Former Mt. Olive Student Athlete, Artist Jessica Murr Creates Eye Catching Lacrosse Club Mural Poster

By Jerry Del Priore he Mount Olive Lacrosse Club used to use a gray, drab concrete stone structure as its bounce back wall for throw-and-catch practice for lacrosse players.

But John Helder, president of Mount Olive Junior Lacrosse Club, said that the club wanted something more eye-catching and enticing to help inspire players to practice that particular skill for longer stretches of time while displaying community pride.

Therefore, the club brought in 2019 Mount Olive High School graduate and up-and -coming artist Jessica Murr into the fold.

Murr, now a freshman fine arts major at the Savan-

nah University of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, is a friend and former art classmate of Lexi Helder, John Helder’s daughter.

After a few artist renderings, Murr came up with an awe-inspiring poster of two lacrosse players busting out of side-by-side skulls in a 3D style that she noted represents power and grace, with superhero-like qualities.

A self-taught graffiti writer/artist from New Jersey assisted with spray painting the empowering, breathtaking street art-like drawing onto the wall, which is located at Drakes Brook Park in Flanders.

of the team while showing Mt. Olive pride,” said Murr, an ex-two-sport high school student athlete at Mt. Olive. “I actually spent a lot of time researching different ideas and styles. I actually came up with a few designs, and people seem to like the final one.”

Helder said lacrosse players and people from other towns have had favorable reactions to the mural, giving it thumbs up praise.

“The kids are up there all the time playing and commenting how cool the wall is,” Helder said. “Visitors from other towns are always commenting about it.”

Murr grew up painting and drawing as a form of self-expression. She has decided to pursue a career in art making, studying visual effects such as prop making, including creating fake gore, of course, for TV/films for that ultimate hands-on creative experience.

player and track and field athlete in high school, get in touch with her art roots while connecting with other athletes and friends. She said it gives her a sense of accomplishment and a measure of community notoriety.

“It brought my name out,” she said. “It was a good opportunity to get my artwork out there, and support my town. It was nice

to see some of my friends out there on Instagram, and other people being positive about the mural on social media.”

While Murr loves being an artist in beautiful, sunny Savannah, she does miss her family in New Jersey and competing in sports, as she said it taught her so much about working as part of a team.

teachers, and my coaches,” Murr said. “I really miss playing sports because it was great being on a team and being competitive. It taught me so much on how to work on group art projects, which I’m doing a lot of now.”

But how does Murr feel about the mural? “I’m proud of it. As long as the people in the lacrosse program like it, I’m going to be proud of it.”

Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination.

For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- bycase basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. Supply and Demand, Hoarding, Price Gouging -- and the Coronavirus

As the saying goes, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” I would add, “and anti-price gouging legislation in times of crisis.” Yet price increases in the face of sudden shortages are an important impetus to restore supply and demand market conditions that are closer to normal.

As many of us have experienced in the past few weeks, buying toilet paper, hand sanitizer and face masks has become more difficult and more expensive.

The reason, of course, is that unusually large numbers of people are rushing to buy these and other products that might prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It’s normal for people to stock up on supplies during crises. The immediate results are empty store shelves, soon followed by higher prices.

When this happens, politicians around the globe demand an end to the price hikes. The goal is to improve consumer access to the products now in higher demand.

In New Jersey, for instance, at least 10 retailers have received warnings from the government to stop their so-called price gouging. Similarly, the French government announced that it won’t tolerate such price increases and will soon decree a price ceiling on face masks and hand sanitizers. In a move guaranteed to worsen and lengthen the shortages, French officials are even going so far as to appropriate stocks of masks. Just this week, the Department of Justice threatened to act against “bad actors” who raise prices during this time of panic. The list goes on and on.

While well-intentioned, such heavy-handed intervention is a mistake on many levels: First, the rise in prices conveys nothing more than the unusually intense surge in demand for these products. Consumers

Mark Shields value these products more now than they did just a few weeks ago, which is reflected by the higher prices.

But here’s another reality: If prices are kept artificially low, there’s little incentive for shoppers not to buy as much as they can. Of course, only those shoppers lucky enough to get to the stores first can do so. Their hoarding then leaves nothing for shoppers in line behind them.

The fact is there’s no better means of slowing the rising demand -- and, especially, reducing excessive hoarding -- than allowing the very price hikes that governments are trying to prevent.

But price hikes have another important advantage: They create the necessary incentives for entrepreneurs to shift resources toward activities that increase the supply of these goods.

The higher prices encourage higher levels of production for goods like masks and hand sanitizers, which then increases supply. Even some companies that couldn’t afford to produce these goods in the past will be prompted by high prices to now do so. The Japanese electronics giant Sharp started to use its TV factories to make surgical masks when the domestic continued on page 6

CDC: Centers for Damaged Credibility

think I’m where most sane people are on the coronavirus outbreak: -Concerned but not panicked.

-Calm but not apathetic.

