Remembering 9/11 18 Years Later

By Steve Sears eptember 11, 2001 started out like a gorgeous late summer day.

The beautiful day soon turned ugly, as the biggest attack against the United States of America on home soil claimed 2,977 lives combined in New York City at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

New View Media Group reached out to various community members, seeking their remembrance of that fateful day.

Alex Roman Township of Mount Olive Councilman Alex Roman lost his Mom, 49-yearold Arcelia Castillo, on September 11, 2001. Instead of her normal 9:00 a.m., she had arrived early to work that morning at 7:45 a.m. to the World Trade Center North Tower.

American Airlines Flight 11 hit the tower at 8:48 a.m.

“I prefer to be left alone on 9/11,” says Roman. “Much like my mother, I’m not comfortable with being viewed as a victim. My kids also spend the day quietly reflecting. We have attended several 9/11 ceremonies in New York City in the past, but mostly we prefer to go to the 9/11 Memorial at different times of the year.”

Roman celebrates his Mom’s life just like anyone else that has lost a loved one. “I never assume my loss is greater than anyone else’s,” he says. “I keep a picture of her at my shop along with a framed United States flag that was presented to us by President (George W) Bush.

I routinely talk about her to my wife and kids and how each of them have some of her qualities. Her name regularly comes up at family gatherings.”

“As 9/11 approaches, I feel guilty being happy (my birthday is Sept. 8). It’s like a rollercoaster ride.”

Ray Perkins Former Township of Mount Olive Town Council President Ray Perkins was on the West Side Highway of Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001.

“I was in the city that day that the attack happened, and I was on my way into midtown, and a plane probably hit a few minutes after I passed by there. I’m on my way to attend a meeting up near Grand Central, and I get a call from one of my colleagues, and he says, ‘Hey, a plane just hit the (World) Trade Center – and it was a commercial plane!’ I said, “You’re kidding me!’ I get up to my appointment – and I’m passing ambulances and fire trucks like crazy, they’re sailing down towards this place – and I get to where I’ve got to go, and everybody is continued on page 2

sitting there looking at the television. Out the window you could see the buildings. I then said, ‘I can’t believe this – oh my God!” Perkins headed to a pay phone (cell phone connections were knocked out that morning) line of about 200 people to wait and make a call, and then the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower. Perkins then exited the line and started running towards downtown, reached 23rd Street, then headed into a store to buy 12-packs of water, giving it to those who’d just experienced the most terrifying moments of their lives. “These people walking towards me look like someone had dumped flour on them, because now the buildings had collapsed.”

Perkins knew that Mount Olive needed to remember the lives that were lost that day, and he kicked a memorial idea in motion. “On (United Airlines) Flight 93 that went Ray Perkins at 911 Memorial dedication. down (in Shanksville, Pennsylvania), was Hilda Marcin, a woman from town, was employed through the Board of Education as a teacher. I had met Hilda; what a pleasant lady. She was moving out to live with her other daughter in California.”

Mayor Rob Greenbaum got involved, donations gathered, and current Council Presi-

dent Joe Nicastro’s stepson, Michael Lalama, came up with the design rendition. Perkins then forwarded the design to a Canadian company called Picture This in Granite, who took care of the final product. “We got an amazing amount of support,” says Perkins. “It was tremendous. It was heartwarming to see the community members and the township employees that dedicated their time and expertise to getting this done.”

Bruno Varano officially became a United States citizen in 1961. The morning of 9/11, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge was at his office in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Varano, currently President of the Local 121 of the Federal Agent PBA, got a call that morning from one of his New York agents. “He said, ‘Listen, we got attacked.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ I told him to cut it out and he said, ‘No, I’m telling you – we got attacked.”

“I then got a call from D.C. and realized it did happen.”

“It was right after the second tower fell that I got in there (to the city),” he rememcontinued on page 3

continued from page 2 bers. “I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, The Terminator, and one scene showed that in the future there was a huge war, and there are atomic bombs, it was like hell – everything was gray, everything was cloudy, there was smoke and everything was destroyed. That’s what it looked like. It was incredible.”

Varano checked into his office several blocks north of the area, and he and his team tried to see what they could do. “It was just a mess; so chaotic. Nobody knew what the hell was going on. Sirens – ambulances and fire trucks – were still going back and forth, and then at one point you couldn’t go anywhere. The soot, the dust, and the metal…you couldn’t move in cars, you had to go on foot. There were still fires going on there, the State police were there, they were bringing in the military. It took a day or so to get acclimated to what was going on.”

“But that first day – I don’t know how to explain it,” he states. “I guess try to walk into a volcano without getting cut, without getting burned, without getting killed. There was no ground to walk on. It was nothing but debris.”

Joel Katz Joel Katz, an investment banking firm employee of Sandler O’Neill and Partners, was on the 104th floor of the South Tower that fateful morning.

