two years ago he cleared out much of the clinic’s old paperwork. “I know I don’t have them now.”

He said he does still have his father’s original medical cabinet, preserved and placed in the clinic’s lobby to display his dad’s old tools of the trade, adding that it would be nice to display the found rabies tag there as well.

“It’s part of our heritage, so to speak,” Migliaccio said.

“We thought it was so cool when we found the tag,” Crawford said. “Then to do a little more research, and find that his son is in the same position and in the same spot” was amazing. “I would love to return it. I hope Dr. Migliaccio would like it back.”

Crawford said the Copper Heads do what they do for the love of discovery, not for monetary gain; he’s never sold anything he’s found and does not plan to in the future.

The group is now partnering with America’s Grow a Row in Pittstown, an award-winning charity dedicated to growing free produce for the needy in New Jersey, New York City and eastern Pennsylvania, and providing information on sustainable farming methods and other food education.

By: Daniel Franz hilmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico provides seasoned scouts a very unique, high-adventure experience with many challenges and fun-filled adventures. It is truly a trip of a lifetime which the scout will never forget.

This is the perspective of one of those scouts in his own words: “From June 30th to July 10th this past summer, 9 scouts and 3 adults from Troop 236 of Schooley’s Mountain, New Jersey hiked in the Rocky Mountains of Philmont Scout Ranch, which is located in New Mexico. We had prepared for this life-changing trip for 18 months. Our scout crew hiked roughly 70 miles, with a total of about 10,800 feet. However, the trip did not only Photo taken at the top of Mt. Springs on June 27th after departing from Newark Airport earlier that morning. That peak in the Southern Rocky Mountains. The driven to the trailhead, leaving Base Camp same day, we toured the Air Force Academy next day, we were bused to the Philmont and the last piece of civilization that we and hiked in the Garden of the Gods. The Scout Ranch Base Camp to spend our last would encounter for the next 11 days. Over following day we went white-water rafting night before hitting the trail the next morn- the next couple of days, we created bonds on the Arkansas River and then were bused ing. with our crew members that will last a lifeup to the summit of Pikes Peak, the highest Bright and early the next day, we were time, whether it was when we were push-

ing each other through strenuous climbs or when we were all laughing with one another at the campfire playing a game of cards. Over the course of the trek, we had countless mesmerizing sights, from mountain tops to the cattle-filled plains.

However one of the views that filled everyone in our crew with the feelings of accomplishment was the view of Base Camp from the Tooth of Time. Even though it may have been tens of miles away we could practically taste the Base Camp Food. I feel comfortable in saying that the day we reached Base Camp was one of the proudest days in our lives. We will never forget the memories we made on the trails of Philmont Scout Ranch.

ow that the holidays are over and the decorations are stored away, you might be thinking your decor could use a ‘refresh’. The colors, window treatments, furniture, and accessories are a bit dated – and with the cold winter ahead of us, you know you’ll be spending a lot of time indoors thinking about what you can do to spruce things up.

Do you have too many accessories?

For a cleaner look (and a lot less to dust!), rotate your favorite pieces by putting out a select few for special occasions or seasons. Every time I change out my seasonal decor, I find a little treasure I had forgotten about. It’s almost like shopping, but a lot less expensive. And you won’t tire of your collections this way.

Take a second look.

Just as a well-accessorized outfit makes you look and feel good, a beautifully accented home will give you the same feeling. Reevaluate your accessories and decor. When I work with clients, we’ll frequently ‘edit’ their accessories to use just what they really love. Window treatments can make (or break) your decor. Layering used to be all the rage, but now people like a simpler, cleaner look. Maybe those swags in the dining room don’t really work anymore, but perhaps you can still use the matching drapery panels on new decorative hardware.

Is your home on trend color-wise?

Do you have a paint color that screams the 1980s? A fresh coat of paint makes a world of difference and is really the least expensive way to transform a space. If you’re not willing to paint every few years, choose neutral colors that won’t go out of style.