-Taking reasonable precautions but remaining skeptical of what all the purportedly “best experts” here in the United States are telling us about every aspect of their belated crisis management and response (especially on their pimping of vaccine development to prevent the disease).

Here are some plain, nonhysterical facts: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is a bloated federal government agency with a long history of incompetence, fraud, secrecy, mission creep and shady alliances with both social justice causes on the left and private corporations on the big business right. The “deep state” of entrenched bureaucrats embedded in the Beltway bowels is alive and thriving at the CDC. The unelected elites who’ve occupied top offices at the public health-industrial complex are hostile to public scrutiny while clamoring for ever-ballooning budgets. Their recommendations have often been detrimental to citizens’ well-being and freedom.

And, yes, many of the scientists who work there are rabidly anti-conservative and anti-Trump.

It’s a brazen lie that President Donald Trump “slashed” CDC funding, which is being used as an excuse for the agency’s coronavirus unpreparedness. Cognitively impaired and truth-challenged Joe Biden made the claim during last week’s Democratic debate that these purported “Draconian cuts” put Americans at risk. But Trump’s budget proposal to cut some sliver of CDC fat has never been enacted, and Congress increased funding, instead.

At nearly $7 billion, CDC’s annual budget is more than 200% larger than it was two decades ago. On top of that, a shady big business lobbying group called Corporate Friends of CDC has raised hundreds of millions of supplemental dollars -- which raises serious conflict-of-interest

Tom Coburn’s fiscal audit of the agency discovered vulgar expenditures including CDC syphilis prevention funds spent to host a “safe-sex” event with a porn star, CDC HIV/AIDS prevention funds spent on a transgender beauty pageant, and $45 million in CDC funding spent on conferences featuring prostitutes, protests and beach parties.

Despite the flood of money, the agency been caught flat-footed on outbreak after outbreak. They squander untold millions on other health threats in favor of pushing gun control and nanny state hobby horses (TV violence, helmet laws, video games, anti-bullying campaigns and explicit sex education, for example). CDC has one primary job -- Disease Control -- but has managed to botch it without ever learning from past failures.

Let me remind you of some of the CDC’s long history of royal screw-ups: -The notorious 1976 swine flu vaccine scandal was catalyzed by mass hysteria whipped up by CDC junk scientists clamoring for more money; Congress obliged and nearly 45 million Americans were unnecessarily jabbed with a vaccine for a disease that had fizzled by the time the shots were ready. -In 1999, the CDC misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome

and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research.

-In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead,

Government officials (and pundits) never seem to learn (or remember) that in times of crisis, naturally rising prices are necessary to guarantee that goods, services and inputs are used to maximum social advantage.

When governments prevent price hikes, they unwittingly (SET ITAL)create(END ITAL) shortages of vital supplies. Unfortunately, such government intervention makes it harder for people to recover from disasters or, today, to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

Think about it. Without price fluctuations to provide a signal to manufacturers, how will they know by how much or how quickly they need to increase production? If prices are kept artificially low, factory owners have no way to know for sure that actual demand (and not just hoarding) has risen enough to justify a change in their production schedules. Second, if governments keep prices from adjusting upward, the additional demand for masks might not result in enough

revenue to cover the extra costs of producing and shipping more masks.

The bottom line is that by keeping prices artificially low, governments around the world encourage artificially high demand, from hoarders, for example. Necessary increases to the supply chain will also be discouraged, which results in unnecessary shortages, long lines of desperate customers, empty shelves and black markets in dark alleys.

Aren’t we better off when products are actually on the shelves and available for purchase, even if only at higher prices? When no such products are to be found, except by the politically and socially connected, ordinary citizens lose out.

apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more,” The Washington Post disclosed at the time. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices.

-In 2009, the CDC recalled 800,000 doses of swine flu vaccine for children ages 6 months to 3 years after the products manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur failed potency tests.

-In 2012, the CDC’s main building housing infectious anthrax, SARS and monkeypox gases was discovered to have been leaking deadly pathogens due to a flawed engineered airflow system.

-In 2014, the CDC’s lackadaisical response to Ebola virus gave the greenlight to Patient Zero Thomas Eric Duncan and infected medical personnel to board commercial airlines while ill -- exposing untold numbers of travelers to the deadly disease. Expensive isolation chambers that had been subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of $15 million sat buried in a Georgia warehouse.

-For the past few years, the agency has employed a fear campaign to induce Americans to get regular flu shots (formulated based on guesswork) using flawed statistics and despite international scientific conclusions that there is “no evidence” to support the CDC’s assumptions that the vaccine reduces transmission of the virus or the risk of

potentially deadly complications.

-Just this week, the Informed Consent Action Network reported astonishing results from its lawsuit against the CDC to obtain scientific documentation for the agency’s claim that “vaccines do not cause autism” -- specifically for the first seven vaccines given to your child in their first six months of life. CDC had stonewalled, and then finally produced 20 studies -- 18 of which were irrelevant to ICAN’s public records request and two of which suggest that vaccines may indeed cause autism. In other words: The CDC is lying while continuing to smear vaccine critics as “conspiracy theorists” and public health threats.

