AVM To Remember Prisoners And Missing Warriors At Day Long Vigil

Brook Park in Budd Lake. They plan to unveil and dedicate the Remembrance Ceremonial Ground at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 and with that the POW/MIA Remembrance Wall that will feature an original hand-painted mural by a renowned artist.

21 by presenting the Color Guard and ceremoniously setting the Table for One. They will also participate in the lighting of the POW/MIA Flame with the AVM Board of Directors.

Church To Host Painting Fundraiser For Veterans

By Jane Primerano ainting parties have become popular in many forms.

Women gather in each other’s homes or at wineries for “paint and sip” parties. Mothers and daughters or grandmothers and granddaughters get together to paint. It has become a fad that many women, and some men, enjoy.

Joyce Lahmidi of Elarah Parties specializes in painting parties of all kinds at many different venues with creative themes and décor. She also does parties as fund raisers.

Her next fundraiser is for a new service for veterans called Warrior Strong, a group that helps former military men and women with physical and/or psychological issues.

One of the services is an adaptive workout facility for veterans who need special equipment and training, such

as amputees. Warrior Strong also offers physical therapy, free personal training sessions and both one-to-one and group mental health counseling, according to the Warrior Strong website. It also provides workshops for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a place and opportunities for networking and socialization.

Warrior Strong has two satellite gyms, one in Morris Plains and the other in Scranton, Pa. Both are in regular gyms. Lahmidi said the group is raising money for its own facilities.

The proceeds from the painting event, which will be Friday, Oct. 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will go toward this goal.

The charge will be $40 each.

Attendees will receive a canvas and paints are provided.

The Episcopal Church of the Messiah on Route 24 between Chester Borough and Long Valley is the venue. Rev. Margaret

Otterbein, rector of Messiah said the church offered use of the building but isn’t directly involved in Warrior Strong. The church offers many outreach endeavors, including the Senior Resource Center for Washington Township and a thrift shop.

Lahmidi became involved through Dawn Pensack, an EFT practitioner who often works with veterans. EFT stands for emotional freedom techniques, she said. According to its website, EFT is a psychological acupressure technique

based on the body’s energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture. Rather than needles, the therapist uses his or her fingertips to tap on the patient’s body while asking the patient to think about specific problems and voice positive affirmations. Patients are also taught to perform acupressure on themselves.

Not All Headaches Are Created Equal

Blood Screenings For Adults, Seniors

he Mt. Olive Township Health Department plans to offer blood screening tests Oct. 19 for adults and senior citizens.

The cost for the screenings is $25 for adults aged 18 through 59; and $12 for seniors ages

60 and up.

The blood test is a broad screening tool to test for various chemical concentrations in the blood, including glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium, total protein, iron, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Additional blood

tests are available for additional cost.

They include: Lyme Antibody Screen, $26; CRP and Homocysteine, $38; Hemoglobin A1-C to monitor glucose control, $23; Prostate Specific Antigen, $26.

Netcong Church Members Help Repair A Home For Habitat For Humanity

By Elsie Walker s people look back on the summer, many tend to think of those days where they got to relax and have fun. However, for Chuck Ranslear of Hopatcong, a memorable summer experience involved working with others on house repairs.

Ranslear and other members of the Stanhope United Methodist Men’s group and family members, took out a summer Saturday to work on a house in Andover for Habitat for Humanity.

The Netcong church’s men’s group looks for outreach opportunities to help the community. Coincidently, one of its long-standing projects is an annual jazz pancake breakfast with the proceeds going to help in the restoration of homes damaged by Super Storm Sandy. In looking for an outreach

this summer, Habitat for Humanity was suggested and the group reached out to the organization and got a project.

Tasks included things such as mixing mortar used to level a floor, installing insulation, and removing rotted wood from a deck and replacing it with treated wood. The work was explained to the group by a project foreman. Ranslear noted that most of those on the work team had never done that type of work. However, that did not damper the 13-person group’s drive or enthusiasm.

Christina and Rick Munoz of Hopatcong were part of that project team. Christina Munoz worked on cleaning and reorganizing the garage, sweeping up dust, collecting construction debris and cleaning up around the yard site. Meanwhile, Rick Munoz worked on a kitchen

The screening includes a Thin-Prep Pat test, cervical and pelvic exam, manual breast exam and referral for a discounted mammogram.

