hree years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A.

Memorial Day History Explains Origins Of National Holiday Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington,

D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns. Local Observances Claim To Be First Local springtime tributes to the Civil War dead already had been held in various places. One of the first occurred in Columbus, Miss., April 25, 1866, when a group of women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the

sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers on those graves, as well. Today, cities in the north and the south claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866. Both Macon and Columbus, Ga., claim the title, as well as Richmond, Va. The village of Boalsburg, Pa., claims it began there two years earlier. A stone in a Carbondale, Ill., cemetery carries the statement that the first Decoration Day ceremony took place there on April 29, 1866. Carbondale was the wartime home of Gen. Logan. Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried. Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in

the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were informal, not community-wide or onetime events. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper ob-

servance at their facilities. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays. Some States Have Confederate Observances continued on page 2

Memorial Day History... continued from front page Many Southern states also have their own days for honoring the Confederate dead. Mississippi celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, and Georgia on April 26. North and South Carolina observe it on May 10, Louisiana on June 3 and Tennessee calls that date Confederate Decoration Day. Texas celebrates Confederate Heroes Day January 19 and Virginia calls the last Monday in May Confederate Memorial Day. Gen. Logan’s order for his posts to decorate graves in 1868 “with the choicest flowers of springtime” urged: “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. ... Let pleasant paths

invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” The crowd attending the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was approximately the same size as those that attend today’s observance, about 5,000 people. Then, as now, small American flags were placed on each grave — a tradition followed at many national cemeteries today. In recent years, the custom has grown in many families to decorate the graves of all departed loved ones. The origins of special services to honor those who

die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War more than 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars: “Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.” To ensure the sacrifices of America’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Re-

membrance. The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the

United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to

remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”

es, you read correctly, there is a silent killer among us almost everyday. It can be with you the very moment your alarm sounds in the morning and can follow you into your car while you’re driving. It can stay with you at your desk while working or even when picking your kids up from school. It can follow you around all day long and can even get into your bed with you at night. If you haven’t already guessed, the silent killer is stress. In fact, stress alone is linked to the six leading causes of death (Heart Disease, Cancer, Lung Disease, Accidents, Cirrhosis of the

Warning.. There is a Silent Killer Among Us

Liver and Suicide). Not only does stress affect your mood, but it actually causes physiological changes in the body. What does that actually mean? Let’s break it down and simplify this complex cascade of events: When confronted with a stressful situation, our bodies react involuntarily. The nervous system responds by releasing different stress hormones like Cortisol and Adrenaline, engaging the body’s “fight or flight” response. In ancient times, this was an advantage for survival when stresses included fleeing from wild animals that could eat you. So, this response was necessary for survival and

could actually save your life. The “fight or flight” response causes your heart to beat faster, your blood pressure to rise, increases the rate of respiration and enhances your senses. Unfortunately, this response still kicks in from stress that we experience everyday that may not be life threatening. Things like traffic, an angry boss or a family fight is much different than getting chased by a hungry bear, but our bodies involuntarily respond in the same way. Constant, repeated stress is detrimental to the body and can result in disease and even death. From an Acupuncture

and Chinese medical perspective, stress causes an imbalance of energy in the body. In a healthy person, energy flows smoothly throughout the body. Healthy people experience different emotions everyday, which is a normal part of life. No one can escape being stressed, worried, angry or sad at certain times, but it is when these emotions are too intense or when they are prolonged over a long period of time that they disrupt the balance of energy within the body and become the cause of disease. This is especially true if the emotions are not expressed and are kept inside for a long peri-

od of time (a big no no!). Signs & symptoms of an overactive response to stress include: Anger, Anxiety, Asthma, Nausea, Depression, Depressed immune system, Digestive disorders, Headaches, Heart disease, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Joint pain, Palpitations, Panic Attacks, Shortness of breath and Weight problems. If you are someone who experiences any of the symptoms above or is simply just stressed out...there is hope! Acupuncture has been helping people to cope with stress for thousands of years. It can help to balance the mental and physical symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, Acupuncture and Chinese medicine aims at treating the root cause of the issue. Best of all, it is a safe, effective and drugfree treatment! Here are some ways to help combat stress on a daily basis: 1.) Manage your stress with Acupuncture! Acupuncture helps to reduce stress hormones like Cortisol, relax muscle tension and helps restore the body’s balance so that your body calms down and even responds better to stress in the future. 2.) Get enough sleep! Try to get at least 8 hours of restful sleep. Our bodies handle stress much better when we are well rested. 3.) Start your day with meditation. You don’t have to be an expert yogi to meditate... but try a simple breathing exercise. Inhale slowly for 10 seconds, pause, then exhale slowly for 10 seconds. Repeat

