He was born in San Francisco in 1883 – and graduated from University of California, Berkeley, Calif., with a degree in engineering.

His first job at the San Francisco Chronicle led to early success, but it wasn’t until he moved to New York City and began working for Hearst publications that he became a household name. Goldberg is the only person ever to be listed in the Merriam Webster Dictionary as an adjective. For 55 years the award-winning engineer turned cartoonist, drew machines and contraptions that satirized the new machines and gadgets being built. It’s estimated that he drew a staggering 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime. His drawings, using simple gadgets and household items already in use, were incredibly complex and wacky, but many had an ingenious, logical progression to them. In 1988 the first National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest was launched. “We hosted the event for the first time on Friday, March 16,” said Matthew Hales, an educator at the Lakeside Middle School,
in Pompton Lakes. “This is actually the first time we participated along with two other schools, who brought three teams together,” he said. “The schools were from West Orange (bringing two teams) and Kendall Park. This year’s contest was pouring a bowl of cereal in 10 steps or more. “At 9 a.m., the schools started to arrive, and along with our two teams, started to set up the machines,” he described. “Three referees and three judges from our town participated, along with others from West Orange.” Paul Amoroso, Pompton Lakes superintendent; Michael Serra, Pompton Lakes mayor; and Michelle Martino, Liberty Middle School’s assistant principal, were the judges.
