Roxbury High Gymnastics Flips Over Undefeated Record in 2019 Regular Season

By Megan Roche he girls that make up the Roxbury High School Gael Gymnastics team certainly have something to flip about; they are the first gymnastics team in school history to go undefeated through the regular season with a final record of 10-0.

Roxbury gymnastics first competitive season was in 2018 after a group of parents and interested students lobbied the school board to begin a competitive program at the high school level. The current team is made up of two freshman, five sophomores, two juniors, and three seniors. The three seniors, Megan Merola, Tiffany Zieba, and Ashley Miller, all serve as captains of the team.

“Just being on this amazing gymnastics team meant so much to me, being a captain meant even more. I have been so proud of the support that all the girls give each other. We have built a second family who will always be there for each other on or off the mat. I have seen that no matter your skill level every girl on this team is equally important because each girl contributes a vital part that’s makes up the positive dynamic that resulted in our undefeated season.”

Coach Kellie Damelio, in her first season as head coach of Gaels gymnastics, couldn’t be prouder of her team and the strength

and perseverance they showed this season.

Damelio has a laid-back coaching style and credits her gymnasts for pushing themselves during practice.

“It’s really nice to see the girls grow. I’m happy to see them a little bit scared but pushing themselves to try new skills and tricks. They practice and practice and all of a sudden it all comes together and it’s one of those amazing moments,” Damelio said.

The team started off their season in a meet against Passaic Valley High School with a final score of 103.375. As the season continued on, the girls kept beating their team high scores at almost every meet, notching their largest win of the year against Randolph High School with a final team score of 106.4.

“Our win against Mount Olive was really exciting. When we realized we won by a tenth of a point, even the girls who didn’t compete were happy.” Alexis Merola said.

While their record on NJ.com shows one loss, it’s simply one giant misunderstanding. During a meet against Indian Hills, when the Roxbury team arrived, they found that another school was present. Since Roxbury had already participated in their one required tri-meet for the season, they were confused as to why another team was present at their meet with Indian Hills. After much discussion at the NJSIAA and athletic

director level, it was decided that the other team could count it as a win, but Roxbury did not have to count it as a loss.

“I think we became really close this year as a team and we’re always like a family.

We were really worked up at first with that particular meet. As a captain, I really had to talk to the girls and we realized as a team

that we really had to calm each other down and handle the situation and we handled it together.” Miller said.

On Oct. 22, the Gaels rocked their meet at League B championships, placing first by over 3 points. Zieba also had much to celebrate as she won the gold for the all around continued on page 2

“I started gymnastics at the age of 10 which is late for a gymnast. I’ve grown up so much through this sport and all the lessons I’ve learned have helped me so much through life. I’ve been able to look forward to something after school. Winning at leagues made me so happy and the best thing was being able to have my team there to cheer me on as I accomplished what I wanted to.” Zieba said.

Throughout the season, various girls on the team qualified to compete at sectionals in early November. On Nov. 2, Madison Hansen competed on beam, Morgan Valdes competed in the all around, Alexis Merola competed on vault, beam, and floor exercise, Katie Parr competed on vault, uneven bars, and beam, Megan Merola competed in the all around, and Tiffany Zieba competed in the all around. The Roxbury High School Gymnastics team also qualified to compete as a team at sectionals, winning the sectional title with Mount Olive placing second and Pascack in third.

“High school gymnastics is a whole dif-

ferent feel than club gymnastics. I have been a club gymnast for a long time but I still get really nervous before my meets, but the team has been so supportive.” Valdes said.

Athletic Director Stu Mason couldn’t be prouder of his young gymnastics team. He knows what these girls go through at practice daily and he is always impressed with their dedication to their sport and their school.

“Whether you are playing field hockey, football, or competing as a gymnast, there are always expectations for each program.

Our gymnastics program has really represented and embodied every challenge in their way. They are everything we want Gaels to be and represent. To have these girls wearing blue and gold is an outstanding fete and even better, they are all outstanding young ladies on top of that.” Mason said.

A

Not All Headaches are Created Equal

lmost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Headaches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side effects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?” Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preservatives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus congestion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. Five patients suffering “headaches” may receive five completely different treatments. By addressing the root cause, Acupuncture can be a safe way to prevent and treat various types of headaches, without the unwanted side effects of medications.

Based on the individual assessment and diagnosis, tiny needles are inserted into various points on the body. Depending on the case, small electrodes can be attached to specific needles that elicit a small electrical current. The feeling of the electric stimulation on the needles is a comfortable sensation that generally elicits a feeling of tingling, tapping or heaviness. The electric stimulation en-

Will Democrats in 2020 Again ‘Fall in Love’?

here are large historical differences between America’s two major political parties in how they choose their presidential nominees.

Consider this: Since 1952, there have been 11 presidential elections where there wasn’t a Republican president running for reelection. In 10 of those 11, the Republican candidate who led in the major polls in the year before the election went on to win the presidential nomination.

The lone exception -- ironically, given today’s headlines -- was former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who inexplicably chose to skip the first 2008 tests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to stumble into Florida and withdraw from the race.

Another tradition of GOP voters (which they disregarded in 2016 when nominating now-President Donald Trump) has been to nominate the candidate whose “turn it was.” Republican voters resembled the pattern of the local Rotary Club, where last year’s recording secretary was promoted to this year’s club vice president on the way to becoming next year’s club president -- orderly and predictable.

Remember 1976: Former California Gov. Ronald Reagan challenged the sitting Republican president, Gerald R. Ford, and came within a whisker of winning the nomination. So whose turn was it in 1980? You guessed it: Reagan’s. And who finished second to Reagan in 1980?