As if to underscore my point about this agency’s misdirected priorities and rank political pandering, the CDC director this week found it more urgent to condemn Republicans as racist for accurately describing the origins of the virus from Wuhan, China, than to do his job.

Informed diagnosis: The “best people” -- who have now been rewarded with more than $8.3 billion in new “emergency funding” -- are not in charge.

e Hackettstown Committee for Crime Prevention was founded in 1992 to raise funds to support the DARE program. Since 1994, it has also undertaken the operation of Teen Nights. The HCCP continues to be involved in additional activities and services including: sponsoring dances at Hackettstown Middle School, the DARE graduation and pizza parties, summer Teen Nights at the Hackettstown Community Pool, and sponsoring the annual Town Wide Yard Sale. We have also participated for several years in the Hackettstown

Community Day as well as chaperoning DARE graduates at the Hackettstown Memorial Day Parade. Our current members have worked tirelessly on this committee for twenty years or more. Garden State Yacht Club to Host Boating Safety Course and Two Open Houses

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam. All boaters are required by New Jersey law to have this certificate. The cost of $75 covers materials, the exam, and lunch.

Volunteer for Raritan Headwaters Association’s 30th annual Stream Cleanup on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, and see the difference thousands of helping hands can make! Helpers of all ages are needed, and the cleanup will be held rain or shine.

“It’s absolutely true that many hands make light work,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the nonprofit watershed watchdog. “In just three hours last year, 1,700 volunteers removed 18 tons of trash and recyclables from 46 sites in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties. They made a big impact in a very short time.”

This year, the 30th anniversary of the RHA Stream Cleanup falls only a few days before the 50th anniversary of Earth Day – a day dedicated to supporting environmental protection and celebrating clean air, water and land.

“The Stream Cleanup is in keeping with the spirit of Earth Day,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s Stream Cleanup coordinator. “Not only does it beautify local stream corridors, it also protects drinking water supplies and prevents litter from washing downstream to the Raritan Bay and Atlantic Ocean, where it

Jen Ponton: Mega Talent from Mount Olive on the Big Screen and Life in General

By Megan Roche en Ponton has a love for the stage unlike any other. She truly just loves her craft and feels blessed every day to wake up to a job she loves. The Mount Olive resident has many exciting things going on in her career, but she never forgets where she started as a member of the speech and debate team at Phillipsburg High School.

“It came to me very young, mentally. I didn’t have the resources, opportunities really started to open up for high schoolers when Glee and High School Musical became popular. People who are 10 to 15 years younger than me have much more opportunity to act in school plays. There really wasn’t any community theater and where I took lessons didn’t really do any major productions. However, through watching TV and reading books, I knew pretty much from the start that this was what I wanted to do. I did a ton of creative writing, but had it not been for the speech and debate team, I wouldn’t have had a huge outlet. With doing speech and debate, I got to compete with doing kind of a one person play every single weekend with all my friends,” Ponton

Ponton and her husband Andrew have settled in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive and her Jersey pride is loud and proud.

Ponton is truly energetic about everything she takes on in life, but her empowerment

of all women, regardless of age, race, or religion is something that is truly inspiring.

“The things that we want to address in our lives, those are the things that entertainment reflects. We, in Hollywood, need to start taking that responsibility more seriously. Real life impacts entertainment but entertainment also impacts real life and the more that we take up that responsibility of continued on page 19

Ponton will soon be heard on Apple TV’s new show, The Helpsters. The Helpsters is a show coming out of Sesame Workshop that helps to teach kids how to break down a problem and solve it using easy steps. The show uses critical thinking and pre-coding concepts to help youngsters learn important life and problem-solving skills.

“Helpsters is really exciting. It’s a new

show out of Sesame Workshop on Apple TV Plus. It uses a bunch of puppet monsters who help people solve problems. The child psychology and curriculum behind it is technically meant to develop kids brains toward learning about coding. It’s very foundational and at a building block level that kids can really pick it up quickly. The entire logic is to break things down into a step by step problem solving and that’s how coding works. The monsters help the guest of the week by showing them a step by step way and then it becomes a tangible skill of how

to solve a problem, usually by using three big steps. It’s really geared to getting kids into coding and IT and the technological field while learning real life skills,” Ponton said.

Ponton’s episode of The Helpsters will likely be released in the coming months.

She is also currently working on another Apple TV production, along with her screenwriting adventures. She is working on developing a feature film that will be shot in the next year or two and that feature will be Ponton’s first feature movie that is made.

Ponton’s acting career has taken her to many different shows. Her list includes Orange is the New Black, Dietland, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Law and Order SVU, 30 Rock, The Good Wife, Boardwalk Empire and more. Ponton recalled her time on Orange is the New Black in particular as nothing short of empowering.

