Wayne Police “Stuff the Truck” With Toys For Children In Need

B

By Anya Bochman raving the dipping temperatures and the steady fall of snowflakes, Wayne Township police officers Corey Stevens and John Culic of the Wayne Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 136 collected new, unwrapped toys for the national Toys for Tots program on Saturday, Dec. 9., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Despite the less than optimal weather conditions, a steady flow of people stopped by to hand in their donations to the union’s “Stuff the Truck” program in the parking lot of the Wayne Municipal Building. A girl of about four, named Emma, too shy to speak to the officers, brought over a plastic bag with toys, while her mother commented that toy donation is something she plans to do more often in the future.

Toys for Tots, a not-for-profit charity, is a national program operated by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which “collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes them as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” Culic and Stevens, both U.S. Marine Corps veterans, recalled doing the program while in the service, which made the collection side of it more enjoyable. “This is our first year doing [Stuff the Truck],” Stevens said. “We thought the weather might hold us back, but we’re actually doing beautifully.”

On Tuesday, the union will gather all the toys collected during the drive – including at two other locations, the Wayne Public Library and Indian Motorcycles of Wayne – and drive them over to Schuyler-Colfax Middle School, which has volunteered to have students load the toys onto delivery vehicles. After the donations are all sorted, the officers will take them to Picatinny Arsenal, the closest drop-off point to Wayne for Toys for Tots. The officers estimated that Picatinny Arsenal alone handles something like 300,000 donations, sorting them according to age and gender. At Christmas, coorcontinued on page 2
