Celebrating 30 Years of Halloween Thrills, Roxbury’s Halloween House Will be a Sweet Returning Treat

By Dawn M Chiossi hen the weather cools, and brisk breezes start to stir, it is a sure sign that autumn is in the air. Can Halloween be far behind?

Some people just revel in the holidays; their decorated homes can be a spooky treat for the season--even a can’t-miss tradition. Take Roxbury’s Heard family for example.

Celebrating 30 years of Halloween thrills, Craig, Madeline, and the Heard family invite everyone to their annual Halloween House display. Taking place on Halloween night, October 31st, hours will be from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Located at 2 Alcott Way in Succasunna, this amazing Halloween tradition has been

thrilling friends and neighbors since the 1980s.

An indoor and outdoor display, the Halloween House is completely free, and perfect for all ages. “There are no jump-out and scare techniques, we make our display family-friendly like a Disney Display with animation,” Heard shares. “It’s a great chance for families to enjoy and leave the wallet at home.”

Additionally, the Heard’s hire a police officer to watch traffic and families to keep the event safe. Their goal is to bring a funfilled day to others and simply see the joy and smiles on other people’s faces.

continued from front page even having design meetings in the summer. Decorations are mostly homemade by the Heard’s themselves, and they hunt for animated characters throughout the year.

A resident of Roxbury since 1983, Heard’s Halloween House display fits right in with his work, a family-owned media outdoor advertising company. In fact, the whole Heard family gets involved in the Halloween spirit, it is in their genes. For them, it’s all about fun, props, and letting the artistry flow. Heard’s son, Craig Jr, is “co-producer/creative director and my right hand,” he says.

A real family affair, Heard, his three adult children, cousins, and close family friends are also involved in the six-week setup.

Heard explains that they started out with carved pumpkins in their front hallway in the ’80s, then to children Melissa, Craig, and Kristen dangling skeletons in the front hall, to hand painted tombstones in the front yard with fun sayings on them. Adding to it, everyone was relishing the Halloween decorating. “As we developed more ideas, we would build more props, and seek online displays,” he tells. “Thanks to our son-in-law Rusty he ended up building the horse-drawn hearse, the small pirate ship, front cemetery gate, hangman’s noose, and

many more tombstones.”

Growing and expanding throughout the years, Heard explains that the pirate theme has been the dominating one of his Halloween House display.

Large, intricate, and extensive, this is an entertaining time for all; a true sensory experience. “The base theme is Pirates of the Caribbean, the large ship is a model of the Black Pearl,” Heard prides. “The pirate theme is often expanded on throughout the years. There are ship attacks, cannons being shot off of the bridge, an Egyptian Rain Forest theme, and dinosaurs attacking the pirates.” Heard explains, “This theme started about four years ago and expands each year when they were caged and escaped last year. Now, all the dinosaurs will surround the Black Pearl.”

The Halloween House has even expanded to the inside with three room themes, including a funeral site in the front hall, a Rogan master and funeral viewing guests on the right side of the hall, an operating room on the left side of the hall, as well as displays in the dining room and living room.

Heard explains that the themes are a wonderful 50/50 mixture of favorites and the innovative new. Attendees will love keeping an eye out to see what has changed

from last year’s Halloween House.

This year he is thrilled to announce they will have a fun light show along with smoke machines and black lights.

Bigger and better than ever, Heard quips that his Halloween House has gone from pumpkins to theme park, and he is only half-joking.

“Last year we had over 6,000 visitors,” he prides. “Families just love it and tell their friends to come. I love the challenge of engaging (the display) in new layouts, and dressing it up. We now have three generations coming from many of the same families. It is always fun to hear kids and fami-

lies talk about it and identify changes in the display each year. As I am the greeter in the front hall handing out chip bags to the kids, it’s fun to hear their comments and the appreciation from the parents for what we do each year.”

In true generous spirit, Heard ends his annual Halloween labor of love with a celebration. “The following Saturday after Halloween we have a private event; a backstage tour and buffet for our friends and neighbors to thank them for putting up with the display and for helping,” he shares.

Then, of course, Heard begins thinking of next year’s Halloween.

What Does It Mean to be an American?

By Connie Schultz t was a wonderful birthday dinner, the kind we friends have come to expect whenever we arrive to celebrate the person who is about to blow out the candles. We leave feeling lucky to be alive, every last one of us.

