Mt. Olive Girl Scout Goes for the Gold with Special Dementia Project

By Anya Bochman here are few diseases as cruel and baffling to the medical profession as the conditions that fall under the umbrella of age-related dementia. An impairment of memory significant enough to affect daily functioning, dementia includes Alzheimer’s Disease, which is progressive and fatal. Though there are a number of clinical trials and medications that may slow the progression of the disease, currently it has no cure. There are, however, many things that caregivers and family members can do to alleviate the suffering of people struck with dementia. In Morris County, a Mt. Olive girl scout and high school sophomore is under-

taking a special project in an effort to help those suffering from the disease.

Christine Hruby of Flanders, a sophomore at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta and a girl scout with Troop 4218 of Mt. Olive, is set to receive the Gold Award for creating special blankets for sufferers of dementia. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious and difficult to earn award in the organization, and tackling social issues is at the core of the accolade.

tion to education access to expanded STEM training for girls in underserved communities.” Hruby’s initiative to create 50 sensory blankets, also known as fidget blankets, for dementia-stricken residents of Merry Heart Senior Care Services in Succasunna fits in well with the required criteria.

According to Vicki Hruby, Christine’s mother, the girl was originally inspired to begin her project after visiting her great-aunt at Merry Heart for two years. Although her aunt does not suffer from dementia, during her visits Hruby was exposed to many patients who do.

“My great-aunt is in [Merry Heart] right now, so I see a lot of people with dementia,” Hruby said. “Sensory blankets is something they need and do not currently have.”

People with dementia may have problems with shortterm memory, which makes any number of tasks -from keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments or traveling out of the neighborhood – a struggle that typically exacerbates with time.

In the case of most progressive dementias, including Alzheimer's disease, there is presently no treatment that slows or stops the deterioration. But there are drug regimens that may temporarily improve symptoms. The same medications used to treat Alzheimer's are among the drugs sometimes prescribed to help with symptoms of other types of dementias. Non-drug therapies can also alleviate some symptoms of these conditions.

While the core symptoms of dementia, such as memory impairment and a decline in reasoning, judgment and communication are more or less familiar to the public, some other prevalent aspects are less well known. For example, anxiety is more common in people with dementia than those without, affecting between five to 20 percent.

People suffering from both dementia and anxiety may also exhibit behavioral changes including agitation, hoarding, seeking constant reassurance, not wanting to be left alone or closely following their caregiver or family member around.

The person may appear restless and engage in pacing and

fidgeting.

And just as children are often calmed by their favorite toy or blanket, a person with Alzheimer’s dementia or other memory loss condition may also be soothed by a special sensory blanket, or a dementia “fidget quilt.” Often, during the latter stages of the disease, suffers may exhibit hand fidgeting, as though they are agitated or searching for something to hold. The person with dementia may pull on their clothing or bedding, or repeatedly rub their hands up and down.

A specially-made fidget blanket serves to soothe the sufferer while giving them something to occupy their hands; often, such a blanket will have zippers or buttons, and can be large enough to lay across the lap. A weighted blanket or lap pad is a simple, non-drug option that can be used to reduce anxiety, calm nerves, provide comfort and promote deep sleep.

The blankets Hruby is making are soft and large enough to cover the lap of a wheelchair-bound person, and feature accessories such as zippers and pom poms. The girl scout is also in the process of preparing a “sensory box” to go along with the blankets, a kit that will contain several small objects the patient may find soothing. To custom make these boxes, Hruby is taking a survey from Merry Heart patients’ family members.

“Since my mom was diagnosed with dementia, everything has been changing,” Vicki said. “That, along with her visits to Merry Heart, led Christine to design the blankets. She spoke with a nurse specializing in dementia care, who gave her a few pointers.”

Hruby has been a girl scout since kindergarten, and before she was eligible for the gold award in high school, she had received the bronze and silver awards. According to Vicki, she had to prepare a proposal for her sensory blanket project and go before a special committee to get it approved.

Per GSA guidelines, there are seven steps that must be completed before a scout is awarded the gold. Among these, she must identify and investigate a community issue she cares about, create a plan to tackle the root cause, as well as form a team to help her in this mission. After the scout accomplishes her plan, she must share the outcome and tell her story. As a result of their efforts, Gold Award girl scouts typically have a competitive edge in the college admissions process and elicontinued on page 10

What Does It Mean to be an American?

By Connie Schultz t was a wonderful birthday dinner, the kind we friends have come to expect whenever we arrive to celebrate the person who is about to blow out the candles. We leave feeling lucky to be alive, every last one of us.

This dinner, however, took an interesting turn after the guest of honor broke character and raised her hand to silence us. This is not her practice.

She had a question. What does it mean, to each of us, to be an American?

We were about a dozen women, all of us over 50, sitting around her dining room table in the city of Cleveland. Our abrupt silence was unusual, not counting the times we have bowed our heads together in prayer, ever so briefly. We are used to one another and the laughter we bring to any room in which we are gathered. And yet here we were, suddenly quiet and perhaps a bit sullen as we mulled the issue at hand.

Who are we now, as Americans?

Implicit in the question is the acknowledgment that we are no longer who we used to be. If age has anything to do with it, it›s only in the depth and breadth of our experience, which we can›t ignore.

We›ve never lived in a time such as this.

Watergate feels so manageable now, a scary diagnosis with a positive outcome.

Life with Donald Trump is triage, and no one has the necessary training to predict our odds.

One by one, we shared our thoughts.

Each of us has our own definitions of citizenship and patriotism, but a universal theme unspooled.

We feel differently about America, and our role in it.

We are not an insulated group. Four in attendance are members of the LGBTQ community, with long memories of lives,

We were reminded of that unfortunate fact this week when President Trump withdrew an apparently secret invitation to the Taliban to visit Camp David. The Taliban was, is and will remain an Islamic terror group; it has continuously sought the murder of American soldiers and citizens for two decades. Why would the Trump administration think it a good idea to sign an agreement with radicals who seek to overthrow the administration of Afghanistan, support terrorism and despise the United States?

Do members of the administration truly believe that any agreement signed by the Taliban will be binding?

The answer, of course, is no. That›s why the talks fell apart, according to The New York Times -- a response from inside the administration in the aftermath of a terror attack on American soldiers this week, a recognition of the obvious.

What Does It Mean... continued from page 4 These small snapshots don›t begin to describe all the living we had done before we sat down at that table at that moment. Every woman has her stories, and isn›t it a shame not everyone knows that?

Defining ourselves as Americans requires a distancing from those who think their residency-at-birth was an act of divine intervention. We have no control over where we are born, and to credit God for our geography is to cast doubt on his motives for everyone else. We are lucky, perhaps, but not the chosen.

That evening, we couldn›t talk about being Americans without veering into a discussion about what it means to be a patriot. Knowing the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and flying an American flag on Independence Day is showmanship, not stewardship.

If we define activism as a refusal to sit on the sidelines,

then so many women of my generation have become activists in ways they never thought they would be. They refuse to be invisible when so many want us to believe our time has passed. They speak up at family gatherings and refuse to apologize for the awkward silence. They write letters to editors and share their views on social media, and show up for one another when any one of them is under attack.

One of my closest friends, who has spent much of her life keeping the peace, now calls her Republican U.S. senator almost daily to demand that he stand up to Trump›s racism and violent rhetoric. She provides her name and address, and is never insulting or rude. When a live voice answers the phone, she assures the staffer that her outrage is directed at the senator because he is the one selected to serve the American people, and he is letting his country down.

On that night, at that birthday dinner, we talked about

all of this, and so much more, filled with hope no matter what. That›s what happens when women gather. We draw strength from one another, and then we go back out into the world, for the world.

