Wayne Kidney Recipient Lives in Gratitude and Cares for Others
H
By Steve Sears ere’s the story of ‘PJ,’” says Jean Sime of Wayne. “PJ is the name of my kidney. And ‘P’ is for Patricia – my donor’s name - and ‘J,’ Jean, my name.” Sime adds, “I am doing well, knock on wood. It’s been two and a half years now.” More on Patricia – a loving part of this story - in a moment. Sime is a contributor to a book titled Because of Organ Donation. “That book is so important,” she says. “It’s a book with 25 different coauthors where we share our transplant journeys. It’s comprised of not only donors and recipients, but also donor families.” Sime never gave up. She needed a kidney, but she wasn’t ready to accept one from a living door for personal reasons. In 2013, she was diagnosed with end stage renal disease, which basically means her kidneys were not functioning as they should have been. “I had to decide what I wanted to do,” Sime says, “because I couldn’t live without doing dialysis. I had no option.” Sime, who started dialysis in 2015 while still working full time, says that, at that time, she was in a funk, in denial. “It took me a while to actually adjust my attitude and say, ‘You know what? This machine, this treatment, is keeping you alive.’ So I could make the best of a bad situation, or I could be miserable. So I chose to make the best out of the situation.” She embraced the dialysis – and others undergoing treatment at the same time. “I would get to the center early, so I could go to every single patient and say hello to them, not realizing what a difference that made. Some of these folks didn’t have any family who would come and visit them, and sometimes just saying hello to someone would make their day.” It was the start of what Sime calls her “kindness role,” a special care for others in dialysis that would lead her to become a peer mentor for kidney patients. “These folks were your family, they were my dialysis family, and we relied on each other not only for emotional support, but to educate each other.” After being placed on the waiting list for a kidney, Sime one day was having routine blood work done while telling her story to the phlebotomist. That same day, after Sime had departed, the phlebotomist ran into one of her co-workers, a nurse of 40 years at the hospital named Patricia Milford, who was seeking to be a living kidney donor. Her hopes for doing so had been dashed twice, so

Milford was very willing to donate one of her kidneys to Sime. “My phlebotomist called me and left a message on my answering machine,” Sime recalls. “It was like, ‘You’re not going to believe this. I ran into one of my co workers, Pat, and we were talking about you, and she’s considering donating her kidney to you. You’ve got to call her.’ I was taken aback, I’m not going to lie. I was truly taken aback, because now my whole mindset is changing. Glory Days: Wayne Hills High School 2011-2012 Girl’s Ski Team
T
By Steve Sears
he Wayne Hills 2011 girls ski team was the first in the program’s history to win a state title. Peter Strandes, head coach since 2008, says, “That year was a very talented group.” In the state final at Vernon Valley, Wayne Hills bested West Milford. Allison Kowalski, who went on to ski at Penn State University, was a captain. “I think what made a lot of it so special was just most of the girls on the team were all seniors and juniors. So we’d been racing together for three or four years, and there was just a special bond that we had, all having raced together for so long. We were also close and not just teammates, but all really good friends, which made it even more special to me. We just raced so well for each other, and we weren’t just racing for ourselves.” “Ali Kowalski I would say was our best skier,” Strandes says. “We were definitely the most talented team I think.” Among the other talented upperclassmen were Meryl Ryan, Talbot Weston, and Kristen Ascione. “The upperclassmen, those older girls on the team, were just really a confident presence,” says Stephanie Bitcon, now 25, a freshman that season. “They were so calm and just knew what they’re doing, and were
really kind to everybody and just showed us what to do. I think everyone was just very confident and willing to help.” Wayne Hills won both the giant slalom with a time of 5:58.44, and the slalom, clocking in at 8:17.68. The margin of defeat was 24 seconds as Wayne Hills finished in a combined time of 14:16.12 to West Milford’s 14:40:87 Roy Scovil was (and still is) co-coach along with Strandes. “He’s a ski racing legend in New Jersey,” Strandes says of Scovil. “He’s probably one of the most respected ski coaches in New Jersey. I got the kids up to the mountain, coached them, but Coach Scovil is the one that really refined their skiing.” Natalie Mikhol was another freshman on the 2011 team. “I convinced Natalie to join and she had never skied before,” says Bitcon. Scovil took Mikhol under his wing. “He took the time to one-on-one basically do ski lessons with her. Towards the end of the season, Natalie was able to go into gates, and then the next year, she was racing full blown from the beginning of the year.” As for 2012, Strandes, 48, had lost a couple of really good skiers, but had three returnees coming back, which included Bitcon. Also, Allison Kowalski had graduated,

but her younger sister and freshman, Brooke, was now a team member. “Interestingly in 2012,” adds Strandes, “Steph Bitcon - she’s one of the toughest kids I’ve ever coached - broke her hand a few weeks before the state final. And they have a rule in ski racing where you have to go through the first gate and you have to have both your poles. She couldn’t even really hold her right pole; that was the hand

that was broken. So, she kind of just wedged it into her glove, went through the first gate to make it legal, and then just tossed the pole and skied the rest of the run with one pole and with a broken hand.” Wayne Hills repeated that year as state champions, this time defeating Ridge. Strandes sums up both the 2011 and 2012 clubs in one sentence. “Resilient, tough, and just a lot of fun.”

