Wayne Writer Wins Award of Recognition for His Original Film
F
By Steve Sears ormer Caldwell University student and current Wayne resident, Ryan Lesica, was recently presented with an “Award of Recognition” by the Best Shorts Film Competition for his 6:54 film titled Takeoff, which he entered in the LGBTQ film category. Lesica, 27, and his Executive Producer, Michael Brueno, who resides in Chatham and is 29, have joined forces with and are now part of two-year-old United Front Media. “I went to school at Caldwell University, studying Communications, Film, and Media,” says Lesica, who is quick to credit his professors John Yurko and Robert Mann. “They taught me all about film and media journalism, and I took several digital filmmaking courses, kind of integrated with both my passion of film and visual storytelling.” Since then,

Lesica has been working on a variety of different projects, trying to get his hands on experience via many different avenues. “I did a few promotional shorts, I worked on a documentary, I helped film a feature that I helped write, and then got hired on board to Donovan Russo’s United Front media. That’s kind of how I met Donovan and Mike, and his
brother, Sebastian.” From there, the group started collaborating on a few short films, all funded by United Front Media. “And then, with the budget, the dedication, and the reception, Takeoff is really our starting point, our launching pad. And we’re both surprised and pleased with the reception it’s gotten. We definitely want to see where I guess - no pun
intended - this takes off, see where this goes.” Courtesy of Lesica’s YouTube channel, the description of the award winning short is as follows: A pilot and his foreign partner struggle with the limitations of their relationship as distance separates them in more ways than one. that comes from a group that is focused on that—it’s a great honor,” Siqueira says. “This is a wonderful type of recognition to receive right at the start-up phase of our Center, because it highlights the importance of our mission to help individuals launch and develop organizations committed to environmental sustainability and social inclusion.” WP’s new Center aims to empower current students, alumni and members of the general public from diverse backgrounds and industries to create new business ideas and develop socially responsible innovations for their new or existing organizations. The Center also produces research in entrepreneurship and innovation focusing on organizations that alight economic, social, and environmental goals. On February 18, it will launch an online incubator for abilities-inclusive ventures, to benefit individuals who have or would like to start a business to support persons with disabilities. An incubator for women entrepreneurs was launched in October. A specialist in strategic management, entrepreneurship, international business,

Homeowner Alert! Review Your Tax Forms
B
New Tax Rules are Creating Confusion
ecause of new laws many home related tax rules have changed and now require you to prove how funds are used to qualify for a deduction. This is catching many taxpayers by surprise. So when your mortgage company reports tax-related information to you and the IRS using Form 1098, it no longer means all the interest and points reported on these statements are tax-deductible. Mortgage interest deductions have new loan amount limits. For new mortgages starting on or after Dec. 15, 2017, you can deduct interest on up to $750,000 of the loan (down from $1 million for mortgages initiated before Dec. 15, 2017). If your original mortgage is above the threshold, a calculation will be done to determine the deductible amount of interest. You can’t simply deduct the full amount of interest being reported on your Form 1098. Proceeds not used to buy a home add complexity. Proceeds from home equity
debt that are not used to build, buy or substantially improve a qualified home are no longer tax-deductible. This includes mortgage or home equity proceeds used to pay for college expenses, debit consolidation or other purposes. Mortgage companies issuing these loans will still send you a Form 1098, but it’s up to you to prove how you use the funds during the current year and any prior year. Mortgage points requires review of settlement statements. Points are paid as a way to obtain a lower interest rate. Generally, points are deductible in the year they are paid, but they have more restrictions than mortgage interest. Points paid to refinance an existing mortgage, for example, may need to be deducted over the life of the loan. If you bought or refinanced a home in 2018, a review of your mortgage settlement statement may be required to ensure proper tax treatment of the cost of your points.
Mortgage insurance premiums are not deductible. Congress did not extend the mortgage insurance premium deduction for 2018. If you pay mortgage insurance, don’t wait to file your taxes thinking Congress will change their minds. File your taxes on a timely basis and expect to feel the impact of this eliminated deduction. With these changes, properly calculating 2018 mortgage deductions is more complicated. For each Form 1098 you receive, make a note on the form to explain what the loan is for to ensure a proper deduction. Robert P. Wayne Teen Named 2022 Young Adult Honoree for Walk to Cure Arthritis
1
By Steve Sears 5-year-old Wayne teenager, Maria Leo, has been named Young Adult Honoree for the June 5, 2022 Walk to Cure Arthritis in West Orange. “We have been going to the Hackensack University Medical Center since Maria was two, when she was first diagnosed,” says Enrico Leo, Maria’s dad. “I’ve been working with a nurse there who we’ve known all these years, and in the fall she nominated Maria and she asked Maria if she wanted to take the post. We’ve known the nurse and the group there at that practice for a long, long time.” Maria will be heavily involved in preparing for the event with committee meetings, recruiting and fundraising, as well as giving a speech when the June walk completes. Committee meetings began in the fall, and in mid January preparation picked up speed with the formation of subcommittees. Maria, her dad, and also her mom, Joanna, will all be volunteering. In fact, the family took part in the Jingle Bell Run (and walk) on December 4, 2021 at Bell Works in Holmdel.
softball on her high school’s Junior Varsity team. Per her parents, people are always amazed to find out Maria even has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, and although she sometimes feels pain or discomfort, she rarely ever complains or let’s it stop her, she being resilient. The family wishes to truly thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at The Pediatric Rheumatology Department of The Joseph Sanzari M. Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, who introduced them to The Arthritis Foundation “We are extremely proud that Maria has been named this years’ Young Adult Honoree for the West Orange, New Jersey 2022 Walk to Cure Arthritis!” Enrico and Joanna Leo state. “We hope that in Maria being so brave to share her personal experience living with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, that it not only helps to raise awareness but, more importantly, helps to raise funds to support the muchneeded research especially for the children whom have to continue to endure this autoimmune disease. And in doing so, we hope that one day there can truly be a cure!”
Walks are held throughout the year, and the June walk will be held at the South Mountain Recreation Complex. The event is sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Maria is one of 300,000 children or teens that have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. “I would start limping a lot,” she says, “and the area that was hurting was my knees and ankles. We didn’t really know what it was at first because I couldn’t (at age 2) talk and express what I was feeling.” Her pediatrician at that time suspected correctly it might be arthritis, and put Maria on medication, which she stayed on until age seven. Her situation improved, then flared up at age 10 in her right knee. “I woke up one morning and couldn’t walk,” she recalls. She returned to medication and her situation has improved. “I think things are getting better right now with my arthritis, and I’m hoping that there’s no more flare ups soon or anything like that.” Maria is a true inspiration, having participated through the years in such activities as gymnastics and soccer, and last year excelling in her first year ever playing