This dinner, however, took an interesting turn after the guest of honor broke character and raised her hand to silence us. This is not her practice.

She had a question. What does it mean, to each of us, to be an American?

We were about a dozen women, all of us over 50, sitting around her dining room table in the city of Cleveland. Our abrupt silence was unusual, not counting the times we have bowed our heads together in prayer, ever so briefly. We are used to one another and the laughter we bring to any room in which we are gathered. And yet here we were, suddenly quiet and perhaps a bit sullen as we mulled the issue at hand.

Who are we now, as Americans?

Implicit in the question is the acknowledgment that we are no longer who we used to be. If age has anything to do with it, it›s only in the depth and breadth of our experience, which we can›t ignore.

We›ve never lived in a time such as this.

Watergate feels so manageable now, a scary diagnosis with a positive outcome.

Life with Donald Trump is triage, and no one has the necessary training to predict our odds.

One by one, we shared our thoughts.

Each of us has our own definitions of citizenship and patriotism, but a universal theme unspooled.

We feel differently about America, and our role in it.

We are not an insulated group. Four in attendance are members of the LGBTQ community, with long memories of lives,

We were reminded of that unfortunate fact this week when President Trump withdrew an apparently secret invitation to the Taliban to visit Camp David. The Taliban was, is and will remain an Islamic terror group; it has continuously sought the murder of American soldiers and citizens for two decades. Why would the Trump administration think it a good idea to sign an agreement with radicals who seek to overthrow the administration of Afghanistan, support terrorism and despise the United States?

Do members of the administration truly believe that any agreement signed by the Taliban will be binding?

The answer, of course, is no. That›s why the talks fell apart, according to The New York Times -- a response from inside the administration in the aftermath of a terror attack on American soldiers this week, a recognition of the obvious.

continued from page 4 These small snapshots don›t begin to describe all the living we had done before we sat down at that table at that moment. Every woman has her stories, and isn›t it a shame not everyone knows that?

Defining ourselves as Americans requires a distancing from those who think their residency-at-birth was an act of divine intervention. We have no control over where we are born, and to credit God for our geography is to cast doubt on his motives for everyone else. We are lucky, perhaps, but not the chosen.

That evening, we couldn›t talk about being Americans without veering into a discussion about what it means to be a patriot. Knowing the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and flying an American flag on Independence Day is showmanship, not stewardship.

If we define activism as a refusal to sit on the sidelines,

then so many women of my generation have become activists in ways they never thought they would be. They refuse to be invisible when so many want us to believe our time has passed. They speak up at family gatherings and refuse to apologize for the awkward silence. They write letters to editors and share their views on social media, and show up for one another when any one of them is under attack.

One of my closest friends, who has spent much of her life keeping the peace, now calls her Republican U.S. senator almost daily to demand that he stand up to Trump›s racism and violent rhetoric. She provides her name and address, and is never insulting or rude. When a live voice answers the phone, she assures the staffer that her outrage is directed at the senator because he is the one selected to serve the American people, and he is letting his country down.

On that night, at that birthday dinner, we talked about

all of this, and so much more, filled with hope no matter what. That›s what happens when women gather. We draw strength from one another, and then we go back out into the world, for the world.

Isn’t it a shame not everyone knows that?

All of which means that American troops are likely to remain in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Few politicians will be bold enough to simply state that truth. After all, when John McCain said as much in 2008, he was roundly mocked by Barack Obama -- the same Obama who escalated the war in Afghanistan and retained thousands of troops there, despite promising withdrawal repeatedly. But our politicians should be brave enough to recognize that a weaker America on the world stage means a more vulnerable America at home. If we didn›t learn that lesson on 9/11,

we›re bound to repeat it.

For 30 Years, Roxbury High School Has Delivered Student-Produced Content

By Steve Sears aelvision, the Roxbury High School Student Media Group, in 2019 is celebrating 30 years in broadcasting.

Deborah Burleigh, certified to teach TV and AV Broadcasting and Elementary Education, has been the advisor to Gaelvision since 2010, and Roxana Caivano, Gaelvision Media Specialist, joined Burleigh in 2011 as co-advisor.

