Investing in the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce is Investing in Your Business and the Community

There’s no vetting committee or anything; if you want to spend your money and come join us, that’s fine.”

By Steve Sears or a peek at what the meaning of the words worthwhile, opportunity, and community are, you’ll unveil the definition by visiting the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce website.

In fact, if you are a business in Mount Olive or the surrounding area, you can live that meaning by becoming a member.

Chamber President Harry Browne, owner of One Legacy Financial Group, LLC, is in his third year as head of the Chamber, which has almost 200 member businesses, and he himself has been a member for nine years, calling it a great business move. “The $125 Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce membership fee is the single best marketing money you can invest in your business. Where else can you invest in marketing your business for the equivalent of $10.42 per month ($125 yearly)? I get to meet a tremendous amount of people, and it works.”

The key is to become a member and participate. Many types of businesses join the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, and Browne’s goal, which is also the goal of the entire Chamber, is to welcome more members. The group finished 2018 with 173 members. So far in 2019, nine new members joined in January and two in February, bringing the new total to 185. Browne suspects the new memberships are due to word-of-mouth from existing members, as well as advertising being seen in Mount Olive Life and radio spots or interviews on WRNJ. “Let the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce help you build your business,” Browne encourages. “We have people and businesses up in Sussex County, we have more and more coming up from Warren County, we have some that come over from Roxbury, we have some that come from Long Valley…we don’t block or prohibit anyone from joining. He then makes a key point. “If you want to have a good experience, you need to participate.”

There’s much to take part in. Consider the variety offered of monthly meetings. Marketing in the Morning is held every third Wednesday, Women in Business on second Tuesdays, the Young Professional Group meets on the first Thursday, and Lunch and Learn is held on the month’s fourth Tuesday.

In addition to the four monthly meetings, the yearly calendar is dotted with networking and comradery events. In January, at a Job Fair at the Holiday Inn held in conjunction with the Mount Olive Economic Advisory Committee, and over 21 local companies were present offering jobs and 225 job seekers attended. Featured in February was the annual Breakfast with the Mayors with over 50 attendees, hosted and sponsored by Longhorn Steakhouse.

All of the before-mentioned events and benefits enable members to build (and continue to build) their businesses. Browne likes to use a key word: build. The Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, whom he coins as “one of the best kept secrets in North West New Jersey,” has always been about building its membership, and building a relationship with the community. “It’s (the Chamber) got deep roots and it has legs,” says Browne, referring to the 1955 beginnings when it was initially known as the Budd Lake Chamber of Commerce and Vernon Geary served as organizational lead. It has also been known as the Mount Olive Businessmen’s Association

(1955-1979), Mount Olive Businessmen’s Association and Chamber of Commerce (1972 and 1972), Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce (1973-1982) and has lived by its current name since 1983. “But it’s come a long way. Back in the day, Hackettstown actually had their own Chamber of Commerce and it was pretty active.” The neighboring community of businesses are now part of what Browne calls a “bigger net.” “It’s the Mount Olive area, so we have a lot of businesses that are literally coming up the road from Hackettstown, but we’re (also) coming down to them, doing a lot of cross promoting, trying to do events around the Hackettstown/Mount Olive area. Even the Director of Hackettstown BID (Business Improvement District) is a member of our Chamber.

We promote and support their events, and vice-versa.”

The group itself also gets involved in other major business organizations. “We’re spreading into a number of other things.

of the International Trade Zone; we participate in that and we usually have one or two representatives there, and we get involved in a couple of community projects with them a year. We get to meet a lot of the key players in big organizations, so that will spill over and help our Young Professionals group, our Women in Business group, things of that nature. Then there’s also the Economic Development Committee out of Mount Olive that we participate in.”

Then there’s the community outreach, such as Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings with township Mayors, sponsorship of assorted events by the Mount Olive Recreation Department and Hackettstown Business Improvement District, and members of MOACC board and committees participate in a number of local community groups and association, like the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) and the Mount Olive Economic Advisory Committee (MOEDC. Browne offers a final thought. “Being a member of a Chamber of Commerce shows you care about the local community that you are doing business with. Attending a periodic network or learning event let’s those members know you want to be part of the community and interested in not only learning more but in meeting other business professionals who also care - longevity in business is not about the sale you made today but more about the clients/customers you have created & earned over 20 years or more.”