“It’s a show whose leadership prioritizes female stories for sure. It’s obvious when you watch it, but they have also been very adamant about having a very diverse writers room and producers and directors. It was very much a female led set and that was my first experience where there were more women behind the camera than I was accustomed to seeing. It was empowering and lovely and the energy shifts a lot on the

set. There’s a lot less of feeling like someone is trying to muscle their way into being heard. It was a very calm and stable leadership. It really set my sights on how I want to show up in this industry and what worlds I want to be a part of. I want to be on shows that prioritize a bigger conversation and sweeping cultural change,” Ponton said.

And what does Ponton have to say to those little girls and little boys who look at her as a role model? Help someone find their best self.

“People call me an influencer, and that feels like such a silly word. I think the reality of it is that I do see myself as a role model and I’ve kind of had meaning for my whole life, just at different levels of being able to help sculpt and mold and support and guide. It’s always been there, I’ve had day jobs where I’ve been a career coach and an artistic coach for people where I hold their hands but the most important part is letting them get there on their own. It’s really become a theme of my life by helping others become their best selves and that will always be a part of me and who I am,” Ponton said.

Vetfest Presents Music and Food Trucks this May

By Megan Roche s winter comes to an end, people are itching to breakout those lawn chairs and blankets, longing for days of sunny weather and blue skies. On May 3 (raindate: May 17), head out to Roxbury’s Horseshoe Lake for a day of fun that benefits the greater community of homeless veterans.

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population. Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times.

With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

On May 3, beginning at 12:00 noon, Horseshoe Lake at Succasunna will be grooving, all for a good cause. Vetfest has the best of food trucks and talent coming together to help New Jersey’s homeless veterans. Goldberg is encouraging families to come and spend the day, with lawn chairs and blankets in tow.

“Hang out for the day, there is going to be so much there to do for kids and adults.

This is all about our veterans. The important thing is to give these vets who have given so much for us, we want to give them a great day, all while raising money to support them. To be able to give them a great afternoon, just like anyone else coming out, that’s what we ultimately want to do.” Goldberg stated proudly.

At the time this article was written, bands were still signing up to come and donate their time with a performance. Currently scheduled are The Frontiers, a Journey tribute band, A Brothers Revival, an Allman Brothers tribute band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a Motown and R&B band, The Best of the Eagles, an Eagles tribute band, and New York State of Mind, a Billy Joel tribute band.

“I’ve gotten to know so many of these veterans throughout our area. These veterans are humble people and grateful people.

All they want to do is get back on their feet, and if we can give them a little step up, a little assistance, that’s really what it’s all about. They did their job and went out and served and did everything for us, and now what I ask people to do, is just to come out and have a fun day.” Goldberg said.

Food trucks include; the Empanada Truck, Cubano X-Press, Kona Ice, Jersey Rollz, Clubhouse Dogs, Cas’s Polish Food, Thai Food Addict, Bearded One BBQ, and Wood Fired Pizza. There will also be free entertainment for the kiddies in the family with bounce houses. Tickets are on sale for early bird pricing until April 15th.

Early bird prices are $10 for adults, $6 for children, and $25 per family. Ticket pricing after April 15th are $15 for adults, $10 for children, and $35 per family.

An important part of the event, for Goldberg, is allowing children and families to meet some of the folks who benefit from those who attend. There will be plenty of veterans and veteran related organizations present on the day of the event to offer insight and information so bring as many questions as you’d like.

“My dad taught me that when you see someone in uniform, you thank them. My son is 16 and he will not see a servicemember without walking up to them and saying thank you. I wish everybody would teach their kids to respect and honor them because without them, we have nothing.”

Goldberg said.

Can’t make it to the event? Donations are always appreciated and 100% of donations go back toward helping members of the military get settled after returning from war. Overall, Goldberg just hopes that he can help as many veterans as possible.

20 Warning Signs of Stress

S

tress affects so many people and infiltrates so many parts of daily life that it can be tempting to write it off as harmless or just a normal part of being human. But the negative effects of stress are significant, and persons who can recognize that are in a good position to find healthy ways to cope with their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stress can take a considerable toll on a person’s mind and body. Chronic stress, which is a constant stress experienced over a prolonged period of time, can increase the risk of hypertension, heart attack or stroke. In addition, the APA notes that chronic stress causes the muscles in the body to be in an essentially constant state of guardedness, which can potentially contribute to tension-type headache and migraines. And these are just two of the many ways the body is adversely affected by stress, which the APA says also has been linked to problems with the gastrointestinal system, nervous system and reproductive system.

Since stress can contribute to such unpleasant and potentially life-threatening side effects, it’s important that people from all walks of life learn to recognize the warning signs of stress. The American Institute of Stress lists the following among its 50 most common signs and symptoms of stress.