“Mrs. Caivano is the glue that keeps it all together,” attests Burleigh. “She manages the operations of our program and has been an incredible addition to our team. It’s hard for us to be everywhere but having someone to manage the busy schedule of RHS which makes it easier. We have a great relationship, and both love the program and students. We probably have just as much fun as they do covering events, because we are both big fans of our Gaels, and Roxana is a Gael alum!”

Gaelvision had its genesis in 1989 as Prime Time Roxbury. Burleigh speaks about the early days. “Rich Cooper was the long-time teacher connected with Prime Time Roxbury as well as Bill Martin who was our Media Specialist. They had a full studio where shows were created on a monthly basis. Bill had a tremendous background in technology and Rich had such a great rapport with the students they built a great program.” Burleigh came on board in 2005 as Director of Community Relations & Community School and worked with both teachers to create a district wide show that appeared on the cable network channel

77. “We had a 30-minute show,” recalls Burleigh, “that highlighted events happening in all of our schools.”

The name was changed to Gaelvision in 2012. “During this time,” says Burleigh, “we refocused on what we felt was needed, and with media releases being more challenging at the elementary level, we had more control of the program if we focused at the high school. It was also easier for students to cover events here, and when we went to block scheduling it became challenging to release students from class to cover events at the other schools.

The key focus was Everything RHS! We had a relationship with MSG Varsity that promoted content for them, then their program was eliminated, so we created our own. We use many media platforms - Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and Instagram - to share the story of RHS.” Gaelvision is a dedicated group that, In Burleigh’s words, “helps tell our story. They live stream football games, wrestling, soccer, and other sporting events, as well as scholarly programs such as NHS (National Honor Society) induction ceremonies and many fine arts programs. Our students away at college tune in, they miss it and it’s a great way to keep them connected. We have many families with out of town friends and relatives who would not be able to see games and special events without our live streaming service.”

“Challenges? We have students that are so involved, and the fan section is so fun that at times it’s hard to get students to want to come out of the fan section to cover events. That’s a good challenge having such an active student body. We make it work, though.” Burleigh also gives credit to the deserved. “We have grown tremendously, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of our former Principal and Administration who helped us get this far. We don’t have a studio with all the bells and whistles but have students covering real events on site, and that’s a great experience for them.

Nice things are on the horizon. “We do have some exciting news and we are in the beginning stages of launching a partnership with our school newspaper, The Roxbury Review,” states Burleigh. “We are going to have a platform on-line where you have complete access to the paper and student video productions. I think it’s progressive that we will have all of our media programs working together and highlighting our work in one forum. Tune in to our media outlets for updates this fall for our launch date.”

Randolph High School Athletics Will Induct Eight Members Into its Hall of Fame in October

By Jerry Del Priore n Saturday, October 19, at the Randolph High School Commons, the Randolph High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee (RHOF) will induct eight members into the Randolph High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Leading the luminary of inductees is Len Pietrewicz, a decorated and well-respected coach, who has been at the helm of the girls cross country and winter track teams for 48 years, and has been guiding the girls spring track team since 1982.

He has captured an unprecedented 15 state, nine county, and 13 conference cross country championships, while winning seven state, 35 county, and nine conference titles in winter track, and 10 state, 43 county, and 19 conference

Following Pietrewicz is Dr. Matthew Wainer, who was the first superintendent of Randolph Schools, starting in 1963 up until 1981. He was instrumental in the expansion of the Field House (1968), Fernbrook School (1971), Shongum School (1969), and New High School (1975).

Anne Standridge has enjoyed thirty plus years of service for Randolph Athletics, contributing on several committees and was the President of the Randolph Track Booster Club, and has been the Recreation Booster Club Treasurer since 2006.

Rob Tomaino was All-State in winter and spring track in 1981 and was a four-time pole vaulting County Champion and four-time Conference Champion.

Additionally, Tomaino holds the RHS record in the pole vault at 14’ 6”.

Tim Hakim had a historic wrestling career at RHS, winning the 1994 State Championship at 160 pounds. Plus, he was a three-time Regional Champion in 1992, 1993, 1994 (one of only 3 RHS three-time region champions), and District Title Holder in 1992, 1993, and 1994.

Hakim finished with an overall record of 121 wins and 10 losses, with only three defeats after his freshman year.

Pam Hovliaras was part of the 1983 All-State RHS Girls Cross Country Team, and a two-time Conference Champion and two-time State Sectional Winner.