It’s been a satisfying half-decade for owner and manager Michelle Jimenez, who was a Simply Protein client long before she became one of the brand’s most passionate advocates.

“It works. And it works quickly,” Jimenez says.

“It’s a tool to get you where you need to go—a tool get you to your goal as quickly as possible,” she adds. “We want to see our

Jimenez has run an event planning firm for many years. She became a Simply Protein advocate after losing her main client, which freed up her time, and after losing 50 lbs. through an Ideal Protein clinic in Livingston— which changed her life.

“The owner and I had become friends,” she says.

“She said, ‘I need someone and you have time on your hands. Come work with me.’ She trained me, and I went for additional training with the company. I already knew the program.”

Ideal Protein uses a four-step method: Phase 1 is about losing the weight; Phase 2 focuses on the ins and outs of how food affects the body; Phase 3 is all about better eating habits and achieving a healthier lifestyle; and Phase 4 is maintenance.

While there are different versions of the keto diet easily found on social media, Jimenez notes that Simply Protein and the Ideal Protein protocols are used by medical professionals across the country; the company’s medical advisory board includes physicians and specialists from gastroenterology to obstetrics and gynecology to endocrinology and pharmacology.

“We contract with [Ideal Protein] to use their products and their protocol,” she says.

Jimenez has a pharmacist on staff to review her clients’ health profiles and to make sure none of the medicines they may be taking would interfere with the program’s requirements. This review is ongoing to keep up with clients’ changing medical information.

“The pharmacist gets all of our health profiles from clients.

Some are on a myriad of different types of pharmaceuticals,” Jimenez says. “We send her those to review to make sure there’s nothing they’re taking that’s going to be an issue in the program.”

Victories are counted in various ways. Jimenez adds up clients’ weekly weigh-ins to assess how well they’re losing weight— walk-in clients lost a total of 157.5 lbs. in January, she notes. That includes only people who come into the office for the program; she also visits various companies in the region and conducts weigh-ins on site.

She also assesses each member’s body mass index, or BMI, weekly to ensure clients are burning fat, not muscle.

“It’s nice to see people losing the weight, but the non-scale victories are the ones we’re excited about,” Jimenez says, noting that eating healthier helps clients achieve more than just a smaller wardrobe.

We see clients coming into the office who have just received a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis from their doctor, and while the initial goal is to lose weight, doing Ideal Protein and adopting a healthier lifestyle, in the long run, will help to lower their blood sugar into healthy, normal ranges. Being healthy is really everyone’s main goal.”

Lowering sugar intake levels can help people with a variety of health issues such as ADHD, autism and bipolar disorders as well. “We have a lot of doctors sending people our way,” she says.

“They’ll walk in and say, ‘I don’t care how I look, but my health though is everything to me.’”

Jimenez does not work with anyone under the age of 18 unless medically referred by a physician; she also does not take on clients having Type 1 Diabetes, as the keto protocol could be life threatening to them. “The last thing you want to do is harm anyone’s health with a weight loss protocol,” she says.

Simply Protein provides a variety of foods for its clients, from omelets to milkshakes to snack foods, and has varieties that are dairy-free and gluten-free. Jimenez works with clients who are vegetarian and vegan as well. Clients who have completed the program and are in Phase 4—maintenance—often come back to buy the food products because they really like them, she adds.

The one thing that surprises her clients most is how often— and how much—they are directed to eat on the program, Jimenez says. “They eat more than normal,” she says.

“I tell them, think about your body as a fireplace. The wood is food. The fire is your metabolism. If you put all the wood in the fireplace at once, the fire goes up big and burns out,” she says.

“But if you put in a little wood at a time, you get a consistent slow burn. This program sparks your metabolism to continuously burn.”

the toxins created by the bacteria will erode the gums and underlying bone. The bone will then deteriorate, and melt away from the implant. The more the bone loss, the more damaged the dental implant / bone interface becomes, and eventually you may lose the implant. You may have no feeling or sensation in your mouth as this process starts or continues.

Another arena of gums and dental implants includes the type of gum tissue present. Basically, there are two types of gum tissue: keratinized (thick, non-mobile gum tissue) and non-keratinized (also known as mucosa), which is thin and mobile.

This quality of gum tissue around dental implants (also known as “biotype”) is extremely important. Thick, non-mobile gum tissue is absolutely preferred over thin, mobile gingiva around dental implants.

