Local Resident Readies To Tackle New Role As MO Twp. Business Administrator

By Cheryl Conway s a Mt. Olive resident for the past three years, Andrew Tatarenko has a vested interest in his new role as Mt. Olive Township Business Administrator.

Preparing for his official start in two weeks on Oct. 2, Tatarenko replaces Laura Harris of Long Valley, who resigned this past May after 21 months on the job.

In his most recent position, Tatarenko worked as business administrator of Waldwick Borough for two and a half years.

As he did in Waldwick, his goal is to help make Mt. Olive the best community it can be.

“For the past five years, all my efforts have been geared toward making Waldwick a better community,” says Tatarenko. “I am excited to use my skills and continue my hard work to enhance the community I call home.”

Living in the same town that one works, with the ability to make improvement, is an ideal position to be in.

“My family and I decided to move to Mt. Olive three years ago,” says Tatarenko. “Being a

municipal manager, I always felt it was important to have a vested interest in the community you serve. Being able to both live and work in the same community allows me to have a direct impact. Mt. Olive is a great place to raise a family and I look forward to working and joining the staff of Mt. Olive Township.”

His goals are to “help the mayor and council continue the great services that have been provided in the past and to enhance the quality of life of the Mt. Olive residents,” he says.

“I will achieve this by ensuring that employees are continuously trained and provide them with the resources to develop professionally in order to deliver great service. I will also look for ways to increase efficiency and be a resource of information to the community.”

As a resident, Tatarenko is no stranger to improvements desired.

“Being a resident has allowed me to see firsthand what areas in town can use improvements,” he says. “During my discussions with the mayor and council,

I’ve shared ideas about providing shade structures at Turkey Brook Park over the playgrounds, streamlining recycling pickup, providing a Summer Concert Series, re-vamping the website and rolling out an e-newsletter.

I plan on giving all of our policies and procedures a fresh look to try to enhance the services.”

Tatarenko started his career working in the private sector for six years as a financial advisor and later transitioned to the

public sector. He worked for the City of Clifton from 2009-2012 as the deputy city clerk, the assistant administrator in Waldwick from 2013-2015, and then borough administrator there.

For his schooling, Tatarenko went through the Clifton Public School System, obtained a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Villanova University and a master’s of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson Univercontinued on page 4

Change Your Genes Everyday Yep… I’m Referring To Your Genes Not Your Jeans

I

mean you should probably change your jeans every few days as well, but that’s a discussion for another time and another day.

You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life.

You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true? What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! I know, I know… now you feel like you’ve been living a lie, but it’s time to wake up!! You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down…

Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other

processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines.

These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NFKb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place. Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases.

On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases

and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! “I have experience managing large scale capital improvement projects -municipal pool improvements, road rehabilitation, track resurfacing, playground installations, etc.- which will help me navigate through some of the future projects in Mt. Olive,” he says. “My experience in grant writing will also assist in acquiring local, state and federal grants where applicable. Overall, my passion for the profession and striving to offer the best services possible will be an attribute to the position.”

He looks forward to his new role.

“I am open and ready to handle any challenge that comes my way,” he says, adding that his start date is “just in time to be involved in the 2018 budget discussions.”

To prepare, he has been meeting with employees and residents at various events and is planning an informal “meet and greet” with the mayor and staff before

his official start.

“From what I’ve seen, the staff is very committed to providing great services to its residents,” he says. “I’m sure I’ll appreciate the commute to work and having an active role in the community.”

Township officials look forward to the expertise Tatarenko brings to Mt. Olive.

“Andrew was selected for a number of reasons, he had done the job successfully in another town, Waldwick (Bergen County), he had the right personality to be very successful in Mt. Olive, he also lives in town,” says Mt. Olive Twp. Mayor Rob Greenbaum. “There are many open projects which will need to be managed by Andrew.”

Greenbaum says township officials began looking for a new business administrator at the time that the former business administrator, Laura Harris, made the decision to resign and seek other employment. Harris had replaced Sean Canning, who held his appointment since Jan. 2012.

Harris’ reason for departure has not been shared.

“I was sorry and surprised

as well but unfortunately I can’t comment at this time,” said Harris in late June about her departure.

