Wayne Mission Seeks Personal Care Donations For Needy

H

eart ‘n Hands Mission of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, a mobile outreach ministry which provides good quality donated clothing and personal care items to the homeless and working poor at food pantries and soup kitchens in Paterson, Passaic and Hoboken, is conducting its fifth annual Blessing Bag Project and is seeking donations.

The mission also provides business clothing for veterans and their families in Paterson, Kearny, Franklin and Hackensack who are seeking employment. Heart ‘n Hands Mission is now supporting 2,000 individuals with its monthly distributions. It also supports the Wayne Interfaith Network and members of the Wayne community. Heart ‘n Hands Mission is 100 percent volunteer and 100 percent of all monetary donations go directly to meet the needs of the homeless and working poor.

Sept. 3 marked the beginning the project, which will continue until Oct. 1. A Blessing Bag is a gallon food storage bag containing 22 travel size personal care

The Blessing Bag Program is a perfect opportunity for school groups, congregations, businesses and clubs to help those less fortunate during the holidays. The mission is looking for donations of these specific new travel size items: toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, shave gel, deodorant, Gold Bond Medicated Powder, hand sanitizer and body wash.

They also encourage donors to write notes of cheer or encouragement. Children’s drawings are a welcome addition to this holiday gift, which will be distributed to seven different sites in December.

he Wayne Rotary and the 200 Club of Passaic County recently helped finance a pricey custom-fitted protective vest for Service Dog “Gino” of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office.

Service dogs undergo extensive training to protect the public, by sniffing out explosives and narcotics, and locating escaped criminals, important evidence, weapons and missing persons.

It is important that these bullet-proof vests are custom fitted for service dogs, to allow them to run at top speed, enter close spaces, and have the agility to

perform all the athletic activities required to best protect the public.

The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office has several dogs in its K-9 Unit, and there is always at least one in a patrol car at any time, ready to go.

The dogs are fully trained and certified, before they can serve in the field. Typically, the dogs serve from age 2 ½ until age 10, after which they are retired, and usually then become the home pet of his K-9 Unit trainer, who has formed a bond with the animal over the years.

Wayne Couple Combines Talents Of Art And Writing To Create Children’s Book

By Jason Cohen hat began as sketches and humorous writing nearly a decade ago, turned into a book for a husband and wife in Wayne.

In June, Eric Salvesen, 32, and his wife, Laura Sullivan, 30, wrote and published their first book, “A Bridge Troll’s Tale.”

“We really made it our goal for this year,” Salvesen said.

“That kind of struck that I’m officially a published writer.”

The children’s book follows a troll on his adventure from underneath his bridge, across a farm, encountering several interesting

animals on his journey to find out who he is. The book has a silly ending and a message about kindness for children of all ages.

Salvesen works as a machine operator, but has always loved writing and Sullivan is graphic designer.

The two of them explained this book was a long journey that they were glad finally came to fruition.

In 2009, Salvesen visited his then girlfriend Sullivan at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. He sat in on one of her classes and began to write several short stories on receipts and cardboard. One if those was “A Bridge

Troll’s Tale,” which he completed in just a half hour.

Inspired by the writing, Sullivan would work on the art in her free time.

But, they both described the writing process as “casual.”

They explained that because it was a children’s book, the writing was the easy part. The challenge was having her images reflect his writing. Therefore, there were often discussions about how to draw the various body parts of the characters.

The husband and wife recalled how they didn’t work on the book for a while, but it was their family that really gave

Ten years ago, the Passaic County CASA was a one-person operation based in a single cubicle on Spruce Street in Paterson.

It has since grown into a team of eight staff members and 162 trained volunteers who work out of a 2,500-square foot office space in Wayne.

ed staff and team of volunteers speak up for children who have been removed from home due to abuse or neglect.

They work one-onone with the child or children, advocating for his or her best interests and working towards achieving permanency in a safe, nurturing home as soon as possible. During this past year alone, 92 Passaic County CASA volunteers advocated on behalf of 215 youth in foster care.

Eventually, after holding a Gofundme campaign last year to help self-publish the book, they were finally able to accomplish their goal this summer. So far, they have sold 70 copies and have had a positive reaction within the community.