However, being new to the church, Jennifer Cusack thought this project would be a good chance to get to know other parishioners. Jack Cusack worked on the crew which was handling the kitchen floor.

“My son, Jack, and I truly enjoy volunteering together and are excited to participate in another build soon,” she said. “You leave the day tired and sweaty, but with a heart full of pride that you did something good for the world.”

Her sentiments were echoed by Ranslear who looks forward to working again with his fellow church members: “I believe we each left that site feeling closer and having newfound respect for each other. I am proud of what we accomplished that Saturday. I hope we have made a difference to a family in need.”

Painting, College Prep, Literary Journeys At Mt. Olive Library

n evening of painting, college application seminars and the mystery of Jack the Ripper are all programs on tap at the Mt. Olive Public Library in the coming weeks.

“Painting with Dorothy” will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Gathering Room. Participants will make great art and paint like the masters.

On Oct. 13, participants will enter into the lives and thoughts of literary legends Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker through dramatically read passages from their famous works.

Also, on Oct. 13, The Mt. Olive Public Library will host a “College Application Process Seminar” at 1 p.m. in the Gathering Room.

The free seminar will be presented by Paul Kelly, private guidance counselor from College Edge Counseling Services.

He will discuss SAT/ACT preparation, college essays, resume

building, college interview practice and he will offer assistance with scholarship research.

Non Profit Shelter Unleashes Common Sense Care To Animals

By Cheryl Conway hanks to Common Sense for Animals, many more dogs and cats are living the dream with families to care for them.

Last year alone, Common Sense for Animals out of Stewartsville adopted and found homes for more than 1,300 animals.

Common Sense for Animals is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit no-kill shelter organization founded in 1990 by Dr. Robert R. Blease, a veterinarian for the past 52 years. The only shelter facility in Warren County, Blease’s property sits on 12 acres “and so does my home and animal hospital,” he says.

Twenty eight years ago Blease says he realized “I was alarmed at how people were looking at animals including food animals. They thought hamburger came from Styrofoam not cows, and were being led to dislike farmers. I wanted to educate people how animals fell into our lives. You love your dog but we eat animals. They are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity.”

According to its website: “Our goal is to bring together people who share certain common sense or fundamental principles regarding our heritage, and freedom of choice regarding food producing animals, companion pets, wildlife, research animals and the environment. We are not animal rightists. Instead Common Sense for Animals is committed to the entitlement of all animals to respect and dignity throughout their entire lives. We work to improve every area of human/animal relationships through education and community service.”

As a service and educational organization, Common Sense for Animals provides care to animals by finding homes to adopt and foster animals such as dogs, puppies, cats, kittens as well as some reptiles like rabbits and even rats.

He says the majority of the animals he brings to the shelter come from the south.

According to statistics, he says three to five million animals get euthanized every year in this country.

“We are a private no kill shelter,” he explains on a mission to saving these animals from euthanization. “We work with animal control,” mainly in Warren Coun-

ty, taking in animals that are injured and homeless with the goal of returning a fair amount to their owners with the majority spayed and neutered.

“A lot of puppies used to be euthanized,” he says. “We have people begging us to take them from the south.”

Despite of all the services this non-profit organization provides, Blease says “We get no funding from the government. They don’t have programs for shelters especially those with no kill. We take animals in from animal control or up from the south. We find them a home unless they have a terminal disease or danger to the public.”

Currently at his shelter, Blease has 65 dogs and puppies, a lot requiring fostering because they are too young to adopt yet; 100 cats ready for adoption; some rabbits, ferrets and birds.

Blease says his shelter does not take in injured deer, fawn or wildlife but will send them to a licensed rehabber.

He says, “injured deer are very dangerous; I saw somebody killed by a deer.” As a man was about to kill an injured deer who was suffering, the deer flicked at the man’s feet and punctured his juggler vein.

In addition to service, Common Sense for Animals educates others about the dangers of handling wildlife, why to avoid certain situations and protect oneself from rabies.

He visits schools to talk to children “about true animal welfare and we bring groups in. A lot of people have the wrong idea on what is good for animals.”

He explains: “If you are a fisherman obey the laws; release what you catch if you don’t plan to eat it. With hunting, eat what you hunt; don’t be a trophy hunter.

“Don’t mess if you see an injured piece of wildlife; don’t approach it; call someone who knows what they are doing.

