Fistball Leads Roxbury Senior To Germany

By Jason Cohen lexx Berdej thought fistball was a silly game kids played in school, but she recently found out it is much more than that. Berdej, 17, a senior at Roxbury High School, played volleyball from the fourth grade until she was cut from the junior varsity team two years ago. She explained it was weird not staying after school for practice or games, but eventually she enjoyed the free time. In January, U.S. Fistball Association President Bob Feid posted an ad in the Roxbury Alternative Press looking for seven to 10 girls 18 and under with volleyball experience to form a fistball team. This caught the eye of Berdej’s mother Tara, and she quickly told her daughter. “I thought it was one of those stupid games gym teachers came up with,” Berdej remarked. “I didn’t think it was a real sport.” She added, “My parents were very supportive and more excited at first than I was. At first I was a little wishy washy about it.”

She knew it was a bit similar to volleyball, did some research and tried out for the team in March. However, unlike volleyball, the ball is much harder, there are only five players on the court, a ball can bounce and most importantly, players can only use one hand to strike the ball. In fact, if a player uses both hands it counts as two hits. The sport, which originated in Europe in 1894, has actually been played at the Swim and Sport Club in Flanders since 1927, but went unnoticed until last year, when the club was chosen as the site for the first Pan-American Fistball Games Tournament. Berdej told the Roxbury News that many of her friends were confused about the game. “Most of my friends have no idea what fistball is,” she said. She quickly showed them videos on YouTube and they understood. According to Berdej, learning the techniques and nuances of fistball was a bit of an adjustment. Not only did she have to acclimate herself with new rules, but had to get used to her teammates. While she never envisioned herself playing fistball, she feels it is more challenging than volleyball and may have made her a better volleyball player. “It was really hard to wrap your head around the idea that the ball can bounce before you hit it,” she explained. The girls, who hail from all parts of North Jersey, have been practicing together since March and have grown close, Bredej noted. She acknowledged they were all facing the same challenge; none of them had ever played fistball. So for the past five months they worked hard and are ready to compete in the sixth girls 18 and Under Fistball

Tournament in Nuremberg, Germany from July 20 to July 24. While she hopes the team does well, she is looking forward to seeing the European players who have played fistball most of their lives. “Germany is going to be a lot of fun,” she said. “I’m really excited to be able to meet people from a lot of countries and get their views on fistball.”

Wildlife Sanctuary Welcomes Animals Needing Care And Rescue, Volunteers And More Funds

By Cheryl Conway newly born fawn almost got run over by a lawnmower as it was hiding in the bushes.

The tiny stranded fawn curled up in a fetal position next to the front brick steps of a residential home in Flanders for hours, not knowing where to turn. The homeowner, fearing that the fawn’s mother was not going to return called the Antler-Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary in Frelinghuysen for help. Sanctuary Director Kelly Simonetti of Frelinghuysen gave the homeowner specific instructions to not feed nor go outside to disturb the fawn. She told her that deer usually leave their babies behind hidden in bushes or forests while they go searching for food for the day. Most of the time, they do come back but if the parent deer did not return by 8 p.m. to call her back for some additional help. Sure enough, by dusk, momma deer did come back for the fawn as he was no longer curled up near the front of the house but instead, thankfully, seen lurking in the wooded backyard feeding from its mother. Located on 120-acres of preserved farm in Warren County, Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife rehabilitation center that provides vital care and treatment to sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. It is one of 30 rehabbers in NJ licensed through the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife to care for fawns, raccoon, skunks, opossums, squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks, other small mammals and bears. The sanctuary is dedicated to rehabilitating these animals back to health so they can be returned to the wild where they

belong. Simonetti opened the sanctuary 13 years ago right on the land that she had moved into six months prior with her husband Jim Simonetti, former police chief of Roxbury who is currently running for Warren County sheriff. Simonetti, a registered nurse, used to volunteer at St. Hubert’s in Madison for 15 years taking care of dogs and cats. “I would help them with sick animals but that’s when I realized they were bringing in wildlife, so it was an easy fit,” she says. “So I got my wildlife rehabilitation license,” but decided to “not go crazy with it,” and instead start off slow with just a few animals. “But when you start taking care of animals, you can’t help it to get crazy.” She explains how “we started with a couple of cages in the garage,” with maybe 25 to 30 animals the first year; 100 the next year; “then it grew and grew.” Simonetti soon realized she needed help so “I got friends to help me.” Her sanctuary has grown into four buildings of various animals cared for by about 50 non-paid volunteers- young to old- on a regular basis. She currently has 150 animals, at least one of everything, skunks, opossum, squirrels, raccoon, fawn, groundhogs, bear cubs, foxes and porcupine. Right now she has close to 40 fawns that she is raising, who require the most work when it comes to feeding. Each fawn gets a 12 ounce bottle of formula four to five times daily. Thanks to her “die hard ladies,” her dedicated 40 volunteers ages 50 to 70 years old, who arrive 7:30 a.m. to mix the formula fresh every day. “They are here making formula in the heat. When I say die hard, I truly mean die hard.”

