That’s not something that ever interested me.” While working for the city of Newark, Aquil got promoted almost every three years. However, he never wanted to be in one place for too long, and he also realized that his time working in Newark had reached an end. “I loved Newark; I was born and raised there. I wanted to have an opportunity to do it (be a BA) there, but I had reached a ceiling and it didn’t happen there.”

Aquil assumes the seat from Neal Bellet, who for 29 years worked for the township and retired on July 29.

“It feels great,” says Aquil, regarding the working atmosphere and guidance he has received. “I think it’s a great situation to walk into.

He’s been a mentor. There was a month overlap; I started June 29 and he was with me for about a month.

Any questions that I had, he was there to answer them for me. That’s the best way to thrust you into it. ‘You’re the boss,’ he said. ‘I’m going to let you do everything. If

you have any questions, I want you to know that I’m here to help you.’ And he did. I still talk to him about five or six times a week.

He’s been both a resource and mentor.”

Wayne Man Laid Off by COVID-19 Makes His Mission to Mow Lawns for Free

By Jillian Risberg he pandemic cost Brian Schwartz his job. But the Wayne man has decided to pay it forward by mowing your lawn for free, focusing on the elderly and underprivileged in North Jersey.

Schwartz was working for an insurance marketing agency on the demand side from business development to media buying and ever since Coronavirus hit, he says people started to think about their finances, particularly life insurance.

“There was still business to be had, just less of it — causing the cost to acquire customers across competitors to go up,” says the Vice President of Demand Generation (VPDG).

“And it wasn’t a good time to be in this industry. I was laid off in June.”

That prompted Schwartz to reinvent himself.

“On a whim I decided to do something good for others instead of moping around,” he says. “I’m late 30s, healthy and see what’s going on, feel bad and don’t have any of my grandparents anymore — so I can only imagine the stress others are going through.”

That meant coming up with an activity that didn’t require the VPDG going into homes and could help them save some money.

“There’s no obligation; it’s free and it feels good doing it,” says Schwartz, who is definitely playing it safe. “I’m all about social distancing and wearing masks; I’ve got gloves.

I’m being totally cautious and respectful.”

Though Schwartz is not planning on taking up lawn mowing as a new profession, he’s been thinking about where his venture is headed.

“Some people are saying I should look for like-minded volunteers to help out and establish some form of referral partnerships,” he says. “There’s this lady that first inquired about the lawn mowing then she also asked about gardening, which I wasn’t really offering.”

According to Schwartz, he’s not going to say no but is looking to build a network of volunteers and partners.

“It’s another creative way to get the word out and find some business for others locally,” he says.

“If I could expand to other regions, it would be really cool — mowing lawns for free and doing up-sell partnerships with other home services partners; like landscaping, roofing, pest control, anyone that services homes that wants to become a network partner,” Schwartz says.

So far a Montville woman reached out, as well as women from Wanaque and Wayne regarding his mowing service.

“All of which didn’t need their lawn mowed yet,” the VPDG says. “They’re warm leads at the moment.

But he’s ready and willing to break out his Jeep, lawnmower and weed whacker as soon as they (and anyone else) need freshly cut grass.

And he will keep mowing if that’s where he needs to be right now.

“I’m playing it by ear, I’m not gonna turn people away,” continued on page 3

Schwartz says. “I have this newborn on the way at the end of the month so obviously that’s gonna take some of my time up. I might not be able to come that day but give it a few days and I’ll come by.”

As we continue to deal with the ever-changing new normal, he wants to remind everyone there’s still some good in the world and we’re all in this together in some capacity.

“Just putting it out into the universe, I believe it all comes back in some way, shape or form,” says the VPDG. “I’m doing

some soul searching, absorbing all the options professionally, trying to learn some new skills (and) keep my mind sharp.”

How far will he travel to mow your lawn? “(There’s) a form page on the site that lists the cities I would be able and willing to go to,” Schwartz says. “I’d prefer to be within a 10-mile radius (in Passaic County) but if it’s 15/20 miles I’m happy to make the trek.”

Laurelwood Arboretum Awarded ArbNet Accreditation

ayne’s Laurelwood Arboretum has been awarded Level II Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. Level II criteria include having a minimum of 100 species, varieties or cultivars of trees or woody plants; having a defined collections policy; and supporting enhanced educational and public programs relating to trees. Laurelwood is also now recognized as an accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of the world’s arboreta and gardens dedicated to woody plants.

“ArbNet Accreditation has been a goal of ours for quite some time,” said Linda E. Ransom, President of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum. “Our Plant Collection Management Committee, led by Betty Montagne, worked diligently for the past several years identifying, cataloging and tagging our special collections of trees, rhododendrons and native plants and built our collections database with 1,600 separate listings to date.

And our Community Outreach Chair Bonnie Joachim spearheaded public programs and tours that offered educational opportuni-

ties in horticulture to our community. As a volunteer organization, we are proud of this accomplishment.”

Laurelwood Arboretum is a 30-acre botanically diverse property that features woodland trails and gardens, wildlife, two ponds, streams and hundreds of varieties of rhododendrons, azaleas and other unusual species of plants and trees. Once a commercial nursery, Laurelwood is now maintained as a public park through a partnership between the Township of Wayne and the non-profit organization Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, Inc. The Friends organization provides a variety of opportunities for horticultural appreciation and education through public programs, tours and outreach activities.

