the park is going to receive a sprucing up. In addition to the refurbishments, they will not only be visually pleasing, they will be enhancements for everyone. Including those with special needs.

Officials have budgeted approximately $300,000 for improvements.

Construction is slated to start in April and finished by the end of June before school lets out for the summer. The park is located on Flanders Barley Road and township officials are thrilled to see it renovated.

“Flanders Park will be renovated in stages over the next two years,” explains Marketing Director of Mt. Olive Recreation De-

partment, Elizabeth Meininger, “We are currently installing a 24 by 36 concrete pad and gazebo, which should be done by March, weather permitting. Once the budget is approved in the next few weeks, we will be authorizing a new contract to install a new swing set and an ADA compliant playground.”

Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities.

The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue.

The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination. For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- by- case basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior.

The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. A single Chinese herbal formula can also be prescribed to treat both the root and branch of the chronic fatigue syndrome.

In easy walking distance from Flanders Crossing and the Cloverhill Development, with easy access to the new Regency Development, the park is very active for spring sports and in summertime for families.

The response from the public has been extremely positive.

In fact, it can be said that these revamped enhancements were influenced by the community itself. “The public has been asking for the park to be updated, requesting more components and shade,” Meininger tells.

There’s even a walking track used by adults and kids alike, and the basketball courts have been resurfaced. After April 15th, lights for the basketball courts will remain on until 9:00 p.m.

Looking to down the road, future improvements will include the construction of a Gaga Pit. Gaga is high energy, fast paced game played in a pit shaped like an octagon. It is described as a kinder gentler form of dodgeball, played with a soft foam ball where the more players there are, the better. Other ideas include a bocce and volleyball court. Additionally, they are working on obtaining a sponsor to help fund an adult exercise equipment area.

With all of the ideas swirling around, Mt Olive is extremely excited regarding the plans for Flanders Park. In particular, Meininger is eager to see how the new improvements benefit all the children out there, making it a fun place for all. “They were chosen to be able to meet the kids at all levels of mobility,” she asserts. “We are hoping

Mrs. Rowe and her husband owned an ice cream store, where she worked and managed the shop during the day. A nostalgic and iconic place, Mr. and Mrs. Rowe’s shop, Hershey’s Ice Cream Parlor of Rockaway, boasted a soda fountain, juke box, penny candy, and the best ice cream around, it was the place for kids to hang out at after school. Later, Mrs. Rowe worked at APW Company in Rockaway, which is still in business, creating product lines of standard electromagnets used in applications that include security door applications, automatic fire door

applications, dentist chairs, and medical diagnostic equipment.

When she and her husband retired, Mr. and Mrs. Rowe were actively involved and hugely instrumental in the creation of the Rockaway Senior Club, where Mrs. Rowe reigned as president for 21 years.

Mrs. Rowe claims the secret to living a healthy life is to keep moving, stay busy, help others, and eat well, chowing down on very few processed foods and lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

100 Special Olympics Medals and More for Budd Lake Man

By Janie Rosman uring the past 17 years, Todd Gensheimer has been competing in the Special Olympics New Jersey where he’s clinched more than 100 medals, competing since age 11, his mom Liz Gensheimer said. “He has three older brothers, and as a family we all ski. He’s very athletic, compassionate and fun loving,” his mom said. And he knows his sports!

He trains six times either Saturday or Sunday at Shawnee Ski Resort in Pennsylvania, his mom said. “We always skied as a family, and once he was old enough, we thought it would be great exercise and fun.” They also visit the gym three to four times per week and that Todd works with a personal trainer for half an hour each week.

Gensheimer, of Budd Lake, competed in the Alpine Skiing event during the

2019 Special Olympics New Jersey Winter Games at Mountain Creek Tuesday. He won a Gold Medal in that competition —called super-G or super giant slalom, a racing form of alpine skiing — and a Silver Medal in the Giant Slalom. Each win is unique and special. “It’s always, ‘Wow, another medal!’” Gensheimer said of her son, who also swims and plays basketball.

While he stays active throughout the sports, he is also very active in the community. Three days a week you’ll find him working at Panera Bread in the Succasunna – Roxbury Mall, and he works with Abilities of Northwest Jersey in Hackettstown as well. “He’s very social and loves interacting with people and is helpful and compassionate,” Gensheimer said. “Both of my grandsons love Uncle Todd.”

