By Jason Cohen ome dreams do come true. Keturah Orji of Mt. Olivehas been an athlete her entire life and now her fantasy of being in the Olympics is a reality. On July 7, Orji, 20, qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when she jumped 14.60 meters in the triple jump. “It was kind of surreal that it happened, Orji exclaimed. “It’s like ‘wow I’m going to the Olympics’. I think I’m not going to grasp it until I’m there. Orji’s athletic career started with gymnastics in second grade, but she found her true calling in high school on the track. She started out sprinting and then transitioned to the long jump. In 2013, things began to change. Orji won the U.S. Outdoor Nationals track and field event in North Carolina and later that year, joined the World 18 and Under Youth Track and Field Team. That team competed in Ukraine at the World Youth Games and she received a bronze and silver medal. “I think this is when I knew I was at the elite level of track and field, she remarked. She broke high school, county and state records for the triple and long jump. In 2014, she began her collegiate career at the University of Georgia, where she credits her coach Petros Kyprianou with making her a better jumper and runner. “When I came to college I didn’t really know how to jump at all, Orji said. Some of Orji’s achievements include: 2015 Southeastern Conference Indoor, Outdoor Champion (triple jump), 2015 First Team Indoor All-American (triple jump), 2015 Second Team Indoor All-American (long jump) and the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Champion (triple jump). While no one in her family is a track star or Olympic athlete, she credits her success to her parents Nicole and Anthony. Orji recalled that during her freshman year in college she felt a lot of pressure and would often pray with her mom before races. Her mother who is still on cloud nine, spoke to the Mt.
Olive News about her daughter. As Keturah began to shatter records, she and her husband had to quickly learn what the triple and long jump were, she said. When she won nationals in 2013, Nicole knew her daughter had what it took to compete at the next level. “That was the first time that I got the idea that she was going to go somewhere with this triple jumping, she said. “She always had a dream to go to the Olympics. Mt. Olive Sees Success In Visible Learning Initiative
By Ashley Bouwense he Mt. Olive School District focused on introducing programs geared to get students thinking, and these learning initiatives proved to be successful throughout the district this year. The 2015-2016 school year was all about Visible Learning, a term the district used from a study conducted by Professor John Hattie, researcher in education. According to visible-learing.org, Visible Learning occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own teachers. One example of how Mt. Olive practiced this method was in introducing three grading periods in the elementary schools as opposed to the customary four. The one less grading period lent time for an additional parent-teacher conference and, this year, the schools decided to have their students present what they learned to their parents in the meetings. “It’s a really great program for students,” Superintendent Larry Reynolds said. “The students talked about what they learned, how they learned what they did and where they need to work harder. Parents said that they never heard their kids talk that much before.” Technology grew tremendously this year. The district implemented 1,000 computers and, with the computers, the schools instituted Google Classroom and other new soft-
ware systems. With Google Classroom, teachers are able to see their students’ work immediately, and they can ask respond and ask questions to the children as they work. The district enhanced internet connectivity by 15 megabits— more than 50 percent of its usual connectivity—and the number of hours that students worked online rose dramatically. The high school’s robotic teams made history at the Grand National Robotics Championship in St. Louis. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams won awards at the competition, and the junior varsity Beta Team placed at Nationals. Mt. Olive did not simply use robots to compete; the district used them for in-school community purposes, too. Homebound students attended school virtually this year after the district procured five VGo Robots. The students drove the four-foot-tall robot remotely from their laptops; through the robots mobility, the children went to classes, raised their hands and participated in class discussion. The user saw everything the robot was exposed to on his or her laptop and the robot displayed the user’s face on its screen. The district reduced the number of standardized assessments from kindergarten through eighth grade through the STAR 360 program by Renaissance Learning. In this initiative, the schools combined all of their standardized tests into one, comprehensive assessment that allowed educators
to screen and group students for targeted instruction, measure student growth, predict performance on PARCC exams and monitor achievement on Common Core State Standards. The 36-question test uses an algorithm to measure what questions each student should receive based on the answers they give. If a student answers a question correctly, he or she will be given a more advanced question next; however, if they answer incorrectly, the student will answer on the same level at which he or she answered originally. Simply by instituting this form of individualized testing, Mt. Olive has seen student gain rates raise from seven percent to 15 percent. Mountain View School gained national recognition after 500 elementary students rated fifth-best performance in the First in Math program in all U.S. schools. The First in Math website explains, “First In Math modules reinforce mastery of basic facts, decimals, fractions, integers, exponents, variables and order of operations. Many of the games introduce principles of algebra as early as kindergarten, first and second grade.” Students have collectively answered more than six million math questions; this is the third year Mountain View participated in the program. Out of all the impressive feats the district accomplished this year, the most popular hit of the spring season was continued on page 4

