Meet The (Very Talented) Pettets

O

By Steve Sears ne of my real purposes in life was to pass a legacy on,” says Denise Pettet. “And not only passing on good character and purpose in life and being able to bless other people, but also to use the gifts and talents God has gifted us with.” You experience that character, that purpose, and hear and see the usage of gifts and talent, when you meet Denise and her daughters, Ashley and Kristen, and her grandson, Todd, and see their performances. All are members of The Pettets, a northern New Jersey based performing arts family. Denise, from a very early age, was surrounded by music. “My dad was in the music industry,” she says. “I grew up in Alabama, and when I met my husband and moved here (to New Jersey), it was one of those things where I owned a nursery

school, so music was always around.” That influence has been passed down to Ashley, Kristen, and Todd, who is Ashley’s son. From the Wanaque area, all three ladies attended William Paterson University, and Todd currently attends school there. Sometimes the Pettets perform as a quartet, or Ashley and Kristen themselves as a duo. “It is awesome being

sisters,” Ashley says of she and Kristen. “We love it, and we’re a family first. That’s one of the values our mom instilled in us as well. Growing up together, singing in the car and at church, has been something that has continued to bring us closer. It’s like a cyclical effect, because one brings the other one around, so we’ve enjoyed doing music, and we’ve enjoyed having that sisterhood bond. We’re

best friends, and we’re very, very thankful for that.” When Ashley started in theater at age eight in the Annie National Tour, then followed that with Annie Warbucks on Broadway and The Sound of Music national tour with Marie Osmond, her younger sister was waiting in the wings for her turn. “I as a four-year-old knew no different in life,” Kristen says. “I didn’t know continued on page 4

continued from front page how fortunate I was. I got to tag along on the Broadway tours. So, for me, ever since I was born, she paved the way, and for my mother and sister and I, that was just the way life is.” When Kristen was five, she danced and sang in her first film, Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You, which starred Drew Barrymore and Goldie Hawn. The sisters eventually got together as a duo, and perform together to this day. “We thought, ‘What a wonderful way to share our music and share what we love,’” Kristen says. “We have a show where we sing, we have tap dancing…it’s an old-fashioned variety show.” One of their “stages” has been the White House. “We really enjoy doing that as a family, and I can tell you when we are not performing on stage, we are definitely singing together everywhere we are. We just love that so much, and God has given us a lot of opportunities to do that together.” For a period of time, it was just Ashley and Kristen as a duo, and then Todd would join them, and then Denise would occasionally make it a quartet. “It’s definitely teamwork, no matter what,” says Ashley, a graduate of the William Paterson University Jazz Studies program. “We have all these components: the sister act, the family, the individual performers. And when our mom started

singing with us, we were all very excited. It made everything complete.” Ashley’s son, Todd, who is 20, recalls when younger being around his mom’s variety show. “Just being around the whole show business atmosphere, and the older I got, the more involved I got in the show - little bit parts here and there - and then I would start to sing as well.” Todd also took up instrument playing, and his biggest embrace is for the bass guitar, and he plays with Ashley as a jazz duo and at national music festivals as part of a band. “But as far as our family goes, I love it, it’s so much fun, and it’s given me awesome life experiences that cannot come from just sitting in a classroom. It’s been really invaluable, the experiences, and the skills that I’ve learned.” “Everywhere that we perform,” Kristen says, “everybody says about the joy that we bring, and a lot of time they’ll be crying tears of joy – and you’ve brought that by your music. It just becomes a greater God-given purpose. And to be in all seasons of life, we have that bond, no matter what.” “This never gets old,” Ashley says of The Pettets. “Everyone’s unique. Its an incredible gift.” To learn more about The Pettets, visit www. thepettets.com, or their YouTube channel, www.youtube.com\thepettetsisters.

Assistant Coach Zachary Naszimento Brings Something Special to the DePaul Sidelines

D

By Steve Sears ePaul Catholic football Head Coach, Nick Campanile, and Offensive Line Coach, Zac Naszimento, had some extra help on the sidelines the past two seasons: Naszimento’s 18-year-old son, Zachary. Zachary, an Assistant Coach for the team and a senior at Secaucus High School, also has a great football mind. Just ask Campanile. “There was a time when I asked him what we should run for the first play of the game,” Campanile recalls. Zachary decided on a play, and explained why to Campanile. “I was like, ‘Man, that’s spot on. That’s a great idea.’ We ran it as the first play of the game, and he had reasons why and he backed it up with a lot of good ideas.” The result? A 13-yard gain and a first down for the Spartans. “I love it!” states Zachary enthusiastically. “I love making suggestions to them.” “Zachary is a special needs teenager,” explains his dad, who after this interview would attend with his son a DePaul coach’s meeting and talk about plans for the new year and next football season. “He (Zachary) has Sotos Syndrome,” Zac

says. “He is the happiest person I know, and makes everyone around him feel like they are his best friend when they meet him. He has some limitations, but for the most part he is very much independent.” Sotos Syndrome is a disorder characterized by overgrowth in childhood, and learning disabilities or delayed development of mental and movement abilities, but the younger Naszimento doesn’t let it stop him. In addition to his DePaul duties, Zachary was also voted Secaucus High School Homecoming King this past October, has a work internship as part of his senior program with the Secaucus Recreation Department, and works a few hours a day at the Secaucus Recreation Center. “He is hard working, committed, and resilient,” says Zac of his son. “Zachary is my best friend.” Coaching is in the Naszimento blood. Zac’s dad, Bruce, was a coach for many years. “My dad coached my brother in high school. He didn’t coach me, but my dad’s been doing it forever. So, it’s similar; I grew up the same way with my brother and my dad, and now Zachary’s with me. It’s priceless.”

