West Orange Middle Schooler Performs At Don’t Tell Mama Cabaret

By Catherine Bialkowski t 13, Sebastian Chaviano is already well on his way to stardom. An eighth-grader at Roosevelt Middle School in West Orange, Chaviano recently performed a song“Waiting for the Light to Shine” from the Broadway musical “Big River”-and monologue at “Don’t Tell Mama Cabaret” in New York City. “Don’t Tell Mama”an establishment that has hosted celebrities such as Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers and Paul Newman-is wellknown for its theatre-style entertainment, and has been in business for more than 30 years. Chaviano was invited to perform at the cabaret after countless hours of practice with his vocal and acting coaches, Bob Marks and Denise Simon, respectively. His talent is what brought him to the stage. “It was very exciting, because I got to be in front of two casting directors and agencies that got to watch me do my first monologue,” he said. He hopes this performance might open the door to future opportunities. Chaviano has been interested in show business

since the age of six, when he performed in a play at his school. “I was in Catholic school, one of the Wise men in the Christmas play,” he said. That was the beginning of his love for being onstage. “It’s very exciting to be in front of all those people,” said Chaviano. “I love to show them what I can do. It’s an adrenaline rush.” “Perfect” is how he would describe his recent experience at Don’t Tell Mama. “I got to show everyone my skills.” Chaviano hopes to become a professional actor one day. For now, he has to balance his blooming career with school and homework. “Even though I’m acting, I have still have to do my work and projects,” he said. What’s next for Chaviano? He recently landed an audition for the highly-rated web television series “Mozart in the Jungle,” a comedy-drama based on the 2005 memoir of oboist Blair Tindall. He was also recently signed with Nancy Carson, a talent agent who has represented stars like Mischa Barton and Matt Damon. In short, his career has only just begun.

“For anybody who wants to do something like I’m doing, you can make it,” said Chaviano, offering some advice for aspiring performers like him. “I’m only thirteen, and I have come this far.” Chaviano’s future is certainly looking bright. With an impressive resume

filled with appearances in school productions and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, as well as an impressive training background in acting, singing, and dance, he undoubtedly has an illustrious career in store. For more information, visit his website, sebastianchaviano.com.