New ShopRite Offers a Wide Variety of Meals To Go
By Lindsey Kelleher rab dinner that’s already precooked on your way home from work. Stop by during your lunch break and get a sandwich from the deli. Need an appetizer for the party this weekend? Pick up some chicken wings already made. Customers can get these items and more at the new ShopRite of Wayne. When the Inserra family built their new mega-sized store at the former Wayne Hills Mall location, their vision was to provide a bevy of on-the-go and more healthy meal options with the health-conscious mind in mind. “In the past several years, we have seen a real shift in consumer interest and demand for healthy food options,” said Inserra Supermarkets CEO Lawrence R. Inserra Jr. “People are increasingly making the connection that food and health are aligned.” Inserra Supermarkets runs ShopRite of Wayne and multiple other ShopRite locations in North Jersey. The new ShopRite has restaurant-quality kitchens staffed by professionally trained chefs. Meals for breakfast and lunch are made ready to eat every day. On-the-go meals are made from scratch on site. Blackened salmon, grilled chicken,
chicken tenders, butternut squash, farro, green beans and lasagna are examples of entrees and side dishes that people can buy if they are looking for a quick and easy meal that doesn’t require kitchen prep work. Just heat in the microwave, on the stove, or in the oven and the meals are ready to eat in minutes. Snacks, soups, salads, and sandwiches are also made ready to eat. “Our ShopRite kitchen made items are popular and in high demand by families, school-aged children, singles and retirees because they are delicious, convenient, healthy and available in a variety of menu options,” said Inserra Jr. The new ShopRite of Wayne is part of a larger project to revitalize the Wayne Hills Mall, which was demolished in 2019 to revamp the site. It was formerly located on Hamburg Turnpike in the Plaza Square shopping center. The new ShopRite opened on Halloween and had a soft grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 29. The store is also part of a bigger movement on Inserra’s part to build larger stores to keep up with a fast-paced society in which people crave quick and convenient options that minimize the amount of time they spend cooking and waiting on-line to pay for their groceries. Restaurant quality kitchens make it

possible to provide customers with meals that are simple, easy, and healthy and the area with self-checkout registers allow customers to scan and pay for their groceries themselves – without help from supermarket staff members. Building restaurant quality kitchens in the new ShopRite of Wayne as well as its other stores is part of Inserra’s move to keep up with customers’ demands for simple, easy, and healthy meal options. Inserra has ShopRites throughout New Jersey, with some of the closest locations to Wayne being in West Milford, Wyckoff, and
Fair Lawn. “We’re happy the Inserra family stayed in town,” said Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Vergano is a longtime resident of town who frequented the former ShopRite and saw the new ShopRite project grow from its beginning. “We look forward to the revitalization of the rest of the mall,” said Vergano. “This is called redevelopment, and this is when it’s done properly and if you look around it couldn’t be done any better.”

Taking a Home Office Deduction
C
A Great Tax Reduction Idea, If Done Right!
loud-based applications, extensive communication channels, and other new technologies make it easier to run your business out of your home. If you qualify, many home business expenses are deductible. Think you might qualify? You must first pass these tests. 1. Trade or business use
test. To qualify for business use of your home you must use part of your home for a qualified trade or business. This profit seeking activity must not be a hobby in the eyes of the IRS. 2. Exclusive use test. You must use part of your home exclusively for your business activity. Blending personal use within the same space
as your business activity can disallow the business use of home deductions, however, there does not need to be a permanent barrier between this space and the rest of the house. 3. Regular use test. In addition to having a qualified business activity in an exclusive area of your home, you must also use it “regularly”

for your business activity. The IRS applies judgment in this area to determine the facts and circumstances around what it deems to be regular use. 4. Principal place of business test. To deduct your home office expenses, the home location must also be your principal place of business. That does not mean there cannot be other business locations, just that your home office must be your primary location. You might also have multiple business activities. In this case, you could meet the test for one of your businesses to qualify to take the deductions. With multiple locations, the considering factors are: • The relative importance of the activities performed at each location • The amount of time spent at each location

Holidays Potentially Hazardous to Pets
any pet parents do their best to ensure optimal health for their companion animals. Veterinary visits, exercise and diet play an integral role in pet health. Pet owners tend to be very selective when choosing commercial pet foods, but sometimes they’re less discerning when they offer scraps of their own food to pets. It can be hard to resist the pleading eyes of a pet looking for a handout from the dinner table. While it is generally fine to offer a tidbit here and there, even small amounts of certain foods can cause illness or even death, and pet owners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with foods that may be hazardous to pets. Some foods people eat can be toxic or even lethal to pets. Avocado, for example, contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, according to the Gateway Animal Hospital. Birds and rodents are also sensitive to avocado poisoning. Grapes and raisins are other seemingly healthy foods that can be harmful to pets. The toxin inside of these fruits is unknown, but grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.
Cyanide is present in the seeds/pits of plums, pears and peaches, making these fruits potentially hazardous as well. The ASPCA lists coffee, caffeinated products and chocolate as dangerous for pets as well. These items contain substances called methylxanthines that, when ingested by companion animals, can cause vomiting, panting, hyperactivity, tremors, and seizures. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. Baking chocolate is the most toxic kind of chocolate to dogs. Foods and products artificially sweetened by xylitol will cause insulin release in many species, and this can lead to liver failure. Keep pets away from chewing gum, candy and toothpaste. Common herbs like onions, chives and garlic can cause gastrointestinal irritation and may lead to red blood cell damage. Cats are more susceptible than dogs to these foods, but each species can be affected negatively. continued on page 9