George H.W. Bush, that’s who. And in 1988, it was Bush’s turn; he won the nomination over Sen. Bob Dole.

So the next time there was an open GOP nomination, in 1996, the choice was the 1988 runner-up: Dole. Sen. John McCain, who finished second to Gov. George W Bush in the 2000 primaries, succeeded him as the 2008 stan-

Mark Shields dard-bearer by defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who -- you guessed it -- would become the Republican presidential nominee four years later.

Democrats have been far less predictable and, seemingly, more emotional in selecting their presidential standard-bearers. While Republican voters, until quite recently, have predictably “fallen in line” by promoting the most recent runner-up, Democrats instead seem to want to “fall in love.” Democrats have a marked preference for the “new face” over those who have run before.

Examples of this pattern include Barack Obama, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Michael Dukakis and George McGovern -- all of whom were nominated as first-time candidates.

In 2016, Democrats broke the pattern by choosing Hillary Clinton, who had lost the nomination to Obama in 2008, over Bernie Sanders, then a first-time aspirant.

ho is funding the militant illegal immigrant youth army of thousands of entitled “Dreamers” that marched to Washington, D.C., for the Supreme Court hearing this week on President Barack Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty program?

Follow the money; find the truth.

I’ve got the “Open Borders Inc.” breakdown for you of so-called DACA financiers and enablers on both sides of the political spectrum. Call them what they are: the “American Students Last” lobby.

Let’s start with Charles Koch. The libertarian billionaire has thrown his weight and fortune behind an amnesty brigade called the LIBRE Initiative.

While the establishment right purports to oppose identity politics, LIBRE wraps itself in the mantle of “empowering Hispanics” to “advance liberty” and “prosperity.” Koch has poured more than $10 million into the ethnocentric group since 2011 under the slogan “Limited Government. Unlimited Opportunity.”

Translation: driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, in-state tuition discounts for illegal immigrant students and securing a Congressional deal to codify the Obama administration’s blanket deportation shields and work permits for 800,000 illegal immigrant students if the Supreme Court strikes the deal down.

Koch operatives send out weekly press releases urging Congress to “Protect Dreamers Now,” “Achieve a permanent solution for Dreamers” (hint: It’s not deportation), and “act promptly on relief for Dreamers.” Along with the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity, LIBRE sponsored a “pop-up art exhibit” propagandizing the benefits of illegal immigrant Dreamers to coincide with their march on Washington on Tuesday.

Michelle Malkin Next up: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Big Business lobbyists for cheap labor have prioritized illegal immigrant amnesty legislation since 2014, when the Chamber dumped $50 million to protect border-jumpers from deportation and win them employment authorization documents. “Stripping DACA recipients of their ability to legally live and work in the country will harm them,” the D.C. fat cats lamented this week.

Then there’s Facebook. All week long, young users of the Silicon Valley giant’s Instagram app have been fed heart-tugging ads highlighting Dreamer families and their activist sisters and brothers, including the George Soros-funded street demonstrators of United We Dream, Make the Road New York and CASA de Maryland. Facebook’s lobbying arm, FWD.us, disseminated a letter from 10 of its illegal immigrant Dreamer employees “in solidarity with” all immigrants living and working here in violation of our laws. FWD.us has shelled out $430,000 on immigration continued on page 6

Leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops convened masses at the border to condemn patriots who use the accurate term “invasion” to describe the violent siege in the Southwest.

Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles pledged that “we will never abandon you” and enlisted American churchgoers to pray for illegal immigrant families.

Such virtue-signaling gestures have never been extended to American families permanently separated from their children and grandchildren because of criminal-coddling sanctuary policies and porous fences, of course.

Microsoft and Princeton University jointly filed the Supreme Court briefs on behalf of Dreamers suing for the right to stay here illegally. Princeton also lobbied on Capitol Hill to extend the endless “temporary protected status” and work permits of 300,000 low-wage workers from Central America. Microsoft has punched American students twice in the gut, leading the charge not only for a massive pipeline of illegal immigrant youths but also for millions of H-1B and F-1 foreign student visa holders.

Even The New York Times now acknowledges the obvious reason Democrats are throwing American youth under the bus: mass uncontrolled immigration both legal and ille-

gal is turning America radically blue. But what about Beltway Republicans and establishment Swamp conservative think tanks and college groups? Where is the defense of American students fighting to make a decent living while competing with unrelenting floods of foreign workers at both ends of the wage scale?

Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk blithely advocates stapling green cards to foreign student diplomas and his speakers have shouted down America First students as racists and losers for challenging the donor class on demographic realities. (Who needs SPLC smear merchants with “friends” like these?) Shamefully, no right-leaning groups bothered to muster up their own army of American students to counter the Koch-Soros-Silicon Valley-Vatican-backed hordes on the Mexifornicated steps of the U.S. Supreme Court. The job of combating the American Students Last lobby has been left to anti-establishment outsiders -- Proud Boys, Groypers, displaced U.S. tech workers and other dissidents unmasking Open Borders Inc.’s controlled opposition.

On Tuesday, I was called a “Nazi” by a young GOP operative for supporting American students first.

Keep shooting the messengers, civilizational suicide squad clowns. If the goal is to make America disappear, you’re winning.

The Versatility of Dental Implants

Many people think of a dental implant as a replacement for a single tooth, or that you need to replace multiple missing teeth with one implant per tooth. This is not always correct: sometimes you can replace a full jaw of missing or damaged teeth with just four dental implants! Keep reading to learn more.

