Ledgewood Mall Keeping Brick And Mortar Strong With Renovation Plan

By: J.L. Shively esidents of Roxbury are all too familiar with the current “ghost town” state of the Ledgewood Mall but many residents also remember the bustling hub it used to be. Opening nearly 40 years ago, the Ledgewood Mall has seen many changes since its heyday, yet it is only in more recent years that the property has come to be nearly vacant. The closing of anchor store, Macy’s in 2015 marked a definite decline, leaving the mall nearly vacant with only Marshall’s, Ashley Furniture, and Bath and Body Works holding their ground in the main building. Sports Authority and restaurant, Ruby Tuesday’s closed within the last year leaving the large outbuilding along Mary Louise Ave. empty except for Men’s Wearhouse. Otherwise the mall in

the Ledgewood center has an empty and almost abandoned look compared to the neighboring mall of Roxbury. With the purchase of the property by partners, Advance Realty and DeBartolo Development two years ago, the plan and focus has turned towards renovating and rejuvenating the property. Jared Minatelli, director of Asset Management with Advance Realty acknowledges the current struggles of interior malls and speaks to the owner’s intention to “revitalize the mall” by giving the mall not only a facelift but by converting the structure to outdoor spacing for food, entertainment and service. The Ledgewood Mall was for “30 plus years an economic epicenter of that region of Morris county and we believe it can be that again,” states Minatelli. Township Manager John

Shepherd states, “Being new to Roxbury, it did not take long to realize that the Ledgewood Mall property is significantly underutilized. But I quickly realized that the property was nearing final approval for a redevelopment plan.” Foremost in this redevelopment plan, the mall was given a new name to match its upcoming revamped stature and is now the Shops at Ledgewood Commons. The company’s vision of an outdoor mall would include retrofitting the interior mall into new tenant space, states Minatelli and

then creating an entirely new façade onto the building from the current space where Marshall’s is situated up until Walmart. Walmart, though a large cornerstone store, is owned separately and renovation of the façade is not included in Advance Realty’s plans. This is not to say that Walmart cannot choose to renovate on its own, explains Minatelli. The first step of construction is slotted to be the demolition of the Macy’s building, which stands front and center to the rear mall. As part of the agreement

Advance Realty and DeBartolo Development had in purchasing the property, the Macy’s structure, as well as any structures to be demolished in the construction, will be first used by the Roxbury Fire Department and Emergency Services to perform practice drills. Mike Pellek, fire official with Roxbury Township, explains that this is always something he looks to arrange when a building in the area is slated for demolition. The use of a building in this way allows for “more realistic, hands-on training,” explains Pellek, giving firefighters and emergency responders a chance to “better their skills” in a setting which is closer to the real thing. The agreement between the fire department and the current mall owners included a 30 day notice before demolition, which came up in July. Currently the fire depart-

ment is waiting on proper insurance clearances from the town before they commence running drills this month, explains Pellek. Drills that will likely be practiced on these structures, such as the Macy’s building which has a wide open floor plan, would include a wide area search, forcing doors, and even going onto the roof to cut holes to practice ventilations skills, states Pellek. Overall Pellek states that the town is looking forward to this project to better the mall and appreciates the “good partnership” between the town and current mall owners which will also “provide valuable training to the fire department.” After the demolition of the Macy’s building, other phases of the reconstruction can begin, including work done to current structures to create a unified look as well as re-landscaping the entire continued on page 2

Ledgewood Mall... continued from front page area and parking lot which includes new directional signage for shops. The current plans also include the construction of what is known as pod buildings on the site, states Minatelli, which are standalone buildings that will be interspersed throughout the property which will be open tenant space. Although Minatelli states that “nothing has been finalized yet” regarding stores with current leases or interested tenants, the company is busy dividing up the space. The mall developers and stores with current leases are still in dialogue about any moves or changes including Marshalls, Men’s Wearhouse and Barnes & Noble and nothing regard-

ing any moves has been finalized yet, Minatelli explains. The Sport’s Authority structure, Minatelli states, will be brought up to modern standards and renovated to match the new façade of the main mall. In terms of new tenants for this space discussion so far has not been too formal but Minatelli expresses a “very strong interest from a good variety of strong retailers.” Shepherd states, “The retail environment is changing rapidly and I believe that this property being re-developed into quality space is a significant achievement for the Township.” Another change to the site will likely include the implementation of a left turn lane from Rt. 10 onto