She and her husband will be traveling with their other children, Linda, 29, Anthony, 23 and Rachel, 15. In order to help them with these financial burdens, she started a crowdsourcing fundraiser online at https://www.gofundme.com/KOJUMPER. So far it has raised $10,000 with a goal of $30,000. They are only permitted two free tickets and two extra ones, so one child will be sitting with random people. with; they put their money where their mouth is. They invest in our schools and make things really happen.” The Mt. Olive School District accomplished so much in the sciences, mathematics and arts this year, and it looks forward to seeing its talented students inspire humanity again this fall.

Local Students Perform In Europe With Sussex County Youth Orchestra
By Brianna Kudisch rianna Boelens had never been to Europe before this year, but she was recently able to experience it with her fellow orchestra members as part of the Sussex County Youth Orchestra. Led by Dawn and Gerald Tedesco, the Sussex County Youth Orchestra was started in 1987 after Dawn saw the lack of string programs in Sussex County. She then founded the group to make up for the inadequacy and to allow students nearby to further their string musical abilities. Boelens, a rising junior at Mt. Olive High School student, and 75 other people, including one other MOHS student, Devon Smith, 53 young musicians and professional mentors, spent June 25 – July 3 traveling to Vienna, Austria, Prague, Czech Republic, and Berlin, Germany, all while practicing and playing along at various stops. The group performed at the National Opera House in Prague, playing on the same stage that the Prague Philharmonic
has often practiced and performed on, and they also held a concert at OrangerieSchonbrunn in Vienna, as part of the American Celebration of Music. The preparation leading up to the tour had been developing since October of last year, as the group played music from both their holiday and spring concerts. As more time passed, however, practices lengthened from hour and a half long ones to three hour rehearsals. Despite the multiple performances in various cities, the musicians found time to also tour the area and major historical sites, such as the graves of composers Bach and Mozart in Austria. The group additionally explored the last remaining piece of the Berlin Wall in Germany, a Holocaust memorial site in the Czech Republic and the Soviet War Memorial in Germany. “You always learn about things such as the Holocaust in school, but being in the square where the infamous book burning occurred or walking around a concentration camp in Germany, you are seeing every-
thing you've only read and talked about, first hand,” said Boelens, who plays clarinet. “It's quite amazing being in the presence of these monumental places and locations of events that are known worldwide.” Each time the orchestra visited a new city, they would receive a new city guide, one on each of the two buses they traveled in, to help them tour the area and see the influential sights. A truck full of their musical instruments followed the two buses due to the limited space available. Orchestra members paid for the trip individually, with some finances raised for the whole group from a candy and a coffee fundraiser set aside for bus transportation. The orchestra also receives a grant from Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council and an additional one from the New Jersey
State Council on the Arts. The trip helped sharpen the musician’s skills and performance abilities, all while giving them an international travel experience they won’t soon forget. From performing on famous stages to seeing historical landmarks that have shaped the modern world, these young musicians have seen music and history brought to life. “Europe, as a whole, has history with every corner you turn,” says Boelens. “There's a different story with every single building and I think it's really amazing how much of history has been left behind for us to enjoy now.” Tedesco also saw the value in combining music with travel. “It’s almost like music camp but touring Europe,” said Tedesco.