United States Power Squadron Offers Wayne Writer Wins Award... everybody is going through, the problems cont. from front page short brought to you by United Front Media. that everybody is going through. orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police, Marine Services Bureau approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning Wednesday, March 23, 2022. The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining your New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate, will run every Wednesday evening for six weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the required state examination. The cost of the course is $90.00. Legislation in the state of New Jersey was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation requires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom
study, homework, and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a New Jersey Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when on the waters of the state. Failure to exhibit the certificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. One must be at least 12 years of age to attend the course. Registration is made through the Caldwell/West Caldwell Center for Continuing Education, 265 Westville Avenue, Room 105, West Caldwell, NJ 07006. Register online at www.cwcboe.org/continuinged by using debit or credit card or by mail (print & mail registration form with check made out to CWC-Continuing ED). All calls only after 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 973-228-2092. really Ryan’s pet project,” Brueno says. “He wrote it from the heart, wrote it from experience. I was happy to be on board with the project.” Brueno coordinated actor’s contracts, days of shooting schedules, and more, but the creative mind behind the short was Lesica’s. “Ryan is the brains behind the project and behind the creativity, and he did a fantastic job putting it all together. How it comes across on screen was how his vision intended it.” The film, minus dialogue, focuses on emotion, and Lesica sought a Director of Photography who could tell his story through visuals. He found that photographer in Sam Schmitz, and actors Dante Quevedo and Zach Booth delivered on-camera roles exhibiting great feeling. Noah Russo, Donovan Russo’s brother, contributed a sound and superb musical score that flows with the film and emotion. Takeoff has also been entered in other competitions, and Lesica and team are hoping gold can be struck again. “This kind of goes back to our concept and our vision for United Front Media,” Brueno says. “When we initially got together, we wanted to make projects for everybody: the struggles that
coming together, collaborating from different backgrounds, whatever it may be.” Gratified would best describe the feeling regarding the end result. “To actually put it together and accomplish it,” Brueno says, “and to know how much work you put into it, it’s a very satisfying feeling personally.” For Lesica, he sees his Takeoff win as a true starting point. What was just a hobby but certainly a passion has turned into a career. “I’m sure everyone who ever started down this field did probably small segments or shorts for their friends and their family on their smartphones, their primitive cameras, but certain projects come and go, and certain ideas come and go,” he says. “But to have it really finished, and to have that feeling of accomplishment - the fact that we did this, and the fact that it does get recognized - you feel that we do have something to offer, there is something that we can do, that we do have a knack for this. We want to see moving forward what else we can accomplish, what else we can bring to the industry.” For more information about the Best Shorts Film Competition, visit www. bestshorts.net.

Coping with the Loss of a Pet
T
he strong bonds many people share with their pets can make the death of those pets, be it sudden or expected, difficult to handle. It’s not uncommon to be traumatized when a pet dies, and such grief may be influenced by the pet’s age at the time of its death, the circumstances surrounding that death and the nature of the relationship between the owner and pet. Different pet owners deal with the death of a pet in different ways, but the following are some ways to cope with the loss of a companion animal. Recognize that everyone feels differently. Grief is expressed in many different ways. What one person experiences may not be the norm for another. You may go through a variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your pet, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong the animal’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same oppor-
tunity. Reach out to others. Grief often can turn a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and pet loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly. Create mementos or a legacy for the pet. Creating mementos may help children who are having their own difficulty dealing with pet loss. Work with your child to create a photo album or plant a tree to honor your pet. Dealing with a pet that must be euthanized can be especially difficult. Pet owners can choose to be in the room during the procedure, and that decision should not be made lightly. If you think you can handle it and you want to be there to comfort your pet, then you might be more comfortable continued on page 9

The Sounds of Winter
Loss of a Pet... continued from page 8 being in the room. But being present when a pet is euthanized can be emotional, so give this decision serious consideration. Once a pet has died, many owners debate whether or not to bring a new pet into their homes. Another animal around the house can fill the void created when your previous pet passed away, and some people adopt or buy a new pet before an old or sick pet passes away to make the transition as smooth as possible. A new pet should
only be brought into the home when you’re ready to build a new relationship. Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the owner of the Pequannock Animal Hospital. He grew up in Kinnelon and is happy to be home – with his wife, three cats, and two dogs – to provide quality and compassionate care for pets in the community. The Pequannock Animal Hospital is located at 591 Newark Pompton Turnpike in Pompton Plains. You can reach the hospital by calling 973-616-0400.

