go was a fun time, for both, Mom and myself. We met some very interesting people. And, we both learned the agony of waiting for just one number to be called to complete the horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line to be able to joyfully call out “Bingo!”

I think it was in the beginning of 2018 that Mom and I began attending classes, at our gated community, for developing skill and style for writing children’s stories. I remember that Mom excelled in the class. She made a lot of friends and people enjoyed hearing her array of children’s stories.

It was in early 2018 that Mom needed to depend upon a wheelchair to get around. The arthritis in her hips had gotten so bad that she was hardly able to walk. Mom’s cardiologist would not authorize that she was stable enough for hip replacement surgery, because of the degree of her heart murmur due to Aortic Stenosis.

In the middle of November of 2019, Mom had heart surgery to replace her Aortic Valve. There were post-operative complications and Mom needed to stay in the hospital.

Thanksgiving Day came and Mom was still in the hospital.

On Thanksgiving Day, my sister Patti and I arrived at the hospital, bright and early to spend Thanksgiving Day with Mom. We made turkey sandwiches and packed them in a little insulated lunch box, complete with a plastic container of dry ice. We also packed two small bottles of iced tea to have with our special Thanksgiving meal with Mom that day.

An older woman came into Mom’s hospital room at about high noon. She carried with her a tray, with lunch on it. The kind woman smiled at Mom, put the tray down on Mom’s mobile, bedside table, said Happy Thanksgiving to Mom, then turned and returned to the hallway to the big lunch storage container on wheels.

And, behold, there it was the hospital cafeteria’s version of a Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, I do not want to be unkind here. But, let’s just say, it was mediocre at best. The turkey was that pressed turkey that comes in a roll and someone simply sliced it up. Mom was given two slices of this turkey

roll with a sparing amount of gravy. There was a little white, corrugated, paper cup filled about three-quarters of the way with cranberry sauce. Not the real cranberry sauce, but rather the cranberry sauce that has a slight resemblance to gelatin. Then, there was a bit of stuffing, some green beans and then some corn. Not the greatest Thanksgiving meal that my Mom ever had, but still it was better than nothing.

I cut the turkey slices for Mom. She protested with every slice of the knife. “I’m not an invalid,” Mom kept telling me.

I assured Mom that she wasn’t an invalid, that I wanted to slice her turkey for her.

Mom ate her turkey dinner, while my sister Patti and I ate our turkey sandwiches. It was a joyful moment in time.

But it was definitely blanketed with a sprinkling of sadness.

We talked about past Thanksgiving days. We remembered relatives, who were now having their Thanksgiving dinner in continued on page 4

Women’s Suffrage Celebrates Centennial

By Henry M. Holden he U.S Constitution originally left it up to the states to determine who is qualified to vote in elections. In the early years of our nation, states typically limited the right to vote to “freeholders” which were defined as persons who owned land (men) worth a certain amount of money. It was thought that people who did not own property would have no permanent stake in the community.

The campaign for woman suffrage was long, difficult, dramatic, and at times heart breaking. Decades of effort to include African American and other minority women in the promise of voting rights remained the challenge.

Voting rights for women and racial minorities were unheard of. But the devil is in the details. Most African Americans were slaves, owned by their white masters, and could not vote. Several states, however, allowed free blacks to vote. Most women could not vote, but in a number of venues, qualified women voted in local elections.

In 1776, the New Jersey Constitution provided that “all inhabitants” of legal

age who made the property and residency requirements were entitled to vote. It is unclear if it was intended to include women. By 1790, state election law used the phrase he or she, to clarify the issue.

By 1807, with allegations that men were dressing as women, and voting twice, the right of women to vote in New Jersey was revoked.

For the next 30 years women’s suffrage was not taken seriously by lawmakers.

Women organized, petitioned, and picketed to win the right to vote, but their struggle took decades to accomplish their purpose. Few early supporters lived to see final victory.

The Seneca Falls Convention, in 1848, was the first women’s rights convention in the United States. The meeting launched the women’s suffrage movement.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, at the convention and it led to many other women’s rights conventions.

Women had always been citizens; and the privileges or immunities clause therefore conferred on women the right to vote, Anthony argued.

When Anthony tried to vote, to her surprise, she was permitted to do so. Her victory was, shallow. Two weeks after the

election she was arrested for illegal voting.

Despite her argument about the significance of the Fourteenth Amendment, she was convicted.

In 1878, the suffrage amendment was first introduced in Congress. It would be introduced to each congress for the next 41 sessions. Women worked tirelessly, but strategies for achieving their goal varied.

Some pursued a strategy of passing suffrage acts in each state.

Early in the 20th century, women were only able to vote in nine western states which adopted woman suffrage legislation by 1912. Others challenged male-only voting laws in the courts. Some suffragists used confrontational tactics such as picketing, silent vigils, and hunger strikes.

Usually supporters met angry resistance.

Opponents heckled, jailed, and sometimes physically abused them.

By 1916, almost all of the major suffrage organizations were united behind the goal of a constitutional amendment.

When New York adopted woman suffrage in 1917, and President Wilson changed his position to support an amendment in 1918, the political balance shifted.

On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment, and two weeks later, the Senate followed.

Momentum rippled through the states.