ArbNet is an interactive, collaborative, international community of arboreta. Intellectuals are supposed to speak truth to power. Unfortunately, some seem to be more interested in saying what everyone expects them to say, which only reinforces the status quo.

Thankfully, a few scholars are resisting this trend, fighting for what is true rather than what is popular.

Case in point: a recent Hoover Institution paper on “A Pro-Growth Fiscal Consolidation Plan for the United States” by economists John Cogan, Daniel Heil and John Taylor, which makes the case for a reduction in spending now in order to positively impact the economy.

It’s refreshing to see their research, considering that we live in a world where pundits and even economists bend over backward to make the case that more debt is not a problem and that more fiscal stimulus is desirable. Never mind that the arguments that intellectuals offer to defend these claims aren’t supported by the academic literature. Consider the mistaken notion that more spending will stimulate the economy and somehow reduce the debt burden of the policy in the first place. Research overwhelmingly confirms that, for a variety of reasons, the return of government spending on economic growth is much less than the money spent.

Then there’s the argument that interest rates are low and hence, it’s a good time to take on more debt -- despite the chance that variable interest won’t always be that low. But more debt, even at low rates, still means more interest payments. Before COVID-19, the United States paid close to $400 billion in interest payments annually, or 8% of our budget. It’s only going to get worse now. Japan, for instance, has a massive amount of debt, despite its 0% long-term interest rates. Its debt repayments are its second-largest budget item.

I wish reporters and economists would stop asserting, like The Wall Street Journal recently did, “The example of

Mark Shields Japan has shown that debts can rise for a long time, well above 200% of GDP, without sparking a fiscal crisis.” Really? I would have thought that Japan’s two decades of no growth and wage stagnation could be considered a crisis.

Moreover, Japan is quite different than the United States and can get away with more overall debt than we could.

That’s because most Japanese securities are held in the Social Security trust fund that’s owned by the government. This means that net public sector debt is actually significantly lower in Japan than in the United States.

Enter the new paper by Cogan, Heil and Taylor, which finds that, when faced with an inevitable debt explosion in our future, the only viable and desirable option is for Uncle Sam to limit expenditures as a share of GDP, around the 20% ratio that prevailed before the pandemic. The authors find that this approach avoids the “potentially large increase in future federal taxes.” Better yet, they actually find that the policy would boost both short- and long-term GDP. This research will be added to decades of empirical evidence that spending-based consolidations are expansionary in the long term and, sometimes, can boost growth in the short term, too.

When Reporters Babble ‘Without Evidence’

ne of the common tropes we see in everyday news coverage is the claim that something said by President Donald Trump or his supporters is “without evidence.” This is a stark factual claim. Sometimes, it’s starkly wrong.

The hashtag #DefundNPR started trending on Sept. 1 after NPR tweeted this to 8.3 million followers: “President Trump declined to condemn the actions of the suspected 17-year-old shooter of 3 protesters against police brutality in Kenosha -- claiming, without evidence, that it appeared the gunman was acting in self-defense.”

Video evidence clearly shows a man holding a handgun approach the 17-year-old, Kyle Rittenhouse, while he is on his back, and Rittenhouse shoot him in the arm. You don’t have to justify everything Rittenhouse did to know there’s obvious evidence of acting in self-defense.

The actual article NPR linked in the tweet made no such boast of Trump acting “without evidence.” Reporter Alana Wise cautiously claimed: “Graphic video from the chaotic scene only tells a partial story. The shooter’s alleged actions have split onlookers on party lines.” But she failed to explain what the video showed.

The words “without evidence” are routinely applied to Trump’s statements about mail-in voting. On the “Today” show on Aug. 16, NBC’s Hallie Jackson said, “On Saturday, the president, without evidence, claimed mail-in voting to be, quote, ‘catastrophic.’” On the same show two days later, NBC’s Peter Alexander lectured saying, “The president, without evidence, keeps escalating his attacks on universal mail-in voting and defending recent policy changes at the Postal Service that critics warn could delay the delivery of ballots.”

But NBC is blatantly avoiding evidence from its own base in New York City. The city took six weeks to count a record 400,000 absentee ballots cast in the June 23 primary and didn’t certify

When Maloney’s opponent, Suraj Patel, conceded last week, he complained that 11,000 ballots in the district remained uncounted. Thousands of voters also reported receiving their ballots late or never getting one.

If you’re a Patel backer, that would feel “catastrophic.” It would certainly feel “catastrophic” to Trump-hating reporters if Trump were to win a state with mail-in ballots by a narrow margin.

They would complain if it took weeks to count the ballots and if some ballots were never counted. No one believes they wouldn’t eagerly promote challenges to the integrity of the election.

Meanwhile, it’s sadly routine for liberal media outlets to make outlandish claims about Trump. The Washington Post editorial board recently published a hyperpartisan editorial claiming Trump “has done as much as any global actor to advance the cause of authoritarianism and undermine the free world. Mr. Trump’s most conspicuous aid to tyranny has been his relentless support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Here’s why: The traditional objection against spending cuts is that they hurt demand (consumption), but this study shows that a reduction in spending actually increases consumption in the short run and into the long run.

That’s because, in the same way people tend to increase their savings during a recession due to fear of the future, consumers also consider the long-term tax implications of

today’s spending measures. They’ll increase their spending and investment habits in anticipation of future tax cuts -or, at the very least, no future tax hikes. The result is that the growth in output resulting from the spending restraint is driven primarily by consumption, which should be politically salient. The authors, however, also highlight that, as expected, investment reacts positively in the long run.

