coach for Randolph High School for the fall 2017 season. No stranger to football or Randolph, Lyons brings decades of experience to the field. He has coached

Randolph’s freshman football team and has been teaching physical education and health at the middle school for the past 30 years. Randolph High School Athletic Director Jeff DiLollo said, “Mike is a long-time committed and influential member of our faculty known for his high character and dedication to Randolph.” Lyons is “very excited after 30 years of being an assistant” to take over as head coach. According to DiLollo, Tarig Holman left the head coach position at Randolph unexpectedly in July and has since accepted the job of head coach for Neptune High School. The decision to award Lyons the interim position was a “collective process between the athletic director, the high school principal and the superintendent. Whether that will become a permanent position after the season or in

the future is still undecided,” added DiLollo. The season kicks off at home on September 1. “It’s coming up fast,” said Lyons. Understandably excited, he noted they “have a real nice group of seniors coming back and a real good senior core that’s showing leadership and helping the other guys develop into varsity players.” Lyons feels “blessed” and spoke highly of his staff and returning main coaches Will Naham, Joe Scali, Paul Conboy, Antonio Rodriguez and Gary Baumwoll. He is pleased with the new coaches he added too. Benjamin Eaton and T.J. Hill, former Canadian Football League player, joined the staff along with brothers and former Randolph players Nick and James Gangemi who work with the freshman. During the summer, varsity and the freshman players share the field and work together, and Lyons added, “It’s a re-

ally good combination.” In high school, Lyons played football at Morris Catholic in the late ‘70s and then attended East Stroudsburg University. His coaching days began at Parsippany High School and continued to Parsippany Hills and Hackettstown High School before settling at Randolph. He started in Randolph back in the Bauer days and worked with Joe Lusardi. “They played a big role in my development.” The past two seasons, Lyons assisted Holman, who Lyons coached when Holman played for Ran-

dolph High School in the ‘90s. He learned quite a bit from all the coaches he worked with and explained that experience helped him build a well-balanced offense. Lyons is a die-hard Oakland Raiders fan. “That says a lot about me,” he joked. It also speaks to his perseverance and tenacity, and there’s no denying his passion, excitement and devotion to the game and to the team run deep. This fall, Randolph fans will be rooting for the Rams, but it would be hard not to root for Lyons too.

Rolling Thunder Provides Awareness And Helps Veterans In Need

S

By R.E. Wagner end them home! We will not forget!” This is just a handful of statements rising above the steady rumble of passing motorcycles during the demonstrations, community events and charity drives organized across the country by the non-profit organization known as Rolling Thunder. In 1987, former United States Marine Corps Corporal Ray Manzo, U.S. Army Sergeant Major John Holland, Marine First Sergeant Walt Sides, and Sergeant Ted Sampley had lunch together at a diner in Somerville. They were meeting to discuss an unsettling issue that they, as servicemen, felt wasn’t being acknowledged

enough in certain military circles. By the end of the meeting, they parted ways with a mission in mind: to bring full accountability for the ‘Prisoners Of War’ and ‘Missing In Action (MIA)’ of all U.S. wars. For Diane Malanga, the secretary of Rolling Thunder’s 3rd Chapter in New Jersey and an official member for almost a decade, Rolling Thunder’s goal hit close to a place close to her heart. “They were deeply troubled knowing these men and women were forgotten,” explained Malanga, “thinking of their families who have not had a chance to have closure. My father served in World War II and Korea and my son just left for boot camp.” Since World War II, more

than 83,000 MIA cases have remained unresolved within military files. An MIA is a casualty classification assigned to combatants and prisoners of war (POW) who are reported missing during wartime. They may have been killed, wounded or captured. If deceased, neither their remains nor grave site have been positively identified. For these four veterans, 83,000 unaccounted soldiers left overseas on distant battlefields was an outrage. “They said we have to take a stand and do something to raise awareness,” Malanga continued. On May 29, 1988, Corporal Manzo recruited 2,500 men and women from all over the nation to attend Rolling Thunder’s first public event held in Washington

D.C. There, they assembled peacefully in the parking lot of the Pentagon and rode through the Capital on a predetermined route that led them to the Lincoln Memorial. Since then, Rolling Thunder has grown into an established national orga-

nization. During their most recent rally in 2017, almost a million people attended to show their patriotism. And with approximately 10,000 active members spread out across the country among 94 chapters in 33 states, Rolling Thunder has no plans on slowing down.

