Holden n its 34th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, recently announced Abby Loveys, a Randolph High School senior, as its 2018-19 Gatorade New Jersey Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Loveys is the first Gatorade New Jersey Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Randolph High School.

“I felt humbled and honored because there are so many good runners in Randolph High School,” said Loveys. “I started running in third grade and I just grew to love it. The program and the coaches were just great,” said Loveys.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Loveys as New Jersey’s best high school girls’ cross-country runner. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in February, Loveys joins an elite alumni association of past state award winners in 12 sports.

Morris County Exhibit Highlights 50 Years of Fab Fashion

People’s attire, whether it’s the flapper dresses of the 1920s, mini skirts of the 1960s or grungy flannels of the 1990s, say a lot about shifts in the political, economic and social climate.

At the Morris County Historical Society, visitors have the opportunity to view history, through the lens of clothing style.

Through June 2019, the society will present “Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms,” an exhibit that includes over 125 pieces from throughout the 20th century.

“People really relate to clothes. It is the single most unique characteristic of humanity and something everyone can relate to,” Executive Director Amy Curry said.

“They draw people into history in a way that few other things can. And, that allows us to open discussions to deeper cultural and historical topics, so it’s a gateway to history.”

“Coco” Chanel to the trend-setting bell bottoms of Sonny and Cher, the exhibit explores more than five decades of history through an exhibit featuring nearly 125 pieces from the society’s textile collection.

“Nearly 90 percent of what’s on display originated from New Jersey, about 84 percent from Morris County specifically. That was really important for us to show our visitors, most of whom are from New Jersey,” Curry said. “Fashion trends can be more global, but this exhibit is really about New Jersey’s expression of the interconnected relationship of fashion and history.”

“Iconic Culture” also highlights cultural milestones in local, state and national history that coincided with the Roaring 20s, Great Depression, World War II, Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam Era. Visitors are also invited to share their own recollections about significant historical events, such as the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. or the success of the Apollo Mission.

Docent led tours, which take about an

hour, are available or visitors can explore on their own.

The exhibit – which is the largest ever presented by the society – has been “very well received,” Curry said.

It was really gratifying to see it all come together for her.”

“Cross country came to me more naturally,” said Loveys. “I guess as I grew, I became more serious. I like to get involved in things outside of running.

I was in soccer and lacrosse when I was younger. They had that same endurance factor as cross-country running. I think the longer I go the better I am.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the

50 states that sanction high school football, girls’ volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

Loveys is also a winner academically. She has maintained a weighted 4.22 GPA in the classroom. She explained,’ there are other regular courses and then there are advanced placement courses a level up from honors classes.

The weighted factor is what you are doing in the honors courses and advanced placement work.”

Loveys will attend Princeton University this fall, where she will compete in cross country and track and field.

In recent years, many museums across the country have found success with similar exhibits. A look at the relationship between fashion and the Catholic Church drew record crowds to New York’s Metro-

politan Museum of Art in 2018, making it the most attended exhibition in the museum’s history.

Iconic Culture will run through June 16 at Acorn Hall (68 Lafayette Avenue, Morristown). The museum is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for students.

Children age 12 and under, as well as members, are admitted for free.

Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to make reservations.

Eleventh Hour Rescue Provides Dogs and Cats Another Chance at Life

By Steve Sears leventh Hour Rescue is an all-volunteer dog and cat rescue that saves them from death row.

Linda Schiller is President and Founder, who says “If we can only emulate them (dogs) we would be better as humans.”

Schiller was doing rescue individually prior to founding Eleventh Hour Rescue, the latter now her passion. “I started the incorporation process to become a not-for-profit in 2004, which we finally became in 2005.”

A quick background. Schiller had a friend who ran a business that grew quickly. He

was minus corporate experience and he asked Schiller to aid him in growing his business properly. When she began working in the Elizabeth location, she was shocked to see so many stray animals. “There were packs of dogs running at large, stray cats everywhere,” she recalls. “I became the crazy lady in the neighborhood who would go out, call for the dogs, throw food down and feed them.” When either a cat or dog trusted her, she would pick them up and try and find them a home. “In the beginning it was just me, but as time went on, people saw what I was doing and they liked what I was doing, and I

started to get volunteers and fosters.”

Eleventh Hour Rescue... continued from page 6 these dogs were going to be gassed at this shelter in Georgia. I don’t know why I opened up the email; I didn’t know a soul in Georgia. I think I was shocked that we still gas (euthanize) in this country.

When I opened up the email, they had pictures, and it was one beautiful dog after another and, having worked with strays on streets, these dogs were stellar, gorgeous.”