By Sally Barmakian he rustling of leaves is no longer. The air is take-yourbreath-away cold. The bears and other animals are hibernating, and birds have flown south for to warmer weather. There is often a heavy silence that permeates winter. When the weather is blustery, people are cozy inside with warm blankets and roaring fireplaces. Fewer people are walking outside, even dogs wear coats as they quickly take their daily stroll. Then it happens: snow. Snow silently falls, feathery and magical, covering cars and rooftops. Changing the grass to a blanket of white, so pure and beautiful. Silence while the snow gently falls for hours. Si-
lence as the activity outside comes to a halt. Silence until the first snowplow or shovel hits the ground. Winter is telling us to hibernate too. Enjoy the warmth of the indoors as we appreciate nature’s rest. Read, draw, knit, cook, write, watch movies, call friends and family, clean out a drawer, start a long-awaited project, play board games, enjoy a warm mug of hot chocolate or a hearty pot of soup. Embrace the stillness. And after a while, the sun comes out and the sky is clear. The desires to ice skate, snowboard, ski, sled and walk in the crunchy snow come to life. Bundled in warm clothing, head out to make a snowman, start a snowball fight or make snow angels. The sounds
of laughter and activity fill the air as nature is full of adventures. Red cardinals perch on snow-covered evergreens. The wind whistles through the bare trees and stings your face. An owl glides overhead on silent wings. Icicles drip from the gutters. The wonders of nature are all around us. Listen for the sounds of winter. Even the silence is beautiful.

Local Mom Authors Trilogy on Autism
I
By: Evan Wechman t’s tough enough for people to survive the loss of their parents or grandparents. However, for local interior designer turned author, Cindy Gelormini, the loss of her beloved son Robbie was both shocking and painful. Robbie was a sweet, loving young son who suffered from Autism and its subsequent seizures. Unfortunately, this led to his passing away in November of 2017 at the age of 21. Many parents would just become hardened or stay in their home all day, but due to Gelormini’s strength and faith, she wanted to teach students, parents, and even other teachers about autism. In early 2021, Gelormini released a trilogy book series titled Robbie’s World and His Spectrum of Adventures! The author who also illustrated the books credited the creation of the series as part of her “ healing process.” Though much of the work was completed during the pandemic, the author remained on task and the words and pictures came easily to her. In her children’s book series, she created the character of Robbie the Penguin who has autism so children can relate to the adventures of Robbie. Some may wonder where the idea of a penguin with autism came from, and Gelormini believes Robbie was trying to send her a message from heaven. Shortly after his death, when his mother went to the group home he was living at to collect his belongings, she found toy penguins almost everywhere. She also found out that the last movie he watched was the classic “Happy Feet.” Gelormini who has a strong Christian faith conclud-
ed “Robbie’s trying to tell me something,” and the idea of the book series was born. During the last year, Gelormini has tried to get the books into the hands of as many teachers as possible throughout the state. She wants to destigmatize some of the negative and incorrect assumptions about autism. Robbie, like many other students with autism were bullied in public schools because they were misunderstood and seen as weird. The local author found that when schoolteachers read the books to their students, they adored Robbie the Penguin. Gelormini said the “kids fell in love with Robbie the Penguin.” In addition to the stories involving Robbie the Penguin, at the end of every chapter, Gelormini offers a segment called “Mom’s Minute”. In this special section, the author explains the real-life events which the story was based on and teaches the readers how autism affects the behaviors of people with this diagnosis. According to Gelormini, the universal message of love is spread throughout her books. Throughout the stories, the mother tells Robbie the Penguin “I love you just the way you are.” This is something the author feels all children can connect with. Unfortunately, many children with autism have confided to the author that they wish their parents loved them the way she loved Robbie. While Gelormini has been promoting her work for over a year now, she is aware there is much more she can do to educate the public about autism. She can be found advocating for parents and children with Autism on her podcast, “Spectrum Perspectives,”. This can be found on Spotify, Apple, or YouTube.

Consider walnuts, which are a heart-healthy food certified by the American Heart Association. More than 25 years of research shows walnuts may play a key role in heart health. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved one of the first qualified health claims for a whole food, finding that eating 1 1/2 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol diet while not increasing caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Additionally, walnuts are the only nut significantly high in omega-3s, with 2 1/2 grams of alpha-linolenic acid per ounce. Walnuts can add this essential nutrient to dishes like these American Heart Association Heart-Check Mark certified recipes for Greek Cucumber Walnut Bites and Banana Bread Overnight Oats. In 2013, they moved back to NJ, where for the next 10 years Russo entered the realm of Executive Chef for a variety of hotels, with The Marriott and The Hilton being a few. “Once the pandemic (COVID-19) came about, I was laid off from my Executive Chef position. At that time, my wife (Christine) and I decided we wanted to go back into business for ourselves. Even though it wasn’t the best time to open a restaurant, our broker found us this fantastic location, so we accepted the opportunity,” Russo says. Russo and his wife became creators and founders of Hoboken’s Pizzeria in Pompton Plains in August 2021. No Matter the Weather, Wayne Crossing Guards Ensure Safety and Love for the Community
By Steve Sears 7-year-old Tony Falcone has been a crossing guard at Wayne’s Theunis Dey School, and currently crosses children at Packanack Elementary School location on Ratzer Road. “I love the children,” he says. “I love the smiles on their faces when I give them a high-five, and I recommend to them to be nice and not to give their teachers a hard time. And when I see the smile on their face, it takes me years back and makes me feel younger.” His care and friendliness are emblematic of school crossing guards in the township of Wayne. Michelle Jones is official supervisor for All City Management Services for Wayne, and she recognizes that being a school crossing guard is much more than just a job. “The guards, they’re part of the community,” she states. “I’m a retired cop, and so I’ve been part of this community for a while, and the guards are like an extension off of that.” On a cold January morning, when wind chills were in the teens, Falcone was bundled in multiple layers of clothing and a jacket, but still smiling, he beaming like the sun on the clear day as parents and children approached. “It’s out in the open, and the wind sometimes blows and it’s very cold,” he says. “When it rains, I approach the kids and drop down the umbrella (over them). I’m not concerned about getting wet.” He then recalls another recent weather event. “One day there was a snowstorm, right when the kids were coming out of school. My main concern was to be sure that the kids were safe. The snow was coming down and the