At a time when flawed arguments for more government spending and more debt are reemerging, this paper goes against the big government status quo and offers a blue-

print for us to not only regain control of our spiraling debt but also do so in a way that will boost short- and long-term economic growth by boosting demand and then investment.

Aquil when growing up suffered with a form of dyslexia.

“I was 11-years-old before I really learned how to read,” he says. “It was struggle back then. I was the butt end of

jokes. I went to three different high schools.” While at St. Benedict’s Prep, the school’s child study team tested him and discovered the dyslexia. He attended the school for five years and got tutored, raised his GPA, and the University of Florida A&M, the only school who eventually accepted him as a student, encouraged him significantly. “Giving up was not an option,” he says.

Aquil, who with his wife, Jamilia, are parents of two daughters, Zahra (14) and Ziya (7), has given his word to Vergano that he’s going to be Business Administrator of Wayne for at least five years, and he hopes beyond. “I know he’s going to run again (for Mayor),” says Aquil, “and I’m confident he’s going to be the Mayor-elect. He’s pretty popular and done a lot of good things.”

Wayne Artist has Flag Flown at Rockefeller Center

W

By Steve Sears ayne resident and artist, Richie Esquiche, recently attained a pretty special honor.

In the Rockefeller Center skating rink area, he and other artists from around the world had the opportunity from Aug. 1 to Aug. 23 to have their latest works, decorative flags honoring New York City unity, flown as part of “Flag Project: Celebrating New York.”

“It’s an 8’ x 5’ flag,” Esquiche says. “I was driving to work, and I heard on 1010 WINS about a flag contest and call for artists, and something about a tribute to New York.”

That night at work, Esquiche sketched on a napkin. He wanted to incorporate the cityscape first, and wanted to make it simple, so it could be seen from far away. “Simple but functional,” he says. “Form and function working together.”

When he was a student at Rutgers University, Esquiche often traveled into Manhattan and fell in love with it. His flag design shows it. On the Rockefeller Center Flag Project website, he describes his flag, which is based on the iconic 1932 photo, ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’: “Peruvian-born, Jersey-raised artist. My flag design is a tribute to the dawn of the industrial era; fueled by the labor of many, resulting in the metropolis that is the NYC we love.”

On the flag, eleven silhouetted workers sit perilously along an extended steel beam, the New York City skyline in the background, the sky both yellow and orange, mimicking colors of the sun, dawn or dusk. “I like the silhouette; it makes them anonymous, but still iconic,” Esquiche says. Coincidentally, the men in the photo were at that time working

on Rockefeller Plaza. “Back then,” Esquiche adds, “the millionaires funded it, the architects designed it, but the laborers were the ones that got it done.”

Esquiche, a former Prospect Park Councilman and Town Council President who designed his flag entry on Photoshop, discovered his passion for art early in life, while in kindergarten. “I still remember,” he says with a laugh. “They gave everybody a sheet of paper and watercolors. They gave everybody a brush, and in the center, they had different palettes of different colors, and you pretty much could create anything.

I just decided to do a simple smiley face, just very simple, and she (the teacher) liked it. She was like, ‘Wow! Very good work, Richie!’ And I was like, ‘Wow! A grown-up said that.’”

Esquiche while in Prospect Park did posters for festivals and events in town. His work of Peruvian Andean Art has been displayed at the Paterson Art Museum, and his photography work has appeared at The Art Factory in Paterson.

He especially enjoys doing portraits, and one is a favorite.

A friend asked him to do a portrait for her dying dad, who was almost 90. The portrait was of when he married his wife when they were young. “Later on, she told me when he saw it, he cried,” Esquiche says, humbly. The portrait is now displayed in the dining room of the family’s home.

Esquiche’s goal now is to get into filmmaking. “I do photography, I paint, I wood carve, but filmmaking is something I want to do, too. I want something that changes people’s consciences for the better.”

“America’s Top Dog” Awarded to Morris County Sheriff Officer and His Loyal Partner

By Steve Sears orris County Sheriff’s Office Detective Corporal Michael McMahon and his K-9 partner Kai were recently named the proud winners of $25,000 as A&E Network’s “America’s Top Dog.” The win for Kai, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, and McMahon, a dog trainer who has been with the Sherriff’s office since 2011, aired on Wednesday, March 18.

McMahon, a Roxbury resident, learned of “America’s Top Dog” in the spring of 2019, when he happened to be at a civilian sport competition with Kai. He was approached by another competitor and asked if he had heard of the new show, was informed that there was a casting call, and encouraged to enter. “I went home,” recalls McMahon, “and my wife and I kind of laughed about it and said that it would be a neat experience if Kai and I were on there (the show). My wife put in a submission for me for the show, and then within a couple of days I got called for interviews, and then within a day or two I got the call that they wanted to cast me for the show.”

A week later, after approval and official paperwork were submitted, McMahon, his wife and two children, along with Kai flew to Santa Clarita, California for the competition. The series, which initially featured 50 K-9 teams, first aired on January 8, 2020. McMahon and Kai first appeared on an episode on February 26. The courses included jumping and climbing over obstacles, tracking down objects via their scent, finding and apprehending a suspect, and swimming across a 46-foot length pool of water. As far as preparation for the show, Kai and McMahon didn’t have or need much.