Let’s start with a single missing tooth. It is logical to replace that one missing tooth with just one dental implant. Now, increase that region to 3 missing teeth. You can definitely place 3 implants with 3 “crowns” or “caps” onto each implant, but you can also place two dental implants and suspend three crowns off of those two dental implants.

This is called a “bridge.” There are benefits to replacing each of those three missing teeth with three individual dental implants, but if you’re looking to keep costs low, then a bridge will help accomplish that.

What if you’re missing most teeth, but have a few very strong ones remaining? The traditional way of replacing those missing

teeth is with a “removable partial denture.”

This is an appliance you take in and out of your mouth that has the missing teeth on it.

Depending on the location of those “anchor teeth,” your denture may be very stable.

However, sometimes the denture is loose.

Dental implants can help to provide additional stability for that denture, increasing your chewing power and confidence. Sometimes the dental implants can even help to eliminate the unsightly clasps that are needed to help retain the denture!

When a person is missing all of their teeth in one (or both) of their jaws, a “full” or “complete” denture is the most common way to help out. Again, these are removable: when you go to bed at night, you take your teeth out and put them in a glass of water. Dental implants can do one of two things in this case: 1) increase the amount of retention to that removable denture so your chewing power is increased, along with an increase in your confidence, or 2) eliminate the removable teeth all-together, so you don’t have to take the teeth out anymore.

Read on for details: In the first scenario, anywhere from two to six dental implants are placed to allow your denture to “snap” onto the dental implants. You still have a removable denture which means the teeth come in and out, but

One Man Can Make a Difference in Many Ways

ichael Kambourakis, the owner of Terzako Furs on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell recently spoke at the United Nations. He was invited as a humanitarian and discussed his work in the Dominican Republic with the help of private funding. For many years Mike was concerned about a small area that had been severely damaged due to a hurricane. He told the United Nations how he worked to build a clinic in the Dominican Republic by raising money and actually being almost the general contractor on the job. After the Clinic was built, he was responsible for raising the funds needed to build medical housing on the premises to allow doctors from the United States availability to go down to the clinic and take care of patients for brief periods of time.

An important part of the presentation was how one can accomplish more and faster privately, rather than going through time prolonged by federal government approvals. In 5 years time, the clinic and dorms were completed. Mike’s fellow Rotarians helped with the fundraising and putting the finishing touches on the latest addition, an outdoor dining facility. The clinic has been in operation since its grand opening in November 2017. Many diabetes missions have taken place and the dental office is now complete.

This whole project started when Mike heard about

the lack of clean water, school supplies and many other necessities in the Dominican Republic. He went there to see firsthand about the conditions. He decided he needed to help. That was the beginning of a labor of love which he continues and envisions even more. He is amazing and proves that one man can make a difference in many lives.

Mike started this in a small way and began to collect items that he shipped or personally brought to the community. On his numerous trips to the Dominican Republic his luggage consisted of school supplies, clothing, tooth brushes, and medical supplies. He collected items from his clients, businesses in the area and numerous other places and shipped them personally to aid the people of the Dominican Republic. Since the nearest clinic for medical care was very far away, Mike came up with the idea to build a clinic.

Mike is truly an inspiration.

The United Nations heard about his unbelievable work, and asked him to speak there to inspire other individuals on how they can do their own projects to help people who are in dire need of the basic things in life.

Freeholders Honor Marine Corps on 244th Anniversary

he Morris County Board of Freeholders is honoring the United State Marine Corps on its 244th birthday, celebrating the founding of the Marines by the Continental Congress in 1775.

The Marine Corps Birthday is marked each year on Nov. 10 with traditional ball and cake-cutting ceremonies held at locations across the nation.

Here in Morris County, the Freeholder Board highlighted the occasion at its recent Veterans’ Day event on Oct. 23 in remarks made by Freeholder and Marine Corps veteran John Krickus.

In addition, the freeholders held a special recognition ceremony for Marine Corps veteran Emerson Cooks of Randolph, as a representative of all Marines.

“We would like to call attention to one particular Marine who served his country with honor on the battlefield, and in civilian life has offered exemplary service to his state and county,’’ said Freeholder John Krickus.

“Marine Corps veteran Emerson Crooks of Randolph is being honored for his outstanding service to his country in Vietnam and steadfast support of all veterans. It is most fitting to honor this decorated Marine on the 244th birthday of the USMC.’’

Mr. Crooks served as a Marine from 1968-1972. For that service, he received the Legion of Merit and a Valor Designation for heroism.

As a civilian, he has been a strong advocate for veterans -- at Lyons VA Hospital and through other veterans’ organizations -- and he is vice president of North Jersey Stand Down, which reaches out to homeless veterans.

In addition, he is an advocate on behalf of juveniles in the court system and an advocate for residents who suffer mental illness, through his efforts for the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties.

“Emerson Crooks, in his military and civilian lives, always has proudly lived up to Marine Corps standards,’’ said Freeholder Krickus in presenting him with a special county resolution.

On 10 November 1775, the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Marines. Congress commissioned 31-year-old Samuel Nicholas, a well-known Philadelphian, as captain of the fledgling force of Continental Marines.

From Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Nicholas raised two battalions of Marines as

directed and began the long illustrious history of the United States Marine Corps, which now has is 190,000 active duty personnel strong, with deployments across the world.

Every year since 1925 the founding of the Marine Corps has been celebrated with a Birthday Ball. It is one of the biggest social events of the year for leathernecks

all over the world.

The Marine Corp’s birthday cake-cutting ceremony is important to all Marines, as it is an annual renewal of each Marine’s commitment to the Corps.