According to Liz Gensheimer, her son is affectionately known as the mayor of the Special Olympics. His positive outlook on life and happy go lucky nature have helped him to really live each day.

“Todd’s been involved with Special Olympics since he was old enough to participate,” his uncle Bill Tickle said. Tickle became involved through his son Mark, who passed away in a car accident in 2016. “About five years ago I was refereeing a high school sports game, and

someone said they needed help with Special Olympics. I offered, and Todd came walking up to me at the second game!”

Gensheimer recently took to the Polar Plunge to help raise money for the Special Olympics. Since its inception five years ago, Team Todd – Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics raised more than $66,000 and bears the motto “We Jump for Todd in Memory of Mark!” Gensheimer participated in the recent February 23 Plunge, which raised more than $12,000.

Gensheimer will be competing again with the Special Olympics soon as the games for basketball and the meets for swimming will round out at the end of March.

Church Offers Drive-Thru Presentation of Christ’s Life

by Elsie Walker t is a great experience, to see the life of Christ in 15 minutes,” said Kevin Iaione, of Mansfield. On April 19 and 20, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day (weather permitting), people can see scenes from the story of Christ’s birth through resurrection from the comfort of their cars. Mountaintop Church at 6 Naughright Road, Hackettstown will be presenting a drive-thru presentation of significant events in Jesus’ life in its parking lot. The presentation is free and all are welcomed to attend.

The church’s pastor, Rev. Matt Jones and Iaione shared what those coming can expect to see after they come into the church parking lot. The first thing will be an easy-up tent.

There, each car will be given a CD to put in its player and asked to proceed (with the car

windows down, if possible) to drive through the presentation.

Each scene takes only a couple of minutes; Jones explained that actors at each scene “sort of mime the action” to the CD’s narration. Then, the car moves to the next scene. Scenes are spaced about 35-45 feet apart.

The scenes depict Jesus’ birth, Jesus and His miracles, Jesus walking on water, the Last Supper and Jesus’ betrayal, Jesus before Pilate, Jesus on the cross between the two thieves, and Jesus, women and angels at the resurrection. This year an eighth scene, which Jones describe as “something special”, may be added. At the end, each car is greeted and palm crosses are given to the occupants.

Although it is setup for cars, Jones shared that in the past at least one person has walked through it, listening to the CD

on a boom box provided by the church.

“What’s cool about it is that people who may not be comfortable coming in for a play or staying for something long [can see it all from their cars],” noted Jones.

The presentation has been done three times before at the church (bad weather kept it from being held last year.) The idea for the presentation came from Iaione, a

member of the congregation.

Iaione said that drivethru presentations like that are done in the South, in states such as Florida. Many years ago, he was at a church which did one and that was how he first learned about the concept. Since then, Iaione has shared the concept with other churches. However, he notes that it takes the efforts of about 50 congregation members to put it on and he appreciates their commitment, and them taking away from their Easter weekend to put it on. “I thank the congregation for doing this,” he said.

Alicia Perkins and her family, husband Larry, and sons Andy and Josh have been involved in the presentation for years. The Budd Lake resident explained that her sons have played Jesus at two different points in His life. This will be the fourth time Josh has played Jesus on the cross. Commenting on the presentation, Alicia Perkins said, “What’s really special is it is a way to tell the story of Jesus without words.”

Another congregation member, Emily Pearson of Long Valley, noted that the work need-

ed for the presentation gives a chance for everyone in the congregation to get involved.

Mount Olive Township Police Department Joins ‘Neighbors’ by Ring

By Henry M. Holden t. Olive Twp. is 32 square miles consisting of Budd Lake and Flanders and intersected by one interstate highway (Rt.80) and two busy State Roads, Rt. 46, and Rt. 206.

The police department has 50 sworn officers supported by a civilian staff. The Communications Center handles 85,000 calls for service annually, dispatching for police, fire, and emergency medical services within the township. Its population is more than 29,000, so, the township has a lot of people and territory to protect.

The Mount Olive Township Police Department on March 12 announced that it is the first law enforcement agency in Morris County to join the ‘Neighbors’ by Ring app.