wind was blowing, but my main concern was that I stopped the traffic and the kids were safe.” Lauri Meyers had two children who attended Packanack
Elementary School. “Tony has approached the job with a lot of joy,” Meyers says. “He enjoys seeing the kids, he takes the continued on page 16

I Remember Mom: The Blessing of the Pink Sprinkling Can
I
By Richard Mabey Jr. n early February of 2003, my mom, Janet Kemmerer Mabey, had just turned 70. It was only the month before that Mom had an eight-hour brain surgery to fill an arterial aneurysm in the Circle of Willis. So, in early February we had a big party for Mom. It served a dual purpose. First, for family and friends to unite to congratulate Mom on her successful brain surgery. And then secondly, to celebrate Mom’s 70th birthday. It was a most wonderful time, a joyous moment, a time for friends and relatives to fellowship and break bread with one another. At Mom’s birthday, there was this little card table set up that abounded with gifts. One of the gifts that Mom received that day was a pink sprinkling can. I confess that I do not remember who gave the sprinkling can to Mom that day. Something I deeply regret now. To say that this pink sprinkling can inspired Mom, is quite an understatement. When Spring Time came, Mom put her new sprinkling can to good work. For throughout the entire front yard, westward side yard, and backyard of the old Mabey Homestead, Mom planted a most breath-taking array of flowers. What I remember most, is the little patch of tulips that Mom planted on our westward side yard. At the time, I was working at an ad agency in East Hanover. I had the benefit that the ad agency began shop at nine o’clock. It was the first job that I had ever had that didn’t begin work at eight o’clock. I remember so very well, just before I would leave for work, Mom would be filling her sprinkling can with water, while humming “Amazing Grace”

most of the time. It is simply a most cherished memory that I hold in my heart, of my beloved mother. As I would drive up Mabey Lane to Route 202, each weekday morning, I would see Mom gently sprinkling water upon the cluster of tulips. We would wave to each other, as I awaited for a break in traffic to begin my journey to work each morning. As simple as this true-life tale is, it holds a most precious and loving memory in the deepest chords of my heart. To this day, I do not know who gave Mom the sprinkling water can for her 70th birthday. However, I do know that it provided a source of great joy to my mom. Whoever gave the sprinkling can to Mom, knew that her outdoor flower gardens were very near and dear to Mom’s heart. I’m all for giving a person one of those gift cards for a restaurant or store. It does give the person the chance to choose what they want to buy at a store or order at a restaurant. However, there’s a lot to be said about sitting down and thinking about purchasing a special gift to give a loved one. I know that this little story will have the chance to be read by many. Perhaps, the very person who gave Mom the sprinkling can will read this little true-life tale. And then maybe the mystery of who actually did give Mom that dear and precious gift will be solved. Stranger things have happened. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He can be reached at richardmabeyjr@hotmail.com. Please put on the subject line: I Remember Mom.

Crossing Guards...
continued from page 14 time to learn most of their names, and he greets them in the morning. He takes that extra minute in the morning to get everyone started off on the right foot.” Meyers also mentions that Falcone acquired cones for his intersection, which can be a tricky one. “He puts up cones along the crossing area to add that extra level of safety.” “I hear from residents about all the positive experiences they are having with their local guards,” says Wayne Councilman at Large, Dave Varano, whose children have been crossed by Falcone. “They are clearly an important part of our community. I applaud and thank them all.” One crossing guard who wished not to be named in this article, also is honorable at his corner at Lafayette School. Parent Sachin Parmar says, “He does a great job working on both sides of the streets, and he’s always friendly with the children. He gives them little pencils and stuff during holidays, and they love it. He’s really nice to everybody.” And a Wayne crossing guard’s job is not limited to ensuring child safety. Yes, they are school crossing guards, but if you’re out walking your dog or out for a stroll by yourself or with a loved one, the crossing guard is waiting for a break in traffic to raise
his or her “STOP” sign and escort you across the street minus harm. “We cross anybody that comes to our crosswalk,” Jones says, and she ensures the proper person will be at that crosswalk. “I try to match up a guard to the right kind of post. In front of a school might be a little more challenging, but so can Hamburg Turnpike and Ratzer Road. I hire people and I personally train them. If I feel like they can’t be at a certain post, I’ll never put them there. I’ll put them where it matches their personality and what they can handle.” Wayne resident Hilary Caruso teaches at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, where her daughters attended. “The crossing guards are going above and beyond to make people’s lives safer, and to make kids bond with them so that they feel like they can trust people helping them do something, which is crossing the street, or just being there to talk on a bad day.” Caruso met Jones, who has been a supervisor for three years and was a crossing guard for two, at the school. Jones’s children attended JFK, and she was also a crossing guard there. “She did a great job at the crossing spots of JFK,” Caruso says of Jones, “which is a horrible intersection to begin with. It takes two crossing guards to cross the kid safely.
There’s a lot of traffic going on. She was always wonderful, always had a smile on her face, and always was willing to help.” “My guards are so valuable,” Jones says regarding the folks keeping everyone safe at the township’s 33 posts. “They’re so
underestimated, but they do a great job. They really do.” For those who are interested and would like to learn how to become a crossing guard for the Wayne community, Jones can be contacted at 908-502-2371.
Trilogy on Autism... continued from page 10 friendships, relax, and share ideas for assisting their children. Gelormini has already started some support groups for these parents. She feels such experiences can be very instrumental in helping these parents because it can often be a long, and isolating experience for them. The author knows first-hand how lonely the process can be and that such parents “never get a break.” She wants to provide some relief to these hard-working mothers and fathers while building a more positive community for children with autism. She credits her strong connection to her faith for being able to persevere after her son’s death and remain an advocate. She firmly believes God wanted her to “love him (Robbie) the
way he is.” She also has a larger dream of using the book sales to buy a farm and build several group homes on it. Here, children can ride horses, make friends, and participate in a lot of outdoor activities that Robbie enjoyed. “It drives me and pushes me forward,” said the author. Whether this dream turns into a reality is uncertain, but Gelormini’s message of love for others endears her to local schools. According to her, “I would love to see the books in every elementary school in New Jersey.” The Robbie’s World series can be found on Amazon.com.