It is important to know that the quality of gum tissue can be addressed / corrected around dental implants, but ideally you would want to address it before the dental implants are placed.

It is more resistant to abrasion from eating, toothbrushing, and general activity. The more mobile the gum tissue, the more susceptible the dental implant becomes to failure since the gum may erode from noxious stimuli. As the gum recedes, the bone will follow, and a negative pathway of bone loss around your dental implant ensues, putting your dental implant at risk of failing.

All too often I need to speak to new dental implant patients about the quality of gum tissue described above (biotype). It is not unusual for patients to be interviewing multiple dentists to determine who they want to provide their dental implant care.

If they have already visited one or two other offices and then come to me, they are skeptical when they hear me speaking about this topic if it applies to them. I understand this skepticism, but it is a very important and critical area that should not be overlooked. They are entitled to know about this often overlooked topic, because more often than not it will affect the health of their implant over time. I have had to remove many implants that failed due to this problem.

Gum grafting procedures are usually the best way to improve the situation.

A person’s health is another important component for the success of dental implants with respect to the gums. Systemic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease directly affect the gingiva. Medications can affect both the gums and bone, such as Calcium Channel Blockers (ie: Dilantin), SSRIs (Lexapro, Proazc, Zoloft), bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, Zometa), and Proton Pump Inhibitors (ie: Prilosec, Previcid).

tudent-built robots from 38 high school teams in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts will battle each other in the Mid-Atlantic District FIRST Robotics Competition (www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc) at Mount Olive High School on March 9 and 10. In conjunction with the competition, the school will host its second “Marauder Maker Fest,” featuring science and technology activities for all ages, on March 9. Both events are free and open to the public.

The robots will compete for district rankings in a game called Destination: Deep Space. Using an outer-space theme, the competition requires robots to team up to place hatch panels on their rockets and cargo ship. The teams also need to load cargo for transport off the planet and return safely back to their habitats.

They must complete this all before they are faced with a sandstorm.

Top-ranked robots from district competitions advance to regional and, potentially, world robotics events later this spring.

Teams also compete for various awards, including the prestigious Chairman’s Award for its overall program. The Mount Olive competition, which annually attracts more than 2,000 students, parents and community members, this year will include robots from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as well as teams from Morris, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, Passaic, Essex, Union, Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, and Mercer counties.

“I personally am so excited to work on this event, and to work in a school district that is so progressive and forward-thinking about STEAM [Science, Technology Education, Arts, Math] and engineering and technology,” said Ernie DiCicco, MORT mentor and coordinator of the Mount Olive district competition. He noted high school Principal Kevin Stansberry’s ongoing support for the robotics program and event, and how he has scheduled the Maker Fest two years in a row to coincide with the multi-state competition.

Mountaintop Church: A Place of Love and Acceptance

by Elsie Walker “The love and acceptance there,” said Bonnie Jantzen, of Hackettstown, when asked what drew her to become a congregation member at Mountaintop Church in Mt. Olive. Jantzen has been a member for 17 years; she and her husband were also married there 17 years ago. She found support there during tough times in her marriage and raised her children in the church, where they are now involved in the Worship Team. Love and acceptance are threads running through this church, and are not only experienced by the adults, but also by the youth and children, especially in special programs for them. Jantzen shared that the Senior Pastor, Rev. Matt Jones, “always sees the best in people. He is a wonderful example of a Godly man.”

ones came to Mountaintop Church, an Assemblies of God church, 17 years ago. He had been the principal of a Christian school in Livingston and had briefly pastored a small church in Middlesex before he came to Mountaintop Church. He and his wife, Diane, have been married 29 years. They have three children: Matthew, Anthony, and Dionna.

“My goal is to share the forgiveness and the love of Christ,“ said Jones. He shared that he’s seen changes in many people’s lives as a result of taking in that message. Jones said that today many people struggle and so he tries to make faith practical and real for them.

Mountaintop Church was found in the 1980’s by pastor Ken Young, a quadriplegic, and originally named Bethesda Christian Church. Young’s goal was to offer hope to the handicapped.

However, by the 1990’s, the church’s name had been changed

to Mountaintop Church and Young had developed health complications and could no longer pastor. When Jones arrived, the congregation only numbered about a dozen people and Jones thought he was coming to close the church. Instead, working with the determined congregation, the church grew.