A Little Dirt Never Hurt At The Fourth Annual Raiders Of The Lost Park Mud Run
By Ashley Bouwense t. Olive’s fourth annual Raiders of the Lost Park Mud Run attracted 576 participants who slipped and slid through 16 obstacles of muddy fun 9 a.m. Sat., June 18 at Turkey Brook Park. The 5K mud run proved to be the best one the town has organized to date with the most participants and obstacles the run has had since its start in 2013. Racers gathered at the park to check-in at 8 a.m. until the run began at 9 a.m. DJ Louis filled the field with lively music, Philly Pretzel of Hackettstown sold food and drinks and Marty’s Ice Cream sold frozen treats. There were 22 waves of runners scheduled to participate that day. The first seven waves included only adult teams, the last two waves were designated just for children, and the rest of the waves in the middle were for adult and child teams. Each wave of approximately 25 people was sent out in fiveminute increments. A stand-alone, 3-mile run is challenging
alone, but the added 16 muddy obstacles were an added test of endurance. Obstacles like the Mud Pits, Tube Crawls and Mud Bog Log Balance were sure to get runners saturated with mud from head to toe. The Mud Pits were the overwhelming fan-favorite, where runners ran over dirt hills and slogged through pools of three-foot-deep mud water. Some people lost shoes in the sloshy mess! “This was my first mud run!” college student and second wave runner, Kelly Wenham, said. “My favorite obstacle was walking across logs over pools of mud. It was probably the most challenging for me, and it was awesome to hear the people in line cheering you on the whole time.” Teams also loved the last part of the race: the giant, soapy slip and slide where runners slid into a victoriously sudsy finish. At the end of the race, mud-soaked runners could wash off under fire hoses and then enjoy refreshments from local vendors. The Mt. Olive Parks and Recreation Decontinued on next page

Learn Self Defense... continued from page 10 “My father always wanted me to be involved in martial arts,” says Altinbas, for self-defense reasons. “I started in karate,” he says when he lived in Turkey. “I was an outof-hand kind of child,” he explains. “I was aggressive. They wanted to calm me down and teach me discipline.” As part of a “small population of Armenians” growing up in Turkey, Altinbas was a minority and was picked on often. “It was tough growing up like that. I was always in a fight trying to defend myself. When they have something against me, you have to do something.” When Altinbas was 18, he moved to the United States and that was when he started to learn Tae-Kwan-do and Hap-Ki-Do, and also cross trained in kickboxing and Sambo, eventually earning a variety of black belts in different forms of mixed martial arts. He has a six-degree black belt under Grand Master Ian A. Cyrus in Hap-Ki-Do, a Korean Martial Arts Self-Defense form using kicking and punching techniques and joint
manipulations; a third-degree black belt in Tae-Kwan-Do with Grand Master Duke Lee; and a black belt in Hayastan Grappling System under Grand Master Gokor Chivichyan and Grand Master Judo Gene LeBell. “All my life, I’ve been doing this,” says Altinbas. At Victor’s Mixed Martial Arts, three other instructors help teach classes with Altinbas, providing a variety of styles to each workout. He offers classes for children three years old and up such as Tae- Kwan-Do and Judo. Women can enjoy a ladies only kick-box class or try an adult MMA or self-defense classes called Hap-Ki-Do offered on Friday evenings. To add even more variety, he offers an Irish Stick Fighting class every other Sunday and will soon be adding yoga classes. The Art of Dance is hosting a stellar line up of faculty for their 16th annual Summer Dance Intensive and Ballet Intensive in July. Kat Wildish, formerly of New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater along with Kenny Easter directly off the American Ballet Theater (ABT) season at the Met are teaching a weeklong intensive of ballet that includes partnering, technique and choreography from Romeo & Juliet. While the dancers are receiving the best possible ballet training, these amazing teachers keep it upbeat and positive while challenging the dancers so that they enjoy working hard to accomplish the difficult but beautiful art of ballet. What makes this week of dance different is that these teachers make ballet so much fun. This ballet Intensive runs from July 25-29 for dancers nine to 19 years. Guest teachers at the Dance Intensive include an incredible faculty of teachers direct from the Broadway stage. Michael Cusamano – An American in Paris / Chicago; So You Think You Can Dance Tour,
Alexia Meyer season 12; and Jon Bond from the Netherlands Dance Company, touted as the best dance company in the world. Bond is formerly of Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance Co. who has a way of getting dancers to move in a new and expressive way and shed their inhibitions and is a favorite particularly with the teenagers. The Art of Dance, which is known for its great tap dancers and strong tap program is excited to welcome Sarah Savelli, just off a tour with Savion Glover. It’s amazing to see how she shares her knowledge with the students and manages to get the young dancers to move their feet at lightning speed. Also joining the intensive line up are current faculty members Jen Savelli-Montaldi who appeared in six Broadway shows including Spider Man and Boy from Oz and a former Rockette; and Linsey O’Neal of Dana Foglia Dance Company. New this year is Legally Blonde Musical Theater Camp with Cari Sanchez. Cari originated the role of Margot/Elle in Legally Blonde the Musical at sea on the brand new Norwegian Getaway. Musical theater training is imperative to anyone that is pursuing a theater career and it is just plain fun! These dancers are incredibly fortunate to be able to train with these accomplished professionals in the convenience of a local dance studio. Many of these teachers are busy performing yet they are special continued on next page