The Moving Wall Coming to County College of Morris in July
T
By Steve Sears he Moving Wall”, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., for over 30 years has traveled our great nation, and this summer it makes a four day stop at County College of Morris. Bill Menzel, Vice-Commander of Randolph VFW Post 7333, speaks about the 280foot wall, which will be unveiled shortly after Independence Day, from July 8 thru the 10th, 2022. “It’s been around and it’s been rebuilt. It’s not the same wall that they started with.” “The Moving Wall” has in the past been on display in Essex and Sussex counties, but never in Morris County. “We expect somewhere between 20 and 30,000 visitors over three days,” Menzel says. The wall arrives and will be set up on the 7th, and will be available for public viewing from the 8th to the 10th. Menzel explains the proceedings. “The 8th is where we will have our opening. There will be some ceremonies and readings, and then the 9th will be the grand opening for the major speeches. And, of course, every day we’ll have a rifle salute to the National Anthem, and playing taps at night. It will be a 24-hour program, and then the 10th will be the closing ceremony. It’s just three days that the public can access it.” The wall will be taken down on the 11th. Menzel also mentions that there is a special outreach to all
“
the Gold Star families in Morris County and New Jersey. “We’ll be making a special effort to honor them.” Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd. of White Pine, Michigan manages “The Moving Wall.” “They create a schedule every year,” says Menzel of the group. “One of the reasons why we’re working with the county college is because they’re providing a lot of the financial support in the sense of helping with putting up the walkways and providing security and printing programs. It’s really a very strong sponsorship that they’re providing for this program.” Menzel also recognizes the support of Senator Anthony Bucco, Assemblyman Brian Bergen, Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, Randolph Township Mayor Marie Potter and the township council, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, and the participation of the American Legion, the Red Cross, the Vet Center - which is part of the Veterans Administration, Disabled Veterans of America, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. “All these veteran’s groups will be participating to some degree or another in this program. It’s a real strong community effort,” Menzel says. VFW Post 7333 was founded after World War II, and it serves Randolph, Dover, Mendham, Mine Hill and Chester. The mission statement is as follows: Our mission is to help represent the Veterans who have

fought in foreign wars in the communities we serve. Our goals are to support our Veterans when they need assistance, to maintain a relationship of respect and trust with our communities, to encourage patriotism and to honor our Fallen and current military. “We welcome veterans from any kind of foreign war action. If you were under fire someplace outside of the United States,” Menzel says, “we welcome you.” Any donations made on the VFW Post 7333 website (www.VFWPost7333.org) will be used to support “The Moving Wall” program, and there’s also an opportunity

to sign up to be a volunteer for the event. “We have over 30 volunteers that are going to be part of the process,” Menzel explains. “You need people to guide people to the wall and help them find a name. You need at least a staff of 10 people available at any given point in time. It’s going to be in shifts, three shifts a day. You also need people to put up the wall and take down the wall. The Warriors’ Watch Riders escort the trucks when they arrive and they help put up the wall.” Visit www.themovingwall.org for more information.

Wayne Church Is Putting God’s Love In Motion
P
by Elsie Walker utting God’s Love in Motion” is a phrase that the Packanack Community Church (PCC) lives by. Located at 120 Lake Drive East in Wayne, the church is marking its 75th anniversary this year. “Packanack Community Church is a hidden gem in Wayne. From the tranquil setting on the outside, you would never guess how much activity goes on daily. The members of this church work tirelessly to help our community and the surrounding area. I always learn something from the Sunday sermon and especially enjoy the Children’s Sermon. As a new member, I find it warm, welcoming, and open to all,” said Tracie Coletto of Wayne. As noted on its website, the church was started in 1947
as the doctoral project of Jacob Cunningham, a graduate student at Columbia University. The first congregational meeting was held in February 1947, and the first service was held at the Packanack Clubhouse that March. Over the next two years, the congregation grew with people of various denominations joining it. On its third anniversary, the church broke ground for its own building, the current church. The first service was held there on Easter day, 1951, and in 1972, the Packanack Community Church became affiliated with the United Church of Christ. A more recent milestone in the church’s history happened in 2016 when it received the designation of “Open and Affirming” by the United Church of Christ. The designation is given to a church which has made
a covenant to welcome persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. As for celebrating its 75th anniversary, there are no plans yet, but the church’s pastor, Juli Bertalan, who came to the church in 2020, says to “stay tuned”. Bertalan comes from a long line of ministers, though she is the first female in the family to go into the field. She recalls the desire to enter the field was in her, even as a child. People would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up.” “A minister,” she’d quickly reply. Bertalan says that what she finds most rewarding about being a minister is, “I get invited into all aspects of life…all the milestones [from birth continued on page 20