In July 1920, all eyes were on the Tennessee capital, Nashville, as anti-and pro suffragist each lobbied for the vision of a socially evolving United States. One more state was needed to ratify the proposed amendment and that duty rested solely on the shoulders of Tennessee. It passed by one vote, cast by a 25-year old legislator named Harry Burn, whose mother had urged him to do the right thing.

When Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920, the amendment passed its final challenge of obtaining the agreement of three-fourths of the states. Secretary of State, Bainbridge Colby, certified the ratification on August 26, 1920. The ratification was a transformative moment in America, changing the face of the American electorate forever.

A Thanksgiving Story... continued from front page Heaven. We remembered places, pumpkin pies that didn’t cook so well, and times when there were so many relatives at the Thanksgiving table at the old Mabey Homestead, Mom would pray that the turkey would suffice. Miraculously, it always did.

None of us knew it at the time, but that would be Mom’s last Thanksgiving meal. When they replaced Mom’s Aortic Valve, the surgeons did not properly align it and Mom died from a slowly leaking heart valve.

Mom went Home to be with the Lord on the twenty-third of December, that following month, just last year. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think of my mom. Life is so very short. None of us have any guarantees for tomorrow.

I live in a 55 plus, gated community in Central Florida. Because I worked as a Security Guard, for eight years, I have been blessed to come to know quite a few people. Whenever I hear someone say that they have stopped talking to a loved one, it brings a certain sadness to my heart. Believe it or not, I have even heard a few people in my church talk like

this. It deeply saddens me.

I think there are three elements to having good relationships with loved ones. Those three things are: forgive, forgive again, and forgive yet again. If your Mom is still on this side of Heaven’s Gate, tell her how much you love her. I wish I could mine.

By Steve Sears he Township of Wayne may soon have a new, official Chamber of Commerce.

Christian Sees, owner of Integrus Financial, one of the founders of the young group, explains its genesis. “We are essentially still in the start-up phase of this thing,” he says. “There was an idea that started maybe around a year ago. Some small business owners kind of got talking, and these things kind of happen organically.”

Discussion ensued about having a Chamber of Commerce in Wayne. “There wasn’t one, and that was the big thing,” Sees says.

“The college (William Paterson University), the organizations, there’s just so much.”

Sees recalls hearing that perhaps there was at one time a chamber that had merged into a tri-county chamber, which is much bigger geographically than just Wayne, and was originally headquartered in Wayne but moved. “When that happened,” he says, “it seems like the focus kind of came off Wayne.

You know, if there’s ever a ribbon cutting for a new place in Wayne, you never see a member of the Chamber of Commerce there, which is just odd.”

Therefore, the notion of a new chamber.

In early February 2020, 15 business owners gathered for dinner to discuss the idea and

gather feedback, such as social media being used to communicate with the community.

Then COVID-19 hit, but Sees still created a “WCC’s Downtown Wayne” Facebook page.

“From there, we started trying to help small businesses get attention, and the different initiatives going on in Wayne. There was a frontline appreciation group, and we were just trying to help promote what they had going on. Then the group started to grow.”

And the name? “Wayne doesn’t have a center of town, it has like five centers of town the way it’s laid out,” says Sees with a chuckle. “So, what we were trying to do is create a virtual downtown. Again, we’re at the beginning stages of that.”

Via the group, a few events have taken place. The first was a Wayne Eats Out event.

Different restaurants chose to participate in a virtual restaurant week, featuring different specials and contests. Residents would post a photo picking up food at a participating eatery, their name put in a hat for gift cards.

“It worked out really, really well,” says Sees.

Another event was held to benefit the Passaic County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), a group which represents foster children. Sees learned that the group has a huge back-to-school drive and other continued on page 8

Diabetes in New Jersey: A Statewide Concern

Written By Chris Bauer MD re you constantly thirsty, always tired, having frequent urination or blurry vision? You might have type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes affects 9.2% of all people in New Jersey with over 640,000 people living with diabetes statewide. Most new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes are asymptomatic and only 10% of new cases are type I diabetes infections. Diabetes represents one of the most significant health concerns that faces so many members of our community.

The majority of diabetes cases fall in either a type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes category. Diabetes type 1 is a condition that is more autoimmune based and is one in which your body does not make insulin.

Insulin breaks down sugar in your blood and regulates your blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is when your body is making insulin but the tissue and organs in your body are less sensitive to insulin and as a result blood glucose levels are elevated. Often type 2 diabetes is associated with increased weight gain and obesity. Gestational diabetes is when pregnant women have an elevated blood sugar levels due to hormones that are made in the placenta.

The most common way that any of the diabetic conditions are diagnosed is through routine doctor visits. This is true because again most cases of diabetes are asymp-

tomatic. When people are symptomatic and having elevated glucose levels the diagnosis of diabetes can be easily made. Most often though the diagnosis of diabetes is made through standard screening tests. A fasting blood glucose test, a 2-hour plasma glucose test and an elevated Hemoglobin A1C level are all tests used to diagnose diabetes. Regularly scheduled annual exams at a family medicine or internal medicine doctor’s office can facilitate the testing for diabetes.

