The police officers can get out from their often isolated jobs, to collaborate and enjoy the community that they serve.

According to Police Chief Stephen Beecher, he enthuses that, “this program bridges the gap between the public and police officers.” He states that it is a wonderful thing that will encourage positivity and communication.

“It is easier to talk to police if you know them,” he states. “If you have a face to a name, you can make people feel more

comfortable versus if you are talking to a stranger.”

Beecher assures, with this program, “there will be no agendas or speeches. This is only an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the officers in Mt. Olive.”

This is the second time that Mt. Olive is participating in the Coffee with a Cop Program. At the last meeting, they met in the Budd Lake Diner and had a small turnout. Beecher hopes that this year’s turnout will be even better.

Beecher says that this event is a great opportunity to “get out and meet the people. Any time we can

commune with the people we serve, we would like to do that.”

Beecher credits Officer Lonnie Elbaum as the person who brought the Coffee with a Cop program to his attention and it was quickly implemented.

Elbaum is very enthusiastic about this event and hopes that it will “bring the community and officers together in a relaxed environment where they can break down barriers and see the police as human beings, not just part of an experience that is unpleasant.”

public, chat and want people to know that “we (police) are just like you.”

As Elbaum tells it, he enjoys getting out and “getting to know each other [the people in the community] better.” Whether it is talking about their respective families, or interests, the goal is to communicate. He shares a friendly memory of meeting a man who had been a Mt. Olive resident for 25 years at the last Coffee with a Cop event. He shares that they were just sitting drinking coffee, and talking about how times have changed.

According to Elbaum, they had a great time just chatting about topics such as the changing policing, technology, equipment from what the man had experienced in

his 25 years. “It was fun,” Elbaum says.

According to both Elbaum and Beecher, they like to have the event take place every quarter at different locations to further meet the public in different settings. The next event was set to be held at Sam’s Club on March 6.

The Coffee with A Cop Program is a national initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office Community Policing Services. The program itself originated in 2001 in Hawthorne, Calif., when the members of the Hawthone Police Department were searching for a more successful way to interact with their citizens, they wanted to better understand the needs and concerns of

their community residents.

The program has caught on like wildfire. In less than five years, the Coffee with a Cop Program has skyrocketed all over the globe.

Various Coffee with a Cop events have been hosted in all 50 states of the U.S. as well as Canada, Europe, Australia and Africa.

The key to the growing success of this program is that it opens the door for law enforcement and community members to engage together, just doing something nice. The mission of this program is to “break down barriers between police officers and the citizens they serve.”

Spruce Up Mt. Olive With New Logo - Public Contest Underway

dorned throughout the township on buildings, municipal vehicles, uniforms and even residents’ garbage and recycling cans, a logo designed 46 years ago is up for some freshening.

With spring almost here, no time like the present to spruce up the township’s identify with a new logo.

The Mt. Olive Township Logo Art Contest 2017 invites submissions from the public to design a new logo to represent the township of Mt. Olive.

A $500 prize will be of-

fered by the township Pride Committee to the creator of the winning design.

The original logo was designed in 1971 by George Dakis Jr., a seventh grade at the Mt. Olive Middle School at the time, for Mt. Olive’s Centennial. While creative, yet simple, with its use of an ‘m’ overlapping a ‘t,’ township officials decided that a new logo could bring new awareness.

“There is nothing wrong with the current logo, with the exception that people look at it and don't know what it means,” explains Mt. Olive Twp. May-

or Rob Greenbaum. “We thought something fresher and more representative of the town might be a good change. I would like to see a logo which highlights the natural beauty or historic nature of the town.”

The idea for the 2017 logo contest was brought on by township employee Claudia Tomasello, the new assistant business administrator. She presented her idea to the mayor and council on Feb. 14.

“I had so many people come up to me and ask what it is,” she explains, especially those who vis-

“People should not have to ask what it is. People look at it and don’t know what it is. If you are trying to sell your town and promote it, people shouldn’t have to go and ask what the logo

means and what’s in it. It should be visible and interesting.”

Mt. Olive Twp. Council President Joe Nicastro says “it was time to update and give a modern look and feel,” to the township’s logo. “It creates an identity and awareness for the township. People get familiar with a logo and associate with the township.”

Agreeing, Greenbaum says “the logo identifies the town, creates pride and community unity.” Most towns do have their own logo. Originally we thought that getting the high school students involved in designing a new logo would be good for community pride.”

To continue with the tradition of a student designed logo, “we wanted

to see what the kids could come up with.” But after looking at the full picture, “the council decided to open it up to all individuals and businesses. I'm excited to see what the community comes up with.”