Mt. Olive Officials Urge Residents To Sign Up For Emergency Alerts
ublic safety officials in Mt. Olive are urging residents to take a few minutes to sign up for a free service that allows the township to send notifications to cell phones and emails. Residents who may need special assistance also can sign up for a service that makes those needs immediately known to first responders. “It’s summer storm season and that’s a good reason to make sure you’re getting the latest emergency information from the township, said Fred Detoro Jr., township fire official and head of the office of emergency management. “Our Everbridge system can notify you about anything from community events to school closings to power outages to the need to take cover or evacuate. It’s free and confidential and the quickest way to get information. Detoro said Everbridge has actually been successfully used in Mt. Olive for several years. Residents sign up on the township’s webpage, www.mountolivetownship.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page, in the column on the right, and look for “town notifications. Everbridge Aware is right there. When opened, it invites the reader to log in or open an account. The program asks registrants for their name, an account name and password and then brings them to pages to select how they want to be notified and what they want to be notified about. It also asks if they need any special assistance. “This system doesn’t replace 9-1-1, Detoro stressed. “If you need emergency assistance from police, fire or emergency medical services, you should still call 9-1-1 and
take whatever action is appropriate. But this is best, fastest way for us to let you know that something is going on. Detoro also urged those who need special assistance to register with NJ Register Ready. Completely voluntary and confidential, Register Ready helps first responders identify people who may need special assistance during an emergency. “There are people who can’t get out of a building easily because of a disability or people who count on devices that won’t work if there’s a power outage, said Detoro. “NJ Register Ready alerts us to those needs so we can render assistance before it becomes a crisis. The easiest way to find the registry is to Google NJ Register Ready. The actual website address is https://www13.state.nj.us/SpecialNeeds/Sig nin?ReturnUrl=%2fSpecialNeeds%2f. Like Everbridge, the survey asks the applicant registration and personal information that allows first responders to be alerted to the person’s special needs. “We recognize that some of the information we’re asking can be a little intrusive, but they are things we need to know so we can get the manpower and equipment we need to the scene in a timely manner, said Detoro. Detoro also mentioned that NJ Register Ready is a good tool for those with a temporary disability. “If you’re in bed with a broken leg, we’ll know that you need some help with mobility, he said. “When you’re back on your feet, you can delete your profile. Detoro emphasized that these services are confidential and that information is not
shared. He also said that those with questions or who need assistance registering can call his office at (973) 691-0900 x 7325. “Things can happen very quickly, whether because of weather or a man-made

