The next day, the patient will likely have either full amnesia of the procedure, or just a little recollection.

Are You Prepared For Cold And Flu Season?

I

t’s that time of year again... the Cold/Flu season is approaching (womp womp)! As the weather gets colder and the wind gets stronger our bodies become more susceptible to colds and the flu. In the United States, the Flu season starts in November and lingers until March... that’s 5 whole months!

Which means that we are battling these nasty “bugs” for almost half of the year! So, if you’re not prepared it can be a grueling 5 months! Instead, learn what you can do to stay Cold and Flu free this year.

Here are the Facts...

• The Center for Disease Control reports that Influenza, aka the Flu, affects 5%-20% of the United States population and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to complications associated with the Flu. On average 26,000 people die from the Flu each year.

• Severe Flu complications can occur at any age, but mostly affect the immune compromised. So, the elderly, infants and those with chronic health issues have to be extra careful this time of year.

• The Flu is contagious for 1-4 days before any symptoms appear and up to 5 days after the symptoms first appear.

• Approximately 50% of infected people do not show any symptoms, but are still contagious.

• While the common cold and the Flu are

both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. Generally, the Flu tends to be more severe than a common cold. Here are the major differences…

Prevention, Prevention, Prevention!

The best way to deal with any illness/ disease is to prevent yourself from getting it in the first place. Acupuncture can help to prevent colds and the flu by stimulating the body’s immune system. Inserting a few needles into various acupuncture points on the body jump starts your immune system by increasing and strengthening circulation of energy and blood (including your white blood cells- your body’s defensive line).

Here are some ways to help prevent colds/ flu this season:

• Keep your neck covered.

Fall In Love With The Randolph News’ New Magazine-Style

Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out.

The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine.

“The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.”

New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 municipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses.

The Flanders couple began their newspaper company MJ (My Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly. That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a

new view on media,” says Nicastro.

Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News.

“I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle. This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers get what they want to keep the papers longer which will help advertisers.”

While photos have always been included, the publications attract readers with a larger colorful photo on the front cover.

“It allows us to feature a large local photo on the front cover and as well as offer our advertisers some other advertising options,” says Nicastro, adding that he is pleased with all the positive feedback he has received so far.

Morris Libraries Expand Its Digital Library Program

By Jason Cohen n order to keep up with the ever evolving technological times, libraries have had to adapt. Now, residents and teachers in Morris County can access books on their personal devices, without leaving home.

Now that the school year has started, MAIN (The Morris Automated Information Network) consortium libraries are making things more appealing for youngsters and even adults who are tech savvy. MAIN consortium library card holders now have the opportunity to use the TumbleBooks Library to access digital children’s story books, read along eBooks, videos, games and more.

In order to help grant access to services like Tumblebooks.

MAIN Executive Director Phillip Berg feels this will not only help library membership, but enhance education.

“The MAIN member libraries felt it important to help support the efforts of teachers and school libraries by not just offering a limited courtesy library card to teachers, but a full access one,” Berg said.“ Educating our young people is an important endeavor which (public libraries) can and should help as members of the greater local community.”

Additionally, K‐12 teachers can register for a full service library card in the town in which they teach if they do not already reside in the MAIN public libraries service area.

TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, available by subscription to Elementary Schools and Public Libraries around the world.

Library users may access TumbleBooks by visiting a participating library’s website or installing the app on their smartphone. Users will be asked for their library card number to verify their access. Visit your library’s website for a link or go to: http://bit.ly/maintumblebooks.

Emily Weisenstein, head of youth services at Madison Public Library, who co‐chairs the MAIN Youth Services Committee, feels this new app is a step in the right direction.

“It is a fantastic resource for our patrons,” Weisenstein said.

“They offer a wide range of juvenile eBooks that children can access at anytime, anywhere – all they need is an Internet connection and a library card. I especially like their selection of interactive picture books, which allows children to read along with some of their favorite titles.

It’s fun, easy to use, and popular.”

Randolph High School Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

S

ix Randolph High School seniors have scored higher on the PSAT/NMSQT test than many of their peers across the country and have been named semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The students are: Christopher Archer, Kelyn Chen, Daniel Kim, Brooke Olsen, Samantha Tassillo and Alex Wang.

“I feel proud of all of my peers and to be a part of this group,” Archer said.

Every September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists, said RHS Principal Debbie Iosso. Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis and are

the highest scoring entrants in each state.

