By Anya Bochman equannock Township High School business education teacher Elliott Honig knows the hard work that the student members put in to keep the organization functional and serving its intended purpose. “We do community service in and outside of the school,” says Honig, who is also the faculty advisor for the school’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter. “We’ve been kinda working our tails off, to put it nicely – to travel, to network for materials that aren’t necessarily available to all kids.” In addition to community service, Honig cited the organization of a recent volleyball tournament, participation in March of Dimes and teaming up with another foundation to raise funds in order to provide teenagers with cancer with gift baskets. The path to recognition for such efforts involves levels of representation for the school’s chapter; advisors like Honig submit reports and statistics about Pequannock FBLA’s activities and charitable endeavors to the national organization. sixth year competing at the national level, as well as reeling in a slew of awards – including National Outstanding Chapter, Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit, Chapter Challenge Award and Diamond Chapter Award. Individual event winners at this year’s competition were Kamila Magiera, America Award and second place in FBLA Principles and Procedures; Michael Stringer, second place in Help Desk; Emma Ference, tenth place in Help Desk; and Matt Apryasz, Sarah Acquaviva, Juliet O’Hare and Alyssa Kajian, eighth place in Parliamentary Procedures. Juliet O’Hare, one of the members to snag an award
at the national competition, is also FBLA President this year – a role she is excited about. “It’s a student-run organization,” O’Hare says. “If you want to get more involved, you can compete.” Honig seconds the sentiment of student involvement, citing it as the primary vehicle behind FBLA. “The kids do it all,” he says. “I just support them.” As stated on the website, the mission statement of the FBLA is “to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.” This goal consists of developing leadership skills, competing academically,
having members create career portfolios, participation in community service and creating a portfolio of accomplishments through various award programs. Pequannock Township High School students got a chance at the latter this year at the FBLA National Conference on June 24 – 27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Twenty-seven students from the school took the trip to compete in a range of events, as well as socialize with students across the country and Puerto Rico and China.