The Neighbors by Ring app is a neighborhood watch app that provides users with real-time, local crime and safety information. Ring’s mission is to reduce

crime in neighborhoods by creating a Ring of Security around homes and communities. Ring is an Amazon company. The Ring product line, along with Neighbors

by Ring, enable Ring to offer Mt. Olive residents whole-home and neighborhood security devices and services. In fact, one Los Angeles neighborhood saw a 55 percent decrease in home break-ins after Ring Doorbells were installed in just ten percent of the homes.

The Neighbors network already has millions of users and has been instrumental in catching package thieves, stopping burglaries, and keeping neighborhoods safe. As seen on the local news TV stations over this past holiday season, the Ring app was instrumental in recording and later apprehending package thieves and deterring burglaries.

What’s in Your Water?

T

he Mount Olive Township Environmental Commission and Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) are sponsoring reduced-cost well water testing for Mount Olive residents.

If your household water comes from a private well, it is not tested by any state or local authority. You are responsible for the quality of your well water. Mount Olive residents may have their well water tested for coliform bacteria and nitrates for $60. Test kits for other contaminants, such as lead, arsenic and radon, are available for additional cost.

Each test kit comes with easyto-follow instructions and all required containers.

Test kits may be purchased on Sat. May 18, between 9

a.m. and noon at the Mount Olive municipal building cafeteria. Payment by check is preferred.

The water samples must be dropped off at the municipal building on Mon. May 20, between 7 and 10 a.m. Raritan Headwaters will ensure that all samples reach a state-certified laboratory later that day for testing. Test results are communicated directly to the residents. If pollutants are detected, RHA will provide information to help well owners address the problems and make their water safe for consumption.

Nationally, nearly half of all people get their water from groundwater sources. Approximately 80 percent of people living in the Raritan Headwa-

ters region rely on groundwater. The EPA and NJ DEP both recommend that private wells be tested annually for coliform and nitrates.

Both human-caused and naturally occurring contaminants are often found in private wells. Nitrates and bacteria, which can lead to immediate and serious health conditions, may be found in well water as a result of a poorly performing septic system or a nearby agricultural source.

Two naturally occurring elements, arsenic and radon, are also commonly found in well water in northwestern New Jersey. Scientific studies associate long-term exposure to arsenic and radon with cancer and other health effects. Lead may be present in drinking

water if there is lead-based solder in pipes or lead components in well pumps. The lead is leached by corrosive water and can cause physical or mental development problems in infants and children.

Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education Campaign

aw enforcement officers from the Mount Olive Township Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s UDrive.

Beginning April 1 and running through April 21, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving.

Chief Stephen Beecher stated “The last three years we have averaged over 800 traffic crashes a year in Mount Olive Township. Distracted driving is a significant contributing factor in a large number of these crashes. By participating in the Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education Campaign we

hope to drive down those numbers for safer roadways.”

Eric Heitmann, Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, points out that New Jersey is one of only four states nationally (along with Maine, Connecticut, and Oregon) to qualify for and receive dedicated federal grant funding to combat distracted driving. “This is clearly one of the most critical traffic safety issues that we face today,” Heitmann said. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2016 alone, 3,450 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and an estimated 391,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.”

Chabad Finds a Home in Flanders

By Elsie Walker he Chabad Jewish Center was started in 2004 by Rabbi Yaacov and Fraida Shusterman. Serving the Jewish community in Chester, Mt. Olive, Washington, and Warren County, the Chabad rented various spaces for high holy day services and other events.

That changed on February 3rd when the Chabad got a permanent home for its various offerings at 11 Deerfield Place, Flanders. Its website is www. mychabadcenter.com Shusterman, who is also the Jewish Chaplain at the Morris County Correctional facility, explained that the Chabad is a Hasidic group that’s very much into “outreach instead of in reach”. “It invites the entire community. It is open to ev-

erybody,” he said. For example, there are no tickets necessary for high holiday days.

The rabbi noted that through word of mouth they find other Jews in the community. “Not all people come to us, so we come to them,” said Shusterman. “We visit people in their offices and homes.”

They bring those they visit Challah (a Sabbath bread).

There are about 500 Jewish families currently on the Chabad’s mailing list.

The rabbi shared that the Chabad offers “programs that strengthen the Jewish identity” and that “we try to come to everyone at their level.”

Among those programs at the Chabad is a Hebrew school. It is every Sun. from 10 a.m. – noon for ages 6-

Jimenez has run an event planning firm for many years. She became a Simply Protein advocate after losing her main client, which freed up her time, and after losing 50 lbs. through an Ideal Protein clinic in Livingston—which changed her life.