Passaic County is Preventing Evictions with $33 Million in Relief for Tenants and Landlords
overnor Phil Murphy’s moratorium on residential evictions will end soon, and Passaic County’s commissioners are working hard to make sure the next COVID19 crisis isn’t a crisis of evictions and housing instability for families. The County Commissioners have set aside at least $33 million from the 2020 CARES Act and President Joe Biden’s 2021 American Rescue Plan, as a fund to help renters who lost work due to the coronavirus pandemic. In most cases, the program can pay 100% of eligible tenants’ rent, covering the period from March 2020 to the present. “We are trying to prevent the public health crisis of 2020-2021 from turning into a housing crisis in 2022,” said Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett, who meets weekly with the team of professionals that lead the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). “In addition to rental relief from March 2020 until today, eligible tenants can also receive ‘wrap around’ services including job placement, education, and help paying for utilities,” Bartlett explained. “This assistance is made available through Passaic County’s Human Services Department, Board of Social Services, the Passaic County Community
College (PCCC), and other offices.” Through September 2021, more than $3.4 million of rental assistance was paid to landlords, helping 514 families stay in their apartments. “Both tenants and landlords are essential to our local economy,” said Passaic County Commissioner Cassandra “Sandi” Lazzara, who has helped develop Impact Passaic (www.impactpassaic.com) as a one-stop outreach location for county residents to research and apply for available services. “Through ERAP we will put money in landlords’ pockets while providing tenants and their families with housing stability while they get back on their feet.” Either the landlord or the tenant can begin the application process online at www. impactpassaic.com, and receive help and ask questions by telephone at 862-657-5797 (9am-5pm M-F, with extended hours until 8pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Once both landlord and tenant have provided their information, the County evaluates tenants’ eligibility based upon income limits (see chart) and whether the tenants suffered a loss of job or work time due to the COVID19 pandemic. The program’s rules are less restrictive
than other similar programs. For example, rental assistance is available regardless of tenants’ immigration status or history of contact with the criminal justice system. Landlords are paid promptly, in exchange for promising not to lock-out their tenants for at least three months. Landlords are still free to apply for other assistance programs, like the State’s business grants, just not to receive more than 100% of the rent they’re owed. ERAP is Impact Passaic’s first major project, recognizing housing security as essential to the quality of life of all Passaic
County residents. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the fundamental need for affordable housing. The Passaic County Emergency Rental Assistance Program, in coordination with wrap-around services, will begin to address the County’s larger need for affordable housing and homelessness prevention. Preventing Evictions... continued from page 10 faith based and community members. It was established in the fall of 2020 to identify, develop and implement strategies and systemic solutions to identify the unmet needs of Passaic County residents. The end goal is to provide individuals, families and communities with the knowledge, resources, and skills to successfully support themselves, their families and community members from birth to the end of life. As it considers how best to help all Passaic County residents recover from the pandemic and build brighter futures, the Council’s most significant findings concern income disparities across the county and how they are reflected in symptoms of distress. More than 2,600 Passaic County residents took part in a Needs Assessment and four areas of unmet needs were identified as the most critical: Housing insecurity: a lack of affordable housing puts struggling families and individuals at risk of homelessness Poverty: income insecurity leads to food insecurity, difficulty accessing healthcare, and other basic challenges Drugs and mental health: especially the Opioid Crisis, and people who need but cannot access Behavioral Health support
and treatment Communication about available resources “A systemic approach to change includes both short term and long-term solutions,” County Commissioner Lazzara explained. “The Passaic County Collective Impact Council will take a holistic approach, including collaboration across all levels of government, partnerships with non-profit organizations and other community leaders like clergy, and involving individuals and families.” “Like with Census 2020 and other projects, Impact Passaic’s outreach will be in many languages,” Passaic County Commissioner Assad Akhter added. “We recognize that major immigrant populations in Passaic County need to receive information in Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, and other languages, in order to access the services they are eligible to receive.” By starting with housing insecurity, and providing $33 million to help tenants and landlords through ERAP, the County Commissioners hope to prevent a crisis of evictions and foreclosures so all Passaic County residents can recover and thrive in the years ahead.