Mary Louise Ave. After discussion with the town council at an Aug. 8 meeting, the “Council approved submittal for the Street Intersection Application to NJDOT,” states Shepherd, however this approval was conditioned that the design drawings be revised to extend the left turn lane by 150 feet. Minatelli also expressed Advance Realty’s interest in including an additional entrance to the mall. This entrance would be between Mary Louise Ave. and Lake St. and would be a main drive aisle to the new mall. The buildings which currently house Wendy’s, Red Lobster, and the former Pizza Hut are not part of the property now owned by Advance Realty and DeBartolo, and therefore, is not

involved in the plans. Russell Stern, township planner and director of Planning for Roxbury Township states, “The property has also been approved with outdoor courtyards that could accommodate dining. Even in this difficult climate of brick and mortar retail,

the improvements proposed by the developer should lead to successful project with a good mix of tenants. The residents I’ve spoken with are excited with this proposal and eagerly awaiting the upgrade of the mall and new shopping, dining and eating experiences.”

With a start date for major construction slated for this month, Minatelli explains that the projected date for completion is expected to be between 18 to 24 months, placing completion to be sometime in 2019.

Grant Money Keeps History Alive In Ledgewood’s One Room Schoolhouse

W

By Jane Primerano ooden desks in ascending order of size fill what was once the front parlor of the Theodore King House in Ledgewood. The classroom is the project of Brian Morrell, a trustee of the historic district that includes the house and the neighboring King Store. Morrell acquired some of the desks when the old Netcong School was demolished. The attic was full of school room desks offered for sale at $5 each. He later added to his collection and also acquired old school books and photos of Roxbury Township’s early one-room schoolhouses. A few groups of children have visited the school-

room and Morrell is hoping more come during the next school year. Nearby St. Therese’s School is planning some visits, he said. He obtained an early example of a typical school day, including the teacher and a couple of students reporting early to stoke the potbellied stove with wood in winter. All year, a bucket of water had to be brought in first thing for the students to drink during the course of the day. The course work included reading, arithmetic, grammar, spelling, penmanship and geography. A typical day started with the Pledge of Allegiance, reading a passage from the Bible, reciting the Lord’s Prayer and then roll call. The teacher assigned lessons for each grade, then

supervised each grade level in turn. Lining the walls are photos of some of the oneroom schools in Roxbury and students from the late 19th Century. Morrell explained in the days when all children walked to school, schoolhouses had to be situated around the township. One, Lafayette School in Lower Berkshire Valley, is still standing and the township has retained an architectural firm to find an appropriate re-use. Others are partially intact, like Alpaugh School on Unnenberg Avenue which is part of a house and the Port Morris School which was turned into the Methodist Church. Gone is the Chestnut Hill Church, later the town-

Registration Open To All For Roxbury Preschool Program

egistrations are still being accepted for the Roxbury Community School’s Preschool Program for the 2017/2018 school year. The Roxbury Community School Preschool Program is a tuition-based program open to children ages 3 to 5 who are fully potty trained. The preschool program is housed at Kennedy Elementary School in Succasunna, and is open to Roxbury and non-Roxbury residents. Limited spots are

available. This five-day program runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with flexible extended care options available, and runs congruently with the district calendar. The program incorporates activities within the classroom based on the children’s individual learning styles with the goal to provide an enriched preschool environment that meets the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of all students.

