Plaque Dedicated at Historic Lake Hopatcong Train Station
M
orris County Commissioners, county preservation officials, state and local leaders and the New Jersey Preservation Trust joined the Lake Hopatcong Foundation at a plaque dedication ceremony at the historic Lake Hopatcong Train Station. The group gathered to recognize the many efforts and grants provided over the years to preserve the historic site. “This station was constructed in 1911. It is 110 years ago, and if you had been here and met a veteran back then, there was a good chance he had served in the Civil War,” said Commissioner Director Stephen H. Shaw. “World War I was three years in the future, that’s how old this building is. And the year this building opened, the New York Public Library also opened. Henry Ford hadn’t started his assembly line yet. That helps me keep in perspective how old this building is.” Shaw and Commissioner John Krickus presented a bronze plaque to be affixed to the building, noting a total of $1,129,143 in funding has been provided through the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund for preservation work on the station. The first Morris County grant was issued in 2015 grant to assist in its acquisition. The Preserve New Jersey Historic Trust also provided a $150,000 grant in 2016 and a recent grant of $254,879, which the trust fund’s Executive Director Dorothy Guzzo
and Principal Historic Preservation Specialist Glenn Ceponis ceremonially delivered with a giant check during today’s ceremony. “With your support, we have been able to breathe new life into this historic building and have created a space for the community to connect around New Jersey’s largest lake,” said Kyle Richter, Executive Director of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, which occupies the station. “Your continued support has allowed us to enter into the final phase of rehabilitation of the Lake Hopatcong Station, allowing for restoration of the exterior of the building.” State Assemblywomen BettyLou DeCroce and Aura Dunn joined the ceremony, along with Roxbury Mayor Robert DeFillippo, Sussex County Administrator Gregory Poff II, Assistant Morris County Administrator Deena Leary and Lake Hopatcong Foundation Chairman Marty Kane. Also in attendance were Joseph Barilla, Director of the Morris County Office of Planning & Preservation, Ray Chang, Morris County’s Historic Preservation Program and members and staff with the Preserve New Jersey Historic Trust. Constructed in 1911, the Lake Hopatcong Station was unique in several ways. It connected rail passengers to the many summer resorts, hotels, camping and cottages around the lake every summer. Visitors would step off the train to jump aboard one of the Lake Hopatcong Steamboat Compa-

ny boats, access the lake via the Morris Canal nearby, or they would board the Morris County Traction Company trolley in front of the station to reach Bertram Island. The station was part of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and the Lackawanna Cutoff project. It was constructed in what is known as a “Tudor Revival/ Jacobethan” style building, similar
to a sister station in Mountain Lakes, using stone rubble materials with detailing of concrete and glazed terra cotta. Inside are a ticket office, main hall and luggage room. A significant part of Morris County’s funding included replacement of its unique roof of green glazed clay tiles from Lodowici Roof Tiles, the same Ohio-based company continued on page 6

Veneers!
H
ave you been thinking about a straighter & whiter smile? Veneers may be the solution to that question! Veneers are thin shells of porcelain which are bonded to your own teeth. They can eliminate gaps, straighten crooked teeth, and permanently brighten your smile. They are a great way to “freshenup” aging teeth and rejuvenate them. The transformations we see in people’s lives from the results provided by veneers is one reason why we love providing this service for our patients. Reasons abound why patients undergo the treatment: increase self-confidence, improve social relationships, or increase employment opportunities. The process is generally rather simple: After a proper examination and diagnostic evaluation, your teeth will be prepared and impressions taken. At the second appointment, the veneers will be bonded to your teeth. That’s it! However, a nightguard should be considered in order to protect your new investment, and
follow-up appointments are essential. Regarding impressions, here at Morris County Dental, we now utilize digital scanning. We don’t need to use the goopy impression materials you may be accustomed to. Be careful to select a dentist who has had extensive training for veneers. It is easy to miss critical factors that can affect the long-term success of your investment. Dr. Goldberg has performed this service for many patients over his 27 years as a dentist, and is extremely experienced with cosmetic dentistry. Patients who would not be candidates for veneers include people who currently have crowns or multiple fillings, periodontal (gum) disease, and poor oral hygiene. If you would like a personal, generalized assessment to see if you’d be a candidate for veneers, give us a call and schedule a no-obligation, free consultation with either Dr. Goldberg or Dr. Davidson. We’d be more than happy to listen to your goals and discuss additional details with you!
Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Davidson are general dentists located in the Roxbury Mall in Succasunna. They provide general dental services for the entire family, including: cleanings, check-ups, whitening, veneers, crowns, root canals, periodontal
(gum) services, and dental implants. Please visit their website at www. morriscountydentist.com for additional information. They can be reached at (973) 328-1225 and at frontdesk.mcda@gmail. com.