Isn’t it a shame not everyone knows that?

All of which means that American troops are likely to remain in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Few politicians will be bold enough to simply state that truth. After all, when John McCain said as much in 2008, he was roundly mocked by Barack Obama -- the same Obama who escalated the war in Afghanistan and retained thousands of troops there, despite promising withdrawal repeatedly. But our politicians should be brave enough to recognize that a weaker America on the world stage means a more vulnerable America at home. If we didn›t learn that lesson on 9/11,

we›re bound to repeat it.

Paragon Village Resident Celebrates Centenarian Birthday

By: Elise Phillips Margulis etty Branin of Paragon Village in Hackettstown just turned 100 years old. She’s lucid, healthy and cheerful. Everyone wants to know her secret to longevity, good health and a great attitude.

A lifelong Jersey resident, Branin was born in Dover and grew up in Stanhope. She has a son, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren who are ages two and eight.

She also had a daughter who predeceased her.

After graduating from New Jersey State Teacher's College in Trenton (now The College of New Jersey), Branin taught high school Health, Physical Education and Drivers Education for 20 years at DePaul Catholic School in Wayne.

Her mother was a teacher as well.

Although she was too modest to mention it, DePaul Catholic School honors a student each year with The Betty Branin Award for Physical Education.

Branin loved all sports and especially enjoyed swimming. It was her passion for swimming that led her to meeting her husband at Lake Musconetcong where his family had a summer home. They were 17 and 18 when they met.

After they were married they moved to Packanack Lake in Wayne. Branin resided in towns with water bodies most of her life. Nature is good for the soul, and swimming must have contributed to her good health.

Branin, her husband and their children were all nature lovers. “We spent our summers swimming at Packanack Lake and enjoyed camping trips in Lake George, New York” (yet another lake in her life).

In addition to the camping trips, a favorite memory of hers is a seven-week trip to Europe that she and her husband took in the 1970s. Branin recalls, “My husband worked for Insley Construction Equipment, a company that manufactures materials used to build highways.” He traveled a lot for work and invited her along on that European business trip during which they visited several countries.

She remembers her vacation very fondly. “It was wonderful to travel around Europe!”

Unfortunately, her husband passed away decades ago.

He was a smoker and died of heart cancer. She beat the odds by surviving second-hand smoke at home and a smoke-filled teachers’ lounge for 20 years.

When asked for longevity advice, Branin said she “ate fruits and vegetables and enjoyed swimming and all sports.” She also “read a lot when her eyes were better and had German Shorthair Pointer dogs throughout her life.”

In addition to her love of participating in athletics, Branin likes spectator sports. “I’m a huge fan of the New York Mets and the New Jersey Devils.”

Branin said she has been blessed with good health all her life. She uses a walker now but gets around well. Her mother lived to be 94, although her father passed away when he was 68.

These days her favorite outings are to the Budd Lake Diner and dining at Thiswilldous Eatery in Belvidere, NJ with her family.

Even at the age of 100 she’s happy, healthy and an inspiration to those around her. She enjoys living in Paragon Village a great deal. “It’s the tops!” Branin exclaimed. She

added, “Everyone is very friendly.” She’s a positive person and most likely has been one for the last century.

The sort of community engagement and leadership required of Gold Award scouts is not new to Hruby; Vicki reports that the high school student has a history of organizing and helping others. Last year, she started the Take Action Club at her school. Some past projects of the club involved making cards for residents of Merry Heart as well as collecting old mascara wands to be donated to the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge. The wands are used to remove fly eggs and larva from the fur and feathers of wild animals.

Laura Solowsky, Hruby’s Scoutmaster who has known the girl since the fifth grade, said that the scout’s work ethic stands out among the rest. “[Hruby] is one of my more quiet girls, but she sets goals and accomplishes them,” Solowsky said. “She is determined and she works hard.”

This sentiment was echoed by Vicki, who pointed to the girl’s dedication to both school and family.

“She really wants to help others and make a difference,” Vicki said. “She already helps with my mother by taking walks with her, and she takes our dog for therapy visits with patients at Merry Heart.”

Merry Heart has been serving the geriatric health care needs of Morris County for over fifty years. For her part, Hruby is interested in learning more about the disorder through research.

“It makes me happy to know that I’m helping so many people,” Hruby said. “I was thinking I might want to do something in the medical field related to dementia [later in life].”

To reach her goal of creating 50 blankets, Hruby has set up a drop off point in her school library where people can donate yarn. Once she completes the blankets and sensory boxes – an endeavor that must take at least 100 hours of independent work, per

GSA requirements – she will have to present her efforts to her Girl Scout council. According to Solowsky, this aspect of the award distinguishes it from similar endeavors in the Boy Scouts, where aspiring Eagle Scouts are allowed to count hours when others assisted them on their projects.

In working her way through the project’s criteria, Vicki says her daughter has mastered important communication skills.

“She has had to show her leadership skills by talking to adults, such as the director of

Merry Heart and the senior citizens there,” Vicki said. “She has definitely learned how to communicate better with adults and to direct her peers.”

And the organization that is at the core of Hruby’s project, the Girl Scouts – which she has been involved in for 11 years - is instrumental in shaping the student’s life.

“The Girl Scout group is something that she liked because it let her develop her own project,” Vicki said. “It allowed her to help others and give back to the community.”

Local Expert Shows NJ Parents How to get the Most Money for Their Children’s College Education

ew Jersey parents suffering with finding ways to pay for their children’s college education can finally get the solutions to their college funding problems.

Most families who earn $75,000 or more and own a home assume they are not eligible for financial aid. However, most families with income over $100,000 are actually eligible for some types of “need based” financial aid. They simply need to know how to get their fair share.

Letter to the Editor: Bill Robinson for Mount Olive Board of Education

M

y name is Bill Robinson and I am running as an incumbent in the November 5th election for the Mount Olive Board of Education.

It is my hope to be re-elected so that we may continue the positive tradition that has become the hallmark of the district.

We are a town that has become acclaimed as a very desirable place to receive a great education. Although these accolades were not pursued, we have received recognition both on a statewide and a national level.

This did not happen by chance.

As a community we have built, maintained and continually improved an infrastructure that our students are able to be successful amid surroundings that are optimal for learning and succeeding! Each of our staff members are part of making every day a positive experience from the custodial and maintenance men and women who keep our buildings a clean and desirable environment to the administration that oversees the entire operation.

Then there is the teaching staff and aides. This is where it all begins for our children. From kindergarten through advanced

AP courses there is a dedication that is palpable! For those parents and mentors who are familiar with the schools you know the excitement from day one and how each year becomes a new adventure that expands opportunities.

The high school has become the learning tool that can expand a student's horizons to places they never would have thought about.

It is a place where students learn to work , and together be successful. They also learn that failure is the first step to future success.

Did you ever think your child would be working a real TV station either behind the scenes as a camera operator, an editor , a director or even in front of a camera as an on screen personality?

Besides all the usual courses that all students take there is robotics which includes builders,coders, electrical engineering and non technical students who present to the

judges all the positive things that the team has done to help other teams become more viable and community efforts for their fellow man .There is also underwater robotics which in two years of existence has twice qualified for a spot at the national competition.

In the Arts can you see your child in marching band, jazz band, symphony orchestra or a variety of vocal groups? How about behind or in front of the curtain in some of the best high school or middle school productions that you will ever see? What about painting and photography where our students are often scholarship recipients to prestigious art schools.