Also called “veterans” by Simonetti, she says of these volunteers, they come with “ice packs around their necks, towels around their head, the boots on, the die-hards, they keep going.” The fawns get fed 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., then 11 a.m., then 4 p.m. and then at 8 p.m. Volunteers, who each go through training and safety issues, work in three shifts with each involving feeding the animals, cleaning cages, 25 loads of laundry a day as each animal has its own towel. Simonetti says they go through six gallons of bleach a week. At the evening shift, “we tuck everyone in for the night; make sure the cages are locked” and then the whole routine begins again at 6 a.m. for Simonetti the next morning before she goes off to her full time job in sales for High Touch Healthcare. continued on next page

continued from previous page “We all go home exhausted,” Simonetti admits, but taking care of animals, like people, is her passion. Before opening the sanctuary, Simonetti worked as an oncology nurse in Newark for 25 years. When she had gotten a puppy, she needed to train it so she started visiting St. Hubert’s. Not being able to ignore the sheltered cats and dogs, “I started going down there and helping them. I just always loved animals all my life. I got more involved in what goes on.

As a volunteer you give a lot more; you realize it is what you want to do.” At the sanctuary, Simonetti has a volunteer veterinarian, Dr. Marie Policy of Sparta, who visits regularly to monitor the animals, tend to their diets and medication and trains student interns. For the past four years, Simonetti has been bringing in four to five interns to gain first-hand experience of taking care of animals that have been sick, injured or abandoned. These students have gone off to veterinar-

ian schools; some have gone onto wildlife projects; one who worked at the sanctuary when she was 13 is in Montana researching prairie dogs. “We give them a solid base to reality,” says Simonetti of her intern program. “These people, they love wildlife, they love habitat, they love nature, they get it. People are amazing; they will pick up anything and bring it here” whether orphaned or injured. At the sanctuary, Simonetti operates everything similar to a medical facility with one building temperature controlled and dedicated to critical care with small infant animals needing incubators and formula; with another building dedicated to animals not ready for the habitat and still in indoor cages; then another area with animals outdoors in cages; raccoons and skunks in another big cage, all scattered and rehabbing throughout the property. “Once stable and eating natural food and behaving, we know we’ve done our job and that’s when we will release them,” she says. “We find either private land or we take them out and release them,” after caring for them close to 10 to 12 weeks. Out of the animals brought there, Simonetti says about 20 percent don’t survive because they’ve been severely compromised, injured or dehydrated.

Simonetti’s favorite part is when the animal turns to the wild. “The best part is when we take in these small, small animals and they are destined to die, to watch the growth and development, they are so depended on us…then they get wild. Unlike dogs and cats, they become dependent on us; other animals they turn wild immediately. That’s the best part.” A raccoon, “they are climbing around the cage, then they go to the end of the forest, they run right up the tree or go across the lake and go swimming,” she explains. Or the bear who is fed vegetables, fruits, pears, peaches and corn, “We put in a bucket of acorns and he smells them, he immediately dumped the bucket and started eating acorns piece by piece. They just know instinctively. That’s the best part; when the light bulb goes on in their head. They are so anxious. When they dig for worms, that’s the most rewarding part. We know we’ve done our job well.” Besides helping animals return to the wild, Simonetti’s mission is to actively educate the public on caring for the ecosystems, supporting the environment, respecting the wildlife and protecting and preserving the native lands for the future wildlife habitat, as stated on her website. continued from previous page tirely by public donations and volunteers, without any local, state or federal funding. With more than 1,000 animals a year brought to the facility, it desperately needs adiditonal support. It costs $175 per animal per month to provide proper care. A 20 gallon bucket of formula which lasts about a week costs $100; she spends up to $60,000 on formula to feed the animals. The annual season runs from March to Oct. and she runs on a $120,000 operating budget. Simonetti holds several signature fundraisers during the year which includes a Baby Shower in May at a local church where people donate supplies; a Tuscan Sun outdoor Italian-style dinner is set for Aug. 21 this year at the Brook Hollow Winery in Milton with an Elvis impersonator; Hay Bails of Hope for Cancer set for Oct. 9 in conjunction with breast cancer awareness featuring tricky tray baskets donated by businesses held at the sanctuary; and a Holiday Bazaar held the first week in Dec. with a Christmas Tour and Craft- show in Hope in which “a lot of people do their Christmas shopping with us; they pay it forward- they give a gift of meaning.” Current challenges are “providing enough good volunteers” and being able to finance the continuation of the sanctuary by funding repairs and building new cages. It is hard to get individuals to contribute during economic hardships, grant writing is