continued from page 18 to death].” She is married with three young children, and the family has a cat and dog. Bertalan loves music, art, and eating. Worship is at 10 am on Sundays. People can attend the service in person or watch it streamed live on youtube. Covid protocols are followed in worship and Faith Formation/Sunday School. The worship style at the church leans towards the traditional, though sometimes it is a blend of traditional and contemporary. Music is shared by the Agape Handbell Ensemble and a Chancel Choir (except during COVID surge) which are both open to anyone to join. Children are in worship until after the children’s message, when they go to Faith Formation-Sunday School for ages three and up. There, they hear Bible stories, do crafts, participate in activities, and learn they are loved. Periodically, during the year, there will be special events for the children. Also, there are seasonal Bible studies for the adults. COVID has made the church cut-back on in-person fellowship opportunities, but there is a men’s book group and a men’s breakfast club. There is also an unofficial women’s gathering for breakfast. A mission of the church is Packanack Cooperative Nursery School, located on the church grounds. It is a parent cooperative preschool for ages pre-school – Kindergarten. Its website (www.packanackco-op.com) shares, “Our cooperative structure supports the family as a whole, allowing parents to play an integral role in their child’s early education.” A link on the school website gives a virtual tour of the facility. “No Child Wet Behind” is the name of the church’s annu-
al diaper drive. The church’s Chair of Council and Chair of the Community Outreach Team, Lisa Seela of Wayne, shared that the drive, which starts several weeks before Mother’s Day, is open to the community. Last year, the diaper drive collected close to 20,000 diapers with the donations going to two organizations: Oasis in Paterson (a non-profit helping women and children break the cycle of poverty) and the Father English food pantry in Paterson. “We have not let hungry families down,” said Seela. Through community drives, the church helps support the effort of feeding the large numbers who come to the Father English food pantry. Besides food drives, one way the church has supplied food, and enjoyed fellowship at the same time (pre-pandemic), is through its baked ziti drives. Church members would get together to make trays of baked ziti which could be bought and donated to Father English or bought for people’s own enjoyment. The proceeds from the latter went into the monies the church uses for outreach. Last year, a baked ziti drive was held virtually. Besides helping Father English, the church also collects food for the Wayne Interfaith Network food pantry. In addition, the church has a large “blessing box “with non-perishable food on-site. It is a continuous cycle of people putting in food donations and those in need finding blessings in the box. Usually put outside, the box has been moved inside the doors of the church for the winter, but is still accessible. Finally, through its long time Angels Calling, the church adopts families in need and helps them while respecting their dignity and privacy. Another outreach is the coffeehouse speaker series. Given once or twice a year, these informational programs are open to the community. Guest presenters speak on a vari-
ety of topics. Past programs have included Addiction In Our Town: What Every Parent Should Know, Transgender 101, and Christianity & Racism: A Historical Reckoning. Reflecting on the church and what excites him about it, Neil Kelly of Wayne, shared, “At PPC, I have truly found a home where what I see in the Bible is manifested in reality: people welcoming people, genuine love for all humankind, and reaching out to the world to try and help.” For more information on the church, streaming a service or seeing past services, go to the church website at www. packanackchurch.org/ To contact the church, its email is office@packanackchurch.org and phone is 973-694-0608

Wooden decks rank in the top 10 for ROI, according to the report. An attractive deck situated off the living room or kitchen can make those rooms feel larger, especially when you’re entertaining, and guests can circulate freely between indoor and outdoor spaces. A well-constructed deck also serves as a transition point from the home to the backyard, where you may invest in even more outdoor living features. You’ll achieve the greatest ROI by designing your deck to integrate seamlessly with your home and landscaping and even stone accents. Also take functional features into consideration, including privacy and protection from the wind and sun. Depending on your climate, it may be beneficial to design a deck for maximum shade during the warm months or to make the most of sunlight during the cool seasons. Features like built-in kitchens, stone accents, TV mounts and access to water features all lend high-end custom touches that also boost ROI. Siding If you’re considering updating your