One Room Schoolhouse... continued from page 3 Each school had its own directors and curriculum. Some things were uniform, however, such as rules: Teachers must not marry during the term of their contract, smoke cigarettes, dye their hair or dress in bright colors. Once transportation became available, municipalities consolidated their schools. In Roxbury, the first such school was The Grey Building on Hillside

Avenue in Succasunna. Children could take the trolley down Main Street to Hillside and only have to walk up to the school. Roxbury was larger than it is now, including Netcong, Mt. Olive and Mt. Arlington at one point. The King House received a $120,000 Morris County Historic Preservation grant as well as the maximum $15,000 grant from the 1772 Foundation, a charitable arm of the

Kean family who named their foundation after the year their family home, Liberty Hall in Union was constructed. The 1772 grant required a match which the township provided. Morrell said the money will be used for new windows, doors and siding, all carefully mimicking the historic fabric. He said the building will be far easier to keep warm in winter after the work is done.

Rare American Flags On Display In Morris County Library

A

merican flags from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are on display in the lobby of the Morris County Library through Sept. 15. The Morris County Heritage Commission and the Morris County Library are presenting a special display entitled “Saluting Old Glory: Our Nation’s Flag.’’ The display details the history of the Star-Spangled Banner, and is on view through Tues., Aug. 25. Items in the exhibit cases will be on view through Sept. 15. Flags and exhibit cases of related items are on view on the first and second floors. A third exhibit case, lo-

cated on the fifth floor of the County Administration Building in Morristown, also features examples of rare and unusual American flags. Visitors to the county library exhibit can view a selection of American flags and see the changes that took place from the Colonial Period to the Mid-20th Century. Also on view are vintage children’s books, period photographs and other materials related to the Stars and Stripes. While each flag in the exhibit has an interesting history, three have ties to Morris County. The first, on loan from the Historical Society of Boonton Township, is an

original 35-star Civil War flag. This rare American flag was handed down to Mrs. Oscar Kincaid, Sr., from her aunt, and remained in the Kincaid family for almost 150 years. The second is a small 39-star silk parade flag with hand-painted gold stars, on loan from the Morristown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A third flag, from the special collections in the Morris County Archives, was handcrafted in silk in 1940, and is on display in the library lobby. New Durban School Arts Program Celebrated At Premiere

tudents in the Durban Avenue School’s SMART Art Integration Program celebrated their success, sharing their infomercials with family and friends at a recent school Red Carpet Premier event. Students at the Hopatcong school completed this unique learning opportunity thanks to a $100,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Education. Participants in the program, Student Motivation through the Arts/ Reasoning and Technology for Sustainable Success, were able to celebrate their

achievements during the event. With help from teachers and guest speakers, students were able to create infomercials using geometry, language arts literacy, and newly acquired arts skills through the S + M (ART) = S2 program. The new arts integration studio located at Durban was an essential component in fusing all of the ideas, hard work, recording, and editing for the group presentations. Families, friends, teachers, board members, and administrators cheered as students walked down the

red carpet. During the event, guests were able to view each group’s infomercial on the big screen. Achievement awards were presented to each student group, based on specific criteria in the productions. Light refreshments were served and family photo shoots were offered to the guests to commemorate the students’ accomplishments. The program offers students the best of both worlds, academics and the arts. The focus of the grant was to improve writing and math skills, specifically geometry and measurement

through the use of the arts. Art teachers and subject areas teachers worked together to plan lessons that focused on language arts, math and performing arts standards. Students were taught acting skills and then wrote their own info-

mercials, which promoted a certain product that the students created. Students also designed their own packaging for the product. The skits reflected what they learned about acting and also incorporated geometry skills.

At the Red Carpet Premier, Acting Superintendent Joanne Mullane and Durban Avenue School Principal Tracey Hensz praised the project, teachers and leadership team for an outstanding job.

