Mt. Olive Will Be ‘Beachy’ Keen Jellybean With More Options To Cool Off This Summer

By Cheryl Conway hen it comes to keeping cool, local residents will have more options without traveling to the beach, out-of-town community pool or water park. After being closed for three seasons in a row, 2015, 2016 and 2017, Budd Lake Beach will reopen this summer to swimmers. For those who like to run and splash, Pirate’s Cove at Turkey Brook Park will entertain little ones for hours. The options will not end there. Township officials are considering the idea for a town pool in the future. “We continue to look for and pursue opportunities to actually have a town pool,” says Mt. Olive Twp. Mayor Rob Greenbaum. “If the right opportunity arises, we will move forward with both sum-

mer activities.” In 2015, township officials decided to close Budd Lake Beach for swimming. Fewer residents were using the beach, while expenditures to maintain and pay lifeguards continued. “In 2015 we changed the designation of the site to Budd Lake Park, and it was not operated as Public Recreation Bathing Facility,” says Jill Daggon, Mt. Olive recreation supervisor. “The public could access the beach to picnic, play in the sand and fish from the new fishing pier. Stand Up Paddleboard workshops were held, and the Sailing course provided by Morris Sail-

ing. People can still canoe or kayak from the area.” After some feedback, officials learned that a good majority wanted the beach to be reopened for swimming. “Comments were made about missing the beach activities, and having daily staff to keep the facility cleaned up from geese and aquatic vegetation along the water line,” says Daggon.