There are a myriad of math and science courses, new or more advanced added yearly. Does gene splicing sound far fetched in a high school? Not in our new biotech lab. How about a new business lab replete with up to the second ticker tape and on screen TVs with the various business news

services in our brand new business lab!

OK! Why vote for me? My one real value to the school is never allowing it to be complacent or stagnant. I sometimes had to work for years to get another important course into the curriculum. Many years ago I heard a curriculum supervisor say that "computers are a passing fancy". It was thought that what was good enough for prior generations was good enough for these kids.

No more, at least in Mt. Olive. Our children face a world where not only do we change jobs, sometimes every few years, but careers!

It is of the utmost importance that when they leave Mt. Olive, our students are prepared for the future, be it college or technical training.

The BOE is an unpaid elective position.

Our only remuneration is the success of our children and that is the reason I attend many of our functions ,it is payment enough.

You may have to search the ballot for the BOE section, but it's there. Most importantly, vote! Your vote does matter.

Hackettstown’s Heath Village Inspires Staff with English Language Program

By Dawn M Chiossi oing on since February of this year, Hackettstown’s Heath Village inspires their staff with its English Language Program.

This program is a class format, an offshoot of the Adult English Language Tutoring Program sponsored by the Literacy New Jersey Sussex Branch. This program is for any adult in Sussex or Warren Counties, who would like to improve their facility with English-making them more comfortable speaking English.

It has been said that education is a great equalizer. It opens doors to everyone; it stirs curiosity, accesses information, and lets the mind ponder, inquire and enjoy.

The English Language Program is spearheaded and run by two-year Heath Village resident, Marguerite Gadel, as well as Susan Sumner. Gadel explains that the program works with the State and Local Literacy New Jersey Organization’s Sussex Branch (a branch that expands to Warren County.)

Gadel herself had been a part of the literacy organization for an impressive 20 years.

Although relatively new, Heath Village’s program is an informal, inclusive one. It focuses mainly on spoken communication,

conversational English, and some grammar and spelling. Concentrating on how to be comfortable speaking English, students will learn enough to communicate easily in functional areas such as making appointments or filling out forms. The program seeks to make communications easier and much more fluid, both in work and social situations.

Additionally, the class will make it more enjoyable for students to follow a TV program or read a book. “I want them to really enjoy reading in English,” Gadel shares.

“There’s even some students in the class who are taking their test for citizenship.

That’s a big job,” she prides.

Gadel explains that she came up with the idea of starting the program soon after she moved to Heath Village.

Immediately proposing the idea to Heath Village’s CEO to make the program available, and receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, she set to work.

Wanting the English Language Program to be engaging and relatable for the students, the program involves them right away by having them read out loud. “We try to jump on something of interest to the students or go over something from the week before continued on page 18

Gadel can’t say enough about her students in general, admiring their determination and hard work ethic. “They come to class completely on their own time. Usually after working a full day. Then they’ll have to go home, take care of their families and do homework. It’s so impressive that they are willing to put in the time and effort to do this,” she enthuses.

They will even find creative ways to learn.

For example, Gadel relates that one of her students will watch the news without subtitles to learn what is going on.

For Gadel, just the small act of using her talents to make a difference in the lives of others has created a ripple effect. “I love seeing the students help each other,” she says.

“For instance, a student from Mexico will help someone from Colombia. It is wonderful to see that happen. It is thrilling to see them put in so much effort and work so hard to learn.”

Gadel sees with her own eyes how much of an impact the program is making to her students. They are not only learning but enjoying. What’s more, they are sharing

that feeling and connection with others. “I remember when the class discovered that Heath Village had a new resident, a lady from England who had been in England’s Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) in World War II,” Gadel shares.

“A student had recently read an article to us regarding the R.A.F. Because of that, the class eagerly wanted to talk to this lady and ask her questions. They were so involved, asking about her experiences and how they were different in England as opposed to here in America. It was wonderful.”

The Literacy New Jersey Sussex Branch will be training new volunteers to be tutors beginning in late September. Training for new tutors is offered in the spring and the fall. It is ideal for someone who would like to make a difference, no experience is necessary. Training consists of three in-person meetings interspersed with online training. The first session is especially useful in helping people decide whether or not they would like to do the tutoring. “I would love to encourage some people to train for this great volunteer work. We always have waiting students,” Gadel enthuses.

The Morristown Festival of Books is Back

By Henry M. Holden he Morristown Festival of Books is an annual two-day event that takes place this year on October 11 and 12.

According to Rachel Barry, Director of the Morristown Festival of Books, “The 6-year-old event is modeled after successful book festivals in other communities throughout the world. Each autumn, the festival brings together authors with readers and book lovers. The Festival is New Jersey’s premier book festival, celebrating the written word’s power to challenge, transport and transform.”

Barry says the festival is growing each year. “We started with about 1,500 visitors six years ago and last year we hosted over 8,000.”

The opening night is a ticketed Keynote Event featuring Preet Bharara who served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, Bharara joined the NYU School of Law faculty as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence. Bharara will speak on Friday evening at the Mayo Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm.

Tickets will be available through the MPAC box office and on the festival website. Tickets are also available at the door on the night of the event, as availability allows.

The Main Festival takes place all day on Saturday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), rain or shine.

This year’s festival features more than 50 authors. Author selections featuring various genres are designed to appeal to a variety of ages and reading interests.

“Authors will be speaking and answering questions in informal one-hour indoor sessions at five festival venues throughout the day,” said Barry. “Immediately following

his or her talk, you will have the opportunity to speak with your favorite authors and have your books personalized at the Author Signing Tent, on the Vail Mansion lawn.” These sessions are free, no tickets required; general seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be portable restrooms at the Vail Mansion lawn.

“The Festival center is on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion (110 South Street), where there is an Information Tent, a Book Tent selling copies of the visiting authors’ books, the Signing Tent where authors will greet visitors and sign books, and concession stands selling refreshments.”

“This year's closing event is an exciting interactive event called Pitchapalooza,” said Barry. “It's like American Idol for books (only without Simon). Anyone with an idea for a book has the chance to pitch it to a panel of judges. But they get only one minute.”

The hosts, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry (a.k.a.

The Book Doctors) team up with guest industry insiders

to form the judging panel. The Judges critique everything from idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much more. Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapaloozas are educational and entertaining for all. All attendees come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing industry.

At the end of each Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner. That winner receives an introduction by Eckstut and Sterry to an agent or publisher who is appropriate for their work. The Festival audience will also have a chance to pick a winning pitch. That Audience Choice winner will be voted on by the audience and will receive a 30-minute phone consultation from Eckstut and Sterry (a $150 value).

KidFest @ MFOB includes author talks, signings, and fun activities all day for children up to 12 years old. Additionally, concessions will be available in the KidFest outdoor area outside the Presbyterian Church Parish House at 65 South Street.

Please note, the festival is not held on the Morristown Green. There are several public parking garages within walking distance of the Festival center. This is a casual event. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for cool weather. It is a rain or shine event, so please bring an umbrella if the day’s weather warrants it.

West Orange Resident, Centenary Student, Studies Shakespeare Studies Abroad

By: Melissa A. Kay achel S. Bise, a student at Centenary University, had quite the time studying abroad at Oxford University in England this summer. Her experience was life-changing, educational, inspirational, and more than she imagined it could be.

Bise is a college senior - an English major in the Secondary Education track. She looks forward to completing college and a future that is destined to be bright. She shares, “College, so far, is everything I’ve ever hoped for and more. Centenary is so special because of the support and opportunities. The professors have opened my eyes to different authors whom I now love, topics I never thought to research, and experiences I would never have had otherwise.