After a diagnosis of diabetes has been made, the patient and the doctor then need to create to plan of management. If the person has type 1 diabetes, then often the patient will be given insulin. Insulin can be injected around mealtimes or at planned intervals during the day to maintain a person’s normal blood glucose levels. People with Type 2 Diabetes often can make lifestyle changes such as weight loss, improved diet, and increased activity to improve their blood glucose levels. If these methods don’t work, then patients can either be put on a trial of injectable insulin or an oral medication to increase the body’s response to insulin. Pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes are initially tasked with diet control of blood glucose levels with improved diet and if this fails then medication is used.

Patients with diabetes are at risk for many conditions and need to incorporate addition-

al screenings into their daily routines to prevent further issues. Increased risk of heart disease, nerve injury, eye disease and kidney disease are the most common types disease sequelae that are associated with diabetes.

Eye injury is one of the most significant areas of injury in diabetic patients. People with diabetes are recommended to have regular eye exams to evaluate the possible formation of cataracts, glaucoma and vision impairment. Regular feet exams are also recommended due to the increased incidence of nerve injury with diabetes. Kidney func-

tion should also be evaluated and monitored closely in the patients with diabetes. This can be accomplished by bloodwork as well as urinary analysis.

Diabetes is a multifaceted disease with a tremendous impact on those who have it. Only through regular screenings and adequate patient education can the harmful effects of diabetes be minimized. New Wayne Chamber... continued from page 5 fundraisers which took, in his words, “a detour” thanks to the pandemic. “There was this huge back-to-school event to get school supplies for these kids.” The young chamber got involved to help out, and then a lot of the town. “Different businesses, sports organizations, the Mayor (Christopher Vergano) and his wife – it was great. We got 120 backpacks filled with supplies for them, and a whole bunch of donations of money. It was such a great event, and I felt so good about it. We were helping these kids. They were so thankful.”

for an organization like a Chamber of Commerce.”

Formalization is being looked at, and a new website will be unveiled, as will the officers of the group. “This is 2020,” says Sees, “I don’t want this to be your father’s Chamber of Commerce. I want it to be fresh and new, interacting with the community, and not just a Tuesday morning, once a month networking meeting at a local restaurant.” And, although the group is not yet completely solidified, Sees says, “We’re really excited about the potential it has.”

Lakeland Bank Volunteers Help Plant Landscaping for Laurelwood Arboretum’s New Greenhouse

en Partyka, Vice President and Area Manager of Lakeland Bank, and a team of Lakeland Bank volunteers worked with Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum staff and volunteers to install landscaping for the arboretum’s new propagation greenhouse.

Partyka was joined by Lakeland Bank Assistant Branch Managers Woudeline Cherry and Myrle-Ann Cherry, as well as family and friends. “Lakeland Bank has a longstanding tradition of helping the community and is proud to be a supporter of the Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum,” Partyka said.

Lakeland Bank also donated the funds to purchase the landscaping plants. Designed by the arboretum’s horticultural manager Joan Scott-Miller, the landscaping integrates the greenhouse into its woodland setting by featuring five varieties of juniper, Colorado spruce, eastern white pine and caryopteris Longwood Blue, as well as peonies, alliums, anemones, and autumn crocus.

The 24-foot by 68-foot propagation greenhouse replaces the original structure, which had been built almost a century ago. The new state-of-the-art greenhouse makes it possible for the arboretum’s staff and volunteers to propagate trees, shrubs, and perennials to replace aging plantings in the arboretum and to help to preserve the unique plant varieties for which Laurelwood is so well-known. The greenhouse will be used for these purposes throughout the winter months by a team of specially trained volunteers.

Construction of the greenhouse was funded by a grant from the Passaic County Open Space, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust, as well as Wayne Township and Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum.

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum is a volunteer non-profit conservancy whose mission is to preserve, promote and improve the arboretum and provide opportunities for horticultural appreciation and education through public programs and outreach activities. Love and Peace Initiative is Changing Perspectives During a Trying Year

By Steve Sears ayne resident Jeffrey Antonucci remembers the day four years ago when his signature “Love and Peace” hand sign surfaced from “deep within a blueberry sky.”

“I was living in the world of that story,” he explains, recalling that during the hotly contested Presidential campaign of 2016, he was in the process of writing the manuscript of his soon-tobe published novel, Deep Within a Blueberry Sky. “The beautiful world that exists within that story, along with the beautiful characters. It’s all about Antonucci’s initiative, “Love and Peace, a SIGN for Our Times,” where he, along with ambassadors and purveyors of good will, inspiration, and healing for hurting hearts, are ensuring that better days are ahead for everyone and everything.

Antonucci’s initiative was on a side burner while he finished his book and saw it through to publication. He revisited the advocacy in February of 2019. In a blog post at that time, he stated that the hand sign and its meaning were needed due to “…the tumultuous state of our world and human condition.” He was prophetic, and it’s also a perfect message for 2020, when a great portion of society is discouraged and depressed about what this year has delivered to doorsteps. “It is even more, unfortunately, compounded,” he says.

