Local Pound Project Supports Charities
By Jane Primerano
endy Ciardi gets a lot of phone calls as president of the Hopatcong Pound Project. Mostly from people who have found abandoned pets or have donations of cat food for the residents of the Hopatcong Animal Pound or the adjacent shelter the Pound Project constructed a few years ago. She wasn’t expecting a call in February from Puorro Dream, a project of the Puorro Home Loan Team. The loan company asks borrowers to donate to spe-
cific charities when they receive their financing. Dante and Michael Puorro chose Backpacks for Life, which serves homeless veterans, and the Embrace Kids Foundation as two of the charities. They wanted to add an animal charity, so they started a competition in the form of a Facebook poll. The Hopatcong Pound Project was suggested as one of the contenders. The results of the poll hadn’t been announced at press time, but Ciardi was sure the Pound Project got a lot of votes.

The Pound Project works closely with the Borough of Hopatcong to take care of homeless animals in the borough. Both the municipal pound and the Pound Project serve both Hopatcong and Stanhope. The shelter, which houses cats, is modeled on Tabby’s Place, a luxurious
cat shelter in Hunterdon County, with a few modifications. “No drop ceilings,” Ciardi said, shaking her head. The shelter is clean and spacious with cats sharing several rooms with perches and climbing fixtures. continued on page 5

Local Family Thrilled With Home Renovations, Fundraise For Phase Two
T
By Cheryl Conway hanks to the crew of the “George to the Rescue” reality show and a team of local contractors and designers, the Spencer family in Succasunna will soon be enjoying their renovated house with large handicap accessible bathroom and creative spaces. The show was expected to air on NBC television April 15. For those who missed the show, go to the “George to the Rescue” Facebook page to view online. After finding out in January that their house was picked for the home improvement show, the Spencers had to vacate in Feb. for a month to let renovations begin. Living in a three bed-
room, one-story ranch with three young children had been tight for Jillian and Jason Spencer. Their son, Levi, who will be five in May, was born with Spina bifida, a birth defect leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down. After five and a half weeks, they were invited back to their house on March 13 for the “reveal,” in which their reactions were videotaped for the show. “I was shocked!” says Jillian Spencer, regarding the surprise in her master-bedroom. “It was amazing. It was everything I envisioned that would happen later, down the road.” The Spencers knew that the project would include the construction of a handicap accessible bathroom on
the first floor, requiring all new plumbing and moving some walls, as well as improvements to Levi’s room, says Spencer. The plan was to take part of the space from the master bedroom to create a large bathroom, larger area for Levi’s room to share with his brother Shane, as well as more living space on the first floor. When they entered the house and saw the surprise in their master bedroom, shock set in. “They didn’t just do Levi’s room,” says Spencer, but “converted the master bedroom into a studio for my photography business.” New equipment was in there along with new furniture, desk, rug, backdrop stand and even a “coffee bar for my clients.”
They then led them into the boys’ area, newly painted with a super heroes theme, custom desk area with storage, stairs leading up to a changing pad area for Levi to climb up and get dressed, along with a jungle gym. “That was all a surprise,” she says. On the other side of her photography studio, workers built a handicap assessable bathroom, with gray and white tile going up the wall and handicap features so Levi can roll his wheelchair right under the sink or right into the “open shower with zero entry” and handles. “He can be very independent, which is huge,” says Spencer. Lots of storage and grab bars were added.
Another surprise by GTTR was a visit to the Woodward Camp in Pa. from March 2-3, where Levi was mentored by extreme wheelchair sports athlete Erin Fotheringham, who performs wheelchair
tricks and worldly tours, despite his Spina bifida. GTTR flew Fotheringham to the camp just for the night for an exclusive meeting with Levi, says Spencer, and four hour continued on page 4