Hall of Fame... continued from page 14 being inducted into the RHS Athletic HOF. The Ram grapplers were the 1993 Undefeated Group IV Champions (the only group wrestling champion in Ram history).

Also, RHS was undefeated in dual meets, with an 18-0 record (only the 1969 and 1970 teams were also undefeated); the Star Ledger ranked the Rams third in the state, as well as NJSIAA Coaches’ Poll; State Section Champs (North 2, Group IV); District Champions (seven individual champions); Dover Tournament Champions (five individual champions); Iron Hills Conference Champs; Morris County Tournament second place finish, behind Jefferson, and ranked No. 1 in New Jersey, with four individual title holders.

1987 RHS Football Team was a powerhouse, to say the least. The Rams enjoyed their first undefeated season, took home the North 2, Group 3 Sectional Title, and

were the Conference Champions as well.

RHS continued “the streak,” which began in 1986 and eventually reached a remarkable 55 games. The Star Ledger ranked the Rams No. 5 in New Jersey and were the Daily Record’s Team of the Year.

The Randolph High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee (RHOF) was formed by the Randolph Athletic Council (RAM RAC) in 2013.The first “class” was inducted into the RHOF in October 2014. There have been annual inductions every October since then.

To be eligible for induction into the RHOF, the following criteria must be met, candidates must have maintained a record of good citizenship, athletes, coaches, teams, athletic trainers and contributors who have made distinctive contributions to the athletic program are eligible candidates and candidates must be in good standing with the Randolph Board of Education, Randolph High School and Rams Athletic Council.

Roxbury’s Tito Santana to Wrestle for IWF Wounded Vets Charitable Card

By Jerry Del Priore hen it comes to lending a helping hand to the less fortunate, professional wrestlers Tito Santana, a Roxbury resident, and Kevin Knight always like to do what they can to help a worthy cause.

On Friday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Independent Wrestling Federation (IWF) will hold a special wrestling card in Nutley, called FIREPOWER, to raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund. The Semper Fi Fund is a non-profit 501c organization that provides a variety of programs to assist wounded veterans in all branches of the United States Armed Forces.

Santana, whose real name is Merced Solis, will wrestle on the card. Solis, 66, is an accomplished grappler, wrestling with the World Wrestling Federation from 1979 to 1993. He twice held the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship and was a two-time WWF Tag Team Title holder.

He also won the 1989 prestigious King of the Ring tournament, and WWE inducted Santana into its Hall of Fame in 2004, honoring his storied career in the squared circle.

Hauntings Around the Area for Halloween

by Elsie Walker alloween will soon be here. Many times on Halloween, or around camp fires, stories of ghosts; strange, creepy or haunted places; and recollections of strange occurrences are shared. Some people pass stories on from generation to generation until they become legend. However, others, like members of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society (NJGHS), investigate strange occurrences to see if there is a paranormal presence involved.

Recently, people from around the coverage area shared stories and sightings of local ghosts, rumors of haunted locations, and experiences with the paranormal.

Members of the online, “You Know You’re From Roxbury Township….” group recalled ghost tales and scary

sights. One popular ghost story was the Hooker Man. It is about a ghost seen by the Succasunna railroad tracks.

“The Hooker Man lost his hand in some freak train accident, and now searches for it with a lantern,” shared Mike Stark, Roxbury. However, it appears the Hooker Man has not only been seen in Roxbury, but Netcong, Flanders, Chester, and Long Valley also lay claim to the legend.

Cheryl McClung, a former area resident, who now lives in Georgia, shared, “At night, people see his [the Hooker Man’s] lantern bouncing along the tracks in Flanders on the west side of [Route} 206.

Dawn Traetta Hair, of Florida, another former Roxbury resident, remembers the stories of the former location of the Church of the Mystic Light in Flanders. The building is

closed, but there had been claims that witches had hung chickens and have had seances there. People still stop by it, out of curiosity, if not scared away.

Kim Howell Candore shared that there have been ghost sightings at her childhood home, “I was raised at 11 Meeker Street [in] Succasunna, next to the cemetery. There has been many spottings of two men in Civil War uniforms smoking, sitting on a tree stump in front of our old house,” said Candore, who now lives in Tennessee. Candore remembers that the two churches on Main Street, adjacent to the cemetery, used to be a military hospital.