Centenary professors challenge you to become your best, while leaving you space to grow into the most ideal version of yourself. I love teaching, and am very excited to start practicum (pre-student teaching) this semester. I am currently working on graduate school applications.”

This summer, the West Orange student

left the States for the Summer Shakespeare intensive at Oxford University which gave Bise the opportunity to learn more about the playwright and poet while attending in-depth classes and exploring some fantastic places. Bise was in awe of her surroundings, from things to do and see and so on. “My favorite things were the shows and the different places I saw. I would walk every day to get to wherever I needed to, and on the way, saw the beautiful architecture and stopped in some interesting places. I also loved the New College campus because of how green and lovely it was. I took trips to several places during my time at Oxford, as well, including Windsor Castle, Bath, Stonehenge, the Isle of Wight, Cardiff (Wales), Cambridge, and Stratford-upon-Avon. I made an effort to visit every museum as part of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, as well as the schoolrooms and the MAD Museum. I also saw Taming of the Shrew at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theater (which inspired my final project!) and Pygmalion at the Attic Theatre, which is kind of a hidden

gem. One of my most cherished memories will always be going to the New College Commemoration Ball. It only happens once every three years (so I was told) but it was amazing. The food was delicious, the lights were magical, and the atmosphere

was wonderful in every possible way!”

Since this was Bise’s second time studying abroad, she was prepared for what was to come, not to say this experience wasn’t special. She met interesting people continued on page 26

Student, Studies Shakespeare... continued from page 22 from all over the world and can now offer firsthand advice for those interesting in doing something similar. She advises, “Work hard and study hard, but leave time to enjoy the surroundings. I experienced many firsts during my time abroad (first opera, first time to Wales, first time to Stratford, first birthday without my family there, etc.). It will be scary at first, but everything will be okay. Make a list of everything you want to do, research the area and places you wish to visit, and plan!”

Each day of the six-week program had its individuality, but Bise summed up her educational experience as such, “Every week, my course load consisted of reading two plays, writing a seven page paper on the topic of my choice, and reading critical and historic commentary. I spent about a day and a half reading and planning, then wrote my papers in the New College library over the course of five to eight hours. Working in the New College library was an experience on its own because it gave me the atmosphere I needed to produce a top paper. After the paper was written, I would let it sit until the next day when I would return to it to edit. The final project was a little more intense. I brought in some of my education background and designed a presentation and lesson focused on exploring the purpose for Shakespeare writing his female characters the way he does while bringing in elements of setting and how that relates to the text. It was interesting for both myself and my tutor.”

As Patricia Mahaffey, Coordinator of Study Away and Internships at Centenary explains, “The study abroad experience allows students to understand and appreciate another culture while enhancing their confidence and independent thinking. Students make memories and friends that will last a lifetime. However, the most important outcome of studying abroad is the impact on career goals, marketable skills and employability. Employers look very favorably on a study abroad experience when evaluating the resumes of job candidates.”

This study abroad program is one of Centenary Future U’s future-forward approach to higher education. Students are prepared for their future thanks to the rich resources the University provides.

Naturally, Bise highly recommends the study abroad program for other students who are able to embark on a similar adventure. “I would absolutely recommend this program to everyone. It was one of the most transformative experiences I have ever had abroad, and I wish I could go back!”

As for what the future holds, Bise would like to become a professor with a focus on British literature. She hopes to become a published author and has a “secret project” up her sleeve. For now, she’s applying to several doctoral programs this semester, and if not accepted, will get to work as a teacher upon graduating then return to school for her master’s degree.

Kwasnik Family Named Winner In Alte Roofing’s No Roof Left Behind 5th Free Roof Giveaway

athy Kwasnick and family have been named as winner of a new roof in Alte Roofing’s No Roof Left BehindTM initiative.

Kwasnik’s nomination entry for the contest is titled “Stage 4 Cancer Mom Needs a New Roof. ” Kwasnik, of Sparta in Sussex County, was left a young widow in 2002 with 2 small children. They are now young adults, doing well, and Kwasnik has remarried. However, in June of 2018, she suffered a seizure from a brain tumor, a result of metastatic uterine cancer. She also suffers from Lynch Syndrome, a genetic condition which predisposes her to different cancers. She is passionate about raising awareness for the syndrome, from which her father passed in February. Her roof is showing its age and starting to leak. Any money saved was needed to pay for large medical bills over the last year.

Kwasnik has worked for a NJ non-profit organization for many years, and understands what it means to give back. She is grateful that Alte Roofing has presented this opportunity.

Through the process, Kwasnik reconnected with many people from her past that she hadn’t been in touch with for years. The winner is selected through a month long online vote.

While votes from the general public come in, the four finalists rally hard to try to earn enough votes to put themselves over the edge as winner.

Kwasnik was selected as one of four finalists from a record 38 entries in the company’s 5th annual roof giveaway. The other finalists were Ron & Vicky Brim of Belvidere in Warren

County, Anthony & Kelley Boccio of Mt. Arlington in Morris County and John & Sue Spiridigliozzi of Hampton in Hunterdon County.

Make Family Meals Matter

F

or busy families, finding time to eat together isn’t always easy, but coming together around the dinner table regularly isn’t just about keeping hungry bellies full. Family meals nourish the spirit, brain and overall health.

Children who grow up sharing family meals are also more likely to exhibit prosocial behavior as adults, such as sharing, fairness and respect. Research has also shown that with each additional family meal shared during the week, adolescents are less likely to show symptoms of violence, depression and suicide; less likely to use or abuse drugs or run away; and less likely to engage in risky behavior or delinquent acts.

In addition, adults and children who eat at home more regularly are less likely to suffer from obesity, and increased family meals are associated with greater intake of fruits and vegetables.

If you struggle to make family meal time happen, try these tips from the experts at the Food Marketing Institute Foundation, creators of the National Family Meals Movement, which aims to help families reap the benefits of enjoying more meals together at home. Or you can find inspiration to make one extra family meal happen each

week with recipes like these Meatballs from the family-focused cookbook “Family Table by Robert Irvine.”

Plan ahead. Prepare staples or extras of your favorite recipes that you can refrigerate or freeze to use when you’re rushed for time.

Mix and match. Challenge yourself to see how many different ways you can use a grocery item until it’s gone.

Embrace convenience. Grocery stores have many time-saving solutions, and frozen and canned produce can be quick additions to many recipes.

Incorporate the kids. Involve your children in shopping, meal planning and meal preparation whenever possible.

Make nutritional balance easy. Plan your family’s plates by making sure you are getting all the food groups over the course of the day.

“By quieting the noise and being truly present with the people around us, simple tasks you might normally take for granted – like putting a good meal on the table – take on a deeper meaning,” Irvine writes in his book. “The meal ceases to be a time for physical nourishment and becomes something that feeds your family’s soul. 1 tablespoon fresh Italian parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil 3 cups basic tomato sauce In small saucepan over medium heat, sweat onion and garlic.

In large bowl, soak bread in water 1-2 minutes. Strain excess liquid.

In separate large bowl, add eggs, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese and onion-garlic mixture. Combine then add ground meat, soaked bread, extra-virgin olive oil, parsley and oregano. Mix thoroughly.

Divide mixture evenly to form 10-12 meatballs and use hands to roll into shape.

In large saute pan over high heat, brown meatballs in grapeseed oil on all sides.

Place browned meatballs in separate saucepot with basic tomato sauce. Bring to simmer and finish cooking, about 1 hour.

ooking for a small crowd can be daunting. With this recipe for Caramel French Toast, you can prepare it the night before, bake in the morning and satisfy your guests without going overboard in the kitchen.

