Local Churches Reach Out Through Operation Christmas Child

By Elsie Walker little girl opened a gift box on Christmas and a big smile appeared on her face. Seeing that, the adults nearby wondered what caused such happiness. The girl took out her treasure: Some folded sheets of plain paper. What some might see as hardly a gift can mean so much to a poor child.

In this case, the child loved to draw, but had no paper. In some countries, a Christmas box that includes school supplies can mean education, as now the child receiving that can attend school. Children such as these usually don’t get Christmas gifts or even know why Christmas is celebrated.

While some may think it seems early to be thinking about Christmas, it isn’t for two local churches that are reaching out to poor children around the globe through a project this fall.

Through Operation Christmas Child, shoebox-size boxes are filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, and sent to needy children in more than 100

countries around the world, and with each one will be added the Christmas story of the birth of Christ.

While the boxes may seem like a small thing, Stela and the Rev. Dr. Nick Petrov of Landing can attest to their power. When they lived in their native Bulgaria, the Petrovs were on the receiving end, getting the boxes and distributing them to needy children through the church they served.

This year, the Petrovs are seeing the project from the giving end as they have inspired the churches Nick pastors to participate in Operation Christmas Child.

“When we lived in Bulgaria and distributed the Operation Christmas Child boxes, we witnessed the joy the boxes bring in orphanages, hospitals, schools, and to gypsy families and Muslim kids,’’ said Nick Petrov. “We have seen an unimaginable lack and poverty, but the boxes carried joyfulness and relief to kids and families in need. They all loved the boxes.

“Also, those Muslim families were always happy that Jesus cares for them, even though

they are of a different religion,’’ he continued. “As the Pastor of Millbrook United Methodist Church and Port Morris United Methodist Church, I feel so blessed that these two congregations joyfully stepped up to participate in this international outreach project.”

While attending a local ecumenical Thanksgiving service last year, Stela saw the boxes she had known so well in Bulgaria. She

discovered it was a project of Samaritan’s Purse International Relief and then found the New Jersey coordinator for the project.

Petrov told the coordinator that she knew of the project from the perspective of one who hands out the boxes. She was asked to speak to a group about her experiences this past summer. Then, Stela Petrov decided to ask her husband’s churches to join in the continued on page 5

Change Your Genes Everyday Yep…I’m Referring To Your Genes Not Your Jeans

I

mean you should probably change your jeans every few days as well, but that’s a discussion for another time and another day.

You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life.

You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true? What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! I know, I know… now you feel like you’ve been living a lie, but it’s time to wake up!! Check this out… Research shows that those who practice Meditation/Yoga can “steer” their DNA, reducing inflammation and reducing their risks for diseases like cancer.

You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down…

Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other

processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines.

These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NFKb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place. Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases.

On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases

and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! “Every box is important; every child is important,” she has told the Port Morris congregation. In Bulgaria, the Petrovs distributed boxes through their church to a children’s hospital, three orphanages and a weekly child development center.

The latter is for parents who cannot afford care for their children while they work, so leave the children there on Monday and pick them up on Friday. The church would bring the boxes to the children, or, if possible, bring the children to the church.

Wherever the boxes were distributed, the church made it a time of celebration for the children.

They developed relationships with the orphanages and started a weekly arts and crafts program for the children.

Stela told of children in the hospital who went to sleep hugging the Christmas box tightly.

The way it works is that special boxes are distributed by Samaritan’s Purse and then can

be filled according to sex (boy or girl) and age grouping: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. On its Operation Christmas Child webpage, Samaritan’s Purse shares what items can be put in a box. Stela noted that it is a “combination of the useful and something that will make the child happy.” She shared that people can also put a picture and/or note to the recipient.

In one case, that picture in a Christmas box led to love. On Facebook, Nick saw the story of a little boy who made a Christmas box in 2000 and included his picture and address in it. The recipient was a little girl in the Philippines. She tried to write the boy, but the letter was returned.

Years later, she tried looking for him on Facebook and found him.

They started a friendship which ended in marriage.

Boxes can be put together by individuals or taken on as a group project. Postage can be paid online or given to a drop-off site. If postage is paid online, an individual can track the box to

its final stop. Stela noted that each box’s travel is a long one as it goes through many countries and each country has its own customs procedures. Thus, the boxes sent this year will probably be given out next year.