of Zachary. “He understands football, he understands the terminology, and he really continued on page 7

He really is a good coach and he really helps develop our players.” Both Naszimentos are in their second year at DePaul, which finished with a 9 – 3 record this season. “I teach in Union City,” Zac says, “and what happened (in 2020) was, obviously with

everyone being home and doing virtual learning, it was a lot more accessible for me to just take Zachary with me every day to practice. He’s always been around with me, but last year was much more consistent. The staff and coach (former head coach and now Athletic Director, John) McKenna

and coach ‘Camp’ and the kids really embraced him coming around and being with me. That’s how that came about; it was kind of like a natural evolution, I guess, how it kind of worked out. Then, with the weight room and the summertime, he just basically came with me, and that sort of took on

a life of its own.” “Just being there every day,” says Zachary about what he enjoys most about being on the DePaul sidelines. “I like being with the kids, and the coaches are so committed. It’s like a family.” Zachary often second guesses his dad’s offensive line schemes on the sidelines during games or after games on the ride home, but Zac doesn’t mind. Sometimes his son’s suggestions prove fruitful. “I’ll have different input, some input about different things, and Zachary will say while we’re driving home, ‘You know, I don’t think that we should run that play’ or ‘I don’t like that so and so was on the field, that personnel grouping.’ It’s kind of funny, because sometimes it’s pretty accurate.” The leaves will change

Tax Day is Coming! 5 Big Questions People Are Asking

he individual tax deadline of April 15 is fast approaching. Do you have all your tax arrangements in order? Here are five important questions that people are asking. What happens if I don’t file on time? There’s no penalty for filing a late tax return after the deadline if you are set to receive a refund. However, penalties and interest are due if taxes are not filed on time or a tax extension is not requested AND you owe tax.To avoid this problem, file your taxes as soon as you can because the penalties can pile up pretty quickly. The failure-to-file penalty is 5 percent of the unpaid tax added for each month (or part of a month) that a tax return is late. Can I file for an extension? If you are not on track to complete your tax return by April 15, you can file an extension to give you until Oct. 15 to file your tax return. Be aware that it is only an extension of time to file - not an extension of time to pay taxes you owe. You still need

to pay all taxes by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. So even if you plan to file an extension, a preliminary review of your tax documents is necessary to determine whether or not you need to make a payment when the extension is filed. What are my tax payment options? You have many options to pay your income tax. You can mail a check, pay directly from a bank account with IRS direct pay, pay with a debit or credit card (for a fee), or apply online for an IRS payment plan.No matter how you pay your tax bill, finalize tax payment arrangements by the end of the day on April 15. When will I get my refund? According to the IRS, 90 percent of refunds for e-filed returns are processed in less than 21 days. Paper filed returns will take longer.24 hours after you receive your e-file confirmation (or 4 weeks after you mail a paper tax return), you can use the Where’s My Refund? feature on the IRS website to see the status of your refund.

Oops, I forgot a tax document. Now what? The first thing to do is determine the impact the new information has on your filed return. For example, if you claim the standard deduction and then receive a mortgage interest statement that does not bring your expenses above the deduction threshold, there’s nothing more you need to do. Simply file the statement with your other tax documents. If, on the other hand, you receive something like a Form 1099 with additional income, you will need to amend the tax return to claim the income. In cases like this, please call in order to review your situation and the timing of the correction. Robert P. Surprising Facts About Fleas and Ticks Female fleas are typically larger than the males and are responsible for proliferating the flea brood. Females can consume up to 15 times their body weight in blood every day. This helps to fuel egg-laying, which can take place within 36 to 48 hours of the female’s first meal. In her lifetime, a female flea can lay roughly 2,000 eggs. Fleas are wingless parasites that get around by jumping from host to host. If they don’t have to expend too much energy (i.e. get comfortable on a host), they can go anywhere from between two months and 100 days without a meal. Fleas can jump up to eight inches high, enabling them to grab onto a passing meal source. A typical flea can live for a few months, and fleas can carry a number of different diseases. From plague to cat scratch fever to tapeworms, fleas can make pets ill and also affect people who interact with them. Ticks Ticks are not insects; they are arachnids. continued on page 11

leas and ticks rely on blood for food. They are the vampires of the pet realm, silently stalking companion animals wherever they go. Once fleas and ticks find a victim, they are bound to stay around for a while, enjoying the free meal. Fleas, in particular, can grow quite fond of a cat or dog - reproducing and quickly building an infestation. Few people are enamored with fleas and ticks, but learning a little more about them can help pet owners understand their behaviors and how to best keep their pets safe. Fleas Fleas have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and biting adult. Most people are familiar with the adult stage because those are the most noticeable and painful. Fleas can feed on just about any blood host. Scientists know of more than 2,000 species and subspecies of fleas. However, in North America, the cat flea (ctenocephalides felis) is responsible for the majority of cat and dog infestations.

