By Tina Pappas he Township celebrated its 150th Arbor Day on April 29. Under sunny skies, local Girl Scouts purchased a tree and planted it in Memorial Park on Wilmore Road. Arbor Day is dedicated annually to public tree-planting in the U.S. and other countries and is usually observed in late April or early May. Mayor James Damiano, Councilman Al Kahwaty, Councilman Chris Vancheri, and officers of the Little Falls Police Department, were on-hand to assist the Girl Scouts and Troop Leader Blanka Foucaud in the tree-planting.
“This year for the 150th Arbor Day, the Girl Scouts purchased a tree to plant here in Wilmore Park,” Damiano said. “They got some lessons about trees from Anne Vandermark Kahwaty, our resident arborist, and helped plant the tree.” Kahwaty said she enjoys taking part in Arbor Day lessons. “It was such a joy to teach the Girl Scouts about the tree, to answer their questions, and then to help them in the hands-on in planting of this tree that will grow and thrive for years to come,” she explained. troops, which included Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Cadets, took part in the planting of the Eastern RedBud sapling. “We chose it because it’s a native tree and had pretty flowers in the spring. It grows but doesn’t get too big,” explained. “If you look along the path through the park, it’s lined with Cherry trees. Our hope is that we can continue to add more trees to line the path.” Foucaud said anytime the Girl Scouts get
an opportunity to help, they always try to. She also said that the troops have done activities on Arbor Day for many years. It’s a great way to teach them and the girls learn a lot,” she added. Afterwards, Foucaud said the Daisies and Brownies did a whole activity learning about trees with their troop. “Thank you to everyone who participated in this day,” Damiano added.