Ringwood Man Realizes Dream by Volunteering for NASA
F
By Steve Sears or 70-year-old, Michael Greene, it has been a love affair with space exploration since childhood. “I’ve been interested in the space program since it really hit me when I was in third grade, at School #20 in Paterson,” Greene says. “It was just a few weeks after the original seven (Project) Mercury astronauts were announced; that was in April 1959. I don’t remember that press conference, but just about a week or two later - I don’t know if you remember, but there used to be a school newspaper called My Weekly Reader? It would come out every week in a newspaper form. This was for children in grade school.” When Greene eagerly snatched up a copy of that particular issue, the sevenyear-old saw a picture of the astronauts on the front cover and, while reading the article, learned that one of the group, Wally Schirra, was from Oradell, New Jersey. It thrilled him. “I just was hooked, and I just followed the program since then through now. It has just enthralled me basically my entire life, and it took me until I was 67-years-old when I was finally able to join the Ambassador program.” Greene is now a volunteer Solar System
Ambassador for NASA. “I was notified of my selection on Christmas Eve of 2018, and I officially became one in early 2019.” For Greene, it was a nice Christmas present. “One of the best ever,” he says. “I haven’t stopped smiling since.” Greene, who has lived in Ringwood for 40 years, is originally from Paterson, his interests always in science and history. He was a Botany major while at Rutgers University in Newark, and he worked in pharmaceutical industry laboratories and sales until his 2017 retirement. Now, he educates audiences from school children to adults about the NASA space program’s history and its current endeavors. “For myself, I would say I hope to continue doing this as long as I can,” Greene says. His latest presentations were on November 4th, when he presided over “An Introductory Journey to The James Webb Space Telescope” for the Wayne Public Library, and a Wanaque Public Library “NASA 1973 – 1977: The Post-Apollo Area” program on November 23. “I’m sure I’m one of the older members of the Ambassador group, though I know there are some people who are older than me, and I don’t know every single person. Of course, there’s over 1,000 of them. We speak amongst ourselves and

post internally about our own programs. I’m really excited and surprised by the wealth of knowledge a lot of these people have.” He then adds with a chuckle, “I thought I was kind of an unofficial expert, but some of them blow me away.” Greene, who has been married for 40 years to his wife, Nancy, and is the proud father of three children (Amy, Sara, and
Andrew) speaks to the future of NASA. “It’s something that continues to inspire and give hope,” he says happily. “And it’s a unifying thing for the nation. It’s going to be an amazing next 20 to 30 years.” More information about Greene and the NASA Solar System Ambassador program can be found by visiting www.solarsystem. nasa.gov/ambassadors/1882/.

A Winning Recipe to Feed Game Day Fans
ettling in for an afternoon of gridiron action calls for football food from dips and appetizers to full-blown feasts. Whether you’re a diehard fan, casual observer or just there for the game time grub, a full day of “homegating” requires flavorful eats to refuel the crowd. One of the easiest ways to take your menu from benchwarmer to superstar status is to add foods from one of the country’s top authentic Mexican food brands, Cacique, to your playbook. For example, flavor-packed, heaping Cheesy Chorizo Nachos can score a touchdown at your gathering, even among the pickiest of fans. When the game is on the line, call on this dish to keep your team satisfied from kickoff to the final whistle. Made with crumbly, creamy, pleasantly milky queso fresco; authentic real cheese queso dip that’s ready in minutes; robust, spicy pork chorizo; fresh-tasting Crema Mexicana; and small-batch homestyle salsa, this shareable dish can feed a houseful of hungry fans. Ready in less than an hour, it’s a perfect solution for pregame baking so it’s ready just before the coin toss.
To find more game day recipes, visit CaciqueInc.com. Cheesy Chorizo Nachos 1 package Cacique Pork Chorizo 1 package Cacique Queso Blanco Queso Dip 1 can (15 ounces) refried beans 2 tablespoons water, plus additional, if necessary 1 bag (12 ounces) tortilla chips 1 package Cacique Ranchero Queso Fresco 1/2 cup Cacique Crema Mexicana 1 large jalapeno, sliced thin 2 radishes, sliced thin fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish guacamole, for serving Cacique Mild Homestyle Salsa, for serving In large nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast-iron pan over medium-low heat, cook pork chorizo, using spoon to break it up. Stir regularly until completely warmed through and deep brown, scraping crispy bits from bottom of pan. Microwave queso dip 2-3 minutes until heated through. In medium bowl, thin refried beans with water. Beans should be thick but
nearly pourable; add additional water 1 tablespoon at a time, if necessary. Heat oven to 350 F. To assemble nachos, add half the tortilla chips to 13-by-9-inch rectangular baking dish. Use spoon to drizzle half the queso dip and half the refried beans evenly over chips, distributing as evenly as possible. Sprinkle with half the crumbled queso
fresco. Repeat with remaining chips, queso dip, beans and crumbled queso fresco. Bake 5-8 minutes until crumbled queso fresco softens and queso dip is creamy. Remove from oven then drizzle with crema Mexicana and scatter pork chorizo over top. Garnish with sliced jalapenos, radishes and fresh cilantro. Serve with guacamole and salsa. (Family Features)