By Elsie Walker t’s rare that someone can say they’ve hosted a party that’s been going on for 35 years. However, Terry Cook of Appleton Productions in Long Valley can say just that. A former automotive journalist and hot rodder, who began manufacturing his own car designs in the late 1990s, Cook’s event started as a car show; but it has transformed into a celebration of the 1950’s. It’s called Lead East and it is known as the world’s biggest ‘50s party. For a few days each year, people can leave the woes of the current days behind them and visit a more carefree time. From classic cars- not only from the ‘50s- to the sounds, sights, and dance of the 50’s, Lead East has it all. Also, this

The Party Goes On At Lead East year, joining in on the time travel fun is Barry Weiss of TV’s “Storage Wars.” Lead East is held at the Parsippany Hilton. This year’s event will opened to spectators Thursday – Sunday, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. About 1,400 classic car, 1974 and earlier, from around the country are expected at this year’s event. However, on Sunday, “will be one big parking lot full of corvettes,” noted Cook. Usually only cars up to the 1970’s would be allowed that day, but this year corvettes of any year, 19532017, will be welcomed. For car enthusiasts, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits will be on hand. He’ll cackle his Swamp Rat 12. Cook explained that means Garlits will rev up the engine and, since there’s no muffler,

car enthusiasts will get the smell and sound they enjoy. Cook will be quick to point out that Lead East is about more than cars and that is what has made it endure. “[It’s the] atmosphere of the 1950’s; the atmosphere is everywhere,” he said. That atmosphere includes music, movies and dances of the era. Some highlights include a pool party with two rockabilly bands plus music on the outdoor and indoor stages on Friday night of the event. On the weekend, there are four stages with live music. On Saturday, that includes Afternoon A Capella with eight great Doo Wap groups. On Sunday, there will be tribute bands to Dion and Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons.

“They are really good,” noted Cook. The opportunities to dance abound including a sock hop and dance party. As it has for 34 of its years, Lead East will include a drive-in theater set-up. Among this year’s offerings are “The Thing from Another World,” a 1951 monster flick with James Arness of “Gunsmoke fame” as the monster, “Them,” a 1954 science fiction bug classic, and a more recent movie (1971), the Steven Spielberg classic, “Duel” with Dennis Weaver. Giving is also part of Lead East. There will be a 50-50 for Make-A-Wish and, as they have for years, the local Toys for Tots will be on hand to collect toys to give needy children at Christmas.

Given the event’s theme, some people may wonder what special guest Barry Weiss has to do with the ‘50s, how he came to be part of this year’s party. “I’ve known Barry for years,” said Cook. Weiss bought the most famous car that Cook ever built: the Scrape 1930 Lincoln Zephyr. “People recognize Barry all the time. He’ll be float-

ing around Lead East Friday and Saturday and sitting down inside for autographs on Sunday from noon – 3 p.m., where people can stand on line to meet him,” said Cook. For Lead East admission cost, daily schedule, and other information, visit its website at leadeast.net or the Lead East Facebook page.

Rolling Thunder Provides Awareness And Helps Veterans In Need

S

By R.E. Wagner end them home! We will not forget!” This is just a handful of statements rising above the steady rumble of passing motorcycles during the demonstrations, community events and charity drives organized across the country by the non-profit organization known as Rolling Thunder. In 1987, former United States Marine Corps Corporal Ray Manzo, U.S. Army Sergeant Major John Holland, Marine First Sergeant Walt Sides, and Sergeant Ted Sampley had lunch together at a diner in Somerville. They were meeting to discuss an unsettling issue that they, as servicemen, felt wasn’t being acknowledged enough in certain military circles. By the end of the meeting, they parted ways with a mission in mind: to bring full accountability for the ‘Prisoners Of War’ and ‘Missing In Action (MIA)’ of all U.S. wars. For Diane Malanga, the secretary of Rolling Thunder’s 3rd Chapter in

New Jersey and an official member for almost a decade, Rolling Thunder’s goal hit close to a place close to her heart. “They were deeply troubled knowing these men and women were forgotten,” explained Malanga, “thinking of their families who have not had a chance to have closure. My father served in World War II and Korea and my son just left for boot camp.” Since World War II, more than 83,000 MIA cases have remained unresolved within military files. An MIA is a casualty classification assigned to combatants and prisoners of war (POW) who are reported missing during wartime. They may have been killed, wounded or captured. If deceased, neither their remains nor grave site have been positively identified. For these four veterans, 83,000 unaccounted soldiers left overseas on distant battlefields was an outrage. “They said we have to take a stand and do something to raise awareness,” Malanga continued.