Consider future needs Because life is always evolving, it’s important to move into a home that has enough space for your family’s anticipated changes. While features and space are always prime considerations, don’t forget to, look into the area schools, day care options, parks and other kid-friendly amenities if you plan to grow your family in your next home. Look for flexible spaces Seek homes that offer rooms with multiple functions. The Housing Market is Crazy. Are Manufactured Homes the Solution?
I
Paid Content by Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. f you’re looking for a home, you already know that it’s rough out there. With a low supply of homes for sale across the country, prices have skyrocketed, pricing many prospective homebuyers out of the market. In many of the nation’s hotspots, multiple buyers are competing for each home. Prospective buyers are making all-cash offers, writing personal letters to convince homeowners to choose them, and paying significantly more than asking price. Home prices have been on the rise for the past few decades, according to research conducted by Fannie Mae¬Æ, while the inventory of available houses has been steadily decreasing. In fact, according to Fannie Mae¬Æ, the average price of a home has risen by almost 47% since 2012, and 76% since 2008. Wages, meanwhile, have gone up 17%. If you’re worried about being frozen out of the housing market, there’s some good news ‚àí there are alternatives to traditional housing. While structures like earth berms, tiny homes, shipping container houses and RVs tend to get more attention, manufactured homes are the unsung heroes of the housing
market right now. While the median home price across the United States in 2021 is $390,900, the average sales price of a manufactured home (not including land) is around $106,500, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. What is a manufactured home?Manufactured homes are built to standards set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), constructed with quality materials, and typically meet or exceed the specifications of site-built homes. There are multiple categories of manufactured housing including traditional manufactured homes, and CrossMod‚Ñ¢ homes. Site-built homes describe homes that are built on location, while off site-built homes are built somewhere else. Manufactured homes are built off-site inside home building facilities, and then completed on your land. Homes built off-site have a number of benefits, including: * Built more efficiently for reduced cost * Built more sustainably with less waste * Inspected by HUD at select points during the build process Perks of manufactured homesManufactured homes built today are

stylish and can feature an array of upgrades. Whether you want high-end cabinetry, a standing tub, hardwood flooring or drywall, these upgrades are typically available. A manufactured home can look just like a contemporary site-built home. Because of innovative building practices, these features can come at a more affordable price point. In many circumstances, manufactured homes can appreciate in value like traditional housing when affixed to land as real property, and manufactured homes can be more energy efficient than a typical site-built home. AffordabilityThe average price of a new manufactured home can vary. The average size is 1,184 sq. ft., which is smaller than most site-built homes sold this year. That’s not a bad thing. Most new sitebuilt housing built today is on average 2,322 sq. ft. and finding something smaller and more affordable is a challenge. For firsttime homebuyers or for those wanting to downsize, manufactured housing could be a better fit for your lifestyle. If you’re looking for a large home with a smaller price tag, multi-section manufactured homes are available for those looking for lots of square footage. The price can still be significantly less than a site-built home. Manufactured homes hold valueManufactured homes attached to a permanent foundation appreciate at an average rate of 3.4%, while traditional homes appreciate at an average rate of 3.8%. So, while manufactured homes may not appreciate at the exact same rate, they’re pretty close! That’s a common misconception most people are not aware of. But as with any home, you’ll need to maintain your manufactured home and property to retain long-term value. Energy efficiencyENERGY STAR¬Æ certified manufactured homes are built with energy efficiency in mind, which means lower energy bills and less of a negative impact on the environment. If you own land and are looking for an alternative to a brand new site-built home, a manufactured home may be a great fit for you. But what if you don’t have land? Financing tips for manufactured housingThe conundrum many potential homeowners face when considering manufactured housing is finding land. If you own land, no matter how big or small, the process can be a lot easier, especially with Vanderbilt Mortgage. That’s true whether the land is in your name, or if it will be gifted to you at closing. Depending on eligibility, you can even use your land in lieu of a cash down payment. Vanderbilt Mortgage’s Express Portal makes the loan process easy by keeping all
documents online. It tracks where you are in the process and keeps communication flowing smoothly between you and your loan processing team. When it comes to financing your manufactured home, here are just some of the loan options that are usually available in the marketplace: * Fannie Mae’s¬Æ MH Advantage¬Æ loan offers low down payment options for CrossMod homes, which are a new class of manufactured homes that can appraise like site-built housing and have conventional financing programs. * A simple land-home loan through Vanderbilt Mortgage allows you to bundle a manufactured home with land, while a construction-to-perm loan will work for you if you’re getting a new manufactured home from the factory. * You can even work with lenders who are approved to offer government programs like VA and FHA to purchase a manufactured home at lower interest rates. Buying a manufactured home without accompanying land can be a little more complicated. Typically, without a permanent foundation, a manufactured home is considered chattel, which just means it’s personal property, not real estate. Loans for chattel typically have a lower lending limit than a mortgage, and interest rates can be higher. If you don’t want to own land, you can always lease land to put your manufactured home on. Manufactured homes are a more sustainable alternative to traditional housing and a smart, fast solution to owning a home. With comparable features to traditional homes and a similar appreciation rate, it just might be the solution the current housing market needs. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners. All loans are subject to credit approval. Vanderbilt Mortgage, and its dba Silverton Mortgage, is authorized to originate FHA and VA loans, but it is not an agent of, or affiliated with, the U.S. Government. Celebrating St. Valentine’s Day with “Our Song”
F
By Henry M. Holden ebruary 14, Valentine’s Day, is a day dedicated to love. Love means caring for someone, putting their desires before your own, and having a real interest in their pleasure. The thing about romantic love is many of us find it hard to put it into words, and brain chemistry plays a role. High levels of dopamine and a related hormone, norepinephrine, are released during attraction. These chemicals make us giddy, energetic, and euphoric, even leading to decreased appetite and insomnia – which means you can be so “in love” that you can’t eat and can’t sleep, and your heart skips so many beats. Expressing love is perfect for anniversaries, weddings, engagement parties, Valentine’s Day, or for no special reason. One way is to “adopt” a song that the two of you heard together, perhaps on your first date and that will be your “Our Song.” Author Nicholas Sparks expressed it one way. “The best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more, that plants the fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. That’s what I hope to give you forever.” — The Notebook Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning defined love a different way. “I love you not only for what you are but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out.” “The First Time, Ever I Saw Your Face,” was written by Ewan MacColl and over the years performed by many artists. One of the best versions of this love song was performed by Roberta Flack. “The first time, ever I saw your face, I thought the sun rose in your eyes, and the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave - to the dark, and the endless sky…” These are both skillful lyrics and provoke powerful love emotions. Okay, you are not a song writer, but fortunately, these inspirational love lyrics will make finding new ways to say “I love you” a lot easier. Find a song that you feel says what you want to say, one that communicates your feelings and pass it on to that special person. There are few vocalists that can wrap