Officials are looking for a new logo that will represent the township of Mt. Olive.

“Any creative ideas,” says Tomasello, that can include the town’s history, landmarks, historical cites.

It will make Mt. Olive shine; it makes our town stand out.”

Replacing the logo will take some time to swap out, officials add.

“There is no cost estimate at this time,” says Greenbaum. “It would likely be a phased in exercise.

buildings is decals “which are done in house,” says Tomasello. “It’s not a major thing. It can take years to get them swapped over.

There’s no rush.”

Entries must be received by the Mt. Olive Township Administration Office, 204 Flanders Drakestown Rd., Budd Lake, NJ 07828 no later than Mon. May 1; The winner will be announced on Mon., May 15, through the mayor’s Facebook page.

Area Cross Walk Continues A Decade’s Old Faith Tradition

By Elsie Walker enturies ago, a man was crucified at a place called Golgatha. He was nailed to a cross and left to hang there.

The location of the crucifixion was a public place which many people passed through. That man was Jesus Christ who Christians believe is the savior and died for their sins. For Christians, that day of the crucifixion is known as Good Friday and remembered in a number of ways.

Besides services at each of their churches, houses of worship in the Netcong -Stanhope area follow a tradition they have had for decades: a Cross Walk. At a Cross Walk, a volunteer carrying a cross leads walkers as they go to various stops. The Netcong-Stan-

hope Cross Walk will start at 11a.m. on April 14 at the First Presbyterian Church of Stanhope in Stanhope.

The walk will include five stops with parts of the crucifixion story and a prayer read at each one, ending at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Netcong.

The walk takes about an hour and walkers can join or leave it at any place along the way. It is held rain or shine. Those driving to the walk, may park their cars in the lot of any of the participating churches.

“The Cross Walk is a sincere and dedicated effort to take time to remember Jesus’ story, together,” said Rev. Hugh Matlack, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Once they leave the Presbyterian Church,

walkers go down Main Street toward Netcong.

The next stop is out in the open, near the driveway to Bell’s Mansion.

“The outside stop where cars and people are going by reminds us of the busy place where the crucifixion took place. It was a public place; also, it is a reminder that Jesus died not only for those in the church, but for all the world. Just as the sun shines on all the trees and flowers as if each were the only one on earth, so does God care for all people in a special manner,” shared Pastor Nick Petrov of the Port Morris United Methodist Church in Landing, who will speak at that outside stop.

in Netcong. As the walk progresses, people come and go and some watch from store fronts or homes.

The last two years, the number of walkers has ranged from 61 to over 89 with the weather affecting the number.

“I love that the Cross Walk is ecumenical,” said Pastor Lynn Zaremba of the Stanhope United Methodist Church. “I feel it gives all those who walk, as well as passersby, the opportunity to become united in Christ.

Having the followers come to Stanhope United Methodist Church and each stop, reminds us that we are all God’s children. No matter where we come from or what denomination our faith is, we worship God as a family. Sharing the crucifixion story together

allows us to be a community of believers, forgiven and loved through our Lord and Savior.”

From the Methodist church, the walkers will go to the next stop, another outdoor location: outside the Netcong train station.

Much like the setting of the crucifixion, the stop is a public place, but in this modern age with the sound of cars passing by in the background.

It is the story of a Polish Priest during World War II: “St. Maximillian Kolbe offered his life in place of a married man in Nazi Germany. It was February 1941, Auschwitz, Poland.

Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan priest put in a death camp for helping Jews escape Nazi terrorism. One of his fellow prisoners escaped from the camp. The camp rule was enforced. Ten people would be rounded up randomly and herded into a cell where they would die of starvation and a final exposure to lethal gas, as

a lesson against future escape attempts. Names were called. A Polish Jew Frandishek Gasovnachek was called. He cried, ‘Please spare me, I have a wife and children!’ Kolbe stepped forward and said, ‘I will take his place.’ Kolbe was marched into the starvation cell with nine others where he managed to live until August 14.

This story was chronicled on a NBC news special several years ago. Gasovnachek, by this time 82, was shown telling this story while tears streamed down his cheeks. A mobile camera followed him around his little white house to a marble monument carefully tended with flowers. The inscription read: “In Memory Of Maximilian Kolbe He Died In My Place.”

Every day since 1941,

Gasovnachek lived with the knowledge, ‘I live because someone died for me.’ Every year on August 14 he travels to Auschwitz in memory of Kolbe. We gather in St. Michael’s [on Good Friday] to see that powerful expression of love in the cross, where we can say ‘I live because someone died for me.’