The non-profit’s rosters are filled not only with veterans and active duty military personal, but their families, friends and those who seek to honor the soldiers who never made it home. In New Jersey alone, there are four Rolling Thuncontinued on page 3

The Garden State is also home to Rolling Thunder’s National Headquarters located in Lebanon. “I joined the chapter three in 2008,” Malanga said, before sharing her fond memory of her first event with Rolling Thunder at the Community Living Center in Lyons. “There were snacks and karaoke, the veterans just loved it. The music, the visit, was so awesome for them.” Malanga reminisced, “One of the most rewarding parts of being a member is making the difference for a veteran. I was hooked from that moment.” In addition to raising awareness of their mission

statement to bring home missing soldiers, Rolling Thunder Chapters across the nation provide financial support to help veterans in need. “At times our aging veterans struggle to pay bills,” Malanga explained. “We help with money to pay for heating and have also helped many Veterans with rent or mortgage payments. Last year, Chapter Three raised approx. $24,000 through various events, rides, personal donations and fundraising.” Through charitable donations, as well as organizing community events for service men and women, Rolling Thunder Chapters are known to host events at hospitals and nursing homes like picnics and piz-

za parties for Veterans. An annual program known as Christmas Families is held where New Jersey Rolling Thunder Chapter members provide gift cards from Shoprite, Walmart and Toy- R-Us to help Veterans during the holidays. Although primarily known for their roaring motorcades and biker persona, Rolling Thunder encourages anyone with a passion to pay respects to service men and women to volunteer their time or donating to the cause. Interested in donating or volunteering? Contact a local Rolling Thunder Chapter to learn more, or write to the National Headquarters located in Lebanon at P.O. Box 216 Neshanic Station, N.J., 08853.

Rare American Flags On Display In Morris County Library

A

merican flags from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are on display in the lobby of the Morris County Library through Sept. 15. The Morris County Heritage Commission and the Morris County Library are presenting a special display entitled “Saluting Old Glory: Our Nation’s Flag.’’ The display details the history of the Star-Spangled Banner, and is on view through Tues., Aug. 25. Items in the exhibit cases will be on view through Sept. 15. Flags and exhibit cases of related items are on view on the first and second floors. A third exhibit case, lo-

cated on the fifth floor of the County Administration Building in Morristown, also features examples of rare and unusual American flags. Visitors to the county library exhibit can view a selection of American flags and see the changes that took place from the Colonial Period to the Mid-20th Century. Also on view are vintage children’s books, period photographs and other materials related to the Stars and Stripes. While each flag in the exhibit has an interesting history, three have ties to Morris County. The first, on loan from the Historical Society of Boonton Township, is an

original 35-star Civil War flag. This rare American flag was handed down to Mrs. Oscar Kincaid, Sr., from her aunt, and remained in the Kincaid family for almost 150 years. The second is a small 39-star silk parade flag with hand-painted gold stars, on loan from the Morristown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A third flag, from the special collections in the Morris County Archives, was handcrafted in silk in 1940, and is on display in the library lobby. For more information, visit the Morris County Heritage Commission at https://mchc.morriscountynj.gov/.

utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive. Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part. 1. Don’t be a bystander. It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up. But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life. 2. Stop sibling bullying at home. You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there. 3. Enlist the help of adults. If you see a need for increased adult supervision at highrisk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult. 4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bullying banner and use social media to advertise the

fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence. 5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop. 6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying. Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully. Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

