Taggert, who plans to attend Hofstra University in the fall to study film/television, created a documentary titled "Through One Lens" about how he overcame having sight in one eye to become a successful filmmaker and athlete. He also created a music video titled "Stop the Bullying," which was used in RHS Teacher Lisa Holloway's anti-bullying assembly this spring. Taggert is also president of the RHS Video Club. "Ryan is an amazing filmmaker who displays a great deal of passion for cinematic arts," said RHS Mass Media Teacher Robert Finning. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Aca-

Martial Arts Demonstration Kicks American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Event Up A Notch

n June 4, two of the American Budo Kai’s martial arts schools performed a martial arts demonstration for the American Cancer Society of Central Morris County’s Relay for Life event at County College of Morris in Randolph. The demonstration, which included various demonstrations of technique, kata, weapons, proper falling, and much more was performed by over 30 students from the Association’s dojos in Randolph and Parsippany, and was co-run by Randolph Martial Arts Academy Head Instructor, Daniel Hopler, and Family Martial Arts Center (located in Parsippany, NJ) Head Instructor, Jonathan Sackett. The demonstration was highlighted by several self-defense demonstrations and finished with all of the students breaking boards!

The American Budo Kai schools were also able to participate in the event itself, which includes walking laps around a circular track to raise awareness and money for cancer research, with their team, Martial Arts Madness. Shortly after 9 p.m., there was a special Luminaria ceremony where lighted bags bearing the names of those who’ve been lost to cancer were placed around the track and all teams walked a silent lap in their honor. The American Budo Kai honored the memories of both its founder, Dale Jenkins, and one of its head instructors, James Mendez, and was able to raise over $225. Randolph Martial Arts Academy Head Instructor, Daniel Hopler, said of the event, “Our students did such a great job today, and everyone involved with the American Cancer Society works so hard to raise do-

Be Found Faster With New Reflective Address Markers

By Cheryl Conway esidents in Randolph can purchase new reflective house number signs to not only help emergency personnel locate a house but to also support their local fire department. Available since last year, the Randolph Fire Department started to advertise in full force just this year to encourage all homeowners to order one. The reflective address marker is available through all four fire companies and is this year’s departmentwide fundraiser. All proceeds go toward costs allocated by the volunteer fire department such as fire gear and training required by the fire fighters. The purpose of the address marker sales, however, is not to raise funds. “We’re not doing it for the fundraising,” says Captain Justin Herold of Randolph Fire Dept. Co. #4 in Ironia. “We are doing it to help ourselves, police and EMS.” Herold says, “some officers and some experienced guys, we do have trouble finding addresses.” When there is an emer-

gency, and time is of the essence, “it’s more of us trying to find addresses.” Randolph “is so spread out; a lot of houses set off the road; some don’t label their houses that well. In the night, in the rain, in the snowsometimes we are looking for houses and it’s terrible to find them.” With every new sign sold, “a peace of mind comes to know we will find you,” says Herold. “Every second counts when we are trying to find your house. When police or EMS are trying to find your house, every bit helps. The reflective address markers are blue in color, six inches by 18 inches long, made out of heavy duty aluminum. They are highly visible day or night, made out of a reflective material with pre-drilled holes on both sides. They are also fade resistant and have been noted to last for years. Each sign is $20 and can be ordered through the Randolph Fire Dept. Fundraising Committee in Randolph and through the municipal building. Each sign is custom made with the house

number that can be posted on a mailbox, tree or sign post. The all-volunteer fire department makes the signs. “We’re donating our time to put the signs together,” says Herold. Volunteer firefighters come out one night a week to put the vinyl reflective numbers on each ad-

dress marker. Email rtfd.fundraising@gmail.com to order one or stop by any of the four fire companies on Monday night. The sale is ongoing. The goal is to get every homeowner to buy one.

Parks And Recreation Plans Cover Multiple Improvements To Come

By Brianna Kudisch andolph community members can expect various positive changes to the parks and recreational areas, thanks to the completion of a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The new plan not only evaluates current needs, but also lays the groundwork for the implementation of future proposals. The updated plan establishes projects to be completed around the local community, with four groupings in regards to timeline. The first group outlines the next zero to two years, the second group outlines three to five years, the third group outlines six to ten years, and the fourth group outlines the plans for the future, be-

yond ten years. “As Randolph Township has continued to evolve in both demographics and population, it became apparent that an updated Parks and Recreation Master Plan was necessary to both assess the current needs as well as to establish a plan for parks and recreation investments for the next 10-15 years,”

The Steering Committee and Brandstetter Carroll have worked together to form a report over 125 pages, detailing information on facilities and programs, specific plans, an analysis of what is needed and what is recommended, and a synopsis of public opinion, gathered from online surcontinued on page 8

said Russ Newman, director of Randolph Parks and Recreation. The last completed Parks and Recreation Master Plan was put together in 1998; it led to the development of Freedom Park as well as multiple improvements made on existing facilities, parks, and trails, including the renovation of the Community Center.