Home Renovations... continued from page 2 filming of them playing in the park. The work done by the GTTR team was phase one of the Spencer home improvement plans. Phase two includes the addition of a second story which will add a bedroom for younger daughter Ruby and a master-bedroom. The Spencers will continue to live at Jason’s mom’s house in the same town until all work is completed. Jillian says she hopes to be in by the next school year. To raise money for phase two, the Spencers started a fundraising campaign in May 2016 called Raising The Roof For Levi. So far, $58,000 of its
$100,000 campaign goal has been raised through various fundraisers. The next fundraising event for their cause is set for Sat., May 6, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a Dinner and
Tricky Tray at the Roxbury Fire House. Cost, which will include Italian food, live music and dessert, is $25 per person. A golf outing is set for Sept. 18 at the Berkshire

Project Supports Charities... continued from front page The Project raises funds with wine tastings at Pavinci’s and other fundraisers. This year, they are planning a Rock the Shelters event, the result of a musician who adopted from the shelter. Thomas Nathaniel saw a post about a cat named Midnight, Ciardi said. The Feb. 14 post said Midnight was looking for her Valentine and Nathaniel was it. Many people donate items needed by the animals. The project’s wish list includes: paper towers; kitty litter; Purina Cat Chow, the blue bag; Lysol Cleaner, no citrus scent;
litter box deodorizer; Lysol spray, no citrus scent; Purina Kitten Chow, yellow bag; towels of all sizes; dog biscuits; and wet cat food, classic only. Most of the residents of both the municipal pound and the shelter are feline. Several feral cats also live on the shelter grounds. They have been neutered and are well-cared for. Donations for veterinary care for all the animals are always welcome, Ciardi said. Borough Animal Control Officer Gianna DeMatteo also works closely with the project. During a recent visit to the pound com-
plex, DeMatteo was taking a hound dog named Scout to a meet a potential new family. Scout was the only adoptable dog in the pound at the time. In case the new family doesn’t work out, DeMatteo explained Scout is a friendly guy, but with the typical hound attitude toward cats. He is also diabetic. He arrived at the pound very ill, after his elderly owner went in the hospital and could no longer care for him. His blood sugar is now under control, but he needs two shots of insulin a day and special food. DeMatteo said the expense is not onerous.

Roxbury’s World Language Honors Society Inducts Newest Members
R
oxbury High School held its annual world language induction ceremony in March, welcoming 74 new members. Current members of the honor society led the induction ceremony of their peers and musical festivities for the evening. The honor society members initiated their fellow classmates in both French and Spanish prior to saying it in English for the families present. Judy Hernandez, a Spanish teacher and the Spanish honor society advisor, said: “There are more than 1,000 students in this building who are currently enrolled in world language classes and today we’re honoring
74 of the best. It is refreshing to have the opportunity to teach such bright young people who have not only achieved great academic success in a second language, but also who have embraced a new culture.” This national academic honor society was created in 1953 with the sole purpose to recognize the high achievement of students studying Spanish and to promote and continue an interest in Spanish studies. The Roxbury chapter of the Spanish Honor Society was installed in 1988. This year, Roxbury celebrated its 29th induction ceremony. Jennifer Wilkerson, a French teacher and the French honor society advisor, commented that many
of this year’s inductees and society members are also members of the Roxbury High School French Club. “In these times, it takes a special insight to see the value of acquiring a second language, to be willing to see the world through another person’s eyes,’’ Wilkerson said. “The deep compassion these students have for other cultures will serve them in meaningful ways throughout their entire lives, and I am so happy to be a part of their instruction.” Amid the inductions, Susan Simonet was recognized and presented with a plaque for her numerous years supporting world languages in Roxbury, and continued on page 7

ep. Lenard Lance, who represents the 7th Congressional District, presented the General Billy Mitchell Award to Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Vincent L. Antoniello of the Civil Air Patrol Picatinny Composite Squadron on Feb. 23. Antoniello, of Ledge-