The Party Goes On At Lead East

I

By Elsie Walker t’s rare that someone can say they’ve hosted a party that’s been going on for 35 years. However, Terry Cook of Appleton Productions in Long Valley can say just that. A former automotive journalist and hot rodder, who began manufacturing his own car designs in the late 1990s, Cook’s event started as a car show; but it has transformed into a celebration of the 1950’s. It’s called Lead East and it is known as the world’s biggest ‘50s party. For a few days each year, people can leave the woes of the current days behind them and visit a more carefree time. From classic cars- not only from the ‘50s- to the sounds, sights, and dance of the 50’s, Lead East has it all. Also, this

year, joining in on the time travel fun is Barry Weiss of TV’s “Storage Wars.” Lead East is held at the Parsippany Hilton. This year’s event will opened to spectators Thursday – Sunday, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. About 1,400 classic car, 1974 and earlier, from around the country are expected at this year’s event. However, on Sunday, “will be one big parking lot full of corvettes,” noted Cook. Usually only cars up to the 1970’s would be allowed that day, but this year corvettes of any year, 19532017, will be welcomed. For car enthusiasts, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits will be on hand. He’ll cackle his Swamp Rat 12. Cook explained that means Garlits will rev up the engine and, since there’s no muffler,

car enthusiasts will get the smell and sound they enjoy. Cook will be quick to point out that Lead East is about more than cars and that is what has made it endure. “[It’s the] atmosphere of the 1950’s; the atmosphere is everywhere,” he said. That atmosphere includes music, movies and dances of the era. Some highlights include a pool party with two rockabilly bands plus music on the outdoor and indoor stages on Friday night of the event. On the weekend, there are four stages with live music. On Saturday, that includes Afternoon A Capella with eight great Doo Wap groups. On Sunday, there will be tribute bands to Dion and Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons.

“They are really good,” noted Cook. The opportunities to dance abound including a sock hop and dance party. As it has for 34 of its years, Lead East will include a drive-in theater set-up. Among this year’s offerings are “The Thing from Another World,” a 1951 monster flick with James Arness of “Gunsmoke fame” as the monster, “Them,” a 1954 science fiction bug classic, and a more recent movie (1971), the Steven Spielberg classic, “Duel” with Dennis Weaver. Giving is also part of Lead East. There will be a 50-50 for Make-A-Wish and, as they have for years, the local Toys for Tots will be on hand to collect toys to give needy children at Christmas.

Given the event’s theme, some people may wonder what special guest Barry Weiss has to do with the ‘50s, how he came to be part of this year’s party. “I’ve known Barry for years,” said Cook. Weiss bought the most famous car that Cook ever built: the Scrape 1930 Lincoln Zephyr. “People recognize Barry all the time. He’ll be float-

ing around Lead East Friday and Saturday and sitting down inside for autographs on Sunday from noon – 3 p.m., where people can stand on line to meet him,” said Cook. For Lead East admission cost, daily schedule, and other information, visit its website at leadeast.net or the Lead East Facebook page.

New Vice Principal Looks Forward To School Year

he Randolph Board of Education hired Michael Scott, a Hoboken vice principal as the new vice principal for Fernbrook and Shongum elementary schools. Scott will replace Kristin Mueller, who will leave the district on June 30 to become an elementary principal in Millburn. Superintendent Jennifer A. Fano introduced Scott to the Board of Education and the public at the Board of Education meeting on June 20. “I am really excited to have you join our team in Randolph and more specifically Fernbrook and Shongum schools,” Fano said. “I am confident Mr. Scott will be a great new