Stela noted how happy she is to be involved in the giving side of the project, and said it is a blessing to be able to involve her own children, Angie and David, in helping children less fortunate.

However, more help is needed,

she said.

“Every year, there are more children than boxes,” she said.

The collection week for completed Operation Christmas Child boxes is Nov. 13 through Nov. 20.

RHS Awarded Excellence In Fundraising To Help Aid Childhood Cancer

By Dawn M Chiossi tudents at Roxbury High School were bestowed the prestigious Excellence in Fundraising Award last month at the 2017 Mini-Thon Leadership Summit from The Four Diamonds Organization in Pennsylvania.

Four Diamonds covers 100 percent of all expenses related to cancer care that is not covered by insurance for eligible Four Diamonds children.

It has assisted an impressive 100 percent of patients treated

by Penn State Children’s Hospital.

Mini-Thons are a national movement based off of Penn State’s Thons to help out children struggling with childhood cancer.

Roxbury High School’s MiniThon consists of roughly 30 dedicated committee members and leaders, 400 students, and countless others who contribute their efforts and talents.

They raised an impressive $52,237.82 for this cause, and all proceeds went directly to Four Diamonds.

Warm and passionate on the subject of altruism, the students at RHS find purpose in helping.

Many still can’t wrap their minds around the honor they received Aug. 4 at the summit.

“We are overwhelmed,” admits Mike Gottfried, advisor for RHS Mini-Thon Club. “The Excellence in Fundraising award was a huge surprise to all of us. We are still in disbelief at the significant growth and student/community support that this cause has received.”

Mini-Thon President, senior Sarah Waldron, who has been involved with Mini-Thons since her freshman year, agrees. “When they called us up to earn a fundraising award my jaw nearly dropped,” Waldron says. “I had to ask Mr. Gottfried if this was real.”

Humble in her response, Waldron says, “We won this award together. Without the committee, our wonderful advisors, and the support from our community, RHS Mini-Thon would not be what it is known to be.”

AT fun way for students to get involved in such a worthy cause. In short, they become empowered to make a difference to the children battling cancer and to those that love them.

The RHS Mini-Thon Club began as part of the Key Club in 2013-14 and unofficially separated a year later, making the Mini-Thon its own club.

The always popular minithons at RHS have been going on strong for the past 5 years.

And the numbers just keep growing. According to Gottfried, the amount of students involved in the Mini-Thon has tripled compared to those in just last year.

Originally getting involved with the mini-thons, students at Roxbury wanted to make a difference, to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Waldron says, “Mini-Thon is a family at Roxbury. I would call it a family, helping out other families. At the end of the day it’s not about how much we raised, it’s about who that money is affect-

ing. Members get involved because they realize that this isn’t about themselves. They begin to see that all the work we are putting out is going to a family that is battling cancer. Cancer affects everyone, not just the child affected with it. Once our members know that, they are willing to fight so much harder for those families.”

Dedication and devotion to the cause was their mission.

Fundraisers throughout the whole year were varied and appealed to all. Fundraisers included ice cream sales after school, video game nights, a pickleball tournament, candy grams, and much more.

In addition, amounts were greatly enhanced by individual fundraising efforts.

Gottfried describes a 13 hour overnight event. In order to attend, students had to raise a minimum of $35. The top fundraiser of nearly $2,000 came from one student alone, Lexy Fabiani.

“The Mini-Thon has grown significantly since its inauguration at Roxbury High School,” he tells, “What started out as a dream has rapidly become a reality over the last four years.”

Utterly proud and impressed with the students, Gottfried shares that even on the bus ride home the students quickly switched their focus from celebrating, to how to make next year even more successful. For the two-and- a-half hours it

took to get home, the Roxbury Mini-Thoner’s spent that time discussing, brainstorming and eagerly sharing ideas.

“I’ve never seen a group of students so motivated to work towards a cause,” Gottfried comments. “It was raw and genuine enthusiasm.”

Goals and aspirations for next year’s Mini-Thon are always for it to continue to expand and grow.

They have a monetary goal of a $75,000. While on the surface it may seem like a lofty goal, it is well worth it.