Add a pop of new color.

If you love color, but opt to go with a neutral paint palette, you can add color with artwork and pillows. Even lamps come in a variety of colors these days. A new area rug can bring in warmth along with great color and style.

Update your Lighting.

There are many levels of light available and a simple change of your light bulbs can make a huge difference to the look of your room. Consider each light source and its purpose. For reading and tasks, you’ll want a brighter light. For ambiance, something a little softer. In a kitchen or other high traffic area where your family spends a great deal of time,

Project Help: A Key to Helping New Jersey’s Veterans on the Homefront

By Megan Roche or Sandy Mitchell, beginning Project Help in 2016 was one of those lightbulb-going-off moments. After losing her husband to suicide after he came back from the Vietnam War, she picked up the pieces for her children. She attended school in the evenings and worked a full time job to support her family. She found that she loved helping others, but was never truly satisfied.

“I started this by myself and was determined that no matter what, this was going to be successful. I wanted to accomplish our mission, no matter what it took. My husband got out after 11 years in the military and when I lost him to suicide, I had three kids.

It was also a real learning point for me, dealing with a tragedy. From losing him, I really had to make a decision of where my life was going to go. I could either pick up the pieces and move forward and create a life for myself and my kids or I was going to become a victim and be a complete and utter failure in my life. I really recreated my life after losing him,” Mitchell said.

With many stints with other non-profits and through starting some of her own, her true passion in life was unlocked when she created Project Help. Project Help is designed to help veterans in need. Mitchell helps connect veterans to all sorts of organizations who can help with lawyers, mental and phys-

ical health issues, housing, and more. Project Help also offers financial assistance to New Jersey veterans who qualify.

“I am supposed to do this because of what happened in my life. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I have made tons and tons of contacts. I have grand visions of things to come and I am really excited about the organization. I have a good group of people who I work with and I think that we are all on the same track that we want to help veterans get through some of their darkest days and prevent as much tragedy in their lives as we can,” Mitchell said.

Project Help recently launched their Mobile Closet initiative. The mobile closet serves as a resource to veterans and their families.

The converted school bus drives around the area and finds itself mainly outside colleges and career fairs to offer free interview clothing and career advice to local veterans. The bus also houses computers and printers for creating and printing resumes. The bus was unveiled in late 2019.

“It’s been an amazing ride right now. We have people calling left and right who want to volunteer or get involved. After launching the bus, it really became a launch pad for us.

We have been getting a good bit of recognition lately, and it’s been really good for us,” Mitchell shared.

“Project Help has been a huge blessing for me, after going through a couple of challenging years of losing everything and having no place to live. When I finally got my apartment, Project Help paid one month’s rent for me. Not only was PH ready to help but Sandy put me in touch with people/organizations ready to help a Veteran in need. I’m so grateful for PH helping me at a pivotal, intricate time. Especially during the time when many of the larger organizations declined to help. Something that I will never forget about Project Help is that Sandy got to know me personally and she was able to connect me with amazing people who were eager to help me and go far beyond the call of duty.

As a Veteran, it is important for me to know that Project Help is supported and able to continue their work, because they truly have a heart to help Veterans. Sandy, thank you times a million!” Rita, an Army veteran, posted on their website.

Mitchell’s work has become fulfilling for her in the best of ways. She is there for veterans, whether they need someone to vent to or by helping those veterans navigate prob-

lems in their life, she feels that she still has much to offer to these men and women who give their lives to defend our freedoms.

“Life is full of choices and you have to decide where you want it to go and what you want to do. I like to help these veterans come up with a plan for their lives. If you help one person, you have done good, and there is always more good to be done in this world,” Mitchell said.

Project Help is always actively seeking new volunteers to join their expanding team.

Volunteers can give as much of their time as they wish by helping out at fundraisers, handing out marketing materials, placing phone calls, updating data spreadsheets, and keeping their mobile closet clean and ready to go.