Everything seen on “America’s Top Dog” was practiced by the duo while Kai was being trained for his police duties. “Just the physical fitness portion of it – we actually run together all the time daily, go out and exercise together, make sure we both have endurance,” affirms McMahon. With regard to the latter event, he mentions that some participants had trouble with it. He and his partner didn’t, and with good reason. “Kai and I go swimming all the time. I take him out in the boat, have him follow me while I’m out in the canoe, all that kind of stuff. So, he’s been more than prepared for all that.”

“There were definitely some very good teams out there against whom we were competing,” attests McMahon.

“There were different canines from different programs across the country. On both the episodes I was on, I got to meet a good variety of people. There were definitely some good teams, especially in the final.”

The finale featured three rounds and seven opponents, and in round three, McMahon and Kai outpaced Alpharetta, Georgia Police Sergeant Mark Tappan and his partner, K-9 Mattis, by nearly 9 seconds in “The Doghouse,” which consisted of passing through a tangled spider web, crossing a narrow plank, running through duct work, and then down a set of stairs. Kai then completed the course by “apprehending a suspect,” and released the suspect to McMahon when commanded.

The duo completed the last set in under two minutes, securing the title.

Winning the competition goes beyond victory. It’s also a true visual of friendship and reliance. For McMahon – and

yes, Kai – it’s all about relationship and respect. “I got Kai when he was eight weeks old,” says McMahon, explaining the duo’s background. “He was bred out of my male who continued on page 14

Wayne Scouts Completes Eagle Scout Project at Laurelwood Arboretum

irds, bats and other beneficial pollinators have special homes at Laurelwood Arboretum, thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Aadhithyaram Balaji. Adi, a member of Troop #108 in Wayne, constructed and installed 12 nesting boxes in carefully selected locations throughout the arboretum. It is part of his personal effort to welcome and conserve New Jersey’s native wildlife.

Adi is an incoming freshman at Wayne Hills High School.

In middle school, he was actively involved in scouting, school musicals, band, and art and received the Presidential Academic Achievement Award. When not on camping trips, he likes to listen to Frank Sinatra and play the piano.

What to Know About Sharing a Bed with Pets

ets provide companionship for thousands of people around the world, so it is understandable that pet owners want to be around their companion animals as much as possible - with many even welcoming them into their beds.

According to PetMd, an online animal healthcare resource, around 80 percent of pet owners allow pets to share beds with human family members. Data from the American Pet Products Association has found at least half of all pet parents allow pets to sleep with them every night.

Whether this is safe, healthy, or wise is a matter of debate.

There are pros and cons to sharing a bed with pets. Understanding those pros and cons can help pet owners make more informed decisions.

Pro: Get into a relaxed state. Companion animals can help relieve stress, which may translate into better sleep for their owners.

Some people find that the rhythmic breath-

ing of dogs or cats can help lull them to sleep.

Con: Possible transmission of illness or zoonotic agents. Snuggling so close to a pet may put people at risk of acquiring illnesses that are transmitted from animal to human.

In the past, MRSA skin infections and H1N1 influenza have been transferred from pets to people.

Pro: Pets are warm. If the goal is to get cozy under the covers, animals can provide a little extra warmth, as their body tempera-

tures run a few degrees warmer than their owners’.

Con: An extra body in bed can disturb sleep. Just as individuals may have trouble with a spouse or a child being in the bed next to them, pets can bring about the same disturbances. In a study from the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, 53% of pet owners surveyed said their pets disturbed their sleep in some way each night.

Dogs that snore and cats that chase “prey” around the room can disturb their owners’ sleep.

Pro: A deeper connection forms between pet and owner. Many pets like to be around their owners because it gives them reassurance and comfort that they are loved. Animals that were rescued or are anxiety prone may be especially comforted by snuggling in bed with their owners. Hapy pets often make for happy owners.

A Guide to Female Health When Returning to Campus

ow that class is in session, early fall is a great time to focus on gynecological care. A gynecologist is a doctor that specializes in women’s health and reproductive capabilities. Below is a list of the services that gynecologists can provide to college age women returning to school.

Birth control: College is often the time that women begin to take birth control for the first time. Health classes and information that is obtained through commercials and media about birth control fail to present the wide range of birth control options. Birth control pill usage is the most common type of birth control method that women use besides condoms. Most birth control pills are a combination of both estrogen and progesterone and must be taken daily to prevent pregnancy. For those women to whom oral contra-

ception is contraindicated other longer acting methods such as progesterone injections, intrauterine devices and subdermal implants (Nexplanon) can be used instead. These longer acting methods have greater patient compliance as well as increased protection against pregnancy. Depending on your medical history, your gynecologist can prescribe a birth control method that best addresses your medical needs.

Menstrual cycle management: Women in their teenage years are known to have significantly more painful and longer lasting menstrual periods then they have at any other point in their life. By taking a detailed patient history and discussing the severity of symptoms a physician can often help a patient achieve a more manageable and less uncomfortable menstrual cycle. Many patients are surprised to learn

At the very least, it is advisable to wait until dogs are trained and exhibiting good behavior for extended periods of time before allowing them to sleep in their owners’ beds.

Pro: It’s a sign of trust. According to Victoria Stilwell, an internationally renowned dog trainer, dogs only sleep with the people or dogs they trust. Therefore, dogs who like sleeping with their owners are exhibiting trust and recog-

nizing the same from their owners.