1. Frequent headaches, jaw clenching or pain 2. Gritting, grinding teeth 3. Stuttering or stammering 4. Tremors, or trembling of lips or hands 5. Neck ache, back pain and/or muscle spasms 6. Light headedness, faintness and/or dizziness 7. Ringing, buzzing or “popping sounds 8. Frequent blushing or sweating 9. Cold or sweaty hands, feet 10. Dry mouth and/or problems swallowing

11. Frequent colds, infections and/or herpes sores 12. Rashes, itching, hives, and/or “goose bumps” 13. Unexplained or frequent “allergy” attacks 14. Heartburn, stomach pain and/or nausea 15. Excess belching and/or flatulence 16. Constipation, diarrhea, loss of control 17. Difficulty breathing and/or frequent sighing

18. Sudden attacks of life-threatening panic 19. Chest pain, palpitations and/or rapid pulse 20. Frequent urination Stress is a part of daily life. Learning to recognize signs of stress can help people overcome it and reduce their risk for various conditions.

Finding Home Among Buttons

By Melanie DeStefano n her room at the House of the Good Shepherd retirement community in Hackettstown, Marie Harrigan sat combing through a tin full of buttons.

She paused sometimes, holding a particular button up, feeling it in her hands for an extra moment and seeing it – really seeing it.

“Do you remember them?” asked her daughter, Maura, tentatively. Maura thought she had seen a spark of recog-

nition but didn’t want to get her hopes up.

“Yes,” said Marie enthusiastically.

“Really?” asked Maura, a knot forming in her throat.

“Sure I am,” responded her mother.

Maura could only express her joy through tears.

Marie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s more than a decade ago. She has all but forgotten her life after childhood.

“It’s difficult triggering her memory,” said Maura, “but it seems she remembers

She remembers her mother as a loving caretaker whose phenomenal cooking inspired her daughter to attend culinary school. Seeing her mother now struggling to make sense of the world is emotional and difficult to process.

“Mom barely speaks now and when she does, it is difficult understanding her,” she said. “I know she thinks she is making sense and telling a good story, but her words are merely chatter, no real words come out.

I smile and listen, nod my head, and pretend I understand her.”

It’s rare that she speaks clearly and cohesively of the past. Maura never knows what will trigger it. This day, it was buttons. But, then again, they weren’t just any buttons.

The youngest of the four, Maura found ways to occupy herself in the bustling house. She had her favorites and has vivid memories of three button sets in particular, which were on their original cardstock and still marked by price tags from the old W.T. Grant department store

While laws vary depending on where nurses work, many nurses must have their licenses renewed at certain intervals. State boards of nursing, sometimes referred to as “BONs,” were established to oversee and assure the safe practice of nursing in an effort to protect the public’s health. Part of the responsibilities of a BON is to evaluate licensure applications, and some BONs, depending on the state laws, will handle license renewals as well.

The goal of license renewals is to ensure licensed nurses are up to date on the latest best practices and procedures. In addition, nurses who have not practiced in some time but want to return to practicing may need to take a refresher course to ensure they can still serve as competent nurses. In states where renewals are required, nurses who continue to practice without renewing their licenses may be subject to discipline. Nurses are urged to stay abreast of the licensing laws where they practice and to contact their BON if they have any questions about the licensure process.

Passion for Dance Brings Back Childhood Memories for Hackettstown Business Partners

By Megan Roche here is nothing quite as exciting as finding your true passion in life. What could be better? Maybe finding that passion and sharing it with one of your best friends since childhood. For Ashley Feyrer and Alexandra Thorpe, that’s exactly what their lives have become. The two danced together at North Jersey School of Dance Arts in Hackettstown as they were growing up and have recently taken over the studio together as co-owners.

Feyrer, from Long Valley, and Thorpe, from Oxford, began dancing at NJSDA back in kindergarten and first grade. As many friendships often start, Feyrer and Thorpe were close competitors and as a result, didn’t like each other. It wasn’t until Feyrer was cast in a role that Thorpe really wanted and they were forced to take classes together that they found eachother as a friend.

“Ashley was almost always a level behind because I’m a year older,” Thorpe explained. “One year, Ashley got cast as a lead and I was so upset. I was devastated and kept asking myself ‘how did she get the part over me when I dance at a higher level?’ and it really came down to me being

too tall for the part and Ashley was an actress. After that year that she had the lead, we became inseparable.”

Parting ways for college was hard on both of them. Feyrer headed off to Point Park University in Pittsburgh and Thorpe headed off to Butler University in Indianapolis after high school. The two would often reunite and teach at NJSDA during the summer months while home from college.

While Thorpe studied dance pedagogy, Feyrer also studied dance but found herself sidelined due to an intense back injury.

After coming home to Long Valley to rehab her back, Feyrer was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

“The funny thing is that when I started dealing with all the medical stuff and after being diagnosed with MS, a lot of the lessons I learned in dance class almost helped me get through all the tough times. I actually think it’s kind of funny how dance has almost prepared me to handle this on a daily basis. It gets frustrating and it’s not easy, but I find that positive thinking helps so much. I have had to find my ‘whys’. Who do I keep pushing through for? My students inspire me, they all play big roles in keeping

me positive and moving forward. Your body can handle more than you realize. It’s just one of those things with life, that I have this disease, but why would I let it stop me from doing what I truly love?” Feyrer said.