“I was on the trading floor, we had all the window shades down on the windows because of the glare, so we can’t really see outside, and we hear a big roar

– and we had heard roars before that high up – but this really shook the whole floor,” he recalls. “It kind of stopped the floor for a moment, but we went back to what we were doing.”

A man from the other side of the floor came running over to inform Katz and others that a commercial plane had just struck tower one. Katz started thinking. “It was a beautiful, crisp day. It didn’t add up that a pilot would do that. We had plenty of cloudy days when you wondered if that was going to happen, where we’re in the fog, but this was a beautiful day.”

The smell of jet fuel was very strong, and Katz felt that the situation was uncomfortable. He and 16 other people left the floor to start their descent and exit the building. Once he exited the building and was about fifty yards, he heard another big roar. It was another commercial jet, this time striking the very building he had minutes before departed.

“17 people who were at work at my company escaped, and 66 people died,” he says.

As Katz walked up the street, he thought about his coworkers. “I told them I was going downstairs, and they said, ‘Okay, see ya,’ and never gave it second thought. They had little babies at home, they had wives and families like I did – I had young children at the time – and they were in peril, so I thought of them. I thought of my family, obviously.”

Eventually Katz made it to a friend’s home in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he met his family. “This became a congregation area for us, and we were getting continued on page 4

continued from page 3 calls from the wives of coworkers asking if we had seen their husbands. They (the calls) were very hard and I didn’t know.”

A few days later, Katz and his team were stationed temporarily at a new location, and all the surviving employees hugged. “We helped each other, spent the next two months going to funerals – sometimes three to four a day – and the company provided counseling services if we needed it.”

Katz, who now teaches Finance as an adjunct professor at County College of Morris, occasionally gives talks regarding 9/11. “The people who died were innocent people going to work like I, who had young families, who went to work and didn’t come home. I think that’s obviously a tragedy, and I think in honor of them and the lives they led, the love they had and it was an injustice to them, their families and their country -- I think it’s important to remember the lives they led, the spirit that they shared, and I don’t ever want to forget that I knew these people.”

“In my mind, they died as heroes.”

Tom Miller Tom Miller has been practicing fine art for years. He has a master’s in fine arts from the University of Idaho. He works in watercolor, colored pencil, ceramics, and more, and his topics are a variety. A Marine veteran, he was working at the time at Madison’s Fairleigh Dickinson University on an Operation Harvest Moon project, which is the operation he got injured in during his time in the Marines.

“Along comes the morning of 9/11, I’m at home waiting to go to a screenwriting course – it was a 9:30 class – I’m drinking a cup of coffee, and had the radio on, and heard of a plane crash (at the World Trade Center). So, I turn the television on to see what was up, and then I saw a second plane go in.”

Miller went to his class but first stopped at Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Florham Park to view the on-goings. “I could see it, just a bit of the towers and the smoke. “I tried to get into the city, asked the Morris County sheriffs to take me in, but they couldn’t.”

Learning that the towers had fell during the class, Miller started going to work on his 9/11 artwork. He has roughly 65 pieces, and he still creates them. His creations are given to first responders.

Miller, 78, lost a neighbor, Michael Sorresse, in the attacks. “He was a neighbor and a friend.

I would say he was in his 30s, just had gotten married, worked for Marsh USA Agencies up on the 101st floor of tower one. I really liked him. He was a really nice kid. Then there was Giovanna Galletta “Gennie” Gambale (of Cantor Fitzgerald). I did a ceramic sculpture of her missing poster – I got her family’s okay.”

He then deeply reflects. “It (9/11) was as important as when my partner died in my arms (during an Operation Harvest Moon battle in 1965),” says Miller. “So many people, such a senseless thing, and because Mike died, too.”

continued from page 4 Rita Weiner When 9/11 occurred, a big piece of Rita Weiner’s heart was ripped apart.

That morning, she was preparing to head into New York City with her daughter, Michele. “My husband called me and told me something had hit the World Trade Center.

Then, while watching television, I saw the second plane hit.”

“We didn’t go in; no one went in. 9/11 was horrendous.” She pauses, then continues. “I was angry. I’m a New Yorker at heart and have always lived in the tri-state area. This is my heart, just like if you’re from France, Paris is yours. I grew up in the area -- Rockefeller Center, skating over there, Times Square, the whole bit - and to see it demolished like this… it was very, very hard.”

The next day, Weiner saw a Salvation Army ad asking for help at Ground Zero. Her Dad was alive at the time, and he saw the same ad. “He said, ‘When I was in World War II, the Salvation Army brought me blankets, they brought me hope, and I never forgot it.’ And he suggested I join.”