New Agency Provides Services To Students

new agency Buds to Blossoms Family Enrichment Center serving families and children with social/ emotional and developmental disabilities has opened in Long Valley.

The main goal is to help bridge the gap in services which are available. There are many programs for students who are in transition or 21 and older but few services for youth in the community.

“It is my belief that services should start earlier and should last throughout development,” states the Pamela Hamilton the owner and operator of Buds to Blossoms Family Enrichment Center. Fam-

ily/Individual and group counseling are available to help with family conflict, acceptance, self-esteem, depression, anxiety and behaviors.

Social programs are designed to empower each individual, teach life skills through activities, develop peer relationships and strengthen families. Some of the programs available are: enhanced after school program for youth who have trouble fitting in; Saturday group for youth and teens who will benefit from learning life and social skills in the office and out in the community; sibling group-for kids growing up with a sibling with special needs; teen night to

give teens a healthy place to go and socialize as well as getting out in the community; and Day transition program-for the misplaced 18 and up population. This program gives a safe place to go during the day at the same time to learn life skills and about the next step in life .

Many “tweens” who feel like they are just not fitting in or anxious about middle school have begun individual counseling and have joined one of the social groups. Families do not need to be alone.

Children are developing younger which brings everyday life issues earlier.

Acorn Hall Exhibit Pays Tribute To Morris County WWI Contributions

By J.L. Shively new exhibit featured throughout Acorn Hall opened on Sun., Feb. 19 in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the United States entry into World War I which took place on April 6, 1917.

The exhibit is entitled “1917: World War, Women’s Rights, and Weaponry Sciences,” and will be on display at the Morris County Historical Society’s Headquarters, the historic Acorn Hall until June.

“We wanted to incorporate as many aspects of what was going on in 1917 as possible,” said Nicole Rizzuto, curator of Exhibits and Research with MCHS.

Oh What Fun It Is To Sled

he Scouts from Troop 156 of Flanders competed in the annual Black River District Klondike Derby at Camp Trexler in Polk, Pa., earlier this winter. The

Along with other period appropriate clothing the exhibit features artifacts from WWI throughout every room of Acorn Hall.

A WWI uniform is on display including camp material on loan from the Butler Museum and Historical Committee. A pop tent is featured along with a medical bag from the MCHS collection.

The idea behind the exhibit with a mixture of war artifacts intermixed with everyday items is meant to show “how different things affected different aspects of people’s lives,” states Rizzuto.

To showcase Morris County’s contribution

to the war effort when it came to weaponry Acorn Hall has dedicated space to Hudson Maxim, who worked on smokeless gunpowder and other technology advances the country needed to win WWI. There is also a photo of Dr. Guy Otis Brewster, whose Brewster-Heller Armor was a first attempt at making bullet proof vests.

“I’m really excited about it [the exhibit],” states Rizzuto, who has done extensive research on these subjects. She goes on to explain that this exhibit, “shows how much Morris County impacted the rest of the world.”

Rizzuto explains how easy it is for locals to forget just how much local history can impact the world.

The exhibit can be viewed while Acorn Hall is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours of eight or more can be arranged by reservation.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors $3 for students and free for children under the age of 12 and for MCHS members.

CMS Students Getting Benched To Socially Connect

By Cheryl Conway ith school such a busy placewhether students are switching classes and subjects, grabbing a quick lunch or running around at recess- taking a breather is not the norm.

At Chester M. Stephen’s Elementary School in Budd Lake, there may now be some time to sit down and reflect or make a new friend. Three new benches recently constructed and donated by a local Boy Scout troop and painted by Gifted and Talented students were unveiled at a special assembly at CMS gymnasium on Wed., March 8, at 2 p.m., with all students.

Placed at three different areas at the schools where students have recess, the buddy benches will be open for any students to take a break and make a new social connection.

“Its purpose is to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground,” explains second grade teacher Ann M. Scotland, member of the CMS Rainbow Connection Committee, a group that works to promote kindness among

students.

“A rainbow connection is using our skills and talents to offer simple acts of kindness to others,” explains Scotland. “When adding such character to our lessons, students will be able to bring so much hope and promise into not only their future but the future of others as well.”

The new buddy benches will act as a tool to promote kindness and friendship at CMS. “Anything that connects one student to another in a positive light is something worth trying,” says Scotland. “Some students are shy or the opposite they have a huge personality that they are willing to share; this bench offers a means to unite.”