A diagnosis of MS would almost likely stop anyone in their tracks, but not Ash-

ley. Ashley graduated from Point Park and came home to teach at her native NJSDA for years. When the former studio owner was considering retirement, she approached both Ashley and Alexandra about taking over the studio. continued on page 30

Councilman John Ferrante Truly Cares About Mount Olive

By Steve Sears 3-year-old Mount Olive Township Councilman John Ferrante, who has lived in the Pershing Estates of Budd Lake for 13 years, has a deep fondness for the land he currently calls “home.”

“I love the sense of community,” he says.

Ferrante, a Republican, has served on the Township Council since 2011, when he was appointed to fill a vacant council seat when then Mayor-elect Rob Greenbaum ascended to the top helm. Ferrante has since won reelection twice, and his second full term ends Dec. 31, 2021.

Ferrante and his wife, Lynn, celebrate wedding anniversary #15 this month. The couple are parents to a 13-yearold daughter named Angelina, and two sons, Nicholas (10) and Joseph (7).

For Ferrante, who is employed with MetLife Investment Management in Whippany, his interest in getting involved with the Town Council began while he was living briefly in Hopatcong. He explains. “I lived near my grandfather. One of his biggest complaints was that there weren’t enough lights on his street. One day while visiting him, I noticed that he had a utility pole outside of his home. I had reached out to one of the Hopatcong councilmen that I had met while I was on the Knights of Columbus in Hopatcong. He had walked me through the process of inquiring about adding a streetlight to the utility pole.” A few months later, his Grandfather ecstatically called him to report that the electric company had just installed a light on that very pole.

“Through several conversations with the Hopatcong councilman, (it) got me really thinking about wanting to get involved in the community. I had moved to Budd Lake short-

ly thereafter, and later met current council president Joe Nicastro. We both had similar interests in getting involved within the community and decided to run together. We have been there together ever since.”

While serving Mount Olive, Ferrante is proud to state that Mayor Greenbaum, he and his fellow Council members have been able to sustain a zero increase in municipal taxes. “This is quite an accomplishment considering the challenges of battling an uncertain economy at times, growing community, and increase in costs to run a township of Mount Olive’s size.”

The above being said, Ferrante knows there is work to be done, especially in his own backyard. “I would love to see continued improvements made in the Budd Lake area.

If you ever look at the historic photos of Budd Lake, it was once a highly desired vacation destination. I would love to see the lake return to its glory again. We need to overcome some of the challenges of working with the state in regard to redeveloping the area, as well as the latest challenge of combating Harmful Algae Bloom which is not just unique to Budd Lake. We have made some strides with dealing with HAB, but more needs to be done to ensure the safety of our residents and the wildlife at the lake.”

Among his other involvements in the township are being the council liaison to the Environment Committee, Library Board, and Budd Lake Association. “I am also the Treasurer of the Mount Olive Soccer Club, Head Coach of the 2012 Boys Travel team, past Mount Olive Baseball Coach, member of the Saint Jude’s Parish and Saint Jude’s Knights of Columbus,” he says.

Ashley and I had talked about owning a studio for years and it was just a lifelong dream come true. It really produced a nervous excited feeling but the support from the NJSDA families was a beautiful thing. It’s not an easy thing to own your own business, but when you do it with someone that you can lean on like Ashley, it’s a wonderful thing.” Thorpe said.

The two have been at the helm of North Jersey School of Dance Arts since June of 2018. In between both of their busy personal lives, their passion for dance and their students is still the most important thing in

their hearts and on their minds.

“You see their love for dance and for the art form and it’s an indescribable feeling.

Your kids end up inspiring you a little bit. It’s really rewarding to see the kids grow year after year. To see their progress, not only in dance but in life in general. You really form a relationship with your kids, and you want to see them succeed,” Feyrer explained.

By Henry M. Holden he Knights of Columbus is a global fraternal service organization for Catholic men. The organization was founded in 1882 as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States.

“Father Michael J. McGivney, a young assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT., saw the discrimination and formed a group of Catholic men and Catholic families who would help each other since no one else would.

This was during a time when there was no welfare no Social Security and basically no social services for the poor.”

On March 29, 1882, the Connecticut state legislature on officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society.

“His purpose in calling them together was to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement, and promoting closer ties of fraternity among them,” said Rohe. He also set up a basic system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group who died would not find themselves in dire financial straits.

“There was no protection for the wives and the widows or children of the deceased men who back then were the only breadwinners. So, Father McGivney formed an insurance company where members dropped $.50 into a bucket each time they met. When a brother needed help, or a wife needed help because her husband died the Knights would

provide for her.”

In 1968, ten men sitting around a table discussed the possibility of forming a Knights of Columbus Council in Mount Olive. With the blessings of Father Leo P. Carey, pastor of St. Jude’s Church, the formation of the Mount Olive Columbian Club became a reality.

On July 18, 1968 saw the Knights of Columbus Council 6100 established with 85 knights. The organization was well on its way to becoming one of the township’s largest with a current membership roll of 300 members.