Caramel French Toast 6 slices white bread, halved 1/4 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon corn syrup 3 eggs 3/4 cup half-and-half 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt

powdered sugar (optional) Cut bread slices in half.

In saucepan, melt butter. Add brown sugar and corn syrup. Bring to boil, stirring frequently.

Pour into 8-inch square baking dish. Arrange bread slices over caramel mixture.

In small bowl, whisk eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt. Pour over bread slices. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.

Heat oven to 350 F. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking and remove aluminum foil.

Bake 25-35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired; serve.

hen it comes to dessert, it’s hard to beat chocolate as the main ingredient for dishes of all kinds. Add a twist to your next treat with the sweet taste of caramel in this Chocolate Caramel Pie. Find more dessert recipes at Culinary. net.

Chocolate Caramel Pie 1 package (15 ounces) pie crust Filling: 24 caramels, unwrapped 1/3 cup water 2/3 cup brown sugar 2/3 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped 1/3 cup grated sweet baking chocolate, divided Topping: 1 cup white chocolate chip morsels 1/4 cup milk 1 cup whipping cream

2 tablespoons grated sweet baking chocolate Heat oven to 450 F. Prepare pie crust in 9-inch glass pie dish. Bake 8-9 minutes, or until lightly brown.

To make filling: In medium bowl, combine caramels and water. Melt in microwave, stirring frequently. Stir in brown sugar, sour cream, vanilla extract, eggs and walnuts.

Reduce oven to 350 F. Pour filling into cooled pie shell. Return to oven. Bake 3040 minutes, or until edges of filling are set.

Cool 15 minutes. Sprinkle 3/4 cup grated chocolate over pie. Refrigerate 2 hours.

To make topping: In small glass bowl, combine white chocolate morsels and milk.

Melt in microwave, stirring frequently. Set aside.

In small bowl, beat whipping cream until peaks form. Fold in melted white chocolate mixture. Spread over cooled filling. Sprinkle with remaining grated chocolate.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Warren County Christmas Tree Farm Earns Presidential Status

By Henry M. Holden id you ever wonder where the President and Vice President of the United States get their Christmas trees? Well lately it’s from Wyckoff Farms in Belvidere. But it didn’t start out that way.

In 1839, Simon Wyckoff purchased 172 acres of property in what is now known as White Township, Warren County. For the next four generations, the farm was entirely self-sufficient, producing milk, livestock and grain. This provided food and clothing for the family. This acreage has remained in the family and is now Wyckoff’s Christmas Tree Farm, LLC. In 1958, John W. Wyckoff Sr. (5th generation) began planting Christmas trees along with his 14 year old son, John W. Jr. “My grandfather, and father planted the first trees,” said John Wyckoff, Jr. “They planted about 1,000 Norway Spruce seedlings. Now the annual plantings include pine and fir and we have about 65,000 trees in production, of which at least 5,000 are ready for harvest.”

In 1967, the first eight trees were harvested. Two were used to celebrate Christmas in the two Wyckoff family homes on the farm, and six trees were sold for five dollars each.

Display of the trees for sale consisted of leaning them against a cattle pasture fence along the road for those passing by to see.

In 1977, John Jr. started his own landscaping business. Soon, father and son decided to become full time Christmas Tree farmers and expanded the business to a cut your own operation.

Currently, there are sixty-five acres of Christmas trees in production and overseen by

Quality has always been the standard for a Wyckoff Christmas Tree. The trees have been named 2013 National Grand Champion, and New Jersey Grand Champion eleven times. In 2013, a New Jersey Blue Spruce was selected as a White House Christmas Tree and it stood in the White House Blue Room that holiday season.

This year, a Blue Spruce grown by Wyckoff’s Christmas Tree Farm was named Reserve Grand Champion of the National Christmas Tree Association’s annual competition. The Reserve Champion farmer traditionally provides a Christmas tree for the Vice President. A Christmas tree grown by Wyckoff’s will be displayed at Vice President Mike Pence’s residence this year.

“We’ve only entered this contest twice and won a place each year, so I think we’re doing pretty good,” said Wyckoff.

The Wyckoff family has provided thousands of families with memories that will last a lifetime. “We welcome everyone to visit our farm,” said Wyckoff. “Whether it is your first time, or you have been here ten, twenty or thirty plus years as many have, you will still enjoy your visit.”

“At Wyckoff’s, we are anticipating a great cut your own Christmas Tree season,” said Wyckoff. “The Christmas spirit will be in full swing on the traditional opening day, Black Friday (Nov. 29) with a selection of over 5,000 cut your own trees. Fresh cut trees, beautiful wreaths, grave blankets, white pine roping and more items are also available.”

Smith, Fazzolari, Grogan, Kries, Johnson, and Spann to Join Warren County Elite in Hall of Fame

ix individuals who have proven through numerous accomplishments in their respective professional and personal backgrounds to be worthy of such recognition will join other prestigious residents in the Warren County Hall of Fame. They will officially be inducted at the 10th Annual Warren County Hall of Fame dinner on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington Township.

The honorees are former freeholder Edward Smith; senior care professionals Tracy Lyn Fazzolari Carroll, CSA, and Anne Grogan, LSW; youth sports volunteer Melville Kries, Sr.; and businessman/philanthropist John Johnson.

Maximillian Spann, Sr. will also be honored posthumously. Spann was a real estate professional and supporter of services for populations with developmental disabilities.

When inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Nov. 16 gala event, which includes entertainment and a silent auction, these outstanding individuals will join an elite group, which includes Marian Bredin, Dr. Marc Abo, Dr. James Goodwin, Norman Worth, Terrance “Terry” Lee, Garabed “Chuck” Haytaian, Norman Beatty, Christopher Maier, Dr.

During his tenure the County opened a new County Library Headquarters and a state-of-the-art County Library Branch; aided in Warren County Community College’s expansion; facilitated the expansion of Warren County’s landfill; kept Warren County’s budget balanced; and significantly reduced County debt.

He was named Freeholder of the Year by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors in 2016 and the Maurice Fitzgibbons Freeholder of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Counties (NJAC) in 2018; and received the Good Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 2016. Warren County Community College dedicated the Edward J. and Eileen Smith Drone Lab, named for he and his wife, as he was an advocate for establishing the drone program at the college, seeing it as an opportunity to train residents for jobs of the future.

Tracy is a passionate advocate for seniors’ CHOICE to “age in place.” Tracy is a voting member of the HHSSA-Home Care Association of America, whose members strive to educate the public, promote legislation, education, and advocacy to develop standards of care for properly licensed agencies. She is very active in the community. Tracy has served on the Washington BID and she partners with local organizations throughout Warren and Hunterdon counties. She offers a scholarship to college bound seniors at Warren Hills Regional High School and sponsors women from Walter Hoving Home to attend retreats. Tracy has demonstrated time and time again her professionalism and generosity towards the individuals and non-profit organizations of Warren County.

Melville Kries, Sr. Melville graduated from Washington High School in 1949. After graduation, he attended Churchman’s Business School and after college, he owned a local sporting goods store in Washington.

He also worked for Smith Motors for 52 years. It is his commitment and dedication to the youth of Washington however that

gives people pause. He has served as a youth sports coach in a variety of settings throughout the years. He coached Little League baseball for 32 years and was an integral part of the organization of youth football in Washington, where he served as a coach for six decades. He currently serves on the Board as Treasurer. He has been a member of the Washington Recreation Commission since its creation. Part of his role on the Commission was the planning of Meadow Breeze Park, considered an elite community park by any standards. He is a lifetime resident of the county, supporting many of his 13 grandchildren’s participation in Washington sports programs. Melville also served in the United States Navy in Korea. His dedication to youth sports resonates in the fact that he continues to participate in youth sports organizations at the age of 88.