James Fallon Second Grader Collects Toys for Kids in Need

errie O’Connor Realtors’ Kinnelon office is so happy to have met our friend, Valentina Ferraro, a second grader at the James Fallon School in Wayne. Valentina voluntarily collects new toys from her neighbors and family members to donate to kids in need. Valentina’s thoughts were that she wanted to help children that might not be receiving any gifts. Valentina starts collecting toys the day after Christmas for the following year, by asking neighbors and friends to donate and keeps

a box at her home for drop offs. She said she “wishes she could see the kids opening their presents on Christmas morning.” She also said she doesn’t want anything for Christmas, just wants to give to kids that need toys. She gave each toy a little kiss before she puts any of the toys under the tree. This is the second year that Valentina was kind enough to drop her collection of toys at Terrie O’Connor Realtors’ Kinnelon office in support of the company’s drive for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

Fleas and Ticks... continued from page 10 That means they are more closely related to spiders and scorpions. The stages of the tick include the egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Depending on the species, nymph ticks can be quite small to the naked eye. Ticks’ small stature can make them difficult to detect until they have become engorged with blood. The University of Rhode Island’s Center for Vector-Borne Disease and its TickEncounter Resource Center say that spring is a prime time for the birth of new ticks. During this time of year, ticks are on

the hunt for their next meals. Ticks can be carriers of a number of diseases, but it’s important to note that a tick has to be attached for longer than 24 hours to transmit diseases to a host. That means checking animals (and yourself) for ticks frequently can help avoid the spread of illness. Ticks don’t jump or fall from trees. The parasites crawl upward, so start looking from the feet, moving up. In addition, check a dog’s face, where a tick may latch on while the dog is sniffing in the grass. Ticks and fleas are pesky critters that can carry disease.

Passaic County Technical-Vocational Schools Support Wreaths Across America Mission

O

n Tuesday, December 14th, in an aweinspiring display of patriotism, unity, and remembrance, the Wreaths Across America Special Convoy Escort remarkably rolled onto the campus of Passaic County Technical-Vocational Schools on their way from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery, in preparation for the annual wreath laying ceremony on December 18th. This was not only the first time the convoy visited PCTVS, but it was also the first time it has ever stopped in Northern New Jersey. Over the past three years, PCTVS has participated in the Wreaths Across America’s yearlong mission to “Remember, Honor, Teach” by becoming a local fundraising group for Veteran’s wreaths in partnership with Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa. On Saturday, December 18th, “National Wreaths Across America Day” over 1.7 million wreaths will be placed on veterans’ gravesites nationwide. Here in Passaic County, we have raised enough funds for over 1800 wreaths to be placed throughout Holy Sepulchre by PCTVS students. As the Special Convoy Escort arrived on campus, it was led by the award winning PCTVS Marching Band. With over fiftyfive vehicles in tow, this procession, which included tractor-trailers and numerous outof-state law enforcement vehicles, wound its way through campus in sight of hundreds of cheering and waving bystanders. The crowd that gathered was filled with veterans, activeduty military, and their families, as well as members of the local community, school administrators, faculty, and staff. Once the convoy had parked, guests were treated to an emotional and unforgettable assembly that was hosted in the school auditorium. The assembly program saw students of the PCTI School of Performing Arts perform two dance numbers. The first was an elegant and somber interpretative dance to Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You,” a touching memorial to those who lost their lives in battles throughout history. The second dance was a more upbeat performance to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,”

an homage to the World War II era of the 1940s. Both numbers received standing ovations from the over three hundred audience members in attendance, many of whom were veterans, active-duty members, and their families. Another extraordinary moment came when students memorialized multiple fallen heroes by reading their biographies on stage while pictures of the heroes were shown on a giant screen – it was a moving and emotional display of remembrance and patriotism. The finale of the program was yet another opportunity to pay tribute to our veteran’s when PCTI ROTC cadets performed the Passing of the Flag Ceremony while ROTC instructor Master Sergeant Paul Kozlowski, USMC, read the poem Old Glory. Many of the members of the audience stood and saluted throughout the reading and the ceremony received a standing ovation once completed – an appropriate conclusion to an extraordinary event. Earlier in the day, the Wreaths Across America Mobile Educational trailer was also on campus where students, staff, and community members had the opportunity to get a unique look into the history of WAA and what makes this project so special. The forty-eight-foot trailer is equipped with a twenty-four-person screening room that exhibits the different features of the WAA mission through a video showcase. Another part of the exhibit has three interactive computers to display locations, trucking supporters, and general wreath sponsorship questions. There also an educational wall of information on the multiple facets of WAA and where the convoy and project will be going in the future. PCTVS would once again like to extend our sincerest thanks to Wreaths Across America and their remarkable WAA Convoy for allowing us the honor of welcoming them onto our campus. We look forward to a continued partnership and hope to see them return next year for another incredible display of patriotism, unity, and remembrance.