“It was through the efforts of many of the founding members that the Mount Olive Squires were formed,” said Rohe. On January 17, 1971 twenty-two young Catholic men put their signatures on the charter of the St. Jude Columbian Squires 2192.

“The Squires is a youth group that’s affiliated with the Knights of Columbus. They range in age from 10 through 18,” said Rohe. “We are a faith-based organization, that serves God and our fellow man. We try and teach these boys leadership skills. We feel the quality of the young men that come out of this program is probably better than ever because it takes so much more to make it happen.”

1998 saw the renaming of the council. Prior to that it was known as the Men’s Council of the Knights of Columbus.

“When our former chaplain Father Joseph Cassidy passed away, we wanted some way to honor and remember him so we renamed the council on July 26, 1998 as the Father Joseph A. Cassidy Council 6100,” said Rohe.

Today, the Knights of Columbus is 15,900 councils and

1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Europe, and the countries in the Caribbean, and South Pacific.

Their charitable activities encompass local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission, and Habitat for Humanity, to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local charities.

The opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless.

In 2017, the Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record for the 19th consecutive year. Charitable donations increased from $177 million in 2016, to a new total of $185,652,989 in 2017. “In addition, we achieved our highest level of charitable service in 2017, volunteering more than 75 million hours of service.”

“The founding officers of the fledgling organization chose the name “Knights of Columbus” because they felt that, as a Catholic group, it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America,” said Rohe.

“This would emphasize that it was a Catholic who discovered, explored, and colonized the North American continent. At the same time “Knights” would signify that the membership embodied knightly ideals of spirituality and service to Church, country and fellowman.”

One hundred thirty-eight years later, the Knights is still true to its founding principles of spirituality and service to Church, country and fellowman. “Join us and you can make a difference,” said Rohe.

ven if you’re not Irish, a green treat like this Luck o’ the Irish Mint Pie can get you and your guests into the festive spirit. With enough seasonal flavor to go around, this recipe makes two pies, so be sure to cut every leprechaun a generous portion.

Luck o’ the Irish Mint Pie Makes: 2 pies (9 inches each) 3 3/4 cups heavy whipped cream, divided 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 1/4 cups, plus 2 tablespoons, powdered sugar, divided 5 drops green food coloring 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided 1/4 teaspoon mint extract 1 bag mint chocolate candies, chopped, divided 2 chocolate cookie crusts (9 inches each) 1 bag mint chocolate candies To make filling: In bowl of stand mixer, whisk 2 1/2 cups heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Transfer to bowl.

In separate stand mixer bowl, beat cream cheese on high 2 minutes. Gradually add 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar and green food coloring; mix until smooth.

Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and mint extract; mix well.

Fold prepared whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. Fold 1 cup chopped mint chocolate candies into filling.

To make frosting: In bowl of stand mixer, whisk remaining heavy cream and remaining powdered sugar. Add remaining vanilla extract and mix until stiff peaks form.

Pour filling into crusts and smooth tops.

Fill decorating bag with frosting and pipe thick band around edges of pies.

Then pipe circle dollops evenly around edges of pies.

Scatter 1 cup chopped mint chocolate candies in middle of pies. Place whole mint chocolate candies into each dollop of frosting around edges of pies.

Refrigerate until firm, 5-6 hours.

he Warren County Hall of Fame committee is currently seeking nominations of residents who have “made Warren County proud” through making a difference. Nominees for this year’s inclusion must be submitted by May 15. Nominations should be based on one or more of the following qualities: Public service, military service, business, sports, arts and entertainment, education, or special recognition (for those who have impacted the county but do not fall into the previous categories).

Each nomination category is broad and may apply to multiple types of nominees.

For example, public service nominations can include community volunteers or a public official that has positively impacted the community. Business nominees can be either a business person or business itself.

Sports nominees have included athletes, sports administrators, and coaches, including careers in Warren County and beyond.

Arts and entertainment nominees also may have careers that stretched beyond the county. Military service nominees may be active or veteran members of the armed

services.

I Remember Dad: Reflections of Dad’s Camp Meeting Sermons

By Richard Mabey Jr. ost people know that my Dad was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. And, most people know that my Dad served as Vice President of the Beavertown Historical Society for over 10 years. But, very few people know that my Dad served as a Lay Leader of the Boonton United Methodist Church for nearly 20 years.

Dad was also served with a Christian outreach group that presented evangelistic meetings for Methodist churches throughout the USA. Dad, with Mom’s supporting help, would present sermons for weekend camp meetings, mostly along the eastern seaboard. In time, my Dad developed a very sincere and earnest quality in his sermons.

To clarify, Dad would not be the only speaker on the agenda for the weekend evangelic camp meetings. A good dozen or so individuals would present sermons for the weekend meetings. Dad took this job very seriously. I was so very proud of him for his wholesome, down-to-earth, heart-felt stories that he would share during his Christian presentations.