The idea for the buddy benches was brought on by Journie Cifelli, CMS reading specialist.

“She had heard about other schools that use such a bench,” says Scotland.

“The committee loved the idea and together we found a way to make it happen.

The three benches, which are made out of lumber, were constructed by

Boy Scout Troop 249 with plans that began last fall, says Scotland.

“The Boy Scouts took a few months to make the benches,” she says. “The benches then had to be approved by our board of education. Once we had the approval, our Gifted and Talented Art students painted the benches under the leadership of Mrs. Denise Palmisano.”

Gary Pepe, CMS lead custodian, “also guided us with the type of varnish needed for outdoor display. Our teachers on the Rainbow Connection Committee did the prep work before the benches were painted by students.”

The final cost was $230 for all three benches, she adds.

Once constructed, CMS artists took over.

“The G & T students designed and painted our benches so they are inviting and welcoming to their peers,” says Scotland.

“They chose vibrant colors and symbols of kindness.

Each bench has been placed in an area utilized for recess, with one out front, another on the small-

er playground, and the last on the larger playground.

“When a student is in need of a friend and or would like to get to know a new friend, he/she simply goes and sits on the bench,” she says. “This will be a si-

lent signal to his/her peers to come over and talk.

Together, they can decide what to play.

“The benches will be another tool to motivate our students to make some social connections all while

placing kindness in the middle of that interaction,” says Scotland. “The benches are a symbol of kindness and the richness that follows.”

MOHS Graduate Sponsors AVM Cenotaph To Remember Soldiers Missing In Action

By Cheryl Conway he All Veterans Memorial at Turkey Brook Park in Budd Lake has been very thorough in memorializing all the U.S. armed forces’ men and women, who have served, are serving or died while fighting for the country.

Volunteers are constantly adding on to this educational complex, such as its War Dog Memorial completed last year, to its current project- the AVM MIA Cenotaph, to honor a group of people whose remains are elsewhere. Dedicated to the countless missing U.S. warriors that never returned home from battle, the MIA Cenotaph will be dedicated to all branches of service and all conflicts, battles and wars.

Since its location will be where the flag retirement vault has been located, how fitting is it that the sponsor of the flag burning vault returns to the AVM as the sponsor of the new cenotaph.

Eric Wood, a 2010 graduate of Mt. Olive High School, is sponsoring the AVM MIA Cenotaph as a way to hold on to the project that he got involved with ten years ago as a Boy Scout.

“I moved away,” explains Wood of Jacksonville, Fla., “it’s hard to stay involved with the physical appearance” of the AVM. “Being that it’s in Mt. Olive, that’s my mark, that’s my legend. It started with me and I still want to be involved with it.”

Wood first got involved with the AVM through his mother, Charlie Uhrmann, founder of the AVM.

“I was a little boy,” says Wood, and as his Eagle Scout project he proposed an American flag pole and retirement vault and the planting of 21 Norwegian spruces to act as a sound barrier between the sports complex and the memorial ground.

Completed on May 25, 2007, Wood’s community service project was considered the ground breaking of the AVM. In accordance to federal and U.S. flag codes, Wood’s Perpetual Flag Retirement Vault followed uniform guidelines for the proper disposal of the U.S. Flag and traditional Boy Scouts of American flag retirement ceremonies. His burning element was engineered for the more formal retirement ceremony which requires each star and stripe to be cut away and burned independently, explains Uhrmann.

After meeting with township officials and environment experts, Wood placed a stainless steel grid to include a small burn element into a concrete vault to meet any safety and environment issues involved with flag burning such as toxins released when burning a synthetic fiber, controlling a large flame in a high wind area and minimizing black soot and airborne debris.

His completed project “was safe for the young scouts, the community and the environment,” says Uhrmann.

But, a decade later, AVM board members have decided, with Wood’s backing, to repurpose the flag burning vault and create the AVM MIA Cenotaph.

With another fire pit that had been created at the park, the need for two was unnecessary. The Turkey Brook Park Fire Pit, located near the exit of the park, has been designated as a commemorative gathering point and flag retirement ground for the local scouting organizations. It was renamed in Oct. 2016 by the township to honor one of Mt. Olive’s beloved and most devoted Girl Scout leader Mary Koenig, says Uhrmann.

“Upon concluding that two flag retirement areas were not necessary and at the exact same time agreeing the vault could be incorporated into the MIA Cenotaph, we reached out to Eric Wood to see if he approve of the re-purposing of the vaul,” she explains.

