he described as “pleasure-mad, corrupt, squalid, decadent rapacious, licentious, strife-ridden, and depraved.” And that was a good place to be in 1939, because he had just left Nazi Germany as Hitler began ramping up the extermination of all Jews in Europe. Engler of Berkeley Heights was born in 1934, in Berlin, Germany. His father was a chemist and his mother was a milliner. According to Engler, in the early years of the Nazis, his father, an Austrian citizen, felt relatively protected from losing his job. That was until Hitler marched into Austria, and then things became ugly. “My father had a degree in chemistry and worked in a sugar factory in Berlin,” said Engler. “He soon lost his job and started a small ice cream store.” But everything changed on Oct. 9/10, 1938, a night that would go down in history as Kristallnacht, commonly known as the night of the broken glass. The name comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after a coordinated anti-Jewish demonstration in Berlin by paramilitary forces and German civilians. The windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and syn-
agogues were smashed and looted. The number of dead when deaths from post-arrest maltreatment and suicides was in the hundreds. Engler’s father knew at once that he did not have the protected status he thought he had. They had to get out of Germany as soon as possible. So, they went into hiding on a farm that belonged to a non-Jewish friend of theirs. “Since Hitler had taken our passports we couldn’t travel out of Germany,” said Engler. “My mother went to a travel agent that didn’t require a passport, and somehow was able to buy tickets to Shanghai. “My father urged the rest of the family in Austria to leave with him, but they all felt they had a protected status.” None of Engler’s family survived. “At the time, Shanghai was separately administered from the rest of China, and was essentially an open port, run by the French, British, Americans and the Japanese, so no one really had any control, and consequently it attracted all sorts of riff raft, refugees and criminals,” said Engler. “It was the city where greed drove the forces, and calamity was at the door.” The journey took about eight days. “When we arrived in
Shanghai, we were greeted on the docks by Chinese Coolies who took everybody’s luggage to what was called a refugee center where we were placed in a large Jewish community. There were a lot of European women in Shanghai and my mother found employment as a milliner, again. My father found work in the dental community making gold teeth, which at the time was a symbol of wealth among the Japanese and Chinese.” Engler went to a British school, and in his own words, “became a colonial brat,” with a full-time nanny and a private rickshaw for school transportation. All of that changed when the Japanese occupied the city. “They moved between 18,000 and 20,000 Jews and other Europeans to a ghetto approximately onesquare mile in size that already held 100,000 Chinese,” said Engler. Barbed wire and guard towers did not surround the ghetto. “The borders were strictly defined by street names. With special permission, one could leave the ghetto as my mother did often because of her clients. “By July 1945, the Americans were bombing parts of the city where the Japanese had a military
presence. On July 17, an American bomber accidently dropped a load of bombs on the ghetto. Forty-three Europeans and hundreds of Chinese were killed. “On August 6, we heard that the United States had dropped an atomic bomb. The Japanese had left the city and we were free,” said Engler. “It was a day I could not describe even if I had three hours.” The American bombers soon began dropping thousands of cases of C-rations. “We thought we had gone to heaven, but our joy was short-lived,” said Engler. “On the horizon, we saw bombers coming toward us at a very low altitude. There was a gas trailing each airplane. We thought we were about to be gassed, but it turned out to be bombers spraying DDT to delouse all of us.” By 1949, after spending continued on page 4

ave you been considering improving your smile, but don’t have the time or money to deal with it at the moment? Dr. Goldberg has been providing the community with a service known as Snap-On-Smile for years. They are removable plastic teeth customized to your mouth, and when in place, you can’t tell they aren’t your own! The Snap-On-Smile is made of a resin (plastic) that is thin, flexible, and comfortable. It fits over your own teeth, like a mouthguard or whitening tray. It can correct stains, chips, gaps, and missing teeth. Without a doubt, it can be life-changing. Goldberg has made these appliances for people for so many reasons: their wedding, job interviews, evaluate veneers or cosmetics