Don’t feed the bears; the problem bears are the ones people interact with. Nobody wants to shoot a bear, but they’ve gotten out of control in neighborhoods.”

Keeping the environment clean is also important.

“What’s good for the wildlife is a clean environment and it’s also good for people,” such as air quality which can cause cancer; polluted beaches because of sewage; dumped soda cans which can cut an

animal’s neck.

Common Sense For Animals also reaches out to veterans with animals, or anyone who cannot afford to feed their animal “We always try to help. We share the wealth with anyone who can’t feed animals. We offer to help a veteran acquire an animal; we have adoption fees so we offer reduced fees,” to veterans wanting an animal for emotional support.

“When we tell them there’s no charge, they give a donation,” Blease says.

As a non-profit, Common Sense for Animals is always looking for financial donations and items. Current needs include canned cat food, cleaning supplies and towels.

“When you feed 100 cans a day that’s a lot of cat food in a month,” Blease says of its greatest need, in addition to more volunteers to help clean cat cages and walk the dogs.

“Walking the dogs is very important,” he says, “as it socializes them back into society.”

Fundraising events are held throughout the year to help bring in money. The next event is set for Sept. 23 with a 5K Run & Walk at Meadow Breeze Park in Washington; 9 a.m. to run; 11 a.m. to walk. Chamber’s Women In Business Session Hosts Program On Sandwich Generation

Speakers were Wendy Long of St. Clare’s, estate attorney Sandra Woolcock and Melissa Nichols of Heath Village.

“You need to become an expert on parents and children and the care industry,” Nichols said. “Make a list of your top concerns,” she added. Problems children might have whether drugs or just sketchy friends still have to be dealt with even when aging parents are presenting their own sets of challenges.

She also encouraged the chamber members to make sure they are taking care of themselves while caring for children and parents. Among the handouts she brought was one listing emotional, spiritual, social, physical, intellectual and occupational needs that caregivers must be concerned with.

“Most people want to age in place,” Nichols said. Also, she added, many people can’t afford to do anything else.

Some of the questions that should be addressed include driving and loneliness.

Often many of a senior’s friends are gone.

Sometimes, the caregiver notices things that don’t come up in conversation. Bruises may indicate a fall, a stack of unpaid bills or a recent weight gain or loss or a home not as neat as before can be indicators of something wrong, Nichols said.

Sometimes, there is no way for a senior to remain at home and the caregiver must assist the senior in choosing the right place.

Wendy Long has made a career out of helping seniors and their caregivers make choices.

Starting the conversation early helps, she pointed out. The families must know exactly what resources exist and what is the best way to handle money.

She noted sometimes paying for transportation can be worth the expense so the caregiver doesn’t have to take off work.

Often legal assistance is necessary and that’s where Sandra Woolcock and other attorneys come in.

“You’ve got to be careful what you do with your assets,” she said. A lawyer can determine whether it is the best course of action to transfer an asset while the senior is still living. Families can also benefit from paperwork being overseen by an attorney,

such as a health care directive or will.

Chamber President Harry Brown pointed out children should keep an eye on their surviving parent after the spouse dies. Others talked about the added burden of having a child with special needs while caring for an elderly parent.

The vigil is open to the public, says Uhrmann. “Spectators may come and go as they please. The only thing we ask is that a solemn decorum is maintained.”

Uhrmann explains: “Throughout the 24 hour vigil, placement of memorial wreaths and luminaries will be ongoing. Luminaries will be available for purchase and can be set by visitors. The changing of service members standing watch will happen every 30 minutes. It is a formal ceremony.”

Donation To Animals Visitors are also being asked to bring a donation for a non-profit no-kill shelter organization, Common Sense For Animals in Stewartsville, which provides care to animals requiring adoption and fostering.

“Visitors who bring a donation for Common Sense for Animals will receive a free Red Poppy Pin in honor of One life lived, One life lost,” explains Uhrmann.

Uhrmann decided to include the animal donation to recognize all the animals that are also MIA. “One of the reasons I tied this in is because hundreds of thousands of dogs too have not returned,” she says. “I also felt that since people have crazy schedules and because we would have someone available for 24 hours this would be an excellent opportunity to collect items for CSA.” As an animal lover herself, Uhrmann says the AVM “recently partnered with CSA this summer. We have provided two substantial donations and would like to continue to show our support. We are

supporting CSA because of their involvement with veterans. And, because we love animals!”