Schiller’s wheels started turning: she wanted those dogs here in New Jersey, where their lives would be saved, and they be placed in nice homes. She asked her boss for three-days’ vacation time which he granted, and she took, and spent, at her office desk. She was able to save a number of them, the balance of the dogs that hadn’t yet been adopted or reclaimed. She had fosters for all the dogs except for three, and when her boss eyed the remaining trio via the PC, he offered to foster them for a few weeks.

On Wednesday morning, she called the shelter and asked how many dogs were left. He told her the number and Schiller said, “I’ll take them all. And those were the words that changed my life and the lives of the dogs.”

It’s a story she has relived many times in her mind. “I have told this story a hundred times and every time I am close to tears when I think about it. How can continued on page 8

Eleventh Hour Rescue is located in Randolph. “Since our inception, we have successfully rehomed over 35,000 animals.

We’ve helped shelters primarily in inner cities, but we work wherever there’s a need. We also have rescue partners that were working with shelters that have a 97% kill rate, and only 3% of the animals were getting out alive every year.

Since we’ve been partnered together, they’ve been able to change those statistics drastically. Now more than 50% are getting out; we’re making headway.” Eleventh Hour Res-

cue is also approached by folks whose home is in foreclosure and they can’t keep their pets, folks who are ill that can’t care for their dogs. “We’re not just helping animals, we’re helping people.”

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Saturday, May 4. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam.

Father Tarantino suggested that some of the Scouts could participate in the mass.”

Attendance was over 30 scouts and leaders showing up. “The turnout was great,” said Dunne. “This year we had three of the five Scout Troops and three of four Cub Packs represented at mass. (The other two Troops and one Pack are sponsored by St. Matthew’s, so they held their own Scout Sunday mass.) Also, this year was the first Scout Sunday that included boys and girls (Brownies) representing Scouting BSA. “We’re going to try and improve those numbers for next year,” said Dunne, a former Eagle Scout, who has been active in scouting for over eight years.

“I started out in the Cub Scouts as my son’s Den leader.’’ This past year, Dunne moved up from assistant scout leader to Scout Master.

Dunne has a vision for next year. “I’d like to have some of the Scouts earn their respective religious awards which could be presented to them by Father Tarantino in front of the congregation.”

There was an added perk to this Scout Sunday. “I was told that the best part of going to Scout Sunday this year was the pancake breakfast that the Resurrection Parish Social Committee ran. That came from an 11-year old,” said Dunne.

Dunne is in scouting because he found out how beneficial the program was for him growing up. “I learned to become a better leader and become responsible for what I did in my outside life, and I want to share the things I’ve learned with the new scouts.

“I get satisfaction out of knowing the boys I see coming in at fifth grade and making their way up, some through Eagle Scout and seeing the growth they have gone through into being a young man and learning the activities that scouting provides along with the program heavy with duty to God, I find that important, too.”

Morris County Girl Attends President Trump’s State of the Union Address

By Steve Sears n October 2018, 10-year-old Grace Eline was declared cancer-free after completing treatment for a rare germ cell brain tumor.

“Fantastic,” says her mom, Aubrey Reichard-Eline, when asked about Grace’s current condition. “She is happy to be out of treatment and focused on normal 4th grader things. We still have a lot of follow up with various doctors which she would rather not participate in, but she knows this is part of life now and in order to stay healthy we must be diligent in follow up for the rest of her life.”

Yes, Grace is thankfully in great health, and that’s a super reason to be elated – perhaps the best.

However, a close second might just be an invitation to Washington, D.C. from the President of the United States.

About two weeks prior to the original State of the Union address (January 31) , the Eline’s learned of an invite by President Donald Trump, but had no idea it

was to attend the Address. Learning more specifics as the date approached, the family kept details hush-hush.

“We (Grace and I) went down on Sunday,” explains Aubrey. “We had press pictures at the White House Monday morning. The weather was beautiful, and we spent the rest of the day touring D.C. as Grace had never been there before.” On Monday night, when the press release went out regarding the State of the Union guests, the Eline’s began telling people to watch it.

“VERY excited! I couldn’t believe it at first!” says Grace when asked how she felt when she learned of the invitation.

Grace and her mom had an interview Tuesday morning at their hotel, and then around noon were whisked to the White House. There they met the other guests and their families, and then stepped into the Oval Office to meet and chat with President Trump. “From there we toured the White House, met the Vice President and Mrs. Pence, had dinner, and then met

Melania Trump (“They were genuine and very nice,” says Aubrey.)” They were fantastic with Grace.”

“They were very nice,” adds Grace.

“The President said he knew all about my story and how brave I am. He was happy I came to see him. The Vice-President knew my story and said he was very happy to continued on page 15

The First Lady confirmed that Grace would sit with her that evening. “It was the best part. I have always looked up to her, so getting to meet her and then sit with her was perfect for me. Melania kept making sure I was okay the entire night which was very nice. I felt very special.”

