West Orange 10 Year Old Calls TV Station Seeking Kidney For Parent

I

By Dawn M. Chiossi n general, kids make requests all the time: for money, for favors, for the latest and greatest this or that, but almost never for a parent. But a recent news story featured on News 12 New Jersey shattered those generalizations of kids, and showed just how unselfish they can be. In an incredible show of caring and maturity way beyond his years, 10 year old West Orange resident Nick Recchia became a hero to his dad when he recently contacted the news station with a jaw dropping request: he stated that his dad needed a new kidney and asked to help spread the word on the importance of organ donation. Organ donation, specifically kidney donation, is an issue that hits close to home in the Recchia family. Recchia’s father, Peter, is struggling with end stage renal disease. He was born with only one kidney, and unfortunately that one is now failing. He has been on the transplant list for twoand-a half years. Since that time, Peter Recchia has been going to dialysis in Livingston, spending three days a week, four hours a day, enduring the procedure that is keeping him alive, and searching for a match- someone with A positive blood type. As expected, Peter Recchia has his good days and bad days, and battles with fatigue and morale. “It’s been a long, rough twoand-a-half years,” he asserts. And yet, he’s a devoted family man underneath it all. “I like to have the first appointment for dialysis in the morning, because then I can have more energy in the afternoon to spend time with my kids,” he shares. Because illness affects everyone, including the families of those who are struggling with it, Nick Recchia was deeply concerned about his father. As he wondered how to help him, what he could do, this impres-

sive 10 year old came up with a familiar answer: NJ News 12. “I needed my father to get a kidney,” he said matter-of-factly. “I figured if I talked about it on TV, then maybe somebody would help him.” He not only reached out to the news station, he did so independently, telling no one about his idea. Peter Recchia mentioned how his son just basically sprang the news on him and the rest of his family. “I had no idea; he just sat us down and told us that News 12 would be here in a half an hour,” he relates in disbelief and a touch of humor. And in the span of a few short days this family received an amazing show of support and caring from the public in response to this heartwarming story. “It was awesome,” Pete Recchia asserts. Because of a son’s request to help his father, strangers rallied around someone they didn’t even know, and wondered how they could help. They reached out to see what they could do, how they can become donors to help out Pete Recchia and others who are in the same situation. It is often said that organ donation is the gift of life. Thanks to a 10 year old’s request, along with the possibility of a new kidney, this young boy gave his father many more: The gifts of caring, family, continued on page 4