The Story of Chanukah

t’s Chanukah and in Israel and in many places around the world Jews are lighting candles in their window as night falls. They’re adding a little light to the world and reminding everyone of the miracles that happened to their ancestors so long ago.

Over two thousand years ago, the Jews of Israel were ruled by the Greek conquerors of Syria. Antiochus, the Greek king, wanted all of his subjects to live like Greeks so he made laws prohibiting Jews to practice their

religion by forbidding the study of the Torah or keeping the mitzvot. The Jews revolted and had a whole army fighting the Greeks.

After many long years, the Jews finally threw the Greek army out of the country. The first thing they did as soon as they conquered Jerusalem was to rededicate their Temple (Chanukah means “dedication”.) When they tried to light the menorah, all they could find was enough oil to last them for one day. To make more oil would have taken at least

a week – eight days more likely. A miracle happened and the little jar of oil burned for eight days.

Ever since then, Jews have celebrated the victory over the Greeks during the holiday of Chanukah. On the first night we light one candle, on the second night we light two candles, and so on. By the eighth night we have eight candles burning brightly, reminding us of the eight days that the oil burned in the Temple and of the Jewish struggle against oppression.

“Pirsumei nisa” or publicizing the miracle is a very important custom on Chanukah.

We light the candles in a window or by a door facing the street so that everyone passing by will see them and remember the miracles that happened. The special menorah we use on Chanukah is called a “chanukiah” in Hebrew. It has places for eight candles and an extra place for the “shamash” – the candle we use to light all the other candles.

There’s an old custom of giving children gifts of coins on Chanukah. Sometimes the coins are real and sometimes they are made of chocolate (gelt.) Since the miracle of Cha-

nukah happened through a jar of oil, one way to remember the miracle is to eat foods cooked in oil during Chanukah. “Latkes,” or potato pancakes fried to a crispy, golden brown are one popular Chanukah food. “Sufganiyot” or jelly donuts are another as they are also fried in oil.

“Dreidels” are a favorite toy on Chanukah. They are four-sided tops with Hebrew letters painted or carved on the sides. The letters – nun, gimel, heh, and shin stand for the Hebrew words: “Nes gadol hayah sham” (A great miracle happened there.) One way to play dreidel is to spin it for money. Everyone puts a coin or gelt in the pot, then they spin the dreidel to see who wins: nun means nothing – you don’t have to put in another coin and you don’t get anything; gimel means you get everything in the pot; heh means you get half of what is in the pot; and shin means you have to put one into the pot.

In Israel, a dreidel is called a “sevivon.” The sevivon has a “peh” instead of a shin on one side, so that the letters stand for “Nes gadol hayah poh” (A great miracle happened here.)

Roxbury’s 5th Annual Home for the Holidays Annual Street Festival Celebrates History and Tradition

By Dawn M Chiossi n Saturday, December 7th, Roxbury will be all aglow. Their 5th Annual Home for the Holidays Street Festival will transform Main Street in Succasunna and surrounding areas into a holiday wonderland.

For the past five years, the festival has closed off Main Street to traffic so that attendees can fully enjoy all of the festivities.

Roxbury’s Event Planning Team Member, Michele O’Halloran describes the event as a street festival/ block party. Yet for the people of Roxbury, it is so much more than that. Spilling out to the inside of the Roxbury Public Library and the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, it is a much-anticipated tradition.

One that not only envelops people in the festivity, it also celebrates the community spirit of the town.

So far, over an impressive 2,000 people are expected to attend.

Sponsored and planned by Roxbury Township and their Main Street Streetscaping Committee, O’Halloran tells that the brainstorm for Home for the Holidays Street Festival began as an idea to show

off the quaint, old-fashioned town of Roxbury. “The festival was organized in December of 2015 by the committee as a way to bring the community to the main street to celebrate and enjoy the newly installed Victorian-style town clock, lamp posts, and brick-edged sidewalks,” she says.

Roxbury’s Sue Anderson agrees. As one of the original members of Roxbury’s Streetscaping Committee, she and the rest of the members wanted to do something that would emphasize how nice the main street was. Anderson relates that the Home for the Holidays Street Festival idea came from a member for Roxbury to do something similar to Lake Mohawk’s German Christmas.

For Anderson, it was an idea that not only clicked but was inspirational.

As a woman with a life long love of her hometown and history (Anderson is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Historical Society, and is actively involved in the historic Presbyterian Church) the idea was a perfect merging of her two passions.

“I’ve lived my whole life in Roxbury Township,” Anderson enthuses. “Did you

know it was founded in 1740? I’m so proud. It’s a wonderful place to live, with so much to offer.”

Anderson likens the Home for the Holidays Festival to a winter Olde Succasunny Day, an event that Roxbury holds in September. Stating that Roxbury has always been a place that attracted families, she relishes how the Victorian-Style Christmas will give attendees a chance to chat, interact, and get to know others. “I

love that the festival showcases so much of Roxbury.” Anderson prides. “So many people don’t always know what is here in their own town or think that it costs a lot of money to become involved in things. It doesn’t. The festival really opens up the various community groups and organizations to everyone, letting them know what is going on, and what they have to offer.”

Capturing the nostalgic feel-good ambiance of the season, there will be many festive delights to enjoy including: Santa, jingle-belled horses and carriage rides-complete with costumed carriage drivers, festive music, dancing, food trucks, and approximately 85 vendors for people to check out unique and handcrafted gifts for that essential holiday shopping.