for 5-10 minutes each day. You can also play calming music to enhance relaxation during your meditation. Meditation calms the nerves, reduces the release of stress hormones in your body and prevents adrenal exhaustion. 4.) Drink your stress away....with Green Tea this is! Green tea reduces cortisol, the hormone that your body releases in response to stress. 5.) Boost your mood with Diet & Exercise! Increasing your intake of leafy green veggies helps your body to stay healthy and deal with stress better. Daily exercise also helps to reduce cortisol levels and increases the levels of the “happy” chemicals in the brain. 6.) Beat Stress With Positive Thinking! Your conscious mind can help to control the way that your body responds to stressful situations. Instead of getting down on yourself, repeat affirmations like “I am fully capable of handling the obstacles that cross my path and nothing can stand in my way”. Repeating positive affirmations also reduces the levels of cortisol that are released from the adrenal glands. 7.) Write Your Stress Away. Writing in a journal can help you get out pent up emotions- relieving any built up tension. 8.) Have Fun! Do something you enjoy or watch a funny movie. Laughing releases the “feel good” chemicals in the brain. For more information on stress reduction and Acupuncture, call Mount Olive Acupuncture & Wellness 973.527.7978.

Soldier’s Daughter Shares Her Parents’ Love Story During WWII

By Henry M. Holden orld War II was known as the deadliest conflict in human history with upwards of 60-million lives destroyed. But it was also a period when individual love blossomed. Out of this catastrophic time came a love story between an American Army soldier and a young English woman. It started in a little town called Wigan, in Lancashire, England. She was a young English girl with raven hair and green eyes. Her name was Freda Cottom. He was a tall handsome soldier of Italian heritage. His name was Marco Troiano. “My mother had experienced terrible times in her childhood years, and she rarely talked about them.” said her daughter, Marcella

line for two hours and only received one egg to bring home to her family,” said Russo. “Her health had suffered from the scarcity of food. Life was extremely hard for a critically undernourished girl.” Marco Troiano lived in

Harlem, in New York City, and had enlisted in the Army right after he graduated high school, in 1942. He held the rank of Private First Class in the 94th Infantry Division, and served in combat in central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland.

One day, when Troiano was in England, on leave from the combat zone, he was playing basketball behind a church with some of his army buddies. A man struck up a conversation with Troiano. This man continued on page 7

Love Story During WWII... continued from page 6 would later become Troiano’s brother-in-law, Eddie Cottom. Cottom saw that this American soldier was different from many of the other American soldiers who were in England. He was soft-spoken, energetic and polite. Cottom wanted

Troiano to meet his sister, Freda. “When they met, their future was cast in stone,” said Russo. They saw each other regularly until Troiano left for the U.S. when the war ended. They promised to write to each other, and after many letters back

and forth from New York to Lancashire, England, Troiano sent Freda a telegram. Back in the 1940’s only the wealthy made long distance calls to Europe. So, the telegram was short, and to the point. ‘I love you. Will you marry me?’ “My mom wrote back

to tell Marco that she could not afford the airfare,”said Russo. “She told me later that she was poorer than a church mouse. Marco then sent her the airfare money. In 1947, with an airline ticket in hand, my mom left her family and friends to start her new life in an unknown country, with an unknown family.” Because of her sad memories of war-torn England,

Troiano never returned to her former home. “As she was flying over New York harbor, toward Idlewild Airport, now JFK; she cried as she looked down at the Statue of Liberty,” said Russo. “She later said that the Statue of Liberty was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen!” Unfortunately, every ethnic group immigrating to the United States has experi-

Troiano was happy and relieved she would live a better life with the man she loved, and would never again wait on ration lines for food. “My mother adapted to America very well,” said Russo. “She even learned to make Italian meatballs just the way my dad liked them.” The newlyweds settled on City Island, N.Y., and later moved to New Jersey. “They were irrevocably committed to each other,” said Russo. “They raised a daughter, and experienced more than 45-years of wonderful memories together.”

Local Dentist Lectures And Mentors Dentists Regarding Dental Implant Procedures

D

r. Ira Goldberg, a leading local authority on dental implants and owner of Morris County Dental Associates in Succasunna, spent four days in Colorado educating a group of 80 dentists regarding dental implants. Topics he covered included the use of CT scans, computers, and computer-generated products that allow for faster, safer and more-predictable treatments for patients. He also assisted the students in hands-on sessions where they practiced different surgical procedures related to implants. “These 80 doctors have taken it upon themselves to invest valuable resources, such as time and money, to educate themselves in a program called a Maxi-Course sponsored by the American Academy of Implant Den-