Whether or not to allow dogs or cats to share personal spaces like beds, is a decision pet owners have to make. It should be based on safety, comfort, and mutual agreement with any other bed partners.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening: According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists “By grade 12, more then one half of females report having had sexual intercourse”. Unfortunately, many cases of STI’s are asymptomatic and this makes routine yearly screening absolutely essential for adequate health and maintenance. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can present long term health risks if they are allowed to go untreated for large periods of time. In addition, a gynecologist can discuss with the patient safer sex practices and ways to decrease the spread of STI’s in general.

Vaccinations: The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective vaccinations that is currently offered in the US. Human Papillomavirus is a virus most commonly associated with cervical cancer and with genital warts. The vaccine is offered to men and women from 9 years- 27 years old or younger to prevent the spread of HPV in the vaccinated individual and decrease both rates of cervical cancer and genital warts. The HPV vaccination is recommended to all women regardless of their sexual orientation. The time before a woman goes to college can be an excellent time for an HPV vaccination series. Most gynecologist offices have the HPV vaccines supplied in their office and would be happy to assist you with this.

America’s Top Dog... continued from page 8 was my retired patrol dog and competition dog, named Ronan. Ronan was my first patrol dog, my first dual-purpose dog at Morris County, and he was unique because he was my competition dog before I got employed by the Morris County Sherriff ’s office.”

Prior to his joining the Sherriff ’s office, McMahon and his wife Michelle ran their own business, training and selling dogs, many to police departments. “We sold dogs across the country, to many agencies who needed trained Malinois and German Shepherds,” explains McMahon. While running his own business, he had sold a number of dogs to northern New Jersey agencies, one being the Morris County Sherriff ’s Office.

Therefore, he was familiar to and had a rapport with them. He was then hired for the canine unit as an investigator. Afterwards, McMahon volunteered to donate Ronan and enter the agency as his partner - a first for the Sherriff ’s office. Ronan stayed for a few years before a neck injury forced his early retirement. He was bred with a female Malinois named Boyca, and Kai was born amongst the litter. “Kai came into our unit at eight weeks old, and along with Kai we took two other puppies from the breeding, and they went into a new program I started at the office basically as a working dog development program, as opposed to the traditional method of buying a dog and trying to bond with it and dealing with training issues developed by somebody else.” The dogs were raised inhouse so that McMahon and the other K-9 handlers knew all the way up to certification exactly what was done with the dogs, what they had been exposed to, and increased the bond between they and their handlers.

“It really strengthens the relationship and changes the dynamic, which in law enforcement is unique because law enforcement agencies don’t raise puppies; they just buy an older dog that’s pre-trained, or they may go through a 4 to 6 month academy class as they’re training.”

Kai went through about two years of training prior to his active duty out on the road, so he was well schooled. McMahon is quick to mention the importance of bonding and socialization with people and different environments during the period, when he and Kai were side-by-side during many ventures from home or office. “By the time they’re two years old, we want them to be a more confident working dog.”

“I took that approach with Kai, and we experienced a lot together.” In fact, McMahon spends more time with Kai than he does with his own family in most cases. The team is on the job 40 hours per week, go out together on almost every canine call, but when they both head home at the end of the day, Kai is part of the McMahon family. “When I punch out of work, he punches out of work,” says the Officer.

McMahon takes a humble stance when discussing the “America’s Top Dog” victory, preferring to laud the Sherriff ’s office canines. “On a personal level,” he says, “it really didn’t change much for me – other than the fact that it brought positive light to law enforcement canines. I think it brought positive light to law enforcement communities as a whole, but then it also showcased the abilities that these dogs have, and how much they can contribute not just to law enforcement communities, but to the civilians that we’re serving.” He cites this as an asset as far as providing services and protecting the public – whether it’s for narcotics or explosives detection or just basic patrol work.

“They’re an excellent tool for us.” McMahon then speaks to the handlers and the canine unit itself. “For the Sherriff ’s office, I’d say we’re prouder not for myself but to provide a spotlight for our canine unit. I think we’re one of the premiere units in the country. I think we have an awesome training program and a very dedicated group of guys that go above and beyond the call of duty, especially as to what the canines requires. They’re constantly out working, putting in training on their own time, spending money out of their own pockets to provide for their dogs, getting education and everything else. Because, as a unit, we’re very passionate about what we do.”

McMahon is also extremely cognizant and grateful for all the support received as he and Kai faced stiff competition. “I’d like to thank my wife and family for all of their love and support; Sheriff (James) Gannon, Undersheriff (Mark) Spitzer, Chief (Kelley) Zienowicz, Chief (Richard) Rose, and all of the members of the Morris County Sheriff ’s Office for all of their support and for allowing Kai and I to partake in this endeavor; the members of the Morris County Sheriff ’s Office K-9 Section, and all of the canine handlers that have assisted Kai and I on our journey from puppy to becoming America’s Top Dog.” “I’m just happy to showcase what Kai and I are capable of, and obviously happy with the end result.”

Sheriff Gannon said he was pleased with the team’s win and was proud of how they represented the department, as well as exhibiting on television what the county has come to expect from the Sheriff ’s office.

“I’m so proud of Detective Corporal McMahon and K-9 Kai for being designated America’s Top Dog and Handler,” Gannon said.