Sister Cities: Wayne, New Jersey, Meet Wayne, Oklahoma
Photos courtesy of the Town of Wayne, Oklahoma.
I
By Steve Sears f you really want to learn about Wayne, Oklahoma, speak to Miss Elaine Arnold, a former school teacher and Mayor of the town. When mentioned that there are significant differences between her little town and Wayne, New Jersey, she responds while laughing, “Oh my, you don’t know!” Here are some rough numbers. Wayne, New Jersey is about 25 square miles. While in Wayne, Oklahoma you can walk the whole, one square mile length in 15 minutes. “That’s exactly right,” Arnold says. Populations? How’s this for a disparity? About 55,000 residents to 700. “I have records that show that we started having meetings at the City Council in the 1890s,” Arnold says about her town’s humble beginnings. However, Wayne, Oklahoma was officially platted in 1902, so perhaps a special 220th anniversary celebration is in order. Arnold, who is originally from Wayne and after a brief period away moved back in 1977, speaks to the sister city’s early years. “When the railroad came through, the men who worked on the railroad were from Pennsylvania, and they named the town from where they were from. And so, they had a Wayne, Pennsylvania, and you can see it on the map. People wanted to believe that it was from Mad Anthony Wayne, but they said it really wasn’t. It was just from the railroad workers.” Wayne, Oklahoma is nestled in McClain County. Route 77 runs through it, Route 59 along the southern border. “Since I’ve lived here most all my life, I know so many people,” Arnold says. “I know several generations of people, and I just like the feel of a small town. I like the little businesses here. We try to trade here as often as we can.” Wayne, Oklahoma is still a very rural
place, while our Wayne is a major location with plenty of roadways and eateries of every kind. Not so in Wayne, Oklahoma. There is no lodging in town (you have to travel outside of town), but there is a new, nifty little place to eat. “It’s somewhat recent,” Arnold says of The PitStop Café, which is owned by Robert and Barbara Harper. “It just came in the spring, and we needed it so badly for somebody to just get a hamburger. And now we have it, and everybody is so pleased about it that we don’t have to drive seven miles to Purcell to get something to eat.” “We sell only fresh local beef from a independent butcher shop,” Barbara Harper says. “I shop each day for the freshest vegetables I can find. We love the town of Wayne and the community around us. Our message is, ‘Remember Jesus loves you, and so do we. We were called to Wayne by God to spread his word and to show his love.’” Wayne, Oklahoma is also home to a wonderful farmer’s market. “Just certain times of the year, and they have very good products,” Arnold says. “They have not only their fresh squash and cantaloupe and watermelon and things like that, but they also have things that the women have made. There’s one woman that makes the most wonderful salsa in the world. People come here from quite a distance to buy it when she has it. And she’s one of my students, too. We have something called Chow Chow. We don’t like relish – we like Chow Chow.” There are no nature areas in Wayne, but there is a town gathering spot called Linville Park. “(Named) just for a lady that lived here,” Arnold explains. “And she was a real community worker, and we named the park after her. We put up our Christmas display usually days after Thanksgiving. We decorate the park and then we turn on the lights and have a little ceremony and the countdown.” Miss Elaine Arnold reflects proudly about
her home. “Back in the 1800’s, a group of people came through here with covered wagons and horses from the East. They were on their way to California because they just had the ‘49 Gold Rush and they wanted to go out and get a bite of it. And so, they came through the town on what is now highway 59, and as they went through the town, history says that they said if they didn’t strike it rich in California, they would come back here because they loved the land. We’re
near the river and the land is very good for farming. And some did; they came back here and started little farming plots. They said this is a place they’d want to be, and I guess if that was true in the 1800s or 1849, I guess it’s the same today. I like to think of it as this is the place for those of us who’ve lived here so long, that this is the place we want to be.” For more information, visit www. townofwayneok.org.

Q & A with ShopRite of Wayne’s Executive Chef John A. Ramirez
he holidays are here, and we all know what that means: time to head to the store and start shopping. The holidays are a time for seeing family and friends. They are also a time for cooking and eating. People experiment with new recipes they haven’t tried before. Others want food that’s already made and ready to serve. Wayne Life interviewed Executive Chef John A. Ramirez about what the holidays mean to him and how he will share his passion for cooking and serving others with ShopRite of Wayne and its customers. What does cooking at ShopRite of Wayne mean to you? My love for cooking started at an early age. My grandmother, my father, my mother they all brought such joy by preparing family meals and cooking for special occasions. Being the executive chef at Inserra Supermarkets and preparing menus and meals lets me bring that same sort of joy to our customers and their families. I enjoy selecting fresh ingredients from our produce, seafood and meat departments and working with our team to ensure that we have everything that our customers need for breakfast, lunch, dinner and large gatherings. And working for a family-owned business is quite special because the Inserra Family supports and cares for all of us like we are family. What are some of the most popular grab-n-go meals people buy and what makes them so popular? When it comes to proteins the herb marinated flank steak tops the list followed by cold fried chicken and grilled
chicken. Rounding out the top 5 are roasted Brussel sprouts and grilled asparagus. Is ShopRite of Wayne preparing any special meals for the holidays? What makes preparing these meals special? We have an extensive catering menu for the holidays and also work with customers on custom menu items. We have complete Thanksgiving Dinners including a Friendsgiving Feast Bundle. We will have an array of side dishes ready to grab and go or special order for Thanksgiving and Christmas including several of my own special recipes like cheddarscallion au gratin potatoes. We will have fresh turkey gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted fingerling potatoes, and a list of family favorites such as macaroni and cheese, wild rice pilaf, corn bread and sausage stuffing, green beans almondine, roasted brussels sprouts, grilled asparagus, roasted butternut squash, roasted root vegetables, specialty cheese platters, charcuterie platters, shrimp platters, salads, fresh baked pies, cornbread, and fresh cranberry sauce. We really can make virtually anything and everything our customers would like for the holidays. They can stop in, call or order online too. Cooking for the holidays and preparing meals, menus, and dishes for our customers to celebrate the holidays is really what makes me and our team of chefs’ smile. We know that we are helping other families get together and share memories of food, fun and love! And if we are helping with the cooking, they have more time to spend with the people they love!

