One School, One Book in Woodland Park

he Woodland Park Municipal Alliance Against Alcoholism and Drug Abuse sponsors a number of initiative in the three borough schools each year.

One such initiative is the “One School, One Book” program, which ran last month at Beatrice Gilmore School.

The Municipal Alliance purchased copies of “Friendship According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney for every student and staff member. At a school-wide assembly, details about the program were given to the students. Their school mascot Buddy The Bear then appeared, wearing an inflatable ball as a clue - a hamster wheel. He unwrapped the book revealing the title to the students.

In the book, Humphrey, a class pet hamster, gets a big surprise as a new class pet, Og the frog, is introduced. Og doesn’t respond to his friendly squeaks and the students are so interested in Og, they almost stop paying attention to Humphrey altogether. Friendship can be tricky, but Humphrey is an intrepid problem-solver. If any hamster can become buddies with a frog, he can.

Parents/guardians were asked to read the book at home with their child, a chapter a night. The book is theirs to keep.

The school community all read it together at the same pace. The goal is to bring the Beatrice Gilmore community together to talk

about the importance of reading and friendship.

Giving Tree in Woodland Park

his holiday season, a number of charitable efforts were held in the local schools. Both Beatrice Gilmore and Memorial Schools in Woodland Park took part in the annual Giving Tree initiative for the Family Reach Foundation.

This is the 15th year that teachers have organized this charitable event. The Family Reach Foundation is a national non-profit dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of cancer. It provides immediate financial assistance, education and navigation to families before they hit critical breaking points.

Over $2,000 in gift cards were given to the foundation at separate presentations at the schools to founder Marilyn Morrello, who was on hand with her husband Rick and family relations coordinator Ravit Gilletti. The families of students who contributed a gift card to the effort were recognized with a handmade ornament on a Christmas tree at the school.

Mrs. Morrello spoke to the students, thanking them and their families for their generosity.

During the event at BG, teachers read “A New Coat For Anna” to the students. The story details a mother’s dedication to acquire a coat for her daughter. The book carries a message that ordinary can become precious in times of turmoil.

PV Education Foundation Raises Money Towards Library Renovation, One Book At A Time

By Brianna Rodriguez n December 7, 2019, the Passaic Valley Education Foundation hosted its first book fair at the Woodland Park Barnes and Noble, with earnings contributing to the renovation of the library. From December 7-11, students and staff were able to support the cause both in-store and online by purchasing items using a specific bookfair ID code at checkout.

Throughout the day, students and staff entertained shoppers and called attention to the fundraiser through various events.

The Interact Club and Literary Club hosted storytime in the children’s section of the store. Students read picture books aloud to youngsters in the community in a morning and afternoon session. Mark

Huggins ‘19 and Mia Preziosi ‘19 performed holiday songs in the toy section. Preziosi sang as Huggins played keyboard and contributed additional vocals. The performance was well received by shoppers, many of whom thought the songs were coming from the store radio. Two students from Ms. Carrie Ingraham’s classes, Nick Minadeo

‘19 (Cartooning) and Dante Blucher ‘19 (Portfolio Honors), showed off and produced original artwork for onlookers in front of the storytelling podium in the children’s section. Finally, cheerleaders performed in the toy section to close out the event.

Ms. Yvonne Migliaccio, retired teacher, was inspired to organize the book fair due to her time as interim librarian earlier this year. “While serving as the librarian, I noticed many things that could be done to make the library more welcoming,” she explained. “I was in Barnes and Noble one day, talking with the staff about the library and its need for a face lift. That’s when one of the assistant managers mentioned the book fair.”

Ms. Migliaccio brought the idea to the Passaic Valley Education Foundation and plans began immediately. The Foundation received a portion of all items sold using the ID. Totals are still being calculated.

Where Cooking is a Family Tradition

By Lindsey Kelleher am Stabile cooked at home for years before he owned Lorenzo’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria on New Street.

Growing up, he learned recipes and many cooking techniques from his mother Rachel.