Today, Mountaintop Church has two English services and one Spanish service on Sundays.

The English services are held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Nursery care is available for infant through age two during the services.

The services are contemporary and “make tremendous use of video and other media,” said Jones. Drawing on his background in, and love of, photography and videography, plus using different sets and a green screen, Jones will make short videos that run before his Sunday messages. In them, he becomes familiar characters like Sherlock Holmes or Marty McFly (of the Back to The Future movie series). The videos help him share spir-

itual truths in a relatable way, with titles like, “It’s Elementary – Clues to a Solid Foundation in Christ.” Before and after the services, there is a hospitality time with Jones doing a “meet and greet” once a month.

There are educational offerings held Sunday morning as well. Two different adult Bible studies are held at 9:30 a.m. and Mountaintop Kids Church is held during the 10:30 a.m. service for ages 3 – 11. The children start out in the adult service and are then dismissed to their own time of worship and spiritual growth.

Jones likes to empower people and an example of that is the Spanish service held at 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Sixteen years ago, Moises Gomez and his wife became part of the congregation at the church. They had come from Puerto Rico. Jones recognized Gomez’s gift to teach and preach. With the growing Hispanic community in the area, Jones suggested that Gomez start a Spanish speaking service. That contemporary service, and the Spanish ministry, have flourished. Jones noted Gomez’s warm and welcoming nature. He shared that if even just one English-speaking person visits the service, Gomez

will offer translation.

Quarterly, there is a combined English-Spanish service.

The church offers growth and fellowship activities for adults and children from the church and community.

There are men’s and women’s seasonal Bible studies.

Every Wednesday night, there’s something for just about everyone. At 7:00 p.m., there is an adult Bible study where participants can growth spiritually and relationally. For children and youth, there are weekly Wednesday night programs starting at 7:15 p.m. that empower them and help them to grow in God’s love: Youth Refuge, Mpact Girls, and Royal Rangers.

Youth Pastor Kody Vagle leads the Youth Refuge, which is for middle school and high school youth. Vagle noted that today some youth are bullied; some feel like they don’t fit in. At Refuge, all are welcomed. Vagle explained that the name, Refuge, comes from the Bible, Psalms Chapter 46, verses 1 – 2: “God

is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” Vagle said, “[We want] students to come and find God as their ultimate refuge.”

A Refuge meeting usually includes a welcome/”hangout time”, games, singing worship songs, announcements, a message, and closing/”hangout time”.

Vagle explained that there are four core values of Refuge.

The first is “you are loved by us and God,” he said. The second he shared is “you belong”. The third is about purpose. “Everyone has a purpose,” Vagle shared. The last value is “You are royalty.” He explained that the youth learn “they are valued and are co-heirs of the Creator and King”.

Refuge youth participate in a variety of activities. Vagle gave some examples. There is a youth rally to kick off sum-

mertime. It is an all-night event including a live band, games, and activities. For a winter retreat, the youth go to Blue Mountains Christian Retreat in Pennsylvania. Recently, a color war was held where youth pelted each other with colored powder. “Missions is very big on my heart,” shared Vagle. Refuge youth participate in reaching out to help others.

An example of that was going to Houston for a week last summer to help with hurricane relief through Convoy of Hope.

There the Refuge youth gave out groceries to about 300 families and prayed with them.

In addition to Refuge, there are programs for children age Kindergarten through 5th grade. Vagle said, “[they] are almost like Christian Scouts…children can earn badges” These groups are Mpact Girls and Royal Rangers, led respectively by volunteers Ruth and Martin Weiss of Flanders.

“We meet on Wednesday nights, September through June, from 7:15 p.m. to

8:30 p.m., shared Ruth Weiss about both groups. “Boys and girls can earn badges and we have our own uniforms,” she added. Examples of things done in each group’s meeting are hearing Bible stories, memorizing Bible verses, working on activity pages and doing crafts. The groups also participate in events such as camp outs (Girlz Retreat for the girls and Pow Wows for the boys), sectional and district events, such as All for Girls Day, Ranger Kid Field Day, Girls Ministries Discovery Day, Pinewood Derby, etc. “During these events, we get together with other [Assemblies of God]

churches from the State of New Jersey and have a Bible devotional, fun and fellowship,” shared Weiss. However, she noted that there are other churches that are not Assemblies of God that run these programs as well and attend their events.