Homeless Solutions Earns Four Star Rating
omeless Solutions’ strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating. “Homeless Solutions’ exceptional four-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public, according to Michael Thatcher, president & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated mjm-0121-3016 by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our four-star
O
rating. Homeless Solutions continues to be a part of a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its four-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Homeless Solutions. Homeless Solutions has had a four-star Charity Navigator rating for 12 of the past 14 years. “It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely in our work to provide shelter, services, and supportive housing to homeless and low income people,
said Homeless Solutions Chief Development Officer Stephanie Cicale. “Our four-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability. Homeless Solutions is a private, non-profit organization that has been helping the homeless and working poor in the Morris County area since 1983. Their staff and programs give people the tools they need to rebuild their lives, and as working people move to independence, Homeless Solutions provides sustainable homes people can afford. Fresh Cutz Barber Shop
wner John Lloyd started cutting hair when he was 14 years old, cutting my brother and friends hairs. As I got my first job in a shop in Dover in 2003 thru 2011, I learned alot from a great barber and I was mentored by the owner himself. In 2011 as I took a new job at DPW, I continued cutting hair after work. I had setup shop in my garage. I couldn't just put my scissors down, cutting hair was my passion indeed. Eventually in 2014, I went back to Dover full time and complete the Robert Fiance Academy in North Plainfield and graduated in 2015. My dream was to open a Barber Shop in my hometown of Roxbury. It came true on June 24th, 2015. It's been great and I celebrated my first year in business. I want to thank you, my family that helped to open up my shop, and a great team of barbers like Jack Hudspith, 2014 graduate from Cutting Edge Academy of Succasunna, and Willy Gonzales, a passionate barber, who has over 13 years of experience. He also started cutting his friends’ hair when he was 15 years old. Come in and experience a great haircut in a place with a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces
By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.
“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-
tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. Undefeated Day For MO Lax Team
he arrival of cooler weather marks a prime time to plant bulbs that will bloom come spring and summer. Bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground is cool, ideally when temperatures average between 40 and 50 F. Just be sure to plant bulbs at least six weeks before the ground freezes for optimal success. Always
follow the bulb distributor’s guidelines for planting, including suggestions regarding spacing and soil depth. Remove any weeds and loosen the soil to get started. In addition, think about mixing in compost or other organic matter to enrich the soil if it lacks nutrients.

By Cheryl Conway he historic Baptist Church in Flanders is one step closer in its renovation plans thanks to a $140,000 grant recently received by the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The grant application was written by Mt. Olive Township Business Administrator Laura Harris back in March with portions by Architect Margaret Hickey of Connelly and Hickey Historical Architects in Cranford. They were notified of approval of the full amount on June 23 to cover phase three of the church renovation project. When all work is complete, township officials hope to utilize the former church as a useable building for meetings, educational purposes, school tours, a museum and even small weddings, as well as the adjacent

Olive Historical Society and retired grant coordinator for Mt. Olive. “We are just very grateful for the money they’ve rewarded. We are so excited to be near completion! Can’t wait.” Harris explains, “It’s been an ongoing project. We’ve had multiple grants from the county and we are very grateful. This is the final phase.” The church dates back to 1853 and was utilized by a congregation that had been in existence since 1753. The cemetery adjacent to the church is the burial grounds for most of the town’s early founders including Budd, Stephens, Wolfe. Some names are