She worked with the Salvation Army on Thursdays, noon – midnight. And when Weiner, who prepared meals as a volunteer, and her entourage first arrived at the sight, she was shocked. “It was an absolute disaster. It looked like a nuclear explosion. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen, and the smell…I’ll never forget it. It was like decay, decomp. It goes in your nostrils and you never forget it for the rest of your life. The ash would be up to your knee when you walked through it.” She then adds, “You would think from

such large office buildings, you would find desks and other things…nothing, it was like a giant crematorium. Another thing: we were not allowed to cry in front of the people. If you had to cry, you had to go in the back.”

However, it was a period Weiner would not regret. “It was cathartic and healing for me. It was healing for them and healing for me. Instead of feeling helpless and important, I was doing something. I was helping somebody hurting.”

After serving at Ground Zero and the “other” Ground Zero (a morgue) with the Salvation Army from September 2001 to May 30, 2002, she then became a tour guide for World Trade Center Tribute Tours from October 2005 until 2018. She eventually received an award from the center for doing 500 tours, and even got her first tattoo ever…on her back, which has the 9/11 symbol and reads, “Remember and pray”. “It was in my DNA,” she says.

The whole experience changed her. “There’s pre-9/11 Rita, and there’s post-9/11 Rita. Pre-9/11 was good; you never saw tragedy, you heard about Pearl Harbor, but you weren’t really a part of it. Post-9/11, I lived it personally; this was the first on my soil, in my town. I had hatred, and that bothered me, because I am a loving, giving person, and I don’t like having hatred in my heart. And I do believe when you have bitterness and hatred it kills you.” Serving with others fought the hatred. “I needed to express myself somehow to help others. The Salvation Army was the perfect way.’

Her advice? “Enjoy every day you have, because you see how quickly it can be taken away.”

First Baptist Church of Caldwell Offers Helpful Addiction Recovery Program

ravis Clark has walked the walk. An Assistant Pastor at First Baptist Church of Caldwell (FBC), he remembers the details of his troubled south Jersey days well.

Clark, who has been working with Reformers Unanimous Addiction recovery program for about ten years and is Director of the program at FBC, discovered the worthwhile organization because he needed help. His mother was an alcoholic, and he attended meetings for her, and he felt he didn’t have any issues.

However, the meetings changed his opinion.

“I went and said, ‘Man, I’ve got a lot of issues,’” recalls the former Cherry Hill resident. “I was a gambler – I was going into Atlantic City at 16 years old, and if you dress nice, they don’t really card you -- I was sell-

ing drugs and doing sports betting. I was selling some things and making some good money with it. But I really didn’t think I was that bad.”

In addition, Clark’s Dad was also an alcoholic, and his brother was in jail for heroin. His Mom went to rehab, and Clark himself sought help, attending meetings at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Berlin, New Jersey. He realized how great the program was and was encouraged to become a member and leader.

RU meetings are held at FBC on Friday evenings from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Clark runs the male group, and his wife, Chaniece, the female group. The group is open to all people, not just Caldwell residents, and addictions aren’t just limited to alcohol, drugs and gambling. “One of the biggest addictions we have right

now is overeating,” says Clark. “That’s one a lot of people don’t think about.”

Pornography (a big one for men and women) and abuse, whether physical or verbal, are also encountered.

Meetings, coined “Talk, Talk, Talk,” are very comfortable, and on average about fifteen people attend. No attendee is forced to speak, but all are invited to. Each meeting starts off with a 15-minute video from RU founder Steve Curington (a former ten-year drug addict who in the early 1990s almost lost his life in a car wreck) regarding one of the ten principles biblically to fight addiction. A key thing thereafter is testimony time, where rather than focusing on the negative of the addiction in your life, all are encouraged to offer a positive about their week.

“Every week I make a very

big thing by saying, ‘Listen, we all have problems, but we all have some good things that are going on.’ It can be as little as free parking somewhere. Whatever it is, we need to find the good and praise that,” says Clark. After that, the men and women break into separate groups for discussion, Clark addresses all in attendance, and then he opens it up to others to speak.

Pastor David Bulka weighs in about the program’s worth. “NJ and USA have had addiction problems for ages. From sugar, nicotine, alcohol, opioids, gambling, pornography, and you name it. Addictions many times are hidden in the closet because the addict is too embarrassed.

Addictions can destroy the soul of a person, taking down friends and family.

God never intended us to be addicts. There is a cure. Je-

sus Christ cured thousands during HIs earthly ministry, but His death, burial, and resurrection solved the sin problem. The Bible says: " If any man be in Christ, he is a new Creature " (2 Cor 5:17).

FBC (First Baptist Church of Caldwell) has a ministry called RU that helps people escape addiction. RU is led

by Travis Clark. Travis has led this ministry through Bible teaching, prayer, accountability and genuine Care. Many have been helped already.”