Debunking Common Misconceptions About Gout

hen many people think of gout, they often picture swelling and pain in the big toe. However, gout – an extremely painful form of inflammatory arthritis – can occur in any joint when high levels of uric acid in the blood lead to the formation of urate crystals. If your body creates too much uric acid or cannot clear uric acid properly, you may experience sudden and sometimes severe gout attacks, called flare-ups, that include pain, swelling or redness in your joints. The condition can disrupt many aspects of daily living, including work and leisure or family activities. “I was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2009 and it wasn’t too long after that I started dealing with gout issues,” said registered nurse Theresa Caldron. “Gout affects your quality of life in a lot of different ways. You’re going through days of pain and no one knows it because you don’t look sick.” Because the kidneys filter and release uric acid, people with kidney disease are more likely to experience a buildup of urate crystals and, therefore, gout. In fact, 1 out of 10 people with chronic kidney disease have gout, and an even higher percentage of people with gout have kidney disease. To help debunk some myths around the condition, the American Kidney Fund,

in partnership with Horizon Therapeutics, created the “Goutful” education campaign, which aims to educate and empower patients with gout to help them live easier and prevent further health complications, especially relating to their kidneys. Consider these common myths: Myth: Gout is rare. Gout is a relatively common condition. More than 8 million Americans have gout, and it is the most common form of arthritis in men over 40. Myth: Gout is a man’s disease. Anyone can get gout, but it’s more common in men than women. Though men are 10 times more likely to develop gout, rates of gout even out after age 60 since gout tends to develop for women after menopause. Myth: Only people who are obese get gout. People of all sizes can develop gout. Though people who are obese are at higher risk, gout is more common in people who have other health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or kidney disease. Others more at-risk for gout are males 30-50 years old, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Black people, people with a family history of gout, people with organ transplants and people exposed to lead. Myth: Gout eventually goes away on its own.

Symptoms of gout attacks often go away within a few days, but that doesn’t mean gout is gone. Even if you don’t feel symptoms, urate crystals can build up beneath the surface, which can cause long-term health problems like joint and kidney damage. Myth: There are things you can eat to prevent or cure gout. Certain foods may help decrease the level of uric acid in your body, but diet alone is not a cure for gout. People with gout who

follow healthy diets may still need medicine to prevent flare-ups and lower uric acid levels. Alcohol and foods rich in purines, especially red meat and seafood, should be avoided if you are prone to gout. If you think you might have gout, talk with your doctor or a gout specialist about your symptoms. Visit kidneyfund.org/ gout to learn more about gout and kidney disease. (Family Features)

NJ residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls NEW JERSEY - Once New Jersey residents got wind that New Jersey State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 New Jersey State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of New Jersey residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped mint-

ing these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these New Jersey State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and New Jersey residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

■ GOT ‘EM: Residents all across New Jersey who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.

Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to New Jersey residents New Jersey residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per NJ resident has been imposed NEW JERSEY - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of New Jersey Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to New Jersey residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually seen one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of New Jersey Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of New Jersey residents claim the maximum limit

allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of New Jersey Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what New Jersey residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of New Jersey you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing New Jersey residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of New Jersey residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of New Jersey and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. ■

HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS FACTS:

If you are a New Jersey State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB3521

Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only New Jersey State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Why are so many New Jersey residents claiming them:

Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all New Jersey residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

New Jersey residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB3521 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each New Jersey State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

Hoboken’s Pizzeria Gaining Popularity

R

By Rocco Russo occo Russo grew up around food and in the food business. Between family catering, venues, restaurants and obviously pizzerias, he is a trained Executive Chef. Russo attended Culinary School (Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, New York) in the 1990’s. In the early 2000’s, the Russo’s moved to St Augustine, Florida, where they opened Russo’s Italian Restaurant. In 2013, they moved back to NJ, where for the next 10 years Russo entered the realm of Executive Chef for a variety of hotels, with The Marriott and The Hilton being a few. “Once the pandemic (COVID-19) came about, I was laid off from my Executive Chef position. At that time, my wife (Christine) and I decided we wanted to go back into business for ourselves. Even though it wasn’t the best time to open a restaurant, our broker found us this fantastic location, so we accepted the opportunity,” Russo says. Russo and his wife became creators and founders of Hoboken’s Pizzeria in Pompton Plains in August 2021. The Pizzeria is located near Routes 46, 80, 202 and 287, key transportation arteries in Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. Word is traveling about Russo and the Hoboken’s Pizzeria cuisine. “We put out a quality product. What we bring to the area is a unique spin on the pizzeria delivery service. If you look at our menu, there is a lot of restaurant quality food at a

