Pequannock Boys’ Soccer Captains Lead By Example
T
By Josh Lashley here are so many tough decisions, decisions unique to their team that the head coach of a sports program must make on a regular basis. One decision that wasn’t at all difficult for Pequannock head boys’ soccer coach Michael Zummo to make this year was naming Xavier Ramirez and Dan Apryasz as the captains. Not only are both seniors very capable soccer players, but they happened to be captains for the Golden Panthers last season. Coach Zummo notes just why Ramirez and Apryasz are leaders for Pequannock. It’s winning formula that the captains employ on the pitch. “Hard work, hard work, hard work,’’ Zummo said. “They play hurt, play year round, love the game, want to win, do whatever is best for the team, lead by example and both plan to play in college. Both are primarily central defensive players and can play anywhere on field.’’ Both student-athletes have made steady improvements throughout their high school careers which have benefitted the program in general. “Xavier is a four-year varsity player,’’ Zummo said. “He was a very talented player always, but his knowledge of the game has increased tremendously. Dan is a three-year varsity player and is an absolute physical specimen. He has worked so hard to put a ton of muscle on, it shows in his goal kicks where they can range from 65 to 80-plus yards.’’ Ramirez and Apryasz take the great sport of soccer very seriously. But they fully understand what’s more important-and that’s their school work. “Xavier is President of Spanish Honor Society and an Honor Roll student,’’ Zummo said. “He’s also a member of the STEM Academy, Senior Ambassador, SEAL
of Biliteracy recipient, Math Club and Operation Smile. Dan is an Honor Roll student and member of Habitat for Humanity.’’ It is also very important to note that both captains consistently strive to help their teammates become more wellrounded soccer players. “Both drive the team to compete at top effort, they set up times to lift, play or train,’’ Zummo said. “Both help others make recruiting tapes and highlight pictures and film on social media.’’ The Golden Panthers have been quite competitive well into the month of October and several players on the roster have contributed to the success. “I would have to mention my whole team,’’ Zummo said. “The whole point of this year is that is has been a family mentality. They all contribute and we are so deep that anyone can step up and make continued on page 4