“I remember when I first met Travis and Chaniece,” says Felicia, who had been struggling with a food addiction, binging mostly on sugar. “In the past I have stolen food, stole money to buy food, hid the wrapper of the food I ate.” She started her RU program in October 2018. “They encouraged and helped me develop a routine that focused on

spirituality by reading God’s Word daily, praying, exercising, eating at certain times, drinking more water, etc.

Every week we would also address my progress.”

Roseland Teen Wins Pro Boxing Debut

oseland teen Vito Mielnicki Jr. fell in love with boxing as a child and recently won his first pro boxing fight in less than two minutes.

Mielnicki, 17, a senior at West Essex High School, defeated Tamarcus Smith on July 13, at the Newark Prudential Center in one minute and 16 seconds. The youngster, who stands at 5ft 11 and 147 pounds, is elated, but humble.

“It’s still crazy to me, but it’s time to get back to work,” he said. “I felt great. All the hard work had paid off. It was a surreal moment.”

His knockout actually made the top 10 plays on SportsCenter that night.

His passion for boxing began a decade ago. At the age of 7 he was at home watching Shane Mosley versus Floyd Mayweather. Mielnicki recalled how he was instantly hooked and told his father, Vito Mielnicki Sr., he wanted to box.

With no expectations, he figured he would it would be fun and a good way to stay in shape.

“It was just something about it that made me want to try it,” he explained.

When he was younger, he didn’t know much about the sport. He was athletic, fast, strong and could punch, but soon realized there was much more to the sport than phys-

icality.

Looking back, Mielnicki, describes himself originally as a brawler. While today he has learned there is much more to the sport than punching.

“The sport of boxing isn’t to get hit,” he said. “It’s to hit and not get hit.”

Around the age of 9 or 10, things began to change. Wally Moses trained him at that time and he had a major influence on him.

Moses showed him how to be on the offensive and be defensive. He also educated him on many techniques and minutiae of boxing.

“I really love the whole sport of boxing,” Mielnicki commented. “I enjoy watching it, training, and the weight cutting. You got to want to go to the gym every day. You got to want to dedicate your life to boxing.”

In eighth grade he quit football to focus on boxing. Success soon followed.

He won his first national title at age 9 and competed in Las Vegas for Junior Gold Gloves.

After that, he won Junior Gold Gloves nationals four times and many other awards.

Around 13 or 14, Mielnicki knew he could do this for a living.

As he continued to garner attention and rise in the boxing ranks, he knew he could not have gotten this far by himself. The teen said he owes gratitude to his parents, strength and conditioning coach Freddy Caruso and train-

er Dwight Fleming of the Passaic Boxing Gym, where he trains.

“You can’t do anything alone,” he stressed.

“It’s got to be a team effort.”

After talking with his family and others within his team of confidants, he knew he was ready to go pro. He hired a manager, Anthony Catanza, and they booked his first fight for last month.

Catanza told the Caldwell News he knew there was something special about Mielnicki.

He is a quiet, humble kid, who is ferocious and explosive in the ring.

“Vito is one of those guys who don’t come along often,” Catanza said.

While his opponent was 24 and had more experience, that did not matter, Mielnicki explained.

“I wasn’t really nervous,” he said. “I was just ready to put on a show.”

With a right hook to the face, the fight ended quickly.

“I knew it was over by the way he went down,” Mielnicki said.

Going forward, his goal is to move up in his weight class, book a fight for October and continue to improve.

“I’ve learned from boxing that anything in life that you want to be great at, you have to dedicate and be willing to sacrifice to reach

Millburn’s Angela Huang Wins Second in Congressional Art Contest

Caldwell University Alum, Favour Onose Garuba, Awarded $8,500 Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship

avour Onose Garuba of Union, has been awarded a Fellowship worth $8,500 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Garuba is one of 58 recipients nationwide to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship.

Garuba received a bachelor's degree in health science from Caldwell University. As a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow, Garuba will pursue a Doctor of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

Since its creation in 1932, the Fellowship Program has become one of the Society's most visible and financially well-supported endeavors, allocating $615,000 annually to outstanding students for first-year graduate or professional study. This year’s program awarded 50 fellowships of $8,500, six $20,000 Marcus L. Urann Fellowships,

named for the Society’s founder, and two new awards at $35,000 each, the 1897 Fellowship and the Sherrill Carlson Fellowship.

The selection process for a fellowship is based on the applicant's evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, and acceptance in an approved graduate or professional program.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to outstanding members and students on chapter campuses through study abroad grants, dissertation fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

illburn High School’s Angela Huang recently won second place in the Congressional Art Contest for her work, “Atarxy.” She was celebrated alongside Grace He from Montgomery High School who won with the entry, “Besides the Water,” which will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol with the other winners from Congressional District’s across the country.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute holds an art contest to honor artistic talent all across the nation. It began in 1982, and more than 650,000 students have participated. Students entries go to their representative’s office, and artists in the districts select the winners. The winners are recognized in their district as well as in a ceremony held annually in Washington, DC. The winning art pieces are displayed for one year in the US Capitol.