The CSA is in “desperate need of financial donations,” food particularly cans of cat food, and other items on their list such as towels, cleaning supplies and volunteers.

While CSA takes care of animals, it is also mindful of veterans, she says.

CSA provides therapy dogs for veterans at a discounted price and also helps to provide food and care to their animals.

“The POW/MIA REMEMBRANCE WALL acknowledges / links PTSD with POW as those who suffer of PTSD are in a way prisoners of war,” she explains, hence why therapy dogs come in handy to these veterans.

“We will set up a specific in-take tent,” says Uhrmann to collect donations for CSA. “I’ll do anything to help them. It was heart breaking to see all those precious animals.”

Wall To Feature Artist’s Mural “We have a world renowned artist who has offered to paint a mural on the Remembrance Wall pro-bono,” says Uhrmann. “He will design a mural that will make it look like you are looking inside of a blown out building.”

Israeli artist Doron Viner from Worldwide Murals was planning to begin his work on the wall on Sept. 7 to be completed by its unveiling at the POW/MIA Vigil on Sept. 21.

“I was seeking something very memorable for the wall,” says Uhrmann. “A war torn building, while ok, it didn’t send the message I was seeking. So, I began looking for a muralist on line. I had several artists wanting to do the work, however, the passion in which Doron expressed peaked my

interest. Lest did I know of his popularity around the world.”

Requiring lots of research and accuracy, “the mural will be in three panels or sections, explains Uhrmann. “Each section will replicate a prison cell.

The first panel will feature a captured warrior. The second cell or freedom cell will represent everlasting life and hope and the third cell will feature a warrior reflecting what he left behind.”

The poppy’s will still be incorporated into the project, she says, however, “since we have decided to go with the mural, the poppies will run along ground at the base of the wall.”

The POW/MIA Remembrance Wall will provide “our service men and woman a formal ceremonial ground to not only honor POW/MIA warriors, but a place to hold a vigil for when a brother in arms pass,” says Uhrmann.

While the rendering will be a surprise at the unveiling, Uhrmann provides some insight into what she has in mind for the mural.

“The face of the POW will be the likeness of a Morris County veteran who was captured by the Germans,” says Uhrmann. “I had met him several years ago. He had not spoken about his capture and torture until we spoke. His children were hardly aware of his story. His wife and I shared several long and meaningful talks after his passing. She said that once her husband had broke silence, it was his desire to share the details of

his demise with as many people as he could so that part of history could be accurately passed on and remembered.

“I would say that I was very fortunate to have met him,” says Uhrmann. “One of his final wishes was that people would remember. I visited the family to seek their permission to use the features of their beloved’s face, as the face of POW warrior that will be painted in the mural; mentioning what he told me years ago. They agreed that would be something he would have wanted...so the image of the prisoner will have special meaning and ties to Morris County.”

Through 100 percent donations and her own financial means, Urhmann and the AVM have developed a memorial site in Mt. Olive with ceremonial grounds to honor, commemorate and reflect upon all those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and to even learn about American history.

She is most appreciative of Viner’s recent gesture.

“I was absolutely shocked and grateful at the same time,” says Uhrmann to create the mural. “Took me time to realize that he was offering his gift as a goodwill offering. I have no doubt that God brought us together. I have enjoyed working with Doron - he is an amazingly gifted person.”

Next to come with the AVM will be The Prayer Garden.

“This will be done in the spring and will involve families of fallen warriors,” she says.

Women At Work: How Women’s Clubs Contribute To Local Communities

By Joyce Corey omen’s clubs aren’t just social gatherings; they are groups of women who view activism on the community, state, and national level as a way to improve the world, one project at a time. Each member has a vision of change and they collectively roll up their sleeves, put on their hiking boots, or don a rain slicker, depending on the type of community project in which they are engaging.

“Founded in 1894, the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC (NJSFWC), a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), provides opportunities for education, leadership training, and community service through participation in local clubs, enabling members to make a difference in the lives of others, one project at a time. Women At Work... continued from page 26 quarrying was taking place along the cliffs, which threatened their destruction. The formation of the Interstate Park Commission preserved the cliffs and shorefront by acquiring land along the Palisades.

The NJSFWC has supported the military through their contributory efforts. In 1941, they purchased six ambulance planes to support the war effort. In 1961, Operation Cookie/Candy was started when 900 two-pound boxes of homemade cookies were mailed to service personnel stationed in Germany and Iceland during the Christmas holiday. Many clubs still participate in this project each year, sending cookies to veterans and nursing homes, among other locations.