Salvesen has written several other children’s stories and they plan to publish them in the future.

Salvesen has always had a passion for quirky writing.

He stressed that

Non-Profit To Hold Annual Food Drive For Thanksgiving

By Jason Cohen non-profit organization in Wayne is holding its 15th annual Thanks “4” Giving food drive and fundraiser in November.

The Pines Lake Woman’s Club will host the food drive Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Wayne Municipal Complex parking lot at 475 Valley Road. All of the food and money will be donated to the Community Foodbank of New Jersey in Hillside, the largest food bank in the state.

The club is a member of New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, the largest volunteer women’s service organization in New Jersey and is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. In the past, the organization has collected used books, glasses and cell phones for kids, made hats for premature babies, helped battered women’s shelters and made care packages for emergency responders.

There are approximately 8,000 members in 200 clubs located throughout New Jersey. They

provide opportunities for women with education, leadership training, and community service through participation in local clubs.

Marge Caffery, who has cochaired the event for the past seven years, said the organization holds different fundraisers throughout the year, but this is its biggest one. It takes place the Saturday before Thanksgiving and people donate turkeys and all of the other non-perishable items eaten on the holiday.

Caffery explained that this isn’t a highly publicized event, but with the help of the media and some corporations, enough food will be donated that hundreds of families will have food on Thanksgiving. A kid even dresses up in a turkey costume on the day of the drive.

“We never know what we’re going to get,” she said. “Each year we get more.”

Caffery, whose mother Dot Wollerman was president of the club several years ago, understands how important hunger is

Wayne School District Registers For No Place For Hate With ADL

By Jason Cohen he Wayne School District is implementing a new program this year that promotes unity and respect and empowers schools to reduce bullying, name-calling and bias activity.

On Sept. 7, the district sent an email to parents announcing it is participating in the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate initiative, which was established to create inclusivity in schools.

The program will connect the schools to more than 200 other institutions in the region and 1,500 schools across the country.

A Parent Teacher Organization meeting was held Sept.

14, where the administration discussed the program with the parents.

According to national statistics for the ADL, 22 percent of students ages 12 to 8 reported being bullied at school, 13.6 percent were insulted, 13.2 percent were the subject of rumors, 6

percent were pushed, 4.5 percent were excluded on purpose and 3.9 percent were threatened with harm. Also, 28 percent of students ages 10 to 18 were victims of cyberbullying.

Wayne School Superintendent Mark Toback explained that this program has been in the works since last year and the district has been collecting data about bullying and incidents. He said there will be a few programs each year addressing bulling and other topics that fall under the initiative.

Toback stressed that the district did not implement No Place for Hate because of an incident or problem, but rather to make the schools safer. Toback noted that kids are often exposed to things on TV, the internet or the media, many of which they don’t understand or realize can be offensive to other people.

“I think this is one way that we can improve the school climate,” he said.

In today’s technologically driven society, Toback said social media is a big part of bullying.

Whether it is Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, email or simply texting, bullying often takes place outside of the classroom.

Wayne Valley Principal Kenneth Palczewski told the “Hometown News” he is looking forward to implementing the initiative.

Lead School Counselor Felicia Miller and Assistant Principal Scott Wisniewski, who oversees the counseling department, will spearhead the program in the school.

The school has several activities planned throughout the school year that fall under the initiative, including students

signing a Resolution of Respect, a student planned and run program for the Week of Respect and a Week of Kindness, which will include a Wellness Fair for both students and staff.

“No Place for Hate fits perfectly with our “Valley Pride” core values and we are working collaboratively with our student groups such as the; Peer Leaders, Student Council, and National Honor Society to promote these values along with the No Place for Hate initiative,” Palczewski said. “These activities, among several others which will be run throughout the school year, will reinforce this great initiative and our core values here at Wayne Valley High School.”

ats are widely considered low maintenance pets, but even the most independent feline can use a helping hand from his owner every now and again. That helping hand is perhaps most necessary when cats find themselves facing a health issue they can’t overcome. The following are a handful of common cat ailments and what cat owners can do to help their furry friends go back to living life to the fullest.