manding General’s Award for Excellence. Antoniello, a junior at Pope John Regional High School, is recognized as a distinguished honors student, varsity football player and member of the National Honor Society, mathematics and Italian honor societies. He has been invited to attend the United States Air Force Academy Summer Seminar this June in Colorado Springs, Co. The Civil Air Patrol is an official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Its Cadet Program provides opportunities for the learning and nurturing of leadership to more than 25,000 young Americans from ages 12 to 20. With the advice and assistance from Civil Air Patrol senior members, cadets
are exposed to a structured program comprised of aerospace education, leadership, special activities, physical fitness, and moral and ethical values through group and individual activities. The General Billy Mitchell Award is a significant milestone, which is earned after the completion of the first eight achievements of the program. The cadet must also pass a comprehensive 100-question examination covering leadership theory and aerospace topics. Being such an important milestone in which only 15 percent of cadets achieve, the General Billy Mitchell Award is normally presented by a Civil Air Patrol Group Commander or higher, the wing director of cadet programs, or a state or
federal government elected official such as Lance. Cadets who receive the Mitchell Award are also eligible for advanced place-

One-pot Meal For A Crowd
arm, hearty meals, including stews, casseroles, soups, and chilis, make for great comfort foods when temperatures drop. Another advantage to these types of meals is they can easily be expanded to serve extended family. Also, when prepared using a slow cooker, these meals can be easily transported to a friends’ potluck or relative’s home. Beloved for their turnit-on-and-forget-it convenience, slow cookers allow cooks to start meals in the morning and then return home at night and have dinner ready and waiting. Busy working families may
find that the convenience of slow cookers is unparalleled. This recipe for “Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli” from “Taste of Home Casseroles, Slow Cooker & Soups” (Taste of Home Books) is ideal for a cool fall or winter evening. It’s a delicious meal to come home to after a busy day and also a great way to make use of leftover ham from a previous meal, such as a family gathering during the holiday season. Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli Serves 6 to 8 3 cups cubed fully cooked ham 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed
1 can (103⁄4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1 jar (8 ounces) cheese sauce 1 can (8 ounces) sliced water chestnuts, drained 11⁄4 cups uncooked instant rice 1 cup milk 1 celery rib, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1⁄8 to 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper 1⁄2 teaspoon paprika In a 3-quart slow cooker, combine all of the ingredients except the paprika. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours, or until the rice is tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

wo years straight Franklin Elementary School has won the Developmental Disability Awareness Bulletin Board Student Contest for the elementary category for Developmental Disability Awareness Month sponsored by the Arc of New Jersey. Gail LaCosta, guidance counselor and Alyssa Maksymiv, special education teacher at the school attended a recognition event at the State House in Trenton on Mon., March 6, to formally accept the award for first place in the elementary field. Third and fourth-grade students at Franklin were invited to design a bulletin board and/or video that

illustrates the students’ acceptance of all people with this year’s theme of “It Matters to Me.” LaCosta said, “Students were inspired to create the bulletin board because the inclusion of students with all disabilities is very important to all of us at Franklin School.” Franklin has several special education classes and the students and staff do their best to make sure all of the students are included. Students in these programs are included in the general education classroom several times throughout the day. “We believe that learning about different disabilities, spreading awareness and acceptance is a huge
part for having a fun and safe school for everyone,” said LaCosta. All eight classes were given their own developmental disability to discuss and learn about as part of this bulletin board contest. Each class then decorated a balloon with that disability for the bulletin board. The theme was incorporated by using a celebration theme. “When asking students about ideas for showing something that matters, they expressed that when things matter we celebrate them,” explained LaCosta. “Birthdays matter, so we have parties. Holidays matter, so we have parties. When our football team wins, we celebrate. From there we brainstormed
ideas and the students and staff came up with the idea of celebrating what stu-
dents with disabilities CAN do, so we camouflaged the DIS in disabilities. So that
at a quick glance our bulletin board says we celebrate abilities.”