Instant Veneers – How To Get An Immediate Smile Makeover before actually performing the work, and modeling shoots. One question people ask regularly is if the Snap On Smile with affect speech, since it fits over your own teeth. It can, but not always. Some people require a short adjustment period to get used to having something new in their mouth. Within two weeks, most people adjust without a problem. Another common question revolves around staining. The Snap On Smile is quite stain resistant, but over time, it can darken from certain foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, and soda. The appliance comes with a cleaning kit, which does a great job for maintenance. So who isn’t a candidate for Snap On Smile? The biggest disqualifications
are periodontal (gum) disease and decay. If you have gum disease or multiple cavities, these issues need to be addressed first. Cost is also a question Goldberg and his staff hear often. There are two versions of the appliance: a “full arch” and a “partial arch.” The full arch spans all of the teeth in an arch (upper jaw or lower jaw), and is the most commonly requested appliance. It cost about the same as one crown. To see an actual patient of Goldberg, visit his website at MorrisCountyDentist.com, and click on the “Services & Procedures” tab. From here, you can click on the “Cosmetics” tab, and you will find the Snap On Smile. This person came to Goldberg asking to improve both her smile and bite. However,
she was going on vacation and wanted to do something temporarily. In two appointments, we were able to provide her with what you see here. To learn more about the appliance, visit Goldberg’s office. If you’d like to see if you’re a candidate for the appliance, call the office and set up a consultation.

Millbrook Church Welcomes New Pastor
By Elsie Walker n July 1, a new face was seen behind the pulpit of the Millbrook United Methodist Church in Randolph: Pastor Nick Petrov. One might say the ministry is in his blood; he is a third generation Methodist minister. He was born in Rousse, Bulgaria, on the Danube River. His father and grandfather, who were ministers during the communist rule, encouraged him to always study more and he credits them with the drive for learning that brought him and his family to the United States 10 years ago, where he earned a master’s degree and this past June, his doctorate from Drew University. When asked if they
should call him “Dr. Petrov,” he will tell people to call him “Dr. Nick” or just “Nick.” Recently, the pastor shared a little of his background and personal life, including what drew him to the U.S. Petrov noted that where he grew up in Bulgaria, it is quite diverse. He quoted a passage by Nobel laureate Elias Canetti that he says captures it well: “People of the most varied backgrounds lived there; on any one day you could hear seven or eight languages. Aside from Bulgarians, there were Turks who lived in their own neighborhood; next to it was the neighborhood of the Sephardim, the Spanish Jews; and there were Greeks, Albanians, Armenians, and Gypsies.” Petrov speaks five lan-
guages: Bulgarian, English, German, Russian, and Macedonian. According to history books, communism started in Bulgaria after WWII and fell in the late 1980s. When asked about the church and communism, Petrov reflected on how communism affected the Christians in Bulgaria. Both his father and grandfather were ministers in an underground church. “There was a feeling of discontentment and fear” is how Petrov described the climate for Christians. “For example, Christmas was banned by the communists, so Christians had to mark it in secret,” Petrov noted. Bibles had to be smuggled into the country. Bibles were smuggled in from the U.S.
and Petrov remembers as a child having a Bible that was printed here. Later, Petrov would go on to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps of ministry, serving churches in Austria and Bulgaria. In 2000, he graduated Martin Luther College in Austria with Diploma in Theology. While at the seminary in Austria, one of his professors was a missionary from the U.S. They stayed in touch after that professor had gone back to the U.S. States to teach at Emory University in Georgia. He encouraged Petrov to come there. Petrov noted that his father and grandfather always encouraged him to study and that is how he continued on page 4

Methodist Church. While studying for that doctorate, he started serving as pastor of the Port Morris United Methodist Church in Landing. He will continue to serve there while also serving the church in Randolph. Petrov says his background is a plus he brings to ministry: “ I have experience in a variety of churches, ministering to different cultures.” On a personal note, Petrov has been married to
his wife, Stela for 15 years. They have two children – David, 14, and Evangeline, 6. The pastor’s hobbies and interests include music, reading, photography, hiking, and fishing. “I am very excited about my appointment at Millbrook UMC,” says Petrov. “I’m new to the Randolph community and look forward to meeting people in the area. Everyone is invited to Sunday worship which starts at 9:45 a.m.”