“The owner and I had become friends,” she says. “She said, ‘I need someone and you have time on your hands. Come work with me.’ She trained me, and I went for additional training with the company. I already knew the program.”

Jimenez adds up clients’ weekly weigh-ins to assess how well they’re losing weight— walk-in clients lost a total of 157.5 lbs. in January, she notes. That includes only people who come into the office for the program; she also visits various companies in the region and conducts weigh-ins on site.

She also assesses each member’s body mass index, or BMI, weekly to ensure clients are burning fat, not muscle.

“It’s nice to see people losing the weight, but the non-scale victories are the ones we’re excited about,” Jimenez says, noting that eating healthier helps clients achieve more than just a smaller wardrobe.

Lowering sugar intake levels can help people with a variety of health issues such as ADHD, autism and bipolar disorders as well. “We have a lot of doctors sending people our way,” she says. “They’ll walk in and say, ‘I don’t care how I look, but my health though is everything to me.’”

Jimenez does not work with anyone under the age of 18 unless medically referred by a physician; she also does not take on clients having Type 1 Diabetes, as the keto protocol could be life threatening to them. “The last thing you want to do is harm anyone’s health

with a weight loss protocol,” she says.

Simply Protein provides a variety of foods for its clients, from omelets to milkshakes to snack foods, and has varieties that are dairy-free and gluten-free. Jimenez works with clients who are vegetarian and vegan as well. Clients who have completed the program and are in Phase 4—maintenance—often come back to buy the food products because they really like them, she adds.

The one thing that surprises her clients most is how often—and how much—they are directed to eat on the program, Jimenez says. “They eat more than normal,” she says.

Catching Up with the Jr.Marauders Football Program

I

t’s the start of spring which means...you guessed it, football registration is underway. From our flag program to our six levels of contact football, there’s a spot for all children in grades first through eighth. Now you may ask yourself why should my child play football? Children play football because it is fun, challenging, and exciting. Most kids love being part of a team. Football teaches cooperation and team work, helps develop positive social skills and teaches respect for others. It helps build self-co nfidence, a positive self-image and selfworth. It enables a child to improve upon and develop a broad range of motor skills like throwing, catching, running, kicking, balance, agility and coordination. Because a large variety of skills and physical abilities are required on a football team, there is a position for every child to play. We strive to teach the fundamentals of football and life – from sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork, to Heads-Up Tackling, and the importance of having fun and building friendships! As a program we continue to invest in our facilities, working hand in hand with Mt. Olive Township

to improve our game fields and practice fields, such as supporting the cost of field lights at $15,000 per year.

This month our program has adopted some troops overseas and have started a go fund me to help with the shipping and supplies we’re sending them. The service men and women to which we are assigned to, are operating in the Global War on Terror in the Persian Gulf. They include special operators and their support teams and vessels. Through this endeavor we hope to teach the kids in our program important lessons, such as service and helping help those who keep us safe.

Vasa Park Opens Pool to the Public

F

or the past 83 years, Budd Lake has been the home to the New Jersey Vasa Park with their property located on Wolfe Road. Vasa Park, which is organized to promote and support Scandinavian-American culture, is the only residential cultural center in the State of New Jersey and one of only two facilities in the nation that provides a residential element to the cultural center. “We presently operate the Park with 87 homes.” Vasa Park President Ken Kallman noted. “We truly have a gem of a facility with over 125 acres of open space that includes a 10,000 ft Cultural Center, a beautifully designed outdoor pavilion, beautiful playground, threeacres of a tree-lined picnic

Dental Implants and Your Gums

ow gums (professionally known as gingiva) affect your dental implants is a very broad & diverse topic, but is extremely important. Without healthy gums, the chances of dental implants failing is significantly increased.

Dental implants have a very high success rate, but if their health is not maintained, dental implants will fail over time, and you may not even be aware of the ongoing situation.

The most intuitive aspect of how your gums interact with dental implants is cleanliness. Just like natural teeth, if you don’t have good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, etc.), you are putting the dental implants at risk of failing. The plaque that builds up on the implants can cause the gums to become irritated, red, puffy, and bleed. In turn, bacteria buildup increases, and the toxins created by the bacteria will erode the gums and underlying bone. The bone will then deteriorate, and melt away from the implant.