Antonucci doesn’t do it alone. To aid the transportation of his message, in July he developed the “New Year in July, A Global Love and Peace Celebration Tour!” video. He felt it necessary to move beyond the doom and gloom and focus on delivering instead inspiring messages out to all the world, and he reached out to that world to do so, contacting other countries to have young peo-

ple deliver his “Love and Peace” hand sign and, most of all, the message. “I really felt the message should come from the hearts of the children, who could really show how the love is in all of us, no matter where we’re from,” Antonucci says. He reached out to locations in entirely different time zones – 24 of them. Once he contacted them and spoke with people, it restored his faith in humanity.

“Here is a guy from New Jersey calling them out of the blue, and how open they were to this idea, and willing to help.” The 24-minute video, which features children of different nationalities verbalizing love and peace to viewers, is being followed up by a new November offering. A mix of kids and adults in the New York/New Jersey area, people of all different walks of life and backgrounds, receive the message and send it back, thanking those in the first video for putting out to the world Antonucci’s hand sign along with their own beautiful sentiments of love and peace. The name of the second video is, “A November to Join Together, A Global Love and Peace Celebration Tour, Too!” “The power of love, that same power that drives the universe,” says Antonucci, “is in each and every one of us. And with that power, there are no limits to the good we can do.”

In large dutch oven, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Stir and cook 5 minutes until onion is translucent. Add garlic and red pepper. Stir and cook 8 minutes until soft.

Add tomatoes, red beans, pinto beans, broth, chipotles in adobo sauce, corn, remaining salt and remaining pepper. Simmer 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until chili has thickened.

Wayne, New York, residents numbering just above 1,000 people, was initially settled in 1791 by Abraham Hendricks, known then as Town of Frederickstown. It changed its name to Wayne in 1808. Wayne, New Jersey was formed in April 1847. The former Wayne is 23 square miles, the latter 25.

“You have two lakes on either side of the town, and then up at the top, you have rural farms,” says Stephen Butchko, former Town Manager. Wayne is bordered by Barrington to the north, Tyrone to the east, and Bradford and Urbana to the south.

Bob Canfield, 93, is the former Wayne, New York historian and also former custodian of McDowell’s Cemetery. “We have one (buried) Revolutionary War soldier, and I’ve got quite a few family in there and friends,”

he says.

“It’s a tourist town, really,” says Canfield of Wayne, located in Steuben County. “A lot of people come in during the summer to their cottages, and the (Keuka) hotel is gone, and was replaced by five cottages.

There was a dance hall there; it was an entertainment center.”

“About 1845,” Canfield says when asked when the first of five Canfield generations started living in Wayne. “We border on Keuka Lake and also Waneta Lake. Back in the early days, a stagecoach ran between Bath and Geneva, and went up over the hill.

Then as farm produce became available, they started to ship them on the lake over Keuka, as the steamships were starting to develop. It started with one and then became two, and it would stop there at the village of Keuka and there would be a loading facility.”

An abandoned hydroelectric plant dates back to 1928. Canfield’s father was shovel operator. “They opened up a canal to allow Waneta Lake to flow into it,” he says. The birth of the power plant just about coincided with Canfield’s. “When I was born,” he says, “we had a lot of activity in Keuka.

We had a big hotel, there was of course the powerhouse, and they were going to

expand that. Then natural gas was discovered about a mile up the hill from where they were, so there were six natural gas engines with a generator between them, and they were generating a lot of electricity, and then they had to stop because they ran out of gas. Natural gas was a shallow field as it turned out. So, they went back to the

regular power station. I was living right next door to it.”

“Ellis Phillips consolidated all this hydropower in western New York,” Butchko explains further. “The advantage is Waneta, 1,064 feet above sea level, and Keuka, at 714 feet above sea level. They dug a canal continued on page 20

A Fearless Young Voice: She The Change

I

By Jillian Risberg t’s easy to say it’s not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those, like Etasha Donthi, who see the need and respond. The CEO and host of She The Change podcast harnesses that restless energy and unleashes it against injustice, inspiring the next generation of female change-makers to be part of the discussion.

“I believe everyone has the power to change the world,” Donthi says. “My goal is to foster conversations with my guests about today’s most pressing issues, such as inequity in the healthcare sector, mental health, and racism. I am also not afraid to address topics that receive less attention, including access for poor women and girls to basic necessities like menstrual products.”

Hearing stories and discussions about how fearless young women have stepped out of their comfort zone and used their voice to speak up instills an inspired feeling within the listeners, according to the podcast host.

“I am proud to say She The Change has been able to do that,” Donthi says. “It is the most rewarding feeling to receive messages from girls who are choosing to take risks and speak up, even though it may seem intimidating.”

Her podcast guests are powerful, young female leaders who are advocating, empowering and initiating change on a local and global scale. She The Change offers an opportunity for activists and change-makers to converse about issues where societal intervention is necessary.

“Each guest has a different cause of interest, and on the show we highlight that cause and explain its importance,” Donthi says. “Also, I hope to bring well-known female influencers. It would be a dream to have Alexandria Ocasio Cor-

tez, Karlie Kloss, Michelle Obama, Priyanka Chopra, Greta Thunberg and Nadia Murad join me on an episode because they inspired me to pursue my passion.”

The podcast host’s goal at She The Change is to bridge the gender gap of women in leadership positions by inspiring her listeners to pursue their dreams, start their own initiatives and nonprofits.

According to Donthi, she has already tackled climate change on an episode and her advocacy extends to global warming, pollution, gun violence and more.