There will be many returning favorites: Strolling carolers from Roxbury High School’s Classic Sounds Honors Choir, the children’s choir from Morris County Educare who will sing holiday songs in the gazebo by the library (something O’Halloran is looking forward to seeing), Irish Step Dancers dancing a lively jig, live music from the Roxbury Community Jazz Band, and Roxbury High School Band Ensembles.

The Methodist Church will be having activities for the kids, puppet shows and hot drinks and treats. Attendees are invited to

visit Presbyterian Church for their bakery cafe and purchase homemade goodies, coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Always a hit, the costumed characters of Olaf, Anna and Elsa of Frozen fame will be delighting children to chat and take pictures.

“This is a fun-filled day for families to make holiday memories on Main Street, eat, shop and be merry!” O’Halloran enthuses.

Of all the returning favorites, perhaps the most favorite of all will be Santa himself. When he arrives on the fire truck at noon, he’ll enthusiastically greet the crowd and lead the children into the library for Santa Land. In addition to many delights, don’t forget to have a picture taken with Jolly Old St. Nicholas for a mere $5.00. It’s a fundraiser benefiting Roxbury’s Social Services.

There’s plenty of new events and activities for all to enjoy, and O’Halloran is excited for them all. Among them include tap dancers from the Future STEP Tap Company. For children, there will be a balloon artist setting up a special balloon-decorated photo booth, and there will be face

painting too. As ugly sweaters have swiftly a hilarious gag of the season, the Home for the Holidays event will feature a brand new Ugly Sweater Contest. Not only is it for lots of laughs and fun, but participants may also win prizes.

In addition to some of the returning favorite food trucks to tempt the appetite, attendees will want to try new ones. Taxi Cab Burger will feature gourmet sliders, and Angry Archie’s will feature Lobster Rolls.

“People really love the festival,” O’Halloran shares. “Especially the chance to take a free carriage ride with jingle-belled horses. Many remark about the hometown, family-friendly feel that it has, and how it gets them in a holiday mood.”

Randolph Woman Continues Running Success in Extreme Conditions

By Steve Sears or marathon runner Roberta Groner, no future event will be formidable enough to be any sort of obstacle.

She’ll just rise to the occasion.

“Being a nurse, mother of three boys and elite runner,” she says, “I would like people to know that if you have a passion, go do it. You just never know with hard work, consistency and determination where it may lead!”

The 41-year-old Groner speaks from experience, emphasis on that last word. She was the first American woman marathoner to cross the finish line in 89-degree heat at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar in late September. Overall, Groner finished 6th with a time of 2 hours, 38 minutes and 44 seconds (2:38:44), just six-minutes behind Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya, the winner who clocked in at 2 hours, 32 minutes and 43 seconds (2:32:43).

“After racing at a World Championship in such brutal conditions,” says Groner, “I feel that no matter what the challenges may be for New York City (marathon) or the (2020 United States) Olympic trials, that I will be mentally stronger.”

Groner, who will take part in the before-mentioned events in November 2019 and February 2020 respectively, started running in 7th grade when asked to join the track team by her math teacher, eventually in high school securing a sports scholarship to attend Saint Francis University, running for three years before leaving school in 1999.

She then stopped running for ten years, starting again in 2009 when her youngest son was two. “I had no passion or desire to run. It wasn’t fun anymore. I started running

again in 2009 when I decided to start doing something for me again. After having three kids in 3 1/2 years, it was time to just go run!”

“I decided to start running again just so I could have some quality ‘me’ time” “Quality” it was, which encouraged more competitive outlets. “I ran my first marathon in 2011 in Chicago with a group of friends from Pittsburgh. I was able to qualify for Boston with a 3:12 marathon. From there, the marathon just became my favorite race and challenge.”

Groner moved to New Jersey in 2014 and started running with a Randolph-based group called the Do Runners, then training with fellow club member Beau Atwater. “We trained for NYC 2015 (marathon) where I ran 2:45:30, (and) the following fall I ran a 2:37:54 at Mohawk-Hudson.” She then hired a coach, her goal to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Trials, and she succeeded, placing 2nd at the USATF (United States of America Track & Field) National Championships at the California International Marathon in 2017 with a time of 2:30:36. “After that race, I then wanted to break 2:30.

This past spring I was able to run a 2:29:06 in Rotterdam. I am now only the third American woman over the age of 40 to break 2:30.”

After Rotterdam, Groner was selected to be part of Team USA for the World Championships in Qatar. She was aware of the conditions – and ready. “What an honor to represent our country! We battled extreme heat and humidity in a midnight race. The team prepared us well with PowerPoint presentations by the medical staff. I would run in layers the continued on page 22

Lakeside Tavern Set to Open in Mount Olive

By Megan Roche new restaurant is coming to the Mount Olive area that will offer the best of both seafood and tavern fare. It’s also got quite the view of Budd Lake. Projected to open in early December, Lakeside Tavern will be a new go to spot. It’s convenient location on Route 46 will offer easy access to Route 80, Route 206, and Route 24. The family friendly location will have some incredible sunsets and houses picture windows for all to enjoy.

Budd Lake has been a staple in the Mount Olive community for decades. Budd Lake is the largest natural lake in New Jersey at 374 acres. Formerly known as Hattacawanna Lake, the lake was named for Lt. John Budd who was the first military officer to train a home guard to protect the community against threats. Lt. Budd also owned 1300 acres of land in the area back in 1714. The lake has been home to many families throughout the years, but was an extremely popular summer vacation destination in the 1920’s. Hotels graced the area around the lake, with the most popular ones being the Greene Inn and the Budd Lake Hotel.