When asked about the moment that she finds most memorable, Waldron does not mention the ceremony. Instead she emotionally describes a visit to the children’s hospital.

“I can never get the picture out of my head of the little girl on a red tricycle in a princess dress and a crown on her shaved head,” describes Waldron. “This was the happiest little girl I’ve ever seen. It broke my heart to know that a disease could take over her smile. Just another reminder on why we are fighting this fight for them.”

A Look At History Of Roxbury Library’s Vintage Gazebo

By Marge Cushing lot of excitement has been generated recently about the 19th Century gazebo that stands in stark contrast to the 1974 Roxbury Roxbury Public Library building.

In spite of the architectural dichotomy of the two, they bear a significant relationship, one worth exploring.

Mary Wolfe Thompson, for whom the gazebo is named, was a published author of articles, historical fiction for young adult readers and biographical works.

She was born in 1886 in Jersey City, and within a year of her birth, she and her parents, Dr. Theodore F. Wolfe, a physician, and Gertrude Franklin Wolfe, moved to Main Street, Succasunna, to a new “Queen Anne cottage,” which Mary Wolfe Thompson described in her autobiography as having “a tower on one corner” and “bits of gingerbread and artistic woodwork” over the front door.

elements would be fashioned into today’s gazebo.

Mary, an only child, described a joyous childhood in the township in her autobiography, “The Wag on the Wall.’’ She recalled carefree days walking up Main Street, a dirt road, to the 1856 Chestnut Hill School, which was only recently demolished for construction of housing by Habitat for Humanity.

Her childhood came to an abrupt halt in 1900, when she was 14 years old, due to the early death of her mother, at which time her grief-stricken father, uncertain as to how to raise a daughter alone, sent her to a boarding school out of town.

Shortly thereafter, Dr. Wolfe closed up the Queen Anne cottage, relocating to Jersey City to be among his colleagues from academia.

In 1959, the newly formed Roxbury Woman’s Club, founded to enhance the community, identified the need for a local public library. By April of 1960, the Roxbury Library Association was

formed, undertaking a successful township-wide fundraising effort that expedited its pursuit of a suitable place to locate the facility.

Mary was permanently residing with her husband in Arlington, Vt., but became aware of the library movement and offered to sell her “Dear Queen Anne,’’ to the Library Association at a price well below market value to become its first library.

By September of 1961, the interior of the house was appropriately outfitted, and the library was officially dedicated, staffed mainly with volunteers and a very small paid staff. A visit to the library was a bit like going to Grandma’s house: Stepping onto the porch, walking through the inviting front door to roam its rooms, perhaps to sit in a cozy alcove, leafing through a book picked from a shelf.

Upon Mary’s death in 1970 at the age of 84, she bequeathed her late father’s entire estate to the library, her final loving gesture to the community of her

childhood.

By 1974, the library in the Queen Anne cottage was deemed inadequate. A difficult decision was made to demolish the house for construction of a modern library on the site, but not before decorative architectural elements were salvaged to create the Mary Wolfe Thompson Queen Anne Gazebo, memorializing the original library and its major benefactor.

In its present location, the gazebo is thought to be better situated for the performance of cultural activities, and is more accessible to passers-by who might choose to stop and relax for a moment, and perhaps pay tribute to all those, past and present, who contribute their time and resources toward the enhancement of life in Roxbury Township, which has been designated “One of the best communities across the USA for young families.”

Hopatcong High School Dives Into School Year With New Technology And Courses

Hopatcong High School is preparing for this upcoming school year with some new changes that will benefit its student body.

The world is always changing, presenting new challenges and obstacles in the way of the future generation’s success.

What if students could not only sit down and listen, but also get up and act?

This year, teachers have received more professional development learning based on how to incorporate Problem Based Learning, or PBL, into the classroom. PBL is all about solving real world problems with one’s resources. Since technology is a huge part of lives today, all students are provided Chrome-

books to assist in their learning.

Problem Based Learning allows for more open-ended and open-minded education, making classes more dynamic and making it easier to integrate more technology into lessons.

At HHS, students will not only learn important concepts, they will learn how to effectively apply these concepts to the world around them.

Students who are having trouble with a research paper, short story or college essay can now stop by HHS’ new Writing Lab. The writing lab is a new study aid that will be held during select lunch periods. Students now have the ability to simply walk into the writing lab and get immediate help on any writing assignments.