addition to our leadership team.” Scott is a vice principal at the T.G. Connors School in Hoboken since 2016 and has worked in Hoboken as a kindergarten, second grade and fourth grade teacher, and coordinated an after school robotics program. He was expected to begin his position in Randolph after July 1. Scott has a bachelor’s in sociology from Boston College, a master’s in elementary teaching from the College of New Jersey and a master’s in urban education from New Jersey City University. “I am very excited to be joining Randolph Township Schools,” Scott said. “The collaborative approach of

all staff is something that really sets Randolph apart and I look forward to working with so many great educators. From the first time I visited Fernbrook, and on each subsequent visit to locations within the district, I felt a positive energy and excitement about education that is contagious and makes me eager to dive right in. I have already met so many welcoming staff members, but it would be difficult to find anyone more positive and excited than Dr. Telischak, principal of Fernbrook, and Dr. Burns, principal of Shongum. I cannot wait to work with both of these excellent school leaders and to find ways to incorporate my skills, knowledge and ex-

NAHS Members Paint Mural For Library

Serving Northern and Central Jersey For Over 20 Years!

FREE ESTIMATES

Pictured, from left, are Randolph Director of Secondary Education Jonathan Olsen, Randolph High School Art Honor Society advisor Steve Coleman, Art Honor Society members Kaitlyn Kudriavetz, Emily Higgins, April Stockfish, Francesca Riggio, Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Frank Perrone and media specialist Steve Cullis.

T

he Randolph High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society recently painted a new mural for the high school library. The mural was dedicated during the last week of school. It will be on display in the library, where the Randolph Board of Education meets, so that board members and the public can enjoy it. The students based the mural on a retro poster from the 1950s, according to Steve Cullis, the high school media specialist. “I just love it,” Cullis said of the colorful mural made with acrylic paint. “It is a legacy for the students to leave something for the

library and to showcase their talent. It is absolutely amazing.” Steve Coleman, the Randolph High School Art Honor Society advisor and art teacher, said he hopes society members will create another mural for the library next year. “This is part of our local initiative,” he said. “We need to find things which will have a lasting impact.” Students and staff walk through the hallways, but tend to spend time in the library, studying, and can enjoy looking at the mural, Coleman said. “I think the mural is absolutely wonderful and will decorate the walls of the library for a lifetime,”

said Randolph Fine and Performing Arts Supervisor Frank Perrone. He added that the mural took society members many hours to create. Art Honor Society member Kaitlyn Kudriavetz, who will be a senior in the fall, said she was excited to create a painting for the high school. “It is nice knowing that when I will be in college, that a part of me will be here for the rest of the school.” Aspril Stockfish agreed. “It’s so cool to know that all of your hard work will be here in the library for people to see,” said Stockfish, who will be a senior in the fall. “People will see it every day.”

Make-Ahead Breakfasts for Busy School Days

hen the school year rolls around, switching from pool to school means finding simpler ways to kick off the day with healthy and nutritious options. Preparing feel-good breakfasts can be as easy as picking and putting together the right ingredients, if you know where to buy them. At grocery stores like ALDI, parents can conveniently find choices they can feel good about feeding their families, including fresh produce and organic, non-

GMO and gluten-free options. Parents can also shop easier knowing ALDI private label items – which make up 90 percent of its products – are free from certified synthetic colors, added trans fats and MSG. After the shopping trip, try these make-ahead breakfast ideas to give the busy mornings a boost: • Homemade energy bars are an easy breakfast option that can keep you fueled until lunch. For simple bars, heat coconut oil and vanilla in a saucepan until combined then transfer to a large bowl and

mix with cashew butter, oats, dried fruits and granola. Press the mixture between two cookie sheets to flatten, refrigerate 2 hours and slice into bars. • Portion out produce for daily breakfast smoothies. Seal each weekday’s smoothie ingredients in separate plastic bags and simply toss the ingredients in a blender each morning. Enjoy your smoothie in a tumbler or try something new, such as this Blackberry Avocado Smoothie Bowl. • Use your slow cooker to make oatmeal. Before

heading to bed, simply add milk, vanilla and your favorite sweetener to rolled oats and cook on low 7-8 hours. Include dried fruit to soak up moisture and provide a sweet, juicy addition. Or try these Morning Oasis Overnight Oats for a no-cook variation on traditional oatmeal for a quick, crunchy start to the day. Make school mornings a breeze with more quick recipes at aldi.us. Area Mental Health Agencies Plan Merger To Continue Services To Local Community