“You would have to ask Laura as to why she left,” was Greenbaum’s response.

“There were approximately 50 resumes received for the BA position, of which approximately 10 were interviewed,” says Greenbaum. “The offer was made by me to Andrew soon after his interview. The employment required council consent which was done at a recent meeting.”

To assist the business administrator, Claudia Tomasello was hired when Harris was on board to serve as the assistant business administrator.

“The town, as large as we are, number of employees, issues, requires a full time BA,” explains Greenbaum. “Claudia will remain on as assistant BA. She handles many day to day issues, resident issues, personnel issues and has been doing a fantastic job. The asst. BA position is something we have had in Mt. Olive for many years, although not recently.”

Exterior Renovations Competed At Local Historic Church, Final Interior Phase Begins

“The exterior is finished,” announces Kathy Murphy, vice president of the Mt. Olive Twp. Historical Society.

The exterior has been renovated to replicate the building’s exterior from 1870, painted to look like limestone block, says Murphy. Limestone block, a stone with stucco “was a decorative trend” at that time. The church’s exterior is now stone with stucco and lines that look like the limestone block.

The porch with its overhang was also removed as that had been added to the building in 1906.

“We were taking it back to 1870,” Murphy explains.

An ongoing project since 2007, the exterior renovations were completed within the last month.

“It was so weather dependent,” says Murphy. “It took a lot of work to get it all done.

Windows were all replaced, steeple has been renovated and front

porch was redone, she adds.

Renovating the interior is the next step in completing the church before it opens to the public.

Grants have been lined up for contractors to come in to provide utilities, fix floors and add a single-stall bathroom, says Murphy.

All of the contractors selected have been prescreened in the handling of historic buildings, specializing in heating, electric and a historic specialist on floors and beams.

“All the walls have to be prepared and painted up,” she says.

The tin ceiling put up in the 1890s will come down, she notes. Underneath is a “pretty rare” painted canvas, says Murphy. “We don’t know the full extent of damage” to that canvas. That fabric ceiling will come down to protect it and inspect it; another grant will be attained to either replace or restore the oneof-a kind canvas.

For the interior part of the project, Murphy says she hopes to have that all completed this next year.

“We don’t want to junk up the church with all that stuff,’ says Murphy.

Instead the town plans to open up the building for rented space such as for small weddings or gatherings, open houses, tours and a community church, says Murphy.

The church was built in 1855 and was utilized by a congregation that had been in existence since 1753. Its neighboring oneroom schoolhouse was built in 1837 and is also lined for renovations.

“The little school house is the next project,” says Murphy, that will be used as a museum in which the historical society will help operate.

Mt. Olive Twp.’s Building and Grounds has been cleaning up the cemetery to maintain the property.

“We don’t want branches coming down on the roof,” says Murphy, “so they’ve been trimmed and taken out and replaced with smaller trees. The stone wall also needs work.”

Improvement plans for the site include fixing the stone wall and painting the cemetery fence, finalized with some landscaping that may require some community volunteers, she says.

Township officials acquired the church in 2003 and it is one of two properties in town listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Efforts to attain grants to renovate the building began in 2007, according to Murphy.

In the end, completed renovations will be hundreds of thousands of dollars, with 80 percent paid by grants provided by Morris County Preservation Trust.

Married couple Mary Lalama and Joe Nicastro of Flanders, co-publishers of New View Media Group Newspapers, plan to host a Thanksgiving Family Dinner for struggling families or individuals, as well as the elderly who would otherwise be alone on the holiday. The festive meal is set for Thanksgiving Day, Thur., Nov. 23, at 1:30 p.m., at the Mt. Olive Senior Center in Flanders.

This second annual dinner is free to any resident of Mt. Olive and surrounding areas who is in need of assistance or would otherwise be spending Thanksgiving by themselves.

“A traditional Thanksgiving dinner from turkey to pumpkin pie,” will be served that day, describes Lalama, who is currently in the process of seeking sponsoring restaurants, as well as donors and volunteers.

“We are asking area restaurants to help us cook the food,” she says. They are also asking anyone who wants to donate food or money to buy food, as well as soliciting businesses.