As time has passed, the lake has still been a source of recreation for many in the greater Mount Olive communities. The lake is also the source for the south branch of the Raritan River. Budd Lake has a depth of seven to 12 feet and

was created by thousands of years of decaying plant material such as black spruce and tamarack. Budd Lake Beach is a great place to bring family and friends during the summer months.

For Lakeside Tavern and Restaurant Village Hospitality Group owners, Steve and Andrea Bussel, opening and operating a restaurant is no new game for them. The couple also own Long Valley Brew Pub, OMG Burger and Brew, and White Birch, with Chef Sam Freund. White Birch recently

received a liquor license and will be operating a full bar.

“I was successful in the real estate business. I’ve always enjoyed seeing restaurant operations, they have always piqued my interest and as I became successful in the real estate business, I felt that I would try my hand at owning restaurants as well,” Bussel said.

Lakeside Tavern will take be located at the old High Noon location, directly across from the lake. There will be ample parking available. The laidback atmosphere will house a 15-20 seat bar and be family friendly and economical. The owners are also planning on adding a rooftop patio with a full bar. The food at Lakeside Tavern will be predominantly seafood, but also tavern food, such as burgers, wings, and pasta. Monthly specials and the entire menu are still being decided upon, but the end goal is to provide affordable seafood to the greater Mount Olive area. The anticipated opening date is around early December.

Lakeside Tavern is located at 331 Route 46, Budd Lake.

Restaurant hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Lakeside Tavern will be closed on Tuesdays.

3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup peppermint crunch baking chips In stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and salt until smooth. Gradually add flour and mix on low until combined. Add baking chips and continue mixing on low until fully combined.

On wax paper or parchment paper, form dough into 12-14-inch log and freeze at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

Heat oven to 350° F. Cut shortbread dough into 1/4-inch slices; bake 13-15 minutes on parchment-lined baking sheets. (Family Features)

The Perfect Sauce to Pair with a Roast Red Pepper Cranberry Sauce: 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 medium red bell peppers, finely diced 1 cup red wine 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/3 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds 6 tablespoons dried cranberries 6 tablespoons dried currants 1/4 teaspoon salt To make roast: Heat oven to 250 F. Using butcher’s twine, tie roast to maintain shape. Coat all sides with 2 tablespoons canola oil and season with rub.

In medium skillet, heat remaining oil.

Sear all sides of roast 2 minutes each.

Place roast in roasting pan and bake 1 hour, 30 minutes.

To make Red Pepper Cranberry Sauce: Heat medium skillet on medium-high heat.

Add olive oil and diced red pepper; saute 3-5 minutes.

Add red wine, red wine vinegar, sugar,

mustard seeds, cranberries, currants and salt. Bring mixture to boil then turn temperature to low and simmer 20 minutes, or until liquid is mostly evaporated and thickened.

Top each serving of roast with Red Pepper Cranberry Sauce.

Note: Mostarda can be made up to 3 days in advance.

Project Help Collecting Christmas Cards for Vets this Holiday Season

Remembering our heroes in the VA hospital for the holidays

F

or most people the holidays are a time for family and friends but for our war heroes in VA hospitals it can be sad and lonely.

It’s heartbreaking to realize that many of these brave service men and women don’t have family in the area and some have no family at all.

Project Help is ever so aware of this heartbreaking situation. Periodically they visit the Lyons hospital and bring cards from youngsters and treats for the PTSD ward. “The patients love it…they are so happy to see us.

We spend a couple of hours talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. It does my heart good to touch the hearts of many and bring a smile to their faces”, said Sandy Mitchell of Project Help.

As Christmas approaches, the need for personal contact is urgent. Project Help is doing a “Sign a Card” drive for veterans at Lyons hospital. For a donation of your choice, you get to choose a sentiment and have your name signed to the card. All of the cards will be personally delivered to the VA hospital in

December, and given out to the men and women who won’t be home for Christmas.

My own running experience and listening to advice from my coach on pacing, fluid intake, and ice were key points that helped.” Groner, who ran from the beginning with teammate, Carrie Dimoff, ran a “smart race and it paid off. It was such an honor to represent the country, and to place in the top ten in the Worlds will be a highlight of my running career.”

Her current goal is to run the best she

can in the New York City Marathon, possibly placing in the top ten finishers. But you have to feel, based on her words, there’s something more important here. “As long as I try my hardest, I will be happy with the outcome. The training and hard work was put in, so I am happy knowing I am going to the starting line healthy and strong.”

Her favorite quote? Success is a peace of mind knowing you have done your best. “I feel I have done my best with training over the last 12 to 16 weeks and that is the most important.”

My Life Publications Editor Wins Media Award

By Steve Sears y Life Publications editor Megan Roche, who knows much about editing a writer’s work for publication, also is a fine writer in her own right.

In fact, her talent just garnered her an accolade. Roche was named an International Pain Foundation 2019 Hero of Hope Award winner for a January 2019 cover story she wrote about singer and dancer Paula Abdul and her struggles with chronic pain for iPain Living Magazine.

Roche, who won in the “Media-Journalist” category, and four other winners received their awards on November 15 at the Comic Pain Relief show in Los Angeles, CA. The award winners were recognized in the event program and received a trophy.

“It was such an honor just to be nominated with so many other talented media companies and journalists,” says Roche. “To be honest, when the competition for public votes first began, I wasn’t sure I could actually pull it off. I am also someone who is a fierce competitor, so I wasn’t going to let this award go without a fight. When I got the phone call that I had been successful, I really couldn’t believe it. It meant so much to me to have as much public support as I did. I had so many people reaching out to me to let me know that they voted, had friends constantly sharing my link to vote on social media, I consistently asked people for votes, but I could not have done it without the support of all of those who voted. Whether you cast one vote or voted every single day from every single device you own, I am very humbled and very grateful for all your support.”