Randolph Parish Looks Back At Its Growth, Celebrates 40 Years
By Henry M. Holden n Sept 17, Resurrection Parish in Randolph will begin a year-long celebration of its 40th anniversary of ministry. Invited guests will include Bishop Emeritus Frank Rodimer, and Msgr. Martin F. Rauscher, the founding and building pastor. This also marks the 35th anniversary of the construction of the church building, and the 10th anniversary of the Ministry Center addition. The origins of Resurrection Parish go back to a meeting held on July 28, 1977, requested by a small group of parishioners with Bishop, then Monsignor, Frank Rodimer. The group wanted to discuss the possibility of erecting a Catholic Church in Randolph Township. At the time, Randolph’s 1,200 Catholic families had to travel outside of Randolph to attend Mass and other church-related functions. On July 1, 1978, the bishop’s office published the establishment of the “Parish of the Resurrection,” with Father Martin Rauscher appointed pastor. He would retire from the parish in 2000. He said, “I arrived in Randolph with no people, no church, no land and no money.” But, that would soon change. On the weekend of July 8-9, according to “The Beacon” newspaper “nearly 1,500 residents joined Father Martin to celebrate their first Mass at the Randolph Intermediate School.” For the next five years, weekend Masses were celebrated in the In-
termediate School Auditorium. From these humble beginnings developed a spirit of community that grew by leaps and bounds. People came to know one another through spiritual and social activities, including, the first parish picnic and the religious education programs. Without a permanent home, the people focused on each other and the knowledge that God was bringing to life church within His people. One could almost characterize the influx of people to the parish as a “God Rush.” By the end of the year there were 607 families registered averaging registrations of more than 100 families a month. But a lot of work and challenges loomed ahead if there was to be a physical church and the ministries associated with it. Until land was purchased and an actual church building was erected the congregation improvised. Daily Mass was alternately celebrated between the Parish Rectory, on Park Avenue and parishioners’ homes. In August, Reverend Konstantine Tsigas, Pastor of St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church, offered his church for weddings and funerals. By early September, the parish had a Music Ministry, a Banner Ministry, and a Hospitality Ministry, and Rodimer visited to celebrate Mass in the first parish he created as a bishop. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), held classes in the homes of volunteers throughout
the township. And there were also fun things going on. There were dances, and balls at the local firehouse, roller and ice skating parties, and what would become an annual picnic in Brundage Park, which drew more than half of the parishioners. The picnics would continue for more than 22 years. Carol Bamesberger put out a call for volunteers for the Samaritans, a group that would reach out and assist those in emergency situations in the parish. In January 1980, the parish newsletter reported that the Samaritan group donated $300 to the township for the Christmas season. The township replied in part: “The splendid support by your Parish, along with other concerned citizens, made it possible to provide baskets to 100 families this year. This was a result of people caring about others.” The new year, 1979, brought challenges. The Parish approved a committee to make recommendations on a land purchase and price. This committee had ten steps to complete with a final decision resting with “a substantial majority of the voting parishioners.” Some of those steps included locating available land, agreeing on a price, finance terms and getting the parish and township’s approval. By the Christmas season many of the activities that people today take for granted were falling into place. Babies were being baptized, there was a children’s Advent presentation and a children’s and adult choir concert.
The ministry center is seen on the left side of the church. Photo by Delia Vince-Cruz.