Student-Led Conferences Focus On Learning
ore than 450 students and their parents recently participated in Mt. Olive Middle School’s firstever student-led conferences. The end of the year event was an opportunity for parents to see how much their children have learned since September. The students created portfolios of work
done over the school year and reviewed the material with their parents during the conferences, which generally lasted about 20 minutes. The portfolios included items such as science labs, essays and math homework. While traditional parent-teacher conferences generally focus on performance and assessment, student-led conferences focus
on learning. Parents had a chance to see what their children had learned over the past 10 months of the school year and see actual progress. “Usually my mom sees my grades but doesn’t know what I actually learned,” said eighth-grader Alex Bartell. “We [the eighthgraders] also reflected on what we actually learned so it was good for us too.” Each grade level and subject area handled the compilation of the portfolios in a different way. In eighth-grade social studies, for example, students were asked to identify which concepts and topics learned over the year they felt were the most significant to the world today as well as to themselves. “We chose this approach so that students could individualize their portfolios and because it would allow them the opportunity to really reflect on how the past impacts the present,” said social studies teacher Matt Hansen. “It also got the students thinking about how events around the world impact us, both of which were primary focuses of our course this past year.” Reflection and self-analysis is one of the
key ideas of student-led conferences. The process, especially when done at the culmination of the school year, inspires students to think about the importance of what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown intellectually. Students see how one piece of learning provided the foundation for the one afterit, everything building to what they know now. And they are able to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and progress – and articulate them. The feedback forms that parents completed were overwhelming positive about the entire experience. “The teachers and team leaders did an amazing job and created these wonderful results,” said teacher Karen LaValley, who coordinated the conferences. “Each person was an important piece of the puzzle and helped the conferences be so successful.” All students completed portfolios. For the parents who were not able to attend the conferences, the portfolios were sent home so they could review the work with their kids.

Historic Church Receives Grant...
continued from page 26 Murphy. Earlier projects included work on the roof, exterior, steeple, then walls, she says. By being placed on the historic register, Murphy and officials have had to follow certain guidelines when it comes to restoring a historic building such as what products to use. A Historic Structures Report was completed to assess the structure and provide guidelines to follow, explains Murphy. Local Historian Thea Dunkel has also done a lot of research as it was decided that renovations should replicate the church back to the 1870 design period in order to avoid removing the outcove from the church. “It’s a whole detective story on how things were done, why they were done,” says Murphy. “You have a whole report that says you are going to restore it to this time period. It’s not just done dilly nilly. We did analysis of painting, colors. The only difference is the bathroom; the rest will look like 1870.” With the 2015 grant of $162,260 from the county, the township just went to bid on June 28. Work will begin late August, early September to clean up the carpentry, basement and flooring, explains Harris. With the 2016 grant of $140,120 just received, the church’s interior renovations can be completed to include the installation of a restroom which does not currently exist, as well as plumbing and electrical work. The township hopes to seek bids in October so work can begin with a completion goal of spring 2017, says Harris.
“We currently have several grants going on the church, all from the Morris County Preservation Trust,” says Murphy. “The stucco grant is still in progress, with the final coat of stucco going on shortly, which will be scored to look like limestone, as it had looked originally. A stair railing will be added to complete that grant. The second grant construction begins shortly, and will include interior basement work, heating and floor repairs. You may recall the heating system installed in the 1920’s or so cut a large air register in the center of the room, which weakened the floor supports. That will be fixed.” Next is the “electrical, plumbing and paint,” says Murphy. “We are really at the end. We have a very basic electrical install. It’s lighting and all the other stuff that needs to be done.” For the bathroom install, a closet which was used as a storage area will be turned into the bathroom, says Murphy. The final phase, which will also require a grant, will be the removal and possible restoration of a canvas ceiling that dates back to 1870 that has been covered up by metal ceiling tiles from 1890. Traveling artists would go around painting ceiling back at that time. “The canvas ceiling will be temporarily removed for assessment for future restoration,” says Murphy. “We know they are unusual; very few have survived.” Depending on the condition of this canvas ceiling, historians will have to decide whether to replace it with a replica or save a portion of it for display. “If we put up a new canvas ceiling, that

would be an attraction,” says Murphy. “After this phase is complete we will be able to open the building for the public,” says Murphy. Next to the church is the town’s first school, a one room school house. “We can let people in there now,” says Murphy, of the school house, but it’s not set up yet as a museum. It needs a new roof and electricity, “but we can open the door and let people peek inside.” Within three years, the goal is “we want to show that story on what it was like; a one room school house. The thought of what a school is today to be one room, sit down on a bench with a slate and a piece of chalk to see what it’s like to sit in a class with dif-
ferent abilities in one room.” Another historic building in town is the Steward House. While renovations are also ongoing, the township would like to use the facility for receptions one day such as for sports dinners, although capacity may be a concern. “There’s an application to stabilize it,” says Harris, to seal the building’s envelope to prevent deterioration. “There may be a lot of work to restore it” causing that project to be a “much more expensive restoration.” The township just bought a sawmill, adds Harris, with hopes to maybe use the “talented carpentry” in house in order to “save taxpayers’ money.”