On May 29, 1988, Corporal Manzo recruited 2,500 men and women from all over the nation to attend Rolling Thunder’s first public event held in Washington D.C. There, they assembled peacefully in the parking lot of the Pentagon and rode through the Capital on a predetermined route that led them to the Lincoln Memorial. Since then, Rolling Thunder has grown into an established national organization. During their most recent rally in 2017, almost a million people attended to show their patriotism. And with approximately 10,000 active members spread out across the country among 94 chapters in 33 states, Rolling Thunder has no plans on slowing down. The non-profit’s rosters are filled not only with veterans and active duty military personal, but their families, friends and those who seek to honor the soldiers who never made it home. In New Jersey alone, there are four Rolling Thunder chapters consisting of hundreds of members. The Garden State

Six Ways To Help Prevent Bullying

P

utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive. Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part. 1. Don’t be a bystander. It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up. But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life. 2. Stop sibling bullying at home. You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there. 3. Enlist the help of adults. If you see a need for increased adult supervision at highrisk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult. 4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bullying banner and use social media to advertise the

fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence. 5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop. 6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying. Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully. Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

Rolling Thunder... continued from page 10 “There were snacks and karaoke, the veterans just loved it. The music, the visit, was so awesome for them.” Malanga reminisced, “One of the most rewarding parts of being a member is making the difference for a veteran. I was hooked from that moment.” In addition to raising awareness of their mission statement to bring home missing soldiers, Rolling Thunder Chapters across the nation provide financial support to help veterans in need. “At times our aging veterans struggle to pay bills,” Malanga explained.

“We help with money to pay for heating and have also helped many Veterans with rent or mortgage payments. Last year, Chapter Three raised approx. $24,000 through various events, rides, personal donations and fundraising.” Through charitable donations, as well as organizing community events for service men and women, Rolling Thunder Chapters are known to host events at hospitals and nursing homes like picnics and pizza parties for Veterans. An annual program known as Christmas Families is held where New Jersey Rolling Thunder Chapter members provide gift cards from

Shoprite, Walmart and Toy- R-Us to help Veterans during the holidays. Although primarily known for their roaring motorcades and biker persona, Rolling Thunder encourages anyone with a passion to pay respects to service men and women to volunteer their time or donating to the cause. Interested in donating or volunteering? Contact a local Rolling Thunder Chapter to learn more, or write to the National Headquarters located in Lebanon at P.O. Box 216 Neshanic Station, N.J., 08853.

Lake Hopatcong Film Festival To Salute Abbott and Costello

mong the many celebrities who frequented the Lake Hopatcong area during the height of its popularity as a resort community was Bud Abbott, just prior to teaming with Lou Costello to form arguably America’s most popular and successful comedy team of the 1940s and ‘50s. The comedy of Abbott and Costello will be brought back to life at a film festival hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum on Fri., Sept. 8, and Sat., Sept. 9, at the historic Palace Theatre in Netcong. “Because of Lake Hopatcong’s unique status as a resort, there were many entertainers and other interesting people who visited

or summered here,” said Marty Kane, president of the LHHM. “Over the past several years we’ve presented programs on such former residents and visitors as Lotta Crabtree, Joe Cook, Owen McGiveney and Thomas Edison.” The weekend event will feature three classic Abbott and Costello movies. “Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein” will be shown Fri., Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. A double feature, with “The Time of Their Lives” and “Hold That Ghost” will be shown Sat., Sept. 9, at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., respectively. 1948’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” is one of their most successful films, prompting four subsequent monster-meeting productions.

