Cedar Crest Protestant Community Donates To Pequannock Food Pantry

O

n Feb. 5, the Cedar Crest Protestant Community held Souper Bowl Sunday, piggybacking on the popular Super Bowl football championship. The congregation collected $385 and about 40 bags of groceries for delivery to the Pequannock Food Pantry on Monday.

Protestant Council President Elaine Thomas commented, “This was our first effort with this kind of program. We give cash donations monthly to a variety of local, national and international charities and donate regularly to the CUMAC clothing drive. We are very pleased with the response of the congre-

gation to a local group providing a needed service.” The Protestant Community of Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains is led by Reverend Dennis Rockett. Services are open to residents and the public and are held Sundays at 10 a.m. in the Cedar Crest Interfaith Chapel. Special services are also held throughout the year. Run To Register For Kinnelon 5K To Support Scholarships

By Jane Primerano he Kinnelon Education Association announced its plans to sponsor the Pot of Gold Scholarship 5K Run on Sun., March 19, for the seventh consecutive year. The run is an annual spring fundraiser presented by the faculty to raise money for scholarships for graduating Kinnelon High School seniors. The scholarship recipients are judged based on the criteria of grades, community service performed and also financial need, according to Heather Wolfgang, one of three teachers who serve as race directors. Community service is a particularly

important requirement, according to the race website. The other race directors are Kerry Iannuzzi and Kelly Egan. Iannuzzi and Wolfgang are math teachers and Egan is a special education teacher. Registration for the race is online at: runsignup. com/Race/NJ/KinnelonEducationAssociationPotofGold5K. Online registration closes at midnight on March 17 but in-person registration is accepted the morning of the race, Wolfgang said. The registration fee is $25 for both online and in-person. To attract more students to the race this year, race officials created a discount

for students age 18 and under, Wolfgang said. The students can register at a discounted price of $15 by using the mail-in registration form accessible on the website. She said students from Kinnelon High School and usually from several nearby high schools traditionally participate, but the number of student runners varies from year to year. The race starts at 9 a.m. and is preceded by a Fun Run starting at 8:15 a.m. The Fun Run is one mile with a $10 registration fee. There are no refunds allowed of any of the registration fees, according to the website.

Runners must check in for the 5K from 7 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The race begins at Kinnelon High School, 121 Kinnelon Road, continues through the rolling borough roads and ends back at the high school track. Anywhere between 100 and 300 runners have run in previous years, so race organizers aren’t sure how many to expect this year, Wolfgang said. The race is called Pot of Gold because of its proximity to St. Patrick’s Day and race organizers are urging both runners and spectators to wear green for the holiday and to celebrate Kincontinued on page 2