Support Hopatcong Organizations At Hudson Farm Spring Charity Hike
ome join in on Sat., May 20, for the 11th annual Spring Charity Hike for Hopatcong, hosted by the Hudson Farm Club. This event is rain or shine. It is a free event and is open to everyone. Participants may register the day of the hike at the farm between 7 a.m.-11 a.m. The trail will open at 7:30 a.m. and trail entrance will close at 11:15 a.m. The Hudson Farm Club in Hopatcong sits on 3,800 acres of beautifully landscaped farmland. The Hudson Farm Club operates The Hudson Farm Foundation which makes annual disbursements to local charities in the community. Twice a year the Hudson Farm Clubs opens the property to the public and hosts
the charity hike events. The spring hike is a benefit for Hopatcong Organizations. Come and explore the Hudson Farm while hiking between three to five miles. For those 65 and over who are unable to hike, enjoy a senior tour of the main grounds including the renovated estate house which now serves as the Clubhouse. At the end of the hike participants will receive "fun money," $1 per year of the participant’s age, which they may donate to the 16 organizations benefiting from the hike. The Hudson Farm will match the “fun money” donations. Please consider making own voluntary cash donation, which will be divided amongst all the organizations. This
year’s organizations include the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, the Hopatcong Fire Department, Hopatcong PBA 149, the Police Explorers, the Hopatcong Ambulance Squad, Hopatcong CERT, Hopatcong PTO’s and Project Graduation, the scouts of Hopatcong and several youth sports organizations. After the hike participants may also enjoy complimentary lunch and receive a souvenir gift, compliments of the Hudson Farm Club. New for 2017, enjoy a “Taste of Hopatcong” featuring samples from local restaurants including Alice’s and Glasser’s Seafood and Steakhouse. Hikers are asked to dress appropriately wearing stur-
dy sneakers or hiking boots and a poncho or raincoat. Other suggestions for what to bring include water, bug repellent, sunscreen, a backpack, and a cell phone. The following are not allowed
on the trail: pets, bikes and dirt bikes of any kind, ATVs or skateboards. Hikers are cautioned that this is a hike on a mountainous trail, not a walk on paved roads. Use discretion with younger

The Bald And Beautiful After Head Shaving Events In Roxbury
n the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, four of the seven schools in Roxbury Township participated in this year’s St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event at Lincoln/Roosevelt and Kennedy School on March 16. Close to 100 students district-wide volunteered to have their heads shaved to show solidarity with those children battling pediatric cancers. Many of these students are repeat shavees. Students also raised money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation that assists families whose children are battling cancer. This year’s goal for Franklin and Lincoln/Roosevelt School was $2,000. More than $12,000 has been raised so far between these two schools as of Fri-
day bringing their collection to more than $227,000 in the eight years they’ve been participating. Jefferson and Kennedy’s goal this year was $10,000 and as of the event yesterday afternoon, they had raised more than $11,000, bringing their total collection to more than $42,000 in just three years. In an effort to get the students and their peers in the mood for this high-energy event, Lincoln/Roosevelt had Tom Wood once again lead the shavees into the gymnasium with a procession on the bagpipes. Their entrance was greeted with cheers and stomping from the students, staff, and family in the bleachers. Chris Argenziano, current vice principal and newly appointed princi-
pal at Lincoln/Roosevelt, shared that this is his most favorite event each year at the school. He asked those sitting the stands to keep in mind the real purpose for being there. “It’s to help raise money for child cancer research and we need to keep that in mind.” Melissa Cosgrove, Jefferson School principal, who’s students were having their heads shaved at Kennedy shared her thoughts as to why it’s important for students to participate in events such as these. “This event brings about awareness for childhood cancer and the importance in finding a cure. It also teaches a lesson in empathy for those children participating. Losing one’s hair is just one side effect of che-
motherapy, but it has an impact in how we recognize the challenges children and others endure living with cancer.” Cosgrove went on to
say, “We asked Kennedy School last year if we could join them in this event to honor our schoolmate Hudson who had been going through chemo at the
time. Although he has since moved out of state, we keep in touch and continue to let him know we support him through his fight against continued on next page

Shaving Events In Roxbury... cont. from previous page cancer. He will always be a part of our Roxbury family!” Events such as these depend on numerous volunteers not just those having their heads shaved. “This whole thing wouldn’t be possible if not for the barbers who’ve taken the day off to come here and help,” shared Argenziano. Special guest visitor,
Colin Berg, a boy from Mt. Olive who was diagnosed with cancer shortly before his 14th birthday, spoke about his experience with cancer, how he missed his friends, missed all of seventh grade, and is finally feeling well enough to return for part of his eighth grade year.
