Randolph Cub Scouts Collect For Food Pantry
O
By Henry M. Holden n Feb. 11, Cub Scout Pack 50, in Fernbrook, collected more than 1,000 food items that were then donated to the Bethlehem Church Food Pantry. The pantry serves Randolph and the surrounding communities, regardless of religious affiliation. “Pack 50 meets once a month and does community service projects throughout the year,” says Edward J Wysmierski, Jr., the pack photographer, and public relations person. “The food drive is an annual event that occurs during the week of our Blue and Gold Dinner. This special event commemorates the founding of the Cub Scouts of Ameri-

continued from front page Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts but continue their participation in this food drive.” The scouts get a service award for taking part, and a patch that they can sew on their uniform shirts. The Cub Scouts will collect any nonperishable food items. “We have a coordinator for the food drive, and she assigns each Den a particular section of the Fernbrook neighborhood,” he explains. “Each Den will break down into different streets. Each scout gets two streets, maybe a little more depending on how long the street. A parent goes with each scout. We don’t allow any scouts to ring door bells or do this by himself. “The cub scouts put fliers inside the bags listing which food items they
are looking for, and a flyer that tells them a something about the Cub Scouts,” he says. “The scouts will hang the bags on the door knob, or on the mailbox flag. We return the following week to collect the bags left by the front door, hopefully with food in them. “Some of the Cub Scouts goals are to promote good citizenship, character development, and personal fitness,” says Wysmierski. “And while there are seven methods of cub scouting, one of them is to serve the neighborhood and community. This food drive certainly fits into that category. “One thing we also do is set the cub scout’s eyes in preparation for the Boy Scouts. We are always looking for boys to join scouting.” In the past, the Cub
Scouts has only been available to kids in the first grade through the fifth grade. “My wife is taking part in a pilot program to open Cub Scouts to kindergarten so that’s something new for us this year,” says Wysmierski. “If the boy is in kindergarten he is eligible to join Cub Scouts, but we don’t take then earlier than kindergarten.” Cub Scout Pack 50 is part of the Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America, and is a chapter of the National Cub Scouts. Pack 50 has been a part of the in Fernbrook Elementary School since 1983. For more information on joining the Cub Scouts, contact thewysenheimers@ gmail.com or https://cubscouts.org/.

RHS Boys’ Basketball Team’s Donation Brightens Lives At Sunrise The residents of Sunrise loved the products and welcomed the team back “whenever they want.” Sunrise is a home of 60 residents, with 40 in Memory Care, where residents have some form of Alzheimer ’s disease which affects every aspect of life: memory, speech, eating, and dressing. While aides care for these residents, family and friends play a critical role in providing support and daily essentials; so the “Welcome Kits” were very much appreciated. Sunrise volunteer coordinator, Leigh Gardner stated, “The residents love seeing the kids! Sunrise sees the tremendous value of intergenerational programs. We welcome working with local schools and community groups.” Lavender added, “It’s a great opportunity to show how
N
By Maryanne ChristianoMistretta ick Mantone, a freshman on the Randolph Boys Basketball Team, who had a grandfather living at Sunrise Assisted Living, Randolph, decided he wanted to get involved and donate toiletries that Sunrise residents could use. When the basketball season started in February, teams began to collect by leaving big boxes outside of the gym. Coach Nick Lavender said that more than 1,200 toiletries, such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant, were collected. “Every practice-day or game-day, some of the parents would drop off items,” said Lavender. “We packaged the items in a ‘Welcome Bag’ and dropped them off.”
in Paterson, La Vida Day Care. “They take a bus down and dress up as Santa, with a bunch of clothes,” Lavender said. “We’ve been doing this the past three years; putting out boxes by the gym and asking kids and families to donate clothes – from young kids to adult clothes. It’s a nice opportunity, led by Coach Pat Dunnigan.” In addition to the community work, the teams’ scores aren’t too shabby either! Varsity went to the state semi-finals for the second time in school history, with 20 wins for the season. JV Team won the Morris County Tournament two years in a row. And the freshman team had 14 game wins and six losses. “Our program is very successful; shows the kind of character and hard-working players we have,” said Lavender.
well-rounded the players are. They came to us with this idea. They had a good time collecting and dropping off the items. It shows how good a group of high school guys are. Our athletic director, Jeff Dilillo, and head coach, Matt Tighe – they supported us the whole way.” Of the teams that collected the 1,200 items, it was the freshman team who collected the most– 1,048 toiletries. JV collected 77 toiletries; and varsity collected 83 toiletries. The freshman team had a pizza party in school, with 45 kids and their families, during school hours, to celebrate. Lavender said the team plans to do this again, as well as continuing the other opportunities. For example, the last few years, around Christmas time, Randolph High School does a coat drive at a homeless shelter