2 large eggs 1/2 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese 1 pound ground pork 1 pound ground veal 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh Italian parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil 3 cups basic tomato sauce In small saucepan over medium heat, sweat onion and garlic.

In large bowl, soak bread in water 1-2 minutes. Strain excess liquid.

In separate large bowl, add eggs, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese and onion-garlic mixture. Combine then add ground meat, soaked bread, extra-virgin olive oil, parsley and oregano. Mix thoroughly.

Divide mixture evenly to form 10-12 meatballs and use hands to roll into shape.

In large saute pan over high heat, brown meatballs in grapeseed oil on all sides.

Place browned meatballs in separate saucepot with basic tomato sauce. Bring to simmer and finish cooking, about 1 hour.

Hauntings Around the Area... girl who was living at the hotel when her family owned it. She snuck down to the kitchen in the middle of the night for some ice cream. When she was headed out of the kitchen and into the dining room to sneak back upstairs, she was met with this bright, sparkling light and out of the light stepped a young girl – about the same age of the girl sneaking the ice cream – and the ghost girl was dressed from a different time period and clutching her teddy bear.

Hackettstown is the meeting site of the NJ Ghost Hunters Society. The society’s mission statement is “To search out definitive proof of life beyond the grave.

and director. She is the author of Ghosthunting New Jersey, Ghosthunting New York City, and Ghosts of the Poconos and has a variety of presentations on the paranormal which will be given at area libraries this month (listed on the bottom of www. njghs.net/presentations.html).

Recently, Hoffman recalled stories she was told of two ghosts who are said to haunt Bea McNally’s (formerly Charlie Brown Restaurant). In 1878, the place was the Clarendon House (hotel) and from 1926-1947 it was the Hackettstown Inn. “The ghost girl appeared to a young

about the mess in the dining room, they did not believe her about the ghost girl she saw. However, a couple weeks later, the father saw the ghost girl, too.”

As for the other ghost, Hoffman said there are various origin stories as to who he is. Most have to do with drowning. Two versions have him as a child who was staying upstairs and died while unattended in the bathtub. Hauntings Around the Area... continued from page 20 bath and drank a bottle of gin and passed out and drowned.” However, most seem to think the ghost is a child as they have got the sensation of someone wanting to ride on their shoulders or putting a small hand into theirs.

Over the years there have been other stories of ghostly presence at the location, such as unexplained footsteps and, when there was a pool hall at the location, how when it was unlocked for business one day, instead of the cleaned pool hall, cues, etc. were strung all over.

In Pompton Lakes, Laura Jennings, a member of the historic commission there, shared about some caring spirits at the Schuyler Colfax house ( Hamburg turnpike, Wayne) “Dr. Jane Colfax Young grew up in the house with her father (Dr. Richard S. Colfax) and Aunt (also Dr. Jane Colfax). Katherine Young, daughter to Jane Colfax Young, shared that she spent a lot of time in the home until he was ten years old. Both her and her father felt and saw things in the house that they are sure were the spirits of their ancestors watching over them. The Colfax family is one of the founding families in the area.”

Jennings also shared that she had heard reports of ghost sightings at the Lenox School in Pompton Plains.

Morristown has had its own dealing with the paranormal. Pat Goodfriend, Membership & Volunteer Coordinator for the Morris County Historical Society

shared a short 2016 article by Y. McGreevy on Ford Mansion. The mansion at the Morristown National Historical Park is over 200 years old. Once the home of George Washington (briefly during 1780), the mansion drew the interest of Gordon Thomas Ward, a paranormal investigator, who in 2016, did a presentation on the Mansion and his two-year study of it, including the noises said to be coming from inside its walls. An article by B. LaMuraglia the same year shows that during the time of his investigation, Ward heard the voices of three male and two female spirits. None were Washington; Ward felt at least one could have been a kitchen servant.

Bells Mansion, near the Netcong-Stanhope border has also been the subject of a paranormal study. That was shared by Tom Lupo of Hopatcong, a producer who followed the NJ Ghost Hunters Society when it investigated the restaurant six years ago. The segment includes a worker recalling seeing the spirit of a woman. He was cleaning up after the restaurant had closed. There are windows between the rooms. He looked up and saw a woman, seated in the next room, looking out at the road. He watched her for about 10 seconds and then went to approach her. When he walked into that room, she was gone.