a challenge. “It’s hard to convince people that rehabilitating squirrels is a good thing. When you destroy a habitat you are replacing animals.” Two years ago, Simonetti’s sanctuary was one of only two rehabbers in NJ designated by NJ Division of Fish & Wildlifeto rehabilitate bears. The other rehabber for bears is in South Jersey. “We built a temporary bear cage,” she says, for a bear who was six pounds in April who grew to 85 pounds by Oct. “Our challenge or our wish is we want to build a bigger or more sophisticated bear cage,” she says. This can cost up to $80,000. With the current cage, they can house up to three bears at this time. A corporate or private sponsor to help fund a bear cage, or a donor to act like a Secret Santa, is “our wish.” Send tax-deductible check made payable to Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary, 52 County Road 661, Newton, NJ 07860. Call 973-800-2420 to find out other ways to help or visit anter-ridge.com for more information. If there is a wild animal left on a property or injured, call Simonetti for advice or an appointment. “It is illegal to house or hold onto wildlife in NJ,” she says. “People want to do the right thing but they have to understand they all can’t be experts because they read about it on the internet. People have to follow the rules.”

Historian Shares Some Light On 240th Anniversary Of The Declaration Of Independence

n July 3, 1776, the day before the actual signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, one of the drafters of the document, sensing the immensity of the occasion, wrote a letter to his wife Abigail describing how he believed it would be celebrated in years to come: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding Generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more. Indeed, the nation appropriately celebrated the Fourth of July this year with parades, fireworks and gatherings of friends and families, but how much thought was given to what the fanfare was all about? This year’s Fourth of July marked the 240th anniversary of the creation of a new form of government when representatives of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain

in the western hemisphere took the unprecedented step of declaring independence from their mother country. With reasons laid out in a respectful manner in a Declaration of Independence that became a model for other countries, a new form of government was born, emphasizing freedom and liberty for the governed as opposed to the monarchal domination that had ruled countries for centuries. The founding fathers cautioned that a nation based on “government of the people, by the people, and for the people would require “eternal vigilance on the part of the governed. During this 240th Anniversary Year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, all Americans should be mindful that freedom is not free, nor is it an entitlement, but a fragile blessing that cannot be taken for granted, demanding awareness and personal participation on the part of the governed. As Thomas Jefferson, writer of the document stated, “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate. Submitted by Marge Cushing, RTHS president.

in which he had to get through three rounds. “Out of 64 people, only four people get through, he explains. “I got through 60 people; I had to play six games. That was when Sardoni was one of the eight players flown out to Burbank, Cali., and then to Microsoft’s Novo Theater in downtown Hollywood to play in the finals in continued on page 14

NFL Running Back Maurice Jones, left, congratulates Frank Sardoni Jr. for winning Madden 2016, with Sardoni’s friend, third place winner Peter Calefato.

By Cheryl Conway laying video games for two decades for fun recently turned competitive for one Roxbury man who now holds the title as Madden 2016 Champion. Frank Sardoni Jr., 25, of Succasunna, recently won $20,000 in an EA Sports Madden NFL 16 Championship Tournament. He was crowned the winner on Tues., June 14, at Novo Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., after competing for a month on his Xbox One against a million other players around the United States. Being known as the “greatest Madden Player on the planet, is quite thrilling for the 2009 Roxbury High School alumnus who not only won the cash prize but got to take home a championship title belt, got sent on a free vacation to California where the final matches were played, appeared on ESPN, got to meet a bunch of NFL players, appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and was on stage with Marshall Falk during the Dorito’s 50th anniversary celebration while in L.A. It was “definitely a surreal moment, says Sardoni. “Definitely out of a fairy tale

book. I went down to California for a free vacation. I was able to actually win! Sardoni has been playing video games for 20 years, since he was five years old. His favorite game, by far, is Madden; he has been playing for ten years on Xbox One, since 2013 and on Xbox 360 before that. While he plays for fun, he decided to play more competitively the past three years. He had won a few thousand dollars from the underground tournament in 2015. Winning Madden 2016 was his first big tournament that he won. The tournament began May 14. “That’s when the whole ladder system started, he explains, with about a million gamers playing throughout the country. “You go online for a month, he explains, and play random people. He would try to play five games a day, spending about 20 minutes to complete each game. From that, the top 64 players with the highest record move onto the next round. Sardoni was ranked 42 at that point. “Then they created the single elimination bracket,