Coast Guard Helicopter Flies into Aeroflex Airport for Local Youth Group
P
ilots from the United States Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City flew into Aeroflex Airport Tuesday June 29th to exhibit aerospace career opportunities to Civil Air Patrol cadets. This visit was performed as part of the Civil Air Patrol’s mission to give children hands-on learning opportunities in aerospace education. Visitors had the opportunity to ask the helicopter crew questions about how they found careers working in the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard crew demonstrated the capabilities of the Airbus MH-65 rescue helicopter in air by lowering and raising the helicopter’s rescue basket while hovering and performing a high-speed low pass over the airport. On the ground, the helicopter had its doors open while the crew showed off the helicopter’s cockpit and rescue equipment. Members of the crew described rescue missions they have performed in the aircraft off the coast of New Jersey. Two of the crew members were former Civil Air Patrol cadets themselves, giving those who visited an appreciation for how their activities in the organization can turn into a full time job. Two squadrons–Picatinny Composite Squadron and Lone Eagle Composite Squadron–joined the Andover Fire Department and Police Department at the display that lasted from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The crew welcoming these visitors included LCDR Mike Wightman, LTJG Bryan McAlister, AMT3 Estan Rodney, and USCGA 2/C Taylor Young. The Picatinny Composite Squadron recently relocated to Aeroflex Airport and is currently accepting new members, both adults and youths aged 12 to 18. If you are interest-

Temple Beth Am is an Affordable Choice Two years ago Temple Beth Am embarked on a new model for our congregation. We wanted one which would help to better meet the needs of our congregants and those unaffiliated Jews in the area. We realized that temple dues and religious school costs can be obstacle for many. We decided to adjust our dues and to provide free temple membership to those families with children in religious school. This significantly reduced the cost to some families by over 70%. In addition, as a result of COVID, we had reduced our temple dues by an additional 50%. We decided to continue the 50% dues reduction for one additional year through June 30, 2022. Dues and Religious School fees for the upcoming year July 2021 through June 2022 Dues $325 per person (50% reduction) Children under the age of 24 are free. Religious School Fees • First child grades 3- 7 $1,250 (Includes free temple dues) • Second child grades 3-7 $1,000 (Includes free temple dues) • Pre K through grades 2 $180 • Torah Tots – once per month – no charge, registration required • Confirmation class - $625 ($475 if there is another child in religious school) For more information, please call our office at 973-887-0046 Check out our blog TBA2-0.org for more information about Temple Beth Am. Lake Hopatcong Station in the early years, when passengers hopped off the train to board steam boats or trolleys to Lake resorts and hotels.
Lake Hopatcong Station today, with most preservation work completed.
Historic Lake Hopatcong Train Station... continued from front page that supplied the building’s original tiles in 1911. The station is one of 117 historic sites that Morris County has helped to preserve since 2003, after the people of
the county voted overwhelmingly to dedicate tax dollars annually to protect our rich history. As of last week, when the board approved $2.65 million to protect, restore and
preserve 27 sites, Morris County has invested more than $43.3 million to protect, preserve and refurbish buildings, structures and symbols of our past.

Randolph Teen Provides Shopping Support During Pandemic
I
By Steve Sears t all started simply for 18-year-old Randolph resident, Maurice Korish, and his good friend Adam Hollander. They did food deliveries together. “We just were simultaneously building a website and doing all these deliveries and we quickly realized,” says Korish, ‘Okay, we actually have an organization here that we’ll further develop and expand and, you know, accrue more volunteers, and help give back to the community.’ Then came Deliver Together, an incorporated nonprofit business in New Jersey. “We are recognized by New Jersey as Deliver Together Inc.” says Korish. Deliver Together, currently also applying for 501 c 3 status, has 90 volunteers and has done over 1,200 grocery and meal deliveries in three states. “We started back in March 2020; really like right when the pandemic began. We have had volunteers register that do deliveries. Predominantly we obviously operate in New Jersey - that’s where we’re based and incorporated – and we have volunteers in Florida and Maryland.” Korish is eyeing expansion into New York and Connecticut. Also, the Stanford-bound Korish is the recipient of the 2021 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award, a program of the Helen Diller Family Foundation. He will receive $36,000 to support his endeavor and further his education. He values the award for a few reasons. “The award itself includes me in a network of very incredible individuals from around the country that have also started their own nonprofits. It’s a very broad and very intellectual group of people who have had plenty of their own experience in different forms
of volunteerism.” He will use the scholarship monies to further his education, and also will devote some funds to Deliver Together. “To kind of further bolster the organization,” he says, “and then also potentially to my former high school and then my elementary school, just kind of as like a meaningful gift, recognizing the impact that they’ve had on my character.” The Deliver Together mission is most important. “We put a big emphasis on developing a strong relationship between elderly individuals in the local community and also the high schoolers and the teenagers in the community to kind of bridge that gap,” explains Korish. “It’s really just kind of putting a smile on somebody’s face who’s homebound, elderly, has been immunocompromised, just kind of to communicate with them, speak to them a bit, learn about their history in the community. That’s like a beautiful part of our mission that has been so inspiring.” There is no one type of Deliver Together volunteer youngster. For Korish and his organization, diversity reigns. “We’ve had public school kids, private school kids, religious kids, all different kinds of kids, and then we also serve all different types of clients from all different backgrounds.” A key thing now, as Korish and Hollander move on to college, is keeping high schoolers involved. “Because we’re an incorporated nonprofit business,” says Korish, “we also have a board of trustees and we also have our kind of executive team leadership, but a big mission, or a big part of our organization, is to kind of maintain a high school-led team lead leadership. We’re excited that we’re working to con-

tinue and further expand and that we really have to have kind of a new group of strong senior leaders ready to take on the leadership roles of the organization.” For more information about the Deliver Together mission, visit www.delivertogether.org.