reasonable price,” Russo says. He takes pride in all their old world Italian Recipes. “I’m especially fond of my Lasagna, which is made with bechamel sauce ($14.50). Another Favorite is the Rigatoni Bella ($20.50), which is a nice combination of shrimp and scallops. One our top selling pizzas is our Shrimp Scampi Pie ($22.50),” Rocco shares. The menu is populated also by a variety of appetizers, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, as well as different entrée and pizza options. Hoboken’s Pizzeria is mainly take out and delivery. There are a few small tables to enjoy food that is prepared with great care and experience. Hoboken’s Pizzeria celebrated an August 9th grand opening. “Business is definitely going in the right direction. My wife is my partner, and onsite is our nephew Vincent Russo, who works and runs the salad station, handles some frying and grilling. Our Superb and knowledgeable staff has thus far handled a pretty hefty radius of delivery and takeout orders. We receive orders from all parts of Wayne, Pequannock, Pompton Plains, Pompton Lakes, Butler, Wanaque, Haskell, Kinnelon and Lincoln Park,” Russo says. Hoboken’s Pizzeria is located at 615 Route 23 South, Pompton Plains. The full menu is available at www. hobokenspizzeria.com or call 973-907-2885 for more information.

Wayne Hills Alum Accomplishes Goal of Walking the Whole Appalachian Trail

W

By Steve Sears ayne Hills High School alum, Stephanie Bitcon, celebrated her birthday this year in a special way. She started walking the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail - which starts at Georgia’s Spring Mountain and ends at Maine’s Mount Katahdin - at age 24, and completed it at age 25. Bitcon explains. “I had a birthday on the trail,” she says. “It was at the end of August. We were in New Hampshire, and it lined up really well where we were going to hike Franconia Notch that day. It’s a really scenic part of the trail that a lot of hikers go to. It was just absolutely beautiful. We had such a clear day.” Bitcon walked the trail with her boyfriend, Nick Ryan (“It was such a huge partnership,” she says), beginning on March 28 and finishing on September 23. “Nick’s brother had done it,” Bitcon says, “and it was a really positive experience for him. I had never considered doing it. Once he did it, then Nick actually came up with the idea. He’s like, ‘Hey, would you want to do this?’ It was the first time I had considered doing it for myself, because you drive - especially in the North Jersey area – and there’s the

rolling, foresty hills, and then look at it and think, ‘I just wonder what it looks like in there?’” The initial part of the couple’s endeavor was facing the elements. “In the beginning, it’s very difficult,” Bitcon remembers. “I didn’t really get used to it for probably about a month. It’s March, it’s cold, it would get very cold, and then it would rain. It was very stressful when it would rain. We’d get soaked, and we weren’t used to how to keep our things dry - like our sleeping bags. And if the temperature gets below freezing in the evening, that can be dangerous. That was very stressful, and we finally got the hang of it.” A “walk” on the Appalachian Trail is also a “climb.” “Oh, my goodness, yeah,” Bitcon says. “It’s very hilly, especially in the beginning, which is a rude awakening when you’re just getting used to it. Not much of it is flat, it’s very challenging. There’s rock scrambling on different parts, where you’re literally climbing with your backpack on boulders. And there’s this famous section called Mahoosuc Notch, which is the hardest mile on the Appalachian Trail. It took us just under two hours to do that. There were times where I had to take off my backpack and crawl through stuff and then

try to shove my backpack through the hole and then pull it out the other side.” Indeed, there were the challenging portions of the trail for the duo, but then there were the favorite sections. “The

White Mountains were really beautiful in New Hampshire,” Bitcon recalls. “The Roan Highlands in Tennessee, and Franconia Notch, were absolutely amazing. And continued on page 22

I Remember Dad: The Ghost of the White-Tailed Pony

By Richard Mabey Jr. have been all so reluctant to write about this little chapter of my dad’s life. Well, not so much just of my dad’s life, but of a legend, a most haunting and eerie legacy of the Mabey family. As most of you know, my dad was born and raised in the home that his father built at the end of Mabey Lane. There was once a large, open meadow lying between the home at the end of Mabey Lane and the old Mabey Homestead facing Route 202. My grandfather crowned this beautiful open field as “Earl’s Meadow.” For it was the very land upon which Grandpa’s brother, Earl Mabey, was planning on building a home upon, when he came home from fighting in World War I. Sadly, Great Uncle Earl was killed in action in France. Growing up in Lincoln Park, my dad and his brothers had a most wonderful blessing in their childhood. They owned a pony! How the pony came to be the prideful property of my dad and his brothers had many legacies to it. My grandfather often told the story that his eldest son, Bud, had won the pony in a poker game. My cousins and I would sit at Grandpa’s feet, as he would tell this story, complete with animation and dramatic voice flexion. This story would always infuriate my grandmother because she was dead set against gambling.