tistry,” states Goldberg. “Not only is it an honor to be working with such dedicated dentists, but it’s also an honor to be asked to be part of the faculty that provides this education.” The hands-on sessions are a valuable part of the dentists’ training, too. The ability to perform different types of procedures in a controlled environment of a laboratory is instrumental to the educational process and refining clinical skills. Goldberg was asked to be part of this module due to his decades of experience with these procedures. Goldberg has been involved with computer-guided implant procedures throughout his entire career, but he has seen an exponential change within the last few years. “It’s absolutely amazing

to see how things change so quickly,” says Goldberg. “I feel lucky that I am in a position not only to have all of this technology and use it every day, but also to be able to share it with other doctors.” Goldberg holds many honors in the field of implant dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Regarding his Diplomate status, there are only a few hundred dentists world-wide that hold this distinction. Goldberg performs all phases of implant dentistry and rarely are referrals required. For a free consultation, including a free 3-D scan, call his office at 973328-1225 or visit www. MorrisCountyDentist.com.

Randolph 11th Grader Wins Wind Symphony Summer Camp Scholarship

s part of its mission to mentor the next generation of wind musicians, the Hanover Wind Symphony has presented its first Summer Music Camp Scholarship to 17-year-old Christopher Mantell of Randolph High School, an outstanding alto

saxophonist. He plans to attend the Rutgers Symphonic Wind Band & Chamber Music Camp this summer and will give a solo performance with the Hanover Wind Symphony in the fall of 2017. Gail Lalk, of Morris-

town, chair of the Hanover Wind Symphony Scholarship Committee, said the scholarship was designed to give young musicians an opportunity to bolster their skills. “Scholarship applicants had to demonstrate previous talent and future interest in

performing,” she said, adding that the Hanover Wind Symphony has launched a fundraising drive for next year’s scholarship. Mantell, a junior at Randolph High School, has been studying the saxophone for seven years, taking private lessons with his older brother, Ryan Mantell, a graduate student in saxophone performance at Rutgers University. Speaking about his brother, Christopher Mantell said: “He got me where I am now because of his dedication to always push me to be a better musician.” Mantell is looking forward to the Rutgers Symphonic Wind Band & Chamber Music Camp, noting that he hopes to, “gain a greater knowledge of myself as a musician and a greater understanding of the saxophone from Dr. Paul Cohen. I also hope to gain greater musical experience from playing in more intimate chamber ensembles, such as saxophone quartets.” The camp, which is located at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick, offers an opportunity for musicians to gain a richer experience in chamber

music ensembles and symphonic wind bands. Dawn D. Russo, director of bands at Randolph High School, said “Chris is a very hard-working musician and is a strong member of the RHS band program.” The scholarship winner is a member of the school’s Wind Ensemble, the Jazz Ensemble and the Marching Rams. He has also performed with the North Jersey Area Band Wind Ensemble, the Region I Wind Ensemble and the Ridgewood Concert Band, a high-level adult band. Mantell plans to attend college in pursuit of a degree in music education and saxophone performance. “I hope to also receive a master’s degree at some point, and possibly a doctoral degree,” he notes. “I aspire to become a great saxophone performer, as well as a high school music educator or a collegiate saxophone professor. Being the recipient of the Hanover Wind Symphony Summer Music Camp Scholarship is an absolute honor and privilege. I am extremely excited to be able to perform a concerto with the Hanover Wind Symphony, as it will be another great musical

opportunity for me that will expand my experience as a musician.” Hanover Wind Symphony Scholarship Committee members include Gail Lalk, committee chair, plus Aldo Cugnini of Long Valley, Betty Peters of Lake Hopatcong, Len Stern of Kinnelon, Ed Abelew of Cedar Knolls, Dru Gaffney of Succasunna, Matthew Paterno of Parsippany and Kurt Zimmermann of Rockaway. Donations to the Hanover Wind Symphony Scholarship Program may be mailed to the Hanover Wind Symphony, P.O. Box 100, Whippany, NJ 07981. Checks should be made payable to the Hanover Wind Symphony with “Scholarship Fund” in the memo line. Inquiries about the program may be emailed to info@hanoverwinds.org.

Randolph’s School Music Program Receives National Recognition

he National Association of Music Merchants has named Randolph Township Schools as a Best Communities for Music Education winner for its commitment to music education for the 10th year in a row. Randolph is one of four percent of districts across the nation receiving the award in 2017. The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Randolph answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facili-

ties, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “We are very proud of our long-standing reputation as being one of the most respected and strongest music programs in the state,” said Frank Perrone, Randolph’s supervisor of visual and performing arts. “Receiving this designation for the 10th year continues to show the dedication our district and community has in providing our students with the best musical experience. Our music teachers continue to provide our students with a top-notch music education, and we are grateful for their commitment to our music

department.” The award recognizes that Randolph is leading the way with music learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act. The legislation, signed into law in Dec. 2015 and awaiting state implementation, designates music and the arts as important elements of well-rounded education for all children. Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. In a series of landmark studies by scientists and researchers at Northwestern University, a link was found between students in community music programs and life-long academic success,

including higher high school graduation rates and college attendance. In another study from the University, it was discovered that the benefits of early exposure to music education improve how the

brain processes and assimilates sounds, a trait that lasts well into adulthood. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by The National Association of Music Mer-

chants and its approximately 10,300 members around the world. For more information about The NAMM Foundation, visit www. nammfoundation.org.