This Halloween, will the Hooker Man or the little girl ghost at Bea McNally’s be seen? Will voices whisper through Ford Mansion or the Lenox School? Perhaps, this year, a new spirit will be seen and its legend begun.

Kirchdoerffer said some of the ways MPAC will be celebrating its 25 years in Morristown are by holding a few free concerts, ask its performance-goers, on social media, to name their favorite moments since its opening, and have a number of $25 ticket offers, to name a few.

However, MPAC is more than a concert hall for some of today’s greatest acts. It also offers a Performing Arts School (PAS), founded in 2006, which now serves approximately 700 students per year with over 20 classes a week within a supportive and creative atmosphere.

Students ages five to 18 come from all over Northern New Jersey to learn performance technique while building confidence and having a great time.

Classes are offered in musical theatre, acting, singing technique, song presentation, improvisation, private voice and adult cabaret.

“The emphasis isn’t placed on being a star,” Kirchdoerffer explained. “It’s placed on being part of a team, being part of the creative process. They really get a full immersive experience. Everyone’s so encour-

aging of everyone else.”

While most of the kids don’t enter the entertainment world, Kirchdoerffer noted that they will gain valuable skills that will help them succeed in life.

“Most won’t go on to become performers,” he said, “but they will learn important life skills that will go a long way, whether it’s in the boardroom or other areas of work.”

Additionally, MPAC offers The Miracle Project, a fully inclusive music and theatre program for children with autism of all levels.

“It’s been a very powerful program,” Kirchdoerffer said. “This is a program that grew organically. Many parents have spoken about (their experiences) and are happy to see their kids enjoy themselves. This (program) gives them a safe haven. They get to have fun while being themselves.”

There’s also an Art Upstairs Gallery, located in the balcony lobby of MPAC, which showcases visual artists from a variety of disciplines, including watercolor, oils, photography, sculpture and more. Each year, the works of over 200 artists are show-

cased in group exhibits. Each display hangs from six to eight weeks.

With all the success MPAC has experienced over the last 25 years, Kirchdoerffer said he hopes to see more prosperous years ahead for the Morristown institution, which has been a staple in the thriving town.

“We have been here for 25 years and hope to do it for 25 more years and beyond,” he said. “It’s been the town’s heartbeat.”

Morris County Sheriff’s Office Hope One Staff Trains Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill on Use of Narcan to Reverse Opioid Overdose

nited States Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and seven of her staff members were trained Monday, August 26,

by Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon’s Hope One team on how to use Narcan to reverse an opioid addiction.

Sheriff Gannon and partners in the Hope One mobile substance use resource and recovery program met at the Congresswoman’s 11th Legislative District office in Parsippany after she, earlier in the day, had met with substance use treatment providers in Sussex and Morris counties.

Sheriff Gannon was joined by Robert Davison, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties; MHA Director of Self-Help, Advocacy and Education Madine Despeine-Udoh, MHA Board of Directors Vice President Barbara Small; Kelly LaBar, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist for the Rockaway-based Center for Addiction Recovery, Education & Success (CARES); and Morris County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ashley Craig.

The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties and CARES are partners with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office on Hope One, which was launched on April 3, 2017, to bring critical recovery options and resources to Morris County communities.

Kelly LaBar gave the Congresswoman and her staff a detailed power point presentation on how to recognize an opioid overdose and administer the nasal spray Naloxone, known by the brand name Narcan, to reverse an overdose. Peer Recovery Specialist LaBar used a mannequin to demonstrate the correct way to administer a 4 milligram dose of Narcan and described how substance use disorders imperil not only the users but their families and friends. Addiction is not a source of shame since it affects people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, she said.

“People don’t get better if they have to hide,” Specialist LaBar said.

The Congresswoman told the Sheriff she knows police choose law enforcement careers out of a genuine desire to help people and protect communities. Hope One, she said, has carried that work further by not only teaching the use of Narcan but assisting people with accessing resources.

“To simply give somebody Narcan without more feels a little defeating,” she said.

“To really have other programming that you’re focused on to actually help someone through recovery is really helpful.”

Sheriff Gannon applauded the Congresswoman for her interest and compassion on

the subject of opioid abuse.