“In 2018, our target goal for volunteers was 50. Since most have limited time and experience, our need is more than if we pre-qualified volunteers. Our best volunteers, often move on to joining a committee and some actually become board of director members,” Mitchell said.

West Morris Mendham Girls Volleyball Scores First State Title

By Steve Sears t was a great season for the West Morris Mendham High School’s Girls Volleyball team.

Coach Eric Heditsch’s squad finished 28 – 6 on the season, in the process winning the NJAC National Division title, the Morris County Tournament championship over Kinnelon, and then their first ever Group 3 State Title in a 2 - 0 victory over Wayne Valley High School.

Even though the club eventually lost in the Tournament of Champions final round, it was the most successful season in team history as they finished as the #3 ranked team in the state per NJ.com.

The team had a strong 2018 season and, with several players from that team returning, Heditsch envisioned 2019 could be special. “I felt that this group was capable of great things from the very beginning,” says Heditsch, who is in his third season as varsity coach. “We had a lot of talent and desire and it was really a matter of improving in just a few areas as the season progressed. We became better at forcing opponents to earn every point and our blockers and defenders excelled in the high-pressure playoff matches. The girls were able to bounce back from a few early season disappointments and by the time we reached the mid-point of the season we were playing at a very high level and with great confidence. Our focus on the values of teamwork, staying positive and being selfless paid big dividends.”

Per Heditsch, the team had an explosive offense with excellent outside hitting from Lauren Wilcock and Cat Holtz.

“Our setters Nora Mulligan and Sarah Wilcock were consistently strong in delivering the ball to our hitters, while also playing great defense. Our backrow passing and digging

greatly improved as the season progressed and this turned out to be a great strength in our playoff run. This group was led by libero Michele Kifyak, defensive specialist Julia Trzesniowski and Lauren Wilcock.” Middle blockers Lauren Castignetti and Poppy Skjonnemend were very strong both offensively and defensively, and senior right-side hitters Skye Devereux and Clare McDonough were clutch performers who also provided great leadership.

Mulligan, who has 66 assists on the season, says “It was

such an amazing way to end senior year. All of the hard work paid off in the best way possible. I couldn’t stop smiling for days. It was such a rewarding feeling to know that three months of practice and all of those games could end in such an exciting way. I also could not be happier because I got to accomplish something so amazing with my best friends. It was the most incredible feeling for us to be on the court and feel the energy from the crowd cheering us on for that last continued on page 28

Everything came together at the right time and we made history not only for the volleyball program but for our school and all of the people that supported us.” As the championship rounds neared their end, she felt the team was proving they could meet any challenge. “As underdogs against Old Tappan and Colonia everyone was playing at their best and we all had such a positive attitude. By the time we faced Wayne Valley in the championship we were very confident in ourselves and felt like nothing could stop us.”

Julia Trzesniowski, senior defensive specialist who starred this season with 199 digs, adds, “We hit a point in the season when everything seemed to come together. We had a great offense all year with Lauren Wilcock and Cat Holtz leading the charge, but everything took a turn for the best when the de-

fense started to pick up, probably because of the difficult offense we faced in practice every day. The highlight of our season was winning the state championship, not only because we fought so hard, but also because it reflected all of our work and determination throughout the entire year, from the pre-season and practices all the way through the playoffs. Throughout the season we all worked hard to make each other better players and our team dynamic became stronger with each victory.”

2020 looks promising. “We have a very strong group returning,” says Heditsch, “including Lauren Wilcock, Cat Holtz, Sarah Wilcock, Michele Kifyak, Poppy Skjonnemend and Ally Blackwell, along with some excellent players coming up from the JV squad. The team should be in a great position to compete at a similar level again next season.”

West Morris Central Alum, Former Teacher Designs “Handy” App

By Megan Roche or former West Morris Central science teacher, building and engineering things has been something he has always enjoyed. Jay Herrigel, a physics teacher from 2004-2016 at West Morris Central (and a 1997 alum), recently created a new app that is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

During his time as a physics teacher, Herrigel was also the track and field coach at the high school. He noticed that many of his athletes had the desire to want to get a part time job while in school. Herrigel admired their quests but also understood the needs of the track and field team.