All the sacraments had been celebrated albeit some in other churches in the Morristown area. On Dec. 28, 1979, the Parish closed on ten acres of gently sloping farm land along the west side of Millbrook Avenue. They put
down 20 percent of the purchase price, and planned to pay it down in quarterly installments, at nine percent interest, or pay it off early without a penalty. Under the terms of the payment plan it would take five years to pay off. Martin said, “I
feel we can pay off the land by December 1980. Right now, we are about halfway home. It will be a beautiful Christmas present that we can give ourselves this coming year.” Many more activities continued on page 7

Parish Celebrates 40 Years... continued from page 6 were added to the parish calendar. Bowling, wheelbarrow races, volleyball, a peanut hunt, skating parties an egg tossing contest and a wine and cheese tasting was held at the local VFW hall. A babysitting service for Mass was also started. On March 8, 1980, 165 parishioners held their first St. Patrick’s Day party at the VFW hall. The cooking crew prepared 150 pounds of corn beef and 30 pounds of hot dogs. Heads of cabbage coleslaw and sauerkraut rounded off the menu. On April 18 and 19, the parish held its first annual art festival featuring the works of local artists, and a musical production. The works were displayed at the County College of Morris Student Govern-
ment Center for sale. More than 170 people bid on various art works resulting in 75 sales and more than a $1,200 profit. To round out the festival, the musical production featured: “A Cabaret Night of Comedy and Music.” Tickets were six dollars each including complementary Chablis served during intermission. All proceeds went to the Building Fund. The festival yielded almost $4,000 to the building fund. With selection of an architectural firm in February 1981, the rooms necessary for the church had been defined. Fundraising began in June. Teams of fundraisers visited each parish household, and solicited pledges totaling $800,000. Parishioners were encouraged to take a three-year pledge as
well as a flexible payment schedule. According to Martin, response during the first two weeks of the drive was very good. During that time, more than 150 families pledged more than $425,000. By October, 240 parishioners took on the big challenge to bring Resurrection Parish’s dream and the church closer to reality with pledges exceeding one million dollars. On Nov. 7, 1981, under chilling windy, gray skies, and early snow flurries, several dozen brave souls played lumberjack to clear the land. A few probably wished they had stayed in bed with the morning paper, but they knew it had to be done. By the end of the continued on page 10

Parish Celebrates 40 Years... continued from page 7 day the land was clear and Resurrection Parish was one step closer to its new church. After months of permit delays, groundbreaking ceremonies took place on Sept. 11, 1982, marking the completion of the planning phase of the parish building program. The groundbreaking gave tangible evidence that the church building was close at hand. Parishioners gathered on that sparkling autumn day to celebrate the blessing of the ground where their church would soon stand. Highlighting the event was the burning of the mortgage for the land. The dedication of the church on Oct. 8, 1983, was a high point in the celebration of the people’s com-
mitment and an affirmation of their call to be builders of God’s kingdom on earth. With a parishioner base of about 1,400 families, by 1987, the church was bulging at the seams with church activities. A Jan. 10, 1988, notice in the parish Bulletin said, “Bishop Rodimer is giving consideration to starting a new parish in Ironia. The bishop will meet with large group of parishioners interested in a new Parish.” On Sept. 18, 1988, Saint Matthew the Apostle Parish, in Ironia, was established to make it possible for people in the new parish to experience a smaller community, and at the same time, reduce the size of Resurrection Parish back to what it was during the first five years of the Parish at the intermediate school
In the years that followed, the growth was subtle, but by 2004, the church population and its activities had grown beyond the original design. The Finance Committee recognized the need to create a master plan to prepare Resurrection Parish for the future. After 24 years of constant use it was time to “make it new again.” An elevator was needed, classrooms for religious education were needed and the church needed refurbishment. A capital campaign to gather funding and architectural plans for the improvements was created in 2006. Any improvements needed to include a look into the future, which may include fewer clergy and, and as a result, more crowded Masses. The need drove

decisions to maximize the seating space in the church. Some of the issues that continued to plague the church needed to be fixed, a leaky roof and leaking cupola windows, before they invested in refurbishing the church, as well as handicap access to the sanctuary. The church was temporarily closed, and liturgical celebrations were held in the Community Room on the ground floor level. St. Matthew’s, the sister parish was used for weddings and funerals. Mid-year saw the first nod to the electronic age when Parish Pay, an online way of supporting the church was introduced, and the parish stepped into the electronic age when its website, www.resurrection-
parishnj.org went online. By Oct. 2007, all the major renovations to the sanctuary were completed. By Jan. 2008, the capital campaign was in full forward motion. Five hundred nine pledges were made jumping to $2.6 million with $1.1 million paid. Resurrection Parish celebrated the dedication of its new Ministry Center on Oct. 12, 2008, which was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the church dedication. The new construction and the refurbishment of the worship space was made possible through the support of parishioners who pledged $2.7 million. The Ministry Center included 10 classrooms wired for the internet. Now
the 28 ministries, including religious education, had the room they needed, with an elevator for easier access to senior members. “The renovation of the church and the new ministry center give testimony to the incredible sense of stewardship by many of our parishioners,” said Father John Andrew Connell, the former pastor. “The story of Resurrection Parish is the story of its people, men and women of faith who willingly and generously gave of themselves. Like the many stones that form their church, each one of them is important and unique. They are the living stones of the Lord Jesus.”