Parks And Recreation Plans...

continued from page 6 veys, websites, random mailed surveys, meetings, and public workshops. Planned recommendations for the parks and recreational areas will cost about $12.5 million dollars, spread through the 10-15 years in which the project’s goals expect to be achieved. No taxes will be raised in the completion of the projects, as funding will come from the Open Space and Recreation Development Trust Fund. The fund is supported by a specifically allocated local tax already in place. One recommended action outlined in the plan is the development of a park on the site on Calais Road that spans 90 acres; the park would include elements not currently available at existing Randolph parks. “These [elements] include an outdoor stage/bandshell, a community garden, outdoor fitness equipment, a lighted, paved loop trail, picnic pavilions, a naturethemed playground, and other amenities such as pickle ball and bocce courts, as well as a connecting trail to Heistein

Park,” said Newman. Additionally, there are plans to continue improving and advancing the existing trail network, and to develop a Trails Master Plan. Brundage and Heistein Parks would also receive necessary changes through field lighting upgrades and improved restroom facilities and picnic shelters. Freedom Park will also receive changes through the planned replacement and expansion of its artificial turf field, improved restroom facilities and picnic shelters. More updates include improved security, ADA access, existing field and building maintenance in general, and specific improvements to the Brundage Park Playhouse and Artworks Studios. The Township Council held a public hearing for the plan on May 5, with following discussions in the following months, and it is scheduled to move to accept the plan by resolution at their meeting on July 28.

Students Conduct Field Study On Pollution ters Association in order to conduct a field study to evaluate the stream for pollution, said ESL Teacher Michelle Land. The students observed the environment, took measurements, and then found samples of macro-invertebrates in the stream. After recording all of the data, they were able to evaluate the stream based on their

findings. This year, the water quality was rated as fair to good. This was due to the low number of macro-invertebrates found that are sensitive to pollution, an indication that there may be some pollutants in the streams. This is something the classes will continue to monitor as it is important for our local environment, Land said.

Fresh Cutz Barber Shop

wner John Lloyd started cutting hair when he was 14 years old, cutting my brother and friends hairs. As I got my first job in a shop in Dover in 2003 thru 2011, I learned alot from a great barber and I was mentored by the owner himself. In 2011 as I took a new job at DPW, I continued cutting hair after work. I had setup shop in my garage. I couldn't just put my scissors down, cutting hair was my passion indeed. Eventually in 2014, I went back to Dover full time and complete the Robert Fiance Academy in North Plainfield and graduated in 2015. My dream was to open a Barber Shop in my hometown of Roxbury. It came true on June 24th, 2015. It's been great and I celebrated my first year in business. I want to thank you, my family that helped to open up my shop, and a great team of barbers like Jack Hudspith, 2014 graduate from Cutting Edge Academy of Succasunna, and Willy Gonzales, a passionate barber, who has over 13 years of experience. He also started cutting his friends’ hair when he was 15 years old. Come in and experience a great haircut in a place with a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Randolph 5K Rocks With Record Breaking Number Of Participants

record number of 666 runners and walkers registered for the Randolph Rocks 5K held Sat., June 18, with 605 of them finishing the race. The event, organized by the Randolph Education Foundation (REF) was supported by more than 65 businesses and local merchants and raised $27,000 to support the students and the teachers in the Randolph Schools. “We were very impressed with the organization and the sense of community,” said Yuriria Alanis Santoyo, who participated in the race with her family for the first time. “We liked it so much we have promised to run in this race again next year.” Since 2010, the Randolph Education Foundation has organized the annual 5K as an effort to bring the community together to raise funds to support innovative programs that enrich the educational experience of the students in the Randolph Schools. Two programs funded by the REF in past years were showcased on race day: the From the Ground Up Greenhouse project run by the Randolph High School (RHS) Greenhouse Club, and the Robots Got Talent also at RHS. Awards were presented in more than a dozen categories, including top male and female runners, top male and female Randolph residents, and top male and female Randolph teacher or staff members. Millburn Firefighters Share Meals At Table Painted By CCM Students

hen Jeffrey Wanamaker, a firefighter with the Millburn Fire Department Station 2, decided to create a kitchen table for firefighters to share meals around, he had one challenge he needed to resolve – he had to find some artists to paint his design. His answer was to turn to Todd L. W. Doney, professor of visual arts at County College of Morris (CCM), who he knew from his gym. Doney listened to Wanamaker’s ideas and suggested that the project might be a good one for the CCM Art Club. Mauricio Caquimb, of Rockaway, an engineering major at CCM and president of the Art Club, gladly took on the project and enlisted the help of several other students. Also assisting with the project were Federico Cárdenas Valencia of Wharton; Brandon Driesse of Lincoln Park; Dianne Guzman Aragon of Randolph; Emily Larosa of Morris Plains; Julianna Pullara of Budd Lake; and Luke Weaver of Morris Plains. “What was special about this project is