For many athletes, balancing schoolwork, the demands of a team, and holding down a part time job was just not possible.

“While I was teaching, I always kept a journal of ideas that would pop up. I kept track of these ideas and one of the ideas I had was how to help my athletes who wanted a job. They would constantly need to leave practice early for a job that had concrete hours or a crazy busy schedule.

I started out with just high school kids and college age kids who needed to find flexible work,” Herrigel said.

Handz for Hire was established after Herrigel decided to make life easier for the youth who so badly wanted a part time job, but needed the flexibility to still be an athlete and a student. The goal for Handz for Hire was simple; connect those who wanted a job with those who had a job available. The app is now not just for high school or college age kids though, anyone can post or accept jobs.

“The app is great for stay at home parents, we have re-

tired people who are looking to get out and meet neighbors and help their neighbors out. We’ve got neighbors that have really great skills and have done really cool things through the app,” Herrigel said of his audience who downloaded and use the app.

The app is set up in an easy to use format. Members

of the community can either lend a hand or need a hand.

When lending a hand, the person has a way to respond to any jobs posted in their area, while needing a hand lets people post jobs that they may need help with. The simple user friendly app is a great way for the community to get help, continued on page 34

Morris Miracle Workers Honored at MHS Play

By Evan Wechman ost families of special needs children recognize that in order for their loved ones to learn, they need to be surrounded by great professionals. The Morristown School District is no different. Throughout the school system, there are many loving educators whose work often goes unnoticed, but is nothing short of miraculous.

The play, “The Miracle Worker,” is a widely known story based on the true relationship between Helen Keller and her dedicated teacher, Annie Sullivan. Annie helps Helen who is blind and deaf, but also assists her parents in showing them how to get the most progress out of Helen.

According to Jen Frantz, who is a member of the Morristown Theater Parent Association, “ as the parent of a child with autism in the district, I was very drawn to the dynamic between Annie and Helen’s parents. Helen’s parents feel helpless with a blind and deaf child, so they give Helen anything she wants and require very little of her. She eats with her hands and throws tantrums.

It is a tremendous teacher, Annie Sullivan, who shows them that with their help, Helen can do more, learn more, and be a productive member of society. It reminded me of what all of the

special education teachers and therapists did for my son and family. I wondered if we could honor some of those people in connection with the show.”

Therefore, after Frantz who is in charge of publicity and marketing for the group talked to both students and teachers, she created an honoree nomination form.

This was sent to families in the district as well as posted on various district web pages and social media sites. They received 26 nominations which ran the gamut from behaviorists to pathologists.

Along with the play which was performed at Morristown High School on Friday November 22 through Sunday November 24th, there was also a reception before the Friday night show honoring these nominees.

At this reception, the honorees were presented with both a small gift and a certificate. Also, their biographies and pictures will be seen by all in the atrium. Unfortunately, not all the award winners could be contacted for comment and profiled in this publication, but there are some that stood out.

For example, Heather Delillo, an Assistant Behavior Specialist at Morristown High School, has helped students to participate in unified track, bowling, and swimming. She proudly

states “the most fulfilling job is waking up each morning knowing that I can make a difference in the lives of students. Whether it is a warm smile or a gentle hello, just letting the students know they matter is a treasure in itself. Spending time every day with amazing coworkers and staff makes my job that much more fulfilling.”

Jen Beeck, a Speech Language Pathologist at Hillcrest Elementary has also done outstanding work with the students and acknowledges her favorite part of the job is “helping students find their voice and guide them to be their very best.”

had to be done.” She added “we sent info out district wide not knowing the support we would receive from families and the district. The ceremony was touching and a beautiful honor for the 26 teachers.”