Randolph High School Senior Wins National Award
R
By Henry M. Holden andolph High School graduate, Chase Bolnick, won an award in the National Academy of Television Art & Science Mid Atlantic Chapter, 2021 competition. Bolnick’s award was in the category for Best Short Form. The contestants were judged by media professionals and college educators from within the chapter. The award recognizes outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, and news by high school students in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. There were 120 entries and 67 nominees. Bolnick was one of the nominees. “The selection process was involved, with some paperwork, and they asked a lot of general information questions,” said Bolnick. “But it was mainly the film that I was submitting that was going to be judged.” Bolnick started acting at an early age. “My first acting job was when I was seven. I starred in a local production of Oliver.” One of his fondest and most vivid memories was when he was part of the commercial 1-800 Kars for Kids. “I was the piano kid,” he said with a big smile. Bolnick developed his love for filmmaking in high school. He found his calling learning from various sets, and he became passion-
ate about the business. “I realized then that I wanted to be a filmmaker and go on the other side of the camera.” “I’ve been in numerous movies, commercials, and TV shows, and I found my passion for filmmaking. I have made many films that I am proud of,” Bolnick said. According to IMDB, Bolnick has 40 credits to his name in acting, writing, directing, and editing. Some of his award-winning films are, The Jingle, Static Panic, and She is My Music which he wrote, directed, and edited. Bolnick’s explanation of his winning film: “She is My Music is about the reality that things are not always solvable, nor do they get better, but escapes such as music can provide a short period of time where you feel they do.” The quarantine changed Bolnick’s casting requirements. “I wrote and directed She is My Music during quarantine, so I had to scale back and make it a small cast. I had two of my friends in high school and my friend’s dad star in it.” When Bolnick got to high school, he found himself always on sets. Randolph offered a four-year course film program. “There were six kids interested, and we signed up for it. Just two stuck it out with me for the four
years. It’s not a big program but they do offer it and while I was enrolled in it, I realize that I had found my calling.” Throughout the four years Bolnick was always making films and his friends wanted to act in those films. “I was lucky to have friends who were willing to do that.” Bolnick enjoys the whole process. “I think it is extremely rewarding watching the final product. I like to do as much as I can on the films. I like to edit them, direct them, and be in them if I can.” Editing a production may take days, Bolnick says. “It is very tedious, but the finished product is gratifying to see.” Bolnick never took off during the summers. “Even through the summers I continued to make films and it became clear to me that filmmaking was what I wanted to do, even after school. I never questioned what I wanted to do with my life because I already knew.” Bolnick made a video of his graduating class so that they could reflect on it after they graduated. It was a 30-minute video and he showed it to the whole class. “It was extremely rewarding to be there at the premiere with all my classmates watching my work. I felt really good about that.” The 18-year-old will be attending The

I got into some but didn’t get into others. Out of the ones I got into, Austin, Texas, was on the top of my list. It is a beautiful place. I had to decide between going to Austin or another smaller college, not in a city as large as Austin. I realized that as a filmmaker I needed to have those life experiences to be able to make films. Austin is the place I want to go for these new life experiences.”

Roxbury Author Offers Intimate Look at Grant and His Tomb
A
By Jillian Risberg s Union general he led the United States to victory over the Confederacy during the American Civil War and served two terms as the 18th president. This enduring American hero, commemorated with the largest mausoleum in the free land — takes center stage in awardwinning author Louis Picone’s third book, Grant’s Tomb: The Epic Death of Ulysses S. Grant and the Making of an American Pantheon. “It started off for me as a fascination with the tomb and from there I discovered the (compelling) story in his final battle to write his memoirs,” Picone says. “I had always admired Grant and felt he didn’t get a fair shake in history and for years was regarded as one of the worst presidents. Thought there was a great story there that hadn’t been told before.” According to the author, for years that Southern lost cause narrative really defined Grant and in presidential pollings until the mid-90s he was considered fourth from the worst (below Warren G. Harding, Andrew Johnson and James Buchanan). “You couldn’t have a righteous Southern cause and still have Grant as a hero,” he says. “Grant’s reputation during the Civil War: butcher, lucky and a drunk. As president he was stupid and corrupt.” For the book, Picone interviewed Frank Scaturro, who has a life-long fascination with Grant. “In all my research of presidential places, I’ve rarely seen where a private individual has done so much, without any ulterior motive to save a presidential site as important as Grant’s Tomb,” says the author of Scaturro, at the time
a student at Columbia, which is blocks from the general’s resting place where the young man volunteered and ultimately wrote the mayor, governor and president a 325page report about all the horrors that occurred there. From the mid-60s until it was restored in the mid-90s by the National Park Service, Grant’s Tomb was a seriously dangerous — and constantly vandalized, crime-ridden location. There were congressional efforts to move the tomb, the family wanted to but it was amazing what that patriotic citizen pulled off. It took 12 years to build, and once the tomb was completed in 1897 it was the number one tourist attraction in New York City. More people went there than the Statue of Liberty. It’s now a distant public memory except for the Groucho Marx joke, ‘Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb?’ “Anyone who has been to Grant’s Tomb you know it’s uptown on the outskirts of Harlem, in the Morningside Heights area,” Picone says. “The fact that so many people made the journey and went there (makes it) even more impressive.” As president, Grant was an effective civil rights executive who created the Justice Department. “There were definitely scandals in Grant’s presidency; he trusted too much in people who didn’t warrant that trust, who had betrayed that trust,” says Picone. “What he did during Reconstruction was a noble effort. The KKK started to form and use violence and intimidation to suppress the free slaves who were trying to exercise their civil and voting continued on page 11