“Randolph High School consistently has students earning this distinction and, once again, we are extremely proud of our semifinalists,” Iosso said. “They have demonstrated their commitment to their academics by being among the students having the highest scores in New Jersey. Congratulations to these scholars as they have represented themselves, their school and their families with much pride.”

The program, now in its 63rd year, offers the academically talented high school seniors the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be of-

ourth graders in Tricia Bourke’s class at Ironia are making wishes on a Scottish Clootie tree, including wishes to become better writers or gain a better understanding of math.

“I want to do better with quick multiplication and be more focused and organized,” Jayden Fuehring wrote in his wish.

Jayden and every student in the class wrote wishes on a piece of paper and then tied a ribbon to the Clootie tree to symbolize their wishes. Superintendent Jennifer A. Daniel Sharkey, who wished to take his time when he is writing, said he loved making the wish on the Clootie tree.

“It kind of feels like it represents our class and I hope that my wish comes true that I can become a better writer,” said Sharkey.

“Everyone has hopes and dreams and everyone is unique,” added Chase Lorent, who said he really likes the Clootie tree.

“Each year, as part of a responsive classroom, the kids set goals that we refer to as hopes and dreams,” Bourke said.

“Teachers are always trying to find unique ways to display a representation of their hopes and dreams in the classroom. Since I took an amazing trip to Europe this summer and learned about

the Clootie tree in Scotland, I thought it would make a great addition to our classroom.

The Clootie tree is basically a Wishing tree, she said. It dates back to early Celtic times and most people used real trees outside. People would tie pieces of fabric to the tree as a way to symbolize their wish.

“The children in my class used a ribbon to symbolize their first “wish” or dream for this year,’’ the teacher said. “We are welcoming others to come and add their ribbons to our tree because we support all hopes and dreams.”

The Clootie tree was also used as a way to introduce the concept of maker space and how to create things to help teach people about concepts, Bourke noted.

1 large yellow onion, sliced 1 large red onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, sliced 3 medium-sized potatoes, cubed 1 orange (1/4 cup juice and zest) 1/4 teaspoon thyme, dried 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley orange rind curls brown rice, cooked according to package directions quinoa, cooked according to package directions Heat oven to 400 F. Line large sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place chicken legs on pan.

Spread fennel, yellow onion, red onion, garlic and potatoes around and in between legs.

In small bowl, whisk together orange juice and zest, thyme and olive oil. Pour mixture over chicken and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper.

Roast 45 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender. Cook rice and quinoa.

Servings: 4-6 2 yellow onions, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1/2 head of red or purple cabbage, cut into wedges 2 red potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1 small butternut squash, peeled and 1/2-inch diced 1 pound Brussels sprouts, halved extra-virgin olive oil salt, to taste black pepper, to taste 1 1/2 cups quinoa, cooked according to package directions Tahini sauce: 1 tablespoon tahini 1/2 lemon, juiced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2-1 teaspoon maple syrup 2 avocados, peeled and sliced fresh parsley

Heat oven to 400 F. Line large sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place onion, cabbage, potatoes, squash and Brussels sprouts in single layer on pan.

Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast vegetables 40 minutes, or until tender. Add more salt and pepper if needed.

To make tahini sauce: In small bowl, whisk tahini, lemon juice, mustard and syrup until smooth.

To assemble Buddha bowls: Spoon quinoa into bowls. Add roasted veggies and garnish with avocado and parsley. Drizzle tahini sauce over each bowl and serve.

Skylands Photo Contest Announced

hutterbugs, take heed: The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission invites contestants to submit their best scenic photos of New Jersey’s beautiful Skylands region for a photo contest.

The contest is open to students, amateurs and professionals. Submitted photos must have been taken after Oct.1, 2016, and the subject matter should be of the Skylands region: Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, or Warren County. More than $2,200 in prize money will be awarded in the professionally judged show.

Images may be digital or traditional, color or black and white.

The minimum size for all submissions is 8 inches by 10 inches. All submitted photographs must be wired and ready to hang. Contes-

tants may enter only one photograph.

Student prizes are $150 first place; $100 second place; $80 third place; and $70 honorable mention. Amateur, professional and Best of Show Award for $400 will also be given.

The show will open at the Administration Building on Tuesday, Nov. 28, and will run through Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018.

The photo contest is presented by the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission, supported by the Warren County Freeholders, and funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