On the education front, NJSFWC empowers women.

They founded NJ College for

Women, now called Douglass Residential College, in 1912. To date, the NJSFWC has donated more than $1 million to Douglass in the form of scholarships, fellowships, and donations for buildings.

In 1962, their first Special State Project was created. Every two years, with a new administration, the clubs select a project and jointly fundraise and support a common goal during that time period. Past organizations that have received the help of these women’s groups include Canine Companions for Independence CCI, Autism NJ, NAMI National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Prevent Child Abuse NJ. The 2018-20 project is CASA NJ, Court Appointed Special Advocates.

In fact, research published in “Acta Paediatrica” shows an association between kids who eat fish at least once a week and better grades.

Down Home Apple Pie Popcorn Yield: 10 cups 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups popped popcorn 1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 cup toffee bits Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir.

Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to

About a year ago, the 90-year old navy veteran sought a free consultation from Goldberg for much needed dental work and in March 2018 Krauss’s treatment was complete. From the

he was telling us this, his upper denture was literally falling down and his lower denture was sliding all over.”

Without any dental coverage, according the work that needed to be done, Goldberg offered to provide all services at no cost to Krauss.

“I’m not a clinic, I’m not the VA,” Goldberg maintains, but this case was one where he knew he had do something to help this man.

“He desperately needed the care, deserved it, but simply couldn’t afford it,” says Goldberg, who has helped out other patients before when it came to finances but “on a much smaller scale, and not on a regular basis. The VA couldn’t help him, he couldn’t eat properly, and he was very close to having nerves exposed that could cause him a great deal of pain. He has given his service to our country

and he’s a kind and thoughtful person. He touched each and every person in our office, too.”

With his own practice in Roxbury for the past seven years and 16 years at his previous practice, Goldberg says “what separates us from other offices is what our mantra states: “Experience, compassion and quality.” We take our time with patients, listen to their concerns and treat them with respect.

Meet Leonard Krauss Born on June 26, 1928, in Kearney, Krauss grew up in Bergen County’s North Arlington where he played football for his high school team. During one of the games he played in the freezing rain and wound up in the hospital for two weeks after coming down with a 104 degree fever, he recalls.

He played end, which it was called back then, and was required to play entire games, and with the equipment at that time, there was no staying dry.

“The equipment that we had back then did not have rubber padding,” he says, but instead “had cotton padding. When you play football in inclement weather those paddings got wet.”

Unlike football today, in which one team plays offense and another set of players play defense, “When we played we had one team. You played offense and defense and you played the whole game in freezing rain and your padding got wet. You got a chill, ended up in the hospital.”

To treat his infection, Krauss was given one of the first anti-infection medications made which dates back to the 1940’s.

“It’s a long time ago,” he says, “this particular medicine was not top notch. When I got back to school my hair started to fall out and I started to get cavities that I never had before.”

While his parents no longer allowed him to play football, he was allowed to make his own decisions once he became an adult, like join the Navy.

“In the beginning I had to try hard to convince them to play football,” he says.

“When you are young you don’t look at experiences but your parents do, so they said ‘no more football.’”

They would not let him enlist in the service at the onset of WWII. “When WWII broke out I was in the eighth grade, junior high,” he explains. “The years passed, all of a sudden I was 17 and war was still on. Some of my classmates went into the service. I went to my dad and said ‘you need to sign permission.’ I said ‘I need your permission to go into the service.’ He said ‘no I’m not signing for you to go into the service.’”

While his father, Ike, served in the army during WWI, “he didn’t want me to sign up for anything; ‘when you are 18 that’s up to you,’ which is what I did. I was 19 or 20 years old, I was out on my own so he didn’t give

me a hard time. He said I was very proud of you.”

From 1948 to 1952 Krauss served in the Navy as an air traffic controller.

“The Korean War hadn’t started yet,” he says, so there was no involvement in military services at the time “but they were sending military assistance to the Korean Army. I wanted to make sure I served in the navy; l enlisted.

During the Korean War Krauss served on a ship assigned to the seventh fleet and operated in the Mediterranean area, he explains.

“It was a show of force,” he says. “The higher reps and military wanted to make sure we were recognized all over the world, Mediterranean included.”