“Although we are making progress, the gender gap between women and men in leadership roles is far too large to be ignored,” the podcast host says. “Many girls have amazing ideas that could change this world, but unfortunately, many will never carry through with those ideas because they have been fed the lie that their dreams are not realistic.”

Donthi started She The Change to change that narrative and encourage Gen Zers worldwide to stand up for the causes they believe in. The podcasting space was the perfect platform and the podcast host embodies ‘lead by example,’ working to reduce pollution and end worldwide poverty.

“There is currently a scarcity of Gen Zers hosting podcasts, so naturally, Gen Zers make up a very small slice of podcast listeners,” says Donthi. “After I began growing a potential audience through Instagram, I began releasing episodes of She The Change, and those Instagram users became She The Change podcast listeners!

She embarked on this journey young (and she’s only 15 now)…

“In August of 2015, I started Hope and Joy for Children, a

non-profit that aims to provide those living in poverty with their basic necessities. Millions of people have been experiencing regular food crises, lack of freshwater, destroyed shelter and no medicine. Hope and Joy donated $16,000 to Save the Children, an international humanitarian organization.

“My efforts were acknowledged by Disney Youth Service of America and I received the Disney Summer of Service Grant to make a larger impact in my community,” Donthi says. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the money I raised put a smile on hundreds of kids’ faces. Although ending poverty may seem like an undefeatable force too big for one person to make a difference, I am glad to be taking a step in the right direction and changing the world for the better.”

When it comes to who is listening — the She The Change audience is predominantly composed of women up to age 59, with Gen Z and Millennials the largest listenership.

“The audience has grown to thousands of listeners across many countries because of Instagram. Reaching more Gen Zers through the She The Change audience will only increase the number of people who are advocating and initiating change,” says Donthi. “That is all I could ask for.”

The podcast market is flooded, but what sets She The Change apart is it’s one of the only podcasts hosted by a teenager.

“And to my knowledge, the first podcast

produced with the aim of empowering Gen Z girls to advocate for change, take up leadership positions and empower others,” Donthi says.

The podcast host is filled with humility and gratitude as she reflects on how She The Change has really resonated with people.

“I could not have grown (it) to the scale it has without all the amazing supporters and listeners who share the episodes with their friends and family to extend the impact of She The Change,” says Donthi. “People around the world are taking a leap of faith; I couldn’t be more proud to see girls like me reaching out of their comfort zone and fighting for what they believe in.”

After every episode, the podcast host hopes listeners come away feeling motivated and inspired by the discussion.

“I love to see that inspired feeling translate into action, where the listener takes the knowledge she gained from the episode to initiate change within their community,” Donthi says.

SNAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown Celebrates Its 15th Year

By Steve Sears NAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown has been doing good for 15 years.

“We may be in Morristown, but we have never turned anyone down. We have participants and mentors that come from all over Morris County,” says Kimberlee Strasser, SNAP program coordinator. “Which kind of goes along with our theme that we are very inclusive, and accepting, and we would never turn anybody down.”

SNAP was created in 2006 by brothers Matt and Zach Certner when they were in high school. It enables special needs kids to enjoy the camaraderie of sports. Matt was a sophomore in high school, was athletic, knew someone who had special needs, and realized that even though he himself personally had athletic programs to engage in, the other individual had no place to turn to after school. Rounding up some of his basketball buddies, they got together with the special needs person, who then got his own friends involved. “SNAP was basically born as a result of him wanting to Photo courtesy of SNAP make this equal,” says Strasser.

In the beginning, SNAP was a nightly occurrence. Many volunteers took part in yoga, arts & crafts, swimming, and more, and then Matt went off to college and his brother, Zach, took the reins, and he brought on an educational

piece focusing on awareness of special needs.

When Zach when off to college, Matt and Zach’s mom, Sandy, asked Kimberlee is she’d like to take over the program, which is now a once-a-week event. Strasser, who is fond of the awareness portion of the program especially because she is a mom to a 24-yearold son with severe autism, but also taught special education and first grade, hopped on board. “Getting out into the schools,” she says, “and teaching the kids what autism is, teaching the kids what different disabilities are.” The latter is started in third grade, where there are four different stations at which students are taught about the different disabilities. “They (the kids) get to feel what it’s like to be different.”

Strasser cites outstanding student mentors that take part in the program, one of which is junior Alex Grayzel of Morristown Beard High School. “I’ve been with the program for four years, and I’m now one of the head mentors of the program,” he says. “The reason why I love SNAP is because I get to play and bond with kids who have special needs who might not get that chance outside of SNAP. Seeing all the kids laughing and smiling while playing makes me really happy and that’s why I participate in the program. I dedicate my time to continued on page 24

A History of Morristown Municipal Airport

By Henry M. Holden n the early 1930s, Morristown Airport was situated on a 280-acre tract of land occupied by the Normandy Water Works, on the Columbia Meadowlands.

Because the Great Depression little activity took place on the airfield. Then, in 1933, the federal government provided funds for airport improvements under the Works Project Administration.

The improvements were in preparation for an expected Zeppelin base, fueled by the commercial German dirigible traffic between Europe and America. On October 7, 1936, the German Zeppelin Hindenburg flew over the Columbia Meadows. Speculation had it that Morristown would be the future eastern American terminal for the transoceanic flights of the Graf Zeppelin Company. The crash of the Hindenburg ended all discussions of a Zeppelin base.