Roxbury Author... continued from page 10 rights.” Grant sent the military down south, thousands were arrested and the KKK was decimated. “It didn’t rise again until the early 1900s,” the author says Grant’s reputation is being re-evaluated as a Civil War hero (150th anniversary since the Union’s victory) — but also as a president. Picone says Reconstruction is a huge part of Grant’s legacy. “He ran on a platform advocating
for native American rights; was a great statesman and probably the first president to use international courts to solve a Civil War issue with England over the sinking of a ship, the Alabama that was potentially going to fester into another war with England,” says the author. It was seen as a revolutionary move that predated the United Nations by 70 years. Grant had this interesting trajectory of his reputation and Picone parallels it to the tomb because when Grant died and towards the last years of his life, even 20 years later,

he became perhaps the most popular man in America, even the world. “Beloved by both the North and south; in the generation after the Civil War when the country was still greatly divided,” the author says. “Grant, as a person and Grant’s Tomb became an important site for reconciliation and reunification.” With the country so divided over systemic racism during the past year Grant as a unifying figure couldn’t be more timely. “It probably became the only site in America where you’d have Confederates, unions go to pay their respects, white Americans, African Americans, Democrats and Republicans, men and women,” says the author. “He could appeal to all factions of the country. There was nobody else like Grant and no other site like Grant’s Tomb in that regard.” He was put on a pedestal alongside Washington and Lincoln, as among the men who saved America, according to Picone. “His reputation was sky high the generation after he died,” the author says. “But with the rise of the Confederate Lost Cause mythology that brought these Confederate monuments to the narrative (in the early 1900s); the ‘Birth of a Nation’ movie which drove a lot, Grant’s reputation started to crater and Robert E. Lee’s skyrocketed.”
Monuments have come under such scrutiny, including Grant’s Tomb — which the author writes about. “It kind of lined up almost perfectly with what was happening in history but definitely wasn’t the intention,” says Picone. “One thing I hadn’t considered is next year will be 200 years since Grant was born. That, and Grant’s special on the History Channel last year and the re-evaluation of the Reconstruction Period, there’s this renewed focus on Grant.” The author has spoken widely on the topic of the presidents and places we commemorate them. He is an adjunct professor of history at William Paterson University. “History and presidential history came to me later in life,” Picone says, adding his 15year interest quickly became an obsession. He maintains a nine-to-five job as an IT professional, but is thrilled the new book is connecting with people. “The response has been wonderful; it’s inspiring them to learn more about Grant, visit the tomb; that’s been the best part for me,” says the author. “Grant has risen from fourth from the bottom to now number 20, the highest he’s ever been in these rankings. I think Grant’s Tomb is a testament to that.”

Roxbury’s Small Businesses Serve Up $5,000 For Local First Responders
A
GRADE Property Restoration, Roxbury Small Businesses, Town Officials, and local First Responders gathered at the Roxbury Fire Department Company this past week for a special check presentation. A GRADE Property Restoration owners, Christian and Jonathan Licciardi, were joined by Councilman Shawn Potillo along with representatives from local Small Businesses/ Event Sponsors to serve up a $5,000 check to the first responders of Roxbury Volunteer Fire & EMS Department, as a result of proceeds raised from the 1st Annual Volleyball ROX Charity Tournament. The 1st Annual Volleyball ROX Charity Tournament, hosted by A GRADE Property Restoration and the Fire Victims Fund, was held last month at Horseshoe Lake Park in Succasunna, NJ with the goal of raising $5,000 for local first responders to help purchase of life saving equipment. With COVID-19 restrictions lifting, the event’s focus was to help bring together the local small business community, First Responders, and local area residents with a fun community competition to raise money for a great cause. There were over 35 local small businesses that supported the charity tournament, as well as 12 volleyball teams that competed. A GRADE Property Restoration, a local Roxbury Small Business, came up with the idea of the Volleyball ROX Charity Tournament while brainstorming ways to give back to their community’s first responders. Both of A GRADE’s owners, Christian and Jonathan Licciardi, are avid volleyball players and can often be found playing pickup games at the Horseshoe Lake Volleyball courts. With one partner being a local Roxbury resident, part of A GRADE mission is to give back to the community at large. They look forward to bringing the Volleyball ROX Charity Tournament back again next year. Outside of organizing and hosting the Volleyball ROX Charity Tournament for Roxbury’s

First Responders, A GRADE Property Restoration has also adopted the area surrounding the volleyball courts as a part of the Town-wide Community Initiative “Adopt-A-Spot” Program to help the town keep the area clean of trash. Christian Licciardi, Owner of A GRADE Property Restoration, Roxbury Resident “As a Roxbury resident and a Roxbury Small Business Owner, it was such a prideful moment for us to be able to pull something together that would benefit the community and help the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department. Having the ability to host this special event for our First Responders really means a lot to us, our families, and our amazing team. The amount of support and enthusiasm we received from other Roxbury’s Small Businesses and the community was incredible.” Bob Hackett, Chief of Roxbury Fire & EMS Department, Roxbury Resident “On behalf of the Roxbury Fire and EMS Department, I would like to extend our thanks to A GRADE, Jonathan and Christian, for a great event. We would also like to thank to all of the Sponsors and team members that came to play in this first event. It was greatly appreciated.” Shawn Potillo, Roxbury Councilman, Roxbury Resident “On behalf of the Mayor and Council, I would like to thank A GRADE Property Restoration for their dedication to Roxbury Township and for hosting this event. I, firsthand, was able to witness the hard work and planning that went into this event. Thank you for thinking about the safety of our Roxbury residents, as it really means to a lot to us. Thank you to our Roxbury Firemen & Firewomen for your dedication to the community and for putting Roxbury’s residents first.”