Roche learned via a received email a few months after article publication that she had been nominated. The months

of July and August were open to public voting, the second year in which the public decided the winner. More than 33,500 public votes were cast, and Roche was her category’s winner with 28.1% of the vote.

Roche explains the background of the article which won her the honor. “I owe this all to someone who has been a part of my life for so many years. When I was 13, I fell in love with American Idol, just like pretty much every other teen at the time. I spent so much time reading up on contestants, learning songs that were sung each week, and I always imagined what it would be like to meet Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul.” Viewing the program led her to take a keen interest in Abdul’s career. “Like any other 13-year-old, I learned as much as I could about her and knew that I wanted to be just like her. When I first met her in 2007, it was a very emotional moment, one that I will never forget.”

In 2018, when Roche learned that Abdul would be headlining at Morristown’s Mayo Center for the Arts, she - at that time a writer for the media outfit she now edits for - pitched the editorial team for the opportunity to interview Abdul.

She scored the interview, but a few days after she had written and submitted the article, Abdul announced that due to production delays, she would not be able to open in Morristown as originally scheduled. Roche then searched for another viable angle and market for the piece. “Knowing that Paula suffers from chronic pain, I approached a charity that she has worked with for years to see if they would be interested in my article. The team at iPain Living Magazine gave me the okay and I reworked it and sent it in to hopefully be approved.” Although a familiar subject, Roche stressed over the process somewhat. “As any reporter will tell you,

I sat up for nights on end agonizing on how I could do this justice. Finally, one day, it all came pouring out of me at 3:00 in the morning. That’s writing in a nutshell. You let it sit and sit and one day it just all makes sense and you are typing away on your keyboard.

You really have to trust the creative process.”

The article received lots of positive praise and, for Roche, was monumental. “When I found out that it was the front-page cover story for iPain Living Magazine for the January quarter, I was floored. Not only did I get to write a cover story on someone who I admire and am inspired by, I was able to also get my very first magazine cover story.”

The evening of the ceremony, Roche walked the orange (orange is the color for chronic pain awareness) carpet and did interviews with media that wanted to talk to her about her advocacy work for those who suffer from chronic pain and chronic illness – not an easy task for a reporter. “I’m so used to being the one who asks the questions, and now the roles are reversed,” she says with a laugh. “I also had to make an acceptance speech in front of a pretty large crowd of people. Getting ready for the event was crazy. It’d been a process of finding a red-carpet style dress, preparing an acceptance speech, and booking travel. I think it completely hit me when I boarded the plane to Los Angeles that this was all really happening.”

Roche credits her support system for giving her the strength. “I feel like I need to use this opportunity to thank so many people. I seriously would not have had the opportunity to represent My Life Publications if it weren’t for the people who took time out of their busy schedules to make sure they voted each day. I was really surprised to see the amount of people who came out to support me. From former high school classmates to elected officials in towns I covered for newspapers when I was just starting out, I was stunned and appreciative to hear of all those who supported me. a shout out to my friends, Ericca Farrington, Alison Wainwright, Stephanie Kahler, and Jenn Merritt for taking time off from work and accompanying me to California to be my support system for when I accepted my award. Roche, who has a Master of Arts with a concentration in Digital Multimedia Journalism from Sacred Heart University, has saved a copy of every article she has ever written.

“I enjoy being able to look back at the earlier articles in my career and remind myself how far I’ve come,” she says. “I treasure some of those very first articles I’ve ever written, and I can’t wait to see what future articles are waiting for me down the road.” She then sits back in thought, then leans forward. “ My career is slowly but surely taking off. I really want to keep sharing people’s stories of success and overcoming adversity. I would also like to start my own podcast where I interview people who have been through some of the toughest times and highlight the fact that even though we can have lows, it really is all about the climb to the top. I would also like to eventually go back to school and earn a second master’s degree in investigative journalism.”

And yes, she indeed has a copy of the Abdul article – in a very special place. “When I brought her a copy of the magazine so she could see it, she loved everything about it.

For me, that approval meant everything. The article that I spent countless nights struggling to write was worth it. She even signed a copy for me and it’s proudly hanging in my bedroom. For me, this really proves that if you dream big, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.”

Former Radio City Rockette Still Shares Joy of Dance

By Megan Roche or some dancers, it’s a dream that most will never see come true. There are few things that help ring in the holiday season, traditions we’ve all been a part of.

There is the floats and balloons that kick off Thanksgiving Day with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center, and of course, those incredible high kicks of the Radio City Rockettes, one of whom comes right from the Morris County area.

Jennifer Jones, a Rockette that began her journey in 1987, hails from Randolph. A proud graduate of Randolph High School and County College of Morris, Jones also holds a special place in the history books as she was the first African American Rockette ever cast.

Jones began dancing early on in life and after studying at numerous local dance schools throughout Northern New Jersey, she moved to New York City and began training at Broadway Dance Center under Jazz dance legend Frank Hatchett.

Jones has been shattering barriers throughout her entire life. In 1987, Jones became the very first African American to join the Radio City Rockettes. Her life goal was to be on Broadway but when she first saw the opportunity to audition for the Rockette’s, she was unsure about attending.