John Johnson John Johnson of John Johnson Auto Group in Budd Lake and Washington has been a huge supporter of non-profit organizations for many years, in Warren County and elsewhere. He doesn’t make a big deal out of it, though; he prefers to have the attention on the non-profits, not him or his business. Most recently, he donated a car to DASACC that has been raffled off, with all proceeds going to that organization.

He also supports many community events run by the Hackettstown and Washington BIDs. As a business, John Johnson Auto Group is well-known for its honesty and integrity. John Johnson himself is recognized as one of the area’s leading businessmen.

Anne Grogan Anne, the long-time head of Geriatrics at St. Luke’s, has devoted herself to making things better for elderly patients. She started the Geriatric Assessment Program at Warren Hospital over 30 years ago, and she has spoken to hundreds of senior organizations over the years. She also started the adult medical daycare at Warren, providing a place for elder residents to stay during the day while their families and caregivers worked. She is known and respected by every organization dealing with Seniors in Warren County. Her entire career has been dedicated to creating and implementing programs to benefit seniors and counseling the” sandwich generation” as they navigate the eldercare maze. In 2017, she opened her own private practice, working directly with older adults and their caregivers. Anne’s services are now available to families as a geriatric case manager to assess the needs of the older relative and develop a game plan to help

the older person “age in place”. In addition to being a Licensed Social Worker in PA and NJ, Anne holds certifications in elder law, bioethics and public health, and a faculty fellowship in geriatric education.

Maximillian “Max” Spann, Sr. Maximillian ”Max” Spann, Sr. attended both Delbarton School and Bernardsville High School, graduating from high school in 1947. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the School of Agriculture at Rutgers University, Max served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His youth was spent in Oldwick, where his family imported cows from the Isle of Jersey, starting a passion that would last his lifetime. Following his discharge from the Army, he acquired a herd of Jersey cattle and opened Spann Jersey Farm. There he ran his own creamery and milk delivery route. He later sold his dairy operation and eventually became a real estate broker. He grew his business into one of the most respected real estate firms in the state. Max is credited with the innovation of marketing real estate at auction and his firm is now one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Max also devoted his efforts to

many charities and his church. He was an active supporter of the pioneer movement for establishing homes in the community for the developmentally disabled population. While serving on the boards of ARC of Somerset County, the ARC of Warren County, and the ARC of New Jersey, he was pivotal in the founding of summer camps for the developmentally disabled.

The Warren County Hall of Fame dinner, presented by the Warren County Community College Foundation, is open to the public. Tables may be reserved. Proceeds from the event benefit students in need, as well as special programs at the college.

Hauntings Around the Area for Halloween

By Elsie Walker alloween will soon be here. Many times on Halloween, or around camp fires, stories of ghosts; strange, creepy or haunted places; and recollections of strange occurrences are shared. Some people pass stories on from generation to generation until they become legend. However, others, like members of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society (NJGHS), investigate strange occurrences to see if there is a paranormal presence involved. Recently, people from around the coverage area shared stories and sightings of local ghosts, rumors of haunted locations, and experiences with the paranormal.

Members of the online, “You Know You’re From Roxbury Township….” group recalled ghost tales and scary sights. One popular ghost story was the Hooker Man. It is about a ghost seen by the Succasunna railroad tracks. “The Hooker Man lost his hand in some freak train accident, and now searches for it with a lantern,” shared Mike Stark, Roxbury. However, it appears the Hooker Man has not only been seen in Roxbury, but Netcong, Flanders, Chester, and Long Valley also lay claim to the legend.

Cheryl McClung, a former area resident, who now lives in Georgia, shared, “At night,

people see his [the Hooker Man’s] lantern bouncing along the tracks in Flanders on the west side of [Route} 206.

Dawn Traetta Hair, of Florida, another former Roxbury resident, remembers the stories of the former location of the Church of the Mystic Light in Flanders. The building is closed, but there had been claims that witches had hung chickens and have had seances there. People still stop by it, out of curiosity, if not scared away.

Kim Howell Candore shared that there have been ghost sightings at her childhood home, “I was raised at 11 Meeker Street [in] Succasunna, next to the cemetery. There has been many spottings of two men in Civil War uniforms smoking, sitting on a tree stump in front of our old house,” said Candore, who now lives in Tennessee. Candore remembers that the two churches on Main Street, adjacent to the cemetery, used to be a military hospital.

Also shared, was that Roxbury has its very own “haunted house” in the form of the Halloween House, a tremendous display put on by the Heard family in Roxbury.

Mayo Performing Arts Center Celebrates 25 Years of Prosperity

By Jerry Del Priore n September 13th, the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) kicked off its 25th anniversary with a fabulous concert by singer/actress and American Idol finalist Katherine McPhee.

MPAC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been at the center of Morristown’s revitalization and is a major reason why it’s a nightlife hotspot today, with several wonderful bars and restaurants lining its lively streets since its inception, according to General Manager Ed Kirchdoerffer.

“Twenty-five years ago, Morristown wasn’t the popular town it is now,” Kirchdoerffer, a Morristown native, said. “We feel the opening of the performing arts center was part of the rebuilding of Morristown. It’s been an anchor for improvement.”

Top musical and comedic acts have performed at MPAC over the years, from Foreigner and Daughtry to Melissa Ethridge and Wayne Brady, and every great entertainer in between.

Moreover, MPAC doesn’t have any plans of slowing down any time soon. Musical performers such as America, Kenny G, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Ruben Studdard will be hitting the stage in October.

“We feel we’re still in a growth cycle,” Kirchdoerffer said. “We constantly challenge ourselves to grow and invest in ourselves to make the best possible events.”

Kirchdoerffer said some of the ways MPAC will be celebrating its 25 years in Morristown are by holding a few free concerts, ask its performance-goers, on social media, to name their favorite moments since its opening, and have a number of $25 ticket offers, to name a few.

However, MPAC is more than a concert hall for some of today’s greatest acts. It also offers a Performing Arts School (PAS), found-

ed in 2006, which now serves approximately 700 students per year with over 20 classes a week within a supportive and creative atmosphere.

Students ages five to 18 come from all over Northern New Jersey to learn performance technique while building confidence and having a great time.

Classes are offered in musical theatre, acting, singing technique, song presentation, improvisation, private voice and adult cabaret.

“The emphasis isn’t placed on being a star,” Kirchdoerffer explained. “It’s placed on being part of a team, being part of the creative process. They really get a full immersive experience. Everyone’s so encouraging of everyone else.”

While most of the kids don’t enter the entertainment world, Kirchdoerffer noted that they will gain valuable skills that will help them succeed in life.

“Most won’t go on to become performers,” he said, “but they will learn important life skills that will go a long way, whether it’s in the boardroom or other areas of work.”

Additionally, MPAC offers The Miracle Project, a fully inclusive music and theatre program for children with autism of all levels.

“It’s been a very powerful program,” Kirchdoerffer said. “This is a program that grew organically. Many parents have spoken about (their experiences) and are happy to see their kids enjoy themselves. This (program) gives them a safe haven. They get to have fun while being themselves.”

There’s also an Art Upstairs Gallery, located in the balcony lobby of MPAC, which showcases visual artists from a variety of disciplines, including watercolor, oils, photography, sculpture and more. Each year, the works of over 200 artists are showcased in

With all the success MPAC has experienced over the last 25 years, Kirchdoerffer said he hopes to see more prosperous years ahead for the Morristown institution, which has been a staple in the thriving town.