During World War II, Morristown Airport conducted an army primary flight training center. For more than two years, the airport had been conducting a Civilian Pilot Training Program, a program that anticipated the coming war and the need for pilots.

Near the end of World War II, the Army returned the airport, now worth $1.5M, to Morristown. In 1947, Morristown put

$60,000 into the purchase and installation of hangars.

Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) began welcoming aviation companies to Morris County. At the time, these firms made Morris County a leader in research and development of aviation technology.

With the settlement of thousands of employees, satellite industries and companies began settling in and around Morristown.

Morristown, the County Seat for Morris County, attracted a population growth for decades. Zoning suits were thought to be the most effective way of limiting the airport’s expansion and the noise.

In a 1956 suit against Morristown, by Hanover Township, the township argued that the airport “is a business pure and simple” and “entitled to no greater sanctity than a private corporation.”

Morristown responded, “the airport served an essential governmental function serving the public need and … is immune from the zoning power of Hanover Township.” A unanimous ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in favor of the airport.

Breslow, a native of Chicago, begins his abstract sculptures with striking boulders and stones whose shapes inspire his steel structures. His goal is to encourage viewers to appreciate a common connection to nature and affirm the ability to shape our world in exceptional ways.

Breslow earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois. His interest in design and fascination with form and construction led him to a 41-year career designing children’s toys and games. He was president and CEO of Big Monster Toys until 2008, when he chose to pursue his passion of sculpting full-time. His work has been exhibited in Chicago at Willis Tower, the International Sculpture Outdoor Exhibition, the Chicago Flower and Garden Show, and One of a Kind Show

at The Merchandise Mart.

“Gabriella” by James Tyler is comprised of 300 handcarved ceramic bricks. It is the second of Tyler’s work on exhibit in A Sculpture Trail. “Brickhead Iyemoja,” installed earlier this year, represents a stylized figure from the Yoruba religion of West Africa. Tyler’s “Brickhead” installations are larger-than-life ceramic heads fashioned from bricks that are reassembled using stainless steel pins.

Tyler received his MFA from Hampshire College, Massachusetts. His work has been exhibited across the United States. In 2006, he was appointed the first Executive Director of the GAGA Arts Center in Garnerville, New York, A Sculpture Trail is being curated by Scott A. Broadfoot of the Broadfoot & Broadfoot Gallery in Boonton, New Jersey. Chairpersons of the project are Stuart Reiser, a partner in the firm Shapiro, Croland, Reiser, Apfel & DiIorio and

pro bono attorney for the Friends of Laurelwood Board of Directors, and his wife Leslie, both long-time Pines Lake, Wayne residents. Instead of sitting on the gym floor watching their kids play sports, she wanted to give them comfortable seating in their own space and soft music and snacks – let them really relax during this very short period of time during the week.”

“I love this program,” says Strasser. “I love what it’s doing for our community. Just to have the community rallying for SNAP and talking about it is all I could really ask for.”

Modern Acupuncture – for All Who Need Relief, and to Relax, Restore, and Revive

By Steve Sears lorham Park resident and Modern Acupuncture franchisee, Joan Arata, saw the writing on the wall: the possible end of her sales career.

“Years ago, I started thinking about what was going to be my next life,” she recalls. “I knew I had a shelf life in corporate America, and I was quickly approaching that ceiling.”

Through a friend, she heard about a franchise called The Joint, which is in the chiropractic field. Initially she opted not to get involved, but ran into the group a few years later, and they were talking about acupuncture. Arata’s thirsts were fueled. “Wow,” I said, “acupuncture. Now that’s an idea I can really get behind because I’ve been a big fan of acupuncture for many years.” It was a new concept started by some of the original founders of The Joint, so I knew they had experience with this business model.”

Arata visited the Scottsdale, Arizona home offices and planned on buying two licenses. She told her son, who had a sleep issue, to try it. He did, and two weeks later called his mom and said, “Mom, I went and got acupuncture. I have to tell you – I’ve never slept like this in my life.” He was sold, so they decided to go into business together. They own five licenses but, currently, are only open in Florham Park and in SoHo in Manhattan.

Arata’s job layoff occurred right thereafter. “We had just started construction in Manhattan and had just agreed to purchase here (Florham Park). So, it kind of became the perfect time for me to be able to focus on getting these two locations going.” Both locations opened in January 2020, then were forced to close in March due to COVID-19. Florham Park reopened on June 22, and SoHo after the 4th of July weekend. There are two acupuncturists now at each, and although both sites are open limited hours, Arata hopes a current uptick in services continues and both locations can reopen for regular hours.

Acupuncture has been around over 2,500 years, but there is still a hesitation to try it.

“When people ask me if it’s going to hurt,” explains Arata, “I will not tell them it’s not going to hurt. You know something’s happening, but once the needle is in, you don’t feel it. When the

needle comes out, you don’t feel it.” The needles used are thinner than a piece of thread, or the size and thickness of a piece of hair.

