By Dawn M. Chiossi here are many gifts that people can give a child, but the best of these is the gift of life. West Orange second grader, Veronica DePauli is in need of a bone marrow transplant and is now seeking a donor. Donation is the gift that can save others: Their futures, their lives. Everyone knows that childhood should be fun, carefree and sweet. Above all, children should be bouncing with good health, but unfortunately that is not always possible. Sometimes children have to face challenges that adults would find daunting and im-

At a time when most seven year olds are dripping with energy and well-being, DePauli is battling a rare genetic disorder called Osteopetrosis since last year, and is now seeking a bone marrow donor to save her life. Osteopetrosis is also known as marble bone disease. In that case they’d have to rely on the Be the Match Registry to find a compatible donor. Be the Match, operated by the National Donor Program, has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. So the challenge is multilayered for DePauli. Because
of her ethnicity, DePauli is Hispanic and Hispanic donors make up approximately only 10 percent of the global registry, finding a match is unfortunately, all the more difficult. According to the folks at Community Blood Services, racial and ethnicity are essential factors. Because the tissue types are inherited, patients are most likely to cont. on page 4