“We have been here for 25 years and hope to do it for 25 more years and beyond,” he said. “It’s been the town’s heartbeat.”

She is the author of Ghosthunting New Jersey, Ghosthunting New York City, and Ghosts of the Poconos and has a variety of presentations on the paranormal which will be given at area libraries this month (listed on the bottom of www.njghs.net/presentations.html).

Recently, Hoffman recalled stories she was told of two ghosts who are said to haunt Bea McNally’s (formerly Charlie Brown Restaurant). In 1878, the place was the Clarendon House (hotel) and from 1926-1947 it was the Hackettstown Inn. “The ghost girl appeared to a young girl who was living at the hotel when her family owned it. She snuck down to the kitchen in the middle of the night for some ice cream.

When she was headed out of the kitchen and into the dining room to sneak back upstairs, she was met with this bright, sparkling light and out of the light stepped a young girl – about the same age of the girl sneaking the ice cream – and the ghost girl was dressed from a different time period and clutching her teddy bear. The ice cream girl screamed, dropped the ice cream and ran up to her room. The next day when her parents confronted her about the mess in the dining room, they did not believe her about the ghost girl she saw. However, a couple weeks later, the father saw the ghost girl, too.”

As for the other ghost, Hoffman said there are various origin stories as to who he is. Most have to do with drowning. Two versions have him as a child who was staying upstairs and died while unattended in the bathtub. Hoffman shared that in another

version of the story, “A Lady of the Evening was distraught over unrequited love of one of her clients and she took a bath and drank a bottle of gin and passed out and drowned.” However, most seem to think the ghost is a child as they have got the sensation of someone wanting to ride on their shoulders or putting a small hand into theirs.

Over the years there have been other stories of ghostly presence at the location, such as unexplained footsteps and, when there was a pool hall at the location, how when it was unlocked for business one day, instead of the cleaned pool hall, cues, etc. were strung all over.

In Pompton Lakes, Laura Jennings, a member of the historic commission there, shared about some caring spirits at the Schuyler Colfax house (Hamburg turnpike, Wayne) “Dr. Jane Colfax Young grew up in the house with her father (Dr. Richard S. Colfax) and Aunt (also Dr. Jane Colfax).

Katherine Young, daughter to Jane Colfax Young, shared that she spent a lot of time in the home until he was ten years old. Both her and her father felt and saw things in the house that they are sure were the spirits of their ancestors watching over them. The Colfax family is one of the founding families in the area.”

Jennings also shared that she had heard reports of ghost sightings at the Lenox School in Pompton Plains.

Morristown has had its own dealing with the paranormal. Pat Goodfriend, Membership & Volunteer Coordinator for the Morris County Historical Society shared a short 2016 article by Y. McGreevy on Ford Mansion. The mansion at the Morristown National Historical Park is over 200 years old. Once the home of George Washington (briefly during 1780), the mansion drew the interest of Gordon Thomas Ward, a paranormal investigator, who in 2016, did a

by B. LaMuraglia the same year shows that during the time of his investigation, Ward heard the voices of three male and two female spirits. None were Washington; Ward felt at least one could have been a kitchen servant.

Bells Mansion, near the Netcong-Stanhope border has also been the subject of a paranormal study. That was shared by Tom Lupo of Hopatcong, a producer who followed the NJ Ghost Hunters Society when it investigated the restaurant six years

He looked up and saw a woman, seated in the next room, looking out at the road. He watched her for about 10 seconds and then went to approach her. When he walked into that room, she was gone.

This Halloween, will the Hooker Man or the little girl ghost at Bea McNally’s be seen? Will voices whisper through Ford Mansion or the Lenox School? Perhaps, this year, a new spirit will be seen and its legend begun.

Chief Kelley Zienowicz Becomes Highest Ranking Woman in Morris County Sheriff’s Office

orris County Sheriff James M. Gannon has selected Kelley Zienowicz as the person to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the future.

Kelley Zienowicz, a graduate of the elite FBI National Academy, will be promoted to the rank of Chief Morris County Sheriff’s Officer, the highest-level Officer position in the Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement.

Chief Zienowicz’s promotion will formally take place on Sept. 3, 2019, during a swearing-in ceremony, making her the highest-ranking woman in the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and the sole female chief in Morris County.

“I am so proud to announce the promotion of Kelley Zienowicz to Chief Sheriff’s Officer of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff James M. Gannon

said.

“Chief Zienowicz has a temperament that motivates and energizes others.

She is highly-educated, a graduate of the elite FBI National Academy, and a true leader with an impeccable work ethic.”

“With Chief Zienowicz at the helm of day-to-day operations overseeing all divisions in the Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement, we will accomplish great things which the people of Morris County deserve,” Sheriff Gannon said.

“Not only am I proud to have the backing of the Sheriff, I know this is an important time for the agency as a whole. I hope to bring positive motivation to the agency, from the top to the bottom,” Chief Zienowicz said.

As Chief, she will be responsible for management and day-to-day oversight

over the Bureau of Law Enforcement’s four divisions: Support Services, Protective Services, Legal Services, and Special Services, which includes the Crime Lab and Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

Chief Zienowicz – who has received multiple awards, including the New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award – will be promoted to Chief from her previous rank of Detective Lieutenant.

a civilian clerk-typist assigned to the Internal Affairs Section. Within a year, she was hired as a Sheriff’s Investigator and in 2001, she attended and completed training at the Morris County Police Academy.

Chief Zienowicz was first assigned to the Protective Services Division, which provides security and judicial protection at the courthouse complex.

In August 2001, she was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section – now called Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) – and spent 11 years in the Unit, assisting in multiple criminal investigations throughout Morris County.

She was called as a witness for the prosecution in several high-profile criminal cases in Superior Court between 2003 and 2014.

She was qualified as an expert fingerprint witness in the sexual assault trial and retrial of Andrew Pena, and testified about evidence in the murder trials of Jose Feliciano, convicted of murdering the Rev. Edward Hinds in Chatham in 2009; Anthony Novellino, convicted of killing his former wife, Judith, in Denville; and Carlos Rojas, found guilty of bludgeoning Esteban Hernandez Vazquez and leaving his body in the trunk of a car abandoned in Lincoln Park.

Chief Zienowicz was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in April 2012 and assigned to the Legal Services Division as the Executions and Foreclosure Section Supervisor. That promotion was followed on March 1, 2016, by another advancement to the rank of Detective Lieutenant.

She was assigned the post of Division Commander in the Administrative Division, overseeing Internal Affairs and the Special Operations Section. She then was transferred to the

Protective Services Division in September 2016, where she oversaw the courthouse complex and operations and security at the Dover Probation Office.

One of her most profound pleasures was her nomination to attend the 273rd Session of the prestigious FBI National Academy, a 10-week course of study in Quantico, Virginia, in the summer of 2018. Sheriff Gannon, who backed the nomination, is an FBI National Academy Graduate, as well.

The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement managers who are nominated by their agency heads because of their demonstrated leadership abilities. The program provides coursework on intelligence theory, terrorism, terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, communication and forensic science to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies.

Upon returning from the FBI National Academy, Chief Zienowicz in September 2018 was transferred to the Special Services Division, overseeing CSI, Evidence Section, and the Bomb Unit.

Assisting in the implementation of new tech-

nologies at the Sheriff’s Office, Chief Zienowicz was a member of the Evidence Unit start-up team for the BEAST evidence tracking system, guided implementation of the CivilServe civil process database system in the Executions and Foreclosure Unit, and coordinated use of the new Computer Aided Dispatch System within the Protective Services Division.