While all was going according to plan, Krauss’ teeth were not holding up while on the ship, a condition he blames on the infection he got while in high school.

When he enlisted in the navy he says his “teeth were acceptable,” but once in the Navy his teeth were not.

“The dentist said ‘what we could do is give you a denture.’ The dentist said ‘it’s a matter of time, the teeth are not going to last much longer.’ I would put a Band-Aid on continued on page 39

The Parent’s Corner Supporting Child’s Learning: Infants Through School Age

P

arents sometimes feel pressured to ensure that their children are learning as much as possible so as to be ready to begin formal schooling, to do well in school, and to ultimately be prepared to succeed in life. In a most challenging role being a parent carries a responsibility to support a child’s development and learning from the moment the child is born. How can one sort through all the advice given by relatives, friends, social and other media, and others about what is really important for each individual child?

Take a look at what affects learning and some developmental issues. A child’s physical and emotional state can greatly affect the child’s ability and willingness to learn. Being tired, hungry, or sick are conditions which do not favor learning new skills. Also, if a child is upset about something, he/she is not in the best state to learn.

It’s essential for us as parents to “tune in” to what’s going on with our child in these areas.

One must be attentive to good nutrition, a well balanced diet, and the importance of getting adequate sleep every night.

When a child is frustrated or concerned about something, it is a good strategy to acknowledge the child’s feelings and help him/her solve a problem by talking about it; to goes a long way when a parent takes the time to help a child consider what options might be open to move to resolving an issue in a mutually satisfactory manner.

Motivation is another factor which affects learning. Young children are naturally curious and are motivated to explore in order to learn more about their world. This inner drive to act is very strong. When a child experiences success with his/her interactions with people and in handling situations, motivation

can increase. Unfortunately, if a child’s efforts to explore and understand meet with negative reactions, motivation can decrease. The most powerful motivators are social ones (e.g. getting attention). To support a child’s learning, one wants to encourage and comment on specific positive progress and to build on small, positive steps in the right direction.

Second, children (especially young children) learn through their senses. Most children have a preferred way of getting their best information. Some children are visual learners, focusing primarily on the visual aspects of their environment; these children pay particular attention to visual details such as colors, shapes, and sizes.

Other children are auditory learners; words and sounds in the environment stand out.

Music is a natural teacher for children, especially for auditory learners. Tactile learners like to touch and manipulate objects in their world, concentrating on the texture, temperature, and other factors.

Carefully observing a child to find out how he/she prefers to learn can help parents work with their child.

Research has shown that children learn more during the first six years of life than they will during the entire rest of their life. Numerous strategies are abounding to support child’s optimal growth, development, and learning during the infant, toddler, and preschool years.

Much of the daily schedule for infants and toddlers revolves around routines: sleeping, eating, diapering or toileting, arrival and departure from child care, story time and others. One of the most important things about routines is that, when routines are consistent, they have tremendous

positive value for children. It is comforting to children to know what to expect, what will happen during the day and to trust that it will be the same from day to day. Routines help to regulate behavior when they are consistent. They also reduce stress and offer opportunities to share feelings, thereby enhancing social development.

Parents facilitate their child’s learning during infancy and toddlerhood when they try to be as consistent as possible.

Talking with a child about what will happen during the day, what they are going to do, and what will come next all help support this consistency and reinforce learning. Talking with a child frequently, expanding vocalizations of infants, giving infants and toddlers the words to reflect what they are trying to communicate, plays an im-

Preschoolers also thrive on consistency. Like infants and toddlers, Preschoolers are egocentric: they believe that the world centers around themselves. This egocentricity is perfectly normal at these ages. Preschoolers also like daily routines to which they can look forward. The routines provide opportunities to learn new skills and to refine existing skills. Parents are wise to remember that “play is the work of children.” Through play, children learn to plan and organize what they will do, to engage in tasks such as sorting, classifying, problem-solving, negotiating with peers, imagining, creating, developing physical skills, increasing their vocabulary, observing, practicing,

experimenting, making choices, and concentrating. Aren’t these the skills that are needed throughout one’s life?

Once children enter formal schooling, from kindergarten on up, how can parents continue to support learning? With the Core Curriculum, children are expected to listen and learn at an accelerated pace.

Realizing this, it is imperative for parents to find out as much as possible about the curriculum and the school’s expectations at events such as Back to School Night, during teacher/ child conferences, and at other school sponsored events during which various aspects of the curriculum are addressed.