The Debate: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids vs. In-Office Hearing Evaluations & Fittings
ecent debates surrounding the Over-theCounter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 (OTC) have made headlines in the hearing healthcare industry. The OTC Act makes certain types of “personal sound amplification products” (PSAP) available to adults with mild or moderate hearing impairment without the need for a professional evaluation. Hearing healthcare professionals have conflicting views on whether having this type of accessibility would be more harmful than beneficial to someone suffering from hearing loss. The cost of PSAPs range in cost from $250$350 which is considerately cheaper than purchasing hearing aids, which can cost in the thousands. With hearing aids becoming more discrete and technologically advanced, their capabilities and benefits are also becoming more attractive to consumers; but the cost associated with purchasing a pair can make them less accessible to some. Naturally, having the option to purchase a personal sound amplification product over-the-counter would be more appealing to someone who needs the help but is on a tight budget. However, the question arises: does this immediate affordability come at a larger longterm cost? Audiologists and hearing healthcare providers at Hearing Health USA (HHUSA) explain that offering a “one size fits all” solution can do more harm than good for those suffering from hearing loss. Each patient requires various levels of care, and by purchasing over-the-counter hearing amplifiers, patients miss out on the customized solutions that they would receive from getting a full hearing evaluation followed by a proper fitting. Hearing aids are significantly more advanced than PSAPs, and need to be
programmed by a hearing care professional with the exact hearing loss needs of an individual. They can even be adjusted periodically to fit the progression of a patient’s hearing loss over time. For someone with moderate hearing loss, using a PSAP will not give them the customized help they really need. Hearing aids purchased from a network such as HHUSA also come with in-office support and maintenance that long surpasses the initial purchase, which is something PSAPs do not offer. If a hearing aid is properly cared for and maintained it can last anywhere from 4-7 years, and the professionals at Hearing Health USA offer care and maintenance for the lifetime of your device. The fear of hearing healthcare providers is that skipping the professional hearing services will lead to poorer outcomes, and will eventually decrease the overall use of hearing aids or assistive devices. Hearing loss is commonly seen as an unwelcomed signed of aging, which is why four out of five adults already ignore the signs and symptoms. Professionals feel that it is impossible for someone to self-diagnose the correct level of hearing loss. Considering that
studies have found untreated hearing loss to be tied to the decline of cognitive functions, memory loss, and even Alzheimer’s Disease, the hearing healthcare professionals at Hearing Health USA are worried about the damage this approach might cause. Hearing Health USA is a network of over 100 reputable clinics in the United States. Their hearing healthcare professional’s expertise and compassionate approach has allowed them to positively influence the life and hearing health of over 180,000 patients since their first location’s grand opening in 2014. Their local office, American Hearing Centers in Randolph, NJ, is located at 447 Route 10, Suite 1 and is now accepting new patients! Call 973-370-4005 today to make an appointment for a free hearing screening. The hearing health care professionals at Hearing Health USA encourage you to splurge a little when it comes to your hearing; it’s one thing you don’t want to take the budgeted approach with. Remember that an investment in your hearing is an investment in your quality of life!