Other festivities beside the dinner will include some games for the children.

Lalama says they chose to host this dinner on Thanksgiving rather on another holiday for two reasons.

“It’s a national holiday so everyone celebrates it and it’s a time for us to give back to help those who need help and for us to be thankful for all we have been blessed with,” she explains. “We are trying to serve as many needy families as possible. If we get a lot of people we will have two seatings.”

Lalama says, “We came up with the idea two years ago with all our kids. We were saying that we had so much food and that it would be nice to host a Thanksgiving dinner where less fortunate families can come and eat and feel like they are part of a bigger family and have an experience of dining out for the holiday.”

To help get the word out about the dinner, Lalama has been contacting different groups in town.

“I did reach out to the food pantry in town and am bringing fliers there,” she says.

“I am also going to call some area churches, schools and daycare centers to let them know as well.”

Donated Care-Item Filled Handbags Carry To Female Hurricane Victims In Houston, And Local Women

By Cheryl Conway isa Smith Wagner’s home in the Hackettstown section of Mt. Olive is filling up with handbags for homeless women living on the streets or in shelters.

Her non-profit 501©3 organization, Helping Hearts & Handbags, Inc., recently shipped out 25 gently used purses filled with personal care items to a homeless shelter in Houston, Texas, in an effort to provide some relief following Hurricane Harvey. A box was sent to Star of Hope Family Center in Houston on Thur., Sept. 7, after her board members gathered at her house the day before to help fill the purses with the needed items.

Established in March 2016, Wagner’s mission is for women to help other women. Her target has been to help the women in Morris and Warren counties who are either living on the streets or in shelters. One of her board members had suggested stretching their giving southwest after the disastrous hurricane ripped

through Texas.

“I love the idea of women helping women,” says Wagner, founder and president of HH&H, “especially with the purses. “We have so much, we are so blessed with what we have.”

Wagner says, “I had 20 purses I wasn’t using. I feel we can help the women. Women are helping families.”

Registered as a non-profit last year, Wagner says she began collecting personal care items several years back as a hobby while traveling.

“I traveled a lot for my job,” says Wagner, a mother of two adult sons who recently retired from sales and marketing at Sunrise Senior Living. “I used to collect all the toiletries from the hotels.”

Then developed her idea to sort the items, put them in bags and donate to the homeless women. She got her book club involved at first and her effort grew.

Gazebo, Bench And Carved Stones Fill The Memory Garden To Remember Young Lives

That has been the result at the Nick Novaky Memory Garden at Turkey Brook Park in Budd Lake.

Established in June 2014, the garden was created by Dr. Denise D’Amico Novaky of Hackettstown to memorialize her 18year old son Nicholas Novaky, a Mt. Olive High School senior who died in a car accident two years prior. The memorial is dedicated to all Mt. Olive residents who lost their lives before the age of 30.

Novaky attended a Mt. Olive Twp. Council meeting in August to update township officials on the growth of the garden and ask permission to add a gazebo to the site.

“Because the administration has been so generous with space for the memorial garden, I like to go to the council every few years to give them an update,” says Novaky. “This year a fami-

ly came forward to me to put a gazebo in. They [officials] put me through the process and walked me through it.”

The Quinn family of Hackettstown is donating a gazebo to the garden to honor their 20year old daughter, Bridget Quinn, a Mt. Olive High School graduate who died June 8 from an accidental gunshot wound while vacationing in Cape Coral, Fla. Waiting on some permits, Novaky hopes the gazebo is in this fall.

To Novaky’s surprise, Mt. Olive Police Chief Stephen Beecher and Captain Michael Spitzer who were sitting in the back during her presentation, contacted her and offered to donate a bench to her garden.

“They wrote me and were very supportive of the garden and foundation efforts,” says Novaky. The police offered to pay for a bench and plaque at the garden to honor local family physician Dr. David Rygielski, who

continued from page 14 Solanki, 19, were killed on June 19, 2012, in a car accident after the car he was driving smashed into a tree at the property of Fellowship Church on Wolfe Rd. in Budd Lake.