Another new opportunity taking place at HHS this year is access to the new SCCC Dual Enrollment Courses.

courses are in partnership with SCCC, and they allow students to take college level courses while still in high school. The students are able to receive both high school and college credits simultaneously. To be able to take these courses, students must pass SCCC’s Accuplacer test for Math and English unless they have sufficient SAT or ACT scores. By taking these classes during high school students are able to earn college credits for half the cost. “[I’m most excited about] strategizing and refining HHS’ goals, preparing students for college and beyond and creating an enjoyable, engaging work environment,” said Lewis Benfatti, principal at HHS. “Everything is updated and organized so that we can assist students the best way possible.”

Hopatcong High School is not just a school, but a small

community of people who want to learn and who care about one another. HHS fosters creativity amongst its students, giving them a wide array of choices for classes, sports and extracurricular activities.

“The students are accepting and not afraid to express their originality,” said Jamie Walker, director of Guidance.

Not only that, but the staff is dedicated to helping the students grow into open-minded, problem-solving individuals ready to tackle the competitive world that awaits them.

Some other new things happening this school year include anti-bullying and anti-drug presentations and more community service activities. Other new or special events happening at HHS can be seen on its multiple social media accounts, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Fifth Annual Lake Hopatcong Lake Loop Set For Sept. 24

he Lake Hopatcong Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to improving Lake Hopatcong, plans to host the fifth annual “LHF Lake Loop” on Sept. 24 at Hopatcong State Park.

The event includes three scenic routes to bike around Lake Hopatcong- a 20-mile, 40-mile, or 62-mile challenge - as well as a 1.5-mile or 5K adventure walk or trail run on the State Park grounds and a 2.5 mile paddling route on Lake Hopatcong, off the State Park beach.

Participants are able to rent a kayak, canoe or paddle-board for the event during the online registration process.

Last year’s dog walk option will return, so furry friends can enjoy the adventure trail run/ walk path from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six foot and individuals will need to clean up after their pooch. Pet food and supplies will also be collected and donated to a local animal shelter.

This is not a timed event and attendees can do any combination of the activities they choose. Starting times have been

staggered to allow individuals to partake of multiple events.

Registration is available for individuals or teams at www.lakehopatcongfoundation.org/events/ lake-loop. The registration fee is $45 if pre-registered by midnight on Sept. 22. Day of registration is available starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 24 and is $65.

“We really rely on participants to take the next step and create a fundraising page to help us raise much needed monies to do the work we do,” said Jennifer DeWitt, Lake Hopatcong Foundation Development director. “Once registered, an email is sent giving quick and easy instructions on setting up an individual or team Crowdrise fundraising page. We also have a fundraising tool kit available to assist. Any amount raised can make a huge impact for us.”

Prizes and perks—including a VIP tent—will be awarded to the top fundraising individuals that raise $500 or more. VIP participants that raise $1,000 or more will receive a gorgeous Lake Hopatcong blanket.

Hopatcong Teachers Taught Each Other This Summer

T

he Hopatcong School District embarked on a new endeavor in which staff-driven professional development was offered during the summer months.

This new PD series consisted of a collection of courses on using G-suite/ Google Apps for Education as well as Smartboard Technologies.

They were taught by Hopatcong Borough Schools staff members. These courses ran during the week of Aug. 21 to Aug. 24.

Skills mastered in these workshops include the use of Hyperdocs, Goo-

gle forms, creating an organized drive, Google Classroom setup, Smartboard l e s s o n s / re s o u rc e s and more. Approximately 37 staff members participated in this new opportunity. The workshops received an overwhelmingly positive response. Hopatcong High School teacher Karen Cubberly said: “I enjoyed

the classes offered. I had a lot of fun and feel much better equipped to begin the school year with some of the technology we use.”

Middle School teacher Sue Hill said: “I learned more from my PD this past week that will benefit my students, than (from) the PD that we have experienced with outside vendors.”

he Lake Hopatcong Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to improving Lake Hopatcong, plans to host its fifth annual “LHF Lake Loop” Sept. 24 in Hopatcong State Park.