Outreach is important to this church’s congregation. Two key outreaches are the Mt. Olive Food Pantry and the church’s Easter Drive Thru.

Jones notes that Mountaintop Church works hand in hand with Christ Episcopal Church on the Mt. Olive Pantry. (The Episcopalian church houses the pantry which helps about 120 families a month.) As explained on the pantry’s website (www. mountolivepantry.org), “Originally, Mount Olive Pantry started out as a small office in the Township’s municipal building. In 2013, Mayor Rob Greenbaum wanted to expand the pantry’s services and asked Pastor Matthew Jones and Reverend Sonia Waters if they could help to expand the pantry and its services for the people of Mount Olive. Both pastors visited a number of pantries to observe operational format, and in 2014, Mount Olive Pantry was privatized under the direction of Partners in Compassion, a charitable 501c3 organization. The physical pantry was relocated in late spring to its present location …[and] the office for the Mount Olive Pantry, a subsidiary of Partners in Compassion is located [at Mountaintop Church}.

The Easter Drive Thru is held on Good Friday and the Saturday before Easter (weather permitting) in the parking lot of the church. Cars come into the parking lot and each is given a

pre-recorded narration. As they follow a route in the lot, there are stops along the way. At each stop, a scene from Christ’s life is shown (manger scene, Jesus’ miracles, Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, burial and resurrection). Jones noted about 50 church members are involved in running the event: from acting to creating scenery. At the end of the route, there is an opportunity to pray with the pastor. The program runs each night from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

In reflecting on the church and its congregation, Jones shared, “we have a community here who loves each other.”

Where Everyone is Irish On March 9, Morris County will celebrate with their 40th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade throughout Morristown

By Megan Roche n Saint Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish and once again on March 9, Morris County will celebrate with their 40th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade throughout Morristown.

The first unofficial parade in Morristown took place in the year of 1780 when George Washington gave the Irish men in the militia the day off to honor Saint Patrick. The first official Saint Patrick’s Day Parade occurred in Morris County in 1979 in Wharton. The parade is put on annually by the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick Morris County Chapter and the Irish American Association of North West Jersey.

How does this parade come together each year? With a ton of work. The team begins planning shortly after Saint Patrick’s Day. The biggest Saint Patrick’s Day celebration in Morris County, work for the following years celebration must begin as early as possible.

To put on any parade, money is definitely a requirement. The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade committee is always thinking ahead. This parade is one that comes at no cost to Morris County residents, for anything. See portable bathrooms? The parade committee pays for that. Extra police around Morristown on the day of the parade? The committee takes care of paying all overtime pay.

Think the fundraisers are like anything you’ve seen before? You’d be wrong. One of the most popular events in Morristown around the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is the Grand Marshal’s on Tap evening. Held every year at Grasshopper Irish Pub, this year’s Grand Marshal, Father Pat-

“The parade itself is always exciting. It’s a great family day. The parade is far reaching throughout the entire county. It’s local, but it’s got a reach that a lot of smaller parades don’t have.

It’s a family flair and a local flair that you won’t find anywhere else.” Murphy said.

rick O’Donovan, of Notre Dame Mount Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls, was pouring drinks throughout the night to help raise funds for the parade.

Another popular fundraiser is that of the Publicity Tour. The tour took place on Feb. 22 and included nothing but music and fun.

The committee visited each sponsor of the parade and brought with it a bagpipe band and Irish step dancers. The committee puts this event on each year to help bring awareness to the local merchants that the parade is coming up very soon.

The committee also sells pins and magnets each year to commemorate the parade. Magnets and pins are sold by various Morris County businesses. There is also a parade journal and sponsorships for local businesses.

Mike Leavy, a member of the parade committee, has been marching in the parade since he was a little boy. He now carries on the tradition with his son marching alongside him.

“Morristown has a very Irish history and parts are named after places in Ireland. There is such history of Ireland in Morristown. Here we are today still celebrating Saint Patrick and a holiday that means a lot to me and the Irish people as a whole.

I’m proud to march in it but I was always proud to watch it as a youngster.” Leavy said.

A parade to honor Saint Patrick’s Day isn’t complete without the addition of the coveted pipe and drum bands, high school marching bands, fire trucks, police cruisers, and local and county dignitaries. The Morristown Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is Morris County’s largest Saint Patrick’s Day celebration.