“The Time of Their Lives,” from 1946, features ghosts in a post-Revolutionary War romance. “Hold That Ghost,” released in 1941, was inspired by the duo’s moving-candle routine, which critics widely considered their best. Despite the duo’s past status, Kane noted, “Abbott and Costello’s fame has faded, with today’s youth being generally less familiar with their work. We hope to change that with this film festival.” Chris Costello, the daughter of Lou Costello, will be on hand Saturday evening to talk about family life with her father, field questions from the audience and sign memorabilia. “Chris Costello was very receptive to the idea

when we contacted her last summer,” said Kane. “She mentioned, right away, how many Abbott & Costello fans live in this area, so we’re looking forward to her visit.” A live performance of the classic “Who’s on First” sketch will also be staged Saturday evening by professional Abbott &

Costello impressionists Gil Palmer and Lou Sciara, who have been mimicking the comedy duo’s most popular routines for nearly 25 years. The Saturday event will be at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Separate-admission movie tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $10, $5 for children under

elenium is a trace mineral that can be very potent in cancer prevention. According to Susan G. Komen, selenium helps antioxidants work more effectively and may reduce cancer incidence as a result. Morris Co. Residents Urged To Keep Bags Out Of Recycling

he Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority is urging county residents to keep all types of plastic bags out of the recycling content they put at the curb for recycling collection, stressing that plastic bags are a major hindrance to recycling operations. Plastic bags are one of the worst contaminants in the recycling process, on a list of unwanted materials that also includes scrap metal, wires, hazardous waste, chemicals, diapers, syringes, needles, propane tanks and hangers. None of these items should be included with curbside recyclables since they can hurt employees and disable machinery.

However, plastic bag contamination is especially troublesome because it causes the Morris County MUA’s recycling system to shut down several times a day. The plastic bags wrap around rotating axles, wheels and disks of the MUA’s mechanical sorting and processing system, bringing the system to a halt. “When the machines are silent, production stops and the receiving lines back up, resulting in a reduction in recycling processing efficiency, safety and the value of recyclables, while labor costs go up,’’ said MUA Recycling Specialist Chris Vidal. “At times, plastic bags slip through the sorting

process and wind up in the paper bales,’’ said Vidal. “Since plastic, obviously, is not paper, it is a major contaminant of paper bales and can lead to the paper being unmarketable and, therefore, not recycled.’’ So, what to do with plastic bags? They can be recycled at select supermarkets and stores. The bags, including supermarket-type plastic bags and bread, newspaper, dry cleaning and other plastic bags, must be empty, clean, and free of moisture or food when recycled at these locations. For more information about single-stream recycling, visit the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority’s website at www.MCMUA.com.

Thomas Edison National Park Creates Economic Boom For West Orange

A

By Jennifer Walkup recent report from the National Park Service revealed that Thomas Edison National Historic Park’s nearly 58 thousand visitors in 2016 spent $3.4 million dollars in communities local to the park. “Thomas Edison National Park welcomes visitors from both the community as well as from across the country and the world,” said Superintendent Thomas Ross. “People typically spend a few hours here at the park, and then often in the community after leaving, which can include spending money for food, lodging, gas or at retail stores. Park employees also spend in the local community. All of these circumstances have a positive economic benefit on the community.” Along with the monetary benefit, this spending also has a positive impact by supporting jobs in the local area. According to the study, the community spending by visitors to the Thomas Edison National Park supports 44 local jobs and has a cumulative benefit of 4.7 million dollars to the local economy. “Because of the additional local spending and overall increase in visitors to the area, Thomas Edison Park visitors supports 44 new jobs across various sectors of the economy,” Ross said. “These jobs would not exist without our park visitors. National park tourism is a significant driver in the national economy, returning $10 for every $1 invested in the National Park Service. We appreciate our West Orange community partnerships and are glad to help support the local economy

along the downtown Main Street corridor and beyond.” The visitor spending analysis was conducted by economists Catherine Cullinane Thomas of the U.S. Geological Survey and Lynne Koonz of the National Park Service. According to the report, most victors spending fell in the categories of lodging, food and beverages, gas and oil, admissions and fees, souvenirs and other expenses, and local transportation. “Many people don’t realize that in addition to preserving and protecting national heritage and the country’s natural spaces for this and future generations, National Parks also provide economic benefit on both a community and state level. The parks are not just for visiting. There is a vital component that has a significant impact on our local economy,” Ross said. More information on the report can be found by using the interactive tool available on The NPS Social Science Program web site (go.nps.gov/vse). Here, users can view current year visitor spending, jobs, labor income, value added and output effects by sector for national, state, and local economies as well as yearby-year trend data. The re-