“My mother was an excellent cook. Learning from her and from myself working in restaurants, I decided to put the two together and go into business,” Stabile, 60, said.

He has kept that family tradition alive through Lorenzo’s, which he now owns with his son Nico, 28.

bought Lorenzo’s in 1983 from former owner Lorenzo LaSandra. In 1993, Lorenzo’s moved to 223 New St. where the restaurant is today. The former bar Sir Richard’s Inn used to be in that location.

Over the years, it has transformed from a pizzeria to a pizzeria and restaurant that serves a wide selection of traditional, homemade Italian dishes.

“It’s just a good feeling to have owned the same restaurant for 35 years,” Stabile said.

Stabile and his son Nico credit the fresh ingredients they use and their customers’ loyalty for the restaurant’s success and plan to continue expanding their customer base in the new decade by

attracting more date night customers and families.

Lorenzo’s has a regular menu and a catering menu filled with Italian dishes along with seasonal specials.

For Valentine’s Day, Lorenzo’s will have heartshaped lobster ravioli on the menu, and throughout the winter the signature butternut squash soup will be featured.

Some signature dishes on the menu include Momma Sunday, which is one of Stabile’s favorite meals to make because the recipe is inspired by his late mother.

Momma Sunday is a pasta dish with meatballs, sausage and brag olé.

“People feel like their own mother is making the dish,” he explained.

Other signature dishes include the seafood salad, which is made with shrimp, calamari, octopus, garlic, lemon, tomatoes, celery and onions; and the chicken and veal Milanese.

And don’t forget the pizza.

“The pizza followed us here,” said Stabile. “One of the reasons why is that we use spring water to make the dough.

The water gives it such a flavor.”

The margarita, four-cheese, and rustica, which comes with plum marinara sauce, eggplant, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and arugula, are among some of the popular specialty pies.

PVEF Continues Fundraising for New Media Center

By Devyn DiPasquale ince September 2018, the Passaic Valley Education Foundation has spearheaded an ongoing fundraiser to renovate the school library to upgrade the center’s technology and update its aesthetic.

The goal of the renovation is to update the library to a fully functioning media center. “The library needs an upgrade because it’s a place in the school that every parent goes through at some point during their students’ career,” said Mr. Michael DeLuccia, President of the PVEF. “It’s also going to give students a place where they can study. It will also be more technology updated so it will definitely help in that aspect.”

Students also recognize the benefits of the renovation. “A new library would definitely attract more students and would make them more interested in their studies,” said Jadalynn Rodriguez ’20.

The new media center would give students a more updated and inviting space for their studies. Planning for the new layout includes couches for more comfortable seating as well as long tables for students to work. The new library would have smaller spaces for students to study with greater privacy to use the library resources. Overall, the library renovations will better accommodate the needs of both students and staff.

Initiatives like last month’s Barnes & Noble Book Fair have sparked a renewed interest in the fundraiser and further plans are in the works. rownie Troop 96790 in Woodland Park recently held a food drive to assist Eva’s Village in Paterson. David Bein, Community Kitchen Chef Director at Eva’s Village, came to speak with the girls about what services Eva’s provides and to thank them for all the donations. Chef Dave directs a staff of six that produces over 500,000 meals a year for Eva’s guests, residents and staff.

Science Teacher Mrs. Leidig Becomes School Librarian

By Gabriella Gutierrez arlier this November, former Science teacher Mrs. Daria Leidig took over the role of School Librarian. She looks forward to working with both students and staff members to supplement curriculums and enhance learning experiences.

Mrs. Leidig was thrilled to begin in her new position, having completed her Master’s Degree in Education Technology. She was fascinated with how students and teachers could utilize devices to better each other’s understanding of the topics taught in class. “Seeing how you can incorporate technology into a variety of lessons sparked my interest,” Mrs. Leidig said.

A major goal for Mrs. Leidig is to raise money to support the process of renovating and improving the library. Her involvement in the fundraiser began in late November with the Barnes & Noble Book Fair, where a percentage of purchases made under

a particular code went towards the library’s funding.