The more the bone loss, the more dam-

aged the dental implant / bone interface becomes, and eventually you may lose the implant. You may have no feeling or sensation in your mouth as this process starts or continues.

Another arena of gums and dental implants includes the type of gum tissue present. Basically, there are two types of gum tissue: keratinized (thick, non-mobile gum tissue) and non-keratinized (also known as mucosa), which is thin and mobile.

This quality of gum tissue around dental implants (also known as “biotype”) is extremely important. Thick, non-mobile gum tissue is absolutely preferred over thin, mobile gingiva around dental implants. It is more resistant to abrasion from eating, toothbrushing, and general activity. The more mobile the gum tissue, the more susceptible the dental implant becomes to failure since the gum may erode from noxious stimuli. As the gum recedes, the bone will follow, and a negative pathway of bone loss around

your dental implant ensues, putting your dental implant at risk of failing.

All too often I need to speak to new dental implant patients about the quality of gum tissue described above (biotype).

It is not unusual for patients to be interviewing multiple dentists to determine who they want to provide their dental implant care. If they have already visited one or two other offices and then come to me, they are skeptical when they hear me speaking about this topic if it applies to them. I understand this skepticism, but it is a very important and critical area that should not be overlooked. They are entitled to know about this often overlooked topic, because more often than not it will affect the health of their implant over time. I have had to remove many implants that failed due to this problem.

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

he Mount Olive Township Police Department announces that Patrol Officer Sean Smith, Badge #126, has been released from the Field Training Program and will assume full patrol duties. Chief Stephen Beecher stated “All Mount Olive Police Officers, once they graduate the police academy, must successfully complete the Field Training Program. The program generally lasts three months and rookie officers must successfully meet the five hundred and ninety seven (597) training objectives that cover a multitude of police activities, laws, policies and procedures.” Officer Smith’s Field Training Officer was Patrolman Andrew Spotts.

Good Friday NetcongStanhope Cross Walk

by Elsie Walker n Good Friday, April 19th, a procession will be walking from Stanhope through Netcong. Ahead of the procession, people will be carrying a cross. A tradition for over two decades, the Stanhope-Netcong Cross Walk remembers Jesus Christ’s betrayal, sentencing, and death on the cross by telling parts of the story at each of five places during its journey. All are welcomed to join the walk, either walking all or a part of it. The walk takes about an hour and starts at 11a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Stanhope located at 100 Main Street, Stanhope. Recently, the pastors involved in the cross walk talked about the tradition.

“I do not know or remember when [the cross walk] started, but I believe we have been doing it all 23 years of my time [at First Presbyterian],” said Rev. Hugh Matlack, pastor of the church.

At that first stop, and all the others, scripture will be read, a hymn sung, and a prayer given.

Two volunteers will be asked to carry a large cross to the next stop. Also, as they exit the

Presbyterian church, congregation member, Carol Barry, a bagpiper, will be playing as people move on from that first stop.

“Jesus took his walk to Jerusalem and then to the cross for all humanity, not any particular church or institution or individual or national group. I think our ecumenical event represents his intentions for all of us,” said Matlack.

The second stop is outdoors, near the entrance to the Bell’s Mansion driveway.

There the Rev. Dr. Nick Petrov of the Port Morris United Methodist Church will continue the reading of the events Jesus faced.

“The Good Friday Cross Walk grows each year; those who have experienced it come back again and again. I think that our Good Friday crosswalk is very important because it shows to the community a visible church that has a missional and ecumenical vocation. The Good Friday crosswalk indicates that the church in our day is coming together in a new expression of both diversity and unity. At the same time, of course, it is continued on page 41

The third stop is inside the Stanhope United Methodist Church at #2 Route 183 in Netcong.

“It’s humbling to know that our community comes together to share a small part of Jesus’s journey on Good Friday. When we arrive at the Stanhope United Methodist Church, and watch the cross slowly come down the aisle to a resting place in front of the darkened altar, you can feel the passion, the heaviness of the day. It’s truly inspirational to feel the presence of the community as we share this moment in time

together,” said Lynn Zaremba, pastor of the church.

The fourth stop is the Netcong Train Station on Main Street, where once again people are outside as they hear the story of Jesus’ last day on Earth.

The speaker for that spot will be a Certified Lay servant from the Port Morris United Methodist Church.

From there, the procession will go into its final stop: St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church at 4 Church Street in Netcong.