The Endearing Uncle: The Importance of Precision
A
By Richard Mabey Jr. t least once a year, Uncle Pete and Aunt Alice would come to visit my mom, my sister Patti and myself at our home in The Villages. For decades, Uncle Pete had worked as a finishing carpenter, specifically in building new bowling alleys and repairing older ones. Uncle Pete was all so very detail oriented. During one of his visits, he noticed that a strip of floor molding was slightly popping up, going from the living room to the hallway leading to the bedrooms. Uncle Pete insisted on fixing the molding. As we both knelt on the floor, Uncle Pete carefully inspected the molding that was ever so slightly popping up. “See the problem, Richard? They didn’t properly square off the floor molding with the door molding. All you have to be is one millimeter off and it’s all no good. Nobody takes pride in their work anymore,” Uncle Pete would philosophize. Well, that day we ended up taking that floor molding off and Uncle Pete did his magic on it. I got out my dad’s old tool box and like a magician, who keeps it a secret how the magic trick is done, Uncle Pete ever so slightly recut the molding so that it was perfectly squared off. I got the old bottle of wood glue and together, Uncle Pete and I glued down the newly cut floor molding. “Got something heavy?” Uncle Pete then asked me. I told him that I had the perfect thing. I had some old red bricks in the backyard. I went out to get them and when I came back in, Uncle Pete was putting an old towel over the freshly glued floor molding. “If you put those bricks down on the floor molding, without a towel, the molding would have gotten scratched up,” Uncle Pete told me.
In the course of the week that Uncle Pete and Aunt Alice would stay with us, Uncle Pete would help me with a dozen or more little handyman chores that I had been waiting for a round tuit, to get to them. We reset the two birdbaths, so that they were perfectly level. We oiled all the door hinges. We changed a shower head in the bathroom. And, we trimmed the branches of the Live Oak tree in the front yard. “You don’t want branches blocking the Stop Sign, even a little bit. They can give you a fine for that,” Uncle Pete would tell me. Usually, it was midweek that we would all go to the steakhouse out on the highway. Uncle Pete would look around the restaurant, then study some detail, then say to me, “you see that light fixture on that hanging chandelier over there? It’s off something terrible. The problem is that they rush these building jobs these days. People don’t take pride in their work, like they used to,” Uncle Pete would reflect. Uncle Pete was all so much more than a carpenter, he was a master craftsman, a true artisan. He loved to build things. On his days off from work, and then after he retired, Uncle Pete would build bookshelves, coffee tables, tables for the family farm stand, and on and on. It was like the old joke about the shoemaker who repairs his family’s shoes on his days off. Or the bus driver, who takes his family on a long-distance drive across America on his vacation. Uncle Pete’s woodshed still stands in a corner of the vast Knothe Farm. His tools are still in neat order, hanging on the wall. His drill press and table saw mourn for him. It is a quiet tribute to this wonderfully gifted artisan. Peter E. Knothe went Home to be with the Lord on the fourteenth of April in 2018. For many years he served as a

Deacon in his church. He had served as a Volunteer Fireman in Randolph. He was the Treasurer of his Mason Lodge. He had volunteered hundreds and hundreds of hours, helping with fund raisers for the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, New Jersey. He was a member in good standing in the Randolph Historical Society and the Randolph Seniors Club. He touched the lives of hundreds of people. Now, when I come home to visit at the Knothe Farm, I can feel his spirit at the farm. His wisdom, his insight, his love for people still lives on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. “Sister Cities”: Randolph, New Jersey, Meet Randolph, Massachusetts
R
By Steve Sears andolph, Massachusetts has much to offer, whether just driving through town and desiring a quick meal, or even staying over night or for a few days and seeking to visit nearby spots. The latter is recommended and, even though Boston is just 15 miles north and, yes, history and much more abounds there, the reader will soon learn that Randolph itself also is a worthy trek for many reasons. Henry Cooke, town historian, was born and raised in Randolph. “I grew up in the town, and aside from years away at school in college, I’ve pretty much lived here. I currently live in the house my grandparents bought when they moved from Boston in 1941. It (Randolph) was originally part of the town of Braintree,” he says, “and when the city of Quincy split off in 1792, we followed suit a year later.” The town was incorporated in 1793. Randolph, a town of about 10 square miles and 32,000 residents, is very accessible. Divided in half by Route 28, which runs north and south, there’s also Highway 24, a limited access road, which runs alongside the town, Route 139 runs through it, and historic Route 1 and Route 93 clip the top of it. By comparison, Randolph, New Jersey is
home to just about 26,000 people, was incorporated 7 years after its sister city from parts of Mendham in 1806, is more than double the size at 21 square miles, and Routes 10 and 513 (the latter perhaps more scenic) are convenient roadways to get you to your destination. There are “slumbering spots” in Randolph, Massachusetts, a Comfort Inn at the northern tip and a Holiday Inn Express & Suites in the southwestern part of town, and even though dining is a cornucopia of varieties, two eateries are recommended. La Scala Ristorante, which has been around for about 40 years, is the highlight Italian restaurant, and then what Cooke describes as “probably our least sexy but most iconic eatery, the Lynwood Cafe, which has what we like to think is the best pizza south of Boston.” On a weekend night, sometimes the wait for a pie is as long as two hours. “A little hole in the wall. They don’t serve salads, they don’t serve other Italian food, they serve pizza, and something to drink with your pizza.” Lynwood Café is located at the corner of Center and South Streets. History buffs will want to visit both the Jonathan Belcher House on Route 28 and West Street, a historic home and museum which currently is used by the Randolph

is Norroway Pond, where visitors can rent kayaks and paddle around the pond. Cooke adds, “There’s a picnic pavilion where many people go in the summer months just to sit and have a picnic, or just to sit and enjoy the birds and the fresh air, watch the woodchucks and the geese or the ducks go do their thing, and there are also nature trails.” As for notable folks who are from Randolph, Massachusetts, National Hockey League fans may remember Rod Langway, who played with both the Montreal Canadi-