Former Wayne Hills Soccer Star Contributes to Rutgers First Ever Big Ten Conference Title
R
By Steve Sears utgers University freshman, Courtney Ruedt, has lived a wonderful soccer life. A varsity soccer letter winner for four seasons and a team captain at Wayne Hills High School, Ruedt also from her freshman to her senior year was a first team All-Big North Conference and First Team All-Passaic County selection, and was twice a New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association (NJGSCA) All-Stater. Now, she can type something else into her soccer resume. Ruedt is a member of the Rutgers University women’s soccer team, which this fall won the first ever Big Ten conference title for the school in any sport. “It’s an honor to be part of the program,” Ruedt says, “especially being the first Big Ten championship team here. It’s pretty incredible. We’ve worked hard since preseason. Every single person on the team has put effort into it, and it’s really been a journey since the first day of preseason. We never stopped working hard towards this goal. It’s just such an achievement.” Ruedt started playing soccer as early as three-yearsold. “That was definitely my favorite sport,” she recalls. “Growing up, I tried a bunch of different sports, but soccer was my favorite.” She also played basketball when younger, and at Wayne Hills was a track star. “I ran the 400 and I did win that in the counties in (my) sophomore year,” Ruedt says proudly. “I do love track, though. I definitely
miss running.” And she loves being at Rutgers. “I was looking at a lot of schools,” Ruedt admits. But the Scarlet Knights won out, and for a few good reasons. “First off, Rutgers playing in New Jersey is awesome for me; my whole family could come to games. Also, just in general, academics is always something I valued, and Rutgers is a great academic institution. But one thing I definitely would say is I really believe in this program. I thought to myself, ‘There’s no better place to be than here. We’re going to have such a talented team.’” The Scarlet Knights ultimately lost in the Big Ten Tournament, but the future for herself and the team per Ruedt looks bright. “I’ve worked super hard this year,” she says. “I mean, my preseason was really good. I came in really fit.” She cites senior leadership as being monumental this past fall. “I think that was also a special part of this year, having so many talented seniors back. That was great.” But graduation looms for the team’s senior members, and Ruedt and the younger players are being thrust into more of a lead role. “I think that we have big shoes to fill,” she adds. “As a young team, we definitely have to understand we have a lot of seniors leaving. They were players that had a huge impact on every single game, and if they’re not going to be here next year, we have to just rise up and do the same thing that we did this year.” Photo credit: Rutgers Athletics.

A Christmas Story
T
By Richard Mabey Jr. he Christmas of 1962 showed me the kindness and appreciation of a dear and kind friend and classmate. I was nine years old and in Mrs. Jacobchick’s fourth grade class. I sat in the middle of the classroom, Pamela Rawlings sat next to me. In early December, Mrs. Jacobchick had all of us draw names from a shoebox. As if the odds were a million to one, I chose my old best friend, Stuart Steinhauser. Unbeknownst to me, Pamela Rawlings picked my name from the box of folded papers. I remember that I bought eight comic books for Stuart. I am positive that two of them were Batman and Superman titles. I’m pretty sure that two other comic books were Flash and Superboy. I’m not sure at all, about the other four comic book titles. I remember in early December, walking home from school, and I had a whole, paper dollar in my pants pocket. I went into Moe’s Sweet Shop, with the intent to buy comics for Stuart. I remember it being such a magical moment in time. I had never bought eight comic books, at one time, any other time in my entire life. It was just a monumental moment. I remember when I carried the stack of
eight comic books to Moe’s cash register. It’s so funny, the things you remember. I remember Moe saying to me that it looked like I was going to read a lot of comic books that night. I confessed that I did read all of those eight comic books, before I wrapped them up in brightly colored Christmas wrapping paper for my old friend, Stuart. For the next few weeks in December, I wondered and wondered who could have picked my name from Mrs. Jacobchick’s shoe box of hand-written names. What I was about to find out, as to who picked my name from the box, would touch my heart, all so very dearly. In 1962, Christmas fell on a Tuesday, which meant that more than likely Mrs. Jacobchick had us exchange gifts on the Friday before Christmas, since we probably had the entire next week off from school. Our little fourth grade Christmas party was a happy and joyful little celebration. My mom was the Class Mother for our class. Mom had baked a lot of Christmas cookies for our little party. And we had plenty of apple juice to drink. My mom did come to the little party, to help Mrs. Jacobchick hand out the cookies and pour the apple juice for the children. I was lost for words when Pamela