In response to their plans, Wood response was “I have always been supportive of the AVM and completely understand why they need to make changes.

The moment I was told how the vault would be used, I offered to fund the project.

It is the least I could do.”

Thus far, the AVM’s MIA Cenotaph “will be the first in our nation to be all encompassing,” says Uhrmann, and will be dedicated to the countless missing U.S. warriors that never returned home from battle.

“The monument will be dedicated to all branches of service and all conflicts, battles and wars.”

Holy books will be placed into the cenotaph.

“Books of authority, representing the many faiths of our servicemen and women will be ceremoniously placed into the vault and permanently sealed,” she

says. “I have spent the last several months researching the many religions of our service members and take personal responsibility to make certain it represents all members in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“Mt. Olive will possess the only cenotaph that encompasses all MIAs in all wars,” she explains. “I have 13 books of authority that will be placed into the tomb.

The cenotaph will be unveiled and dedicated on May 25 at the AVM’s ten year anniversary event.

In a few weeks, “We will be inviting faith leaders to a special ceremony so that they can pray over and/or set the books of authority into the vault before we permanently seal it up. I have decided to wait until we have somewhat completed the area to a more dignified landscape. It will be a historical moment; I want the event to be attended and supported by those who truly understand the sanctity and magnitude of what we are doing.”

The cenotaph was Uhrmann’s idea.

“The most common comments we receive about the AVM is that it provides

an overwhelming peace to those who visit,” says Uhrmann. “While no one can seem to explain why, most have stated that the AVM is serene. Now I think that is very interesting since the AVM is surrounded by a busy road and soccer fields.

The multi-faceted All Veterans Memorial Park honors those who serve(d) in the U.S. Armed Forces, those who perished, those they left behind, our canine warriors, and U.S. Presidents.

The memorial ground pays homage to our fallen heroes, our POW’s and our wounded warriors. The educational complex denotes the people’s Bill of Rights, five branches of service,

U.S. battles and conflicts, the three branches of government, and the fifty states.

There was only one thing missing… a monument to remind us all that some of our brave warriors never returned. Forgetting them is not an option.”

The total cost for the materials to complete the project is estimated upwards of $17,000. “Similar to all the funding at the AVM, we rely 100 percent on private donations.”

The design of the cenotaph will consist of two structures: the U.S. Folded Flag atop the vault for the KIA/MIA and Eagle atop the obelisk for POW’s.

Netcong School Wears Red Supporting Women’s Heart Health

o raise awareness among local women that heart disease is their number one health threat, Netcong Elementary School participated in the National Wear Red Day on Fri., Feb. 3.

According to Chief School Administrator Dr. Gina Cinotti, “Our school Wear Red Day is a great

opportunity to reach out to women in our community and alert them to their personal risk factors for heart disease. By joining together we can raise awareness locally about heart disease and help lead women on the path to prevention.”

hristine Piper lost her best friend when her mother died on Oct. 28, 2016, and now she wants to organize a group to help her and others deal with bereavement. Mary Ann Giordano of Roxburywas 71 when she succumbed to cancer.

She is hoping to find people also in stages of grief, to meet monthly for an hour at the Mt. Olive Public Library. The group would be run by the members and that it could evolve to include clergy or psychologists and other experts in grief reduction.

A Flanders resident since 1996, Piper has a husband, Brian, along with twin sons James and Marshall who “has been feeling the loss of their grandmother.”

MOHS Teacher Receives National Award

hris Praml, TV production teacher at Mt. Olive High School, has been named Educational Innovator of the Year by Corp America, a magazine that covers the U.S. business market.

A teacher at MOHS since 2009, Praml received his award for steadily developing the production program over the years and for his dedication in helping students learn handson, professional level skills.

Under his guidance, the TV department launched its own public access station, MOTV, which operates in association with the township, and partnered with Fairleigh Dickinson University to offer advanced

TV students college credit for their work.

Praml holds a b.s. degree in digital communication and master’s degrees

in educational/instructional technology and educational leadership and administration.

Blueberry Key Lime Cheesecake Bars Recipe courtesy of Inside BruCrew Life blog Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Servings: 24 Nonstick cooking spray 30 vanilla cream-filled cookies 1/4 cup butter, melted 3 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup sour cream 1/3 cup key lime juice 1 tablespoon key lime zest 1/4 cup flour

3 eggs green gel food coloring (optional) 1 can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Blueberry Pie Filling, divided 1 container (8 ounces) whipped topping, thawed key lime slices (optional) Place baking sheet on bottom rack of oven. Fill halfway with water. Heat oven to 325 F. Line 9-by13-inch pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray.