Three winners were chosen in Congressman Tom Malinowski’s congressional art contest. The competition ran in every congressional district in the nation, and Malinowski’s was open to high school students in New Jersey’s Seventh Congressio-

nal District.

The congressman posted, “Congratulations to Angela Huang from Millburn High School for winning second place in the 2019 Congressional Art Competition with her work "Ataraxy"!

The student’s art works submitted by 83 students from across the seventh district were judged on visual impact, design, originality, and craftsmanship. Judges included Marjorie Nathanson, Executive Director of the Hunterdon County Art Museum. Sculptor and Adjunct Professor Michael Wolf, along with the director of the Matheny Art Access Arts Program, Eileen Murray, also judged the art competition.

Rules applied for the students who decided to enter. Their artwork had to be two-dimensional, and each framed artwork had to be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, weighing no more than 15 pounds framed.

Each entry had to be original in concept and design.

Students Found Beauty and Elegance in Their NASA Experience

uly 20, 2019 is a big date in Science - or so the folks at NASA would say. It's NASA's 50th anniversary of its successful Apollo 11 Moon mission.

Six recent graduates of Millburn High Javier Coindreau, Max Koenig, Francis Rose, Andrew Chen, Claire Yan, and Darcy Gruer - one might say, celebrated that anniversary a little early. As Team Mercury, they were chosen to go on a week's all-expenses paid trip to Kennedy Space Center, June 29-July 3, for their winning NASA App Development Challenge video.

The students' video was a simulation of the real-time July 2nd stress test launch of NASA's Orion crew module. The students' "handles" on their video were names such as: Coder Man, Model Dude, Nameless, The Director, The Editor, and Android.

In a test known as Ascent Abort-2, on that July 2nd day, NASA verified the Orion spacecraft’s launch abort system. There's a tower on top of the crew module that can steer the capsule and astronauts inside it to safety in the event of an issue with the Space Launch System rocket. The launch went to an altitude of 31,000 feet at Mach 1.15 (more than 1,000 mph). Said their engineers, the launch is a step towards getting

back to the moon by 2024.

The students had competed against 22 teams, and got selected along with a team from Tulsa, Okla.

"So if you're truly passionate about science, just stick with the rough parts," said Coindreau, “knowing that those parts will allow you to see the big picture and make connections that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. Even if they seem like hard subjects, which they often are, all that does is make it so much more enjoyable when you're able to use and apply those hardearned skills into something impactful.”

He continued, "Oftentimes the sciences can seem hard and boring initially, but getting through those topics allows you to eventually see nature in a whole new light.

Science and math have immense beauty and elegance, but it takes time to really appreciate that."

In the Fall, Coindreau will be headed out to Northeastern University for Computer Engineering & Computer Science, Francis Rose will be going to Boston University for Biology, Andrew Chen will be at Purdue University for Aerospace Engineering, Max Koenig will be going to Cornell University

for Mechanical Engineering, Claire Yan will be at Vanderbilt University for Computer Science, and Darcy Gruer will be on the University of Maryland College Park campus for Aerospace Engineering.

Coindreau is pursuing the NASA Pathways internship, he said, "which is a halfstudy half-work internship, because it aligns well with the timing of the co-ops that Northeastern offers."

"The good thing about NASA," said Coindreau, "is that due to the amount of internships thy offer, there's always something that will match up with whatever time schedules you'd want."

Coindreau added that Team Mercury had seen the film Hidden Figures as part of their curriculum for their introductory Space Exploration class in high school. He said the most surprising part of the film was noticing the "extreme amount of people it took to get just a single person to space, much less to the moon."

Podcasting Center Set to Take Off at Millburn High

illburn High School is gearing up for a brand new Podcasting Center for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Podcasting Center will be located in the library, will run on a flexible timetable, and have an accessible scheduling calendar.

Says Media Specialist Ladawna Harrington, “the equipment will be available to all the content areas, as well as our English Language Learners population, and other school community groups such as the staff, PTO, administration, and clubs.”

Harrington has started a team of podcasting "student experts" who will provide technical assistance, support, and training. Podcasting is unlike social media handles like Twitter, Snapchat or Facebook. It’s rather, she emphasized, “a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or a mobile device.”

Podcasting is normally produced as a series – like a radio broadcast. It’s also akin to an ongoing blog, where the blog’s creator has a continuing commentary on a subject.

Podcasts can be videos as well as audio presentations. Like TED talks, podcasts hone in on an interest-grabbing subject for viewers or listeners.