Fresh Cutz Barber Shop

wner John Lloyd started cutting hair when he was 14 years old, cutting my brother and friends hairs. As I got my first job in a shop in Dover in 2003 thru 2011, I learned alot from a great barber and I was mentored by the owner himself. In 2011 as I took a new job at DPW, I continued cutting hair after work. I had setup shop in my garage. I couldn't just put my scissors down, cutting hair was my passion indeed. Eventually in 2014, I went back to Dover full time and complete the Robert Fiance Academy in North Plainfield and graduated in 2015. My dream was to open a Barber Shop in my hometown of Roxbury. It came true on June 24th, 2015. It's been great and I celebrated my first year in business. I want to thank you, my family that helped to open up my shop, and a great team of barbers like Jack Hudspith, 2014 graduate from Cutting Edge Academy of Succasunna, and Willy Gonzales, a passionate barber, who has over 13 years of experience. He also started cutting his friends’ hair when he was 15 years old. Come in and experience a great haircut in a place with a warm, friendly atmosphere.

continued from page 12 ESPN and ESPN 3 from June 9 to June 14. Sardoni flew out with “a buddy of mine,” Peter Calesato from Staten Island, N.Y., who also made it to the finals. Calesato ended up finishing in third place winning $3,500. The finals were handled as a pool play or a “round robin” with eight players. There were two round robins with four players in each. The same tournament was happening with PlayStation Four. The top four players from Xbox One was one round and the top four players from PlayStation Four was the other round. Each player gets to pick their “Dream Team” selecting 34 various players from the NFL teams and creating a fantasy team. Players must be at least 18 years old to play in the free tournament. In the final rounds he faced gamers from areas such as New York, Ohio, California, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Chicago and Seattle. “You get to pick players from each team,” he says. Some of his top players included Rob “Gronk” Grockowski, a tight-end for the New England Patriots; Calvin Johnson Jr., retired wide receiver for the Detroit Lions; and the late Sean Taylor from the Washington Redskins.

When he is not gaming, Sardoni works full-time in information technology for New York Life Insurance. He attended Roxbury schools for ten years, since the eighth grade and then got his degree in business management from Fairleigh Dickenson in Florham Park and an associate’s in computer science. While baseball is his sport, having played at the college level for FDU and for the RHS varsity team, Sardoni says he turned to football for the video game. Chicago Bears is his favorite team, he says. With his $20,000 prize, Sardoni plans to purchase a condominium and help pay for his wedding tentatively scheduled for Oct. 2017. He just got engaged Mon., July 4, to Amber Lopez of Flanders, his RHS sweetheart, a 2011 graduate who he has been dating for the past three years. Playing Madden is a fun challenge for Sardoni, who will probably be automatically entered into the next tournament, which will now be held four times annually for gamers to enjoy. The next tournament is set for Nov. “Strategies that you can come up with, almost like a chess game,” is what excites Sardoni in the Madden game. “They make a move, you counterattack.” Having good,

“hand eye coordination, you have to be good at the controller. I like games like that.” While all of those skills are important, Sardoni shares his secret to winning this year’s tournament. “We use different schemes, coming up with a unique scheme that no one else has,” he says. “I was running a different formation

that no one was running,” known as the Single Back Tight Slots. “I used Rob Grockowski to full advantage that no one could stop.” No matter the strategy, “Practice makes perfect,” concludes Sardoni. “If you want to be good at something, then practice, practice, practice.”

Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces

By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.

“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-

tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. For more information, go to magalettadesigns.com. To arrange for an appointment or contract a project, call 973539-1818.

Roxbury Library To Offer Juicy Food Presentations In July

nterested in history, the environment and, most importantly, food? Visit the Roxbury Library this July for exciting food presentations that will make the mouth water! Join food historian Judith Krall-Russo at the Roxbury Public Library at 6:30 p.m., Mon., July 25, where she will discuss some of the favorite foods and beverages of past presidential families during her presentation, “Favorite Foods and Libations of Presidential Families.” Learn about other past presidential families and their favorite fare: like that George Washington loved honey, and Martha had a great fondness for cake; that President Garfield’s favorite beverage was tea and

that Thomas Jefferson did not invite more than 12 guests for dinner? For garden growers, get the most out of a garden and enjoy the fruits of that labor during Rutgers’s Master Gardener, Ilona Ontscherenki, who will present, “What’s Eating My Vegetables and Plants?” at 6:30 p.m., Tues., July 26. The garden pest control class will teach people how to identify the most common garden problems and how to deal with them in order to keep vegetables and plants in good condition. To register for the events, call the library at 973-584-2400 ext. 501 or e-mail comments@roxburylibrary.org to register.