1962 was very much representative of the height of the era of the baby boomers. I remember that there were well over 35 children in Mrs. Jacobchick’s fourth grade class. Although this is not a photo of my fourth-grade class, it is amazingly close to how that classroom looked.
Rawlings looked at me, from her desk which was right across from me, and simply said “Merry Christmas, Richie!” And I then said “Merry Christmas” to Pamela. Then Pamela handed me a colorfully wrapped Christmas gift. It all felt like a dream! Cute Pamela Rawlings was the one who picked my name from the shoebox, vastly full of handwritten names. I remember thinking to myself, “of all the names in that were in that shoebox, sweet Pamela Rawlings chose my name! It was a religious experience for me! I just sat there looking at Pamela’s gift for me. I remember Pamela saying to me, “Richie, aren’t you going to open it?” And, I think I said something like, “oh, yea, open it up, right….” I carefully removed the brightly colored wrapping paper from Pamela’s gift. And, lo and behold, there it was, a handmade pencil holder. Obviously it was constructed from a soup can or a vegetable can of some kind. The tin can was carefully covered with colorful construction paper. All the while
I was looking at that beautiful homemade pencil holder, I kept thinking to myself, “Pamela Rawlings made a pencil holder for me… me….. me!” I thanked Pamela. She asked me if I liked it and I told her that I just loved it. I then turned to my left-hand side, looking toward the back of the classroom, Stuart was looking at the covers of his eight comic books. He sent me a big thumbs up, along with a big smile. It was such a memorable little classroom Christmas party. Here’s the amazing thing. I still keep in touch with my old friend, Stuart. And, just a few years ago, I was reunited with my old friend, Pamela, through a common friend. The odds were a million to one that Pamela and I were able to find each other, after having lost touch with each for a little over 45 years! The friends of early childhood are truly, the dear and beloved friends. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He can be reached at richardmabeyjr@ hotmail.com. I Remember Dad: Hold Dear To Heart, This Cherished Heritage
O
By Richard Mabey Jr. ne of the most powerfully positive influences upon my beloved father was his grandfather, William H. Mabey. Sadly, my great grandfather passed away in 1936, about a year after having suffered a stroke. Dad was nine years old, when his grandfather was called Home to be with the Lord. My great grandfather was born on October 15, 1868, at a time when our nation was still healing from the wounds of the great Civil War. Great Grandpa Mabey grew up in a modest home, atop Hook Mountain. The home had no running water, nor did it have an indoor bathroom. In 1892, at the age of 23, Great Grandpa Mabey married Dora Dolson. My great grandmother was born and raised in New York City, in a rather wealthy family. How it came to be that she traveled to Beavertown (the former name of Lincoln Park) and met my great grandfather is unclear. Dora Dolson was 20 years old when she married my great grandfather. Great Grandpa Mabey worked as the Chief Engineer of Incline Plane Ten East. He was a strong, hard-working man. For the first two years of their marriage, William and Dora Mabey lived with William’s parents, William and Catherine Mabey. During those two years, my great grandfather worked
every minute he could, on building a home for his bride and himself. He single-handedly built the home. As a tribute to his carpentry skills, the home still stands today. My dad loved his grandfather, oh so very much. Dad was nine years old when his grandfather passed away. My father often recollected about how devastated he was to lose his grandfather. According to my beloved father, Great Grandpa Mabey was a most incredibly talented story teller. My father often told me how he would gather about his grandfather, sitting on the floor with his brothers and cousins, while Great Grandpa Mabey told dramatic stories of life along the old Morris Canal. I remember, as a child, Dad would often retell these stories. Dad would preface the stories with saying, “of course I can’t tell it quite like my grandpa could. He was quite a story teller.” Now at 68, I so deeply regret that I didn’t take out a pencil and paper and write down those stories. My great grandfather taught my father the treasured principles of farming, specifically the art of successfully growing corn. Legend has it that Great Grandpa Mabey was a great hunter. My dad often told the stories about the days of going on a hunt with his father and grandfather and his older brother, Edward.
There was a great legend of the great buck, whose presence was overwhelming. Dad often told me about the great buck. That his grandfather held a certain reverence and respect for the great buck, and so never raised his rifle sights upon the tremendously large deer. I remember my father telling me about the time he did sight the great buck. He told me that once a man saw the great buck, he was destined to never be the same again. The great buck was the king of the wooded land that ran the forest range, all along the old Morris Canal in Lincoln Park. I have but only one picture of my dear great grandfather. I cherish that photograph, oh so dearly. Whenever I am faced with the dreaded plague of writer’s block, I take out Great Grandpa’s picture from the top drawer of my desk. I look at that photo of my great grandfather, that was taken shortly after he had his stroke. I try my utmost best to be true to Great Grandpa’s love of storytelling. A part of the spirit of my great grandfather lives on in my heart, solely because my dad took the time to share with me his fond memories of the beloved patriarch, who was born just a few years after the monumental surrender at Appomattox. Cherish your unique family history. By all means, please do take the time to pass on your knowledge of your family’s history and legends to the younger ones of your family.