Attract More Birds to Your Backyard
W
ith all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards - nature, in particular - for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Despite the worldwide crisis, nature’s normalcy remained intact; flowers continued to bloom, bees continued to pollinate and birds continued to fly and forage food. Feeding birds can be enjoyable for any age group and provide stress relief for all who partake. A University of Exeter study, focused on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw during afternoons at home. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds - quantity not “quality” - the study found. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus. Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home. Interest in birding isn’t slowing down.
If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start. The experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products Co. offer these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard. Feeders A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. An option like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to food and protect it from rain. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with state-ofthe-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quick-clean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Just push a button and the bottom of the feeder pops off for easy access to the inside. Rinse the feeder with soapy water, dunk it into a water-bleach solution at a concentration of 9-to-1, rinse, dry and reattach the bottom. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease.
Popular Foods Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. All-natural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all-natural black oil sunflower and Cole’s “Hot Meats” (sunflower meats infused with habanero chili peppers that birds love and squirrels dislike). Or an option like Special Feeder blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Offering a wide variety, Cole’s feed is researched and specifically formulated to attract certain bird species, the largest number of birds and the greatest variety of birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a high-energy treat.
Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. For more information on attracting birds to your backyard, visit coleswildbird.com. (Family Features)

7 Tips for Planning an Extended Vacation
f you’re making the most of this year’s vacation by planning an extra-long trip, you’re not alone. Whether it’s extra vacation days that accumulated due to pandemic restrictions or pent-up desire for a change of scenery (or both), travelers are planning longer getaways. In fact, Vrbo data indicates travelers are 34% more likely to book a stay of at least seven nights and 31% less likely to book a three-night stay this summer. “After a year of storing away vacation days, this summer is quickly shaping up to be the season of PTO for many employees,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. If you’re considering an extended getaway, consider these tips help ensure your trip meets your expectations. Adjust your budget to accommodate the needs of a longer trip. A longer getaway obviously means more days of lodging and Photo courtesy of Getty Images more meals away from home, but don’t forget to account for other costs that come with an extended vacation like more days of parking at the airport and more entertainment expenses as a result of those extra days you’ll get to fill with fun. Choose a destination where you’ll find plenty to explore and enjoy over an extended period. Popular options this season on Vrbo include Outer Banks, North Carolina; Oak Island and Southport, North Carolina; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Rehoboth Beach and Fenwick Island, Delaware; and Jersey Shore, New Jersey. All of these coastal destinations offer a mix of entertainment and relaxation for a chance to truly refresh and recharge.
Create an itinerary, even if it’s loosely outlined, so you can make the best use of your vacation days. Keep an eye on the weather as you plan which days to spend on the beach or at the pool and when it might be better to see some sights indoors. Try to build in activities that appeal to each member of your travel party and aim for a balance between adventure and relaxation. Look for extended-stay amenities that offer convenience for your trip. When you’re away for a longer period of time, look for amenities that make your time more comfortable, like kitchens where you can prepare some of your meals. Shop for discounts to make a longer stay more affordable. For example, some Vrbo hosts offer discounts for new listings as well as week- or month-long stays. Travelers can use filters to find these discounted properties when searching for a place to stay. Avoid overpacking for an extended getaway. You may be tempted to pack extra clothes and other belongings, but that can weigh you down. Instead, choose outfits you can mix and match, and look for accommodations with laundry facilities so you can wash and re-wear clothing. Make arrangements to ensure your home life is in order. Being away for an extended period may mean a little extra work to maintain things back home. For example, you may need to arrange for someone to water your plants, take care of your pets, check your mail and receive deliveries. Start planning your extended getaway at Vrbo.com. I Remember Dad: Remembrances of the God and Country Award
A
By Richard Mabey Jr. uthor’s Note: My dad and the late Reverend Fred Herwaldt, of the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park, worked together as a team, to provide a wholesome, educational, quality year-long program for Boy Scouts to earn the God and Country Award. Most people think that when my dad stepped down from his 28-year service as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 in 1994, that he had totally retired from volunteer service in scouting. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dad was 66 years old when he retired as Scoutmaster of good old Troop 170. He had already had a heart attack. It was becoming more and more difficult for him to put a full pack on his back and lead the boys on a hike on the Appalachian Trail. It became more and more difficult for him to camp out. But my father wasn’t about to give up on his ministry to serve others. My dad firmly believed that it was better to shape a boy to become a moral gentleman than to rehabilitate a wayward man. And thus, in 1994 my dad began serving as an Advisor for the Boy Scouts of America’s Protestant religious award, God and Country, through the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park.
Dad worked closely with the late Reverend Fred Herwaldt, in leading the year-long classes in order for the scouts to earn the God and Country Award. Dad served as an Advisor for the God and Country Award from 1994 till 2000. During this time, Dad touched the hearts and minds of many boys, guiding them to follow the golden light of truth, to follow a moral compass, and to love the Lord. The God and Country Award is a combination of scholastic study of the Holy Bible interweaved with very practical ways for a boy to apply the teachings of the Bible to serve his family, church, and community. I often reflect on how many boys’ lives my father touched through his 36-year service as a volunteer Scout Leader. For Dad had served two years as Committeeman in Troop 170, from 1964 to 1966. He served 28 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 170, from 1966 to 1994. And, Dad served six years as an Advisor for the God and Country Award. At the end of the year-long classes, Dad and Reverend Herwarldt would lead the boys on a day-long hike on the Appalachian Trail, starting at High Point, New Jersey and ending in eastern Pennsylvania. I had the high honor to also lead the scouts on this adventurous hike, each year.
A photo of my dad (right hand side) and Reverend Fred Herwaldt. This picture was taken in the early Summer of 1995, after the annual God and Country Award Ceremony. The scouts were always presented their well-earned God and Country Award, during a church service at the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park.
One of the highlights, of this annual sojourn, was that we would all stop along the trail and cook lunch. After lunch, Dad and Reverend Herwaldt would lead the scouts in an informal church service beneath the oaks, the maples, and the evergreens. The boys would sit on logs and rocks, just a few yards off from the trail. It was such always such a meaningful and heart-moving little time. Both, Dad and Reverend Herwaldt, have
since passed away. I miss them both, all so very much. Few people know of the many hours that these two gentlemen put into having a very successful God and Country Award program. For all their selfless hard work, I am so very grateful. For truly, they touched the lives of so very many boys. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. An Eerie, Haunting August Story
B
By Richard Mabey Jr. ack in the far etched memories of the deepest caverns of heart and mind lies another time, another place. For myself and my endearing neighborhood friends, a most deep and powerful truth was granted unto us, at such an early time in life. For it was in late August of 1967, that the good Lord showed me all I had to be thankful for, all I had to be utmost grateful for. It was an endearing spiritual lesson, unfolded before my very eyes, that to this very day, still looms a most eerie and haunting quality in the deepest chords of my very heart. To say that we were all neighborhood friends, does not quite define it. For the four of us were more like brothers. For in truth, we shared a spiritual closeness that even most brothers are not quite acquainted with. It was the romantic era, the days of innocence, the summer of all for one and one for all. We would play baseball in the old back field, at the end of Mabey Lane, for hours and hours. We rode our bicycles down Main Street, for the mile-long ride, just to buy a bottle of Dad’s Root Beer and a Snickers bar at Moe’s Sweet Shop. We camped out in
each other’s backyards. We explored Hook Mountain, just south of Route 202. We fell in love with the same neighborhood girls. We walked the wooded path to the old Morris Canal. We cut the palms of our hands and pressed them together to become blood brothers of the wind, the earth, the moon and the sun. But it was in late August of 1967, that a sacred moment of truth came to us all, from which our lives would never quite be the same. My cousin Edward, lived right next to me in the carriage house along Mabey Lane. Sadly, it no longer remains. George Yost lived right across the street from me, along historic Route 202. And, Joey lived to the left-hand side of George. We were all relatively close in age, we were all filled with a love for life, a sense of adventure, and our hearts were filled with all of the longing, desire, and exhilaration to experience all that life could grant us. And now it was late August, the magical time of Summer would soon fade from us, and we would have to face the drudgery of classrooms, teachers, white chalk on blackboards, homework, and the bullies of the schoolyard. But for now, this moment, we still had the few remaining days of late