Community Invited To Sample Local Restaurants At First Annual Taste Of Randolph
C
By Henry M. Holden alling all foodies! No matter what pleases the pallet, the First Annual Taste of Randolph is the festival to attend. This is the singular opportunity to get a taste of some local restaurants without a reservation. On April 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Rotary Club of Randolph will sponsor the First Annual Taste of Randolph. “The proceeds will support our charitable projects,” says Kathy Kremins, the club’s treasurer. “Our Rotary District 7470 has a district wide focus of ending hunger, which we will support through our local food panties. Another focus is our ‘Welcome home’ project to assist homeless vets returning to civilian life. Other projects are more
global in nature: the eradication of Polio and clean drinking water, are some examples. But this Taste of Randolph is strictly focused on our town.” Kremins explains, “Rotary members look for opportunities to improve our communities today and invest in the next generation for tomorrow. We have been a member of the local Randolph community for quite some time and we know that we have a lot of terrific restaurants in this town. We have around 30 restaurants in Randolph and the participating restaurants have signage advertising this event, so, we’re hoping to get all of them to attend, and get a large turnout from the residents. “We’ve seen other towns do these events and we’ve been invited to them, to ex-
perience the different types of events that they hold. After seeing such positive results elsewhere, we finally decided to take this under our wing and provide something new to our community. We want to let others get to know and taste our fine restaurants and what our community is really all about.” Kremins says “No one has to travel to the city to experience fancy dining, when they can visit some fine restaurants in their own backyard. We have some four and five star restaurants here in Randolph listed in Yelp and Trip Advisor.” The restaurants are invited to take part, and it’s at their own expense. The event will take place in the banquet hall on the upper level of the Mount Freedom Fire Company #3
in Randolph. For beer, wine and spirit tastings, Kremins says “We’ll be upstairs in the catering hall, and along the bar area where all the tastings of the liquors will take place. It will be comfortable and informal, with a local DJ providing background
music. There will be a craft beer tastings, wine tastings, and spirits to taste. There will be a variety of wines and beverages and HighGrade Beverage distributor of Randolph in making the selections.” Tickets are $40 per person in advance, and $50 on
the day of the event. It’s for adults only, and because of the liquor license involved, all must be over 21. Tickets can be purchased at John Herod Jewelers, Randolph; the Pizza Palace, Randolph, and the law offices of Andrew T. Shaw, Randolph.

Two Students Lead Fernbrook For Day
s part of the Fernbrook FRIES program, a fun celebration encouraging reading, two Fernbrook students won a raffle to become the school’s principal and vice principal for a day. Fifth grader Edward Wysmierski was the principal for a day and second grader Madelyn Fogel vice principal for a day on March 7. Edward, who sat with Principal Dr. Michelle Telischak at her desk, said he learned “that it is hard to be principal.” Edward and Madelyn visited classrooms, monitored the weather to determine if the school should have indoor or outdoor recess and visited the kindergarten museum. “It is so much fun to be the school vice principal,” Madelyn said as she worked with Fernbrook Vice Principal Kristin Mueller. “We get to visit classrooms and teachers and students and see what they are learning.” Madelyn said she and Mrs. Mueller reviewed emails and moved recess indoors because of the rain. Edward said he was excited to help with the whole school meeting later in the day. Fernbrook Principal Dr. Michelle Telischak with Fernbrook fifth grader Edward Wysmierski in her office.

wo Randolph Middle School musicians have been selected as members of the New Jersey All-State Intermediate Orchestra. Seventh-grader Shoshana Zeiger and eighth-grader Priscilla Peters will play the violin and represent Randolph in the prestigious group at its concert May 13 at 3 p.m. at Summit High School. “These wonderful musicians made Randolph Middle School proud,” said Hsiao-yu Lin Griggs,
the school’s orchestra director. Both students are members of the Con Brio Select Orchestra, an audition-based ensemble open to Randolph Middle School orchestra students in sixth grade through eighth grade. Con Brio musicians perform at a higher level of music literature compared to all grade level orchestras. The group was also invited to perform in the 2017 NAFME Eastern Conference in Atlantic
City. This is the second year that Peters has been selected for the group. “You get inspired to play music with people who love music as much as you do,” she said. Zeiger said she is excited to play with so many talented musicians. She also plays with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Youth Academy and Peters plays with the New Jersey Youth Symphony.