There they will hear the scripture, sing, and have a final prayer.

Netcong Church Holds English Spring Tea

Community Based Rescue Task Force Coming to Morris County

By Megan Roche unded through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, some local towns will begin to feel a lot safer thanks to a new rescue task force when it comes to the threats of active shooters. The new community-based rescue task force was founded in part with Morris County Sherriff James Gannon and the Responsible School Violence Prevention, Preparation, Protection (RSVP-3) in response to the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Fla. “RSVP-3 is a multi-disciplinary approach to identifying, evaluating and responding to threats to schools, houses of worship and other institutions. RSVP-3 involves the participation of Morris County schools, superintendents, mental health experts, police and emergency services personnel, with the U.S. Secret Service and Office of Homeland Security among the agencies

that provided their expertise.” Gannon said in a press release.

Through RSVP-3, teachers and administrators are being trained on how to handle active shooter situations, but also how to prevent them. This is done through training on mental health crisis’ and enhancing school security. RSVP-3 is also training new recruits at the Morris County Public Safety Academy on tactical response to an active shooter situation.

Currently, when responding to a threat, police must clear the scene and neutralize the threat before they can help the injured. However, with this new task force, the training would provide individuals from the fire department and EMS with the means to go into a situation with a police escort and begin to render aid. By rendering aid earlier, officials are hoping to save people from bleeding out.

“This is about accepting risks, but they’re calculated risks,” Sheriff Gannon

said. “At the end of the day, when the bell rings, we want to neutralize the threat,” he said.

Sheriff Gannon and his team at the Morris County Sheriff’s Department have also recently created an app that will help those in these dire situations. The app, RSVP-3 Morris County, NJ, will enable law enforcement, educational and mental health partners, students, parents, and community members to connect, discover, and anonymously report any act of violence.

With the rise in school shootings, many local school boards are inching up their security measures to prevent incidents from happening. Currently, the communities of Washington Township, Randolph, and Mount Olive have inked agreements to participate in the community rescue task force. Funding provided by the grant would pay for bulletproof vests for EMS workers.

Helping to Ensure that Your Child is Ready for Kindergarten

By Gail Reuther, Executive Director of Mt. Olive Child Care & Learning Center ne of the biggest concerns expressed by parents of 5-year-old children, especially at this time of year, is “how do I know if my child will be ready for Kindergarten”?

Over the years I have seen many children who reach age 5 by October 1st (the cut off date in Mt. Olive Township and most public school districts for Kindergarten entrance) who are ready to go to Kindergarten and some who are not. When those who are not ready are pushed into Kindergarten, they generally experience a difficult Kindergarten year. This can be a frustrating experience for the child and the parent!

True Kindergarten readiness is not an age matter. Nor is it a matter of “passing the test”.

Tests or formal assessments show what a child wants to demonstrate on a given day, not necessarily what the child knows or what his/her future school performance will be.

Factors such as unfamiliarity with the testing environment and the tester, nervousness or a slow-to-warm-up temperament on the part of the child, can prevent him/her from showing the tester what the child really knows or can do.

Let’s take a look at some developmental issues. Children go through the various stages of development in the same order but at different ages. For example, when learning to write every child progresses through the scribbling stage where he/ she makes circular and angular

marks on the paper. The kinds of hand movements the child makes while scribbling are the same movements that he/she will use when making letters.

One child may be interested in, ready, and able to begin writing letters at age 3 and another child may not be ready until age 4 or 4 ½ or even 5.

Children learn by being actively involved with their environment, not by sitting and listening to others for long periods of time. They also cannot handle too much formal structure with an abundance of rules when they are very young. Children need the trust, support, help, and encouragement of parents and other important people in their lives in order to learn.

If a child experience chronic failure due to being corrected or boredom, their self-esteem and confidence is negatively impacted. This same child, given more time and support to develop and mature, can have phenomenal success starting Kindergarten!

What are some of the readiness factors for Kindergarten success? Some of the important indicators include: (1) an ability to attend to tasks (have self-discipline) and follow directions and not be readily distracted; (2) an ability to sit in a group; (3) an ability to socially interact with other children and adults and to be interested in helping and cooperating; (4) language development: an ability to understand what is said to him/her and be able to talk effectively with others (good vocabulary and sentence

structure) so as to be easily understood; and (5) an ability to see oneself as capable: “I can do it!” thinking.