“We would look through Backstage (a

Broadway publication that had auditions listed) and we’d pick things. The Rockette’s were looking to hire for the Super Bowl Halftime Show and the Chita Rivera tour. I woke up on the morning of the audition and just decided to go. I got to the music hall about 9:30 and there were just lines of women wrapped around the building,” Jones shared.

After finally making it inside the music hall, Jones was measured (you must be between 5’6 and 5’10.5 to be a Rockette) and told to provide her headshot and put on her tap shoes. The audition process included a dance combination, eye high kicks, can can kicks, and more. After the audition was over, all the dancers were told they would find out via phone calls if they were receiving call backs or not.

A few days after her audition, national news outlets began covering the story of the first ever African American joining the coveted Rockette line. Jones received many phone calls from family and friends about the newscasts, but she had no idea it was her that all these news stations were talking about.

“They didn’t tell me that I was the first black Rockette, they just offered the Super Bowl to me. I said ‘huh, wonder who that is?’

I got so many calls asking if it was me and I had no idea. It wasn’t until a couple of days later that they told me that it was me.”

Jones’ 15-year tenure on the line was

filled with so many highlights. From performing at the 1988 Super Bowl halftime show, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Easter Spectacular, Comic Relief, Night of 100 Stars, her career was nothing but happy memories. In addition to being a Radio City Rockette, she was also the first black Miss Morris County, crowned in 1989. In 2002, Jones officially hung up her Rockette tap shoes and called it a career.

“There were a lot of different experiences that made it special to be a Rockette. To make history as the first black Radio City Rockette also really got to me. In any of my performances, no matter how tired I was, I loved every second of it. I loved being in costume, I loved the dancing, I loved the movement,” Jones said.

As for her life today, she currently resides in West Orange. She still finds herself at the opening show of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular every year, now as a proud member of the Rockette Alumnae Association. She still feels that same spark of magic as she did when she first stepped onto the Radio City stage all those years ago.

“I will never forget the first rehearsal during tech week when I first stepped on the Radio City stage. Radio City seats 6,000 people and I think it’s the most beautiful house that I performed in. I remember just kicking

Remembering Romero

By Richard Mabey Jr. n this first chapter of this new column, "Journey to Truth," I've chosen to tell a simple, true story of a young man who passed by my Gate House, every weekday. Living in a gated community in Central Florida, for several years now, I have worked as a Gate Guard now for about six years. The story of Romero is very near and dear to my heart. It is a classic example Richard Mabey Jr. of how simple acts of kindness can come back to you, tenfold.

It was in January of 2014, when I was working at the southernmost section of the gated community that I live in, in Central Florida, that I first met Romero. This was a section of the gated community that was under construction at the time. At that time, I began my work shift at six in the morning. Each weekday morning, between 6:00 and 6:15, Romero would drive by my Gate House, in his dear old pickup truck.

Romero was all of 19. He once told me his age, in one of our many early morning conversations. Romero was originally from Mexico and he worked as a Laborer on the section where they were building new homes. Romero had a Crucifix hanging from the rearview mirror of his windshield. He had a Holy Bible wedged between the windshield and his dash-

board, on the driver's side of his faithful, old pickup truck.

We would often talk about the importance of having faith in God. In time, Romero and I got to be friends. Romero would stop and talk to me for about five minutes every day. I remember how Romero's face would light up when he talked about his girlfriend, Maria. Well, one Friday morning, Romero stopped by my Gate House and announced that he was going to ask Maria to marry him, on Saturday night.

I asked Romero if he had talked to Maria's Dad yes. He told me that he had gotten permission from Maria's father, to ask Maria to marry him. Romero was so excited, as he talked to me about Maria. He was nervous and anxious as to how Maria would respond to his proposal. I told Romero that I would pray for him. He smiled, thanked me, waved goodbye and drove off to his work site.

The following Monday morning came. Romero drove up in his old pickup truck. He didn't have to say a word to me.

I could tell by the expression on Romero's face, what had happened. With tears in his eyes, Romero told me that Maria had turned him down. I told Romero that I was truly sorry. I simply told him not give up. That if he truly loved Maria, to not be discouraged.

Sadly, within a month or so, Romero and Maria broke up.

I felt Romero's pain when he told me that early morning. I felt like I was looking at myself, when I was Romero's age.

Here we were, from different cultures, we were of different generations, still I felt the pain that this fine young man was enduring.

I counseled Romero as well as I could, in his early three

to five minute stops at my Gate House. I remember that I told Romero that there were plenty of fish in the sea. I told him that any young lady would consider herself honored to go out on a date with him. I knew that my words did little to comfort Romero. But still, I did my best to bring hope to the young man's heart.

The Friday before Father's Day arrived. Romero drove up to my Gate House in his old pickup truck. He handed me the very card that I've included in this column. Romero simply said to me, "Mr. Richard, this is for you. A gift for you."

The card was a Father's Day Prayer Card. It stated that I would be prayed for at the upcoming Father's Day Mass at Romero's church. I was deeply honored. I told Romero that the good Lord had not graced me to be a father. Romero's reply dearly touched my heart.

Romero simply said, "Mr. Richard, you're like a father to me."

I nearly cried. I got choked up. I thanked Romero. He smiled. He drove off to his work site.

In the early Fall of that year, I got transferred to one of the Gate Houses in the northern section of my Gated Community. After I got transferred, I never saw Romero again. I never got his phone number or asked him for his email address. I had only gotten a few days notice of my transfer. It's just the way life is at times.

I think of Romero, from time to time. Somehow and some way, I made an impact on that fine young man's life. I know that Romero had a positive affect upon my life. I often wonder how he is doing.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.