port includes data for visitor spending at both individual parks and by state. Thomas Edison National Historical Park is dedicated to promoting understanding and appreciation of the life and extraordinary achievements of Thomas Edison by preserving, protecting, and interpreting the Park’s extensive historic artifact and archive collections at the Edison Laboratory Complex and Glenmont, the Edison family estate. The site preserves the last and largest of Edison’s laboratories, home of the perfected phonograph, motion pictures, the nickel-iron alkaline storage battery, and other products. The museum collection, one of the largest in the National Park Service, has more than 400,000 artifacts including Edison products, laboratory equipment, and personal belongings of the Edisons. The Edison Archives contains an estimated five million documents, 48,000 sound recordings, 10,000 rare books, 4,000 laboratory notebooks and 60,000 photographic images, among the largest collections in the National Park Service. Glenmont, the 29-room mansion built in 1880 is the Edison estate in nearby Llewellyn Park, West Orange.

Little Green Thumbs Grow In Roxbury

R

oxbury’s youngest population had a chance this summer to watch their hard work grow into delicious fruits and vegetables in the Roxbury Community School’s Garden Club. The club, for children in preschool through fourth grade at Kennedy and Nixon School, was a hands-on camp that allowed children

to learn gardening basics, techniques and practical skills for gardening in the spring and summer. Participants harvested lettuce and other vegetables to bring home to their families. When they weren’t working in the garden, they were working on small projects to add to the garden, like painted rocks and scarecrows.

he unveiling of the first trail blazes on the new September 11th National Memorial Trail, a 1,300-mile Morris County tribute to first responders and victims of the 9/11 attacks, was held last month in Randolph in memory of the county’s 63 victims in the 2001 attacks. Officials of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance, in conjunction with the Morris County Park Commission, held a ceremony to show off the new blazes on a section of Morris County’s Patriot’s Path, which serves as part of the route of the national trail. Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, Morris County Freeholder Director Doug Cabana, Park Com-

Morris County’s National Memorial Trail Unveiled mission President Betty Cass-Schmidt, Randolph Mayor Christine Carey and Sheriff James Gannon were among the dignitaries who participated in the event. “Our vision for both this alliance and the memorial trail is to unite fellow Americans, trail enthusiasts, organizations, and the families of those lost in the attacks, and work together to make this a reality,” said Andy Hamilton, president of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance. “The trail is shaped as a triangle to forever connect these locations, and serves as a symbol of resiliency and character,” said David Brickley, founder and president emeritus of the September 11th National Me-

morial Trail Alliance. Beginning in 2004, the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance was formed to establish a memorial trail that links both the planned and existing memorial sites dedicated to September 11th, including the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93 Memorial. The board currently consists of 12 members, each with their own unique tie to the cause. In addition to linking the three national memorials, the continuous trail also passes through more than 50 landmarks, such as the Eastern Continental Divide, Delaware Water Gap, and Morristown National Historical Park. It is accessible to automobiles, hikers and bikers.

By Cheryl Conway un separately for almost 65 years, two non-profit agencies plan to merge as one to prepare for the future and continue to provide quality programs. The Mental Health Association of Essex County in Montclair and the Mental Health Association of Morris County in Mountain Lakes plan to unite as one non-profit agency serving both counties effective Aug. 1. The new organization will operate as the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Inc., serving currently about 1,800 clients. With shifts in funding and cuts in Medicaid in the forecast, agency officials