Then there was a legendary story that Grandpa simply bought the pony from one his cousins who lived along the Mabey Lane in Towaco. Still another, more haunting and eerie family legacy, is that one day the pony simply walked out from the woods at the end of Mabey Lane and took a strong liking to my dad and his brothers. Everything in my heart and soul tells me that the story that Grandpa simply purchased the pony from one of his cousins, is the core truth. Here is where the story takes on a most eerie and haunting twist. My great grandmother, Dora Mabey, owned and managed a little ice cream parlor at the corner of Route 202 and Mabey Lane. In 1959, Dad added on a few rooms to the old ice cream parlor, and it became the home of his brother Dave and wife Sue, and their two children, young Dave, and Kathy. Sadly, the “Little House” as everyone called it, no longer stands. Great Grandma Dora would often fondly talk about the white-tailed pony. I remember as a young child, sitting on the front porch of the old Mabey Homestead, with my sister and my cousins. My great grandmother would tell us about the white-tailed pony. How she simply loved that little pony and how it would walk up Mabey Lane, on its own, two or three times a day to get the

gift of a carrot from her. Sadly, the pony passed away in 1944. My grandmother, Bertha Storms Mabey, often said that the pony simply died of a broken heart. That it missed my dad and his brother, Edward, so very much while they were away, serving their country during World War II. Grandpa simply accounted for the precious pony’s passing to old age. For nobody really knew how old the pony really was. At any rate, here is where the story gets to be a bit of a Twilight Zone tale. Great Grandma Dora often told the story that she would be sitting on the front porch of her ice cream parlor, and she would hear the distinct cadence of the pony walking up Mabey Lane, even after the beloved pony passed away. Even my dad hinted that after he came home from World War II, from time to time, he heard the clip clop of his endearing white-tailed pony walking up Mabey Lane. And, yes, even my grandfather told stories that he had also heard the clip clop sound of the ghost of the family pony, walking up Mabey Lane. From the time I was 10 years old till I was about 13, my pals and I would often sleep out in my backyard, along Mabey Lane, during the summer months. I don’t know if it was just my vivid imagination, but I did

continued from page 21 falling deeply into sleep. Some of my buddies also attested to hearing the sound of the ghostly pony’s hoofs, in the midst of the summer nights. Is it possible that a pony’s love for its family, brought its specter form back from the grave? Can the love between an animal and a person ever be limited? Does love ever die? Who among us can say for certain, that there is not an ethereal world that lies between earth and Heaven’s Gate? I really don’t know the answers. But I do know that my family truly loved the white-tailed pony. That it brought great joy to all of their lives. Hold dear and true the faith of a life beyond this physical world. Try to see life as a most unlimited thing that cannot be boxed in, in any way, shape, or form. Love knows no limitations. It is a force, an essence, a spirit that abounds in heart, mind, and soul. For love has infinite possibilities. Can science really understand the wonders, the power, the infinite possibilities of the loving heart? Is there a tie between people and animals that will never be truly, fully understood by the human mind? For truly, love is the greatest gift a person can give to another living being. ccording to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average

reached Maine’s Mount Katahdin and the terminus of their walk, it was emotional and uplifting. “For me personally, I just felt so empowered and accomplished. I felt like I could do anything,” Bitcon says, while also mentioning that she and her boyfriend headed afterwards to a nearby McDonald’s for a celebratory Big Mac. “On the trail, you get pretty hungry,” she says with a laugh. “It’s about the journey, and getting to Katahdin was absolutely amazing. To actually finish the whole thing was just great.” Next up for the couple is a goal to run the New York City Marathon, and also to walk the 486-mile Colorado Trail.

retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

A New Year’s Day Story

F

By Richard Mabey Jr. rom the days of my early childhood on through my senior year of high school, we would always spend a good portion of New Year’s Day at my maternal grandparents’ home in Boonton. The home was a two-story, yellow brick farmhouse that proudly stood on the 600 block of Boonton Avenue. A stone wall proudly stood on the edge of the entire front yard, just about a foot from the sidewalk. It was a most majestic stone wall with a level, concrete top. I so dearly remember the big feasts of New Year’s Day at my maternal grandparents’ home. My mom was the youngest of nine children. The house would abound with aunts and uncles and cousins. It was a joyous time, a time of innocence. It was a time when most people still had black and white television sets, there were no microwave ovens, no laptop computers, and no cell phones. Grandma, Mom, my sister Patti, my aunts, and my girl cousins would all somehow manage to fit into Grandma’s kitchen and would be busy cooking the big New Year’s Day feast. The men would be huddled around Grandpa’s little black and white television set, watching football games. I know how chauvinist this all sounds, but it was just the way it was back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The timing of the feast was always a bit of a puzzling thing to me. We would all eat at about 3:00 in the afternoon. So, the big feast was either a late lunch or an early supper, depending upon how you looked at it. Grandpa Kemmerer and I had a most wonderful and