Fuel Your Day The Healthy Way

etween balancing work with family and friends, squeezing in a healthy meal can be hard, and finding time for a workout can be even harder. A busy lifestyle demands quick, portable and convenient foods that let you refuel your body with better health in mind. When time is tight, it may be tempting to reach for prepackaged snacks or fast food, but you can make your own grab-and-go snack packs and meals at home in less time than it takes to get through the drive-thru lane. A cool and refreshing superfood smoothie can give you a much-needed boost when your energy is dragging. Another smart snacking tip: fill sandwich bags with servings of fresh fruits and veggies that you can carry in your purse or gym bag to nibble on when hunger strikes. Options such as watermelon cubes or sticks are a great choice because they are high in fiber and water to help fill you up with nutrients instead of calories. Also be mindful of how you answer sweet tooth cravings. A naturally sweet treat such as a slice of watermelon is a satisfying alternative to cookies or candy. In fact, work-

ing sweet flavors into your regular meals is a way to keep cravings at bay. This salad combines an ancient grain high in protein and nutrients with the sweet crunch of fresh watermelon for a rich taste and texture. Find more tips and recipes to fuel your day at watermelon.org. Ancient Grain Salad with Watermelon Servings: 6 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons maple syrup 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons lemon zest salt, to taste 3 cups warm, cooked kamut grain (about 1 1/2 cups dry) 1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans 1/3 cup diced green onions, plus 1 tablespoon 1/3 cup thin-sliced celery 1 cup corn 2 cups chopped watermelon continued on next page

Lincoln/Roosevelt Students Give Back Through Charity

incoln Roosevelt School has a long history of being a very giving school in many ways. Over the years, the school has given to various charities and groups as a means of sharing with the students the need to help fellow citizens when opportunities present itself. Principal Jack Curtis decided this year to introduce a new program at the school in hopes of helping his students experience the good feeling that comes with being part of a program that stresses helping others. Continuing in that spirit of giving, he proposed a program that would allow his students to focus on some of the charities that are attempting to find cures for some of the most debilitating diseases and also organizations that help people in a time of need. This program allowed students at Lincoln/Roosevelt to become aware and familiar with these charities and the efforts that were being made to help their fellow humans. Curtis said, “Ten well-known charities were selected based on their ongoing contributions to our society and because they

are known to be well-run and reputable charities. Contributions from the students weren’t mandatory but they were appreciated. We thank all the families for allowing your kids to get involved in this giving endeavor and allowing them to become more familiar with how these charitable groups help other less fortunate individuals.” Each month focused on the respective charity. They American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Lions Club International, American Heart Association, Kidney Association, American Lung Association, Doctors Without Borders, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Roxbury Social Services. Thanks to their efforts, the students at Lincoln/Roosevelt were able to raise $1,000 during the course of the year. Each charity received a check for $100 in the name of the Lincoln/Roosevelt School student body. “I believe it was a good start and hopefully something that can be expanded upon next year,” according to Curtis.

Upcoming Family Day Event

esidents of Morris County and surrounding communities are invited to a Family Fun Day and Resource Fair on Sun., July 31, from noon to 4 p.m., at Central Park of Morris County. The feature of this free event – held rain or shine – will be a competitive Wheelchair Softball Game at the park’s Challenger Field from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those attending will have the opportunity to experience firsthand Morris County’s fully accessible ball field and playground, while gathering valuable information presented by vendors about a range of available disability services and resources in the community. The event is being sponsored by DAWN Center for Independent Living, a non-profit agency serving people with disabilities in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties. “This event will provide an opportunity to bring together all members of the community not only to have a fun day with the family, but also to gather valuable information on disability services and supports available in surrounding communities,” said Carmela Slivinski, executive director at DAWN Center for Independent Living. “Last year, this event observed the 25th anniversary of the

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It was such a success that the staff and board of Directors at DAWNcil decided to make it an annual event.” DAWN Center for Independent Living (DAWNcil), based in Denville, is a non-profit agency that assists individuals with disabilities in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties with many services, including advocacy, information and referral, peer support, independent living skills trainings, employment opportunities and more.