or have children of elderly parents looking to sell a home, as he has a great deal of experience in dealing with senior citizens in need of living changes. Raised in Boonton, King, former president of the Mt. Olive Area Chamber of Commerce and a current board member, has called Northwest New Jersey home his entire life and chose to stay in the area to raise his three children. He and his family have lived in Rockaway Township for 29 years. “I am deeply thankful for all those I have met through the years in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties,” he said, crediting the professional ties and friendships he has made over the years as forming who he is as a person. In addition to his career,
King keeps active in the business and service community. He has actively participated in the Mt. Olive, Sussex and Morris county, and Tri-Town Chambers of Commerce, several Caregivers Coalitions, and United Way of Northern New Jersey, among other committees and groups. He is also an active member of his church. To reach King, call 973229-9369 or email realtorpeterking@gmail.com.

Branda’s Italian Grill Remains Fresh After 15 Years
By Cheryl Conway nown for its fresh ingredients, like its homemade dressing and delicious eggplant, Branda’s Italian Grill in Budd Lake will be serving dishes that are even fresher with ingredients straight from its very own garden. A new vegetable garden was just landscaped last month behind the fence at the restaurant to offer the freshest produce to its customers, such as basil, green beans, mint, thyme, “Whatever we can grow,” says Claude Branda of Nutley, owner of Branda’s Italian Grill. The fresh garden ingredients can be used in his delicious salads or favorite dishes. Branda has invited his employees to help grow the vegetables so they can all take part in providing the best to the customers, he says. In business for 15 years on May 23, Branda’s Italian Grill was scheduled to hold a celebration Sat., July 9, at 11 a.m., with the Mt. Olive Twp. Mayor and some township officials to recognize the restaurant’s anniversary. Open every day 11 a.m. and Sundays at noon, Branda’s Italian Grill features recipes from Southern Italy but has a menu so diverse that “you can eat here every day and never eat the same things twice,” says Branda. Many of his recipes stem from his mom’s cooking from
Barci, South Italy, but he also does some cream dishes which is more central or northern Italy, as well as scampi which is more northern Italy style. “We cook what’s good,” says Branda. “People like alfredo; they like Franchese. We like dishes that are appealing. We sell hot dogs; we do hamburgers,” he laughs. “Our menu is very diverse. “We make our own dressings, it makes a difference,” says Branda. “There’s no additives. We use good ingredients”. The raspberry vinaigrette dressing is amazing and the “honey mustard dipping sauce is ridiculously good. Antipasto Italiana is superb. Mozzarella we make our own; grilled chicken wraps, bruschetta. We make that ourselves. That’s why you should eat here. We buy fresh wings bake them, deep fry them. We don’t use frozen wings. Lots of stuff we prepare.” The eggplant, “ours is the best you’ve ever had. We make it homemade. Eggplant lasagna is my mom’s dish. She made it for my birthday. It’s just off the charts.” Branda also raves about his “great coffee” which is 100 percent Columbian and his homemade desserts. “We have a pastry chef. She makes it special every week. We make our own cannoli cream.” Branda’s trick, he says, is “we work on stuff. If we could

make it better, we make it better,” like the tomato sauce, or the cannoli cream “if it needs another drop, needs less sugar, continued on next page