magical bond. We were both drummers. I had started playing the drums when I was in fourth grade. I was in my school band from fourth grade on through all of my time at Boonton High School. Through the years, I had quite a few of drum teachers and band leaders. But, I learned the most about the art of being a fine percussionist from my Grandpa K. There comes a moment in time, in everyone’s life, when they look at the things, the places, then nooks and crannies that they have looked at a million and one times, but in one solitary moment see in an entirely different array of colors, meanings, and abounding depth. Such a moment came to me when I was 14 years old and in my freshman year at Boonton High School. Unbeknown to me, Grandpa K had gone to a football game at Boonton High, with a few of his fellow volunteer firemen. Grandpa saw me play the big bass drum during the half-time show. It was in the midst of New Year’s Day of 1968, that Grandpa K shared a sacred moment with me. It was New Year’s Day 1968. As Grandpa K sat in his easy chair, surrounded by his sons, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, he took a look at his watch. The football game on the old black and white television had mostly everyone hypnotized. “Well, here it is two o’clock in the afternoon. I better check on old Mickey,” Grandpa announced to everyone. Old Mickey was Grandpa’s beloved beagle, who had a most elaborate pen and doghouse in Grandpa’s backyard. I remember this moment all so well. Grandpa continued on page 24

A New Year’s Day Story... continued from page 23 unceremoniously arose from his comfortable chair, walked into the kitchen, and came out with a big aluminum bowl, filled with dry dog food. Grandpa looked down at the dry dog food as if it were tea leaves left at the bottom of a teacup, filled with fortune telling properties. “Richie, you wanna help me feed Old Mickey?” Grandpa called out to me. “Sure thing, Grandpa,” I responded. Grandpa and I put our coats on, walked out the side door of the old Kemmerer Homestead and began the walk down the gravel driveway to Old Mickey’s doghouse. I think that Old Mickey had the most elaborate setup that any dog could ever imagine. It was a large, gated area, with a big shed in one corner of the gated area. Grandpa had cut out a little doorway for Old Mickey to come in and out of the shed. A piece of canvas hung over the little opening, so that the cold air would not intrude upon the warmth inside Old Mickey’s walk-in doghouse. Old Mickey’s tail wildly wagged as he saw Grandpa and I walk down the driveway. Grandpa opened up the gate door, we walked into Old Mickey’s domain. Dear Old Mickey jumped wildly onto Grandpa, until Grandpa put down the metal bowl and Old Mickey begin eating his early supper. Grandpa petted Old Mickey, then began walking to Old Mickey’s shed. I followed my beloved grandfather. To my surprise, Grandpa grabbed a big, oversized bass drum mallet. He looked at the drum mallet with a certain sad reflection pouring from his eyes. The big, pot belly stove

in the middle of the shed, warmed us both. “Richie, I’ve had this old bass drum mallet more years than I can recall. I want you to have it,” Grandpa gently told me. I was lost for words. I could tell that the old bass mallet meant a lot to my dear grandfather. I thanked my grandfather for the endearing gift. I held the drum mallet in my hand, holding back my tears. For I knew, deep in my heart that my grandfather had just passed on something to me that he dearly cherished. As we walked out of the shed, Grandpa heartily petted Old Mickey. We walked out of Old Mickey’s big, gated area and began our walk up the long driveway to the side door of the endearing Kemmerer Homestead. Smoke ascended from the brick chimney atop the roof of the yellow brick home. “You’re a good drummer,” Grandpa said to me. Holding back my tears, I clenched the handle of Grandpa’s precious bass drum mallet with my right hand. “Thank you, Grandpa,” I simply replied. Over 50 years have come and gone since that wonderful, memorable New Year’s Day of 1968. Now at 68, I return in memory to that little, modest home atop Boonton Avenue. I would give everything I own to go back in time, for just one hour, to relive those precious and endearing memories. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. Get Ready for Your “Revenge Travel” with These Travel Tips

fter a year and a half of not traveling or taking smaller, local trips, everyone is itching for the vacations the pandemic put on hold. This feeling of being hungry for travel is what some are calling “revenge travel”: the idea that people are more eager to travel after being homebound for so long and want to go big - whether splurging or finally heading to a bucket list destination. To put your revenge travel plans in motion, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless¬Æ and Bold¬Æ Cards can help cardmembers earn now so they can turn their travel dreams into a reality. Whether that next big trip is around the corner or a year away, it’s never too early to kick off travel planning. Here are some top tips to help you organize the ultimate return to travel adventure. Earn more now, enjoy more later As you embark on planning, get started by working on a budget to narrow down options. One way to maximize spending, and even unlock destinations that felt out of reach, is to take advantage of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of cards. The cards offer earning on Marriott Bonvoy properties and everyday purchases so you’re able to rack up points now and redeem them for future travel. Marriott Bonvoy Boundless cardmembers earn 6x points for every $1 spent at over 7,000 hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, 2x points per $1 spent on all other purchases and a Free Night Award (valued up to 35,000 points) every year after account anniversary. Marriott Bonvoy Bold cardmembers earn 3x points per $1 spent at