To commemorate their death, a roadside memorial with memorabilia and mementos had been set up around a large tree where the accident occurred. When the property owner was looking to sell his property, the roadside memorial was dismantled.

Novaky had then requested and received permission by the council to establish a memorial site at Turkey Brook Park, at the top of the loop, by the dog park.

Its purpose is to serve as “a place for family and friends to meet together, express grief, find solace, and take time to meditate” to remember all young Mt. Olive residents who lost their lives.

“Mayor Greenbaum and the council made that possible for us and I’m very grateful,” says Novaky.

tion by Hudson County Assemblyman Nicholas Chiaravalloti regarding the distraction of roadside memorials, Novaky wrote to him to inform him of what Mt. Olive is doing with the memory garden.

“Mt. Olive has been in the forefront in doing something to help parents who are grieving, work through their grief in a therapeutic way….peaceful way,” she says. “It should be a model for the state.”

In her garden, some plants were donated and others were planted such as daffodil bulbs, hyacinths bulbs, peonies, three lilac bushes, small perennial flowers, Basswood trees, a milkweed garden for monarchs to lay their eggs and is expecting some hibiscus and hydrangeas.

Also featured at the garden are rocks with names of each person who died too soon.

Novaky, who works as a psychologist in Hackettstown, carves the name with a dremel onto polished river stones and places them in the garden.

“I love doing that,” says Novaky. “It’s really fun.”

To date, she says there are a few hundred stones displayed at the garden. Novaky researched the names of all individuals who died prior to their 30th birthday from Mt. Olive and placed a stone at the garden to memorialize them.

There are at least 100 stones now at the garden from the 1970s to present day, and then at least another 100 more that died between 1850 to the 1960s.

She notes that she has “been inundated with so many” names of victims under the age of 30 who died from heroin overdose.

Novaky set up a websitewww.become-awesome.org that lists the names and biographies of those individuals from Mt. Olive who died before age 30 from the 1970’s to current day.

If anyone knows of an individual not listed on the site, contact Novaky through her website.

“I’ve been looking for death certificates but miss people,” says Novaky, who decided to use

her research of newspaper articles and online sources to compile a book.

The biographies of these young lives lost can now be read in Novaky’s book, “Take My Voice,” with the second edition just published four months ago.

In her book, Novaky also shares the history of Mt. Olive, founding families, life during the Civil War and even the Mt. Olive Baseball League from the 1920’s.

“When I got involved memorializing everyone in the garden, that led me to who was here before that,” says Novaky. “Once I got rolling, I was kinda rolling.

Everyone deserves to be remembered. It’s important to know who had an impact in our town; it didn’t happen overnight.” Novaky is giving away copies of her book for free but anyone is welcome to make a donation to The Become Awesome Foundation, a non-profit regulated through Charity Smith.

Most of their collections have taken place at Donation Stations by her family and friends.

“We’ve gone into the city and given out purses,” says Wagner, but the main target is those women living locally.

“I’ve given out 50 so far,” she says, and then 25 more to Houston.

Her goal is to give out another 75 purses by November.

Wagner’s hair salon, Lynn’s Personal Image Salon in Hackettstown held a collection two months ago.

“Anytime I ask anyone, I get purses,” says Wagner.

Her company’s bank, First Hope Bank on Route 46 west in Mt. Olive, and its other three locations in Warren County and two in Essex County, started a HH&H’s Donation Station drive

Sept. 12. The six branches plan to continue the drive for three to four weeks.

Patrons are asked to donate gently used large handbags and personal care items on the suggested item list.

Items being collected include travel size soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, tissue packs, wrapped sanitary pads, wipes and hand sanitizer, fun socks, gloves, bottled water, instant coffee, hot chocolate, tea bags and oatmeal packets.

“We made a top ten list,” says Wagner. “Most homeless don’t have sanitary pads. That is so undignified.”

Inside each purse, HH&H handwrites an inspiration message on a notecard that reads “Love from the women at Helping Hearts & Handbags.”

Accepted are gently used handbags.

“Every penny gets funneled back into the community,” she says, and is used to keep the garden going.

“It’s a pretty big space; 30 ft. by 40 ft., it’s big,” says Novaky.

Once a year she hires a professional landscaper to mulch and weed the property.”