continued from previous page more cinnamon. You work on it for a month straight. The food is on point.” Branda also offers catering as well as delivery. He delivers up to nine miles away. First three miles are free; every three miles after that is $2 per mile. In the food business all of his life, Branda says he enjoys the people the most and feeding others a great meal. “I really enjoy working for the customers, whether it’s a pizza or a dinner,” he says. Most of all, he likes “feeding people. It kills me if something was wrong or if it was over cooked, it’s devastating. When I hear good things, it makes me happy.” Branda was working in food sales for 30 years when he came across LaGrada Brick Oven, the former restaurant before it became Branda’s Italian Grill. Branda worked for a food distribution company and would supply
the food to LaGrada. When he found out that the owner of LaGrada was going to sell the place, Branda decided to buy the restaurant, officially becoming the new owner on April 15, 2001. After renovating, preparing and coming up with a new menu, Branda opened his Italian grill on May 23. Business was not always strong, admits Branda, especially at first. Turning a restaurant around was a challenge and Branda was close to ‘walking out’ and closing the doors. But then it was Valentine’s Day 2004, when things turned around for the new restaurant owner. “We were here for three years so we did a terrific Valentine’s Day,” he describes. “We were so good; place was decorated beautifully; candles along the walkway, menu was just right, service was excellent, food was excellent. Instead of putting the key in the door continued on next page

China, tomatoes from Italy, anchovies from Portugal. “I was a buyer; I had to taste everything, sample it.” When his dad died, Branda and his brothers continued the business for four years then went to work for DiCarlo Food Distributors in N.Y. “We built their routes in the country,” he says. “That’s how I learned food, a lot of years, a lot of good eating,” says Branda. “Once you are in food, you can’t leave it. You always come back; it’s addicting. You got to love it. You got to have a passion for it.” The same goes with cooking. “I used to cook dinner for my kids every Sunday,” says Branda, it is a “tradition in the Italian family; Sunday dinner and family. From that it grew. My daughter would ask if she could bring a friend. Three or four people ended up with eight or ten. I’ve always had a passion to feed people. It is the highlight of my day.” For hours, menu and more information, go to brandasitaliangrill.com.

Having a consistent staff, currently 15 employees, has also helped the business. “When you have changes, have had different cooks, even if you are using the same ingredients, it changes. Everyone’s pinch and splash is different.” With the same cooks there for three years now, “consistency is important.” Branda was raised in the food industry. CCM Employees Honored For Saving Lives With CPR
orty-one individuals and organizations in New Jersey were recently honored at the American Heart Association 2016 New Jersey American Heartsaver Awards for their life-saving efforts. Included among them were three County College of Morris (CCM) employees who assisted with saving the life of another staff member. David Ackerman, of Morris Plains, a security officer at CCM, came to the aid of Joan Cunningham, of North Caldwell, then dean of the Division of Health and Natural Sciences, when she suffered a heart attack during a meeting at the college, collapsing and becoming unconscious. First, Dr. Dwight Smith, of Randolph, vice president of Academic Affairs, responded by starting immediate CPR as soon as he saw Cunningham collapse. Soon after, Ackerman, along with Security Sergeant Charles Munk, of Hackettstown, rushed to the scene prepared with an AED in hand. Ackerman and Munk applied the AED which administered a shock. Soon after, the ambulance squad, paramedics and police arrived and Cunningham was transported to
the hospital. The American Heart Association’s American Heartsaver Awards is held annually to commend individuals, organizations and schools throughout the Garden State for taking extraordinary steps to strengthen the American Heart Association Chain of Survival or for rescue efforts that saved a life of someone experiencing a cardiac emergency. The awards ceremony was held earlier this month at the Robert Wood Johnson Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness in Mercerville. Nearly 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital every year, and only 10 percent survive. Given immediately, CPR doubles or triples survival rates and executing the Chain of Survival can save thousands of lives annually. The American Heartsaver Recognition Program is an initiative supporting the American Heart Association’s efforts to strengthen the Chain of Survival to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans while reducing death and disability from heart disease and stroke by 20 percent by the
year 2020. Anyone can learn CPR and everyone should.