I Remember Dad - Chapter 3

By Richard Mabey Jr. eeply etched in the heart of America, are the sacrifices made by the U. S. veterans of the Second World War. Sadly, the number of living veterans of World War II has been dramatically decreased in most recent years. Many of their stories, their remembrances, their heart-felt sacrifices will never be known to us.

For a multitude of reasons, many of the veterans of the Second World War spoke very little of the horrors that they endured to defend the honored principles of democracy and freedom. Many of the World War II soldiers returning to America’s shores, simply wanted to forget the nightmares of the war. Many were truly modest of their selfless and heroic deeds. And, for many others, what they endured was simply too painful to talk about.

My Dad was a veteran of the Second World War. He served at Hickam Air Field, right next to Pearl Harbor. My father served in the Seventh Army Air Corps, which was the precursor to today’s Seventh Air Force.

The painful memory of Pearl Harbor deeply haunted the good people of Hawaii.

Dad would often tell me about the incredible stress that the men of the Seventh Army Air Corps endured, always anticipating another catastrophic attack from the Japanese.

I remember those years, when I was in grade school. After supper, I would be playing on the floor with my Lincoln Logs or building a car model. From time to time, Dad would be looking at his old photo album of pictures of his years of service at Hickam Air Field. Sometimes, I would look up to my beloved father and see an expression of sadness befall upon his face. I remember one time, I’m pretty sure that it was when I was in the third grade, that I saw tears fall from my Dad’s eyes as he looked at the pages of his photos from his days in the Seventh Army Air Corps.

Dad never talked much about his time of service in the Army Air Corps. In recent years, I have done some research about the Seventh Army Air Corps’ role in the Second continued on page 34

very February people across the United States and Canada pay homage to prominent African American and black figures who have had impact on the world in various ways. Each year, athletes, doctors, film stars, writers, directors, and politicians are just some of the people highlighted as individuals of merit. The official observance of Black History Month, sometimes referred to as African American History Month in certain areas, is relatively recent, though the contributions of black people have been celebrated for centuries.

Black History Month evolved from Negro History Week, which was created in 1926 in the United States by historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson chose the second week in February because it coincided with both the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln

The prominent civil rights group The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, was also founded on February 12 on the centennial anniversary of the birth of Lincoln. Each of these things makes February an ideal time to celebrate black history. Negro History Week continued through the 1960s and ultimately evolved into an entire month of celebrating on some college campuses.

However, Black History Month would not receive national recognition in the United States until 1976, when President Gerald Ford officially recognized it as an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of black Americans throughout history. Canada officially recognized Black History Month in 1995.

Although my father and I were very close and shared many common interests, I never simply said thank you to my father for his great sacrifice. I truly wish I had.

After leaving his post at West Morris Central in June of 2016, the Herrigel family moved to Florida when Jay’s wife, Dana, got a job offer that she couldn’t turn down.

While Jay is no longer teaching, he has embraced his new venture as both a stay at home dad and small business owner with open arms.

“I feel like I have learned an entire new set of skills and I have put in thousands and thousands of hours in trying to develop this app. I’ve learned so much along the journey of creating this app. When you look back over the last two years that I’ve been doing this, in hindsight you say, I would have done this differently. If I started again with all the knowledge I have learned in the last two years, I would be on a completely different path with the app,” Herrigel said.

Jobs on the app include but are not limited to moving furniture, babysitting, painting, handy work, yard work, mounting TVs,

and more. While the app mainly has jobs posted in the Jacksonville, FL area, Herrigel and his team are hoping to expand the job market area in the next few months.

“We have gotten to the point where I want us to grow to the next level, but we just need some help to do that. We have about 1,000 people in the database right now in the greater Jacksonville area who post and respond to jobs. We are working on going to a national level and we are currently looking to have someone as a strategic partner. We need help to create a 2.0 version of the app and we’re looking for someone who has expertise in scaling up the size of the app itself,” Herrigel said.

The future of the app is moving in an overall positive direction, according to Herrigel. Herrigel also puts out weekly YouTube video tutorials on how to fix common problems around the home.