that it involved a lot of lettering, and lettering is the hardest thing to do because you have to make sure everything is straight,” says Doney. “The students who worked on the project did a fantastic job. What was extra special was that they came to campus on their own time during the summer to work on the table. I am really proud of them. They did an outstanding job.” Caquimbo says, “We took the time out of the summer because we didn't want to leave the fire department empty handed. Just the thought of these firefighters gathering around this table after a long day’s work and appreciating it is a very satisfying feeling to me and my club members.” The tabletop features the wording “Millburn Fire Station 2, ‘The house in the hills.’” Today, it now sits in the fire station’s kitchen on a blue fire hydrant base. “It adds to our station pride,” says Wanamaker. “When we’re on duty, we live together, cook together and share meals together. It’s nice to be able to eat at a table now that reflects our pride.”

Mauricio Caquimbo, president of the CCM Art Club, and member Emily Larosa put the finishing touches on a table for the Millburn Fire Department Station 2.

Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces

By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.

“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-

tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. For more information, go to magalettadesigns.com. To arrange for an appointment or contract a project, call 973539-1818.

United Way Of Northern New Jersey Kicks Off School Supplies Drive

nited Way of Northern New Jersey is seeking help from volunteers and donations of new school supplies for its annual United Way Tools for School drive, allowing children to start the new school year with the basic tools needed for success in school. The drive will benefit more than 10,000 elementary and middle school children of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and families in poverty throughout the northern New Jersey region. United Way Tools for School seeks to lessen the strain on already strapped household budgets. Last year, on average, families with children in K-12 in the United States spent $98 on school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks and pencils, according to the National Retail Federation. That does not include electronics, clothing and accessories. “ALICE families that are working hard but can’t keep up with the high cost of living are faced with having to choose between buying school supplies or paying for basic bills, United Way Senior Vice President Kiran Gaudioso said. “Together, we can help ease this financial struggle and give students the basics to start off the school

Roofing

year on the right track. United Way is making it easier to make donations by partnering with YouGiveGoods.com again, which allows donors to make an online purchase of supplies that will be delivered automatically to United Way. Donations can be made by visiting www.UnitedWayNNJ.org/ToolsforSchool. In addition, donations will be accepted throughout the five-county region. The following is a list of local drop-off locations. Morris County: On Thurs., Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., donations can be dropped off at Housing Partnership in Dover. Suburban Essex County: on Mon., Aug. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., donations can be dropped off at the United Way office in Montclair. Warren County: On Tues., Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, donations can be dropped off at Taylor Street School in Washington. Based on the needs expressed by local educators, United Way is collecting the following school supplies: backpacks, lunch boxes, binders, three-ring notebooks, book covers, filler paper, pocket folders, composition and spiral notebooks, index cards, calculators, pencils, pencil cases, pencil

sharpeners, erasers, pens, highlighters, crayons, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, glue, tape, rulers, dry erase markers, and scissors. In addition, school nurses have asked for personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, Band-Aids, and kindergarten and first grade-aged children’s underwear and socks. Gift cards that can be used to purchase items such as shoes and clothing are also appreciated.

Homeless Solutions Earns Four Star Rating

omeless Solutions’ strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating. “Homeless Solutions’ exceptional fourstar rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, president & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our four-star rating. Homeless Solutions continues to be a part of a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its four-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support

Homeless Solutions.” Homeless Solutions has had a four-star Charity Navigator rating for 12 of the past 14 years. “It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely in our work to provide shelter, services, and supportive housing to homeless and low income people,” said Homeless Solutions Chief Development Officer Stephanie Cicale. “Our four-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability.” Homeless Solutions is a private, nonprofit organization that has been helping the homeless and working poor in the Morris County area since 1983. Their staff and programs give people the tools they need to rebuild their lives, and as working people move to independence, Homeless Solutions provides sustainable homes people can afford. Upcoming Family Day Event

esidents of Morris County and surrounding communities are invited to a Family Fun Day and Resource Fair on Sun., July 31, from noon to 4 p.m., at Central Park of Morris County. The feature of this free event – held rain or shine – will be a competitive Wheelchair Softball Game at the park’s Challenger Field from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those attending will have the opportunity to experience firsthand Morris County’s fully accessible ball field and playground, while gathering valuable information presented by vendors about a range of available disability services and resources in the community.