their song in velvet and whose voice will caress your heart. Etta James and “At Last” has one of those voices. At last, My love has come along. My lonely days are over. And life is like a song. At last the skies above are blue. My heart was wrapped up in clover. The night I looked at you. Perhaps you want to express how much you mean to the other person and how far you will take that love. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Waters,” is one way “When you’re weary, feeling small, When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all I’m on your side. Oh, when times get rough and friends just can’t be found, Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down…” The Righteous Brothers – “Unchained Melody” is a romantic composition of everlasting love. A type of love so strong; one that connects two souls, so deeply in tune, with the spirit of each other. “Woah, my love, my darling, I’ve hungered for your touch, A long, lonely time, And time goes by so slowly, And time can do so much, Are you still mine? I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me.” “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” - Aerosmith. The song is about treasuring every moment spent with another person. “I could stay awake just to hear you breathing, Watch you smile while you continued on page 25

Celebrating St. Valentine’s Day... continued from page 24 are sleeping, While you’re far away and dreaming, I could spend my life in this sweet surrender.” Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” - The person is part of your support system and without them you could not succeed. “Did you ever know that you’re my hero? And everything I would like to be, I can fly higher than an eagle, For you are the wind beneath my wings.” “You Raise Me Up” Josh Groban In 2004, Josh Groban’s version of “You Raise Me Up” was played more than 500,000 times on radio, topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts for 6 weeks. “You raise me up so I can stand on mountains, You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas, I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raise me up to more than I can be.” Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You” While remaining at the top of the charts for months after its introduction, it is now considered one of the finest love songs ever written (by Dolly Parton) even
though it is filled with bittersweet memories. I hope life treats you kind. And I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of. And I’m wishing you joy and happiness. But above all this, I wish you love’ “The Twelfth of Never “- Johnny Mathis The Twelfth of Never is an expression that defines the date of a future event that will never happen. In this song, the singer uses the phrase to explain that his love will last forever. A Timeless silky perfect voice, a true star, Mathis brought such joy to millions around this planet. “You ask how much I need you, must I explain? I need you, oh my darling, like roses need rain. You ask how long I’ll love you; I’ll tell you true: Until the twelfth of never, I’ll still be loving you.” Brain chemistry and love songs may get love started, but the real keys to lasting relationships are found in your heart and soul. Listen to the full lyrics of any of these songs, on YouTube.

Wayne Valley Girls’ Soccer Captures First Group 3 Title in School History
G
By Jerry Del Priore oing into the 2021-22 girls soccer campaign, Wayne Valley head coach Kathleen Sinram said she knew she had a formidable team. But it was the Indians’ 5-1 defeat to Ramapo at the end of September that was the defining game in its championship season. From there, Wayne Valley went on an unprecedented 17-0 run (22-3 for the season) straight to the NJSIAA, Section 1 Group 3 title after it beat Princeton, 2-1, in overtime at Kean University in late November. It was sophomore Izzy Rathjen who banged home the game-winning goal to set off a jubilant team celebration. “I knew we had the chance to be dangerous, but It was a tough loss to Ramapo,” said Sinram, who teaches Biology. “That game really showed what we could do, and that we could play better. After the month of September, we started to gel as a team.” But, “it (winning the championship) was awesome,” she continued. “The girls worked real hard, and they were fun to coach. After the Covid-shorted season, they didn’t take anything for granted.” The victory helped the Indians claim
their first state New Jersey title and the first by a public school girls soccer team in Passaic County. While Wayne Valley returned all of its starters, Sinram said it did not have much depth to lean on at first. But as the season progressed, the backups got better, and the team’s winning performance followed suit. “I used five or six players off the bench, rotating them in, and they did well as they gained more experience during the season,” said Sinram, who also coaches the boys’ junior varsity volleyball and the girls’ basketball squads.” In fact, junior Brianna Starling, the second string goalkeeper, pitched an 8-0 shutout versus Fort Lee in the first round of the state tournament. The Indians received strong goaltending all season long from Starling and senior starter Astrid McGraw, who made 106 saves in 24 contests. Sinram noted that type of solid goaltending boosted the defenses’ overall ability to keep Wayne Valley in several games. “Our defense played with confidence because they knew the two goalies behind them were good,” she said. As for playing at the next level, Sinram
said there will be five of eight senior student-athletes moving onto the college ranks in September. Forward Kelsey Ramos, the team’s leading scorer with 26 markers and 10 assists, will be heading to Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Emily Bozak, who had 24 goals and nine helpers, will play at D I Albany (NY). Next, there are three girls who will be playing at Division III colleges in the fall:
Erin Clark (4g, 18a) for William Paterson (NJ), Lexi Jessen (2g, 1a) for Ithaca (NY), and Juliana Vivino (1a) for Drew (NJ). For her outstanding efforts, NJ.com named Sinram as its 2021 Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. “It was a great honor to be recognized, but it was a team effort,” Sinram said. “I have a great coaching staff, and the kids are great.”