While there is no running water at the site, Novaky says the town has placed a water buffalo, or mobile water tank with a motorized sprayer, at the far side of the garden so Novaky can keep her plants moist.

Monies raised through the foundation, either from donations or fundraisers, cover the expenses for planting, mulching, weeding as well as the annual scholarship, the Soaring Hawk Award, a cash award given to graduating seniors to offset expenses for college, trade school or small business ownership.

So far five $100 cash awards have been given to one recipi-

ent annually selected by a blind selection process by a committee made up of Novaky’s family, friends and MOHS alumnus. Applications are available at MOHS and recipients are chosen “based upon an individual’s ability to make an impact in the community,” says Novaky.

“Anybody who wants to dig a hole for planting can get in touch with me through the website,” says Novaky.

“It’s a labor of love,” she says about the memory garden. “I feel useful being a support for other parents who’ve lost their children.”

Finally being able to have a garden is also a perk.

“I grew up in Mt. Olive and lived in the woods and couldn’t have a garden,” says Novaky. “I live in the woods now and can’t have a garden. I’m actually able to plant flowers that require sun.

It’s therapeutic work for me and I adore it.”

Her visits with homeless women have been heartfelt.

“They’ll sit down with me and take out all their things; they’re just so happy,” describes Wagner.

Backpacks maybe the way to go in the future, Wagner says.

“This is all brand new, we are tweaking as we go along.”

Wagner hopes to start some

fundraising to offset her costs such as a wine and cheese come January.

“I started the business; I paid for everything up front,” she says. “I put in $1,500 to be incorporated to start off with supplies and marketing.”

Besides financial contributions, Wagner is looking for some warehouse space to store all of the donated handbags and personal care items.

Before there were sent out, Wagner says “I have over 150 purses in my basement; so much for the pool table.”

Eventually, her ultimate goal is to start chapters of HH&H everywhere with some of her immediate interests to expand to Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia, Pa., and northern Virginia.

Ribbon-Cutting Opens Football Field

ount Olive High School celebrated the completion of upgrades to its football field facilities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, held before the team’s September 8 game against Morris Knolls. Liz Ouimet, Mount Olive Board of Education president, and Dr. Larrie Reynolds, superintendent of schools, cut the ribbon as they stood at the 50-yard line among a gathering of board members,

administrators, and representatives from the district’s architectural firm.

The new facilities include covered bleachers, a new concession stand, and new restrooms. The improvements will not increase taxes since the construction project was paid for using existing money in the district’s capital reserve fund.

Local Church Youth Help, Bond With Alaskans On Summer Mission

By Elsie Walker s school started this S e p t e m b e r, one of the common questions asked of returning students was, “How did you spend your summer vacation?”

While many students may have shared stories of relaxing on a beach, or sight-seeing at an exotic locale, 16-year-old Hannah Ferguson and her friends had stories to tell of a trip that included hard, but rewarding work in Alaska.

Ferguson, who attends Morris Hills High School, and 38 other young people, aged 14 to 19, from Grace Church in Netcong, spent 10

days in July in Alaska with six chaperones.

There, they helped with everything from recycling to better the distressed environment, to

putting up siding for an organization that helps people buy affordable homes.

Some projects got the youth closer to the locals, such

as one helping a former pastor, who was in his 70s and diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, take down dead trees on his prop-

erty, and helping a cancer patient do some roofing and interior repairs to his home.

Summer Mission... continued from page 22 of student ministries, who is originally from Alaska and had spent a good part of his life there. Scheeringa noted that he has talked about Alaska to the youth quite a bit, sharing that, while it is a place of beauty, it had its problems, such as a high drug abuse rate and low graduation rates.

Having heard him talk so much about it, the church youth wanted to see it. Through an organization called, GROUP, they learned of mission projects there that needed volunteers. However, first, each one had to raise the money to pay for his or her trip. The cost was $2,100 each.

“I babysat and worked fundraisers at my church, and I sent letters to my friends and family,” said Vanessa Franco, 16, who attends Morris Hills High School.

Ferguson noted the generosity of church members, which helped make her trip come true.