“I commend Congresswoman Sherrill and her staff for taking the time to be trained in the use of Narcan and hear about the journey Hope One has been on for the past 28 months to try to curb the heroin and opioid epidemic that doesn’t recognize any economic, race or political boundaries,” Sheriff Gannon said.

MHA Executive Director Davison also praised the presentation and the Congresswoman’s reception to the training.

“One of the things we’ve learned as a society is that the opioid epidemic doesn’t discriminate. Furthermore, we’ve learned we have to cooperate with each other to deal with it. Every family, if not experiencing

it, knows a family that is. No one is spared.

It’s part of the human condition,” Director Davison said.

Through its partnership with CARES and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office’s receipt of a $332,658 grant from the United States Justice Department, Hope One is able to give individuals who are trained in Narcan a free kit of the antidote to use if and when the emergency arises.

The Hope One team, since April 3, 2017, has made contact with more than 8,065 individuals, assisted 147 people in obtaining recovery or rehabilitation treatment, connected 105 people with mental health services, and trained at least 1,891 people on how to use Narcan.

The Morristown Festival of Books is Back

By Henry M. Holden he Morristown Festival of Books is an annual two-day event that takes place this year on October 11 and 12.

According to Rachel Barry, Director of the Morristown Festival of Books, “The 6-year-old event is modeled after successful book festivals in other communities throughout the world. Each autumn, the festival brings together authors with readers and book lovers. The Festival is New Jersey’s premier book festival, celebrating the written word’s power to challenge, transport and transform.”

Barry says the festival is growing each year. “We started with about 1,500 visitors six years ago and last year we hosted over 8,000.”

The opening night is a ticketed Keynote Event featuring Preet Bharara who served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, Bharara joined the NYU School of Law faculty as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence. Bharara will speak on Friday evening at the Mayo Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm.

Tickets will be available through the MPAC box office and on the festival website. Tickets are also available at the door on the night of the event, as availability allows.

The Main Festival takes place all day on Saturday (10 a.m.

– 5 p.m.), rain or shine.

This year’s festival features more than 50 authors. Author selections featuring various genres are designed to appeal to a variety of ages and reading interests.

“Authors will be speaking and answering questions in informal one-hour indoor sessions at five festival venues

throughout the day,” said Barry. “Immediately following his or her talk, you will have the opportunity to speak with your favorite authors and have your books personalized at the Author Signing Tent, on the Vail Mansion lawn.” These sessions are free, no tickets required; general seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be portable restrooms at the Vail Mansion lawn.

“The Festival center is on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion (110 South Street), where there is an Information Tent, a Book Tent selling copies of the visiting authors’ books, the Signing Tent where authors will greet visitors and sign books, and concession stands selling refreshments.”

“This year’s closing event is an exciting interactive event called Pitchapalooza,” said Barry. “It’s like American Idol for books (only without Simon). Anyone with an idea for a book has the chance to pitch it to a panel of judges. But they get only one minute.”

The hosts, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry (a.k.a.

The Book Doctors) team up with guest industry insiders to

form the judging panel. The Judges critique everything from idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much more. Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapaloozas are educational and entertaining for all. All attendees come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing industry.

At the end of each Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner. That winner receives an introduction

by Eckstut and Sterry to an agent or publisher who is appropriate for their work. The Festival audience will also have a chance to pick a winning pitch. That Audience Choice winner will be voted on by the audience and will receive a 30-minute phone consultation from Eckstut and Sterry (a $150 value).

KidFest @ MFOB includes author talks, signings, and fun activities all day for children up to 12 years old. Additionally, concessions will be available in the KidFest outdoor area outside the Presbyterian Church Parish House at 65 South Street.

Please note, the festival is not held on the Morristown Green. There are several public parking garages within walking distance of the Festival center. This is a casual event.

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

orris County Sheriff James M. Gannon has selected Kelley Zienowicz as the person to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the future.

Kelley Zienowicz, a graduate of the elite FBI National Academy, will be promoted to the rank of Chief Morris County Sheriff’s Officer, the highest-level Officer position in the Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement.

Chief Zienowicz’s promotion will formally take place on Sept. 3, 2019, during a swearing-in ceremony, making her the highest-ranking woman in the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and the sole female chief in Morris County.