Mrs. Leidig also plans to meet with all teachers to discuss resources available to enhance each curriculum. Students who take advantage of the services offered by the library credit it with playing a considerable role in their success.

Mrs. Leidig has been teaching for fourteen years in the Science Department. This transition to School Librarian is a significant change that will present new challenges. Her former students believe Mrs. Leidig is just what the library needs as she has demonstrated a willingness to put in an extra effort to benefit student learning throughout her career. “Mrs. Leidig always took the time to make sure we truly understood the lesson,” said Sophia Covello. “She would hold reviews for us in the morning which would help everyone.”

materials. They had 20 minutes to build their sleighs using only the materials provided. Afterwards, they tested their sleighs on a ramp to see how far they could go.

A

postcard exchange project in 4-Wilson/D’Astolfo’s class at Beatrice Gilmore School in Wood-land Park is in full swing.

Students researched facts and fun information about New Jersey from a variety of sources. Students then worked on letter writing skills and together composed a postcard to be sent out to

the other 49 states. The class is enjoying the postcards that are coming in from other states. Students are learning information from peers across the country, and comparing and contrasting geography and culture of each with their own.

Dad’s Love for the Old Morris Canal

y father had a great love for the history of the old Morris Canal. After all, his father, Watson Mabey, worked as an Engineer on Incline Plane Ten East in Lincoln Park.

And, his grandfather, William Mabey, once owned and operated an icehouse along the banks of the canal. The Morris Canal was a page of New Jersey history that was near and dear to his heart.

For over 20 years, my Dad served as the Vice President of the Lincoln Park Historical Society. And, in that time, Dad must have given well over a hundred educational talks on the old Morris Canal. Most of the talks that Dad gave, were at the Lincoln Park Museum. One of Dad’s favorite subjects, for his many talks, was explaining the intricate mechanics of how an incline plane operated.

I loved my Dad’s style of public speaking and how he explained things to a group of people. Dad had a kindness in his voice. His love for the old Morris Canal would shine like a diamond, as he told the stories of the old canal that he remembered his father telling him, when he was a boy.

When Dad gave talks at the Lincoln Park Museum, they would always have cake and coffee afterwards. From

Research from the National Fire Protection Association shows about half of all home fires start in the kitchen, so it’s important to have a fire extinguisher handy. Look for one specifically designed for kitchen applications, and keep the extinguisher behind you when cooking. In the event of a fire, there’s risk of burning yourself if you must reach over the fire to grab the extinguisher.

Know Holiday Lighting Rules About 75% of holiday tree fires happen in December or January, according to the National Fire Protection Association, making now the perfect time to start being vigilant. Some rules of thumb: use flame-resistant decorations, utilize lights properly indoors or outdoors and look for electrical decorations that are approved by a nationally recognized testing lab such as UL, Intertek or CSA. Also avoid plugging more than three light strings into each other; opt for a power strip instead.

Check Your Smoke Alarms Check your smoke alarms to ensure they are less than 10 years old. Winter and the holiday season are peak times for home fires, but according to industry experts, few realize smoke alarms need to be replaced at least every 10 years. In fact, common misconceptions about smoke alarm maintenance, such as hardwired alarms don’t need to be changed, can leave

you more vulnerable. Smoke alarms are just like every other appliance; they need replaced periodically. This includes units that are hardwired into your home, even if you have changed the batteries. If you’ve forgotten when the alarms were installed, check the date on the back of the smoke alarm. If you’re interested in a long-term fix, alarms are available with a built-in 10-year battery. When times comes to replace the unit, the alarm will signal.

Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms On average, one person dies each day from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the United States. CO is known as the silent killer because you can’t see, smell or taste this poisonous gas.

During winter months, CO incidents spike but symptoms can easily be mistaken for the flu. Natural gas furnaces, water heaters, ranges, gasoline-powered tools, cars, wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and more produce CO. Because CO doesn’t rise like smoke, it mixes with the air and can go through drywall.