Dad would draw upon his recollections of his years as a Scoutmaster, the people he met along his travels as a long-distance truck driver, his memories of serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II, and of course his role as a husband and father.

I was always impressed with the time that Dad spent studying and preparing for one of his sermons. This was an era before home computers. So, my Dad had to study

his Bible the old-fashioned way, without the benefit of Internet cross referencing. Dad loved the Gospel of John. He also often referred to the Book of Psalms and the Book of Proverbs, a lot of times in his Christian talks.

I remember that there was a distinct meter to my Dad’s sermons. Dad was not an emotional speaker. He did not raise his voice. He simply spoke in a most steadfast, compelling manner that rang with a truth of sincerity and a poetic earnest quality. I was always, all so proud of my Dad for all of his hard work to bring truth to the people who came to the camp meetings.

Now, that I’m 66 years old, I find myself reflecting more and more of all of my Dad’s wonderful accomplishments in his life. I so deeply regret that I never videotaped any of Dad’s sermons. They were often simple stories of life lessons and would have a Biblical reference. My father touched the lives of hundreds of hundreds of people with his camp meeting sermons, his many years of volunteer service as a Scoutmaster, his dedicated service to the Beavertown Historical Society, and his friendly spirit that flowed from his heart in his many journeys cross country in his job as a long-distance truck driver.

I’d give an eyetooth to talk with my Dad again, for just five minutes. If your Dad is still on this side of Heaven’s Gate, please do consider giving him a phone call tonight, or visit him in the next few days. If your Dad is living a considerable distance from where you are, please consider getting pen and paper and write him an old-fashioned letter to send off in the mail. None of us have a guarantee on

how much time we have left upon this old earth. Please don’t put off for tomorrow, what you can do today, when it comes to letting family members know that you love and appreciation them.

5 Tips to Fight Sleep Deprivation

D

espite a desire for perfect sleep, Americans are not even close to getting the recommended eight hours a night, and 1 in 4 Americans believes the sleep they are getting isn’t the quality rest they want and need.

“To put sleep deprivation into perspective, 37% of Americans report they have fallen asleep behind the wheel,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, a sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “About 5% report falling asleep while driving on a monthly basis.

Clearly, sleep deprivation is wide-spread and a risk factor for overall well-being.”

With chronic sleep deprivation, the brain’s ability to maintain attention and focus continues to decline over time. In addition to impairing mental function, lack of sleep has been associated with a host of risks to overall health.

mid-point of your wake cycle (halfway between when you wake up and go to sleep).

Limit screen time. If you turn to your phone to help wind down while you’re in bed, you’re not alone, but you may be doing more harm than good. According to a survey conducted

by Mattress Firm on sleep habits, the average person scrolls on his or her phone while lying in bed for more than 12 minutes before shutting down for the night.

What’s more, the light from

the screen serves as a stimulant, as does the digital content you’re viewing.

That means you’re making it physically harder to fall asleep than if you put down your devices at least 30 minutes before bed.

Stick to a sleep schedule.

The average person gets less than six hours of sleep per night, according to the survey – a far cry from the eight hours most experts

recommend. One way to buck this trend is to make it a point to turn in and wake up at the same time every day so you synchronize your sleep time with your internal clock. While eight hours is the standard, you may need to adjust up or down to find the amount sleep that lets you wake feeling rested.

Develop a pre-bedtime routine. You can train your body to prepare for sleep by

creating a pattern or a routine that eases you toward sleep.

“Even something as simple as putting on a sleep mask each night, reading in bed for 20 minutes or practicing the same shower routine at the same time every night signals to your brain it’s time to hit the hay,” Kansagra said. “Creating a bedtime routine that lasts continued on page 45

These everyday safety tips can help you navigate everything from car seat safety to baby-proofing and safe sleep, keeping your child out of harm’s way as much as possible from birth through his or her toddler years.

Car Seat Safety Always use a valid (typically less than 6 years old), federally approved car seat in motor vehicles.

4. An inclusive period tracking app There are more than 200 period-tracking apps; most are targeted to Western adult women and provide information that can be gender-stereotyping or fertility-fo-

cused. Founded by UNICEF’s Asia branch, Oky is the world’s first period tracking app co-created with girls, for girls. Packed with information vetted by global health experts, the app is tailored to Indonesian and Mongolian cultures and available in local dialects. To support further advancements in this sector, the app is open source, digitally inclusive and available even in areas where online access is limited. In its next phase, the organization plans to scale and adapt the app for use in East Africa.

3. Schools made from recycled plastic waste There are three significant problems facing children in Côte d’Ivoire: There are not enough schools, there are not enough employment opportunities for adults and there is an overabundance of trash. Daily, the Abidjan metropolitan area produces 288 tons of plastic waste. Tackling all three issues, UNICEF works with Conceptos Plásticos to employ women to recycle plastic into bricks to build classrooms. The bricks, which will be used to build more than 500 classrooms across the country this year, are 100% non-toxic plastic, fire- and wind-resistant, waterproof, insulated and lighter and quicker to assemble than regular bricks.