Using food processor, pulse cookies until crumbly. Stir together crumbs and butter. Press evenly into bottom of prepared pan.

Beat cream cheese until

creamy. Add sugar and sour cream, and beat again until smooth. Add key lime juice, zest and flour, and beat until mixed thoroughly. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat gently after each. Add green food coloring to cheesecake mixture, if desired.

This is a time when many families display their best recipes, and these may include certain desserts that can be labor-intensive to make or something more fitting for a special occasion.

Cheesecake is an example of a dessert that, due to the time it takes to create and the richness of the dessert itself, is not something many people eat on a regular basis. However,

1 tablespoon cinnamon 1⁄2 cup caramel topping 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Unroll one package of crescent dough into a shallow baking pan. Roll out the dough to edges.

2. Heat the cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl, uncovered, on high for 30 to 40 seconds, or until softened. Whisk until almost smooth.

3. Add the egg, vanilla and 1⁄2 cup of the sugar to the bowl. Whisk until smooth. Spread over the crescent dough.

4. Lightly sprinkle the flat side of a cutting board with flour. Unroll the sec-

ond package of crescent dough and roll it into a 13by 12-inch rectangle.

5. Fold the dough in half from the short end; gently lift and place in the pan.

Unfold and gently stretch the dough over the cream cheese layer; press the edges to seal. Cut off corners of dough hanging over and discard.

6. Bake 22 to 24 minutes, until golden brown.

7. Combine the remaining 1⁄4 cup sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Place the caramel topping in a 1-cup measuring cup.

8. Remove the pan from the oven. Immediately pour

the caramel topping over the cheesecake and spread to the edges of the crust.

Sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture; let

stand for 10 minutes.

9. Using a utility knife, cut into 4 x 6 rows to make 24 squares.

MOHS Hosts Successful Region Two Wrestling Tournament

t. Olive Wrestling qualified nine wrestlers for the Region two tournament after finishing second in the District six Tournament.

This is the most the team has qualified in program history! The wrestlers that qualified were Shane Murphy, Dylan Hanlon, David Mathusek, Anthony Spera, Dominick Hink, AJ Pinto, Dominick Spera, David Opis and Jayvon Davidson.

Wrestling began on Wednesday evening with Murphy, Hanlon, Hink, Pinto and Davidson advancing to the Friday night matches with wins. Friday the tournament gets tough with some of the best wrestlers in the state competing to win one of four spots to

go to the state championships in Atlantic City. It was a tough Friday night that saw all five wrestlers lose and drop in to the wrestle back round. Once

in the wrestle back rounds, one needs to win their next two matches to advance to Atlantic City.

Both Hink and Pinto finished the tournament

by qualifying for Atlantic City. Hink took fourth and Pinto took third in the 32 team Region tournament. A great accomplishment and one only a few wrestlers

get to experience. Hanlon, Murphy and Davidson finished sixth in this very tough region.

Murphy is tied for fifth all time in Mount Olive history with 102 career wins!

Not the football game, the Souper Bowl of Caring! It’s changing the game of football into a game of caring where schools and organizations collect canned soup for a local food pantry.

This year, the gifted and talented students in grades one and two in Netcong planned and coordinated the event. The students created signs to promote the Souper Bowl, they encouraged their fellow students to participate by visiting classrooms to discuss the importance of their donations and how it affects their community.

The students also used

organizational skills to collect data on the students that had brought in cans of soup. Students used their food donation to cast their vote for their favorite team in this years “real” Super Bowl, the Atlanta Falcons or the New England Patriots.

There were a total of 153 cans collected. The Atlanta Falcons was determined the “winner” having received the most votes of 118. The New England Patriots received 35 cans. All donations were given to the United Methodist Church in Stanhope.

Netcong School Celebrates 100th Day

etcong School students are 100 days smarter! Feb. 6 marked the 100th Day of school for the Netcong Elementary School. To commemorate the day various events and activities were held throughout the day.

Students created signs to hang around the school and made announcements every 100 minutes about current events of the year 1916. Additionally, students wrote about places they wanted to visit before they turn 100. Places include the Eiffel Tower, Egypt, China, and Disneyworld. During lunch, students participated in games to promote math skills in which students would guess which container held 100

Church of the Messiah’s Hosts Local Artisans Show

- 9 p.m. Several artists have agreed to present and sell their creations. The show will feature a woodworker, jeweler, potter, soap maker, welder, stained glass worker, basket weaver, spinner, candle maker and more.