Area Mental Health Agencies Plan Merger To Continue Services To Local Community

decided that merging the two agencies would be the best option without having to provide less to its clients that utilize services regarding mental health. “No two organizations could be closely aligned in regards to our vision, our values, our mission,” says MHAEC Executive Director Robert N. Davison for the past 18 years. Davison will continue as president and CEO of the new association. “This merger is something that makes absolute sense for all parties involved in that it takes two strong, viable, community-based agencies and unites them into a single entity with even greater capacity to serve individ-

uals and families in our communities whose lives are affected by mental illness,” says Davison. “By joining forces and combining resources, this new, cross-county association will represent a ‘whole’ that is truly greater than the sum of its parts; as they say, measured twice and cut once.” Discussions about joining forces began about six months ago by Louis A. Schwarcz, outgoing president and CEO of the MHAMC. The idea was brought to the boards on Feb. 27, confirms Davison. Schwarcz identified ‘the best interests of all concerned’ as his reason for initiating the transition into a single agency, as

stated in a press release. “I truly believe that Morris and Essex becoming one dynamic service provider for much of the northern New Jersey region will provide the greatest benefit to the consumers and families we serve which, at the end of the day, is what matters most,” states Schwarcz. “The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris will represent strength, stability, and greater collective capacity for our staff, our volunteers and our supporters to advance our shared mission well into the foreseeable future.” Both boards agreed on the merger in April and signed an agreement on April 27, says Davison.

Now funders need to be contacted and contracts need to be signed by all factoring levels of government, he adds. “What matters most to both of our associations is that the needs of our community’s most vulnerable populations are met in a compassionate, dignified manner,” says Davison. “That commitment will continue and thrive as we move forward and help the diverse constituents we serve make progress along their journey to wellness and recovery, which is the cornerstone of both of our origins and our new partnership.” Combining as one agency is the best option “in order to maintain ser-

vices through consumers and their families,” says Davison. Another reason is to prepare for the shift in the state funding mechanism to pay for service, he adds. The agencies are projected to receive less money for administrative support. Three administrative positions will be cut as the agencies streamline for the merger, says Davison. A third reason for the merger is to be ready for the proposed cuts in Medicaid suggested by the federal government’s Medical Health Care Act. If the policy is approved by the House of Representatives, the proposal is to cut Medicaid by $880 billion in the continued on page 29

Agencies Plan Merger... continued from page 28 nation and $31 billion in New Jersey over the next 10 years, explains Davison. NJ’s public mental health programs are funded through Medicaid, with the majority of their funding from the NJ Department of Human Services . “We feel a duty to do it now [merge] to maintain critical services to our families and clients,” says Davison. As a result of the merger, administration will be streamlined but services

will stay the same, says Davison. Both agencies provide similar programs and core services are the same. The MHAEC has been providing services to individuals suffering from severe and persistent mental illness as well as a whole range of other behavioral health challenges since it was established in 1950. It currently provides service to about 1,000 clients. The MHAMC, which was founded in 1953, has been providing similar

programs and services to about 800 consumers. Once merged, the two offices will remain open and continue to function in both counties, at separate locations. The plan is to continue “looking to maintain what we are currently doing,” says Davison. It is “hoping to expand services in each county,” in the future. To learn more about the programs and the agency, call (973) 509-9777 in Essex County; or (973) 3343496 in Morris County.

Agency Seeks Help Getting Homeless On Road To Success

F

amily Promise of Morris County, a social service provider of housing, job training, employment assistance and health assistance to the area’s homeless, has launched its “Keys to Housing Program” Campaign. The agency was awarded new permanent housing vouchers from the Department of Community Affairs, which cover the cost of rent for 15 prospective tenants, but not the initial one-time costs of $3,000 or more for additional expenses. The tenants may need

realtor fees, moving costs, storage and clean up costs, inspection fees, among other costs that are not covered. This unique Morris County program helps families and individuals build a sustainable community by addressing job training, employment, financial literacy, physical and mental health, child care and legal issues to obtain safe, affordable, permanent housing. “We are prioritizing the immediate need of stable housing, as it is a critical milestone in achieving the ultimate goal of self-suf-

ficiency,’’ said Executive Director Joann Bjornson, LSW. “We help locate, obtain, and retain permanent housing for our families and individuals and act as a liaison between clients and landlords to make safe, affordable housing a win-win situation for tenants and landlords.” The goal of the campaign is to raise $60,000 to house up to 15 families, many of whom are ready to be housed and whose vouchers expire Sept. 30.