Aubrey adds, “Grace was so very excited. The entire day had been a dream, and this was the icing on the cake for her! From there, those traveling to the Capital went to the First Lady’s motorcade and departed for the Capital. It was surreal. At the Capital we reviewed where Grace would be. Grace and I were then escorted to Melania’s chambers at the Capital where we sat with her and Mrs. Pence before being officially seated for the speech.”

Grace was then escorted to her seat. “We had an alignment moment - making sure she was good- and I assure you she was. She said, ‘Mom I’ve got this.’ We kissed, and she took her place. Melania was escorted in and I went back to her chambers to watch with other guests and staff. I had a great spot to watch - including chocolate, comfy seats and tissues as it was amazing and emotional.”

When President Trump addressed Grace from the podium, she stood up to much applause. “Very excited!!! It was amazing!!! I almost couldn’t believe it was actually happening,” Grace recalls.

“Afterwards, we were right there when she came out of the speech. Senators and Representatives kept coming up to her to congratulate her and talk to her as we were making

our way back to the motorcade back to the White House.” “(It was) nothing short of AMAZING.” Grace celebrated her 10th birthday on December 16 in a very special way. She hosted a Dance-a-thon to benefit children battling cancer. The local community, local businesses and supportive friends helped the event come together.

“Throughout treatment, when we would have a moment of not feeling so good or we were on our way to treatment or just because we made it another day,” says Aubrey, “we would put on a sassy playlist and dance around. When it came time to plan her 10th birthday – and we have always done her birthdays for charity – we thought ‘Why not dance for this one as there was so much to celebrate and raise even more for a good cause?’

So, the Dance-a-thon idea was born as a way for everyone to have some fun, raise awareness and raise money for a beautiful charity that helped us so much - The Valerie Fund.”

As for the Washington D.C. trip, Aubrey summed up the entire day. “We had a very good experience. The staff took great care of us. Everyone we met was very genuine and caring in our conversations. The other guests were also inspirational to be with for that day. The overall experience was very uplifting, and we were truly honored to be a part of it. We are extremely fortunate that Grace took a not so good situation and turned it into a positive for so many. We are so happy that Grace was chosen to represent this cause and to be honored the way she was for the country and the world to see that even in the darkness there can be great light.”

Center Grove School Hosts TREP$ Marketplace

ixty Center Grove fifth grade students learned to become entrepreneurs through the school’s TREP$ program.

The students met after school once a week for several weeks, coming up with entrepreneurial concepts, then

presenting them to teachers, creating everything from bath bombs to Randolph magnets and holiday ornaments to snow globes and bookmarks with bling. The students then sold their creations at the TREP$ Marketplace on February 21.

Aydrian Parsons purchased a photo holder from brother Matthew and friend Adam Malik who sold their photo holders at the Center Grove TREP$ Marketplace on February 21.

Hundreds of parents, staff and students came to check out the variety of items created and sold by students at different tables around the school’s gymnasium. Students

continued from page 19 whole experience “taught me to use my time wisely”. Juliana and friend Katie Uppal created Cutie Cans. They decorated recycled cans turning them into animals and characters which they sold at the Marketplace.

Ilya Andriano is very artistic and used felt and glue and his talent to create adorable finger puppets.

Marcus Mosquera said he wanted to create something natural, so he used recycled corks to create adorable animals including dogs, cats and mice which were very well received at the marketplace.

Gianna Crisci and Madison Elliott said they wanted to “show their love and support for Randolph” and created Randolph magnets and hanging ornaments.

“The 5th grade TREPS

Marketplace was a great success,” said fifth grade teacher Tiffani Armstrong. “Students participated in workshops that focused on product development, pricing, marketing, and selling their product. All students sold out of their product and enjoyed the experience of being an enTREPreneur.”

A similar program took place at Fernbrook School in December.

TREP$ founder Pamela de Waal also surprised Center Grove by coming out to visit the event. “Congratulations on your wonderfully successful TREP$ Marketplace!” she said.

CCM Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Titan Weekend Register Now for the Titan Trot 5 K

To commemorate 50 years of serving the Morris County community, CCM will be hosting a Titan Weekend, a fun-filled extravaganza from May 3 through May 5, with something for everyone. The weekend celebration will include a Titan Ball, CCM’s mascot Titus the Titan’s Birthday and Titan Trot 5K. Registration is now open for the Titan Trot 5K, which will take place Sun., May 5, on the CCM Randolph campus, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph. USAFT certified, the Titan Trot 5K consists both of a run and walk. Participants can register online at ccm.edu/titan-trot/ with a registration fee of $25. The day of the 5K, registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and the race and walk start at 9:00 a.m.

On Friday, May 3, the CCM Foundation will hold a Titan Ball, a Greek mythology inspired gala at the Hanover Marriott, in Whippany, complete with Adonis and Aphrodite appetizers and elixirs, and ‘Me-