This will be an intimate setting and will offer an opportunity to meet the artisans and learn more about their crafts. There is no admission charge but donations will be gladly accepted.

All proceeds help to support the Church’s ministry and community outreach programs. These include providing and serving meals at

a Morris County homeless shelter, donating food to local food pantries, providing Christmas and Easter gift baskets to needy families and seniors, and supporting a ministry which provides formula, baby food, diapers and other supplies for needy mothers with infants.

New CASA Volunteers Sworn In As Advocates For Abused, Neglected Children

n Feb. 23, a group of community volunteers were sworn in as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

by The Honorable Maritza Berdote Byrne in Morristown. CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties, a local non-profit organization, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

The new volunteers have made the extraordinary commitment to “speak up” for these vulnerable children in court and to ensure that they receive the medical and educational resources they need to thrive, and most importantly that they find permanent, safe,

and nurturing homes in a timely manner.

Family and friends gathered in the Morris County Courthouse to watch the volunteers take an oath agreeing to advocate for the best interest of the child and to perform the role of a judiciary volunteer. Among the new volunteers are Elaine Backer of Randolph, Agnes Clyne of Morristown, Janet Davis of Morristown, Adele Fasano of Morristown, Karen Gruss of Long Valley, Dawn Haagensen of Morristown, Thomas Kelleher of Madison, Jeanne Seigle of Morristown, and Michelle Sharpe of Towaco.

CASA volunteers participate in an extensive 36 hour training program before officially being sworn in to be assigned a child in

the foster care system. The CASA volunteers ensure that these vulnerable children receive the educational and medical resources they need to thrive and that they find safe, permanent, loving homes as soon as possible.

CASA volunteers visit with the child regularly attend court hearings, school

meetings, and meet with all parties involved in the child’s case. The volunteers report their findings to the judge and make recommendations for the child’s best interest.

“Our volunteers pledge to stay with each child until the case is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home,” said

Lisa Barsky Firkser, executive director of Court Appointed Special Advocates of Morris and Sussex Counties. “The advocate is often the only consistent adult presence in the child’s life.”

Why Dental Hygiene Is Essential For Overall Health

he health of teeth and gums can impact other parts of the body.

The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health.

Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor.

Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present.

That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy.

port the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population.

Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain.

Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer.

Alzheimer’s disease Various health ailments, including poor oral health,

have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease.

Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium - Porphyromonas gingivalis - was present in the Alzheimer’s brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums.

These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health.

Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.

Turtle Back Zoo Helps To Save Sea Turtles With New Center

he Prudential Sea Turtle Recovery Center at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo opened last month. The County is partnering with the non-profit Sea Turtle Recovery to operate the facility, which will nurse cold-stunned or injured turtles back to health so they can be released back into the ocean.

“The Sea Turtle Recovery expands our preservation and education programs and will heighten our visitors’ awareness about protecting animals and the environment,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo.

“To be able to develop a Sea Turtle Rescue center here in Essex County and help the very animals after which our zoo is named is a great resource to the animal

rescue community and fills a great need. It’s a great example of how zoos and animal rescue organizations can work together to save animals and raise the public’s awareness about the dangers animals face.”

Freeholder Patricia Sebold said “This is a marvelous addition to Turtle Back Zoo and is an example of the County Executive’s commitment to make this place successful.”

As water temperatures drop this time of year in the Northeast (Virginia to Maine), especially in Cape Cod and Long Island, biologists and volunteers prepare for an average of more than 570 sea turtles that are stunned by the cold, a reaction that can lead to frostbite, malnutrition, dehydration, shock, pneumonia and possibly death. In

addition, sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean are threatened by fishing line entanglement, plastic ingestion, boat strikes, and loss of natural nesting and feeding sites because of coastal development.

In 2014, more than 700 live sea turtles washed ashore in the Northeast.

The facility at Turtle Back Zoo joins eight other facilities in the region that have the capacity to care for cold stunned or injured sea turtles.

At Essex County Turtle Back Zoo, an antiquated building was torn down and replaced with a modern 4,000-square-foot facility.

The new building has five recovery tanks, life support systems, and an intensive care unit for more critically injured turtles. Zoo visitors will be able to see less crit-

ical patients while learning about the perils sea turtles face and what the public can do to help. Once the turtles have regained their health, they will be released back into their natural habitat.

“Turtle Back Zoo already is a special place where children and families can learn to appreciate animals. Introducing the Sea Turtle Recovery Center helps take our educational programming to the next level and gives us an active role in protecting and preserving wild animals,” Turtle Back Zoo Director Brint Spencer said. “Having the rehabilitation center on site fits into our mission of conservation and expands the potential for animal awareness.”