Chief Zienowicz grew up in Chester and attended Villa Walsh Academy. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Boston College in 1999, and a master of arts degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College in New York City in 2003.

with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in 1999 as a civilian clerk-typist assigned to the Internal Affairs Section. Within a year, she was hired as a Sheriff’s Investigator and in 2001, she attended and completed training at the Morris County Police Academy.

Safely Use GPS Systems While Driving

t wasn’t too long ago that drivers pulled into filling stations and rest stops to pick up maps to help them find their way. But nowadays global positioning systems have rendered paper maps and atlases somewhat obsolete. GPS systems are now so advanced that many even help drivers avoid traffic and/or toll roads.

Navigation systems can be used from smartphones or technology built into cars.

GPS systems are convenient and often very accurate. But drivers run the risk of accident anytime their attention is diverted from the road — even during momentary glances at GPS devices. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving is dangerous and claimed 3,166 lives in 2017 alone. The Ontario Provincial Police say distracted driving continues to be the No. 1 cause of accidents in the province, causing more fatal accidents than any other factor.

How can drivers safely use navigation systems while operating a vehicle? The following tips can help.

• Set the address destination and plot the course while the vehicle is parked. GPS should not be tinkered with while driving. If new directions are needed, or if you need a look ahead at the route, pull over to do so

safely.

• Engage vocal guidance. Allow the navigation system to speak directions to you so you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible.

• Familiarize yourself with the route prior to your trip. GPS systems are not infallible, so you should have a basic understanding of where you are going even if you plan to use GPS. This way you can anticipate turns or highway exits before the alerts and stay attuned to the traffic ahead. Navigation systems may sometimes direct drivers down the wrong side of one-way streets, so common sense should always prevail.

• Know how to operate the device before driving. Learning the tools and features of the device while the car is in motion is a recipe for an accident. Instead, learn how to use it before hitting the road so you can engage the screen or navigation system as minimally as possible while on the move.

• Enlist the help of a co-pilot. Ask a passenger to take charge and help with directions so you can keep your eyes on the road.

GPS navigation systems come in handy, but they should always be used with safety in mind.

In August 2001, she was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section – now called Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) – and spent 11 years in the Unit, assisting in multiple criminal investigations throughout Morris County.

She was called as a witness for the prosecution in several high-profile criminal cases in Superior Court between 2003 and 2014.

She was qualified as an expert fingerprint witness in the sexual assault trial and retrial of Andrew Pena, and testified about evidence in the murder trials of Jose Feliciano, convicted of murdering the Rev. Edward Hinds in Chatham in 2009; Anthony Novellino, convicted of killing his former wife, Judith, in Denville; and Carlos Rojas, found guilty of bludgeoning Esteban Hernandez Vazquez and leaving his body in the trunk of a car abandoned in Lincoln Park.

Chief Zienowicz was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in April 2012 and assigned to the Legal Services Division as the Executions and Foreclosure Section Supervisor.

That promotion was followed on March 1, 2016, by another advancement to the rank of Detective Lieutenant.

She was assigned the post of Division Commander in the Administrative Division,

overseeing Internal Affairs and the Special Operations Section. She then was transferred to the Protective Services Division in September 2016, where she oversaw the courthouse complex and operations and security at the Dover Probation Office.

One of her most profound pleasures was her nomination to attend the 273rd Session of the prestigious FBI National Academy, a 10-week course of study in Quantico, Virginia, in the summer of 2018. Sheriff Gannon, who backed the nomination, is an FBI National Academy Graduate, as well.

The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement managers who are nominated by their agency heads because of their demonstrated leadership abilities. The program provides coursework on intelligence theory, terrorism, terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, communication and forensic science to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies.

Upon returning from the FBI National Academy, Chief Zienowicz in September 2018 was transferred to the Special Services Division, overseeing CSI, Evidence Section, and the Bomb Unit.

She has received the Sheriff’s Achievement Award, Exceptional Duty Award, Unit Citation Medal, Professional Service Medal, Educational Achievement Medal-Masters Degree, Morris County Detective’s Association Distinguished Achievement Unit Award, and the NJ Women in Law Enforcement Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award, which is awarded to women who achieve a law enforcement rank of lieutenant or higher.

Chief Zienowicz is a three-time Police Unity Tour rider and participates annually in the Special Olympics Torch Run.