Springfield Man Writes Other’s Stories with LifeStory Memoir
F
By Steve Sears or 43-year-old Richard Squires, Thanksgiving of 2015 will always be special. That very Thursday, his Grandpa Ben asked Squires when he was going to write a story about him. Squires embraced and embarked on the request. The book was printed two days before his grandfather died. There’s sometimes a touch of melancholy. “Come Thanksgiving,” Squires says, “I start to think about that. My grandfather was in the hospital, he had a stroke, and I was there and I was able to tell them that we finished the book and it was at the printers. He wasn’t able to speak, but he could communicate with his eyes, and it was a beautiful moment that I’ll never forget. I could see that he was very happy about it.” 25 copies of the book were printed, and it was the inception of LifeStory memoir. “I gave it out to my cousins, my aunts and uncles, and my brothers. I have a couple copies here, I keep it with me, and I always talk about it. I love to share it because that was before my branding. My books now all have my logo, so it really was the lightbulb moment with my business.” Squires, who has done corporate writing and has taught the writing at both Kean University and Union County College, has written thirty memoirs for clients and is currently at work on six others. Both the initial meeting with a clients and handing them the final product – their own memoir – are equally exciting for him. “When I give them the book - I call it the Big Book Reveal – I like to video it so I capture their expression when they first see it. I capture it on video and
then I have it edited into professional quality, and I’m able to provide that to the clients, also. But that’s just a moment. The interviews are probably my favorite part. What’s so great about it is that they really open up to me, telling me the heart of their lives. And I asked them a ton of questions, and we always have an idea of certain things we’re going to talk about, but then through the questions that I ask, I kind of probe and make certain connections, and they always think of things that they haven’t thought about for years.” A trust is cemented between Squires and those he writes for. “And it really continues on forever,” he says, “because for pretty much all my clients, we become friends. I’m always available to them. They are in touch with me, they may want to do other books, sometimes they want to make a change, or sometimes they have questions for me or they need my help.” Squires work is not limited to memoir writing. Consider his LoveStory keepsake books for those getting married, eulogies and programs authored for funerals, slide presentations, podcast and workshop work. “I offer memoir writing workshops and creative writing workshops,” Squires says, “and that includes the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. And I’m always available to chat with people. I talk with a lot of people who don’t move forward with projects, but I’m always happy to do it. Some people have already done some of their writing or are in different stages. Some people have interviews with family members who have already passed away. I work with all that.” And there is a pressure to get the work done when it comes to memoir work. “There’s this pressure,” Squires says,
Photos courtesy of Richard Squires.
“because for one thing, a lot of my clients are elderly, and I need to get the project done. Time is of the essence. So, there’s that, and just that my clients are waiting on me. And I put that pressure on myself because I believe in customer service. I’m big on that. I want all my clients to be happy, and I’ve had 100% satisfaction; my clients have been happy. And I want to keep going.” Squires is fully committed to his wonderful career. “I am blessed. I figured out a way to do something that I love to do that’s in my skill set, and it’s just amazing. Better than anything I’ve done before.” For more information about LifeStory books, visit www. lifestorymemoir.com. Squires can be contacted at 973-9031487 or Richard@LifeStoryMemoir.com

uring this year’s holidays, many families are looking forward to celebrating a closer-to-normal season. However, that means staying healthy and keeping all kinds of germs at bay, including seasonal cold and flu bugs. “With life getting back to normal, we are expecting a more severe cold and flu season than we encountered last year,” said Dr. Jennifer Caudle, family physician. “It’s important to both take preventative measures and stay prepared for keeping symptoms at bay. I recommend looking for over-the-counter medicines with active ingredients like dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, which help relieve both cough and chest congestion.” Practice good hygiene. Washing your hands has become a common refrain throughout the pandemic because it’s a simple and effective way to keep germs away, whether they’re of the global pandemic variety or a common cold. As you’re out shopping and mingling this holiday season, you’re likely to come into contact with more germ-laden surfaces than usual. Shopping carts, doors and public restrooms are major culprits, so carry sanitizer and be sure to give your hands a thorough wash when you get home.
Keep Healthy for the Holidays Treat symptoms. While addressing the symptoms of an illness won’t necessarily make it go away, it can ease your discomfort while it runs its course. An option like Mucinex 12 HR Extended Release Tablets provides relief for 12 hours by helping thin and loosen mucus to relieve chest congestion. The tablets are also available in a DM formula, which provides relief for both wet and dry coughs. Protect your immune system. A healthy immune system helps your body fight off germs so you don’t get sick, or if you do come down with a cold or the flu, you may have a milder, shorter illness. Getting plenty of rest, staying well hydrated, eating well-balanced and nutrient-rich meals and getting plenty of regular physical activity can all help keep your body in good condition to fight off seasonal germs. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked. There’s hardly anything worse than waking in the middle of the night with a cough or sinus trouble and discovering your medicine cabinet is empty. Be proactive by restocking on over-the-counter basics to help keep your symptoms in check. It’s also a good idea to check the expiration dates of any medications you do have on hand and replace anything that is out of date.

Be mindful of spreading germs. If you do get sick, you can take steps to protect your loved ones. If possible, stay home until your symptoms have passed and you’re less likely to be contagious. Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or sneezing into your elbow if you don’t have a tissue, can be effective in preventing the spread of germs. Know when to consult a doctor. In most cases, minor cold symptoms don’t require a visit to the doctor (unless you think you may
have been exposed to COVID-19 and need to arrange for testing). However, if symptoms don’t resolve within a week, grow worse in a short period of time or aren’t responding to over-the-counter medicines to ease your symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor or at least speak with a triage nurse for advice.