By Cheryl Conway un separately for almost 65 years, two non-profit agencies plan to merge as one to prepare for the future and continue to provide quality programs. The Mental Health Association of Essex County in Montclair and the Mental Health Association of Morris County in Mountain Lakes plan to unite as one non-profit agency serving both counties effective Aug. 1. The new organization will operate as the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Inc., serving currently about 1,800 clients. With shifts in funding and cuts in Medicaid in the

forecast, agency officials decided that merging the two agencies would be the best option without having to provide less to its clients that utilize services regarding mental health. “No two organizations could be closely aligned in regards to our vision, our values, our mission,” says MHAEC Executive Director Robert N. Davison for the past 18 years. Davison will continue as president and CEO of the new association. “This merger is something that makes absolute sense for all parties involved in that it takes two strong, viable, community-based agencies and unites them into a single

entity with even greater capacity to serve individuals and families in our communities whose lives are affected by mental illness,” says Davison. “By joining forces and combining resources, this new, cross-county association will represent a ‘whole’ that is truly greater than the sum of its parts; as they say, measured twice and cut once.” Discussions about joining forces began about six months ago by Louis A. Schwarcz, outgoing president and CEO of the MHAMC. The idea was brought to the boards on Feb. 27, confirms Davison. Schwarcz identified ‘the best interests of all con-

cerned’ as his reason for initiating the transition into a single agency, as stated in a press release. “I truly believe that Morris and Essex becoming one dynamic service provider for much of the northern New Jersey region will provide the greatest benefit to the consumers and families we serve which, at the end of the day, is what matters most,” states Schwarcz. “The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris will represent strength, stability, and greater collective capacity for our staff, our volunteers and our supporters to advance our shared mission well into the foreseeable future.”

Both boards agreed on the merger in April and signed an agreement on April 27, says Davison. Now funders need to be contacted and contracts need to be signed by all factoring levels of government, he adds. “What matters most to both of our associations is that the needs of our community’s most vulnerable populations are met in a compassionate, dignified manner,” says Davison. “That commitment will continue and thrive as we move forward and help the diverse constituents we serve make progress along their journey to wellness and recovery, which is the cornerstone of both of our

origins and our new partnership.” Combining as one agency is the best option “in order to maintain services through consumers and their families,” says Davison. Another reason is to prepare for the shift in the state funding mechanism to pay for service, he adds. The agencies are projected to receive less money for administrative support. Three administrative positions will be cut as the agencies streamline for the merger, says Davison. A third reason for the merger is to be ready for the proposed cuts in Medicaid suggested by the fedcontinued on page 24

Agencies Plan Merger... continued from page 23 eral government’s Medical Health Care Act. If the policy is approved by the House of Representatives, the proposal is to cut Medicaid by $880 billion in the nation and $31 billion in New Jersey over the next 10 years, explains Davison. NJ’s public mental health programs are funded through Medicaid, with the majority of their funding from the NJ Department of Human Services . “We feel a duty to do it now [merge] to maintain critical services to our families and clients,” says Da-

vison. As a result of the merger, administration will be streamlined but services will stay the same, says Davison. Both agencies provide similar programs and core services are the same. The MHAEC has been providing services to individuals suffering from severe and persistent mental illness as well as a whole range of other behavioral health challenges since it was established in 1950. It currently provides service to about 1,000 clients. The MHAMC, which was founded in 1953, has

been providing similar programs and services to about 800 consumers. Once merged, the two offices will remain open and continue to function in both counties, at separate locations. The plan is to continue “looking to maintain what we are currently doing,” says Davison. It is “hoping to expand services in each county,” in the future. P

eople who periodically experience difficulty sleeping may benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, sleeping outside can be beneficial to the sleep-wake cycle. That’s because spending