Feline lower urinary tract diseases Many things can cause a cat to get a feline lower urinary tract disease, or FLUTD. A collection of clinical symptoms that can be caused by a host of factors, FLUTD can prevent a cat from fully emptying its bladder and may even lead to a fatal block of the urethra, which is the tube connecting the bladder to the outside of the body. Cats that are

overweight or obese might be susceptible to urinary tract problems, and those suffering from FLUTD may experience frequent or painful urination, bloody urine, and frequent licking of the urinary opening. Other indicators of urinary tract problems in cats include a hard distended abdomen, prolonged squatting in the litter box, and possibly fear or avoidance of the litter box that leads to soiling in inappropriate places.

Cat owners who suspect their cats are suffering from FLUTD should bring their cats to the veterinarian immediately. The veterinarian will conduct a complete physical exam and order a urinalysis, and the results of these tests will determine treatment, which varies depending on the cause of the problem and the doctor’s prognosis.

Fleas Fleas may be most associated

with dogs, but cats commonly get fleas as well. Cats with fleas may be constantly scratching at their skin, which may be covered with tiny black dots. Such dots are flea dirt. In addition, cats with fleas may suffer hair loss and their skin may be noticeably red or irritated.

Fleas pose a serious threat to cats, as they can live on them for more than a year and increase their risk of anemia, a condition in which cats have less of the red blood cells they need to car-

ry oxygen to the tissues in their bodies. A veterinarian can design a course of treatment for cats suffering from fleas, and that treatment plan may include medication (oral or topical), powders and foams.

Tapeworms The most common internal parasite found in cats, tapeworms can live inside a cat’s small intestine, and cat owners may be shocked to learn that these parasites can grow as long as two feet. Cats fighting a tapeworm infection may vomit or lose a noticeable amount of weight. But it’s important that cat owners recognize vomiting is very common in cats, and not necessarily indicative of tapeworms. Barbership Quartet To Kick Off St. Timothy’s Concert Series

he “Musicales at Noon” concert series at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Wayne opens Wednesday, Oct. 11, with the award-winning barbershop quartet, Quatrain. These four performers have been singing together for more than 40 years.

Their traditional barbershop program includes old favorites like, “I Believe” and “Just Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella,” plus costumes and a splash of humor.

Featured on Oct. 18 will be “Small Gems for Cello and Piano,” with cellist Emma Schmiedecke and pianist Linda Sweetman-Waters. “The Swan,” by Camille

Saint-Saens, and “Sicilienne,” by Gabriel Fauré, are sure to be among the gems.

he New Jersey Highlands Coalition is sponsoring the 5th Annual Juried Highlands Art and Photography Exhibit at the Morris Museum.

The three top prize winners also will be shown at Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery in Bernardsville throughout the month of March.

All 2D work, including paintings, drawings, pastels, watercolors, photography, etc., will be considered as long as it features the landscapes, flora, fauna, natural, cultural and/or historic resources of the Highlands of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Depictions of flora and fauna outside of the Highlands region will be accepted if those species are typically found in the Highlands. Some three-dimensional work will also be considered.

Preparing Your Fireplace Or Stove For The Season

ireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources.

Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months.

Open-flame heating sources carry with them certain risks. The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 20092013, American fire departments responded to 56,000 home structure fires that involved heating equipment. The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire.

• Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected.

Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals

may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents.

• Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years.

• Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires.

If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering.

• Inspect the damper. A damper is a valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly.

efore saying “so long” to yard work at the end of autumn, homeowners should remove thatch from their lawns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellowish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the lawn over the winter, can block air and moisture from making its way into the soil. That can make it difficult for a lawn to recover come the spring and may even cost homeowners a substantial amount of money to address when winter finally skips town.

When removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake with lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the lawn. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes with the rake, as this will collect the thatch without damaging the lawn. Many people rent a dethatcher from a nearby lawn and garden supply store, and such a device can make the process of removing thatch much easier. However, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your lawn, as there is no way of telling what condition the previous renter’s lawn was in when he or she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s lawn onto your own, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring when your lawn is looking to rebound. If seeding the lawn in early fall, which can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying down any new seed.

If you wait to remove thatch until after you have laid down new seed, then the lawn likely won’t benefit from the seed and you will likely just rake the new seed away when it comes time to remove thatch.