Ask a child to bring home the textbook if he/she needs assistance in subjects like math to see how the subject matter is being taught and refresh memories about the skill or subject.

Review notes, study sheets,

and other available information to help.

As with younger children, school age children also need that consistency. One of the areas of particular concern is with homework. Having a designated time and place to do homework which is free of distractions so a child can concentrate on the work helps tremendously. If a child has a lot of homework, it’s important to plan breaks and snacks. Sometimes children need guidance in breaking down large projects or assignments into smaller, more realistic segments: planning what will be completed at certain times, so eventually the project will be done completely and on time. Working with a child to balance the academic and recreational demands knowing that all areas of development are important is well worth the effort. Give a child specific feedback regard-

ing their strengths and specific areas of challenge.

Keep in mind that all parents and their children are human and that it’s okay and even advantageous at times to “learn the hard way.” It can be challenging to a parent to resist the temptation to shield a child from making mistakes. However, as long as health and safety are not jeopardized, it can be very effective to allow a child to learn by trial and error. Also remember that, whenever anyone tries to learn something new, practice and repetition is needed before that skill is mastered so make sure to be encouraging. Giving credit for effort will enable a child to be more responsive to feedback in the future.

“The Navy dentists are not the greatest in the world,” says Krauss. “They were looking for the easiest way to take care of the situation.”

Dentures were put in but they did not last. “It lasted some time before I had to have it replaced,” says Krauss. “If you would’ve gone today, he probably would’ve given you a partial denture. At the time in the Navy, easiest way out and cheapest way, you are at their mercy because you belong to them.”

After four years, Krauss was honorably discharged in 1952.

“There were things I wanted to do like get married and start school,” says Krauss.

“I’m no hero, I’m a vet,” says Krauss. “I did my job, I’m very proud of what I did. I served on a warship but I’m not a hero. I’m just like any other vet. I never proposed to be other than a sailor doing my job.”

He married Mildred Donahue in July 1953, started school at Seton Hall University and had two twin boys Keith and Kevin.

“We were busy,” he says. They went onto have three more kids, a daughter Maribeth, and two more sons William ‘Liam’ and Eric.

He worked in industrial sales for 30 years and just retired six years ago from his parttime job as a distributor of school busses.

“I was one of the drivers,” he says. Mildred died 18 years ago and Krauss lived in Plainfield for ten years before moving into his son Eric’s house, in Randolph two years ago.

His seven grandkids have kept him going. His granddaughter, Kelsea in Randolph, is currently in her final year at West Point with plans to serve as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army.

Goldberg Gives Krauss A Renewed Reason To Smile “Who would have thought a piece of mail would establish a friendship between a Korean War Vet and a dentist?” Goldberg’s office describes in a write up about Krauss.

As a Veteran, Krauss received health care through the Veteran’s Administration in East Orange and Basking Ridge, but when he turned to them for dental care he was denied coverage.

“I needed some dental work,” explain Krauss, who soon came to learn that “If you don’t have 100 percent disability, you don’t get coverage. I had 75 percent disability.”

While he appreciates all of the services the VA provides to veterans like paying for his medication, his knee replacement and heart valve replacement Krauss questions why it does not provide dental care especially since “proper food and nutrition” is important to a person’s overall health.

“If you can’t consume properly, you can’t keep your health,” says Krauss. “I can’t understand for the life of me that they can’t replace dental work. Before I went to Dr. Goldberg, I went to the VA dentist department and they said you have to be 100 percent disabled. I just wanted them to check my mouth to see what I can get done. They said ‘no, you have to be 100 percent disabled.’”

He says “I had some dentures, been quite a while since they were replaced. They did not fit properly so it restricted my foods. My menu had to be on the soft side; difficulties in chewing because of the loose dentures. continued on page 40

When Krauss received an advertisement offering a free consultation for dental implants at Goldberg’s office, he decided to make an appointment.

“I knew I needed something done,” stated Krauss, “because the Veteran’s Administration was at a limit as to what they could do for me. I’ve had full dentures for the upper and lower jaws for years, and they just didn’t fit right. My digestive tract was affected, I couldn’t eat many foods, and I was simply unhappy.”

“Unhappy” is not what Dr. Goldberg and his staff ever saw from this gentleman,” Goldberg’s office tells. “Mr. Krauss has never been caught once by me or my staff in an unhappy state or mood,” Goldberg states.