benefits of the program is it assists patients and caregivers in reducing burdensome, multiple pharmacy visits, and more importantly, increasing compliance & adherence by preventing missed doses and missed refills leading to improved therapeutic benefits while reducing hospital admissions – not a service that every chain pharmacy offers.” Refills can be coordinated for multiple family members so they are filled on the same day and have the option to also have the medications packaged in easy to manage multi-dose packaging systems thereby reducing time, effort & potential errors spent in filling pill boxes at home. Patients would receive a remind-

er call from the pharmacy seven days before the refills become due to be filled and once again when ready for pick up or have them delivered to their residence. The best part – these are all free services provided to help patients stay well to live well. In addition, LiveWell Pharmacy also stocks a full line of over-the-counter products including Windmill Vitamin products, Greeting Cards, Gift Cards, Mueller Sports braces, durable medical equipment and much more. To learn more, stop by the store for the Grand Opening event. “We can’t wait to see everyone on Saturday June 10, as Mayor Carey and Township officials will be on hand, for the Ribbon Cut-

ting Ceremony. We would like to invite the community to stop by and learn more about all our unique services” says Patel. The June 10 Grand Opening Event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m., food & refreshments, special customer giveaways (while supplies last) and a Grand Prize drawing for a chance to win a Kindle Fire and an Amazon Echo. B

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta rendan Fletcher, a semi-finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” last year, is lined up to perform at Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown on Mon., June 12. All proceeds will support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It wasn’t too long ago that Fletcher was performing at a small bar across the street from MPAC. He’d pass the theatre, look up at the marquee and wonder if he’d ever play “a place like that.” One year later, it’s a dream come true for singer, guitarist, songwriter, Fletcher, who is now touring all over the United States, and in other countries. Fletcher grew up in Randolph and is now living in Ridgewood, Queens. While his parents weren’t

The Voice Semi-Finalist To Perform Benefit At MPAC musicians, they were no strangers to good music. Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, and Simon & Garfunkel were always played on the home stereo system. But the main reason Fletcher got into music was because of his older brother Steve, who performed in high school bands. Steve gave Fletcher the opportunity to play rhythm guitar in the band. Each year the brothers were in the high school’s Battle of the Bands. “It [performing] was a consistent in my life,” said Fletcher. When Fletcher went off to college at Boston University, he no longer had his brother as his support system. “I had to do it on my own,” he said. And for the first time, he found his voice. With Steve, he played heavier music like hard rock

and punk. Once that got out of his system, he went on the singer/songwriter kick. At college he studied film and television, but when he came back to Randolph, he’d play gigs at local venues doing cover songs. When Fletcher got an internship in New York at a writing room, writing scripts, it wasn’t his true passion – music was. “The internship wasn’t what I expected,” said Fletcher, who realized he had to do something if he didn’t want to do film. That’s when he decided to pursue music seriously. In Philadelphia auditions were being held for “The Voice” – a television show where the strongest vocalists from across the country compete with one another for a chance to win a recording contract. While Fletcher stood in

line with thousands of other hopefuls, he heard everyone around him practicing. He said, “I think I’m okay, but I heard people in front of me singing Etta James better than Etta James.” After waiting five hours, he was chosen for an audition with 10 other people. Each person got to sing one minute of a song. Fletcher sang “Jolene” by Ray LaMontagne. He was asked to sing another song, then got called back for another audition and got the break most musicians can only fantasize about. He became one of the 11th season semi-finalists. Since then Fletcher’s rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” hit No. 2 on the iTunes overall chart; and his cover of “Whipping Post” by The Allman Brothers hit No. 1 on the iTunes rock chart.

“It feels amazing,” said Fletcher, adding, “If it wasn’t for my family, I couldn’t have done it. I’m very blessed to have them.” Still inspired by the same music he listened to growing up, Fletcher said, “Bob Dylan and Neil Young write such beautiful, meaningful lyrics. They have made a career that says, ‘I never really compromised who I was.’ That’s an admirable trait.” As of now, Fletcher is recording an EP which should

be out before the show at MPAC and wants to keep writing. “I want to stay creative and pursue the thing I always loved,” he said, regarding his musical career. In his free time, Fletcher likes to bowl, play pool, and hang out with his friends. “I have a great group of friends,” he said.