How can you as a parent ensure that your child will be ready for Kindergarten? Here are some ideas: Give your child lots of opportunities to feel pride in his/ her accomplishments. This leads to the child generally approaching tasks in a positive, confident manner.

Parents can help build self-esteem by frequently saying things like “you can do it!”, “I like the way you…”, “It looks like you really worked hard on your drawing?”

Be sure that your child has many experiences interacting with other children prior to entering Kindergarten so he/ she can practice and develop strong social skills. When children attend preschool prior to entering formal schooling, they have the benefit of lots of experience being with their peers and learning some social and emotional life skills. Encourage your child to try to work out conflicts with other children by using words. By doing this, you are helping your child to learn problem-solving and compromising, as well as enabling him/ her to practice verbal skills.

Research has shown a strong correlation between learning cooperation skills and being accepted by peers in Kindergarten and later schooling.

Start where your child is, not where you think he/she should be, when playing games to teach basic skills. Keep in mind that when learning

names of objects, pictures, colors, shapes, letters, numbers, etc., the first level of learning is matching (what is like this one?), the second is recognizing (point to the letter that is like this one), and the higher level is being able to name the letter, etc. For example, if you ask your child “what letter is this?” and he/she doesn’t respond, try backing up: give him/her a choice of 2 and say “please point to the letter A”. If he/she can’t do this, then play letter matching games with your child. Eventually, with encouragement and success at one level, the child will naturally progress to the next level.

Have conversations with your child often every day.

Your child will learn from your positive modeling of language, expand his/her vocabulary, and practice putting words together to make sentences to express self. Including your child’s favorite superhero, doll, or puppet as part of the conversations will increase the fun.

This past August, after over 30 years of being across

The new shop has a more modern feel with tons of natural sunlight and includes two floors of retail space with larger dressing rooms. “It’s a totally different space with a much more open feel and it allows for more customer, volunteer interaction in a welcoming environment,” Moffitt exclaimed. “Since moving here, we have been busy every day, and the parking lot is always filled!”

With their move came some fresh, new ideas. For example, Moffitt was excited to share that the Bargain Box has started carrying activewear, and it’s flying off the shelves.

“Sales for activewear are surpassing denim in the U.S.,” Moffitt explained (And she’s right). According to an article published in 2018 by the Los Angeles Times, U.S. imports of women’s elastic knit pants have surpassed those of jeans for the first time, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. “We carry

brands like Lululemon, and it never stays on the shelf for very long,” Moffitt added.

Along with activewear and everyday clothing, The Bargain Box features some cool seasonal and themed sales, including Black Tie, Prom wear, and swimsuits for the warmer months, and back-to-school, Halloween, and of course Christmas for the colder ones.

The holidays are the most popular time for them, but “Lilly and Tommy,” their Lilly Pulitzer and Tommy Bahama annual event, is a very close second.

This year’s event will take place on June 3rd and will include all the bright colored florals both designers are known for. Locals also enjoy throwing Derby Day parties, and with the Kentucky Derby fast approaching in May, Moffitt plans on featuring some fabulous “Southern Belle” style hats.

“We are so appreciative of customers who come here to support both sales and donations, we couldn’t do it without them,” Moffitt exclaimed.

Many shoppers turn into donators, purchasing items for one-time events and coming back to re-donate them.

Volunteers are also a pivotal part of the process, many of them traveling long distances to make a difference. “Many people have been volunteering for over 25 years, they tend to come on board and make lifelong friends.” The Bargain Box currently has a waiting list for volunteers, but don’t let this deter you from volunteering, because the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center has tons of other opportunities! Known as “co-sleeping,” this practice can put a baby at risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS. In fact, March of Dimes notes that bed-sharing is the most common cause of death in babies younger than three months.

Parents concerned about their children sleeping in another room overnight can still have children with them in their bedrooms, though the American Academy of Pediatrics rec-

ommends that babies sleep in a bassinet or crib rather than share a bed with their parents.

To further reduce a child’s risk of SIDS, parents should place their babies to sleep on their backs on flat, firm surfaces, such as a crib mattress covered with a tightly fitted sheet. Only use the mattress designed exclusively for the crib in which the child will be sleeping, as this should ensure that there are no spaces between the mattress and the crib frame. If such spaces exist, babies can easily roll into them but won’t be strong enough to pull themselves out.