Did You Know? time under the stars increases melatonin levels in the body. Melatonin is a hormone that controls wakefulness. Higher levels help the body relax and induce sleep. The researchers found that individuals who spent a weekend in the woods camping out at night

fell asleep earlier and rose an hour and a half earlier in the morning. For those who don’t like to camp, increasing exposure to daylight and then avoiding sources of artificial light (i.e., televisions and cellphones) at night can help create a similar effect.

Morris Co. Residents Urged To Keep Bags Out Of Recycling

he Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority is urging county residents to keep all types of plastic bags out of the recycling content they put at the curb for recycling collection, stressing that plastic bags are a major hindrance to recycling operations. Plastic bags are one of the worst contaminants in the recycling process, on a list of unwanted materials that also includes scrap metal, wires, hazardous waste, chemicals, diapers, syringes, needles, propane tanks and hangers. None of these items should be included with curbside recyclables since they can hurt employees and disable machinery.

However, plastic bag contamination is especially troublesome because it causes the Morris County MUA’s recycling system to shut down several times a day. The plastic bags wrap around rotating axles, wheels and disks of the MUA’s mechanical sorting and processing system, bringing the system to a halt. “When the machines are silent, production stops and the receiving lines back up, resulting in a reduction in recycling processing efficiency, safety and the value of recyclables, while labor costs go up,’’ said MUA Recycling Specialist Chris Vidal. “At times, plastic bags slip through the sorting

process and wind up in the paper bales,’’ said Vidal. “Since plastic, obviously, is not paper, it is a major contaminant of paper bales and can lead to the paper being unmarketable and, therefore, not recycled.’’ So, what to do with plastic bags? They can be recycled at select supermarkets and stores. The bags, including supermarket-type plastic bags and bread, newspaper, dry cleaning and other plastic bags, must be empty, clean, and free of moisture or food when recycled at these locations. For more information about single-stream recycling, visit the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority’s website at www.MCMUA.com.

By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in operating a seven-facility shelter.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers

Plans to open the store at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer

administrative director of SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got real-

ly nice stuff,” and now it is gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organization has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North

America out of her three bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment. To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 nonpaid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court,

doctor appointments, social services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. Relying on monetary support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to continued on page 29

continued from page 28 get the shelter’s mortgage reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.” “We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs.

Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back. “We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties. Other immediate items include large black con-

tractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave., West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information. Agency Seeks Help Getting Homeless On Road To Success

F

amily Promise of Morris County, a social service provider of housing, job training, employment assistance and health assistance to the area’s homeless, has launched its “Keys to Housing Program” Campaign. The agency was awarded new permanent housing vouchers from the Department of Community Affairs, which cover the cost of rent for 15 prospective tenants, but not the initial one-time costs of $3,000 or more for additional expenses. The tenants may need

realtor fees, moving costs, storage and clean up costs, inspection fees, among other costs that are not covered. This unique Morris County program helps families and individuals build a sustainable community by addressing job training, employment, financial literacy, physical and mental health, child care and legal issues to obtain safe, affordable, permanent housing. “We are prioritizing the immediate need of stable housing, as it is a critical milestone in achieving the ultimate goal of self-suf-

ficiency,’’ said Executive Director Joann Bjornson, LSW. “We help locate, obtain, and retain permanent housing for our families and individuals and act as a liaison between clients and landlords to make safe, affordable housing a win-win situation for tenants and landlords.” The goal of the campaign is to raise $60,000 to house up to 15 families, many of whom are ready to be housed and whose vouchers expire Sept. 30. Visit www.familypromisemorris.org for more information.