The event includes three scenic routes to bike around Lake

Hopatcong; riders can choose a 20-mile, 40-mile, or 62-mile challenge, as well as a 1.5-mile or 5K adventure walk or trail run on the State Park grounds and a 2.5-mile paddling route on Lake Hopatcong, off the State Park beach.

endors are being encouraged to register early for the third-annual “Home for the Holidays” street festival, scheduled for Sat., Dec. 2 on Main Street in Succasunna.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.

The event takes place both inside and outside of the library and the two churches on Main Street. The Township of Roxbury, along with community members, is planning a day filled with vendors and crafters, musical entertainment, crafts and activities for kids, costumed characters, hot

chocolate, puppeteers and food trucks.

Stockton Carriage Tours will offer old-fashioned carriage rides with jingle-belled horses. Dennis Cassidy, a blacksmith, will demonstrate the art of a farrier at the Village Antique Store. Santa will be available for pictures.

Last year’s dog walk option will return, so furry friends can enjoy the adventure trail run/ walk path from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six foot and individuals will need to clean up after their pooch. It is not a timed event and attendees can do any combination of the activities they choose.

Starting times have been staggered to allow individuals to partake of multiple events. Registration is available for individuals or teams at www.lakehopatcongfoundation.org/events/ lake-loop. The registration fee is $45 if pre-registered by midnight on Sept. 22. Day-of registration is available starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 24 and is $65.

“We really rely on participants to take the next step and create a fundraising page to help us raise

much needed monies to do the work we do,” said Jennifer DeWitt, Lake Hopatcong Foundation development director. “Once registered, an email is sent giving quick and easy instructions on setting up an individual or team Crowdrise fundraising page. We also have a fundraising toolkit available to assist. Any amount raised can make a huge impact for us.”

Prizes and perks — including a VIP tent — will be awarded to fundraising individuals who raise $500 or more. VIP participants who raise $1,000 or more will receive a Lake Hopatcong blanket.

All LHF Lake Loop partakers receive free food and drink the day of the event provided by local restaurants, a t-shirt and entertainment by several area bands.

Pink Extensions Fundraiser For Breast Cancer Cure Kicks Off At Alfonso’s Salon

O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month. and throughout the month, Alfonso’s Salon for the 7th year in a row is joining the fight to defeat breast cancer, the second leading cancer killer of women.

100% of donations and profits for this fundraiser will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure of North Jersey.

“We are proud to help where we can to raise funds to assist research, increase awareness and promote screenings,” says

Alfonso, owner/stylist of Alfonso’s Salon at Sutton Plaza.

“Breast Cancer affects so many families. I have seen it touch the lives of many, and happily count many as successful survivors of this disease, because of early detection.”The Salon has received much recognition for their efforts to help defeat breast cancer, and is offering pink hair extensions to commemorate the cause. The extensions are available in a shade of bright pink for $12 each. In order to eliminate

any bank fees cash is required.

The non-permanent extensions are a simple process and it only takes minutes to apply, Alfonso reports. “We compress the pink extension into the hair without causing any harm to the client’s own hair. They look great

on women of all ages, from kids to seniors, with some customers getting two or three at a time.

They can be easily cut to any length the client wants and will stay in as long as a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner is not used on the root area.

Eagle Scouts Thanked By Freeholders

T

he Morris County Board of Freeholders recently honored several Eagle Scouts from across Morris County for a series of ambitious scout projects that assisted local towns, neighborhoods, the ecology, and a local high school in projects that each required hundreds of hours of volunteer efforts by the scouts and their volunteer project teams.

Included was a project done

by Roxbury scout Ben Smith to create a Welcome to Roxbury Township sign on Route 10 that compliments one done by his dad, Kyle Smith, several decades earlier.

“It is a privilege for the Board of Freeholders to celebrate the positive efforts of these young men and women who took it

upon themselves to make positive impacts on their respective communities,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. “They, obviously, are the future leaders of Morris County, and we salute them.”

The freeholders, at their meeting in Morristown, awarded county certificates of achievement eight scouts, including the following scouts from the local coverage area: Benjamin Smith, Troop 159, Succasunna; William Lawrence Wainscott, Troop 155, Hanover Township; and Joseph Mihalko, Troop 155, Hanover Township.

Heard Seeking Tax Code Petition Signers