“I raised my money for Alaska a few ways,” she says. “The most helpful was definitely the anonymous sponsorship for my plane ride; a member from Grace donated $800 toward my trip. Every student was able to receive a sponsorship, and I think it really goes to show the passionate attitude many people have toward missions. Besides this, I sent out letters to my friends and family members asking for both their prayers and monetary donations. I was so

thankful and surprised at how generous their donations were. “ Once on their trip, Scheeringa said there were surprises in store.

“We arrived in Anchorage around 7 p.m. to lots of light, a beautiful landscape, and a cozy 70 degrees,’’ he said. “We ate some Alaskan Taco Bell, and went to bed. The next afternoon we headed out to Work Camp in Big Lake, Alaska. We settled into our cabins, attended orientation, and then had the rest of the evening to recoup from our long journey. The kids were amazed as the sun still was not even close to setting at our 11 p.m. bedtime. We had to cover our windows in order to sleep well.”

Scheeringa said the youth from the church never go on a mission trip without working until they are exhausted. They give it their all, he said, and this trip was no exception. The youth were divided into teams and sent out on the various projects.

“My team was assigned a construction site where I tried lots of new things, like working a power saw, taking nails out of an old shed, painting the shed, mowing the lawn with a driving lawn mower, roofing, throwing a busted up concrete patio into an elevated dump truck, and electric work,’’ said Ferguson. “The most challenging was definitely the electrical work,”

she said. “While the wiring was not very difficult, installing new paneled lights was quite a hassle and usually involved more maneuvering skill and strength than knowledge of circuits; one wrong move and you could drop a panel on your head. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it very much.”

Meanwhile, Cecilia Lederer, 17, who attends Pope John XXIII, was on a team doing yardwork.

“I really enjoyed my project working at a retired pastor’s house,” she said. “We were able to clean up his property with extensive yard work, like tree removal and trimming.

Without our help, the couple would not be able to have a more open yard and driveway, which is essential during snowy Alaskan winters. It was such an honor to serve a man of God and his wife.”

Jarod Rodland, 18, attends Lenape Valley High School. His project let him see the Alaskan landscape.

“I was cleaning the trash out of the woods,’’ he said. “I liked it because I got to help out the local environment and wildlife from litter.”

Franco said her favorite project was painting a shed at her worksite because she got to work with a man from a local church there who made them feel at home. Also, Franco said that, while her group did quite a bit of work, she learned a good deal from it, too: “We painted.

We tore up carpet. We did yard work. We used a jackhammer to break up concrete, and we even learned how to do electrical work and installed fluorescent lights. Installing the light was the most challenging because it was difficult and new, but it was fun to learn how.”

Scheeringa said the kids also had some bonding time with each other and the Alaska residents they were able to help.

“The most rewarding part of the whole trip was when my crew and a resident prayed together before his surgery the next day,’’ said Lederer. “It was one of the most beautiful things I ever witnessed because our resident was so strong in his faith.

It was evident that he knew the Holy Spirit would watch over him and was not afraid of letting God’s will be done. I think about that moment often because it was probably the most memorable part of my trip, along with becoming such good friends with my youth group.”

Not only did the youth learn, bond, and grow, but they also improved the image of their home state.

After a youth group crew had busted and disposed more than six thousand pounds of concrete, an elderly Alaskan man inquired about the team’s home state. When told they were from New Jersey, he was impressed, and said: “Hmm, I need to rethink what I think, about people from Jersey.’’

Pink Extensions Fundraiser For Breast Cancer Cure Kicks Off At Alfonso’s Salon

In large skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add onion, garlic and mushrooms, and cook, stirring frequently, 10 minutes, or until onions are soft.

Reserve.

Mount Olive Schools See Program Improvements, Building Upgrades

W

hen Mt. Olive students returned to school Sept. 5, they were greeted by new and improved courses, and a host of building upgrades.

Improvements to the district’s educational program have been made at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Many of the curricular improvements continue the district’s emphasis on broadening the technology skills of students, according to Dr. Larrie Reynolds, superintendent of schools.

New equipment was installed in Mt. Olive High School’s maker space, which allows students to design and create products and components using 3D printers. A new tank was also put into place for Marine Advanced Technology Education, a program which began last year and guides students through the design and construction of underwater robots.