Adults Experience RHS As Students For A Day
everal Randolph High School principals and supervisors spent a full day shadowing students and took tests, participated in physical education classes, and even dressed like students. Randolph High School Principal Debbie Iosso spent a day with Nick Rampone, an RHS junior. Iosso played goalie in a game of floor hockey, took a math test and learned how to make a toy top in wood shop on March 7. “I really wanted to see a school day from a student’s view,” she said. “I want to encourage teachers to do this as well.” “Collectively we were able to identify some areas of a student day that we can certainly pay more attention
to,” she said. “It is my plan to convince at least one or two teachers from each department to engage in this activity. I believe that once they really see what it’s like to sit in five or six academic classes with PE in the mix, they will be much more sensitive to what it might be like to navigate being a student. I’m positive the resulting discussions will produce some viable ideas to improve the life of students at RHS. Stay tuned!” The principal said she personally found a day “as a student” “exhausting” and noted having seven minutes after physical education “to freshen up does not make for a great hair day.” Iosso also forgot her lunch pin, learned how to use a sanding machine in

wood shop and worked on a group project in English. World Language Supervisor Paula Paredes-Corbel, Director of
RHS Vice Principal Matt Agrati said he enjoyed shadowing a student. “None of the teachers knew that I was coming into their class
and it was amazing to see the lessons and opportunities our staff create for our students,” he said. “It was certainly something that I
would like all of our teachers to experience in the near future to truly get a flavor of what RHS is like for our students.”

One-pot Meal For A Crowd
arm, hearty meals, including stews, casseroles, soups, and chilis, make for great comfort foods when temperatures drop. Another advantage to these types of meals is they can easily be expanded to serve extended family. Also, when prepared using a slow cooker, these meals can be easily transported to a friends’ potluck or relative’s home. Beloved for their turnit-on-and-forget-it convenience, slow cookers allow cooks to start meals in the morning and then return home at night and have dinner ready and waiting. Busy working families may
find that the convenience of slow cookers is unparalleled. This recipe for “Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli” from “Taste of Home Casseroles, Slow Cooker & Soups” (Taste of Home Books) is ideal for a cool fall or winter evening. It’s a delicious meal to come home to after a busy day and also a great way to make use of leftover ham from a previous meal, such as a family gathering during the holiday season. Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli Serves 6 to 8 3 cups cubed fully cooked ham 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed
1 can (103⁄4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1 jar (8 ounces) cheese sauce 1 can (8 ounces) sliced water chestnuts, drained 11⁄4 cups uncooked instant rice 1 cup milk 1 celery rib, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1⁄8 to 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper 1⁄2 teaspoon paprika In a 3-quart slow cooker, combine all of the ingredients except the paprika. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours, or until the rice is tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

hen it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay,
such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero
D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal. For more tips and wine selections, visit winefix. com New York-Style Honey Cheesecake Recipe courtesy of the National Honey Board 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese 3/4 cup honey 1/4 cup flour 5eggs 1/3 cup heavy cream

Randolph Kiwanis Tricky Tray Raises Thousands For Morristown NICU
he Kiwanis Club of Randolph Township hosted a tricky tray recently in honor of Robert “RJ” Nelson III, during one of its signature events, the Morristown CraftMarket, and raised $3,000 for the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit at Morristown Medical Center. By hosting the tricky tray, the Randolph Kiwanis put the spotlight on premature birth, which is a national health crisis. Proceeds from the tricky tray benefitted the NICU,
“Sam’s NICU,” which helps premature babies and their families. RJ was born 13 1/2 weeks premature and fought hard, living only 82 days. Claudia Nelson, RJ’s mother, spearheaded the
tricky tray. She, along with other supporters of Sam’s NICU community, collected the donations, ran the booth and distributed the prizes. This year, the Morristown CraftMarket is set for