participating properties, 2x points per $1 spent on travel purchases and 1x point per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases. Whatever your travel style, there are endless hotel possibilities to explore from the Ritz-Carlton to W Hotels to Westin, Sheraton and more in destinations spanning the globe. Set your travel intention After a year without travel, we might feel pressured to pack our first trip with as much adventure as possible. Just remember that vacations are best enjoyed when rest and resetting are part of the plan - and this can look different for all of us. Setting a trip intention can help your trip take shape, giving you an idea of which activities you and any travel companion(s) want to prioritize, but make sure to leave a little wiggle room to relax. Travel safe, travel smart Even if your next big trip isn’t for a while, it’s important to stay up to date on safety and travel requirements. For example, if you don’t have a passport or if it’s expiring soon, it’s recommended to start that process as soon as possible given recent delays in passport processing. It’s also helpful to look into what safety and cancellation accommodations your selected airlines have in place to help you travel with more peace of mind. For example, when you book a trip with a Marriott Bonvoy card, cardmembers have added protection benefits for lost luggage and trip delay, as well as a travel and emergency services hotline to help you get back on track. Most importantly, planning “revenge travel” gives us

something to look forward to. Many travel booking sites and services make it possible for you to book well in advance, with low or no fees for cancellations. Plus, if you follow the few tips we’ve outlined, it’s sure to be smooth sailing (or flying!) for your future travels. After a massively unpredictable year, it’s never felt more empowering to plan for the future. *Accounts subject to credit approval. Restrictions and limitations apply. How You Can Take a New Approach to Wellness This New Year’s

f you’re seeking ways to boost your well-being for the new year, consider taking a holistic approach. Don’t focus on one specific habit to conquer, but instead look at supporting the different systems within you - like your respiratory, immune, digestive and cardiovascular systems. A holistic approach focuses on those interconnected systems, not just aiming for a specific number on the scale. Registered dietitian nutritionist and certified yoga teacher Keri Gans, author of “The Small Change Diet” and an EpiCor¬Æ ambassador, offers tips to help you view wellness in a whole new way. “Find routines and practices that support your entire body,” advised Gans. “Think about how the exercises you choose, the habits you adopt or dietary choices you make support your well-being as a whole.” Here are three tips from Gans that can help revamp your wellness routine this year to focus on your whole self: 1. Move more and breathe When you’re stressed, you take shallower breaths, which can reduce your oxygen intake. Deep breathing helps you take in more oxygen, which travels throughout your body and gives you more energy. According to Healthline.com, deep breathing can help relieve stress while supporting a number of your body’s systems. * Take “breathing breaks” daily, closing your eyes and taking a few slow breaths. * Practice guided meditation or mindfulness techniques using breathing. Try a meditation app to help you learn easy techniques. * Move more, daily. Steady walking or cycling promotes deeper breathing, as does more rigorous exercise. Aim for at

least a half hour of moderate physical activity most days to get your heart pumping and oxygen circulating throughout your body. Regular physical activity also helps to reduce stress. Consult your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program. “Daily deep breathing and moving more helps you feel better, and has other positive benefits for your whole body, like potentially lowering your blood pressure,” said Gans. 2. Support your gut health Gut health is vital for keeping your digestive system working as it should - and also supporting your immune system. “The majority of immune cells originate from the gut, so your gut health influences your entire immune system,” explained Gans. Some foods can make a big difference when it comes to having a healthy gut microbiome, specifically fermented foods. “Fermented foods offer cultures - which are beneficial to live bacteria or microorganisms - plus metabolites and compounds that are produced by those cultures during the fermentation process,” explained Gans. “These metabolites are part of the foundation for a healthy gut microbiome.” These fermented foods help support your gut health: Sourdough bread, Yogurt, Kombucha, Kefir, and Sauerkraut. “If you can’t include many of these foods in your diet, or you don’t like their taste, you can benefit your gut health by taking a supplement containing postbiotics, which have beneficial metabolites and compounds shown through research to support your health,” says Gans. For example,

look for supplements containing the #1 postbiotic brand, EpiCor¬Æ, which is a first-of-its-kind whole food ingredient that taps the natural power of fermentation to help positively modulate the gut microbiome. “You can think of EpiCor Postbiotic as a multivitamin for your immune system, which helps take care of your health every day,” said Gans. “Clinical studies have shown that it can help support your immune system for coping with everyday challenges.” EpiCor postbiotic is found in a number of vitamin and supplement products, such as Healthy Origins EpiCor. For other products using EpiCor postbiotics, visit EpiCorImmune. com. 3. Improve the quality of your sleep According to WebMD, deep, restorative sleep is crucial for resetting all of your body’s vital systems, from your brain to your immune system and more. To get more restorative sleep: * Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet * Stick to the same sleep schedule every day * Wind down by turning off devices an hour before bed “Just one positive change in your routine can have a domino effect,” said Gans. “Each action you take to support your wellness builds on the next. You may start noticing improvements in how you feel sooner than you think, which inspires you to do more.” Taking positive actions toward better health doesn’t need to be just a New Year’s activity. Taking time to care for your whole self throughout the year will pay dividends, all year long. (BPT)