At Mt. Olive Middle School, students will have an opportuni-

ty to immerse themselves in cutting-edge technology through new and improved STEM courses that take advantage of a new maker space/STEM lab. Located in the former wood workshop, the lab features a virtual reality area that allows students to work with VR using new Oculus Rifts.

Elementary students will also have an opportunity to go hands-on with science and technology. A hands-on laboratory science program will be initiated in all elementary schools this fall.

Science kits and materials have been purchased that complement the newly-written science curriculum, allowing kids to learn by exploring, inventing and discovering.

“We’re continuing to press our mission to get kids thinking and take more control over their own learning,” said Reynolds.

In addition to the technology offerings, an Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program has been created at the high school. Sponsored by the United States Air Force, JROTC develops leadership, self-confidence, self-discipline, and character, and teaches military history and customs. Physical fitness training and drill instruction is an important part of the program as well. The program, open to students in grades 9-12, will be taught by Chief Master Sgt. Robert Bedell, who recently retired after 29 years of service.

In his past post, Bedell served as the command chief for the 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg Air Force Base, the nation’s West Coast space hub.

Several renovation and improvement projects were completed during the summer. While much of the work focused on MOHS, improvements were made to every school in the district. Eight classrooms at the high school were renovated in the third-floor tower section.

New lighting, ceiling, and flooring were installed. The school’s football field was renovated with new bleachers, outdoor restrooms, concession stand, lighting and turf.

Plans were put into place to cover the soccer/lacrosse field

at the high school with an air dome, beginning in December.

The new structure will allow students to use the field during physical education classes in the winter months and will also be available for rent by community organizations. A new speaker line array system and sound board were installed in the high school performing arts center to improve the audio experience of concerts and presentations.

A new auxiliary gym was constructed over the summer. The facility will be used for physical education classes and also house numerous student activities, from wrestling to JROTC drills.

The library/media center at Mountain View Elementary School was completely renovated. The library features an open design and easier access to technology. A new HVAC unit was also installed. New boilers were installed at MOMS and Tinc Road Elementary School. New parking lots/bus loops were put into place at the middle school and Tinc Road, and parking lot re-pavement was completed at the four other district schools.

Additionally, the office area of Sandshore Elementary School was modernized to improve and maximize space, and four new 54-passenger school buses were purchased to replace aging busses.

Flanders Church Plans ‘Applefest’ For All

he United Presbyterian Church is planning its annual family fun event, “Applefest,” Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Flanders church grounds.

The event is free and open to the public. This year, there will be music from Shane Zen, a Mt Olive-born musician who performs regularly in New York City.

Food will be available for purchase, including hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and apple related deserts. There will be a bake sale, as well.

RH Farms will offer beautiful fruits and vegetables for pur-

chase.

A bounce house is among the many games and activities that will be available to children.

Also, arts and crafts for the young kids, especially sand art, are always a huge draw.

A silent auction will be held throughout the event. There will also be many vendors selling skin care, jewelry, home goods, and, everyone’s favorite, 31

bags! Rizzo’s Wildlife World will be there for a special presentation at 3 p.m.

Mt. Olive Area Chamber Plans Executive Roundtable

hree regional executives will take center stage for the Third Annual Executive Roundtable, presented by the Mt. Olive Area Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s event, an after-hours Lunch ‘N Learn, takes place on Tues. Sept. 26 at Bea McNally’s in Hackettstown.

utumn means different things to many people.

Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage.

Although New England may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves.

The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. The Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York, Amish Country in Pennsylvania, the Great Lakes from Michigan to Ohio, and many other areas can be great places to witness nature at its most colorful. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind.

• Get off the highway. To see

• Avoid tourist-heavy areas.

hen it comes to storms and hurricanes, you can never be too prepared.

To keep your family safe, it’s important to prepare for the worst because once a hurricane or storm hits, action must be taken quickly.

Five Ways To Get Acquainted With A New Neighborhood

According to a survey by DuProprio, a Quebec-based real estate advice site, 28 percent of Canadians feel the need to move every five years. Surprisingly, DuProprio also found that 14 percent of owners wish they could move every year.