“This is the level of service expected and delivered on a daily basis to the people of Morris County.”

McMahon hopes that he and Kai will remain partners until the latter is retired, which would be when the dog is about 10 years old. “God willing, he is able to keep doing it, and the two of us will be there together.”

Eggs as a Nutrient-Rich ‘First Food’

ggs are for everyone, including babies and toddlers, according to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee that released its Scientific Report outlining nutritional recommendations for Americans. For the first time, this committee, comprised of leading doctors and nutrition scientists, included nutritional guidance for younger children.

The committee recommends eggs as a first food for babies and toddlers since they provide eight essential nutrients that can help build a healthy foundation for life at a time when every bite counts.

Eggs provide nutrition for children and moms-to-be, as well. However, the report found most pregnant women and kids need more choline – an essential nutrient critical for brain health – in their diets.

According to research published in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition,” 92% of pregnant women don’t get enough choline in their diets. Choosing foods high in choline, like eggs, can help pregnant women consume enough of this essential nutrient, helping a baby’s brain

and spinal cord develop properly. Just two eggs provide more than half of the recommended daily amount of choline.

At only 70 calories, one egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all nine essential amino acids. Add onions and cook 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Add broccoli and bell pepper. Mix with onions and add salt and pepper, to taste. Cook 1-2 minutes then cover with lid to steam another 2-3 minutes until broccoli is bright green. Remove veggies from stovetop.

In large mixing bowl, beat eggs. Add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, baking powder and flour. Add veggies and salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer to prepared pan and bake 40 minutes.

Spiced Pumpkin Carrot Cheesecake Cupcakes Serves: 12 1 box (14 ounces) pumpkin quick bread, divided 1 cup carrots, shredded 3 eggs, divided 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup golden raisins 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 cup pecans, chopped 3 tablespoons butter, softened Heat oven to 350 F. Line muffin tin with cupcake liners.

In large bowl, stir 1/2 pumpkin quick bread package, carrots, 1 egg, milk, raisins and oil until blended. Fill each cupcake liner 3/4 full.

In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, remaining eggs, sugar and lemon juice until smooth. Spoon cream cheese mixture over cupcake batter.

In medium bowl, use fork to combine remaining bread package mix, pecans and butter until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over cream cheese in each cup.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1 package (5 ounces) semisoft cheese with garlic and fine herbs 1 1/2 cups fat-free milk 1 tablespoon flour 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups fresh baby spinach 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain.

Heat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, chicken and onion.

Cook 6-8 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink.

Reduce heat to medium. Stir in semisoft cheese. Gradually add milk and flour.

Continue stirring and cooking until mixture is thickened and bubbly.

Reduce heat to low. Add hot sauce, cheddar cheese and cooked macaroni.

Cook and stir 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted. Stir in spinach.

William Paterson Music Grad and Farmer Fondly Recalls His Years on the Mountain

H

By Steve Sears unziker Hall,” 74-year-old John Samaha says proudly. “Have you touched the rock? The rock outside the Student Center?”

It was time to fondly reminisce about his four years at William Paterson College (now William Paterson University). Samaha started at WPC in 1963 after saving up money to attend classes there by running his own farm stand, Samaha’s Farm, in Aberdeen, New Jersey.

“How is the Marion E. Shea Auditorium?” he asks, referring to the college’s performing arts center built in 1965. When told that it still is a hub of activity when open, he states, “The acoustics were great there, and that organ – it had 16-pedal tones. Very unusual. That thing would go so low, and the whole building would rattle.”

“He brought us up there a very long time ago,” says Samaha’s daughter, Nora Pettyjohn, who now runs her dad’s farm with her husband, Marcus Pettyjohn, Jr. She thinks back while smiling about the jaunt to Passaic County. “I was just a kid. We walked around and things like that.”

Samaha attended WPC from 1963 to 1967 to get a music education. “I started in ‘63, and in ’65 you had to wear a tie and jacket,” he recalls. “And you had to maintain a 3.0 (GPA) or you were out. I enjoyed my stay at William Paterson.” Samaha was in Wayne from mid-September to the end of May for classes and ran his farm from the last week

of June until it closed on Labor Day. There was never an overlap. As far as Samaha can remember, William Paterson offered nothing agriculture-wise for study back then but did have a greenhouse. He stayed at a spot across the road called The Windmill during the school year.

I always wanted to be a professional musician; I played the tuba, and I took lessons with William Bell at Julliard (School of Music) in Manhattan.” Samaha even eventually turned down a job offer with Piedmont Airlines to be a pilot because his life, in his words, was “really getting complicated.” He got married to his wife, Yvonne, in 1976, started having children (the couple raised three daughters who he says are great, but “I have seven grandchildren that are even greater”), and didn’t want to be away from home four nights a week.

Teaching and farming, two professions he loved, were it. Samaha taught music in the Hazlet, New Jersey school system for 37 years before retiring in 2005, and he and his wife continued to work the farm until passing it on to their daughter and son-inlaw in 2012. When asked how proud he is

of them both, he says, “I have no words to describe that.”

Samaha, who also recalls “The Strip,” the lengthy, somewhat thin parking lot where students back then and still do today park their cars, hasn’t been up to the William Paterson area in about five years.

“But I always want to. I have deep roots up there,” he says happily. Samaha even started a fraternity. “I don’t know if it’s still in existence, but I think it is because we had a reunion that I wasn’t able to attend two years ago.”