Acupuncturists will explain to the patient how the science of acupuncture works. “The needles have a 20-minute cycle,” explains Arata. “Those needles have to be in you for 20 minutes for them to impact the neural pathways. Less than that, you didn’t finish the job; more than that, you can overexcite.” Arata also mentions that, in order for the neural pathways to truly change, you have to do acupuncture more often when starting out, “so that the neural pathway understands you’re changing it. Once it’s changed, you can come less frequently in order to sustain it.”

The 1970s brought the jet age and further development.

As the economy and airport grew, so too did noise and air traffic complaints. Neighboring towns continued their pressure to restrict airport growth. Each request for improvements was met with protests and threats of lawsuits. MMU would learn to ask for all it could get, and settle for what it

needed. Other efforts, such as the demand for commercial passenger service would remain an unobtainable dream.

The 1970s, also saw work underway to extend the major runway. Engineers dredged a swampy area, moving over 1.7-million tons of mud, and earth for the runway. They installed a new instrument landing system and other improvements related to safety.

Airshows continued sporadically until Sunday, June 12, 1983 when a single engine experimental aircraft had both

wings separate in flight, over the runway, and in front of an estimated 15,000 spectators. The crash was later ruled pilot error because the pilot exceeded the 200-mph speed limit for the homebuilt aircraft. The accident, and other logistical issues permanently ended the possibility of future airshows.

With its continual growth and maintenance expenses, the people of Morristown wondered; would the airport continue to pay for itself, or would the taxpayers, foot the bill? By 1960, they earned a profit of $70,000. This trend did not continue. In 1982, Morristown leased the management of the airport to DM AIRPORTS, LTD. By 2002, there were several hundred aircraft based at MMU including jets, helicopters, and turboprops. Today it is the third busiest airport in New Jersey; surpassed only by Newark-Liberty International Airport, and Teterboro. Over the last three years, the number of airport movements has been increasing from 75,356 in 2017, to 82,900 in 2019.

As a General Aviation Reliever Airport, MMU accepts private, corporate, air taxi, air ambulance, training, and military aircraft. The majority of New Jersey’s business fleet is located at Teterboro and MMU. In 2000 there were 325 aircraft based at MMU and in 2019 there were 241.

In addition to being a major transportation asset, MMU is also a major economic asset to Morris County. It supplies an estimated $13 million in tax benefits to the community.

Today MMU covers 638-acres. Physical constraints of the wetlands and permanently preserved open space eliminates the potential for future runway expansion.

5 Fall Tips for Protecting Your Pet’s Health Whether fall is when you switch out your exercise regimen or schedule your annual flu shot, staying healthy is at the top of most “to do” lists right now. Just remember your four-legged family members when considering seasonal changes to your wellness program. Fall is the perfect time to take steps to keep pets healthy, too.

1) Plan that vet visit. Annual check-ups that include immunizations, physical exams, routine blood work and prescription refills are as important to pet health as they are to human health. Routine wellness visits can also save pet-care dollars in the long run through preventive care and early disease detection. If your pet missed his or her annual check-up last spring, consider getting that visit rescheduled. Most veterinarians offer pet wellness appointments with curbside drop-off and pick-up to help safeguard owners’ health.

2) Get off the couch. Summer’s heat is giving way to cooler temperatures, so resist the temptation to forgo your dog’s evening walk for yet another movie marathon. Not only will outdoor exercise help whittle your pet’s waistline and promote joint health, but getting outside to enjoy the fall colors can boost your own caloric burn and mental outlook as well.

3) Don’t “fall” back on parasite prevention. Just because you aren’t slapping mosquitoes like you did in July doesn’t mean you should stop protecting your pets from parasites. The American Heartworm Society recommends giving heartworm preventives - many of which prevent a host of common parasites - to dogs and cats year-round.

While heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, it’s nearly impossible to guess when you’ll see the last one in the fall or the first one next spring. Disease-carrying mosquitoes can also survive as temperatures drop by migrating indoors or to protected areas near houses and other buildings.

4) Rethink your pet’s fall wardrobe.

Protective wearables make more than a fashion statement for many pets. Arthritic senior dogs, as well as short-haired dogs or lean breeds that chill easily, will be more comfortable if you slip on a cozy fleece coat when clipping on their leash. Just make sure your pup’s garment has a snug vs. a tight fit - and consider coats with reflective fabric if you favor nighttime walks. And if your fall activities include hunting with your dog, make sure to outfit your four-legged companion with a hunting vest.

5) Hide the Halloween treats. Whether or not your kids go trick-or-treating this

year, you may be making plans to stock up on Halloween candy. Just remember that certain human treats may be toxic to your pets. Chocolate is hazardous to both dogs and cats, sugar can throw off your pet’s electrolyte balance and certain artificial sweeteners can cause liver failure in dogs.

So go ahead and keep the candy to your-

self. Just keep it away from your pets while you’re at it.

By Steve Sears enville resident and rugby star, Tess Feury, remembers the moment distinctly.

“I had given so much time and effort,” she excitedly recalls, “and the first time I got to jog onto that field in the USA jersey at the World Cup in Ireland, and my family was in the stands, it was really an indescribable feeling – just like pure joy.”

“Pure joy.” Those two words define Feury and the life she has lived. You both hear it in and feel it from her voice.