Chief Zienowicz has logged a voluminous number of hours on training, including intensive courses on crash reconstruction, supervision of police personnel, shooting analysis and reconstruction, and interpretation of bloodstain patterns.

She has received the Sheriff’s Achievement Award, Exceptional Duty Award, Unit Citation Medal, Professional Service Medal, Educational Achievement Medal-Masters Degree, Morris County Detective’s Association Distinguished Achievement Unit Award, and the NJ Women in Law Enforcement Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award, which is awarded to women who achieve a law enforcement rank of lieutenant or higher.

One in four children deals with a vision impairment that impacts his or her ability to learn, according to eye health and safety organization Prevent Blindness.

Many of these cases are undiagnosed, and failing to identify and treat poor vision health early can lead to difficulties in the classroom, on the playing field and beyond.

One of the most prevalent vision issues in children is myopia, or nearsightedness.

The condition causes close-up objects to appear clear, but everything becomes blurry and out of focus at a distance.

Avoid Overexposure “Today, children’s eyes are exposed to harmful blue light, ultraviolet light (UV) and digital eyestrain like never before,” Parker said.

While technology is crucial for learning in today’s digital world, research suggests too much screen time may put kids at risk of developing myopia as well as digital eyestrain, resulting in tired eyes, headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. To help reduce eyestrain, have children take periodic breaks from their devices and head outdoors.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.

his year’s Annual Vets Summer Fest, benefiting homeless veterans and Operation Chillout, was the biggest ever, with its largest crowd and most money raised. Held at Vasa Park in Mount Olive, the family-friendly event included lots of music, kids activities, a motorcycle run, car show, food, wine, and vendors. Among the bands were national recording artist the Dana Fuchs Band, Atlanta Cafe Band (pictured) and the B-Sides. Operation Chillout is an all-volunteer outreach dedicated to ending to the crisis of homelessness for veterans, men and women throughout New Jersey and parts of NE Pennsylvania by promoting awareness of the multi-faceted nature of poverty and homelessness and advocating for sustainable solutions and programs serving the needs of the poor, addicted, abused and homeless to improve the quality of their lives leading to permanent change and independent living.

Morris County Sheriff’s Office Hope One Staff Trains Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill on Use of Narcan to Reverse Opioid Overdose

nited States Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and seven of her staff members were trained Monday, August 26,

by Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon’s Hope One team on how to use Narcan to reverse an opioid addiction.

Sheriff Gannon and partners in the Hope One mobile substance use resource and recovery program met at the Congresswoman’s 11th Legislative District office in Parsippany after she, earlier in the day, had met with substance use treatment providers in Sussex and Morris counties.

Sheriff Gannon was joined by Robert Davison, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties; MHA Director of Self-Help, Advocacy and Education Madine Despeine-Udoh, MHA Board of Directors Vice President Barbara Small; Kelly LaBar, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist for the Rockaway-based Center for Addiction Recovery, Education & Success (CARES); and Morris County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ashley Craig.

The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties and CARES are partners with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office on Hope One, which was launched on April 3, 2017, to bring critical recovery options and resources to Morris County communities.

Kelly LaBar gave the Congresswoman and her staff a detailed power point presentation on how to recognize an opioid overdose and administer the nasal spray Naloxone, known by the brand name Narcan, to reverse an overdose. Peer Recovery Specialist LaBar used a mannequin to demonstrate the correct way to administer a 4 milligram dose of Narcan and described how substance use disorders imperil not only the users but their families and friends. Addiction is not a source of shame since it affects people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, she said.

“People don’t get better if they have to hide,” Specialist LaBar said.

The Congresswoman told the Sheriff she knows police choose law enforcement careers out of a genuine desire to help people and protect communities. Hope One, she said, has carried that work further by not only teaching the use of Narcan but assisting people with accessing resources.

“To simply give somebody Narcan without more feels a little defeating,” she said.

“To really have other programming that you’re focused on to actually help someone through recovery is really helpful.”

Sheriff Gannon applauded the Congresswoman for her interest and compassion on

the subject of opioid abuse.

“I commend Congresswoman Sherrill and her staff for taking the time to be trained in the use of Narcan and hear about the journey Hope One has been on for the past 28 months to try to curb the heroin and opioid epidemic that doesn’t recognize any economic, race or political boundaries,” Sheriff Gannon said.

MHA Executive Director Davison also praised the presentation and the Congresswoman’s reception to the training.

“One of the things we’ve learned as a society is that the opioid epidemic doesn’t discriminate. Furthermore, we’ve learned we have to cooperate with each other to deal with it. Every family, if not experiencing

it, knows a family that is. No one is spared.

It’s part of the human condition,” Director Davison said.

Through its partnership with CARES and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office’s receipt of a $332,658 grant from the United States Justice Department, Hope One is able to give individuals who are trained in Narcan a free kit of the antidote to use if and when the emergency arises.

The Hope One team, since April 3, 2017, has made contact with more than 8,065 individuals, assisted 147 people in obtaining recovery or rehabilitation treatment, connected 105 people with mental health services, and trained at least 1,891 people on how to use Narcan.

Hackettstown Pastor Publishes Book “Souls Along the Way”

By Elsie Walker little boy who comes to church to pray for his mother before her surgery, a person with Lou Gehrig’s disease whose last wish is to come to worship one last time, and a young mother whose child ran away from her into traffic and was killed by a car, these are some of the souls which Rev. Dr. Frank Fowler III has met along his way. For two decades, Fowler has been sharing vignettes, which illustrate deep points while touching the spirit, through a weekly column, “On My Mind”, in the newsletter of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown. Now, he’s put many of those and other vignettes, in a book, Souls Along the Way. The book is available through Amazon or can be purchased at the church for $12.95. Ten percent of the proceeds of the book sales go to Trinity United Methodist Church Fowler’s column started with a letter to his congregation in 1999. Fowler, the senior pastor at the Hackettstown church, was on renewal leave and away from the church when the Columbine School shooting took place. The first mass school shooting in this country, it shocked many people. Being away, Fowler thought he should send the congregation something to give them support. Not having a computer with him, he found a kiosk PC and sent the congregation a letter which became the first of the weekly, “On My Mind”.

Fowler noted that he doesn’t pre-write any of his weekly columns Some are stories about people; some are on national events. He looks for something relevant to the church and basically shares, “what’s on my mind”, he said. That sharing has garnered hundreds and hundreds of stories. They range from the story of Trey and Jesse, a special Olympics

athlete and his coach to that of a teen from New York.

Stephen, who finds himself lost in Hackettstown and comes to the church to help him get home. Each vignette reflects a greater truth, whether it is about the bond of love or that regardless of the situation, when we are lost, God and the church are there.

In this book, Fowler shares 51 vignettes, some of which are 35 years old. “I think of myself as a storyteller,” said Fowler of his vignettes and those stories he shares in his sermons. He describes the ones he selected for the book as “very compelling” and ones that “begged for telling”.

The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter One covers young souls and has stories of children and young adults. Chapter Two covers inspirational souls, uplifting spirits. Chapter Three is on seeking souls, while Chapter Four is on faithful souls, people who have gone through adversity and persevered.

Chapter Five is “Some Other Souls” and includes stories that didn’t fit into any other category. Included in the book are a few stories from Fowler’s experiences during church mission trips to Haiti, a place near to his heart. Those include being there during an earthquake and baptizing a Haitian baby who died a few months later.

Now that the book is out, Fowler shared his hope for it. “I hope people will reflect on the fact that every person is not just a body, but also a soul created by God [and] that it is the things of the soul that matter most in life,” he said.

What about the stories that didn’t get shared in this book? Fowler already has plans for those, with another book to be called, More Souls Along the Way.