When asked to place his favorite composer and Samaha’s Farm produce side-byside, he without hesitation says, “Mozart and sweet corn.”

John Samaha played and taught music, and also grew vegetables from the soil. His life has been a rewarding one. “You’re never wrong,” he says, “to do the right thing.”

Humor Columnist Laverne Bardy Releases New Collection

Millburn Resident Selflessly Spearheads Town-wide Initiative to Make Masks

By Jillian Risberg hen COVID-19 hit, Carisa Reilly knew she didn’t want to sit idly doing nothing. So the real estate broker and mom of three transformed into the powerhouse ‘Mask Lady.’

It all started with an email chat on Millburn/Short Hills WorkMom group, where several healthcare professionals mentioned they were desperate for masks. “And somebody said, ‘Can’t we just make these’ and Reilly said, ‘Oh my Gosh, yes.’”

So they started researching CDC-approved patterns and materials.

“There was a suggestion to put an extra filter in the mask,” says the real estate broker. “Like when you make the mask for nurses and hospital staff it needs to be more than just fabric and they really like to use those Swiffer (dry dust cloths) ‘cause they are electrostatic, so that’s what we did.”

“I literally bought the town out of Swiffer,” she says. “People donated hundreds of Swiffers, fabric and elastic and I found nose guards that I could put in.”

David Merdinger, who owns a wholesale fabric supply (NJ Textiles) generously supplied them with hundreds of yards of fabric and elastic for masks and scrub caps, according to Reilly.

“We could not have done this without him,” she says. “He truly made all the difference.”

It was Merdinger’s wife who forwarded him Carisa’s email detailing what she was doing and he jumped right in.

“I saw it as an opportunity to help her, our community and our local hospitals,” he says. “I’m glad I was able to do my share. We have to thank Carisa for coordinating all the facets of this remarkable project.”

Several people in town had sewing machines but didn’t know how to use them.

“So we tried to organize, if you don’t know how to sew — donate fabric, cut fabric and elastic, assemble the pieces,” Reilly says. “It became very quickly a cottage industry, it was like managing a small factory remotely.”

That meant the real estate broker constructed the masks anywhere she could — in her basement, garage, bedroom, living room.

And she had help from her twin daughters, Madeline and Abigail and many devoted volunteers. The group collectively called themselves The Mask Makers for NJ Workers, continued on page 25

“Because at that point really what we were focused on was protecting our essential workers and our vulnerable people and our social services,” says The Mask Lady. “And we made hundreds for our civil servants in town and Department of Public Works and all of our municipal workers.”

“There were maybe 10 of us sewing these at home and we were being told publicly it’s actually probably a really good idea (to wear a mask),” she says. “So I was an early adopter of wearing a mask.”

She says she doesn’t really feel safe.

“It’s still kind of dangerous to go out and stuff,” the 16-year-old says, with The Mask Lady adding that they’ve tried to be pretty careful.

“It’s been hard for everybody but especially for kids it’s really changed their lives,” Reilly says.

By the end of March, early April she realized they’ve got to employ seamstresses because trying to produce 50/masks a day on their own wasn’t going to cut it and there were healthcare workers who urgently needed them.

She reached out to Millburn Mayor Jackie Lieberberg, who offered her invaluable support. Next step was to raise $2,400.

“I put in $600 of my own money,” the real estate broker says. “In a week we had about $5000 or $6,000. That enabled us to crank them out. The goal was 1,200 (masks) in seven days. We did 1,200 in like 14 days and just had to keep doing them.”

According to Lieberberg, at the very beginning of the pandemic she had the opportunity to highlight folks who were doing exceptional work in town. That included Reilly, whose community-wide effort to make

masks spanned the healthcare workers, first responders and those exposed through their dedicated work with the public.

“It took a village but Carisa hired the sewers, sourced the material, employed people,” the mayor says. “I mean it was incredible what she did — really singlehandedly, running around delivering fabric, people donating fabric, and she perfected her craft. With each batch it got better and better. They’re (the masks) unique; I give her a tremendous amount of credit and she has another day job.”

And it wasn’t just Millburn, says Lieberberg. The real estate broker’s face coverings also went to an underserved population that otherwise wouldn’t have had access to face masks.

“It’s very gratifying that her generosity had no boundaries,” the mayor says.

By Executive Order towards the end of April all essential workers and frontline workers had to wear masks and if you were in a store you were required to wear a mask.

“Now we have a whole new group of people who need masks and it was still really hard to find them,” Reilly says. “So we had to develop a different kind of mask because what we were doing for healthcare workers was very protective but also quite hot to

have three full layers on your face.”

She and the Mask Makers felt they needed to regroup.

“So we came up with a completely different design that was two layers of fabric, lightweight, much easier to make,” says The Mask Lady. “And it was really important to me and still is to source as much as we could locally.”

They have produced more than 3,000 masks and scrub caps thus far. And she is involved in a Millburn/Short Hills volunteer

gardening project, one more way The Mask Lady is giving back and making a difference.

Looking ahead, the real estate broker is also planning to take part in an initiative on Alignable.com called #mymoneystayslocal, which involves being a leader in the community to encourage people to support local businesses and services whenever possible.