August to cherish and bask in, beneath the sweltering sun. Jose Hernandez was a part of the larger circle of our neighborhood gang. He was one of a good dozen boys, to whom the
core four were friends with, but to whom we never let be known the sacred, secret handshake of the core four. We were always kind and cordial to the rest of the continued on page 24

neighborhood boys, but we instinctively knew that the brotherhood of the core four, could be watered down by being extended out to too many others. We knew very little about Jose. None of us knew him from school. Jose carried with him, a certain mystical, mysterious quality that for the most part, remained unspoken. When we played baseball at the backfield at the end of Mabey Lane, Jose would come running from the path in the northern woods and just join in with us. Jose never had his own baseball glove, so he would borrow one of ours, when it was our team’s turn to be at bat. Jose spoke broken English. He taught us some words in Spanish. We all assumed that he lived in Towaco, across the canal, across the railroad tracks. We all figured that he lived in the apartments that once abounded at the end of Bellows Lane. There was a certain unspoken rule of kiddom of the 1960’s that you just didn’t ask a fellow kid, a thousand and one questions. It came upon us in the early morning of late August 1967. Jose told us that his mom was cooking chicken enchiladas for lunch. Jose told us that he had told his mom all about his wonderful friends, who lived in Lincoln Park. Jose always referred to us as his “friends who lived in Lincoln Park.” It’s the main reason that we assumed that he lived in the apartments at the end of Bellows Lane. At any rate, Jose told us that his mom had invited us all to

