Something Could Be Hiding...
Ankle sprains are often cast off as a minor problem, when in fact they should be treated as a potential longterm problem. In the best scenario, a single ligament is injured when you twist an ankle. In the worst scenario, several ligaments are involved as well as the ankle joint.
An x-ray doesn’t tell the whole story. The best initial treatment is to control the swelling and stabilize the ankle with a special ankle brace.
If the pain doesn’t improve in one month, an MRI may be indicated.
An MRI can indicate if something is hiding inside the joint. A piece of cartilage or bone could have broken off.
The ultimate goals are to avoid long-term pain and the need for surgery. Even an ankle that’s been hurting for months can be treated back to normal. Settling for pain of any kind in the foot and ankle isn’t necessary. Let us know if you want us to address a chronic ankle problem.