I Remember Dad:

T

By Richard Mabey Jr. here are moments in our lives where a single, solitary, seemingly mundane event, transpires to become a most monumental and sacred accomplishment in time. Such was the evening, back in the Summer of 1943, when my dad wrote a letter to his grandmother, Dora Dolson Mabey.

Dad wrote his letter to his grandmother from his bed inside the barracks at Hickam Air Field during World War II. Back then, the men of the United States Army Air Corps wrote letters on very, very thin paper to save on the cost of mailing.

I was only six years old when my great grandmother went Home to be with the Lord. But I still remember her talking about the letters that Dad wrote to her, when Dad was serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II. And one letter in particular had a profound effect upon my great grandmother.

I guess I was about four or five years old, when we used to visit Great Grandma Mabey at the old Mabey Homestead, in her stately living room. We lived in Clifton at the time. And, as a young child, I found the Mabey Homestead to be a most fascinating

Dad’s Letters to His Grandmother and enchanting place to visit. I had no idea, no clue, no indication that at the age of six, a most incredible and sacred turn of events would lead to the Mabey Homestead becoming my home for a long, long time.

Great Grandma Mabey had a rocking chair in her living room. She became a widow in 1936, at the age of 65, when my great grandfather, William Mabey, suffered a stroke and went Home to be with the Lord.

There was a loneliness that loomed deep in the eyes of Great Grandma Mabey.

In Dad’s legendary letter, that he wrote to his grandmother from Hickam Air Field, he shared with his grandmother, his heartfelt memories of his grandfather. Specifically, picking strawberries from Earl’s Meadow with his Grandpa. Of Dad walking down to the old Morris Canal with his grandfather.

And, very specifically, the time that Great Grandpa Mabey, Grandpa Mabey and Dad built the shed along Mabey Lane on Earl’s Meadow. It was a letter that my great grandmother dearly cherished.

I remember when I was seven years old and we were now living in the old Mabey Homestead. Dad let me climb the ladder to go into the attic with him. It was quite a big

deal for a kid to climb up the attic ladder with his dad. I remember Dad asked me to help him look for the letters that he had written to his grandmother, while he was in the Army Air Corps. Sadly, we never did find the letters.

What became of Dad’s letters to his grandmother is a great mystery, that at

times still haunts me. My great grandmother was a very organized person. She had a very sensitive and caring heart. It’s just odd that the letters were lost.

There was a part of my father that was a rugged, tough as nails, strong man. Dad was the long-distance truck driver, the continued on page 28

I Remember Dad... gotten lost. I would have loved to have read my father’s recollections of his childhood, written when he was a young man at Hickam Air Field.

Life isn’t always fair. I cherish my early childhood memories of Great Grandma Mabey sitting in her rocking chair, talking about Dad’s letters. It had a great affect upon me. I think it was a factor in my decision to become a writer. I remember how Dad’s letters had so deeply touched his grandmother. I realized then, at a very, very age, the uplifting power of words.

In dreams, I often go back to the memory of visiting Great Grandma Mabey. Of her talking about the letters that Dad had written her. And, specifically one very special letter where Dad shared with his grandmother, the fond memories that he held in his heart for his grandfather. O’ to turn back the pages of the calendar, for even just a few hours.

Items to Include in College Students’ Quarantine Bags

M

illions of parents dropped their children off on college campuses for the start of a new school year in August. While that might not stand out in a normal year, 2020 has proven to be anything but normal.

Many colleges and universities grappled with how to approach the 2020-21 academic year as the world continued to battle the COVID-19 outbreak. Some schools chose to offer only remote learning and keep kids off campus entirely, while others offered in person classes and welcomed students back to campus. Still others created hybrid learning plans that combined remote learning with in person sessions.

Regardless of which option schools ultimately chose, it’s fair to say that many recognized the potential that the pandemic could once again upset the academic apple cart after the semester began, forcing students and educators to adjust to fully remote learning in much the same way they did back in March. In addition to that potential outcome, students who returned to campus must be prepared to enter quarantine if they or a friend, classmate or roommate tests positive for COVID-19. In anticipation of that, it pays for students to prepare quarantine bags in case they need to isolate themselves at any point during the semester.

Few college students have exclusive access to washers and dryers in their dorm rooms or apartments. Shared laundry rooms will likely be off limits while students are under quarantine, so make sure to pack enough clothing to get through two weeks of isolation. Take inventory of your supply of pajamas, underwear and socks and purchase more if necessary.

Food and cooking supplies College students accustomed to eating their meals at the dining hall food may need to prepare their own meals while in quarantine. Stock up on nonperishable items, such as pasta, soup, rice, and cereal, that can be stored in your room for long periods of time without expiring. Bottled water can help you stay hydrated should you feel ill, while decaffeinated tea can help you stay warm should you feel chills. Bring along a mini refrigerator, a toaster or toaster oven, a tea kettle, some pots and pans, bowls and plates, and utensils as well.

Medical supplies Extra masks are a must-have when returning to campus, and they can help students make it through quarantine as well.

Masks can be worn when using restrooms or showers, even if students are attending schools that plan to isolate people who test positive in buildings that cannot be accessed by non-infected community members.

In addition to extra masks, make sure you have enough daily medical supplies, such as toothpaste, shampoo, body lotion or soap, deodorant, tissues, and disinfectant, to last through quarantine, which is typically no less than two weeks.

Technology While in quarantine, students will want to stay connected to the outside world and parents will no doubt want to check in as often as possible to see how their children are