“He’s always smiling, cracking jokes, telling us military stories in the most positive manner, and living life to its fullest.”

Extensive Care Needed “Mr. Krauss had a very serious dental problem,” explains Goldberg. “He presented to me with advanced bone loss in both the upper and lower jaws. We see this all

the time, so we know how to handle it. The Veteran’s Administration, as well as most dentists, are not equipped to deal with this kind of crippling situation. We are.”

A 3-D scan taken in Dr. Goldberg’s office showed nerves that were just about to be exposed, he explains.

“When this occurs, a patient has constant pain,” states Goldberg. “We were dead-set in avoiding Mr. Krauss from living with this problem. In our experience, dental implants are the most predictable method to restore his oral health, which in turn would also improve his systemic health.”

Surprised that the x-rays and “extensive” consultation was free of charge, Krauss wanted to review what the financial burden would be on him if any work were to be done.

“He went over possibilities of what we can do,” explains Krauss, “to see if I was in agreement with that.” He says prior to that he discussed few things like how he was a Veteran and the ship he was on and came to realize how Goldberg was on the same ship when he was in San Diego.

“I said ‘that ship was our sister ship,’” says Krauss.

Goldberg’s office explains, “We can al-

ways ballpark a fee for a patient, but its difficult to get a real accurate number until we go through some preliminary, diagnostic steps. I told Mr. Krauss to let us do this over five appointments, and there wouldn’t be any fee to him until we finished them and he accepted treatment. This sounded reasonable to him, so we proceeded.”

It was during these appointments that the relationship bloomed and Goldberg and his staff looked forward to spending time with Krauss, even extending appointments to enjoy each other’s company, they say.

When they learned how Krauss “had very little financial backing for the dental care” and “what he has done for our country,” they made their decision.

“What this man has done for our country is outstanding, and should be applauded,” states Goldberg. “He is also a kind and tremendous human being,” while his staff fully agreed. “We decided to take care of his dental needs pro-bono.”

Krauss’ reaction: “I looked at him and said ‘You can’t do that doc; you can do it for a reduced rate.’”

continued from page 40 fession” and that ‘I was honored to do some work for you to get your mouth squared away.’ He said ‘it’s going to be a privilege.’”

With this offer, Goldberg had asked Krauss to participate in a TV promotion to feature his story, so he agreed.

The plan was to place four implants into the lower jaw and attach non-removable teeth to those implants, Goldberg explains. For the upper jaw, a brand new denture was fabricated.

The procedure was done in a manner called, “guided surgery,” a guide is fabricated from 3-D technology using specialized software in order to place implants into precise locations with minimal surgery.

“I decided to use a guided technique for Mr. Krauss due to some of his medical conditions and medications,” Goldberg explains. “He suffers from atrial

fibrillation, and therefore he is on blood thinners. I wanted to minimize the amount of bleeding, and avoiding certain types of Novocain that could aggravate the A-fib. People oftentimes think age is a factor, but it really isn’t. It’s the health of the patient.”

The entire experience is one that Krauss will always cherish.

“The staff in his office are really terrific people,” says Krauss.

“I really appreciate Dr. Goldberg and the staff and what they helped me with. I still owe a lot to Dr. Goldberg. He’s really very nice, great personality, very helpful. Fortunately I got a hold of a dentist who is something else. He did a nice job for me.”

Since his treatment was completed in March, “his world has been turned around by the procedure,” says Goldberg.

“He’s now able to eat any foods he wants, and his smile is second-to-none.”

Schools Begin In Mt. Olive

eptember 4 marked the opening day of the school year for Mt. Olive students. For Matthew Robinson, it was his first day of school in the district in 18 years – this time not as a student but as the new principal of Mt. Olive Middle School. He graduated from the district in 2001.

On the first school day of his Mt. Olive principalship, Robinson visited classrooms to speak with students and staff.

“It’s a homecoming for me and an opportunity to give back to the district that prepared me for success in life,” Robinson said. “As principal, I will work day in and day out to ensure that every student at Mt. Olive Middle School is supported and is socially and emotionally ready to learn.”

For the past two years, the veteran educator served as the superintendent at Stillwater Township School. Prior to becoming superintendent, he was Stillwater’s assistant principal. He began his career teaching fifth grade social studies and English language arts in the South Orange-Maplewood school system, and later became a content area specialist there.