The main reasons people move are expansion of the family, a career change, retirement, empty nest situations, or when moving is more practical than large-scale home renovations.

While some people stick close to previous home locations, a 2015 American Community Survey found approximately 16.9 million people moved to a different county in 2015.

Whether a move is across county lines or overseas, it can take some time to acclimate to a new neighborhood. These tips can help anyone get acquaint-

ed with their new surroundings and make friends in the process.

1. Host a housewarming party. Get to know immediate neighbors by hosting a party.

After some unpacking is done, host a simple get-together for people who live nearby. Ask if neighbors can help out by bringing chairs. Offer light refreshments and some type of activities for children. The event doesn’t have to be extensive, just long enough to engage in some conversation and introduce yourself.

2. Walk and drive around.

Scout out the area by driving around and making note of shopping centers, parks and places of interest. Schedule times when you will get out of the car and walk around on foot, which makes it easier to take everything in. Use a website like Walkscore.com to find places within walking distance of your new home. Bring the dog along.

Dogs can be great ice breakers with new neighbors.

3. Check out community blotters. Community events may be posted in print and distribut-

ed through a local newspaper and also on municipal websites.

Find out where the locals go on weekends or during the week.

Communities may take pride in certain activities. It’s easier to get a feel for the neighborhood by spending time with the locals.

4. Become active in the community. Find a volunteer organization or join a local house of worship. Check with the local chamber of commerce for ways

to get involved or clubs to join.

Like-minded people can make living in a new locale more enjoyable.

5. Dine out once a week. If budget allows, try a new neighborhood eating establishment each week to get a lay of the land. You’ll identify hot spots and hidden gems and will also be able to mingle with the community. An app such as Open Table can help you find places to eat nearby.

Whippany Railway Museum To Hold Pumpkin Festival, Wellness Event

elebrate the wonders of the fall season during the Whippany Railway Museum’s 17th Annual Pumpkin Festival on Sun., Oct. 1.

This year, in addition to the activities at the museum, the Pumpkinliner excursion train will bring visitors to- All Aboard for Wellness, Fitness, and Fun!- an event co-hosted by Hanover Township’s Mayor’s Wellness Program and community neighbors Bayer, the New York Red Bulls, Wegmans and the Whippanong Library.

The Pumpkin Festival takes place from noon to 5:30 p.m., giving visitors the opportunity to walk among the pumpkins, corn shocks and grinning scarecrows. Enjoy the wares of local craft merchants and railroad memorabilia dealers at the Pumpkin Market Place Crafts Fair. The zombies will be happy to pose for photos with the kids. Morris’ Rich History To Unfold In Fall Programs

he Morris County Tourism Bureau is inviting the public to experience the rich history of Morris County during several fall historical programs planned this season.

“Betsy Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton: A Match Made in Morristown,” will be offered twice in October.

During the Revolutionary War, a young and dashing Alexander Hamilton, General George Washington’s aide-de-camp at the Ford Mansion, spent the winter and spring in Morristown while his future wife, Betsy Schuyler, was nearby at the home of the Campfields. Hear the romantic tale of their courtship from members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the conservators of the c. 1760 Schuyler-Hamilton House.

On Saturdays, Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 at 10 a.m., at the Schuyler-Hamilton House in Morristown, tours will be conducted.

The size is limited to 30 and the cost is $15. There is limited park-

ing on Olyphant Place, which is off Morris Avenue, between Elm and Ridgedale. Parking is also available at the Morristown Train Station, Lackawanna Place.

“Ghostly Revelations at the Ford Mansion,’’ will be held on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m.

The Ford Mansion underwent a paranormal study by Gordon Ward, a well-respected investigator of ghosts and hauntings and an author on the topic. This program will include photos, audio recordings, developing theories, and information collected from his study of the Ford Mansion, General George Washington’s home for 200 days in 1780, and the Ford family’s home for three generations.

Audience members will have a chance to share their ghost stories with Ward and perhaps get some answers, just in time for Halloween, on their own personal haunting experiences.

Participants should in the auditorium of the Washington’s Headquarters Museum at 10

a.m. The cost is $15 per person.