According to Harrington, podcasting is a stellar tool in the following areas: vocabulary, writing, editing, public speaking, and presentation skills. “Students,” she said, also can “learn skills that will be valuable in the working world, such as communication, time management, and problem-solving.”

Critical thinking skills “that engage students in planning and organizing as they work to produce products that can be

shared locally or to a broader global reach,” are also anticipated as part of opportunities that will be provided by the Podcasting Center.

The Podcasting Center will pay attention to the speaking and listening components of the Common Core Standards.

Harrington expects that using digital recording devices will help students “participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.” Students also will practice their chops by: “listening to others with care, gaining the floor in respectful ways, speaking one-at-a-time about the topics and texts under discussion, and follow agreed upon rules for discussion.”

Harrington hopes that the students’ podcasting experiences will lead to building “on others’ talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others, tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant descriptive details, and speak audibly in coherent sentences.”

The creative bug is expected to be sparked as well. The media specialist anticipates students creating “audio recordings of stories or poems, with drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.”

Social emotional literacies also are enhanced with podcasting. These finer points of human interaction include “self-awareness, by recognizing strengths, self-confidence, and self-efficacy.”

Harrington pointed out that self-management is practiced with podcasting by having the students do goal-setting and by

practicing organizational skill-building.

Social awareness is invaluable here as well, through taking a longer view – a perspective – of a particular subject, practicing empathy, and of course, showing respect for others.

Relationship skills are an interactive part of podcasting because there’s necessary communication between at least the podcaster and his or her audience, there’s social engagement, there’s strengthening budding relationships, and of course, there’s building a team to work in partnership with.

Responsible decision-making is part of podcasting, says Harrington, due to the necessity of “identifying problems, analyzing situations, reflecting, and taking ethical responsibility."

For Harrington, “podcasting addresses both the need for students to take an active role in individualized learning as well as developing environments of high quality collaborations. All school groups will benefit from the Podcasting Center.”

Partnering with the community is an important outgrowth of the new initiative. Said Harrington, "It cultivates community partnerships within the school and local community -- including families and caregivers, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, public and higher education libraries, and businesses. It will promote engagement and a community of readers."

Harrington wrapped up with -- the Podcasting Center is all about linking leaders. "It leads in setting the school district's vision and strategic plan for digital learning. It fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners."

“This team of all fourth graders came together in the fall and despite busy schedules met several times a week throughout the entire year,” Cassano said. “They brainstormed for several months and didn’t settle for the first idea or the fiftieth but as the ideas are all kid generated- they shocked even their coaches with the way they thought outside of the box for their solution to the problem.”

More than 900 teams competed, with each team representing the first or second place winner from states across the United States and countries around the world.

Millburn Schools had six teams at the World Finals.

“Performing with a great amount of effort, impressive creativity, awesome acting and strong teamwork,” said Principal David Jasin. “It is exciting to have a first place team and trophy.”

Cassano, who did Odyssey of the Mind as a child, said this was a different experience.

She and the other coaches could not help the kids, but were permitted to ask questions that could guide them to answers.

The kids formed the team in August and

began meeting in September twice a week.

They were assigned to build an animal that would hide three times and have a big reveal at the end.

Through much trial and tribulations, they eventually formed a dog called Pet Peeve.

With only a $145 budget, the youngsters used a bathroom fan, circuits, a bottle filled with sand, a pulley, cardboard and more.

“There were definitely times when people on the team were frustrated,” she said.

“They certainly didn’t get to the finish line on day one.”

They created different sets, each of which had the dog lost until the final one.

He got lost in the Lorax, with the cat in the hat, at Willy Wonka’s factory and finally at the “Wizard of Oz” he told him he was really a pet called Peeve, not Steve.

“Each team member contributed, and their strengths balanced each other between building the mechanical creature, clear script writing, set building, costume designing and performing,” Cassano said.

“The kids learned how to work through obstacles over the course of the year and truly gelled as a team and had fun while doing it.

How Chocolate Milk Can Aid in Replenishing Nutrients for Teen Athletes

etween sports practices, training, games and tournaments, teen athletes endure a lot of stress on their bodies. While some parents know real dairy milk is a nutritious option for growing kids, many don’t realize that chocolate milk has nutritional benefits, too – especially when it comes to exercise recovery.

According to a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Texas at Austin, recovering with low-fat chocolate milk as part of a tough training routine could help teen athletes get stronger. The study included more than 100 high school athletes entering grades 9-12 who were enrolled in a five-week training program involving training four days a week. Some students recovered with chocolate milk and others recovered with a sports drink with the same amount of carbohydrates but no protein.