“We have had bands from as far away as Boston and Baltimore each year. We even have bands who have nothing to do with Irish music that just enjoy the atmosphere in Morristown.”

Brian Carroll, another parade committee member, said.

2018 Grand Marshal, former Morris County Freeholder and Morris Committeeman, John Murphy, was quick to note what the parade means to him and his family.

One thing that the committee prides itself on is the alcohol-free celebration atmosphere at the parade.

Parade day begins with a 10:00 a.m. mass to honor St. Patrick at Assumption Church. The parade is set to step off at noon. The event is family friendly, from 0-100. Pre-parade activities include arts and crafts, music performances and more.

“It’s an alcohol-free parade and it’s a great time. It’s family friendly, the people participating in it love it. It’s everything you can think of about celebrating being Irish or just enjoying the Irish heritage. Get here early enough and get your spot, the bands are booming from beginning to end.” Leavy said.

The 2019 Grand Marshal is Father Patrick “Paddy” O’Donovan. The pastor of Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls is thrilled to be selected as the Grand Marshal.

Father O’Donovan was born and raised in Bruff, County Limerick, Ireland. He studied at Saint Patrick National School and Saint Muchins College, Limerick before completing his studies for the priesthood at Saint Patrick College, Carlow. He was ordained on June 10, 1972 in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow and celebrated his fist mass in his home parish SS. Peter and Paul in Bruff.

Father O’Donovan came to the United States shortly after he was ordained, serving as parochial vicar at Saint Joseph’s Parish in Newton. He also taught theology part time at Pope John High School. Father O’Donovan received his Master’s Degree in Education from Fordham University in 1979. Before becoming the pastor of Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church, he was the pastor of Christ the King Church in New Vernon.

Looking for some tips for parade day? Best places to watch the parade include by the Morristown Green which is where you will find the grandstand. Other popular viewing areas include anywhere along South Street and Washington Street. The parade ends at Morristown High School and roughly runs for about two hours.

“It really is just a great day,” Leavy said. “If you can get into town before the parade starts and you get a good spot, it’s a great time. We’ve had crowds as big as 55,000 at this parade. If the weather is great, the sky is the limit as to how many people will come out.”

The parade is held rain (or should we say snow?) or shine.

When a crazy snowstorm blew through Morristown last year, the parade’s faithful followers still came out with whipping winds and bitter cold temperatures to honor the patron saint of Ireland, armed with blankets and layers of clothes.

“We have a ton of families who line the parade route and the groups we have marching in the parade and our pre parade activities are always geared toward families. I think it’s one of the biggest events in Morris County throughout the year. Our family aspect is what really sets as apart.” Arthur Flynn, another committee member, said.

Each year, the parade donates much of its funds back into the Morris County community and beyond. Past recipients of monies include Morristown High School Project Graduation, the Brendan Tevlin Foundation, Employment Horizons, the Interfaith Food Pantry, Family Promise, Dress for Success, and the Anne Hennessey Fund among others.

The placement was not surprising for Edward Dennis, Assistant Vice President, Berkeley College Office of Military and Veterans Affairs (OMVA). Berkeley has been ranked before. “Interestingly enough, we moved up,” he says, “and it was pretty sig-

nificant (the jump in ranking). There are some criteria that everybody is evaluated on.

You submit all of your documents, and all the criteria are weighted. It’s kind of like going to class. What’s your ranking in the class? Who has the highest-grade point average? So, in doing that we moved up in ranking in the ‘class’ because we increased our overall performance based on the metrics they look at.” As a retired Army Major, the

recognition means even more to Dennis. “Everyone knows who U.S. News and World Report is. So, as a veteran, if I’m looking at colleges I want to attend, that’s going to be a part of my evaluation criteria.”

The OMVA was formed in 2009. The post-9/11 GI Bill was passed, and for the first time since World War II, there was a large influx of veterans returning from overseas that started attending college. “When that happened,” says Dennis, “ a lot of schools really weren’t prepared for it.” Recognized were needs for veterans returning home that are unique: adult learners whose lifetime experiences were different.

“There are a lot of studies that show different things you can do to provide the best environment for them. So, that’s what many of the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs has done, look at how we can enrich and improve the experience for the students that are here.”