have lunch with him and his mom. We were all elated. None of us had ever had enchiladas before. In fact, we had no idea what they were! So, without further ado that morning, we chose up sides for yet another baseball game. We played ball until the town whistle blew, announcing that high noon had arrived. And, then Jose, led us down the wooded path to the old Morris Canal. When we reached the canal, Jose led us to make a left along the canal path, heading west, to the border of Towaco and Lincoln Park. There in the midst of the woods along the canal, just to the west of the remains of Incline Plane Ten East, was the sighting that would change our lives. Jose led us to a village of sorts. This forested village was a clearing filled with tents and make-shift wooden shacks. Despite all of our adventurous sojourns to the old Morris Canal, we had never walked this far to the west. Most of the time we walk the path to the easterly direction to end up on Beaverbrook Road. Jose led us to his wooden shack. It was a small, woodframed home, that seemed to have been built in less than a day. Outside, Jose’s mom was cooking the chicken for the enchiladas in a big, black, cast-iron skillet above an open flame. The heavy skillet rested upon four cinder blocks, all strategically placed to balance the big skillet. There were old folding chairs abounding in the area. Two old card tables served as the dining room table. Jose’s
PAINTING
mother spoke little English. But enough so that we could understand her. And, when we could not grasp what she was saying, Jose would be her interpreter. The four of us sat at the two chipped and worn card tables, with Jose and his mom. Jose and his mom explained that Jose’s dad was a migrant farm worker, working at one of the local farms. After lunch, we all most properly thanked Jose’s mother for making lunch for us. Then Jose explained that he had to help his mom clean up, but that he would be up to play ball with us later on. We all left the little encampment. We then walked the easterly canal path to the point where we would head up through the forest path, to our open field. We all said very little, as we walked the forest path. The sorrow in our hearts, loomed like the haunting aura of clouds passing by a full moon. We were never to be the same again. We all held an unspoken tide of compassion for Jose, from that time on. In September of 1967, I started my freshman year at Boonton High School. Eddie, Joey, and George were all soon to complete their days of attending middle school. We never formally said goodbye to Jose. He just seemed to fade from our lives, before the first snowfall came upon us that winter. None of us were ever to see Jose again. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. 3 Ways to Protect Your Houseplants From Bugs
f you have recently started or expanded a houseplant collection, congratulations! You’ve improved your indoor air quality and have added life and vibrancy to your home. At the same time however, your indoor garden may be attracting bugs that can harm your precious plants and annoy you. Unfortunately, not everyone notices an infestation right away. The average household, for example, won’t recognize a fly problem until they’re five flies deep, but even one fly can lead to a larger problem. Follow these three tips to protect your houseplants -- and household -- from bugs: 1. Water plants carefully: Standing water creates a breeding ground for flying insects such as fungus gnats, which are very small and usually appear in swarms. Because these insects grow in moist soil and their larvae feed on plant roots, you can manage such infestations by reducing the amount of water you give your plants and by improving soil drainage. 2. Take action fast: Did you know that
in just one week, flying insects can lay eggs that hatch and mature into more adults ready to breed? For this reason, it’s important to be vigilant and take action at the first sign of a bug problem. 3. Don’t let your guard down: Defend against fruit flies, gnats and flies 24/7 with a Zevo Flying Insect Trap. Just plug the trap into a regular outlet near your houseplants and wherever flying insects enter your home or gather. Rather than chemical insecticides, the traps use multi-spectrum light technology to lure flying bugs to their doom in a discreet glue sheet cartridge. When the cartridge is full, just replace it and toss the used one without ever having to touch a dead bug. To learn more, visit zevoinsect.com. Taking proper care of plants goes beyond watering them and giving them the right amount of sunlight. It also means safeguarding them from pests. The good news is that by making just a few tweaks, you can offer plants round-the-clock protection from insects. (StatePoint)

Do You Believe in These Three Common 401(k) Misconceptions?
f you contribute a portion of your income to a 401(k), you may think you’re all set for a comfortable retirement. Experts say it’s important to take a closer look at these savings. To help you get started, Lincoln Financial Group is breaking down three common misconceptions about saving for retirement revealed in a recent survey of U.S. employees by Lincoln Financial and CivicScience: • True or False: “Saving enough to meet the employer match is enough to keep me on track for a comfortable retirement.” This one is (most likely) false! An employer match (if offered) is a good place to start, but if you really want to make sure you have enough of a nest egg to retire when and how you want, a good rule of thumb is to save at least 10 to 15 percent of your salary. • True or False: “Paying down my student loan debt as quickly as possible is more important than saving for my retirement.” This can be true…or false, depending on your situation. While you should not delay saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to determine how to strategize paying off debt while also planning for your future. You can also use free tools like the debt calculator found at LincolnFinancial.com to help you make a plan for paying off debt. • True or False: “I’ve thought about moving money from an old employer’s 401(k) into my current employer’s 401(k), but it seems like it would be too much of a hassle.” This one is false! While it is important to consider all options of your 401(k) platform prior to making a decision, the process for
a rollover is typically very easy and brings multiple benefits. Instead of tracking investment selections, performance or statements for multiple accounts, for example, you’ll only have to monitor a single account. “While there are certainly still some misconceptions when it comes to saving for the future, the majority of those surveyed understand the importance of not delaying saving for later in their careers,” said Aaron Moore, senior vice president, Retirement Plan Client Engagement, Lincoln Financial Group. “This is cause for celebration, as delaying saving for retirement can have a significant impact on future savings. This is another reason why we are focused on working with employers to educate their employees so they can achieve the retirement they envision.” If you’re looking for more ways to help set yourself up for a financially secure future – here are three tips to keep in mind: 1. Check your account. It might sound simple, but logging in regularly (try for at least once a quarter) can help ensure you’re on track with your savings goal. Be sure to use the calculators and projection tools your retirement plan offers. 2. Update (or create) a goal. When you have a goal to work towards, research shows you’ll be more likely to increase your contributions, and therefore, increase your savings. 3. Meet with a professional. If your employer offers retirement consultants, schedule a meeting, or consider speaking with a financial professional, who can help you
understand the full picture of your savings and where to focus your efforts. For more resources, tools and calculators, visit LincolnFinancial.com/retirement. A comfortable financial future is achievable with a strategy. To take stock of your retirement savings, start with your 401(k). (StatePoint)