The Zoo is partnering with The Sea Turtle Re-

covery, a non-profit organization based in Northfield.

The Sea Turtle Recovery is dedicated to the rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of sea turtles.

Its current work extends throughout the state educating the public about the ecological role of sea turtles, threats they face, and ways to protect their

future. With the opening of the recovery center at Turtle Back Zoo, The Sea Turtle Recovery can begin to fulfill the other portion of its mission, which is to rehabilitate sea turtles for release back into the wild.

have always dreamed about going to Machu Picchu but it seemed so unreachable and difficult to get to. I thought between the high elevations, hiking, and camping, it would be too difficult but it would also be a wonderful and educational family adventure.

The history, culture, and cuisine would be so very different from rural northern New Jersey; we decided it was somewhere we had to go.

Nine of us were hoping to take this trip with ages ranging from 8-68 as well as a range of physical abil-

ities. It would be quite a logistical puzzle to get around and see everything and still be affordable. We decided a loosely guided tour was best for us and then we can fill in any gaps. We chose a trip with Monograms. A tour like this would provide us with all our transportation, a local guide at each destination and our accommodations. Just like that all of our puzzle pieces were coming together and the trip was coming to fruition.

We took the trip in April. We knew the weather would be unpredictable so we packed many layers

and were prepared for it all.

Each child packed his or her own pack filled with snacks and entertainment for travel days. They were each given a scavenger hunt, and a fun “quiz” that would guide them through the entire trip so they stayed interested and hopefully absorbed the sites.

We spent warm days exploring all of Lima overlooking the Pacific traveling from one beautiful scenic area to another. We enjoyed Alpaca farms, historical sights, small farmers markets with everything from fresh fruit to roasted guinea

pigs on sticks and we even hit a cow with our van!

When we arrived at the high elevation in Cusco we were all prepared. We listened to all the suggested ways to avoid altitude sickness and were glad we did.

From Cusco we continued on to Aguas Calientes. An amazing little town built at the base of Machu Picchu.

The town was filled with people for one reason - to see Machu Picchu. All the hikers who took the long Inca trail come together with those of us who had the same dream to see Machu Picchu but not willing

or able to hike for 4 days to get there.

We woke up at sunrise to catch the very first bus up the mountain. The bus climbed the switchbacks as the sun was starting to rise and the clouds were now below us. It was unbelievable.

The view we had all seen in books was now in front of us. It was even more amazing than our imaginations.

We spent the morning taking it all in and exploring. We tried to capture this moment with many photos and deep breaths.

The trip back to Lima was a bit of a blur overshad-

owed by what we had just experienced. With our guide and all of our transportation taken care of for us we could sit back, review all our photos and share our favorite highlights with each other. I particularly loved looking at the kids cameras and seeing what they captured and hearing them tell stories of how their friends will be shocked they ate a guinea pig!

New Jersey Attorney General Hands Down Opinion On Long Debated Dry Needling By Physical Therapists

n Feb. 9, the New Jersey Attorney General ruled that under the current statue, physical therapists are not authorized to engage in the practice of intramuscular stimulation or dry needling.

This decision comes after a long dispute between the State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and the New Jersey Acupunc-

ture Examining Board as to whether acupuncture falls outside the scope of practice of physical therapy.

The issue first arose 2006, when a licensed physical therapist sought the Physical Therapy Board’s opinion as to whether intramuscular stimulation fell within their realm of treatment. At that time, the Board indicated that

physical therapy excludes invasive procedures. In 2009, the topic arose again, and this time, despite the absence of any legislative change, the Board indicated that nothing in the rules and regulations prohibited licensed physical therapists from dry needling, if they had proper training. This misinterpretation of the scope of practice prompt-

To ensure the safety of patients and the proper training and licensing of professionals, the New Jersey Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NJAAOM) fought tirelessly for the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to provide guidance on the topic, eventually seeking the Attorney General’s ruling on the matter.

by the New Jersey Attorney General is decisive and unambiguous, and ensures that no other professional board uses the same tactic of negative logic to expand their scope of practice,” said Jason Sargis, President of NJAAOM. “We have waited a long time for this, and it is a victory not only for acupuncturists in New Jersey, but those practicing nationwide.”

eet Dylan from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Dylan is a fabulous Labrador Retriever/Husky mix who is about four years old. This love muffin has one blue eye and a curly tail that really make him stand out.