Berkeley College has seven campuses where 450 veterans in the system attend classes, and they can do so either online or at the physical school itself. Berkeley also has a Virtual Veterans Resource Center set up on its website that students can access a variety of resources.

Gabrielle Peralta joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. “The reason I joined was because my grandpa served in the Army during World War II.” Peralta researched other colleges before picking Berkeley, finding Veterans Affairs representatives were not in their office and one didn’t have a veteran’s affairs represen-

tative on campus. When she visited Berkeley to apply, Tami Pichardo, Veterans Affairs representative at the Woodland Park campus, was present, explaining to Peralta what she needed to do to attend the institution. Peralta was sold on the worth of Berkeley College, and a special friend aided her decision. “Also, having Skyla the therapy dog in the office also sealed the deal for me coming to Berkeley. My relationship with Skyla - I’m her best friend. She helps me with the PTSD that I have, and in return I play and walk her when she needs it.”

to be able to go back and help veterans go to school. A little under 90% of servicemen are first generation in their family to go to college. So, they can’t call home and ask, ‘What’s a bursar?’ or ‘What’s a registrar?’, which are words you don’t hear anywhere else in the world. It’s kind of confusing to navigate through, so I help bridge that gap, because I myself am a first generation in my family to go to college. So, it’s nice to inspire them, to let them know they can achieve more than they thought they could.”

Dennis every semester also writes a letter to every student who scores a 4.0 GPA. “I write them a letter and I give them a little gift.”

He then adds with a smile, “I had to write 68 of them last semester.”

Josephine Cornacchia, who served 5 years in the United States Air Force, began attending Berkeley College during the winter 2017 semester.

She is also seeking a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Management and serves as Vice President of the Woodland Park Spartans. Cornacchia has a certificate in Culinary Arts from Eva’s Kitchen in Paterson, and her instructor in that realm was also a veteran who attend-

ed Berkeley and sang its praises as a veteran-friendly school. “I actually live in Woodland Park, so it’s very convenient and it worked out.” Her plans are to combine her culinary talents with her eventual business degree and forge a nice future.

Of the OMVA, Cornacchia says, “I go there often. I ask questions, get information, and they’re very helpful. Berkeley College works very well with veterans. I think it’s good to have veterans in a school setting; I think we add something to the classroom with our experiences.”

The Woodland Park Spartans are a new club, and they believe in giving back. “We are just kind of learning as we go,” says Cornacchia.

“Last semester we did a fundraiser with Saint Joseph’s (University Medical Center in Paterson), we got a bunch of toys and donated them to the Hematology and Oncology units at Saint Joseph’s for Christmas for all the kids. We like to do drives and help people. So, we also want to be there for veterans, because a lot of veterans have different issues and they feel comfortable talking with someone in the same situations as they were.”

Dennis elaborates on how the OMVA benefits veteran students in a few ways. “The Department of Education, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, three different departments of the government– rules conflict, it’s confusing, so we kind of help them (veterans) navigate through that. They may fall under all three with their benefits if they’re actively serving, have their GI Bill, and are going to college. We guide them to resources in the community and help them out.”

“In talking to veterans regularly and getting to know them, you can tell if something’s not right for somebody.

Sometimes I, or one of the staff, will pull them aside and ask, ‘Are you alright?’ All of the sudden they’ll open up.

We’ll ask them, ‘Do you know about this resource?’ or make a phone call with them there and put them in touch with the right person to eliminate some of those barriers so they can focus on what they’re ultimate goal is, to graduate from college, get the career that they want, and provide better for their families.”

A special Veterans Graduation Gala will be held on March 28 at the Chart House in Weehawken to honor the hard-working folks who served and studied. “It’s not the graduation ceremony,” says Dennis, “but it’s to highlight them in an environment where it’s for the veterans.”

The big goal for Dennis and OMVA is to change the veteran cultural mindset. “One little thing,” he said.

“When things start to go wrong, reach out to other veterans or reach out for help. Don’t put your head down and drive harder forward. If it’s not working, reach out to us. I just want that little cultural mind shift to recognize that if things aren’t going right, ask what support is out there to help you out.”

He adds in conclusion, “For any veteran, they earned their GI Bill. It’s not a benefit just given to them. They earned it. So as with anything you earn, they should really know about where they want to go (to school).

Don’t rush into a decision, go talk to the student veterans, go look at the campus.”