Researchers found that students who recovered with chocolate milk had greater strength gains compared to those who

recovered with sports drinks. In fact, the chocolate milk group bench-pressed an average of 3.5% more at the end of the program than at the beginning, whereas teens who recovered with sports drinks actually decreased their bench-press weight by close to the same amount, around 3.2%.

Additionally, those who recovered with chocolate milk improved in squat strength by nearly twice as much as those who consumed sports drinks for post-workout recovery, lifting an average of 15% more weight (compared to about 8% more weight) by the program’s end.

s a result of the expansion of the New Jersey Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) to all county colleges in the state, County College of Morris (CCM) now is offering this tuition assistance program to students.

The CCOG may cover the full cost of tuition and approved educational fees for 6-18 credits after all federal, state, institutional and community aid have been applied. To qualify, students need to have a family adjusted gross income of no more than $65,000, not already have an associate or bachelor’s degree, be registered for 6–18 credits, and have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or if a New Jersey Dreamer the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application.

The first step is to apply to CCM, which can be done online at www.ccm.edu/ admissions, and then fill out the FAFSA at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa or if a New Jersey Dreamer the New Jersey Alter-

ocated on a tiny hill at 289 Westville Avenue in West Caldwell is the Zenas C. Crane Homestead, built in 1854. As beautiful as it looks on the outside, inside there is a wealth of history and artifacts that are glamorous in themselves.

Welcome to the home of the “roughly a couple dozen members strong” Historical Society of West Caldwell.

Established post-United States Bicentennial in February 1977 and a non-profit 501(c)3 member supported organization, there are two floors worth of ages past and education that awaits an eager learner. Roxanne Douglas is the President, Beverly Crifasi and Ronald Dey Vice-Presidents, and Kathy Cass is the Recording Secretary. Crifasi is also site historian.

“In the beginning there was the Bicentennial Committee of Caldwell and West Caldwell, that was its name,” says Crifasi. “They decided to do a project and trace the history of houses because they were sure that there were houses more than one hundred years old, but none had been identified as such. And so, they created a book, and it became a West Caldwell book. Ralph Harrity was the editor. The book was published in conjunction with the Bicentennial, and a little later this house (the Crane Homestead) was available, and the people in the group urged the people in the town to take the house, and then they arranged to use the house. The town insisted that the name of the organization had to have ‘West Caldwell’ and not Caldwell. So, the Bicentennial Committee of Caldwell and West Caldwell became the Historical Society of West Caldwell.”

The group, which was chartered in 1981, faces many challenges, including upkeep of the home - which they took over that same

year - and membership. The home was renovated and added to in the 1930s.

“The Cranes were here (in the home) until the 1960s,” says Cass.

“It’s important,” says Douglas regarding the HSWC, “because you’re preserving the history of this town, because residents call us up to find out history about their houses or their own family.”

“We have a database online of genealogy,” adds Crifasi of the group’s well-done website, which also includes a virtual tour.

The group also need additional Board members.

“That’s important,” says Douglas, “because you get people involved who are interested in history, would like to be involved in preservation, would like to see that society continue. We do need members on the Board, who also bring their own ideas,” she adds with emphasis.

While Crane family photos and items are prominent in the house, there are other items of note, like period dresses made expertly by Cass, and the painting artwork (circa around 1900) of William Hassler which dominates the walls of the front foyer. His painting palette, photos he took, and pill boxes from his local pharmacy

are on view. “He was also a musician,” adds Crifasi.

Of chief interest is the Banner Flag of the NJ Cavalry Militia Company. Presented to the HSWC in 1994, it is displayed under protective glass. “We discovered that everything we had been told originally about the flag was wrong,” says Crifasi. Given the flag by one of the members of the Dey family, the flag has been traced to 18141820, and red ribbon adorning it reads “Caldwell Troop”.

The Historical Society of West Caldwell does not have regular hours but will open upon request. School and scout troops enjoy visiting, so this is encouraged. There is much to see and learn.

The group, which occasionally is awarded grants to further their worthwhile endeavor, is seeking members, especially folks who enjoy quilting, scrapbooking, and spinning. It is also seeking information on African American, and other immigrant history pertainable to the area. “We want to know a lot more about what they went through,” says Crifasi.

West Orange Nursing Facility Helps Couple Celebrate 65 Years Together

leanor and Daniel Clarich, both residents at Daughters of Israel (DOI) in West Orange, had a special reason to celebrate this summer. The couple renewed their wedding vows in a festive ceremony put together by DOI staff on June 27, to mark their 65th wedding anniversary. The ceremony, which took place at the DOI facility, was an elaborate celebration of a lifetime spent together.

The Clarich’s renewed their vows with a chuppah, dessert reception, wedding cake and other festivities.

The celebration was officiated by Senior Rabbi Geoffrey Spector and Assistant Rabbi Simeon Cohen from Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, along with Cantor Sharon Knoller. The guests, who consisted of DOI residents and the Clarich's family, friends and fellow temple members,

received personalized chocolate wedding favors.