Feury, who was just 18 years old that day in Ireland, is 24 now and a full-time registered nurse at Morristown Medical Center. “Back in March, April, and May it was definitely busy,” she says, referring to the COVID19 pandemic. “It’ definitely slowed down now, but those first couple of months were very busy.”

Feury, in addition to playing rugby since age four, also started playing soccer for the Denville Diamonds at the same age, ran track, and even played in the township basketball league.

However, it’s rugby for which she is famed, and a lot of that credit goes to her dad, who played rugby while attending Rutgers University. He then started a family and he played for the Morris Rugby Club men’s team.

“He said, ‘I want my kids to play rugby,’ so he started a youth flag rugby program (called the Denville Dawgs) in Denville, which I think now has expanded to almost ten towns,” Feury says.

Tom Feury indeed sowed the seed of a sport he loved in his daughter’s heart, and her mom, KJ, planted the healthcare seed. “She never actually played rugby,” Feury says, “but with her nurse practitioner background, she’s been like the athletic trainer.” Her older brother, Blaze, played rugby at Penn State, and middle brother, Jake, is a member of Rugby United New York in the Major League Rugby men’s league. He was also both a high Tess Feury playing for the USA Junior All American Team - RJ Photography school and college All-American at Delbarton in Morristown and Middlebury College in Vermont.

For Feury, her childhood is a memorable one. “I absolutely loved growing up in Denville. I love Denville so much. I have my best friends, all the ones I met playing sports in Denville as little kids. I just think that Denville has such a good community feel. I feel like all through my rugby, I feel like all the things I have accomplished, they have supported me through the whole experience.” Denville Dawgs in the summer was tops. “It’s co-ed, and there’s not many co-ed sports for youths. That was in the summer, it was only eight weeks, it was just like very free-spirited and fun. It was a great way to meet other people and kids in town. It was awesome.”

Flag rugby came to an end when Feury was 14. Because her high school, Villa Walsh Academy, didn’t offer a rugby program, she proceeded to the next realm, the sport’s tackle version, for the Morris Rugby Club – but in her sophomore year of high school. She explains. “To be honest, I didn’t want to go on to play tackle. I was convinced that I wanted to keep playing soccer and give up the rugby thing, and I didn’t actually play rugby my freshman year of high school.” She attended games and the realization hit that she had given up something she had learned to love. “I realized that I was so lucky to play such an amazing sport at such a young age, and why would I give that up?” The transition wasn’t that difficult, and her two older brothers are partly to thank. “They roughed me up a bit,” she says with a chuckle.

When Feury was 18, she was named to the high school All-American team (“The first big thing in the USA level that I had accomplished, and it was really exciting,” she says), and she realized that she could go further in the sport. “The friends I’d make from across the country, the places that I could travel, all of that kind of set my mind that I wanted to do this – play at the highest level that I can.”

She continued to ascend towards the apex. After her senior year of 2014, Feury captained the United States Girls team at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, and then was named a member of the Women’s Junior All-American team. “I spent a month over there (in China),” she recalls. “That was a very cool experience because that wasn’t just a rugby event; there were other sports, athletes from all over the world. And by the end of that year I was named to the Junior All-American team. I kind of graduated my way up from the high school All-American team, and that was also the year, that fall, that I started at Penn State.”

What did that year of accolades showered upon her do for or to her? “Senior year of high school was awesome. Because I was so lucky to start playing rugby so young, I feel like through high school I was kind of forced into a leadership position. I was forced to be a leader from a young age; I was forced to develop those characteristics. The mental strength a leader should have, the communication they have to have, that undoubtably set me up for success – especially leading into that senior year. That senior year I was on Cloud 9. It just can’t get any better,” she says. “I had the amazing support of my family, and I had another four years of college to look forward to.”

continued from page Feury wanted three things in a college: strong nursing and rugby programs, and a school that would give her a ‘college experience.’ Penn State was the perfect fit. “It was funny,” she says, “because when I was talking to the rugby coach at Penn State and said I wanted to be a nurse he said, ‘Oh, we’ve never actually had a nursing major on our team before.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know if that’s good or bad,’” she recalls with a chuckle.

It was incredibly good. The nursing program was a competitive one which required much of Feury’s time, but she was determined and had her eye on the profession she had desired since she was young. Doing rugby and school, however, was a challenge. “I had to prioritize my time. There were times I missed team workouts and had to do them on my own. I really had to have open communication with my professors. Every weekend we’d be leaving for our games and we would leave on Friday and I’d miss all of my Friday classes. For most athletes, they’re able to work around that, but for nursing, the curriculum is pretty heavy.

My professors kind of saw my aspirations with rugby and were able to work with me, which was great.”

“I didn’t sit down a lot,” she adds. “I was either playing rugby, studying, or socializ-

ing, because I didn’t want to miss out on my four years, either.”

While at Penn State, Feury played for the United States in the Women’s Super-Series in Utah, and then also, as previously mentioned, played a year later for the United States Eagles in the 2017 World Cup. She was a collegiate All-American all four years there for national champion Penn State, and in her freshman season, she was named Most Valuable Player in the national championship game.

The air in that Cloud 9 had not dissipated.

Feury’s peak, of course, was stepping onto the field to take part in the World Cup. “The World Cup really left me speechless.