Patti Lowy, the Clarich’s daughter, said that her parents have known each other since they were children. Eleanor was born on the Lower East Side of New York City and in her childhood moved to Brooklyn, where Daniel had also grown up. According to Lowy, the two always socialized via a circle of neighborhood children, often hanging out in Eleanor’s grandparents’ house.

“My father says they met at a dance after Yom Kippur, and they went out for ice cream – although his chronology sometimes changes,” Lowy mused.

The actual 65th anniversary for the couple will be in December, but they held the celebration earlier as DOI marks such events during the summer. According to Lowy, the couple, who has been living together at DOI since April,

was approached by the facility’s staff with the suggestion for the ceremony. DOI had already been in touch with the clergy of Temple Beth Shalom, where the Clarich’s had been members for nearly 50 years.

“The ceremony was beautiful, and aside from the residents, many family members and friends from Beth Shalom attended,” Lowy said. “That was very special for my parents.”

DOI is a multi-faceted nursing facility offering modern and comprehensive services including long-term care, sub-acute rehabilitation, memory care, hospice/palliative care and respite stays, according to its website. Lowy was full of praise for the way DOI has been taking care of her parents.

“They have been absolutely incredible – it’s a wonderful, cheerful place with friendly staff,” she said. “My hat goes off to them, not just for the vow renewal ceremony, but the way they take care of their residents.”

As part of the ceremony, two staff members used photos provided by Lowy and her family to compile a memory book for the Clarich’s. The “beautiful” album contains all of the couple’s and their family’s essential milestones, according to Lowy.

Eleanor and Daniel have two children, Patti and Jonathan, four grandchildren and

one great-grandchild – who Lowy says is “the light of their life.” As the Temple Beth Shalom clergy that officiated the ceremony has known the couple for many years, the event was especially tinged with emotion.

“They absolutely enjoyed it,” Lowy said of her parents.

“It was very emotional for them.”

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

West Orange Public Schools Welcome New Superintendent

est Orange Public Schools is pleased to welcome Dr. Scott Cascone as their new school superintendent.

The 11 schools in the system, grades kindergarten through 12 will be under his supervision, and Cascone is delighted to start the school year as West Orange Public Schools’ superintendent.

Prior to this new role as superintendent, Cascone served as Executive Director of Academics for the Old Bridge Township Public Schools. He resides in Monmouth County and is married with three children. Cascone attended both Seton Hall University in New Jersey and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ever since he began his career in public education 20 years ago and went back for his doctorate, it was Cascone’s long term goal to become a school superintendent. This milestone was years in the making, now Cascone can use his education and experience to make a difference in the lives of the students and staff.

Cascone is more than ready to represent this district, as he explains what makes it stand out, “The beautiful diversity, history and traditions, outstanding academic and extracurricular programs, dedicated staff and talented students.” With this proud and positive outlook about the West Orange region, the students and staff in these schools are privileged by such heartfelt expression from the man they’ll instantly admire.

As he takes on this new position, Cascone is geared up for the road ahead, which is sure to be rewarding. What is he most excited about? “Injecting an overarching tone of hope, positivity, and optimism for all stakeholders. As West Orange is in many ways a microcosm of our larger society,

making this school community a model of the amazing things that can happen when people come together around a common cause, in this case the education and fortification of the community's youngsters,” he so eloquently shares. Naturally, there will be challenges, but Cascone is confident he can overcome such obstacles if and when they do arise. He explains, “In a large organization, it is important, albeit challenging to establish consistency in our practices while maintaining some level of individual and school autonomy.” That said, with Cascone’s experience and attitude, achievement is attainable at any level.

Both short and long term goals are already in the works for this savvy superintendent. He says, “This year is all about building confidence with stakeholders and building positive momentum. Emphasizing and helping all stakeholders recognize and perhaps rediscover the joy of the amazing work we do every day. In the future, (I plan to) create robust systems of support for staff and parents and help foster school environments where all, not some or most students feel excited about coming every day.” Schools need more leaders like this, encouraging students to look forward to learning and actually loving it. Parents will be just as passionate, as will the staff as they see new hope on the horizon.

Cascone is honored, yet humble. He realizes his responsibilities and how his job is high-level and overarching. With great preparation, Cascone is set to bring the community together classroom by classroom, but fully understands that he is by no means the only person who can create change for the better and keep what’s already great going strong.

orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning on September 19.

The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining your New Jersey State Boating Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the

required state examination.

The cost of the course is $90.00.

Legislation in the state of New Jersey was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation requires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom study, homework, and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a New Jersey Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when

on the waters of the state.

Failure to exhibit the certificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. One must be at least 12 years of age to attend the course.
